Sen. John McCain has clarified remarks he made Friday in Denver, Colorado, about the Mideast and oil.
Sen. John McCain has clarified remarks he made Friday in Denver, Colorado, about the Mideast and oil.

PHOENIX (AP) — Republican John McCain was forced to clarify his comments Friday suggesting the Iraq war involved U.S. reliance on foreign oil. He said he was talking about the first Gulf War and not the current conflict.

At issue was a comment he made at a town hall-style meeting Friday morning in Denver.

"My friends, I will have an energy policy that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East that will prevent us from having ever to send our young
men and women into conflict again in the Middle East," McCain said.

The expected GOP nominee sought to clarify his comments later, after his campaign plane landed in Phoenix. He said he didn't mean the U.S. went to war in Iraq five years ago over oil.

"No, no, I was talking about that we had fought the Gulf War for several reasons," McCain told reporters. One reason was Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait, he said.

"But also we didn't want him to have control over the oil, and that part of the world is critical to us because of our dependency on foreign oil, and it's more important than any other part of the
world," he said.

"If the word `again' was misconstrued, I want us to remove our dependency on foreign oil for national security reasons, and that's all I mean," McCain said.

"The Congressional Record is very clear: I said we went to war in Iraq because of weapons of mass destruction," he said.

McCain is a staunch supporter of the Iraq war, although he criticizes the early handling of it by the Bush administration. His support for the war has drawn attacks from the Democratic Party, and on Friday, McCain defended himself against television ads that accuse him of advocating a 100-year war in Iraq.

The ads, run by the Democratic National Committee and the liberal group MoveOn.org., tie McCain to President Bush and cite McCain's comments that there could be an American military presence
in Iraq for 100 years.

"One hundred years in Iraq? And you thought no one could be worse than George Bush," an announcer says in the most recent ad, run by MoveOn.org.

McCain brought up the commercials in Denver, saying they are lies. He doesn't deny saying "100 years" in connection with U.S. military operations in Iraq. But he said he was clearly referring
to a possible peacekeeping force and not a centurylong war, as critics imply.

"You have seen an ad campaign that is mounted against me that says I wanted to stay and fight in Iraq and fight for 100 years," McCain told about 300 people at the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community
Center.
"My friends, it's a direct falsification, and I'm sorry that political campaigns have to deteriorate in this fashion," McCain said. "Because there's legitimate differences between myself and
Senator Obama and Senator Clinton on what we should do in Iraq."

The Democratic presidential candidates want to set a date for withdrawal from Iraq, which McCain argues would lead to chaos and genocide in the Middle East.

"After we win the war in Iraq, and we are succeeding — and it's long and hard and tough, with enormous sacrifices — then I'm talking about a security arrangement that may or may not be the
same kind of thing we had with Korea after the Korean war was over," he said.

At issue is McCain's answer, in January, to a question about Bush's theory that troops could be in Iraq for 50 years.

McCain said: "Maybe 100. As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed, that'd be fine with me, and I hope it would be fine with you, if we maintain a presence in a
very volatile part of the world where al-Qaida is training, recruiting, equipping and motivating people every single day."

Obama has taken over a million dollars in donations from sub-prime lenders. Citigroup,Washington Mutual,Countrywide,Credit Suisse, Centex and Goldman Sachs. He is beholden to them and their tatics. He talks out of both sides of his mouth. He is a typical politician who will say what he thinks you want to hear. Rev. Wright said it all, Obama is a politician who says what a politician needs to say to win."

Kevin   May 3rd, 2008 10:30 am ET

Right McCain.

Problem is, everyone now views the WMD claim as a smoke&mirror for the real cause for war: OIL

mozartt   May 3rd, 2008 10:36 am ET

I certainly hope that CNN runs this particular faux paux 50x. Is it possible that someone who is running to be President of the United States actually said (and he did because I was watching) that the US went to war because of oil. If you follow this stupidy through, the US invaded a country for oil, spent trillionsof dollars in that war, almost decimated the economy and now gasoline is how much? $4,00 a gallon!! Clearly that was excellent judgement. John McCain is scary!

Latest news - OOPS! he made a mistake - he was talking about some other war; he gets confused, so perhaps he meant the Boar War, he was in it wasn't he??

independent   May 3rd, 2008 10:37 am ET

you want to know why the republicans are backing hillary is because they know her well. let me tell you what the republicans will use to defeat her
1- bosnia lies
2- vote for the war in iraq
3-nafta mess
4-comlombia trade
5- she stated that she won't redraw troops in iraq because going for president
6- credit card bill
7-hillary credibility

Sharon   May 3rd, 2008 10:37 am ET

Mccain is not telling us anything we don't already know. We went to war in Iraq for the oil, and he will continue the old bush politics to stay there until we take the country over. Do we want this man in the White House with his finger on the button???? He won't remember what it was that he pushed the button for.

David   May 3rd, 2008 10:37 am ET

Is this man McCain dreaming?

Maybe he should start thinking about the reality.

McCain, can you give and answer to this question, how long do you think our soldier should stay in Iraq in reality not in dream world?

David, Paducah, Kentucky   May 3rd, 2008 10:38 am ET

McCain is getting senile! This guy is untrustworthy and has no business being President.

enough dabate   May 3rd, 2008 10:38 am ET

now we know the reason for Iraq war.

Charlotte you are such a liar! Those donations were from small donors who work for those companies. Wow you're just like the candidate you represent.

Charlotte   May 3rd, 2008 10:39 am ET

We know for a fact the USA has never benifited from the invasion of Iraq, not then and certainly not now. Where is the oil money Iraq is raking in going? It is about time they took care of themselves. We are responsible for the destruction of this country, we are not responsible for their inability to form a government that works. We can't even fix our own…

Mark Billingsley, Sacramento, Calif.   May 3rd, 2008 10:40 am ET

This has just two comments? TWO? Hillary wants to obliterate Iran, using language that reveals her as irresponsible and naive (no president in the past 50 years has ever advocated publicly to obliterate another country) and it gets swept under the rug. McCain admits, despite any backpedaling, that we are in Iraq because of oil, and not much traction in the media. But if Obama gets asked another Rev. Wright question the Internets light up. Un-freakin-believable.

What Really Happend   May 3rd, 2008 10:41 am ET

Because McCain is so old he forgot that the American people was told that we were going to war about WMDs instead Oil. Now he is trying to cover up the truth when he knows the real reason we went to war was about oil which he clearly stated.

Everybody in the world knows that he was not referring to the Gulf War!

Thanks McSame!

Charltte, Do you have any proof ? If not could you please not make such false statement. People are fed up of these baseless lies.

Thanks

mitch from ark.   May 3rd, 2008 10:41 am ET

mccain went on to say 'we went to war for wmds',not oil.this was the biggest lie of all!the only chemical weapons found were sold to iraq ,by the us.they were 30 -50 years old.next,he'll say we're fighting terrorists in iraq.the terrorist's didn't arrive until after the 'occupation' began.4050+ dead americans and tens of thousands of iraqi deaths, and our gov. is responsible for it.those who authorized this war are just as guilty as the administration that waged it,and all of them should be jailed for misleading the american people into supporting it.

james fort Lauderdale   May 3rd, 2008 10:44 am ET

TO Charlotte, what this aricle has to do with OBAMA?
The article is not even about donations, it's about war and its reasons.
So sad, you're pathetic just wanna talk bad about OBAMA no matter what the topic is.

To Mr. Charlotte Uniformed, so to break it to you but Mc Same offers us nothing but another 4000 casulaties for oil,,,, Ya, good luck with that.

Erik B   May 3rd, 2008 10:45 am ET

I don't believe him. and as a militray member it sickens me to hear this comming from another military Member, and a former POW at that.

I would rather fight against terror, and find those responsible for 911, I dont want to fight over Oil, a battle that we seem to be loosing right now

I think he said what he meant the first time, the golf war wasn't even the topic, he knows that we are fighting to fill the pockets of the Big Oil Companies.

I'm so pissed at his comments I don't know what to do.

Fazio   May 3rd, 2008 10:46 am ET

His effort to quickly clarify his statement made him not only look foolish, but the REAL reason for Bush's unlawful war so apparent. Oil. Blood for oil, folk. USA went there so Exxon-Mobile and Texaco could have prime digging rights.

If McCain gets elected, it will be another 4 years of George W Bush policies but under a new name.

God help us. W has done enough damage to America, and the rest of the world. We can not stand by and let this damage continue.

Hillary - drop out now so the Democratic party may be unified - you've done enough damage already.

What does this article have to do about Obama? I'm glad the truth finally slipped out from McCain. He knows better than anyone what this war was about. We keep Musharif in power in Pakistan yet we get rid of Saddam Hussain. We ignore Kim Jong Ill in North Korea who HAS WMDs, yet we get saddam hussain for "thinking" of having WMDs. People need to realize that the US gets in conflicts in regions of political interest. The couldn't care less about the rest of the world. That is the government that represents us.

Call me overly sensitive, but, I just don't take kindly to people calling me stupid. McCain's willingness to trade American lives for oil is a moral failure significant enough as to disqualify him to be the leader of the free world.

McCain has gone and done it.. he let the cat out of the bag… he "misspoke" and told the truth. Now he wants to take the truth back. Oh well, most folks are uninformed enough and uninvolved enough to allow this "misspeak" of the truth to go unnoticed… GOP wins again.

Me   May 3rd, 2008 11:01 am ET

He spoke the truth…this war will not be over until we gain control of the oil…which is why they will not define what winning is in Iraq. the sad thing is that the Iraqis will never allow us to take ontrol of their oil. Now I hope Obama wins because I think Clinton deep down understands the real reason we are in Iraq and supports it.

Jan from Boca Raton   May 3rd, 2008 11:01 am ET

One more reason we need to elect Hillary Clinton.

McCain is too old, he can't remember what he says from one minute to another.

McCain has gotten a free ride up to now. He is outside of the radar, yet, virtually every time he opens his mouth he misspeaks or seems to get confused. I hope he gets a more critical view from the media and voters going forward.
And, yes, Charlotte, those donations to Obama are from individual doners who are tabulated by the company they work for (and industry) once their donations are $200. Your accusation is false and misleading. If I make a donation it is listed by the company I work for and the industry I work in.

Charlotte i guess you just wokeup from whatever you were in. The truth hurt people lives are at stake in this election and you are out there spreading false rumour about Obama!
The topic is about war that we ought not to fight and now after over 4,000.00 lives were lost the truth is coming out . Maccain and Hillary who voted to asking Bush to use any force against Iraq regarding WMB, eventhough there was evidence to the contrary. No WMB in Iraq , but most senator including Hillary failed to ready the fine print.

Now Maccain is saying that the war was for oil. Shame on politician who voted to authorised the war.

What a surprise! Can you imagine that John Mcbush would actually admit that we are spilling the blood of our youth in Iraq is for the sake of feeding the coffers of Big Oil. That's is more than a mere Freudian slip.

Just as sure as the sun rises the corporate media will sweep this gaffe under the short term memory of a news cycle and the country will continue to be run on historical amnesia and platitudes about saving the world for democracy. After all we have to get back to the important issues like who has the most prominent flag pin.

By the way I heard a rumor that a prominent black politician ( I won't use his name) was seen in an Indonesian airport in 1992 when the fourth cousin twice removed of Osama Bin Laden landed on the tarmak. He also was so conspiratorial that he hides the horror of his unmentionable middle name. Joe McCarthy, where are you when we need a true sense of fairness?

Can someone clarify the reamrks of Pastor Hagee with his anti-Catholic remarks. It is amazing to me that someone who also teaches a false gospel can attack Catholics with this kind of bigotry.

Hagee is part of the false teachings that are heard all over the world these days. This is a secular nation and we shouldn't be so concerned about all this talk of prayer in the school and having the Ten Commandents in the court houses.
Hagee must repent !!

OMG! why is this not in the cover of every newspaper! or on every news network. A Republican finally admits that we sent our sons, and daughter to war over oil, yet! gas prices are higher that ever! Notice how this is not making major new, but Rev. Wright is worth covering… yeah right. I could care less about what Wright has to say he does not pay my bills nor buy my groceries. The only candidate that is about some serious truth in washington and is for the people in America is OBAMA. Hillary Clinton and John McCain with all their so call experience is about politics as ususal, Politics as usual tells us we can rescue the big giant companies (BEAR STEARNS) with billions of dollars but only save the average family $26 to $30 for the summer with this tax holiday gimmick! Hillary and John needs to give the American people more credit than that we are a lot smarter that they think. I can't even do some serious grocery shopping with $26 to $30. When we take a look at hour economy we can't afford politics as usual. TIME FOR CHANGE… YES WE CAN!

It amazes me that a leader in the Senate and a Presidential hopeful can state that we went to war for oil (no matter which war) and it not be a major news story. If we can spend 24 -hour coverage on Obama's pastor we can at least address issues directly affecting our nations security and policy.

Mac is right. Gulf War #1 was about oil. But Gulf War #2 was about establishing Permanent Military Bases in the Mid East after the Saudis' asked us to leave because of fear of domestic trouble from el Quida sympathizers. This sounds more like protecting an Imperial Nations interest rather than spreading Democracy. That's the way it looks to the rest of the World, whose opinion does matter, despite Karen Hughes' attempt as Propaganda Minister.

McCain made his speech in Colorado and after landing in Arizona he attempts to clarify what he said. Just imagine McCain as president talking to foreign diplomats in another country, returning to the U.S. to find something he said has caused another war. He is a liar to get vote, Hillary is a liar to get votes. How can anybody not see through the lies of these politians and stop giving them their votes. If any one of these politians, Clinton or McCain get in office, watch what happens. No is going to happen. Just as in New York she did nothing she said she was going to do.

Douglas McTague   May 3rd, 2008 11:38 am ET

What is hilariously sad is that a Horse Race will beat this critical news piece for at least the next few days….if this McCain comment even lives to see this afternoon. Heaven forbid a horse breaks a leg and makes a melodramatic struggle for rehabilitation and survival…..then CNN and the rest will be covering that news story like flies on manure. Moreover, we always have more important stories to cover instead of connection the two words Oil and Iraq, such as teachers being banned for posing in a bikini and "sexting" pics on cell phones, whatever that is.

JJ Sacramento   May 3rd, 2008 11:39 am ET

McCain, you are right we did go to war for oil. For once you are telling the truth.

Nick - Arlington, VA   May 3rd, 2008 11:40 am ET

yea McCain…because when you talk about a middle east war we all know your actually talking about the war 17 years ago and not the one going on now that we were told would be paid with oil AND lower prices at home which equals an energy policy….As a democrat and Obama supporter I always liked McCain, but lately he is falling in line with Bush and the neo-cons so much that the distinction is clear. I will only be happy with a democrat in the White House.

Christian, Tampa FL   May 3rd, 2008 11:41 am ET

That's ridiculous. The first gulf war is far less controversial, and was fought under UN auspices after an intentionally hostile move from Saddam Hussein. The second Iraq War was started for no good reason and has only diminished American security and regional stability.

McCain seems kind of weird on this.

mollygonz   May 3rd, 2008 11:41 am ET

McCain flubbed and now he's trying to cover it up. Imagine if Obama had done that..atleast he would've taken accountability which is alot more than what the other two candidates have shown. He is just ridiculous…he can't even get his story straight and appears confused. Is this someone that we want running our country?? Please!!

carrie   May 3rd, 2008 11:42 am ET

charlotte why are u so uneucated?
what does this have to do with obama?
i really wany u to vanish or jump off a cliff

Liroudiane   May 3rd, 2008 11:46 am ET

Have Rev. Jerry M. Wright made the same statement as McAin did, there would be a barrage of criticism. McAin is making two many mistatement since this campaign began. Is it the age? Does his jugdement on foreign policy reliable? Between McAin saying he will continue the war in Iraq and Hilary saying that she would obliterate Iran, voters know now who is the most dangerous to elect in November. Americans please STOP being misled by these two warmongers! Obama for sure will restore U.S. credibility abroad!

ChristiB   May 3rd, 2008 11:47 am ET

MY GOD!!!!!!! THOUSANDS OF LIVES, 4,100 American troops - 200,000 Iraqi civilians - SUFFERING OF MILLIONS!

FOR OUR GREED!!!!!!

ABC news has the full clip - McCAIN was talking about opposing IRAQ withdrawl timetables - and then he went directly into the energy policy quote.

McCAIN IS A LIAR~!!!!!!!!! He wasn't talking about the GULF - watch the clip.

renea   May 3rd, 2008 11:49 am ET

MCCAIN IS HAVING TO MANY SENIOR MOMENTS FOR ME!

DOH!   May 3rd, 2008 11:49 am ET

oops! He did it again! I guess he needs to carry a Leiberman with him wherever he goes………

Ziggy   May 3rd, 2008 11:51 am ET

Maybe McCain mispoke but according to Freud, it simply refflects what he deeply think, that is: We went to war for the oil. It is true and simple as that. Since we did not win the war and oil is getting more expensive for us, we should simply get out of there before it's too late. This has been a bad business venture. And I thought our President Bush was a an MBA graduate.

Joe Reg   May 3rd, 2008 11:52 am ET

Now we know the reason for the invasions!!!

Who else got OIL in the areas again!!! Ha!!! Saudi Arabia # 1 and Iran # 2.

Are they on the list for another oil war?

Rebecca   May 3rd, 2008 11:53 am ET

CNN….where is your report on Clinton's NY senator campaign fraud? You sure were and still are able to beat the entire Rev. Wright story to death but you don't report any of Clinton's scandal and controversies that are sure to come in the general election. Oh yeah, what about the fact that she committed fraud and illegal cover up while trying to get Nixon impeached? Where is that story? Where are any stories of the Clinton's scandals and controversies. Just because you covered them during Bill's term doesn't mean they shouldn't be covered now. This is a NEW race. Everything should be covered just like you are doing with Obama.

kevin from alaska   May 3rd, 2008 11:56 am ET

Anyone that can open their eyes and look at the conflict in Iraq will realize it's about one thing: American Imperialism. And yes, that includes oil.

I believe we live in a Democratic Republic. John McCain evidently thinks that we live in an Empire.

Tawanda Bell   May 3rd, 2008 11:58 am ET

You know people like Charlotte is what America is tired of. I'm sure she is a Hillary supporter. If you notice the spirit of those who support Hillary. Its the spirit of Hillary. You see that they are mad and scared that they thought that this was going to be easy. Read a book called the Great Controversy. It is so real that it is scary

Sue, NY   May 3rd, 2008 11:58 am ET

One more way the media controls everything….I just sent a blog and it didn't get posted.

RB   May 3rd, 2008 12:00 pm ET

There you go McSame. Now we know that you think it's perfectly fine to have kids give their life for oil, but you won't support a lousy $2B plan to provide education benefits for those who are lucky enough to make it home! As commander in chief, it is an inherent responsibility of leadership to take care of your warriors. I guess you've forgotten that along the way.

Dems2008   May 3rd, 2008 12:00 pm ET

I don't believe you. CNN… do you believe him? Please keep talking about this for a day or so. That's only fair.

Dems2008   May 3rd, 2008 12:00 pm ET

I don't believe you.

Does anyone else believe him?

Dems2008   May 3rd, 2008 12:01 pm ET

…and it looks like w didn't even get the oil… this time or last time.

M.S.   May 3rd, 2008 12:02 pm ET

I hope American's are very aware of the fact that if McCain wins the election, the same people who run the government now will continue to be in charge of the government of this country. There would be no change in January, 2009. Only George W. Bush will be gone (sort of). I say "sort of" because his staff will still be running the government.

What a depressing thought to go through all this just to have the same old sorry crowd running this government.

Nunya   May 3rd, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Fact: If there weren't so much oil in the area, we wouldn't care one bit about any of the tin-pot dictators who ruled there.

So oil may not be the primary reason we sent troops there, but it is undeniably a significant part of why we are there.

As for the 100 years comment, having heard the clip with his actual words, it indeed is the case that he phrased it in terms of a peaceful situation where active fighting wasn't ongoing. So forget about the quibbles over distorting his words and stick to what he actually said. Anyone who thinks the situation in Iraq is going to settle down to such a peaceful situation just isn't paying attention…

kevin from alaska   May 3rd, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Haliburton was given a $2.5 billion no-bid contract by Bush to guard Iraq's oil after the invasion of Baghdad. That's the same oil that disappeared because "insurgents" stole it. Yeah right. Cheney stole the 2000 election in Florida and the 2004 election in Ohio and he stole the Iraqi's oil at the expense of the American tax payer. IMPEACH!

W PA   May 3rd, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Any one with an some intelligence would know that OIL was the reason for war when it first started. Read all the litterature before the war regarding Cheney, Wolfowitz, Pearl, Rumsfeld, Bush and others who wanted to dominate the Middle East just for that reason. You can't depend on the media to ever tell the truth, they go with who ever is in power or from who ever they can benefit the best, the heck with the American people and the heck with truth…The Iraq war was never about Iraqi people or even terrorists, it was about regime change to obtain the right to their oil, which is one of the largest claims in the world. But who am I, a nobody who does not count like so many of us…this great country has gone to pot because of Bush and his weasels.

Dems2008   May 3rd, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Charlotte… where do you get your information from? Why can't you just be FOR your candidate and NOT AGAINST someone else's. This is the crap most of us are tired of. SO negative, so vitrial, so toxic. Tell me…who exactly are you helping with that diet tribe?

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia in CA   May 3rd, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Mr. McCan't::

B A L O N E Y!!!!!!!

Obama 08   May 3rd, 2008 12:08 pm ET

These "misspeaks" by McCain are exactly why the Democrats have to decide on a candidate…Imagine what could be done with all the statements he has made.

LT for Obama   May 3rd, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Wow. So he wants to be president so he can misspeak all the time and have to correct himself on issues as vitally important as to why we went to war? As for his explanation, I don't care which war it was, I don't accept that as a reason for going to war with another country instead of finding alternatives to foreign resources.

Craig   May 3rd, 2008 12:18 pm ET

Charlotte:

Clinton says what a politician needs to say too (i.e. gas tax, sniper fire, NAFTA)! I can go on and on!

BillieJean in Idaho   May 3rd, 2008 12:19 pm ET

My son is on his way to Iraq for the second time and it is all about oil. Tell his wife and four kids that.

Makes you want to jump up and slap somebody.

Nando, Florida   May 3rd, 2008 12:21 pm ET

WE GOT TO GET THAT OIL !!!!! OHHH OHHH I MEAN FIGHT THE INSURGENTS AND WMD!!!!!

IDIOT!!!!

Donald from SC   May 3rd, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Senator John Mc Cain knows that HE sent our young men and women to their deaths in Iraq to protect our future interest (stake) in oil within that region. He knows that the simple answer is to invest in a fundamental change in the American economic structure from its high depency of fossil fuels to other means. This approach will cost his buddies billions in profit. These are his true friends. He does not care about the average American citizen. If he did, he would not flip-flop as he has been doing. Why don't we take our que from the Republican Party that refuses to support him. If his own political family doesn't believe in him why should we?

NOT YET COMMITED   May 3rd, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Indeed, only Hillary is capable of beating this man in the election. Because Obama will not only beat him Obama will cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuush him. He wont see even one vote if he contests with Obama.

McSame as usual   May 3rd, 2008 12:27 pm ET

Oops, he slipped on that one. People should be outraged at his comment. Of course this will be pushed aside so we can focus on real American problems, such as Rev. Wright.

mitch from ark.   May 3rd, 2008 12:28 pm ET

Griff   May 3rd, 2008 12:30 pm ET

Your're going to win the Kentucky Derby.. 'Colonel John' McCain. Then the Election in November…

Steve   May 3rd, 2008 12:33 pm ET

There is 10 times are much oil in Canada as in the entire Middle
East.
Maybe the reason Republican party is backing away from McCain is the 10,000 articles on the internet titled songbird McCain .

Delaware   May 3rd, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Tax gas holiday is political manupilation for us to say that they did something when they did not really do anything. They just mask the problem to get vote and after election, here is the same problem again. It may come back even worst. How are we going to fix our bridges America? Do we want the same thing that happen in minnesota to happen again? We need to have money in the highway fun program and we also need energy dependence.

kelly WI   May 3rd, 2008 12:35 pm ET

Oil is the fuel of our economy. Without it we would have nothing.
We better protect it and the tree huggers better let us drill our own.
Hillary and Ob want to let Iran take over Iraq. When that happens you can do your whining about oil prices.
McCain 08

Joe Reg   May 3rd, 2008 12:36 pm ET

The oil companies can't more happy when they have the republicains in the White House.

The have free rein in the market place and the keep driving the price of oil up and up with impunity.

Their profit margin can be 150%, 200% and now we their profit margin is more than 500% and they still want more.

Stand up America and support Obama to stop this madness. It is really up to you America. Change is coming to America!!!

Barbara   May 3rd, 2008 12:37 pm ET

i dont understand why cnn will not post my comment does it mean that i say that we need to be united instead of divided I believe that they think the longer we are divided the better it is for their candidate Hillary Clinton to win

K   May 3rd, 2008 12:38 pm ET

This article is about McCain yet Obama people attack Hillary. Nuts. Good job unifying the party Obamaniacs. You can't win without Hillary's base that you enjoy insulting day after day. You're going to lose in November and look like fools.

Faith - Mobile   May 3rd, 2008 12:39 pm ET

I'm sure the this network as well as all of the others and Hillary will find a way to justify her (Hillary's) partners statement! I just don't understand her supporters…When Rev. Wright made these statements the media as well as Hillary's camp and supporters spun it out of control. You all are simply simple…Simple in mind thought and deeds. Hillary is out for herself. The republicans know it and all of the networks know it. Why can't her supporters see it…Admit it…And move on. Let support OBAMA…Real change for real people. The people of America!

Charles   May 3rd, 2008 12:53 pm ET

This is the problem with being a politician some times. I'm sure he probably did mean the first Gulf War, though that doesn't really make it better. But when you say something it will almost always be taken out of context if there's an avenue to take. McCain is not a stupid man so I am able to see what he really meant. However, he now see how it felt when Obama's "bitter" statement was taken out of context and smashed against his head non stop. I'd give an example of Hillary's statements being taken out of context but, well, they're generally just outright lies that are plain as day to see.

Intelligent In CA For Obama   May 3rd, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Crazy is all I can say about this ignorant man. The McCain's are even more disfunctional than the Clinton's if that is possible. This man if elected will get us ALL KILLED. While I will not take anything away from his service to this country-make no mistake people he is not presidential material.

Dems2008   May 3rd, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Let's get it right…I am not a HATER!!
I love this country.
I have served this country.
I believe in free speech.
Nothing about speaking your mind is Anti - American!! That's the most stupid and anti-American statement you can make. If you don't like the Constitution and all it represents, go somewhere, anywhere else. PLEASE!!!

Brian, Pittsbrugh   May 3rd, 2008 1:07 pm ET

Obama DOES NOT take money from federal lobbyists. He takes money from individuals (like me), and anyone that donates money to a political campaign has to list what company they work for. Some supporters might work for oil companies/telecomm companies, or whatever, but that doesn't mean he's taking money from the companies or their lobbyists.

McCain and Clinton BOTH take money from fedeal lobbyists. They've never denied that. They don't plan on changing that. They even have lobbyists running their campaigns. Do your research. And stop liars from saying Obama is just as corrupt as the others. He's CLEARLY DIFFERENT. Vote for change.
