Sen. John McCain said he has no opinion on the Democratic battle for a nominee.
Sen. John McCain said he has no opinion on the Democratic battle for a nominee.

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (CNN) – John McCain, who consistently avoids commenting on the Democratic horserace, was forced to discuss the ongoing fight between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama on Monday when a voter asked him: “What scenario is best for you?”

McCain admitted he watches cable news coverage of the Demoratic race “like everybody else.”

“I observe with interest,” McCain answered. “I have heard one argument that says this that the competition between Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama allows me a chance to establish roots, unite the party, et cetera.”

“And then I have heard the other argument on the other side, and I channel surf like every body else, that this is a chance for the Democrats to sign up new voters and invigorate their party,” he said. “I really have no opinion because I really have no influence on it.”

Despite McCain’s ability to get his message out relatively unfettered as the Democratic candidates do battle, he suggested his current advantage ultimately may not matter.

“I do believe that most Americans do make a decision generally after the conventions,” he continued. “They watch the conventions and then they start watching the campaign.”

On the issues of health care, judicial appointments, taxes and national security, McCain rattled off a litany of policy differences between himself and the Democrats. He said the general election will offer “as probably as stark a choice as Americans have ever had.”

Let's just get it over with, give the whitehouse keys to McCain and let him "bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran." Oh and while you're out, can you raise the gas prices a couple more dollars, it's too cheap, and my money is starting to burn a hole in my pocket. Congratulations, Hillary supporters, you have just screwed the country for the third straight time! Viva McBush!

Even if we win in Iraq tomorrow we need a long-term plan for fighting Islamo-fascist terror. The order in which these people are equipped to continue to keep us safe is :

-McCain
-Hillary
-Obama

My family has been in America since before the Revolution 1720 to be exact. If Obama or Clinton becomes President I'm thinking of defecting to UK or Canada.

Thank God the country's forefathers set up the electorial college back then it was because the general public wasn't educated enough to vote. Today it still holds true. They may have degrees but they are stupid and can't think for them selves.

Obama is Chicago Politics which makes Louisiana Politics look saintly so when it comes to the general election he will send out his surregates as Al Capone send out his hitmen to rub out his rivals. Next thing you know we will have a Friend Of Obama's list of strange events. Obama is no saint!

John Smith: I hate to break it to you, but not all people with degrees are informed. I have two years of college with no AA and I managed to do the research and become informed. Your argument that only those with a minimum of an AA degree is ridiculous.

As for those with even 4 year degrees, I have worked with those people for years and I can tell you that many of them are very ill informed. I even have a friend who is so ill informed, she buys into conspiracy theories instead of actually looking at the candidates closely and doing the research.

McCain is smart not to get involved cuz the Dems are doing all the trash talking for him. Hopefully they will split Indiana/NC so they can continue there stupitity while I see no way Clinton can get the nomination. Then again, Bush stole the 2000 election from Goore, so Clinton can do the same to Obama.

David S.   May 5th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

“I really have no opinion because I really have no influence on it.”

Huh? Does John McCain want to be the President of all Americans or just enough to squeak by in November. He ought to be trying to win over independents and libertarians in North Carolina who can choose what ballot they want tomorrow. He ought to be trying to convince Democrats that neither of their choices tomorrow is worth voting for. For all the talk of the Democratic Party being "torn" apart by the drawn-out primaries, Dems are registering a heck of a lot of new voters. John McCain shouldn't be be so non-chalant about that.

Michael Ray Thompson   May 5th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Wow, I really don't think it makes a whole lot of difference who the Democrats nominate. They've blown it. They've given Democrats the choice between a rookie Senator from Illonois and a veteran liberal from New York. John McCain will coast to victory in November. Thanks Democrats!

You can't be more polarizing than a man who has a 20 year pastor who hates white people, jews, and Americans. You can't be more polarizing than a man who gets into the Illinois state senate by kicking all his opponents off the ballot to run unopposed. You can't be more polarizing than a man who has a 17 year friendly relationship with a corrupt political fixer. You can't be more polarizing than a man who tells the Teamsters union to give him an endorsement and he'll put an end to the oversight to root out corruption in the Teamsters union. You can't be more polarizing than a man who had a 15 year relationship with an American terrorist couple who wishes today, that he could blow up more government buildings. Obama… The great uniter. I hope that the teamster’s union members were channel surfing today and listened to the interview where Obama (who had won the support of the union by promising to lift sanctions) is now saying that he would examine the issue (of lifting sanctions) when he becomes president. The person who was interviewing Obama could not get him to commit to his promise to the teamster’s union members. I guess that now that he has their backing he does not see the need to keep his promise.
This shows that while Obama accuses Clinton of playing the same old Washington politics he is doing a good job playing the same game.

chicagotrauma   May 5th, 2008 9:38 pm ET

I suspect McCain is pandering and flip-flopping on certain issues from t he past to get elected.

All three candidates are flip-floppers and panderers.

I like McCains senate voting history, check out citizens for government waste. He is good at "no pork" unlike Clinton and Obama. Coming from Illinois I know Obama was worthless regarding his service to the state. I'm from Illinois and I don't know or trust this get at all. Clinton is guilty of a lot of wasteful spending, and I suspect that my taxes would
go up to pay for her ideas.
All three have their scandals, so fundraising scandals and pandering should not be used to decide which one to vote for.
I think Mc Cain will do what he wants when he gets to the white house, and I'm OK with that. At least he is not a socialist.
By the way…. there is only one o in "losing".

JC   May 5th, 2008 9:34 pm ET

For each major primary. Hillary has a ploy. It was the NAFTA leak from Obama's camp just before the OH primary. Then it was reported that Hillary camp told Canada exactly what she criticized Obama's camp did. And, then her chief strategist Mark Penn went further to secretly meet with Columbian officials on proposing a free trade agreement.

Now Hillary's ploy is the gas tax holiday. That is the carrot on the stick for Indiana. You people should ask your neighbors in Ohio how they were cheated by Hillary.

Richard, FL   May 5th, 2008 9:33 pm ET

McCain can't remember meeting with Bud Paxson about a communications favor, can't remember meeting twice with controversial host Bill Cunningham, can't remember saying he wasn't good at economics, can't remember the difference between Shia and Sunnis FIVE times, and now can't remember that he voted to establish English as our language before opening his all-Spanish website today.

Win Puerto Rico by 70%

Obama was correct when he said that Americans would save about 30. for three months.

Hillary had been saying they would save about 70. over three months. But today she rephrased her lie…er statement. She said that HOUSEHOLDS would save about 70 dollars. I guess some reporter pinned her down to the 70 dollar explanation. Everything she says will have to be researched because she will say anything to win.

Don't trust her America, she lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies ,lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies ,lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies and….. she lies.

Judy   May 5th, 2008 9:09 pm ET

Its strange that I did not hear Obama say that the rebate that the government is givng back was only a "short term fix"! Maybe for those who only use $20 worth of gas a week would not see much of a savings if the gas tax was lifted however; I am a volunteer advocate for children and have to fill my car up at least twice a week, since this money comes out of my own pocket it would be nice to save a little because at this point I am facing either having to cut something out of my own budget or stop helping my kids as much as I do. What this means is that I will not take a vacation this year or weekend trips because I believe that helping these children is more important. I could use the help, Clinton has never said that this was a perement fix to the problem and in fact she has a plan to fix the problem long term, I have not heard anything from McCain or Obama about any long term plans. Obama says that Clinton represents the same old politics in Washington; I say that Obama really represents the same old politics in Washington; talk, talk, talk but don't offer any solutions.

noemi in los angeles   May 5th, 2008 9:06 pm ET

PeopleMag: John Edwards doesn't much care for Clinton's "old politics." In their first joint interview since John, the Democratic former senator and 2004 vice presidential nominee, dropped out of the race in January, the couple named what they liked and disliked about each of the remaining Democrats – and Mrs. Edwards didn't hesitate: "I like Hillary's health care plan." What doesn't she like about the senator from New York and former first lady? "The lobbyist money," she adds. On Obama, she says: "The fact that he has motivated so many young people to be involved, I think is fantastic." What doesn't he like about Clinton? "Um, still a lot of the old politics," John Edwards said. As for Obama, he says: "Sometimes I want to see more substance under the rhetoric." But he cited two things he likes about the charismatic young senator from Illinois: "One is, I think he really does want to bring about serious change and a different way of doing things. And secondly, I think it's a great symbolic thing to have an African-American who could be president."

Jodie, Idaho   May 5th, 2008 9:02 pm ET

Wow!!! I am a republican who is not voting for McCain. I will tell you why. I am a teacher who watches students struggle everyday, as republicans try and destroy the public school system. Education is the only thing that Americans have that put them all on the same playing field. It is the only chance some Americans have to make it in life. If we take that away from them than they have nothing. Please think about the future of your children. I agree with the republicans on some things, but I agree with the democrats on the most important things. Some conservatives vote republican because of abortion and gay marriage, and I am against those things too. But what about killing all those people in Iraq? Sometimes you have to look beyond labels and think about the future.

The country diveded back in the 60′ under the socialist government, took about 20 years for people who followed the idealogy to realized that this "government by the people" was a failed promise.

Remember Communism was lead by the group of elitists. Stalin was supported by the elitists and Hitler too. I'm sure they were sincere men, but sincerely wrong. They were human beings just as faulty as everybody else. The government works well under the leaders who believes in the intelligence and the potentials of common people.

Those who mistakenly pride themselves as the "educated" and look down on people who they think "uneducated" can misjudge things. Remember a little education can be dangerous also for the educated.

You've got to come down from the high places in the 21st century.

The media moguls have done their best to play the race card, firing up the racists and trying to foment fear.

But they have failed. Their campaign of smear and fear has come sliding off Senator Obama, and lies puddled at the feet of those who did the smearing.

Tim from Ohio   May 5th, 2008 8:28 pm ET

I agree with an earlier post that says McCain must be doing something right because he is holding his own against both Senator Clinton and Senator Nobama is the latest national polls. The guy really isn't that bad. However, if he wants to win the presidency, he's going to have to sell the American people on the idea that staying in Iraq is a good move. If he cannot accomplish this task, he will not get elected president. It's pretty plain and simple and he knows that.

Mary Howard   May 5th, 2008 8:28 pm ET

It's so amazing how the American people can crucify a Black man for running for President of the United States mostly by the remarks of someone else and when a white woman straight out lie about (1) being under sniper fire in Bosnia, (2) the treatment of a woman in a hospital among others, it gets a short spread on the news and that's it. Then we have robot McSame with a short memory and the same Bush tactics and everybody thinks America is better off with one of the latter. I say Obama let them have it and when they don't come through on their promises and the American people ask why, the first thing clinton is going to say is that she couldn't because she was under sniper fire and trying to make sure that woman was being treated.Of course the American people will then realize that she only "misspoke" when she was campaigning. McCain won't even remember what promises he made.

If you think Obama is speaking down to you, you probably are one of those unfortunate people who think he's "uppity". Hillary cannot, under any circumstances, get the gas tax holiday pushed through. That's one small detail she hasn't felt the need to address. The rest of congress and the lobbyists will not let her do it. End of story. Hillary may not call you "bitter" but in proposing this nonsense, she is most definitely calling you stupid. She knows she can't get this pushed through, and she thinks you'll vote for her simply because she can. Now THAT, my friends, is talking down to you. Don't buy into her nonsense. She voted the taxes in. She voted for tax shelters for oil companies. And now, because she wants your vote, she's telling you she's on your side. Unbelievable. I'll be happiest when she and Bill are picking up trash on the side of the freeway after their Peter Paul indictment and trial.

Obviously this is her MO – the day before a big primary she releases a negative ad. I hope Obama's camp figured this out by now and planned for this.

She is such a hypocrite – claims to care about "disenfranchised" voters in FL and MI, while all the while knowing that the ONLY way she can win is by disenfranchising the majority of voters who voted for Obama.

I swear, I used to not care if either she or Obama won at first. But the more I've seen her act and react, the less I like her.

We need real change in the criteria for "voting" in any election for the presidency". Here is my proposal, and I await your comments:

Only people with at least an AA degree from a community college should vote for the nominee. That is, we need only those who are "informed" about policy issues to vote.

We expect our president to be brilliant and learned, so should the voters.

KE   May 5th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

If Obama can pull off series of negative coverage like Hillary had to do with hers it will make him a stronger candidate. If two candidates can unite it will be much more stronger.

One of the reason Sen. Obama got good numbers of votes is remember all the media gave very good words and praises for him. Most of us relay on the news.

Remember how Hillary was bombarded with negative coverage and also lost all the black votes to Obama. Yet, Hillary still managed to get good half of the American votes (not including Michigan and Florida). Remember how the media and the Obama people wanted Hillary to get out before we even know the race is over.

Speaking positive about Obama was not the problem, the way the media and the Obama people went little too far belittling other candidate got some of us upset and question about the coverage and the fairness of the election.

We don't know what will happen when McCain comes in to focus.

Whos he kidding,he watches Faux News, thats why hes brain washed in right wing blather. He could have been the original Spanky in Our Gang. His Pastor is and end of the world zealot, whats that tell you? They want to save themselves and dont care who gets killed.

marcelo   May 5th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

K,

Obama isn't arrogant, its that he's not petty like most of these people on here judging him.

And Obama isn't racist either. His pastor may have some anger about injustices he's witnessed during his life… but hey, my father (a chinese man) has the same anger against blacks… But that doesn't make me a racist… and as much as I'm dissappointed in my father's racial prejudism, I can understand that he had different experiences than me growing up, and beneath that layer of his personality, he's a great dad, a strong catholic and loves his family and community very much… my hope is that time will heal his wounds.

Meanwhile, I don't excuse his outrageous behavior but I don't abandon his 28 years of love either.

Sylvia   May 5th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

McCain,
Do you surf the web?

mcd   May 5th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

Obama had 6 delegates endorse him today – I think that is news, don't you CNN?

maria Mtl, Can.   May 5th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Oh are you medical report is ready now, ,,,

Mary   May 5th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

The Republicans want Hillary to win for the simple fact being she will never beat Senator MCCain.

K   May 5th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

Obama is an arrogant putz who sat in a racist church for 20 years. Do you enjoy when he talks down to you?

She cannot be trusted   May 5th, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Hillary has gas lobbyists campaigning for her, so who do you think profits from this hypothetical gas holiday? You might save $30 over the course of the summer, but you'll be paying up to $5 a gallon AFTER the holiday.
SHELL and CISCO say: If you give me a dollar, I'll give you 5 nickels and you'll have more money in your pocket..

One last thing: why is she offering a gas holiday THIS summer knowing full well she doesn't have the power to give it? Hypothetical talk to get votes is a very cheap way of pandering.

Lonnie   May 5th, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Whats up with the polls CNN is putting out there, Hillary up by 4% in Indiana, Barack loosing ground, Something is up, none of the other polls show this information. Also, why is Barack drawing 13,000 at a time and Hilary only 1,200 to half an auditorum. The numbers are not adding up!!! And CNN's total delegate count do not match MSNBC's and other stations.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   May 5th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

You better make sure your name is included in the secret "bunker" for hiding if this McCain wins the presidency. All of his family will be hiding in the "bunker" what about yours and mine? Remember all the things our government told us to do in a nuclear disaster or chemical and then decided it was up to each state to determine what's best. Which came down to cover your own ….. because the duct tape won't protect you.

Mary May King   May 5th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Haven't figured out how we descend from gutter. Is that a McCain plan or an Obama plan? Or maybe a Bosnian tailspin? Or is that "talespin?"

One way to provide an example to the world would be in our command of the English language.

If McCain needs prayer, please don't call on Rev. Wright. He has a tendency to lose his temper and order God to curse people with his skin pallor.

So, if caveat emptor applies to Clinton, does caveat venditor apply to Obama, since we know he's selling something? Clean hands doctrine works well with McCain, don't you think? Especially if he washes his hands of Bush?

Ric   May 5th, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Democrats for Mc Cain '08 !!

Hillard   May 5th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

What is wrong with Hillary? Does she not know decency? I think she is being used by the Republicans to distract Democrats from real issues and the presidency.

Read Roland Martin on the front of CNN right now – He says it all – Let's get behind Roland Martin and don't forget to vote for Obama no matter what other people say.

A little help for undecided voters. Sometimes it is hard to make up your mind when you are being bombarded from every angle. It gets tough because your hart strings sometimes get's tangled with your mind logic.

There are some fun & simple things that you can do to make a good sound choice for President! And with the internet you can find plenty of good info. in a quick easy way.

1. Define what it is that you want in a President. by making two list, matters of the hart and matters of mind.

2. Measure the candidates on those issues on a score from 1 to 10, 10 being the high score.

3. Analyze the score by totaling your scores in each list and then review the two list and the scores.

4. Score each list by level of importance to you, same scale (1 to 10)

5. Score each list by your satisfaction factor of scores on the list, same scale (1 to 10) and total all scores on list.

Then chew up the list and swallow it so now one can tamper with the results. Get a goodnight's sleep, get up in the morning and make some coffee, eggs, bacon and toast with jelly or butter and go vote for Barack Obama ;)

GloriafromPA   May 5th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

I still think he should ask Hillary to be the VP on his ticket. They speak a differnt tale, but they are not far apart on most things. Hey, Hillary thinks he would make a great president, and she takes her economic plans from him – even though he admits, and shows, he knows nothing about the economy. Now that's a dream ticket. Google Paul vs Clinton and learn why the superdelegates are picking Obama. He changed Hillary's lead from 22 to 14.

Jane, NC   May 5th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

He's right. There is a litany of differences between the Republican candidate and whomever is the Democratic nominee. There are stark differences, as Sen. McCain says. And one of those differences is that the vast, vast majority of Americans are going to support the Democratic candidate.

jd   May 5th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

Maybe Hillary should change her party to Republican. OBAMA/o8

Indiana for Barack   May 5th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

He said. “I really have no opinion because I really have no influence on it.

Don't worry Johnny McSame, you will not have influence on the general election either. Let Barack win the nomination and then see him come after you.

An American in Canada   May 5th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

John McCain don't you think you should be resting up, H.R. Clinton will be coming to debate you very shortly.

She will be the democratic nominee and has been getting ready for her final hurdle.

HERE IS HOW IT GOING TO GO DOWN:

H.R. CLINTON WINS INDIANA BY 53% OF THE VOTES

BIG UPSET IN NORTH CAROLINE H.R. CLINTON WINS BY 51% SHOWING WHAT A GREAT CHAMPION SHE REALLY IS.

HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON, THE FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT OF
AMERICA..

GOD BLESS AMERICAN AND GOD BLESS PRESIDENT CLINTON

Ardnuas   May 5th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

STOP THE MADNESS   May 5th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

John McCain like all republicans want Hillary Clinton to win, they are doing all they can to help her to include making it hare or harder than it has to be even with rev. wright and everything else. Media has been doing all they can by looping the soundbites recking havoc on weak minds.

Navy Vet   May 5th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

No wonder he channel surfs, Sen. Clinton is running a republican campaign better than Sen. McCain, and he should take lessons from her.

Cavaet Emptor with Sen. Clinton, you get what you pay for.

She would make a good running mate for him!

Soupy   May 5th, 2008 7:02 pm ET

As much as I dislike McCain's politics he isn't that bad of a guy. Just a bit out of it sometimes. He would have made a better president than Bush eight years ago. Today, not so sure.

MP-Pennsylvania   May 5th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

McCain Vs Obama will take our country to a new political culture.

From gutter to descency

President of the united states of america is one of the highest office in the world.

We need to set examples for others

Our political culture is not what we can be proud of.

Prmaries have been no different than third world countries

It is time to show we americans have descency

DAN   May 5th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

He's doing somthing right, He beats or ties Obama in almost every poll and looses to Hillary but not by much and all the while Bushes numbers are the worst of any president.

No McCain   May 5th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

You actually look like a Couch Potatoe surfing the channels and yelling at the TV set why it has no more Vietnam war movies.

Joe   May 5th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

Hey McCain. Want a prayer to be elected President in 08? Then develope a real plan to withdraw from Iraq within your first four year term. Otherwise MY FREIND. You are toast!
