New poll numbers show bad news for president Bush.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - A new poll suggests that George W. Bush is the most unpopular president in modern American history.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Thursday indicates that 71 percent of the American public disapprove of how Bush his handling his job as president.

"No president has ever had a higher disapproval rating in any CNN or Gallup poll; in fact, this is the first time that any president's disapproval rating has cracked the 70 percent mark," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

"Bush's approval rating, which stands at 28 percent in our new poll, remains better than the all-time lows set by Harry Truman and Richard Nixon (22 percent and 24 percent, respectively) but even those two presidents never got a disapproval rating in the 70s," Holland added. "The previous all-time record in CNN or Gallup polling was set by Truman, 66 percent disapproval in January 1952."

CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider adds, "He is more unpopular than Richard Nixon was just before he resigned from the presidency in August 1974." President Nixon's disapproval rating in August 1974 stood at 67 percent.

The poll also indicates that support for the war in Iraq has never been lower. Thirty percent of those questioned favored the war while 68 percent opposed the conflict.

"Americans are growing more pessimistic about the war," Holland said. "In January, nearly half believed that things were going well for the U.S. in Iraq; now that figure has dropped to 39 percent."

The numbers on the Iraq war come on the five-year anniversary of President Bush's "mission accomplished" moment onboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, when Bush proclaimed that "major combat operations in Iraq have ended."

The record low support for the war in a CNN poll could be one reason behind the president's unpopularity, but it probably is not the only one.

"Support for the war, the assessment of the economy and approval of Mr. Bush are all about the same - bad," Schneider said.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted by telephone from Monday through Wednesday, with 1,008 adult Americans questioned. The poll's sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Worst president with some of the following facts:

1. 3 Trillion dollors deficit from the Clinton's surplus
2. More than 4000 soldiers died and 500 Billions dollors for the most unsuccessful wars
3. USA was most respected during Clinton admin, now that it is most unpopular
4. Highest gas and food prices for no good reasons
5. Katrina's goverment act is the most shame! - even undevelopment country would not happen in the modern history

As I fill-up with $4 gas at the gas station and I think of the elections "stolen" and the lives lost in Iraq, contrasted with the token "effort" put forth to get Osama Bin Laden....I find it helps to at least once yell "THE WORST PRESIDENT EVER!"...after that I'm done wasting my time thinking of "The Decider."

newz4i   May 1st, 2008 1:35 pm ET

71 percent of Americans will not tolerate 935 lies. Will not tolerate the slaughtering innocent Middle Eastern people, children, in the name of American values.

A Bush/McCain ticket will – stay the course – unless "we" stand up to stop it.

And we CAN stop it this November.

Who voted this guy to office not once but twice!

Let's now be swayed by fear appeals yet again because this time the stakes are a lot higher since we are already in a mess....Vote for a voice that can bring a new dawn in America. These are not just hollow words...Hope is the sheet anchor of life...without hope we are just a bunch of cynics criticizing each other till the day we die...

If you are a person who voted for this fool, especially in 2004, now might be the time to start questioning yourself about whether you have the knowledge or judgment to vote in the upcoming election.

Bwaaaah! Mission Accomplished: The most unpopular president in modern history. That's hilarious.

We could have had Al Gore. What a difference that would have made. He might have been stuffy and boring, but he would have had the skills and intellect to be a good, if not great, president. What a shame. The media blew it on that race, too. It's time we asked questions about qualifications and specific plans of action and did not focus on the campaign tactics or personalities. Stuffy beats stupid every time.

toby hill   May 1st, 2008 1:35 pm ET

In current history maybe but as historian remember the 7 years the nation went without a terrorist attack on our soil the tunes will change because of the consistant attacks that will occur with any other President whether being a Republican or Democratic. When we are begging for oil we will also remember the President that called for opening currently restricted areas. There will be a lot of things that will change that also changes people's opinion about how things were.
The truth of the matter is that all 3 Presidential Candidates are current members of Congress and we all know congresses approval ratings are lower than even this President and that will not change when one of them becomes President. We are in a cycle where single issues don't control approval ratings as a whole. It is a cycle of who we dislike the least.

Anonymous   May 1st, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Too bad someone convinced you to get off that bar stool. You were a very successful drunk and probably that is the limit of you ability.

ConsiderThis, FL   May 1st, 2008 1:34 pm ET

George W. Bush is the definition of Peter's Principle. He wasn't qualified when he got elected the first time. He didn't learn anything about being President after nearly 8 years in office. And, what's scary is that enough Americans thought that he was good enough to vote for not once, BUT TWICE! His two terms had absolutely nothing to do with COMPETENCE, but everything to do with POLITICS. I am convinced that the only reason for George W. Bush being President was to open our minds to the reality that an African American or a Woman couldn't do a worst job at being President. This is George W. Bush's legacy – he caused America to be open to people other than white males as President. If it wasn't for George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton wouldn't be given a thought as President.. George W. Bush: What a painful price for America to have paid to see the results of politics over competence............sad........sad.........sad. But, Bush and his buddies are laughing all the way to the bank! The joke is on us, not him. $4 gas – no coincedence.

Bud Curtis...   May 1st, 2008 1:34 pm ET

You're wrong... the president who limitied civil liberties more than any president and had power comparable to that of a king (pre magna carta) was Abraham Lincoln. Bush will be viewed in 50-60 years as a good president who got blamed by a lot of incompetant, uneducated and cowards over things they thought he could control. Was the war a mistake?? perhaps but a large majority of congress approved including the left winged pansies. To leave now would be to spit on all of our fallen... stay the course.

Barbara   May 1st, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Even more startling than the high disapproval rating is the 28% approval rating. Who makes up that 28%? How could 28% of Americans approve the war and torture president?

Jeanne   May 1st, 2008 1:34 pm ET

What difference will it make? He doesn't have to worry about losing his home to foreclosure or robbing Peter to pay Paul just to put gas in his car to get to work. He certainly doesn't have to worry about losing his daughters to war. The guy has spent his life using his family connections and money to avoid difficulty. When he's out of office, he'll make millions more by being hired to speak at corporate engagements, just like his dad.

The man sickens me. Never voted for him...never would. If only the American public had paid more attention to the various scams he employed in his life (read some Molly Ivins if you're interested) perhaps they would have known better than to elect him.

If I ever met him in public, I would spit on him. And I thank God my children are too young to be sent to fight in Iraq.

jeff   May 1st, 2008 1:34 pm ET

This ISNT news, buts it's good to make a point of! History MUST reflect accurately what a colossal failure this guy was to America, and the world so it NEVER happens again!

Scott, Cincinnati   May 1st, 2008 1:34 pm ET

This man represents America to the rest of the world. As the vast majority of Americans beleive that he's infact the worst president ever you would think that he would have changed his cowboy diplomatic ways or at least try to comprimise on anything, but no, not King George. If he had an once of dignity or respect for our country and our standing in the world he would fire Dick, then resign, and President Nancy Pelosi could set the stage for an Obama or Clinton transition. But no, I'll bet Bush stays is office as long as possible and secures a good position for himself somewhere within the oil and gas industry for his later greedy years.

seriously   May 1st, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Tom, are you serious? Wasn't he president during 9/11? I'm pretty sure that counts as an attack on America during his time. Wake up and stop being so ignorant!

Sarah   May 1st, 2008 1:34 pm ET

he proposes amendments to declare a minority group not deserving of the same rights as others (slavery, suffrage, gay marriage). He used 9-11 to go after Iraq (Osama is there, WMD's are there, Well I was lied to), He is spending billions there when they are making 70 billion in oil profits He has swept away the line between church and state and used his "values" to decide policy (yeah, stem cell research is bad, war good.). His "no child left behind" has kids stressing over tests that determine their schools budgets. And American's are being pushed to poverty by him and and group of people who can afford their poor policy. Bush does not care about the average American because he has no concept of the bigger picture.

At least Clinton knew what it was like to struggle, give me Clinton and Monica, and bad land deals ANY DAY.. Over a man who sits for seven minutes listening to a kids story while NY is being attacked. How can anyone defend him?????

Ramesh Wadfhwani   May 1st, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Wow! That's amazing.28% of the American approve his performance as President. Come november, We will have real "Mission Accomplished" when Obama takes over as the President.

Dan   May 1st, 2008 1:34 pm ET

It's amazing that 29% DON'T revile him. He is an un-American cowardly religious zealot. He has no understanding of the Constitution or of American ideals. He serves only his puppet-masters Dick Cheney, big oil, big pharma, big money, and the ayotallas of the Christian right-wing. He never even won hos office in a fair election. It will be good riddance to him on January 20, 2009.

Raymond Cocteau   May 1st, 2008 1:34 pm ET

What his approval rating is or isn't is totally irrelevant. It is what he has done and its effects that have the real impact on peoples lives.

Under George Bush the US dollar has sunken to an all time low against other currencies, oil is at an all time high, gas is at an all time high and the US deficit is at an all time high. I wont even begin to talk about his criminal and un-American occupation of a sovereign land.

George W Bush is not only the most unpopular president in history, he is also the architect of the darkest times in American history..

Chris - Hemet, Ca.   May 1st, 2008 1:33 pm ET

I'm no fan of Osama Bin Laden but when you look at the death and destruction the Bush administration is responsible for in Iraq, the death of Iraqi men women and children not to mention those that are displaced, and the deaths of over 4000 American heroes (so far!) I'd have to say that Bush makes Bin Laden look like Walt Disney!! To see him joking around and dancing, DANCING, on the porch of the White House is unbelievable and unforgivable. The fool doesn't even know what he has done!! Don't get me started on how he's brought our great nation to it's knees!!

Romas   May 1st, 2008 1:33 pm ET

I find that Bush's arrogance, disrespect of the citizens of the USA and total allegiance to big business (in particular the financial sector) as one of the most dominant aspects of his dislikeability. He is so obviously clueless as to what the vast majority of Americans have to deal with.
I used to tell my children that those green things on trees were leaves not dollars; apparently Bush never learned that and thinks everyone can just pick as much money as they need to pay their bills, buy basics and try to strive for the American Dream (whatever that is nowadays).
He made sure no one could declare bankruptcy when the banks steal you blind with their astronomically high credit card interest rates (big business needs the money),
He made sure that we live in fear of our lives so that he can keep fighting a totally unjustified war. No hope with this man.
He has just about bankrupted this country with his policies and doesn't seem to care that other countries own so much of us. Better start learning Chinese. Did you realize that $4.00 per gallon gas is only $2.67 in Euro's – gee about what we were averaging for gas when the dollar and Euro were worth the same.
And our worthless politicians (that supposedly represent us) haven't got the guts to do the right thing and impeach this incompetent person. I think we need term limits on congessmen and senators so we get ride of all the fat cats destroying our country.
Enough..I am getting more irritated just listing things that are wrong.

EBC   May 1st, 2008 1:33 pm ET

He's an idiot.

Americans better be CAREFUL, they are falling for the same Bushman years when it comes to Sen. McCain and Republican traitor Sen. Clinton. She claims to be a democrat but she's been talking and behaving like a Republican!!

Only a Republican behaves like Sen. Clinton has been behaving when it comes to damaging her own party and causing such divisiveness ...

Bob   May 1st, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Hold on America, our long national nightmare is almost over.

But let me say this–I think the country is stupid to reward Bush's henchmen. Rumsfeld is just as guilty as some of Hitler's men. Why should we have to look at Karl Rove's face, or pay Cheney's company money from our tax dollars. We still haven't learned.

Mary   May 1st, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Is anyone really surprised???

zivo24   May 1st, 2008 1:33 pm ET

This is what America gets when people are lured to vote for wedge issues like guns, gay marriage, abortion, etc rather than REAL and TANGENT issues like the economy, health care, our diplomatic standing in the world, etc.

God forbid anybody bring this up and try to steer the conversation to things that really matter!

Oh, wait..that's what Obama was trying to do but the only thing the media and most people chose to hear was the "bitter" comment.

This country is doomed to keep swirling around in a toilet until we start paying attention to important things and stop letting opportunistic politicans and the media divide us over everything else.

Mips   May 1st, 2008 1:33 pm ET

I don't think there has been much anti-Hillary, pro-Obama bias from CNN these. Aside from the news of Sen. Obama's superdelegate gains - which is actual news and not speculation - the majority of the Obama-related stories have focused on Rev. Wright and/or polls about Barack losing ground nationally or not doing as well as Sen. Clinton in swing states - which I believe is only temporary bc of her PA win...

All you Dems out there – this is yet another reason why we need to get the Republicans out of office – McCain is just another McSame.

I know you've got strong feelings for either Clinton or Obama, but it scares the heck out of me when I read comments that if your chosen one doesn't get in, you're going to vote for McCain.

Please, please, please don't do that! Whenever we get the nomination settled, no matter who it is, please stick with the party and vote for the nominee. This country simply will not survive another four (or more) years of Republican McSameness.

He had a privileged life, and so did his dad, and so did his grandfather, and you really can't speak for average Americans unless you know how they feel. GW didn't know and didn't care.

He will pay for his mistakes someday, but right now America is paying for them...at the pump, and in Iraq. We can't afford to make another mistake.

Colleen Graves   May 1st, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Why is it that Americans disapprove of George Bush by a huge margin, at least 3/4s of us hate the way he did his job, yet that many of us wanted to go to Iraq in 2002 and 2003? And why are half of us saying we would vote for McCain? Does that mean that 75% of us hate the way things are going, but 25% of those people are willing to keep it going? What the hell?! This is the beginning of the end of America no matter who takes the job next. Not even Obama can do anything to change how politics work in this country. No matter how hard he tried to say that his politics are different, obviously they are not. His campaign has proved that over and over.

Mike   May 1st, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Ok here's the question.
Who are the blind idiots (28%) who think Bush has done a good job. That's what I want to know because while I don't hate the man as a person it is obvious to anyone who has not being in a cave for the past 7 years that it is a colossal failure.

The 28% gives me much less faith in humanity and I believe those people are inherently selfish and stupid.

Jay   May 1st, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Robert   May 1st, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Oh man Mick, quit blaming the media. I mean are the American people really so stupid. They have a President that go us into an unnecessary war, seems oblivious to the downturn in the economy, and really does not care about high oil prices because it benefits those people who he and Dick Cheney used to hang out with (politically and socially). I calculated that a typical American family is probably paying $3,000 more out of pocket than they were five years ago for heating of the home and gas for the car. This is all after tax money. And the President has never had a short-term or long-term solution to that except to drill more and thus pollute the environment more. We all see this. It is not the media telling us this. The media never really mentions the actual cost out of our pocket. It never really talks about Bush's and Cheney's oil roots except in the occasional story (and never at all on FOX news). If anything, the media has missed the boat. This president deserves lower approval ratings that what he has now (and I did not even mention foreign policy other than the Iraq War).

rlkdsklj   May 1st, 2008 1:29 pm ET

True, Hillary is dishonest and cold hearted, but most politicians are. Bush made himself out to be a bafoon by not being able to give a speech without stumbling and by getting america into a war costing billions of dollars under false prestenses

I find the interesting fact in the article is that Harry Truman's approval rating was rather low during his time, yet he's perceived as very successful today (and I am referencing your poll a while ago that asked if you could bring any president back to office (living or dead) who woudl it be? Many folks voted for Mr. Harry S. Truman. I would not be suprised if the same thing happened to Bush.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but because I strongly support our President, I must do my due diligence and say so!

Many would say not only the most unpopular, but the most despised and disparaged...many feel he wrecked the country on so many dimensions – political, economic, environmental, spiritual that it was beyond belief that such a downgrading of a great country could occur so rapidly..between his violations of the constitution, lies, cronyisms, disreard of public opinion and public resources..a nightmare!

Well ........DUH.... what else is new? Bush has bankrupted our nation, killed thousands of innocent Iraqis, AND thousands of our own young people in this insane war with Iraq! That is and will be his legacy the war with Iraq in which thousand of our troops died in vain. The Iraqi people never asked for us to liberate them, did not ask for democracy, Bush and his cronies want the OIL and so that's why our national debt has soared to $10 TRILLION AND COUNTING!

How can anyone vote for Hillary or McCain when they VOTED FOR THE WAR???????????? How does this make any sense?

Both Hillary and McCain showed us their LACK of judgement and their LACK of wisdom!

People claim that Sen. Obama's staying with the church in Chicago shows a lack of judgement........ BUT REALLY ITS Hillary and McCain whose LACK OF JUDGEMENT has COST us LIVES and the debt we are drowning in!

Please Indiana and North Carolina...... put an end to this madness! VOTE OBAMA!

Steveinaz   May 1st, 2008 1:27 pm ET

These polls are not as accurate as some might think. Democrats are typically more politically active than republicans and thus willing to answer questions from a polling person who calls them at home. Republicans typically are not as politically active, thus the term conservative, as democrates and would probly hang up on a person who calls them at home to participate in a poll. This is why there are always suprises during presedential elections, ecause republicans are not so active during the primary portion of elections. They come out during the final elections. This is a problem for republicans, which need to get more active in politics. If it were not for Iraq Bush would probly do better in these polls, but since democrats are typically against any kind of war the poll shows much lower rating for Bush.

Danny   May 1st, 2008 1:27 pm ET

A proud moment for the country and the Presidency... I'm so sorry America that I actually voted for Bush the first time and gave him a leg up. I'm at least partially responsible for this arrogant, cupable, unconscionable, buffoon's ascent to the White House and subsequent destruction of everything from peoples' (our Military and Afghan and Iraqi civilians and members of the few allies we have left) lives to the economy. Bush isolationism applies equally to his country-people as well as to the people of the world, if you don't agree with him, he does everything in his power to isolate and/or ostracize you and your message. I'm sorry America!

Bobby   May 1st, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Jeremiah Wright can't come close to the damage this man has done. He was given free reign to destroy the country and squander our good will and reputation abroad. This is why the republicans are trying to keep us distracted from talking about real issues this time. They can't win on real issues so they're manufacturing silly ones to keep us less focused.

Carrie   May 1st, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Bush has said that history will vindicate him, but he's no more correct on that then he has been on anything else.

His administration has destroyed much of the evidence, so we may never know just how bad of a presidency his was and how much his administration broke the law, but his legacy will be one of absolute failure.

Allan   May 1st, 2008 1:26 pm ET

I wonder why after all he has done for this country.
1. Invaded 2 countries that were no threat to us.
2.Took us from paying down the national debt to more that doubling it.
3 .Made us the most hated country in the world
4. Gas prices, which he said he would hold down with his conections, are now highest in history and going up.
5. If he had lied about sex he would be impeached. Instead he and his "cronies" should be tried for war crimes.
6. I could go on and on but you know the rest.

Think America   May 1st, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Take a look at the end result of what fear tactics will do. Most people knew he had done a poor job by 2004, and they voted for him anyway. Way to go America, just keep repeating stupid mistakes until....well until you have to pay $4.00 a gallon for gas. What's the next stupid mistake you can make–oh, I know vote in John McSame, then we can pay $8.00 a gallon for gas to keep three wars going.

Brilliant move.

Why didn't you mention that Bill Clinton had a 60% approval rating when he left office. Oh yea I forgot CNN promotes Obama and trashes Clinton. For the last 3 days CNN has had people on for Obama. Larry King had on the lady Flavia she would not even let anyone else talk. She went on and on attacking Clinton. I hope they never let her on CNN again. Then Larry King had Micheal Moore on last night to attack Clinton. Then they put Michelle Obama on and she never answered andything, except to say Obama gave a good race speech. That interview was a waste of time. So who is CNN going to interview today to attack Clinton? Jack Cafferty attacks her everyday. CNN has turned into nothing more than a network for Obama.

Paul in Seattle   May 1st, 2008 1:24 pm ET

I knew back in '00 that we were in for a rough time the second he won. But at the same time, George W. Bush has faced an onslaught of major challenges his entire presidency. This should also be noted. I'm sure the difficulty rating of his presidency is ranked as one of the highest in modern history. I feel for him as a person, but am highly disappointed in his interpersonal skills and his lack of grace in dealing with foreign governments.

All I have to say to all my friends and co workers who did support him all these years, is I told you so! This man has had the ,its myway or the highway attitude since he got into office. He has been the most divisive President in History. He has single handedly destroyed our relations with the world. He has LIED directly to the American People, and his cabinet. I feel he should be impeached by all his practices, but am glad we didnt waste the countries time doing it as we did B. Clinton. He and Cheney convinced illiterate simpletons that the war was a good idea – and that had racist overtones (well, some Arabs attacked us on 9/11, so we're going to attack some other Arabs that had nothing to do with it, but we have to get back at Arabs).

I blame, not Bush, but Cheney and the neo-cons for creating this disaster. Hey Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Feith, Perl – you "arrogant, hate-mongers" have been awfully quiet lately. What's wrong?

Slick Clinton made all his decisions based on polls so he could always be on the popular "side" of the public, hits on interns while president, has a sexual relationship with one in OUR Oval office, gets impeached for perjury and other crimes, does nothing to fight terrorism in 8 years in office which helped lead to what happened on 9/11, is a pathological liar proven many times over, and HE leaves office with high approval ratings. Now he makes tens of millions giving the same stupid speech over and over and over. Go figger.

Bush has tried to prevent another 9/11 and, regardless of his poll numbers which he doesn't care about, is determined to keep our country safe while he is in charge. For good or bad regarding his policies, he is dogged in his efforts, and should be commended.

President Bush has done more to harm this country, particularly in the area of diminished liberty and freedom for every American, than anyone ever elected as President. But wait a minute, the Republicans in congress aided and abetted this man on every issue and at every turn. They supported him because he was the Republican candidate and ignored their responsibility to be elected representative of the people.

In that respect, I almost wish that those who voted for Bush had to live with him as President for another four years. Then, it might be another 50 years before another Republican would be elected to that office.

Well, now this man can't have a beer anywhere except the confines of his ranch. Nobody wants to go anywhere near him.

I voted for Gore and Kerry, at least we'd still have good standing in the world and at home.

That unpopularity is certainly warranted. G. W. Bush is by far the worst president in the history of the republic. There have been others who have been corrupt (Harding), incompetent and ineffective (Carter, H. W. Bush), but none have damaged this country, our international reputation, our economy, the workings of the government, and our Constitution than Dubya.

I wonder how many future presidents it will take to get us back to the stature we had under Bill Clinton.

McCain is Bush-lite and supports the policies of the Bush Administration-the war, the economic policies, approval of certain speciailized interrogations (read "torture"), etc., etc.

And in MODERN history, I highly doubt it, I mean, how long has freakin' CNN even been around? Nothing is going to hide the fact that even though Bush is unpopular the republicans still have a chance to take the house because the Democrats are incompetent.

You guys keep on pushing for Hillary to win and see what you get. And If I am not mistaken, the democrat led congress is being polled as the worst of ALL TIME.

Obviously, Dubya didn't pay attention to Maw and Paw when they told him to wear his cowboy hat in the hot Texas sun – obviously boiled his brains.

On the other hand – you have got to admire Karl Rove – the architect- who got him elected as Governor of Texas and then President for 2 terms.

He has certainly set some HIGH standards for Obama to meet – hopefully Barry won't disappoint!

Mike   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

He would be beat by Obama if Obama gets in. People will see Obama was just a big blowed up balloon and nothing more.

That Jay guy from Canada   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Yeah, and we don't want no 'Bush Lite' with John McCain...

G08BAMA !

Af.   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

This is why I don't understand why so many people are voting for McCain. Are people that stupid?

Yes we can!   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

mccain is mcbush......democratics will win this fall!

NickNas   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

He has had that rateing for many of us LONG before he "Won" the first time. If there were ANY Justice in this world ALL of those who voted for this CLOWN should have to publicly appologize to the rest of us who tried to tell them all along that THIS is EXACTLY what would happen.

Kenneth   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Why isn't his disaproval rating 100% ?

Mike   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

I quick poll of my household and co-workers validates the results of this poll. I will never understand how so many people could cast a vote for someone so unqualified for the presidency. I hope we are all smarter this November.

Scott Glenn, Wa   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Really no one likes GWB, now what are we going to do?

seymore, pa   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

HE EARNED THE TITLE ONE BAD IDEA AT A TIME.

I can't wait to celebrate America's new holiday on Jan 9th 2009. Bush Liberation Day....

Duh   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Wow, didn't see THIS one coming...*dripping with sarcasm*

Beth   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

What truly astounds me is that there are still one on three or four people who think he is doing a good job.

some guy   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

bought time we realized this

Joe from Indiana   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Well, get ready for Bush No. 2 ===> McCain. That's what will happen if we keep our focus on things that don't really matter in the campaign trail. Who cares about what Reverend Wright said. I need to be a able to pay my bills, put food on the table, take my cousin out of Iraq. That's what I care about.

AK   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Barely newsworthy. Isn't it obvious enough?

Adam in INdy   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

This is what happens when you vote for a "likable Good Guy"

HILLARY 08!!!!!!!

Chuck, Oregonians for Obama   May 1st, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Is anyone surprised by this?

HH   May 1st, 2008 1:18 pm ET

And if he was running again you would have morons vote for him.

Karin   May 1st, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Not a surprise at all. Unpopular war, slipping economy, civil rights violations, high gas prices...the list goes on. Tell me something we ALL don't know.

Interesting, that his approval rating is at 28%. Higher than both Nixon and Truman? That seems nearly impossible, but then again people said it was impossible for him to win re-election in 2004.

Anonymous   May 1st, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Really? Twenty-nine percent approve of the job he's done?

Sita Reddy   May 1st, 2008 1:18 pm ET

He needs to do some thing about the Gas prices, and thr raising food prises.

Steve C   May 1st, 2008 1:18 pm ET

This administration has managed to trash our economy and has failed in every foreign policy area. This Iraq war blunder will haunt us for years, much like Vietnam. Absolutely the worst administration in my 53 years of living, and that was some tough competition to beat. Mission accomplished indeed.

Chris from San Antonio   May 1st, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Polls don't matter to Bush.
He'll follow the will of the people whether you like it or not.

DD, New York   May 1st, 2008 1:18 pm ET

You know those presidential wall charts that are made of really really thin paper than you can purchase when you go to federal landmark attractions. You know...the ones that have a picutre of every president from George Washington down to the current one, it lists the president's name and years in office? Well, I was seriously getting one and crossing out GWB's picture and writing "NG" underneath.

craig   May 1st, 2008 1:18 pm ET

If you ask the republicain party he's doing a great job! I see now theres an ad out that is saying how the the Dems. are since taking over congress in 06 quote gas is up to $3.50 a gallon like its their fault, if you remember it was $.99 a gallon the month before Bush took office thats almost a 400% increase since we've had him but its the dems.

This poll is correct, as Hillary said in 03 he'll go down in history as the worst pers. in our history.....Good Call Hillary

carmen   May 1st, 2008 1:18 pm ET

This is why McCain can't win.– once Hillary steps aside and Obama can concentrate on his real opponent, that is.

Mark Anthony   May 1st, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Well at least he's winner at something, ha ha ha.

S Mick   May 1st, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Is it possibly because the media has made him out to be a bafoon, and everyone else jumped on the band wagon?

Nothing he has done has made me more ashamed than how the Clintons act.

They are dark hearted, dishonest people. It bothers me that others either refuse to see it, or worse, they see it too, and simply do not care.

Pam   May 1st, 2008 1:18 pm ET

We need a poll to tell us that?

Maury Dann   May 1st, 2008 1:17 pm ET

"SO?" – Dick Cheney

Do you really think these guys care what the public thinks? This is the least accountable administration in modern American history. Years from now people will wonder how Bush/Cheney actually got to "serve" (the idea that these guys are public servants is laughable) for 8 years instead of being booted out of office or impeached and convicted.

shocked, I tell you   May 1st, 2008 1:17 pm ET

The remaining 29 percent are more surprising than the 71 percent who rightly disapprove. President Bush's eight years will go down in history, and continue to go down in legendary proportions.

Margerie   May 1st, 2008 1:17 pm ET

The face of $4.00 a gallon gasoline. I hate him.

frank   May 1st, 2008 1:17 pm ET

about time we started waking up

Joseph Adewole   May 1st, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Bush will even be rated better than John McCain and Hillary Clinton; l can bet my life for this...watch out

SUSIE JACOBS   May 1st, 2008 1:17 pm ET

I WASN'T POLLED, SO HOW CAN YOU SAY 71 PERCENT OF AMERICANS ARE UNHAPPY WITH HIM. NO ONE I KNOW HAS BEEN POLLED

Josh Maloney, Oakland, CA   May 1st, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Even though unpopular, he still deserves a fair trial.

Clive   May 1st, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Wow! And Hillary supporters claim they will vote for McBush? Is it strange that Hillary and her supporters share the same trait? It's me or nothing!

Jenny   May 1st, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Dear CNN,

America knew this a long time ago. We hold Bush directly responsible for ruining this country over the last seven years. He needs to apologize and make amends by correcting all of his mistakes. The American people do not like him and he has damaged our reputation in the world.

If John McSame wants to attach his star to Bush's wagon–go right ahead. His poll ratings will be down shortly before he watches Barack take the oath of office.

Note to John: Just as GW tried to linki himself to Lincoln and George Washington, and failed, you will as well. You are nothing like Lincoln and you will never be our president.

r sisk, nevada   May 1st, 2008 1:16 pm ET

This is news? I am surprised his disapproval rating isn't higher. It is going to take years to recover from this disastrous administration. Clearly the worst Prez I have ever lived through.

@americans   May 1st, 2008 1:16 pm ET

this is old news!

we are just waiting come January '09 so we can start our lives afresh with a democrat in the WH!

OBAMA '08!

george   May 1st, 2008 1:16 pm ET

and why isnt anybody actively pursuing impeachment procedures? this guy (the pres) deserves to be in prison. hes a war-criminal a liar, and a thief who has backrupt this country and our foreseeable future.

Shane   May 1st, 2008 1:16 pm ET

He should be in Jail.

Sesay, former Clinton backer   May 1st, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Wow, this is rediculous. He probably doesn't care now since he is leaving anyway.

Kimberly, Alabama   May 1st, 2008 1:16 pm ET

That's what you get for stealing an election!

Anonymous   May 1st, 2008 1:16 pm ET

What a surprise that a partisan CNN poll would find that?

Larry in Michigan   May 1st, 2008 1:16 pm ET

I just paid $104 dollars to fill up my truck. It sits in the driveway of my home that is worth 10% less than what it was a year ago.

So no, I don't like Bush either because his "leadership" is the main reason we're in this situation.

Wake up everyone! Talking about Rev. Wright is a distraction. Let's start talking about issues and solving problems!

Adam, Houston, TX   May 1st, 2008 1:15 pm ET

With all of the crimes and ineptitude his administration has brought upon our nation, I'm surprised anyone still approves of this idiot.

Iska Alter   May 1st, 2008 1:15 pm ET

If George Bush is the most unpopular president in modern history (a fact I do not doubt), why is it that the Democrats in Congress seem so afraid of offending him? Given his incompetence, why must the "opposition" party (please note the ironic quotation marks), aid and abet his inadequacy?

Michael   May 1st, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Not that I'm defending him, but he started off well and has come to a very bad ending.

History isn't looking upon G.W. Bush with much favor anyhow, maybe his campgain was doomed from the start?

Bubba   May 1st, 2008 1:15 pm ET

JuST like u libruls, George Bush is your presnit, maybe u want Osama hahah – stupid dem DUmmies.

Juliemn   May 1st, 2008 1:15 pm ET

And congress is at 70, not that I support Bush, but tell it like it is.Since dems took over congress, thanks to the far-left Nancy and friends, what did you expect!

Wow.......   May 1st, 2008 1:15 pm ET

I wonder if this is the legacy he was looking to leave behind when he ran for president. But what I really want to know is where are all the idiots who voted for the dummy and put him in office in the first place!!!! Now everyone wants to complain about how craptastic a president he is yet he won the popular vote! I knew from the beginning he was ridiculous!

Sesay, former Clinton backer   May 1st, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Wow, this is rediculous. He probably doesn't care now since he is leaving anyway.

John Adams   May 1st, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Is it possible for Bush to get 100% disapproval rating before they shoot him out of a cannon next January

Anonymous   May 1st, 2008 1:15 pm ET

He is good, but lack strategy and he focused much outside policy in which and at the sametime loose lives for unmatch and unaccomplished result.

James T   May 1st, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Bushes response: "So? I couldn't care less".

"Didn't you see that with Katrina?
Didn't you see that with the war?
Didn't you see that with tax breaks for my friends and not you?
Didn't you see that with my failing to care about overseeing the mortgage crisis?

When are you peasants going to realize, I never have cared what you think about me"?

"None of you many anything to me".

mike e. cooney   May 1st, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Yes,it is a terrible thing to free 43 million citizens of this planet from death, torture, and tyrrany as he did in Afganistan and Iraq.Plus, America just completed 51 straight months of positive economic growth,an AMERICAN HISTORICAL RECORD since 1776!! That also,is a terrible thing! Most Americans are sheep,I would state that 85% are,and who in GODS name wants to be a sheep!?

wymer chatelain   May 1st, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Thank the lord, we don't have much longer with Bush.. Although not possible, another 4 years of this and we would be a third world country.

Drew in Newburyport, MA   May 1st, 2008 1:14 pm ET

To use a recent VP Cheney quote "So?". President Bush doesn't care because he's convinced that history will judge him otherwise. Don't look for any change in any of his failed policies because he believes that in the end they are right.

The Truth   May 1st, 2008 1:14 pm ET

I get a kick out of the man, but he sucks as a president. Case and point, stop the popular voting for name brands. Sen. Obama is clearly the best candidate; embrace real change.

Xavier, St. Louis, MO   May 1st, 2008 1:14 pm ET

He has to be the worst US president ever!

Mark Sachse   May 1st, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Really? Is this a shock to anybody? Now would be a good time to remove the "W" sticker from your Hummer.

Ian   May 1st, 2008 1:14 pm ET

That mission accomplished banner is hilarious. The really funny part is that he and the congress just keep doing what they're doing and no one cares enough to do anything about it. Instead they'll come to the CNN ticker and think they've done their part.

Good work everyone.

jon   May 1st, 2008 1:14 pm ET

wow – a shocker

Jason   May 1st, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Bush doesn't care. His family has money, and he's a 2-time sitting president. We have nobody to blame but ourselves. We voted him in... twice. SHAME ON AMERICA!

leon levin   May 1st, 2008 1:14 pm ET

When the media covers Hillary's Magnequench lie, she will be below George Bush's numbers.

What i want to know is who are the 27% who still approve of the job this Buffoon is doing?

Greg   May 1st, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Bush did it to himself. The Republican Party did it to itself. Republicans are to blame for every economic disaster and military travesty ever caused. It's time to get off the couch and go out to Brickbat Alley.

history will show   May 1st, 2008 1:12 pm ET

he was better than the pundents gave him credit for.winh all you want liberals... I blame you for the recession... PANIC PANIC PANIC... all you're good for. Who remember Jimmy Carter? whom, might i add, was far and away the worst president... maybe in all of US history.

Mike   May 1st, 2008 1:12 pm ET

This man will go down as one of the most infamous people in the history of this country.

James S   May 1st, 2008 1:12 pm ET

I am suprised his approval rating is that high. I dont think he really cares. Being that he is a self serving President, he has accomplished his goals. And just think, if McCain wins we can have have four more years of Bush policies. And being that people are distracted so easy and have short memories McCain may have a shot. WAKE UP AMERICA !!!

Cynthia   May 1st, 2008 1:12 pm ET

I can believe that.

Mike Santner   May 1st, 2008 1:12 pm ET

And the 28% that approve of his job as president are probably making money hand over fist by his incompetence. I voted for the guy I'm ashamed to say.

Linda Esen   May 1st, 2008 1:11 pm ET

WOW and this is a surprise ...even Republicans don't like him. I personally have nothing against a guy who sent my brother to war where he died – a war he lied about. But WAIT he wasn't president – Chaney was !!!!!!

honkey white guy from cali   May 1st, 2008 1:11 pm ET

It is not surprising that he has such a low rating! The best part is we only have to deal with him till next Jan then Sen Obama will come into office and clean Washington up and flush out the lobbyist and corp America that owns our government and greedy corrupt people.

Go Obama 08 Yes We Can!!!!!

TX_GAL   May 1st, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Bush is the most unpopular president in modern history? Is that news? You might as well do a news story on "the sky is blue".

kia   May 1st, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Duh!!!!!!

common sense   May 1st, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Well, an illegal war based on lies of WMD, cheaper gas prices if we go to war, and not attempting the catch of bin Laden, Bush chose to take down Saddam Hussein. Hussein was a nefarious figure in history, BUT, he was not responsible for 9/11. We know that for certain.

Meanwhile, bin Laden is living it up somewhere in the far east.

Where do these low approval ratings come from??? It surely couldn't be the economy, and his smug attitude when he attempts to defend his Commander In Chief positions.

We need a president with good judgement. We need Senator OBAMA!!

Join Joe Andrew from Indiana, Ben Chandler from my homestate of KY, and John Patrick of Texas, and SWITCH to the uniter, not the divider!

We can't vote for the same people and expect different results America!!

Farrell, Houston, Tx   May 1st, 2008 1:11 pm ET

The most popular thing about Bush is failure.

Bob   May 1st, 2008 1:11 pm ET

My brother always ask: Who the heck are that 28 that approve? It almost strikes me as mental problem at this point. I didn't like Bush I or Reagan but I got why some people did. I wasn't even a big of Clinton, didn't approve or disapprove, but this guy is ruining America.

John Adkisson   May 1st, 2008 1:10 pm ET

28% approval? I haven't met a single person who approves of his performance since Katrina. This means in any American group almost one in three believe he has done a good job. I would love to see a breakdown of this group in a poll to see if each and every one of them gets their news from Fox, has no education, and believes government should be incompetent. Astonishing, we Americans.

Wake Up US   May 1st, 2008 1:10 pm ET

CNN is obviously an Obama backer. It's headlines on the race for the presidency are either pro-Obama or anti-Clinton. Whatever happened to impartiality in the media?

I have been part of that 71% since 2000.

Now the same idiots are falling for Hillary Clinton's distractions and conservative social issues push.. Maybe its time to listen to the smart people

Ah thats sad. Hard to be black and think independantly. I'm sure he was under a ton of pressure. Shame on Obama.

Way to draw out the Bush Haters CNN. I guess you're trying to change the subject OFF Obama and his Black Liberation Theology approach to life/politics??

wwf   May 1st, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Yet 70% of the Republicans think he has done a good job. Talk about being out of touch with the rest of the country. Just think this man is upset with congress and still cannot understand why the economy is the way it is. Now McCain says his and Clinton's gas tax is just a small short fix. That is not what he was saying a coupld of days ago.

Venus   May 1st, 2008 1:05 pm ET

This is GREAT!

This is the banner that Mc Bush will have to deal with!

Go Obama!

frank, las vegas   May 1st, 2008 1:05 pm ET

President Bush is a good man no matter how upopular he may be. The press should focus more on how to evolve a bi-partisan solution our problems than attacking his personality!

DJ in TX   May 1st, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Doesn't really matter at this point. He's on his way out. President bush is a good man at heart, but his policies and some decisions were way off. NO president can actually change the economy as it is not controlled by government except indirectly with our without regulations. The war is HIS legacy as he had direct control on that.

As a Democrat, I'm tired of all the Bush bashing (or any President bashing). Even though I totally disagree with his policies, I would still shake his hand and give the respect the Office of the President deserves.

The Corp   May 1st, 2008 1:05 pm ET
