Clinton: I'm not listening to economists on gas tax holiday

Clinton continues to push for a gas tax holiday.
Clinton continues to push for a gas tax holiday.

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (CNN) - In the face of criticism from a slate of economists who say her gas tax holiday plan would be ineffective or even harmful, Hillary Clinton said she wasn’t taking stock of their opinions and emphasized that this was a short-term fix that would primarily benefit long-distance drivers.

“I’m not going to put my lot in with economists,” Clinton told George Stephanopolous on ABC’s ‘This Week’ after he asked her to name a single economist supporting her plan. “If we actually did it right, if we had a president who used all the tools of the presidency, we would design it in such a way that it would be implemented effectively.”

Clinton said she didn’t understand the resistance her plan is getting since its intention is to provide relief.

“On so many of these issues where costs have gone up, where people are really feeling squeezed, there just doesn’t seem to be an understanding about what people go through,” Clinton told Stephanopolous.

The debate over Clinton and McCain’s different pieces of legislation to remove the gas tax this summer reached a fever pitch this week with Barack Obama leading the charge to reject it, saying Saturday, “This is what passes for leadership in Washington – phony ideas, calculated to win elections instead of actually solving problems.”

“It’s a misnomer to say this is all that I’m doing,” Clinton defended herself, “I have a comprehensive long-term energy plan that would go right at dependence on foreign oil.”

Clinton has been arguing that it’s not only about the money saved but the message it sends. “I really believe we’ve got to start right now, demonstrating a willingness to take on these oil companies,” she argued to Stephanopolous.

Jimminy. What is she talking about. How is cutting the gas tax going after the oil companies? She is doing nothing but reallocating resources which is helping no one. The tax will be made up somewhere so save your rebate checks folks. People are struggling because of bad economic policy that has weakend our dollar. Enough of playing these rob peter to pay paul games to win votes and approval. I wish Bill Gates were running for President.

I guess she is the "decider" just like Bush. It does not matter what makes sense in the long haul. What matters is...anything for votes. This is scary to me.

Give it up Hillary, she'll say anything to get elected at this moment. She has come up with yet another bad idea that sounds good on the surface, but will benefit no one in the long run. I challange her to come up with one benefical plan and maybe she'd be the front runner as she hoped to be. A little known Senator from Illinos is going to take her reserved seat in the oval office and there is nothing that she can say or do about it. The american people have spoken. Her ride is coming to an end and it's time to exit.

So that's who many of you want for your President???..Hillary Clinton.
She can tell y'all any thing....Take your $28 savings from your Gas Tax Holiday and go buy a brain and think for yourself.

Pandering and saving me basically nothing does not constitute a plan. Gas rose twenty four cents last week alone. Thanks for the 18 cents hillary, you have my vote now....now will you be quiet?

I wish someone could explain why anyone would vote for Hillary Clinton for anything. According to the polls very few people think she is truthfull or trustworthy. If her lie about being shot at by snippers wasn't enough for people to stop voting for her, this latest stunt concerning the cost of gas, certainly should be the proof that she isn't capable of telling the truth anymore than Bush is. I don't know why anyone wants to put someone in the white house that has told one whooper after another. The fact that she is even a canidate is troubling enough, but the fact that people think having another person is charge of our country that has told lie after lie during her campaign is really scary.

Not listening to the economic experts! Gee, that sounds an awful lot like president Bush – not listening to experts. I thought you were smarter than that, Hillary.

THIS IS AN EXAMPLE VIEWING OF WHAT KIND OF PRESIDENT SHE WILL BE. NOT WILLING TO LISTEN OR REASON WITH ANY ONE.

Bush did not listen to the call against war; Bush does not listen to polls...see where the country is today. Hillary, your gimmicks will come back to hunt you. You are preying on people's innocence and education. May you have your reward.

Being Commander In Chief, you have to take facts from different sources and make the correct decision. If it turns out that you made a wrong decision, you should be strong enough to say you made a mistake.

Being Commander In Pandering (CIP), you say whatever it takes to get the people ryled up so that you can get their votes. After experts tell you it won't work, a CIP will tell you, “I’m not going to put my lot in with economists” . A CIP (ego) is not strong enough to say my gas relief won't work. A CIP needs votes... a gimmick!

Personally, I would like roads to be repaired and keep people working than save $3o over the summer. Think about it!

Anyhoo, what I didn't finish before hitting send is that, Georgie Boy should be asking the oil companies why they have record profits and why the executives are making record incomes and bonuses and we are all suffering at the gas pumps, instead of grilling Hillary because she wants to do something to give us all a break at the gas pumps. Come on, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know something is askew here when the oil companies are making so much money and they are doing nothing or very little to create or explore other fuel sources with those profits. It is going straight into their pockets.

    HILLARY ROCKS.

Hillary SHUT UP! you know you are wrong and know that Obama is right. Put away yo enlarge ego for a min and finally admit it is a bad idea. Jesus. I don't want to drive on bad roads or have another bridge disaster because you want to save us some cents at the pump. Stop scaring ignorant voters for votes.

Educated Black woman voting for Obama or McCain if Hillary is the nominee

It's not taking on the oil companies–that's the problem with the proposal. People may not have noticed, but the oil companies like their profits. If you institute a windfall profit tax, they'll just start charging more. The government needs to get the money somehow, and the oil companies aren't going to allow them to just take it and not have it affect consumers...her plan is ridiculous.

Economist, Senators, Congressman, Superdelegates, Hillary supporters agree with Obama on this one. Even if you don't support Obama this is pure and simple pander. She stole pander from McCain and wants to criticize Obama for it. Obama may have Rev Wright but Hillary is her own biggest enemy.

If all church goers were responsible for there pastors, there be alot of catholics in prison. Vote Obama.

Hillary's gas tax holiday doesn't take on the oil companies, it takes on our road systems. The oil companies still make the same money.

Sometimes those expert opinions should be taken with a grain of salt. Were there any economists warned prudently about current sub prime crisis. All I saw and read was praising the Mr. Alan Greenspan the Fed chairman since late president Ronald Reagan era.

That would be great- a president who doesn't listen to economists and doesn't see anything wrong with that. She probably wouldn't listen to foreign policy advisors, either. She will just do or say anything to get elected.

Clinton said she didn’t understand the resistance her plan is getting since its intention is to provide relief.

I guess that puts Clinton "above" the opinions of experts. "Friggin Genious for President!"

This just lost her my support! George Bush wouldnt listen to experts.... Hillary wants to do what will win her Votes. EVERY expert I listened to on the three-month Gas Tax said it would lose about 300,000 American Jobs, our detriorating infastruction will go unattended and only save Americans $28 on average throughout the next 4 months. I would rather they continue to work on the falling bridges, broken roads and keep 300,000 Americans working. But, like she said, She dont care what the consequences will be. She thinks North Carolinians and Indianans are dumb enough to settle for her gimmicks. BAD Calculation!!! Hillary Rodam Bush-Clinton

So if Hillary wouldn't listen to economist about how a gas tax holiday would effect the economy, do you really think she would bother listening to any other advisors throughout her presidency? Or would she rely on Bill for advise...maybe just about ethics, right?
