Clinton loans herself $6.4 million

Clinton has loaned her campaign a total of $11.4 million.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Democrat Hillary Clinton has loaned her presidential race $6.4 million over the last month, bringing the total amount of money she has lent herself to $11.4 million.

And she is willing to lend herself more money, top adviser Howard Wolfson told reporters Wednesday, a day after Clinton eked out a narrow victory over Sen. Barack Obama in Indiana's Democratic primary but lost to him by a landslide in North Carolina.

The $11.4 million she has lent her campaign this year is about the same as the amount she earned from book sales and her Senate salary, Wolfson said.

On a conference call with reporters, Wolfson said the loan proves Clinton is committed to staying in the presidential race.

"The loans are a sign of her commitment to continuing the race, her commitment to continuing the process and her commitment to staying competitive with Senator Obama on television and other areas," he said.

"The campaign continues to raise a lot of money, but Senator Obama, to his credit, is also raising a lot of money."

Clinton loaned herself $5 million on April 11, $1 million on May 1 and $425,000 since then, the campaign said Wednesday. The senator from New York loaned her campaign $5 million in February.

Clinton began the month of April with close to $32 million in cash on hand, but only $9 million of that total could be spent during the primary season, according to the most recent campaign reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.

The report also showed that Clinton owed more than $10 million, meaning she was in the red even before she heavily stepped up television advertising ahead of the Pennsylvania primary in late April.

The day after her convincing Pennsylvania win on April 22, the Clinton campaign said it raised $10 million on the Internet. The campaign has not said how much it has raised since her close win in Indiana and her North Carolina loss Tuesday.

Is that allowed? What happened to the 10 million she made after the PA primary?

And just an added note. I thought last night, as I did in her victory speech in PA, that it is absolutely disgraceful to ask for money in her speech.
It reminds me of hearing the big TV pastors trying to spread the word of God, with their hand out.
There are many ways to raise money, but asking the very people to whom you've just stated are hurting from gas prices, and can't buy groceries, is just lame.
Sorry, but it sounds pathetic. And I would say that about any candidate who did that.

  2. Go Obama

My goodness.. she is blowing her own money on nothing? She really wants to divide this party.. its either win or die with her.

Howard Dean do something.. this is getting way out of hand!!

If this goes on much farther... we will lose the Presidential election!! Is she that dumb that she doesnt see she wont win? Or is it the fact that she wants it so badly she is willing to do ANYTHING and I mean ANYTHING to get it? Its obvious she cant take a loss lightly.

I bet she has something up her sleeve to bring Rev Wright back into the media like she did the last time.

Maybe her pal Rush Limbaugh (the only reason she won Indiana – by less then 2 points mind you) can give her some more cash.

What kind of “non”-elitist has $6.4 million to loan her campaign?

Where are all her supporters that believe in Hillary? They certainly are not supporting her financially. I think this shows that despite her Penn. win she didn't really raise that much after that primary, Operation Chaos needs to take credit for some of her victories lately and most of those that say they will not support Obama are actual Republicans. Look what theyRepublicans) did in Florida in Michigan , they moved the primaries but Obama is getting the rap for that. Republicans know with Bush's last 7 years and McCain the nom, Operation Chaos is the only way to win.

6.4 Million !! –geez what an Elitist. She better start making a myspace page or something. She doesn't have any ground to ask anyone for money at this point. Clinton, just gracefully step down.

What is wrong with this lady, someone needs to give her her meds. and sit down and tell her it is over. This is a character flaw in which she sees the world through unrealistic ideals.

Is her campaign going back into debt again? That's not a good sign. If she becomes president, how is she going to manage our crippled economy? Maybe she plans to keep paying for her mistakes from her own purse. How long is that $100 million going to last, Hillary?

I was going to post here to encourage Hillary to step down, but now that I think about it, there's a certain symetry to her borrowing herself into a financial bankruptcy to match her new political and moral ones.

  23. WE NEED THE TRUTH

She can afford it. No big deal.

But seriously fellow Democrats...I've bashed Hillary during some of my comments and I'm done with doing that. One thing I know is that all of us democrats will have to come together to win in Nov, because we cannot afford McCain.

Ouch... Overspending on a fruitless, desperate campaign will not get you anywhere.

You know, I find it hilarious that Clinton supporters think they're damaging Obama by saying that they're voting for McCain. The only people they're really damaging are themselves, and they don't even realize it. It's looking more like, "This will hurt me more than it hurts you."

I just really wonder if this will make the news stories today. To me it seems like the media is trying thier best to keep questioning stuff like this out of the main steam news. Does this mean that she is trying to buy the White house?
