Clinton: I'm not listening to economists on gas tax holiday

Clinton continues to push for a gas tax holiday.
Clinton continues to push for a gas tax holiday.

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (CNN) - In the face of criticism from a slate of economists who say her gas tax holiday plan would be ineffective or even harmful, Hillary Clinton said she wasn’t taking stock of their opinions and emphasized that this was a short-term fix that would primarily benefit long-distance drivers.

“I’m not going to put my lot in with economists,” Clinton told George Stephanopolous on ABC’s ‘This Week’ after he asked her to name a single economist supporting her plan. “If we actually did it right, if we had a president who used all the tools of the presidency, we would design it in such a way that it would be implemented effectively.”

Clinton said she didn’t understand the resistance her plan is getting since its intention is to provide relief.

“On so many of these issues where costs have gone up, where people are really feeling squeezed, there just doesn’t seem to be an understanding about what people go through,” Clinton told Stephanopolous.

The debate over Clinton and McCain’s different pieces of legislation to remove the gas tax this summer reached a fever pitch this week with Barack Obama leading the charge to reject it, saying Saturday, “This is what passes for leadership in Washington – phony ideas, calculated to win elections instead of actually solving problems.”

“It’s a misnomer to say this is all that I’m doing,” Clinton defended herself, “I have a comprehensive long-term energy plan that would go right at dependence on foreign oil.”

Clinton has been arguing that it’s not only about the money saved but the message it sends. “I really believe we’ve got to start right now, demonstrating a willingness to take on these oil companies,” she argued to Stephanopolous.

That is why her campagne has so many Financial problems she do not know how to run it, and this is a prime example of a person who will follow in George Bush foot steps.

Excellent, she won't listen to economists but she wants to lead the country? What an arrogant elitist hack.

I am with Hillary on this (would I be anything but??). We need some relief and though this isn't a permanent solution, it will give us all a break from the high prices.

What Georgie boy needs to be wondering about is why the oil companies and executives are making record profits and

When does Clinton listen to anyone? She's a loose cannon, and irresponsible in her knee jerk reactions to just about everything. She runs through like a bull in a china shop oblivious to the ripple affect of her inability to see beyond getting what "she" not the American people want and need out of her actions. She has a goal and that is the White House, she will stop at nothing to reach her goal. Make no mistake your either with her or against her, and if your against her she will make you pay – since that seems to be half the population we can barely imagine the nightmare that she will drag with her to the White House if she succeeds in her slanderous wrongful attacks. The gas tax issue she send up the red flag, she doesn't care that the long reaching affect will be that the gas companies will raise the price on Americans, that there are road workers that depend on the income over the summer that will be out of jobs, that the true savings will not be for the American people that so desperately need it – no, she wants to "appear" to care about you. She digs deep and speaks down to Americans, the uneducated the poor, the frightened and she tells you she will help. We must stop reacting to her fear mongering and political pandering. She is on the side of McCain, see it for what it is. She will not make change is the the one the Republicans want to run against – what does that tell you?

  8. Unbelievable

If she had an economist to back her, believe me she would have spewed his or her name out. Point is she doesn't. Hillary's tall tales have all the value of a wooden nickel. The gas tax funds highway infrastructure. I hate taxes as much as the next person, but this one is actually a necessity. What good is a crumbling highway for long distance travellers? That's like putting a band-aid on a gun shot wound. Get real. It's a gimmick.

I find it amusing that Mrs. Clinton thinks her gas plan would actually provide some measure of relief to working folks like me. Could I use an extra $30 this summer? Sure, but I could also save my family $30 by dining out one less night and sitting around the table with my wife and kids... which is something we all need to do more of anyway.

The gas tax is nothing but fluff and political pandering. What is much more critical is the sleazy conspiracy between the Clintons,Rev. Wright and the news media. I have listened to the Rev. Wright speech that sparked this manufactured controversy. Guess what I heard. The Rev. Wright gushes with love for the Clintons. Don't believe it? Listen to the speech. Rrev. Wright Loves the Clintons! The speech never mentions Obama once. Rev. Wright was a confidant of the Clintons during the Bill Presidency and he still loves and supports them This whole Rev. Wright contoversy is a plot by the Clintons,Wright and the media to discredit Obama. If the truth comes out. Rev. Wright would become a Clinton controversy as it indeed should be.

Ya right Hillary. What a cheap pandering. This is just why I abhore politicians and especially the so called Democrats.
Tell enough big lies and soon the ignorant will begin to believe and doubt common sense. Already, the media especially, CNN & ABC are in on this. You may win, but in the end we all lose because a lie will always be a lie.

Bush didn't listen to experts either. Need I say more?

A true leader never tries to go it alone. A true leader consults, especially with those who have expertise with a subject or situation.

It should be clear to rational thinking and prudent voters that HRC is not the sort of leader that will serve this country well in the long-term.

Maybe she should listen to the experts. But of course the economists are not running for office. McClinton is. She can say what she wants to her supporter Stephanopoulos I believe the economists.

  16. The Truth

Hillary has a plan, a solution. So what happens, the crowd is negative. Give me a break. She is trying her best to help us cope with the high gas prices. If Bush would do something we wouldn't have the high gas prices. What does Obama say? Negative negative and more of the same negativism. For a real change, let's send him home to his momma.

So cast your vote and wait to see if your conditions changes for the better or if it gets worse .You have been duly warned. If she can do so much ,why the hell are we in the shape that we are?She is a Senator and from New York. Why has`nt the issues been pushed by her Before? Oh, I remember ..they failed.

George W. Bush doesn't listen to the experts of his advisers either. He leads with his GUT! That's why 81% of the American people don't like where this country is headed.

Are we sure that Hillary won't be Bush's third term?

  19. Despise the Lies

Geeez.... sounds EXACTLY like George Bush. HRC thinks she can just toss a meatless bone to us "little people" while she goes on Fox News to tell O'reilly what she really thinks. "God bless us rich people...."

This "little person" will never vote for HRC.

  20. Sick and Tired

People are so dumb....why would we want a TEMPORARY break when what we need is a PERMANENT solution. If the economists are saying the gas task "holiday" makes no sense, who am I gonna believe? HRC who has problems REMEMBERING being shot at in Bosnia or Barack Obama and statistical people who work with this stuff all of the time.

So if she could not do it until she is President then why is she talking like it will happen this summer. Just more of the same cheap political tricks, she needs to be stop from the continued damage to the country she is trying to do for her own ego.

This is absurd. Such blatant and undisguised disregard for the opinions of experts is what has gotten us into so much trouble during the current administration. I support Obama, but even I am surprised that she would behave this way.
Take stock of this Clinton supporters.
