Oscar winning actor Tom Hanks backs Obama.

NEW YORK (AP) — Tom Hanks is supporting presidential hopeful Barack Obama.

Hanks has taken to his MySpace.com page to pledge his support for Obama, who is competing to be the first black president.

Obama, who faces rival Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination, has also been endorsed by Oprah Winfrey, Bruce Springsteen and Scarlett Johansson.

"As an official celebrity, I know my endorsement has just made your mind up for you," the 51-year-old actor says in a short video titled, "Beware: Celebrity Endorsement."

"History with a capital 'H' is going to be made this November, no matter who the president-elect is. I want Barack Obama to be president of this country, a country that once said people with his skin color were only three-fifths of a human being."

Who Cares?   May 5th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

I care. It's very interesting to see who "comes out" in support of which candidate, and why.

On the whole, it seems that celebrity supporters of Obama tend to be people known as much for their intelligence and/or good character as for their talents.

Celebrity endorsers of Clinton seem much more likely to be the usual, predictably superficial types.

Hardly scientific — but really very telling, nonetheless.

William Wright   May 5th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

If you are backing Obama because he is black. You are blind wrong. If you don't listen to what he wants to do and who is backing him you are wrong. He has no idea of what to do. He has no real ideas except the ones he had when in washington. Which was what ever Bush wanted he backed him. This can be proven by looking at his record for the time he has been in washington.

Alston   May 5th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

CNN pushes the only positive article on Obama today down the order..

They are gradually losing credibility in my eyes of being non-biased. I'm sure there more who share my views around the world, not just in America.

One more person to hold accountable if Obama gets the nomination and when the Democrats lose the White House AGAIN!

Just who is Senator Obama competing with to be "the first black president"? I thought he was just running for president, and I certainly am not aware of any other black candidates running for the office this year.

Words matter, journalists.

Why isn't CNN reporting Barack super delegates support he received today? There were quite a large number of them. And to the Marine who said 'who cares' i agree, it's just how i felt when CNN reported the nascar driver (who i never heard of) was endorsing Clinton.

wait a minute   May 5th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Tom Hanks is an intelligent celebrity, while Liz Taylor is not.
Their movies showed their talent and depth.

Birds of the same feather flock together.
Hanks for Obama, while Taylor for Hillary.

Add up all the celebrity endorsements and the I.Q. remains in double digit territory. It's a toss up between "Run Obama Run!" and "life is like a box of (light) chocolates!" as the theme for Mr. Hanks' politicall advert. Speaking of Oprah, she's been mighty silent lately. No need to wonder why, as the answer is obvious: Ratings!

Sam   May 5th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Thanks Tom! I am very worried about CNN. Why are they the only news network reporting Obama to be behind in their poll of polls in Indiana? Why are they not reporting the four supers that Obama picked up over the weekend and the two he picked up today and the three he will be picking up later today from Illinois? I know they are aware of all this, I just don't get why they aren't reporting it!

Three more super delagates endorsed Obama today, and not even a mention by CNN. Instead they chose to highlight the endorsment of a race car driver for Hillary.

Navy Vet.   May 5th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

If even Forest Gump endorses Obama, how can we lose.

I know Sen. Clinton has the short haired, dirty blonde, fast driving, trash talking, women's vote sewn up… So we may have to give up at least that demographic. But, I'd almost be willing to bet that she doesn't even have a full lock on that group either!

I'm sure Mr. Gump would say something to the effect of "Sen. Clinton's campaign is like a box of chocolates, you'll never know what you are going to get in the last 24 hours before the polls open."

Selena , Canada   May 5th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

The DNC is the big loser in this mess.
Somebody should educate them , one vote per person and make it count.
Endorsements have become a side show and turn a serious political process into nothing more than tabloid politics.
Race and gender shouldn't be a factor , vote for your candidate based on the issues.

blessed   May 5th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

Okey Dokey Tom, You R the Man! You know truth when you see it and hear it. Some people just want the same old same old mess. They don't care that with McCain and Clinton nothing will change it will get worse and we will be sold to the lowest bidder. They will ship 85% of our jobs overseas and pocket whatever they can. They don't care about America or Americans. They just want in by any means possible. I hope that the people wake up to the LIES AND CHEATING of Clinton & McCain and their campaign people.

For All the Hype about oil prices and the WAR ! ( never was formally declared a war.) it seems to me that the candidates can spend some of their election money on the veterans of this "WAR" and not on negative propaganda. If one of them did that, and not care about what the other guy said. That would be the one i vote for.

Mr. Hanks, you've had a very fortunate career, but you've picked the wrong candidate. Our country has been left with serious problems by the Bush administration. Sen. Clinton's candidacy is a rare window of opportunity to elect a woman who will probably make a more capable president than any we have had in the history of our country. Many of us like Sen. Obama, but It was his choice to run too soon. He's not ready for this job.

We have a whacky relationship with celebrities in this country. We get all wrapped up in who this actor or that singer wants to be president, when it really matters no more than the guy that fixes your car or delivers your Pizza.

Has Tom Hanks become some respected legal scholar while I wasn't looking? No, he's just some guy with an opinion. He's entitled to it of course, but it's not news.

WHY TOM HANKS MATTERS– Filmmaker Tom Hanks appreciates history and the guiding principles that make our country great. His work reflects his desire to see us live up to our highest ideals. Whether it is through telling the story of John Adams, World War II, or small- town America in "That Thing You Do," he is all about doing the right thing.

You might not know it, but Tom Hanks is a fourth cousin, four generations removed, of former President Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States.

Watch his endorsement of Barack Obama on YouTube. Better yet CNN — why don't you include the whole transcript instead of the silly piece you chose to include above with the ridiculous photo you picked.

Tom Hanks offers a message I hope all Americans will take to heart, now and in November.

Tom Hanks — you are the best!

Michael, North Carolina   May 5th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

This is a great endorsement, from a great guy. Mr. Hanks is a man that is not fooled by the lies of Sen. Clinton. He believes America must move forward to a brighter and better America. Mr. Hanks judgement also represents his movie performances which is the best.
Thanks Mr. Hanks for your support, and contiune to make great movies.

Tom Hanks comments about the black population and how they were once seen (years in the past) is a racial comment and Barack Obama should not be nominated just because he is black.

Who is the real elitist?? A pat on the head and 30 bucks in the wallet might sway a few folks, but the truth is it's more of the same misleading, elitist, top-down Beltway nonsense that's gotten us into the mess we're in.

Anonymous   May 5th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

marine!!! you have got to be a clinton supporter.so negative.no one told you.to be on the losing side.it's your fault."lollllll

Michael in NC   May 5th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

I care. Here's someone who a great deal of people respect as a wonderfully talented artist, who consistently chooses thought-provoking projects like Philadelphia, Saving Private Ryan, and Charlie Wilson's War in order to help and heal (and call into question) our nation's collective conscience. And now he's come out with his honest, straightforward endorsement of Barack. He knows that his choice shouldn't make up other people's minds for them, but he also knows that his voice will encourage others to at least listen to Barack's message of hope and change. Way to go, Mr. Hanks!

This is so non-significant. He is just an ordinary citizen backing Obama - his being an actor means nothing. Please report some important news CNN.

Fantastic! Another great american with common sense, something that a lot of people lacks. I see why so many people are conned on a daily basis, they will believe anything if it sounds good. Think about it people, how can a 30 cents gas drop help us for two months. We need a permanent fix. It doesn't take rocket scientist to figure this one out, or does it. hmmmm

The Three-fifths Compromise was from 1787! Are you kidding me! Hanks is a joke.
Let us all be reminded that blacks owned slaves too.
I have no confidence in any of the candidates, and that is sad.
To think I once thought that Hanks was an intelligent man, shame on him.
Obama will tear this country apart, because he is not who we think he is, we don't even know him.
I hear woman at work voting for Obamba , not even his name, because he aint old and rinkley like Clinton- God help us.

Sharon   May 5th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

Love Tom Hanks and his movies.

Another Smart person who knows that Obama is a uniter and can heal this country.

Clinton can keep Elton John, I'll take Tom Hanks for him any day of the week.

Charlotte   May 5th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

I love Tom Hanks, I just don't happen to agree with him. Most actors are extreme liberals. I am a moderate liberal. I, as a Reagan Democrat, will never vote for Obama. It has nothing to do with race. It has to do with the lies he has told and the way he hym haws around questions. He never really seems to answer. He was not sure how he would have voted for the war in Iraq when supporting Kerry. Now that he knows most of us disagree with the war, he is against it. He claimed he was born as a result of the Selma marches, he was born before they took place? He only took 150 thousand dollars from Rezko, Lie. He never heard Rev. Wright speak like that, oops wait, I did but now I disagree. I could no longer disown Rev Wright then I could my White Grandmother? Now I can throw my uncle/mentor under the bus, because it is politically necessary.

JohnS   May 5th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Thank you Tom. The right thing to do.

Hopeful that the scales will be removed off the eyes of others.

Real leaders have to inpire and unite the country.

All Hillary does is further dividing the Democratic Party and the Country. Time to step down for Hillary

Bill (Louisiana)   May 5th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Who cares who Tom Hanks supports. Who cares about any Hollywood Actor/Actress supporting politicians. Very few of them have any loyalty when they marry about fifteen times before they die.

Barrack Obama, Hilliary Clinton, and John McCain are all loyal from my perspectives. Especially after what Hilliary went through and could still remain loyal to her husband.

The issues should not be Bill Clinton or Barrack's wife and minister, it should be the issues and where they stand. Hilliary and John are at a bigger disadvantage because they are veterans. Barrack is still wet behind the ear and no telling if he will accomplish what he says he wil or will not do.

The bottom line is what the people as a whole think and what those disloyal super delegates will or will not do.

rodney   May 5th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

This barrack supporter doesn't really care about a Tom Hanks endorsement. I prefer Parris Hilton. At least this way, he can gain the stuck up vote.

I used to be a great fan of cnn, because of the extent and intensity of their news coverage. However, it appears they are hiding in an "old shell" (of objective and constructive journalism) to perpetrate overt partiality. Please come out from your shell and declare for Clinton, so that we know who you are. America is greater than Obama, Clinton, and McCain - all these leaders will come and go, but its their good works or bad works that will remain. I am terribly disappointed in your negative journalism towards Obama, I do not think you can claim to be serving this great nation - when you leave substance and pursue selfish goals!

Rich people without a clue for Obama. The very left and very right march in ignorance. How much fuel do Travolta and Hanks burn? Actors like these portray heroes while real people go to war to pay in blood for the fuel these false heroes drink.

I'm an Obama supporter and still celebrity endorsements aren't worth crap. These people are good at making movies other than that they are as adept at picking leaders as every one else. We should all rebuke the media for playing up the celebrity culture non-sense.

I am a white woman over 60 who hopes the man of hope wins. Hillary Clinton reminds me of all the female highschool principals I have known, except she is more ruthless. She would not be a senator much less running for president except that she is riding on Bill Clinton's coattails. I hope people can listen to more than sound bites in choosing our next president and choses Barak Obama.

We as American must think for ourselves. We must not rely on 30-second ads to sway our opinions. The more i listen to the two democratic canidate the more i feel that mrs. clinton is trying to decieve the public. where do she really stand on all of the free (not fair) trade agreements? Probably somewhere b/t mr. penn and bill clinton. At least she wears the flag which means she relates to ordinary americans….

Tom Hanks knows the character of a person when he sees them. Barack Obama will make the best president this country has ever had. Hiliary Clinton has all the sleazy baggage from Bill's administration. We need a nice decent family like the Obama's to help our countries image all over the world. I just can't imagine what the headlines will be if the Clintons move back into "our" house.

Great article today by CNNS own Glen Beck. Its a must read entitled "Obama's odd timing on Wright".

"I'm glad Obama has come to the same conclusion that Wright's critics came to long ago. I just wonder why it took me two minutes and him two decades."

That sums it up for me. We need a leader not a Politician trying to do anything he can to get elected.

Go Hillary
