Clinton: West Virginia a must-win for Democrats

Sen. Hillary Clinton says West Virginia is a test for her and Sen. Barack Obama.
Sen. Hillary Clinton says West Virginia is a test for her and Sen. Barack Obama.

CHARLESTON, West Virginia (CNN) – Hillary Clinton told West Virginia supporters Thursday morning that any Democratic nominee needed to win their state to claim the presidency - and that every successful candidate since Woodrow Wilson had.

“It’s a test for me, and it’s a test for Sen. Obama because for too long we have let places like West Virginia slip out of the Democratic column,” said Clinton at a rally in the state capitol, during her second day of campaigning in the state.

“...I think the hard working voters of West Virginia represent the heart and soul of the Democratic Party and the backbone of our victory in November.”

Amid questions of whether she can still win the nomination, Clinton argued that she is beating Obama with the groups of people McCain will be targeting in the Fall – Catholics, Hispanics, blue-collar workers and senior citizens. Clinton also called McCain a "formidable" opponent.

“We’re going to have a run a vigorous, victorious campaign in November. That’s why I am building such a strong and broad coalition among the states and among the voters we must have to deliver the White House.

“This is a little like deja vu all over again,” Clinton told the crowd. “Some in Washington wanted us to end our campaign and then I won New Hampshire. Then we had huge victories on Super Tuesday. Then we won Ohio and Texas and Pennsylvania. And I was never supposed to win Indiana. Well, I am running to be president of all 50 states.”

I've lost all respect for Hillary Clinton. She is single handedly tearing the democratic party apart for her own, selfish reasons. She's just a power hungry individual who will not admit defeat. Figure it out Hillary. You disgust me.

Maybe Hillary is right. Maybe W.V. is important.

Somebody needs to remind Barack Obama to campaign there, because her name won't be on the ballot in November!

What are these states that the Dems have allowed to slip away because of doing what? Such a dribble of a logic stream coming from her camp lately.

To summarize a recent editorial, just because Hillary has the 'right' to continue the campaign does NOT make it the RIGHT thing to do for the democratic party. The Clinton's boast that Hillary wakes up in the morning to live for the democratic party is getting pretty hard to stomach.

And the goal posts are moved yet again!!!

Why are the only states that are "must-wins" the ones that Hillary wins? That is so dismissive of the other 21 states and territories that she lost and is the very reason why she will not win the nomination.

Ohio was the crucial state, Pennsylvania was a crucial state, Indiana was a crucial state=whatever state Hillary stands to win is a crucial state. Just as each successive round of primaries becomes the "big test," etc. That language may win her some votes in West Virginia, but the amount of delegates she is likely to win there isn't going to really help her position as far as getting the nomination goes.

It is funny and sad at the same time.
Take a deep breath Hillary. It is not the end of the world if you lose. Maintain some dignity and decency.

I thought it was the hard working people of Ohio, no PA, no wait IN that were the heart and sould of the Democratic party??? Guess it is whatever state she needs to give her the hope that she will win, sigh too bad she could have been a gdecent person too.

She will carry WV and KY though, they are, after all her people White uneducated bigots. Wanna bet they prove me right?

Her facts are not straight. She did not win in Texas. Actually Obama received more delegates there. She was suppose to win PA by double digits and did not. She was suppose to win Indiana by 4/5. . . I trying to figure out; who should play her when the movie comes out?

These democratic superdelegates need to be replaced. They are the ones destroying the party. They don't know when to put a stop to a running dissaster.

"WORKING, HARD WORKING AMERICANS, WHITE AMERICANS..."

why are you burying this racist Hillary comment CNN? If Obama said anything remotely similar, it would stay at the top of the newsreel for a week, with commentary left and right about how polarizing he is. Even when she has lost, your Hillary bias is really getting to be ridiculous.

Play with the delegate tracker, she needs to win 70% of ALL REMAINING DELEGATES to get to 2,025. the game is over, the fat lady has sung...

Wait... Who won Texas? Obama won the caucus AND walked away with MORE delegates. How do you define winning Hillary? Oh, I guess you counted all the Rush Limbaugh supporters who voted for you in Texas.

Hillary does well among one demographic – Republicans who will vote against her in the general.
