A blogger has taken a particular interest in Al Franken's Senate campaign.

EAGAN, Minnesota (AP) — Senate candidate Al Franken wants to talk about jobs, health care and global warming. Republican blogger Michael Brodkorb wants to talk about Franken's failure to pay all his income taxes on time.

Guess what everyone is talking about?

From the kitchen table in his tranquil suburban neighborhood, Brodkorb for the last year has used his blog "Minnesota Democrats Exposed" to launch a furious political assault on Franken. He's labeled the former comedian and liberal commentator a "mean-spirited and un-Minnesotan" candidate who's running a "desperate and ridiculous" campaign.

That's routine stuff in the world of political blogging, but in the last two months Brodkorb has scored two direct hits that have the Franken campaign reeling. Brodkorb scooped the traditional media by detailing extensive bookkeeping problems in New York and California that ultimately prompted Franken, this week, to pay about $70,000 in back taxes to 17 states.

The stories have knocked Franken off balance as he prepares to take on Sen. Norm Coleman, in what's expected to be one of the most expensive and toughest-fought U.S. Senate races this year.

Democrats have tried to downplay Brodkorb by portraying him as part of coordinated Republican attacks.

"When people talk about the right wing noise machine, that's what it is," said Franken spokesman Andy Barr.

But even some of his harshest critics admit Brodkorb, who has no real counterweight on the left, has been effective.

A typical Brodkorb scoop is splashed across his Web site under bold-faced banners like "Shock!" or "Breaking News!" The items are often followed soon after by a news release from the state Republican Party on the same subject, and many of his themes find their way into Coleman's talking points.

In person, Brodkorb is a dark-haired, soft-spoken and polite 34-year-old whose infant twin daughters sometimes nap not far from his laptop.

The blog started as a labor of love, he said.

"I do think it has some influence right now, but that's never what I sat down to do. This was always about a political junkie looking for an outlet," Brodkorb said.

He said he grew up in a family that wasn't political, and his interest in Republican politics began in college. He said he believes in "the fundamentals of being a Republican — less government, individual freedom, personal responsibility, strong national defense."

He dropped out of college in 1995 to work on the failed U.S. Senate campaign of Rudy Boschwitz. In the late '90s, Brodkorb worked for state Senate Republicans, where he started to learn how to do "opposition research" — digging up dirt on opponents. He did it well enough to become director of research for the state Republican Party, and served in similar roles for several
Republican campaigns.

Brodkorb's critics suggest some of his best stories are leaked from Republican campaigns, the state party and Republican-affiliated groups as part of a coordinated effort against Democrats. That includes Dave Colling, who managed the 2006 congressional campaign of Keith Ellison, a regular Brodkorb target.

"It's about making them talk about something they don't necessarily want to talk about," Colling said.

Brodkorb won't detail his methods, except to say he "gets tips all the time from Democrats and Republicans" and independently researches them before posting anything.

Brodkorb wouldn't reveal how he first got the notion to check up on Franken's business dealings in New York and California, but said simple searches on government Web sites delivered the goods: New York had levied a $25,000 judgment against Franken's private corporation for failing to carry workers' compensation insurance, and the corporation was in forfeiture in California.

Brodkorb often covers news conferences and other planned political events, but does most of his blogging from his home in the St. Paul suburb of Eagan. He lives just down the street from Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty — whom, he's quick to note, he considers a "rock star."

Brodkorb started Minnesota Democrats Exposed anonymously in 2004, when he was still a paid employee of the state Republican Party. He outed himself in 2006 only after a Democratic public relations consultant sued him for defamation for an item Brodkorb posted. A judge dismissed the lawsuit last year, saying Brodkorb deserved the same legal protections as newspapers and traditional broadcasters against lawsuits by public figures.

He first asserted himself as a political force in the 2006 election cycle by reporting that Democratic rising star Matt Entenza had hired a private investigator to investigate fellow Democrat Mike Hatch. The revelation eventually forced Entenza out of the race for attorney general.

Hatch was a main target that year, too, with Brodkorb portraying the Democratic candidate for governor as divisive and mean-spirited. When Hatch was accused of calling one reporter a "Republican whore," his temper became the story, and Hatch went on to lose narrowly to Pawlenty.

"I know there were people around me who would get glued to that stuff, who would be checking it every few hours," Hatch said.

Brodkorb shrugs off Democrats' claims that he's a Republican operative by saying he's never been paid to blog. He said he earns a living through corporate, non-political consulting work, and
would disclose on his blog if he does any paid campaign work this year.

Nevertheless, as state Republican Party Chairman Ron Carey put it: "I'm glad he's on our side."

CNN IS not saying anything about Peter Paul like ALL OTHER NETWORKS Because Peter Paul is a professional liar who has four separate criminal convictions, two for fraud. His video repackages a series of seven-year-old false claims about Senator Clinton that have already been rejected by the California state courts, the Justice Department, the Federal Election Commission, and the Senate Ethics Committee.

Maybe CNN should talk about Larry Sinclair

TO ALL THE OBAMA SUPPORTERS:
Since the media is refusing to reveal/report the Paul vs Clinton fraud case in court right now, we need to create our own movement and flood every blog on CNN and every blogging website on the World Wide Web with information from the case regardless of what the topic is. For those that don't know - Google Paul vs Clinton and hold on to your shirt with what you read!! L.A., California Case #BC304174

For those of you who think this case has been thrown out – is hasn’t, or is irrelevant – think again:

"In the landmark civil fraud case against Bill Clinton in Los Angeles, where the former President is charged with defrauding a Hollywood dot com millionaire to help Hillary Clinton obtain more than $1.2 million from him for her 2000 Senate campaign, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Aurelio Munoz ruled on Friday, April 25, 2008 that Hillary Clinton would not be required to testify in a sworn deposition as a material witness in the case until AFTER the November election!."
“Had Senator Clinton be forced to testify under oath, as a material witness and beneficiary of the fraud that her husband is being sued for before the Democratic Convention, her remote chances for being nominated the party candidate would have been unquestionably destroyed.”
“Paul contends his case will expose "the institutional culture of corruption embraced by the Clinton leadership of the Democratic Party," which seeks to attain "unaccountable power for the Clintons at the expense of the rule of law and respect for the constitutional processes of government."

Just like the GOP (and Hillary), dig up dirt, and talk about the color, shade, and texture, then talk about how Jesus would see the dirt, how the American people see the dirt, and if it is in fact, dirt. Debate the issues and let the voters decide on the issues, and if it'd dirt.

How do people like Brodkorb sleep at night? He is a true Republican, up there with the likes of Rove and his cronies. I feel sorry for his family.

Scott   May 2nd, 2008 10:04 am ET

As someone who has several family members living in that state I can tell you that the majority of people in this great state see this for what it is. Norm Coleman is terrified over the fact that Mr. Franken is about to kick him out of the Senate. If people would read the facts instead of the fabrications they would see that there was no misdeed done on Al Frankens part. This is just a hatchet job by the GOP to keep a Iraq war profiteer in office.

Interesting, though I would rather use my space to talk about the election.

I'm so sick of hearing: "Obama is losing support…," Obama dropping in the poles…" yet Superdelegates are flocking to him.

He will not win in the General Election, regardless as to where he stands now.

Forget about his standing, who can win???

What is this, "White Guilt," do the powers that be believe that if the Superdelegates over turn the popular vote (that Clinton technically won), that the Blacks will riot in the streets?

Race is so involved in this, so much that the real issues have gotten placed on the back burner; those who say otherwise are fooling themselves.

Go Hillary!!!!!

I'm so tired of hearing comments like: "We got to put a brother in the houze,…" or "Time to paint the White Houze black…

Paul from Minneapolis   May 2nd, 2008 10:10 am ET

Fraken paid his taxes–it was his accountant that flubbed paying the proper states their portions. Of course the anti-truth conservatives want to make this into something like "Franken didn't pay his taxes". But Franken did pay his taxes. Again, it was his accountant that messed up. But since conservatives cannot argue the merits of his policies they attack this failure of his accountant.

Wesley Snipes will go to jail shortly for tax evasion. While Franken stiffed 17 states for a far less dollar amount, it's still a felony punishable by prison time. Minnesota is largely blue in its politics, but honestly–any other Minnesotan who dared do that would face prison. Do you really want someone who thinks they are above the most basic law that you (perhaps grdugingly) obey is suited to serve you at the highest legislative level in Government? Coleman might be GOP (a dirty idea in this election cycle it seems) but he pays his taxes, and by all accounts has served Minnesota pretty well. Remember–you get what you vote for, and Congress' –that's the DEM CONTROLLED congress–approval rating is lower than "W's," a fact that the largely liberal biased MSM doesn't spend a lot of time reporting because it might provide time for a more open and honest debate from both sides. PRINT THAT CNN!

"""Trial date to be set in Paul vs. Clinton on February 21, 2008

The Case Management Conference hearing in Paul v Clinton et al on February 21, in Los Angeles Superior Court will finally set a trial date in the long delayed civil fraud case and it will set a schedule for discovery that will include the sworn depositions of the entire Clinton family and the Clinton hierarchy of the Democratic Party.

A trial was set for March 2007, but it was delayed due to an appeal of a lower-court's decision to dismiss Sen. Clinton as a defendant. The California Supreme Court upheld the decision, but Sen. Clinton, nevertheless, will be required to testify under oath along with her husband as material witnesses.

Seven years ago Peter Paul began whistleblowing to the government and alerting the media of numerous illegalities committed by Hillary and Bill Clinton in order to win Hillary’s first election to public office.

The multi-million dollar donor to Hillary’s Senate campaign that caused Hillary’s finance director to be indicted and tried in May, 2005, for hiding his contributions, and whose complaint to the FEC resulted in a finding that Hillary’s campaign broke the law resulting in the only FEC fine imposed against Hillary’s campaign, will begin the discovery process leading to a trial in Los Angeles later this year of the Clintons and others for destroying Paul’s public company.

Sharon Minnesota   May 2nd, 2008 10:27 am ET

Citizens, watch Glen Beck on HNN today. He will be airing one full hour of the Rev. Wrights sermons. He is also on tonight. You can then decide if the media/public were judging him (Rev. Wright) by just a few tiny sound bites. You can also decide if you believe Barack and Michelle Obama's claims that they had no knowledge of and didn't share the Rev's philosophy on American patriotism or racism.

Ask yourself, would you have stayed in that church and sacrificed your family by listening to that rant for 20 years? Was it just Chicago style politics influencing Barack Obama's choice of church and pastor giving him credibility with a powerful influence in the black community? That would be politics as usual, not the new Washington politics like he preaches now.

Don't kill the messenger, just watch Glen Beck's program and decide for yourself what's going on with Rev. Wright, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama. Our nation deserves that much. Find out the truth and use your good judgment when choosing the next president of the USA.

CNN has decided over the past week that Rev. Wright is the single most important issue facing Americans today, yet will not even report the Paul v. Clinton case. Seems as if they're just as "fair and balanced" as Faux News.

He is sinking! Remember people, it's not all about the numbers and simple calculations. It's called Super Delegates, they have free will and entitled, actually they are encuraged to vote for who ever they like. They presonally vote on who they personally feel or think who would be the best President. It was designed that way. Let the process run it's course. It will be one thing if Barack had the majority, but everything is almost relatively split. He has relatively small lead in Pledge Delegates and narrowly behind in Super Delegates. Number of states won or lost were never in the equation. He has a narrow lead in the Popular Vote, but thats not in the equation either.
Everyone seems to forget that Hillary won MI and FL, both would of given her a lead in Pledge Delegates, Super Delegates and Popular Vote.
Now you say they dont count, because they moved the date. Thats fine if you believe that, I dont. Both are swing states, both matter come November. If McCain wins those two states in General Election, It's over. Period!
Let the process run its course, and let the Super Delegates decide come June 4th and we will unify behind that candidate. Whether it Hillary or Barack, or Mickey Mouse…….etc. etc. etc.

I question a guy like Norm Coleman when he has to go after Franken

not run on his record. I remember a guy named Rudy Boschwitz that
went after Paul Wellstone and lost when he went after Paul. Hopefully
this will also take down Norman.

former minnesotan   May 2nd, 2008 10:37 am ET

Gotta love the Republican spin and half-truths…..what they don't tell you is the whole story.

If you actually look into the facts, Franken didn't avoid paying income taxes. His accountant screwed up. At the direction of his accountant, he paid all of his state income tax on his earnings to the state of his residency, but he should have paid them in the state he made the earnings (fees from speaking engagements, mainly). Honest mistake for an individual, a screw up by his accountant that tells me Franken needs a better accountant. What the story doesn't tell is Franken will be filing with the NY and MN departments of treasury to get back some of the taxes he mistakenly overpayed.

As far as the workmans comp insurance in NY, working for a company that has a few employees in NY, the NY labor rules seem to be a moving target, and they look for any way to ding businesses for a fine.

Matt, Minneapolis, MN   May 2nd, 2008 10:37 am ET

Franken only released part of his tax history, and not even enough to get an idea of what he owed. In reality he may have been paying to those states in the past and his accountant did a bad job and didn't file in those other states. At best Franken is totally ignorant of his tax situation and totally oblivious that you pay tax in the state you earn the money. At worst he's commiting fraud. MN doesn't need another celebrity, carpetbagger, politician we should have learned our lesson with Ventura.

I never thought I would see those who call themselves journalists, so blatantly give us biased coverage. One, or two of CNN's top dogs have no problem making Obama look bad at every opportunity, while gushing over Clinton. Walter Cronkite's reputation is safe. It was comforting to watch, and listen to Cronkite, and his colleagues report unbiased news coverage…especially something as important as our Presidential election process. It is enough to make one wonder what their motives are…….???

Mike   May 2nd, 2008 10:41 am ET

When CNN puts this one on their front page you KNOW Al Franken has to be on his way out. It looks like this "lying liar" has been found out.

Amy   May 2nd, 2008 10:43 am ET

I have decided that between Clinton's approval going up due to her going negative and now the only thing people are talking about is Franken's taxes and Rev. Wright and that the scandals are what is swaying the average voter that, quite frankly, we are where we deserve to be if so many Americans are more interested and affected by things that have nothing to do with politics but are lies or things that don't even have to do with politics.

The average American voter should be ashamed of themselves and we, as Americans, should be ashamed of how shallow we are as a nation.

Pathetic is the only word I have to describe it.

SFDoc81   May 2nd, 2008 10:43 am ET

Clearly the nutcase is working for the Republicans. Incorrect Tax information? IN 17 STATES- I worked in 3 states in one year- what a nightmare at tax time!!! I can't even begin to imagine 17 States, and all the paperwork nightmares that would involve- trying to keep each State's tax laws straight. At least Franken ADMITS to an an error, and PAID THE TAXES, then DOES NOT LIE ABOUT IT- i.e. Cunningham, Gingrich, to name a few Republicans. There are sleazy "Dealmakers" on both sides of the isles- but more do seem to be Republicans. I'm an INDEPENDENT, just for that reason. Which is less sleazy? Best wishes for the Minesota voters!!!

Don Fitzgerald   May 2nd, 2008 10:43 am ET

Go, AL,we know all about the Republican, professional bloggers, they like to spew their opposition all over the place. Other bloggers are getting wise to their Lies, misleading statements and false representations!! The key to their strategy is LIES, that is the only way they can succeed, look at the Bush/ Chaney ticket. It has become so bad, that the talk of impeaching them is increasing. At this time, I would not be in favor of that route, even though their neglect of our country's needs has been thoroughly documented. So, Mr Franken, good luck, you can win. The voters see through their LIES!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

Steve   May 2nd, 2008 10:48 am ET

Typical Republican modus operandi. Brodkorb is a Republican party tool. Frankens opponent Coleman is a Bush clone who has done nothing for Minnesota, republicans can not run on issues so its all about sliming Franken. Oh and by the way Franken paid all his taxes, just that his accountant screwed up and paid them to the wrong state

Susan   May 2nd, 2008 10:48 am ET

Good grief, CNN. You're off target with your article. Franken did pay his taxes on time - the taxes were paid to the wrong states, and that's going to be fixed. Balance the hype with some facts - Franken will get refunds from the states he overpaid in, while he's paying what's due in the correct states.

The real issue is that Norm Coleman is a lousy senator, aligning himself with President Bush until the wind blew the other direction. Republicans know Coleman is vulnerable, so they trash his opponent, hoping that voters won't pay attention to the real issues. Anyone care about Iraq, the environment, health care???

Todd C.   May 2nd, 2008 10:49 am ET

For those that don't know - Google Paul vs Clinton and hold on to your shirt with what you read!! L.A., California Case #BC304174

For those of you who think this case has been thrown out – is hasn’t, or is irrelevant – think again:

Jack Jodell, Minneapolis, MN   May 2nd, 2008 10:50 am ET

Typical GOP nonsense and negative campaigning. They'll use any slur they can to win an election (Bush proved that easily in 2004). We here in Minnesota know very well that Coleman is only out for himself. When it was fortuitous to be a Democrat, he was a Democrat. And when it was advantageous to suddenly become a conservative Bush-style Republican, that's what he became. Sure, Franken made a mistake and should have paid his taxes, but unlike Coleman, he'd never vote to give huge tax breaks to billionaires. I don't care if Franken never paid a dime in his whole life—he'll make a far, FAR better Senator than that opportunistic Bush-clone Coleman. Coleman only represents corporations and the Bush money crowd. I want FRANKEN representing ME in the proud tradition of Paul Wellstone, Hubert Humphrey, and Walter Mondale!

Brenda, New York   May 2nd, 2008 10:51 am ET

Army wife and anon, cool it! You both sound like avenging idiot!s The hell with the story of Clinton vs. Paul.

Obama is a creep! He betrayed his pastor, like Joe Andrew and Bill Richardson betrayed Hillary. These three are a pack of rats. Obama is done. He can not be president..He does not have what it takes to be president. Don't you get it. Hillary is tougher and more experience than he is. His speeches are tiring. He talks about the problems but never the solutions. un the hand Hillary talks about both. So get a crip!

Unshrub   May 2nd, 2008 10:51 am ET

THis is where the news is VERY misleading. It's not that he didn't pay his taxes, he paid them all to his home state and not to the state where he earned the income. ANYONE WHO CLAIMS HE DIDN"T PAY HIS TAXES IS EITHER A LIAR OR THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND A THING ABOUT TAXES. He didn't pay less taxes by doing what he did, because he will get a credit for the taxes he pays to other states on his home state.

Joe   May 2nd, 2008 10:51 am ET

This just goes to prove the power of bloggers (people who admittedly have a bias) to shape media coverage.

Steve in Boston   May 2nd, 2008 10:51 am ET

Mr. Franken does not technically "owe" any taxes, he merely paid taxes to the wrong state. His accountant failed to prepare tax returns for states in which Mr. Franken earned income, but rather reported the income as if earned only in Minnesota and New York. Minnesota and New York will have to issue Mr. Franken refunds after he files amended returns to claim credit for taxes paid to the other 17 states. There does not appear to be an issue of morality here. Essentially, this is nothing more than a paperwork snafu - much ado about nothing.

duke   May 2nd, 2008 10:52 am ET

It might be nice if CNN actually understood a story before putting it on the website. Franken didn't "fail to pay" his taxes, he paid them to the wrong states because of a misunderstanding by his accountant. He paid taxes to NY while living there instead of to the states where he earned the income. Nothing nefarious there and he will be credited the money back by NY.

Jim Warren, Decatur GA   May 2nd, 2008 10:56 am ET

Hey Minnesotans:

If you folks elect Al Franken to Congress, we here in Georgia would greatly appreciate it. You see, if elected, then folks will talk about how dumb YOUR state is and give GEORGIA a rest from wearing that crown while our own nut case, Cynthia McKinney, was in office.

Thanks in advance… Go Packers!

Ian Webster   May 2nd, 2008 10:56 am ET

It's funny how most of the people who don't pay their taxes are Republican nutjobs living in the middle of nowhere. You know, that whole "less taxes" bullcrap. Why don't you expose them Brodkorb? Oh, that's right, because you vote for a party, not a person….just like the rest of this stupid country.

Oliver Crocker   May 2nd, 2008 10:56 am ET

They should also take Franken's license to practice comedy away. I heard him once say in an interview that Bill Clinton was just to good a guy to make fun of.

Richard, St. Paul, MN   May 2nd, 2008 10:57 am ET

As a Minnesotan, I'm more concerned with getting rid of Norm Coleman, the GOP lackey. He's been a weak sister when it comes to representing the state and a liar on more occasions than we'd like to acknowledge. At this point, most of us would vote for a rock than give our vote to the Republicans…

Steve C.   May 2nd, 2008 10:58 am ET

Part of the story is that he paid the full amount of taxes on his income in the state he lived in, not where the money was earned.

Now that he has paid the states where the money is earned, he is attempting to recover the money from the state(s) overpaid.

It sounds like this is less of an issue than it is made out to be. Again a sign of Flash and Sizzle over substance.

Let's talk about real issues.

Mary   May 2nd, 2008 11:00 am ET

Typical Democrats, they want to raise taxes on hard working Americans but they don't want to pay them.

sky   May 2nd, 2008 11:02 am ET

The deal with these politicians, whether they be Democrat or Republican is that they behave in a way that we would not allow our children to behave or our co-workers or our neighbors or our bosses or employees. Therre is no place in our regular daily lives where their behavior would be appreciated or tolerated. At some point in time, we as a bi-partisan nation have to let both sides know that we expect them to follow the rules and that we are tired to death of their negative blogger say anything mentality.

John Frohrip   May 2nd, 2008 11:03 am ET

Perhaps it is time to bring up Coleman's failure to report all revenue as St. Paul; Mayor whwn he used City money to "augment" his lifestyle. I don't see Brodkorb speaking out about that. The two-faced nature of Brodkorb may be due to his background as well.

JDC   May 2nd, 2008 11:03 am ET

Franken, like most Dems, likes two sets of rules: one for us and one for them.

Len   May 2nd, 2008 11:03 am ET

Now it will be up to Minnesotans not to elect this scoundrel.

Sooner or later these liberals who pretend to be so honest and decent show their real colors.

You have Spitzer in New York, another hypocritical clown.

It is about time we need to expose these characters for what they really are: demagogues. The Clintons have show their real character: liars, calculating, hypocrites, opportunists.

So, Minnesota be on the alert. Do not elect Al Franken for the U S Senate not even for dog catcher.

DC   May 2nd, 2008 11:04 am ET

What a sniveling little rat. A guy who professes to believe in " "the fundamentals of being a Republican — less government, individual freedom, personal responsibility, strong national defense" should be in haste to clean up the toxic disaster perpetrated by the GOP on its own people during the last six years, and instead he's dumpster-diving to defend it.

Hypocrite.

DoneWithDems   May 2nd, 2008 11:06 am ET

Pathetic liberal!

John - NY   May 2nd, 2008 11:07 am ET

Personally I think the problem Al Franken has with taxes serves to illustrate how ridiculous our tax system is. Do you know how much paperwork is required just for Federal taxes? It takes a full day to fill out those forms - if you are a professional tax accountant. Then you have to report tax earned in each state! So you have to keep track of your calendar for the year and report exactly what you earned based on days in each state even if you are paid one check for work in multiple states! When will the madness stop! Franken should use this to his advantage to illustrate how he would simplify the tax code.

Jo, ATL GA   May 2nd, 2008 11:07 am ET

What a stupid article. The man paid his taxes to the wrong place. what is wrong with that? He reported his income. Talk about something else. CNN get the facts before you post.

Let's ask the blogger when he paid his taxes.

Jim   May 2nd, 2008 11:07 am ET

I don't know much about him, but weren't the taxes paid on time, just to the wrong states?????? If this is the case then this is the exact issue I have with America's biggest enemy (the media). Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story!

APS in Hawaii   May 2nd, 2008 11:08 am ET

Funny how the GOP relies on dirty tactics like this and the news media just fall over the story. This another Swift boat in the making. Why didn't the news media talk about how the GOP squandered six years with Bush to run up the highest deficits and corruption ever. Coleman should explain how he took money from lobbyists and what did he do for Minnesota? It would be nice for once to talk and report the issues instead. The GOP is the most corrupt and money laundering syndicate. They do not care about fixing the nation, only lining their pockets with money. Just ask Jack Abramoff.

Jo, ATL GA   May 2nd, 2008 11:09 am ET

Why all the double post for Obama. Is CNN posting for Obama. Your system does not allow two post from my PC. …. SO CNN you are posting these yourselves.

Al Franken is still the best candidate period.

Umpire   May 2nd, 2008 11:10 am ET

As usual, the bottom-feeders in American politics pick up a minor issue to detract from substantive ones. Coleman wouldn't survive widespread public knowledge of his record in the Senate, so the tax issue was drummed up to divert attention. Why does this situation seem so much like the Clinton-Obama contest!

Darth Vadik, CA   May 2nd, 2008 11:10 am ET

Barry Woods   May 2nd, 2008 11:11 am ET

This is so typical of the alledgedly tolerant, fair and balanced, Neo-Con fascist, Republican stay at homes who complain about everything that the Democrats want to discuss. They can not win by actually discussing issues. They have to talk about half truths, such as Franken's Tax issue ( read the facts) as if he is a criminal. They have to ramble on about someone who supports a candidate as if that is the story and not the the problems of the day.

These people need to look at their food bill, their gasoline expense, their tutition costs and lets not forget healthcare cost doubling every 3 years. After looking at these items, they will say they're better-off rather than admit things are not very good for Americans. A slowdown in the economy by any other name is still a recession.

I don't think Al Franken need me to defend him except the alledgedly tolerant, fair and balanced, Neo-Con fascist, republican stay at homes can't seem to read the facts about an issue and if they do, understand those complicated two-syllable words.

This is a joke, right Mr Franken-stein??

Joe in Pittsburgh   May 2nd, 2008 11:18 am ET

To one of the other posters, I DID research the 16th Amendment and guess what? It allows the government to collect income tax. I'm not quite sure what point you were trying to make. Ask Wesley Snipes how successful he was trying to get out of something that law-abiding Americans pay every year.

I agree this country certainly has bigger problems and this ridiculous bipartisanship is one of the main reasons this country is in the shape it is and it has been this way since Washington left office. Both parties should be ashamed of themselves. I'm sick of the negative ads and smear campaigns.

Voting seems to be a matter of picking the candidate with the least amount of dirty laundry and just hoping that whoever IS elected is able to accomplish something during his or her term.

Ancdidate who was personally involved in Travelgate and attempted to destroy people inthe White House Traqvel Office, someone who hid subpeona'ed documents, and factually shredded many things that would have disbarred her and brought indictments. Who fabricated that she was under fire in Bosnia , and then displayed her usual indignation when confronted with the truth as usual. Or you have a mere pontificator, who lectures us on race, and yet sat under the ministry of a left win, conspiracy lunatic. Obama has no record in area that matters to this country in foreign affairs, ohhh, except for the fact that he lived abroad as a CHILD. One wonders how Obama postures himself as a Christian when he went to the platform of the Illinois Senate and voted that a child of 8 1/2 months in the womb should have no protection. Planned Parenthood has been the leading casue of genoicde particularly in the black community. If Wright and Obama want people to treat them withthe dignity God demands from all of us. The should look at their silence,no rather Obama's advocacy for the mureder of innocent children under his watch.

I can't believe people think this guy is a viable candidate…. he's a joke and the far left nut that always hurts the party.

But it's ok… bacause people like me… they really really do!

LOL…

Put him in jail with Snipes…

Wow … looking at this story AND the comments posted here that aren't even on topic … Republicans are REALLY REACHING for something to bash. They're getting SO desperate that they're attacking someone for realizing a clerical error AND THEN FIXING IT?!? He PAID the taxes people. Get over it. Now that he's paid, you have no reason to gripe about it now. Stop your low-brow, undercutting tactics that is the primary reason people HATE YOUR POLITICS. Stop the hate-mongering. Stop the fear-mongering. Stop the war-mongering. Stop the race to the gutter with your politics. People might actually start to LIKE republicans that way ….

The repbulicans in the Senate are responsible for the continuation of this horrible and ridiculous war, blocking over site of the criminals in the executive branch and protecting the corporate kleptocracy of eco-criminals in charge of the economy and civil society. What do they want to run on? Al Franken's poor chice of an accountant. In a word: Disgusting.

GP   May 2nd, 2008 11:24 am ET

I wonder how many other folks that conduct business in multiple states have tax payment issues.

Sure Franken will pay the various states he owes. And Minnesota will refund him the taxes he overpaid. Seems to me Minnesota was better off before this republican swift boater stirred things up.

The whole matter is little more than rearranging the furniture. No net gain or loss for Franken. California and New York gain, Minnesota looses.

Let's take a look at Norm Colemans personal finances and tax returns.

It's amazing how Solidad and Sanchez do the Obama dance.

The relevency of the MSM is being challenged by the bloggers , left and right. The strength of the mainstream newpapers and TV is falling as well as there share values.

Note the Obama ad expenditures in PA. Not much bang for his bucks.

Integrity in politics still has some value. I could no more dis-own Wright than my own Grandmother .
He has been like a mentor and spiritual adviser to me over Twenty years. That is until it becomes politically expediant to do so. New kind of Politics ?

Same Old -Same Old

Failure to pay income taxes? Please do me a favor and do some research about the so called "16th ammendment." Former IRS employees never pay income taxes for a reason; because you dont' have to pay them EVER.

Good for Al and the 3 million Americans that refuse to pay them every year.

I think Wesley Snipes might disagree with the above statement.

Amused   May 2nd, 2008 11:29 am ET

Apparently Franken did simplify "his" tax code!

This is silly. The man did pay his taxes, but paid them to the wrong entity. It's not fraud or evasion — just a mistake he's trying to straighten out.

The idea is to keep people from addressing the real issues, and it seems to be working.

LisaB   May 2nd, 2008 11:30 am ET

I don't give a crap that Al Franken messed up his taxes (like no one has ever done that) unless he did it intentionally. Brodkorb is the lowest form of political scum who contributes nothing of real value to public discourse. His purpose in life is to be Jerry Springer for the Republican party by distracting people from discussing ideas that will make our country better. Despicable. He knows this will work with some people and that deliberate manipulation makes it even more despicable. I hope he has some kind of catharsis of humility and common decency and courteousy before his children are old enough to be ashamed of him.

The Larry Sinclair thing is nonese, that was just a cash grab attempt by some over the hill looney toon.

It has been publicly discredited. Nice try though.

AND LET THE CLINTON V PAUL THING DROP - WHO CARES! YOU ARE MAKING A FOOL OUT OF YOURSELF AND IT REFLECTS OTHER OBAMA SUPPORTERS BADLY.

Clean Politics - Obama 08

Minnesota Indie Guy   May 2nd, 2008 11:30 am ET

Whoopee…so he or his accountant screwed up on his taxes. Sheesh, I had the same thing happen to me when I worked in five states in two years. It's not easy to figure out, although honestly his accountant is paid to know these things. Still, big deal. Believe me folks, I'm not a Franken supporter but I could care less about this. Show some real issues not this type of stupid stuff. Typical politics…talk about everything that doesn't matter. Where are the issues that matter to middle income familes who are struggling with how to pay for everyday items? Let the blogger talk about that…oh, but wait…tha't not sensational enough. What an idiot.

Matt   May 2nd, 2008 11:31 am ET

Larry Sinclair failed two polygraph tests regarding his accusations of Obama. The man is a liar. Sorry Clinton fans. Better luck next time…

Nick - MN   May 2nd, 2008 11:32 am ET

Franken did not fail to pay his taxes - He paid them to the wrong state (mostly MN). As a speaker, entertainer, etc - he has to pay state taxes in the state the income was earned. If he'd just ignored state taxes altogher then there would be an issue. Theres no issue here - our taxes laws are enormously complex, people make mistakes. There was no attempt to defraud any state. Wonder if the state of MN and NY will refund what he overpaid as quickly as he stepped up to pay the states he owed. By the way, he added in the penalties and interest that all but one state hadn't asked for. Issue Closed.

Rob-OR   May 2nd, 2008 11:33 am ET

It's dopes like Al Franken that gave me significant pause in changing my voter registration from Independent to Democrat this year. Obama, fortunately, was more than enough to make up for it. If Al Franken was running for senate in my state and had even a chance of winning, I'd be looking for jobs at least 2 states away.

Can't wait to vote for Obama! TWICE (May and November)!!!

dick williams   May 2nd, 2008 11:33 am ET

I don't know what Mr. Franken really has to offer Democrats. He is a polarizing figure, as a comedian, which is not an easy task. Like many entertainers, he doesn't have his own house in order, like every good citizen should have. Most annoying of all, he doesn't take responsibility for not paying his taxes but rather balmes his accountant. The only reason for any one to vote for him, he's a Democrat and hates all Republicans. That's going to get him votes, I'm sure, but not enough, I hope.

Miller   May 2nd, 2008 11:35 am ET

ooooouh……So you found something. Big deal. You have any idea how Republican hypocrites there are in congress?

Poor poor Minnesota.

Blame the blogger for Al Franken's tax problem? The DNC pays great money to dig up dirt on Republicans.
