Clinton adviser makes superdelegate pitch

Clinton's campaign says she has 'automatic delegates.'
Clinton's campaign says she has 'automatic delegates.'

(CNN) - Following a surge in the pace of superdelegate endorsements, senior Clinton adviser Harold Ickes released a memo addressed to the Democratic Party’s “automatic delegates” that points to several new polls that suggest Hillary Clinton would be tougher to beat than Barack Obama in a general election bout.

(Ickes refers to superdelegates as “automatic delegates” because he says that term better reflects their status as party leaders and elected officials who are entitled to a vote at the Democratic convention.)

At least dozen superdelegates have publicly weighed in so far this week. Of those, roughly two-thirds have supported Obama, and one-third have backed Clinton.

“A spate of new public polls out this week confirms what we have been arguing for some time: Hillary Clinton is the strongest candidate to beat John McCain in November,” writes Ickes.

He points to results in recent national and swing state surveys testing hypothetical head-to-head matchups with John McCain which show Clinton performing slightly better than Obama. He also notes the New York senator’s showing in “the all important subcategories that serve as bellwethers for a candidate’s overall strength.”

Ickes says relevant results in those categories include Obama’s rising unfavorable ratings, and Clinton’s greater strength among independent voters and seniors – and among young voters, a group that has been a vital part of Obama’s base in many of his previous primary wins.

In the latest AP-Ipsos poll pitting each Democratic candidate against presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, both candidates win a majority – but Clinton fares better, pulling in two-thirds of those voters against McCain, while Obama receives the support of 55 percent in a hypothetical matchup with the Arizona senator.

Hillary Clintons baggage has not been aired. Her Pastor has been charged with Child molestation and sentenced to 7 years in prison. What will the Republicans do with that!?!?!

Lee, you are miss informed, the paster that you refer to was a paster from a town named Clinton, NY, and has nothing to do with Sen Clinton, and i will not say you said that on purpuse just to hurt Sen. Clinton.
. CNN should correct this miss statement.

THAT IS WHY I CALL ON ALL THE SUPERDELEGATES TO MAKE A DECISION NOW, SO THAT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY WILL NOT SINK.

WE NEED TO END THIS MADNESS NOW.

HILARY HAS BEEN DIGGING A GRAVE FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND WE NEED TO PUT AN END TO THIS MADNESS.

SINCE WHEN IS HILARY THE STRONGEST CANDIDATE?
NOT AFTER THE CROSS OVER REPUBLICANS VOTED FOR HER IN PENNSYLVANIA.
OBVIOUSLY, WE ALL KNOW THAT OHIO,TEXAS AND PENNSYLVANIAN REPUBLICANS CAME IN RECORD NUMBERS TO VOTE FOR HILARY.
OPERATION CHAOS CONCUTED BY CONSERVATIVE TALK SHOW HOST LIKE RUSH LIMBURGH MADE THE CALL.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW .

DUH, it's only May folks... When Hillary's butt is kicked out all will be fine, since she won't be there to fudge up the works! When it's Obama v. McCain, Obama will most certainly top McCain and win this fall!

Wake-up Cnn and report the news. All of you are bought out n
the Obama corner. Hillary can`t get a nice word or fair reporting
without putting her down. She is the stronger of the two canidates. Let
the voters vote. If she has the most popular and him the delegate. It
    is all up for grabs...................

I agree with many of your posts. The reason why Hillary is fairing better agains McCain right now is because she's not being vetted whatsoever about anything. All of the attacks are being thrown at Obama. She has a lot of stuff in the closet that will be found out and revealed if she becomes the nominee. Her supporters, especially the young ones, will be in for a shock when they hear about all of her scandals, past and present. She truly has not been vetted because many of her supporters weren't old enough to remember all of the scandals. Her recent scandals have also not been vetted. She still has Mark Penn on her team who was lobbying for the Colombian Free Trade Agreement. She claimed that he was no longer on her team, but she lied because he's still working for her. Her own husband was lobbying as well for the trade agreement and received $800,000 in their account for it. She has to testify in November in the biggest political fraud case in history that is being brought against her for using $1.3 million dollars of illegal funding for her campaign when she ran for the Senate. That is why she's doing well in the polls, none of her gaffes or lies are being discussed in the MSM. The Republicans have not attacked her either.

  9. Geesh..

According to DNC... they will support the one that the people have chosen.. its been proven that if Hillary wins the rest of the primaries.. Obama will still have more votes, more delegates... he will be the winner regardless.

This is the Hillary compaign SCARED!! of Andrews an ex bill clinton cabinet member and ex hillary supporter contacting the Superdelegates to go for Obama. They are scared and they should be.. Its been over and needs to be over before Hillary divides the party.

Dean said they will know when to drop out.. I dont think Hillary knows.. I dont think she will give it up even if she loses. She will be a disaster and a time bomb that will blow up any chance of anyone beating McCain including herself if she was elected.

Right now a dog would beat Mc Cain in a election.. if she keeps it up.. Mc Cain will win regardless... I think she knows this and I think she is playing it as if she cant win... NOBODY can win game. She is destroying the party and Obama just to make it that way. She has no care at all about anyone but herself.

  10. DNC corruption

If this nomination is lost to Hillary Clinton it will be due to the corruption that tainted this primary and all the unfair obstacles her own party placed in her way.

On a fair and level playing field, she would have swept the nomination away long ago.

Harold Ickes reminds me of the boy who killed his parents and then asked the court for mercy because he was an orphan. Hillary Clinton and her gang have relentlessly and ruthlessly attacked Obama as a snob who's friends with terrorists and crackpots, then say he's not electable because his poll numbers are down.

What I don't understand is how HRC is going to get her supporters to back Obama once she gets out. She's spent so much time badmouthing Obama, she'll have no credibility to say he's fit for president.

But maybe that's her plan–make sure McCain wins, then try again in four years as "the saviour" of the party.

Senator Obama on the Today Show 5/1/08:

"After those San Francisco remarks, he was hit with the elitist tag.

Obama knows why he’s attracted the attacks. “Here I am. An African-American named Barack Obama who's running for president,” he said with a chuckle. “I mean, that's a leap for folks.”"

Hillary Clinton: Liar, Liar, pant-suit on fire.

Integrity is more important than experience.

We have had one President who has launched the country into a war based on a lie. Now we have a candidate who has admitted to saying something different than what "she knew to be the truth." Sleep deprivation??? Maybe, but then I don't want her answering the phone at 3 am!

I have been a huge Hillary supporter. I am no longer. We can't afford another liar in the White House. The one we have has already cost over 4,000 lives.

Why isn't Barak addressing this very aggressively?

My question is why can't Hillary close the deal? She's not being attacked by the Republicans, she's not being scrutinized by the MSM, and Obama's been handling her with kid gloves. So if this is the case why isn't her favorable rating going up and why is she still not blowing Obama out of the water in the polls. She's only up a ~2-4 % points in the national polls.
