Clinton: West Virginia a must-win for Democrats

Sen. Hillary Clinton says West Virginia is a test for her and Sen. Barack Obama.

Sen. Hillary Clinton says West Virginia is a test for her and Sen. Barack Obama.

CHARLESTON, West Virginia (CNN) – Hillary Clinton told West Virginia supporters Thursday morning that any Democratic nominee needed to win their state to claim the presidency - and that every successful candidate since Woodrow Wilson had.

“It’s a test for me, and it’s a test for Sen. Obama because for too long we have let places like West Virginia slip out of the Democratic column,” said Clinton at a rally in the state capitol, during her second day of campaigning in the state.

“...I think the hard working voters of West Virginia represent the heart and soul of the Democratic Party and the backbone of our victory in November.”

Amid questions of whether she can still win the nomination, Clinton argued that she is beating Obama with the groups of people McCain will be targeting in the Fall – Catholics, Hispanics, blue-collar workers and senior citizens. Clinton also called McCain a "formidable" opponent.

“We’re going to have a run a vigorous, victorious campaign in November. That’s why I am building such a strong and broad coalition among the states and among the voters we must have to deliver the White House.

“This is a little like deja vu all over again,” Clinton told the crowd. “Some in Washington wanted us to end our campaign and then I won New Hampshire. Then we had huge victories on Super Tuesday. Then we won Ohio and Texas and Pennsylvania. And I was never supposed to win Indiana. Well, I am running to be president of all 50 states.”

McCain will devastate Obama in a general election. That's why so many rabid Republicans, like Rush Limbaugh, want Barack to be the nominee. They know that only Hillary can and will beat John. That's also why there is this corporate chorus for her to drop out. Ain't gonna happen.

  4. You Know Who

It's time for Clinton to plan a dignified exit strategy, and end the delusion of contesting presidency. Hmmm. President Barack Obama, has a nice ring to it. Get used to saying it, because he is unstoppable. OBAMA08

If you stay Hillary – you can start fund raising for Obama...(:

West Virginia don't be fooled by her sweet words. You are just next.
First it was Ohio, then Texas, no Pa, No Indiana, now its your turn to be pandered too. Next she will learn spanish for Puerto Rico. Feel for 8 Belles for the KY voters on and on. Then you'll never see her again except on TV. She can't win the nomination, don't waste your vote.

She seems to forget that people have to choose between 2 of the same party now. Come November, it will be between Obama and 4 more years of Bush. Those who vote for Hillary now will have to choose. Not everyone will leave the democartic party. Oh, forget about the swing voters, they are Obama's. Or does she think that he only gets the black vote.

  9. Every State is important!

Uhhhhm....can someone tell her that it is time to unite. I say Hillary finish the race, but stop telling peole that Obama is not the best candidate. If he wasn't the best candidte, he wouldn't be leading with popular vote( that is with FL, MI) since North Carolina and Indiana. If he wasn't the best candidate, he would be leading in delegate count with and without superdelegates. If he wasn't the best candate he wouldn't not have won 32 states while you only won 16..yes 16. With or without the big states.....every state counts, not just big states and WV.

Wake UP PEOPLE.......this is becoming like a joke.

The fact that she is still here shows the lack of strength in the DNC. If the same thingwwas going on in the GOP they would have booted the other candidate out for the unity of the party (i.e. Romney).

This is why Republicans keep winning.

If Hillary doesn't get the nomination, I won't vote. Obama and spouse are not White House material. What are you going to do when he starts spouting what he learned in Church?

  15. Clinton: The Weakest Link

Isn't it clear by now that Hillary is suffering from mental health issues?

What else can explain her latest proclamation, that "hard-working white Americans" will not support Barack?

Hillary's supporters should do this lady a big favor, and get her off the stage before she degrades herself any further.

Hillary doesn't need to win West Virginia. She needs psychiatric treatment.

  16. IN stopped her

We've heard this before. "The road to White House goes through _____________ "(fill in the state), The democratic party is being remade from the bottom up right now. She's not part of the picture. She is actually an outsider to her own party, but then recently, I can't tell what party she belongs to. It's located in a delusional parallel universe somewhere.

We know that you know that we know that you are more intelligent that this. But, than again, pandering to THAT demographic would not get you the most votes would it Hillary?

Yes, keep pandering to the ignorant Hillary – go girl go!

SIgned – "She lost my respect at the last curve!"

People who say they will vote for McCain if Hillary doesn't win are's a petty, childish argument and COMPLETELY not democratic – it's people like you who will destroy this party

  22. Educated Hillary supporter

If the DNC hands Obama the nomination, I think Hillary should refuse to be VP and let him self-destruct. His arrogance and that of his supporters knows no bounds. Putting down hard-working Americans is about as unpatriotic as you get. Kind of seems equal with racism.
