Sources say Harvey Weinstein threatened to cut contributions to congressional Democrats.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Hillary Clinton supporter Harvey Weinstein threatened to cut off contributions to congressional Democrats unless House Speaker Nancy Pelosi embraced his plan to finance revotes in Florida and Michigan, three officials familiar with their conversation said.

Weinstein and Pelosi talked on the phone late last month, the sources said.

The three officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk publicly about the conversation.

They said Weinstein, a top supporter of Clinton's presidential campaign, appeared determined to buy Clinton more time in her battle against Sen. Barack Obama by pushing for the revote. He was also pressing Pelosi to back off her previous comments that superdelegates should support the candidate who's leading in pledged delegates in early June, the sources said.

People with money who then want power…. all the more reason to vote for Obama.

Pelosi should tell him to take his funds & stick 'em! With Obama running, the power is in the hands of the American people.

What's Hillary's stance on lobbyists, again?

Cammi317   May 8th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Okay, last month they wanted to seat the delegates "as is". Now that they realize she would still be a good 100 delegates behind, they want a re-vote. If I were them, I wouldn't push this action. They may get a surprise they did not expect.

Clintons follow the rules? You're joking me. Same Washington crap as usual.

Speaking as someone who grew up in the business and knows first-hand, ask anyone in entertainment what kind of a jerk Weinstein is

to: BIGBEN   May 8th, 2008 11:37 am ET

Not surprising at all! All she can do now is try to smear him! And that has already started. The Clintons are risking losing a lot more than just the nomination, they are going to lose all of their respect, dignity, trust, admiration. Oh… I think they already lost those things.

Blackmail is not the way to win an election. It's called a democracy for a reason, even if your candidate doesn't get the nomination.

Kenny   May 8th, 2008 11:38 am ET

"Weinstein also suggested that if Democratic leaders "did not fix" the Florida and Michigan problem, powerful Democrats may abandon the eventual party nominee in favor of Sen. John McCain"

Democrats who do this are acting like children. Come on…if your candidate doesn't get the nod, you're going to give Bush a 3rd term? Either juvenile actions or empty threats.

Let's come together and end the Republican mismanagement!

Worried Democrat and former Clinton supporter   May 8th, 2008 11:38 am ET

how ridiculous is this sorry excuse for a american women?? She should be ashamed of herself for trying to pit whites against black to create a racial divide. At this point, I pray to god that Hillary supporters hear her repeated divisive comments and start jumping ship. We has democrats stand up for something that Hillary no longer believes in. There isn't any semblance of dignity in this women. The only way she knows how to campaign is to try to tear down Obama and the democratic party. I would respectfully urge clinton supporters who are my fellow democrats to do what's good for our party and give Obama a chance. His policies are 95% the same as clintons and he seems to be a more genuine person.

thank you

Sue   May 8th, 2008 11:38 am ET

These are the Clinton "kool-aid" drinkers who are living in lala land. They've contributed soo much to a loosing campaign that they want to win at all cost so they can get the shady contracts (just like Huliburton) to repay their loans.

Well it's too late now. The train is left the station.

Hang in there Hillary Clinton. The Democratic Party wants you to bow out of the race, and as soon as you do - they're going to count Florida and Michigan, whose numbers would have allowed you to catch up. Then, they'll look like the good guys all around.

We're Americans Hillary. Play to the end. The Democratic Party is known for their underhandedness. That's why they lose every four years - expect when your husband was in office. I'm now an Independent because of this.

Voice for a fairer America.

Kevin - ID   May 8th, 2008 11:43 am ET

Supporting McCain in the national is one thing, why would Clinton supporters want to make the Democrats lose Congressional seats if Clinton doesn't get the nomination? And who thinks that intimidating Pelosi actually works?! I hope Pelosi sends him running with his tail between his legs.

Michael   May 8th, 2008 11:43 am ET

I use to work for Weinstein's company. He is one of the biggest bully's in the business. I have not doubt that he threatened Pelosi. What's the matter Harvey, your candidate cant not win on her own? The people now run the democratic party with almost 2 million donors. We don't need you or your tactics any longer. BYE BYE

hans solo   May 8th, 2008 11:43 am ET

"We have been strong supporters of the DCCC," the fundraisers wrote to Pelosi. "We therefore urge you to clarify your position on superdelegates and reflect in your comments a more open view to the optional independent actions of each of the delegates at the National Convention in August."

I wish him luck Pelosi has made her hatred for Hillary Clinton quite apparent. Pelosi is the most do nothing speaker we have had in my lifetime and she's getting involved in electoral politics? I wish Senator Clinton would dump the Democrats and go Independent. The Democratic leadership has treated her shamefully. I'm jumping parties and voting straight ticket Republican if Obama is the nominee and urge all Clinton supporters to do the same. Give the leadership the thumbs down!

This is flat out black mail! "Do what I want or I won't pay you anymore". You don't own the DNC Weinstein! I expect this sort of crap from the GOP!

Hey Pelosi, you want to see "Disenfrancisement"! Go ahead with the revotes in Mich and Fla! Confirm for the rest of the country that the DNC's rules don't mean anything and that you CAN be bought!

If this happens, I'm done! England here I come.

wwf   May 8th, 2008 11:44 am ET

That does it. Screw them. If this does not show the world just what type of people the Clinton and some of her supporters are capable of I don't know what does. Can't win the election? Just buy it! Just who is the elitist in this campaign? First she borrows her camaign money twice, but will ask her supporters to pay her back. Now they are trying to bully the campagn with money. If the DNC does not tell them where to go, I will become the first registerd Republican in my families history. I was for some sort of compromise, but not more. They broke the rules of which they signed. Let them eat the copies of those rules.
Super Delegates, you have to put an end to this now! To kkkkk with her feelings.

DELMARVA   May 8th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Mr. Weinstein, please stick to moviemaking and out of politics.

You can try to "slow the flow of donations" to the DNC, but it won't work. If you had clout like that as Hillary's supporter, her campaign coffers would be overflowing, but they're not. You are old-school.

Obama has no problem bankrolling his campaign with donations from the little people. When Obama is declared the nominee, the DNC will also benefit from their support.

Turn the page.

Out of Control   May 8th, 2008 11:48 am ET

This guy is utterly ridiculous. The entire Clinton Campaign are a bunch of losers that will do anything, even at all costs, to win. Pelosi should smash this threat, and take control of the party before things get out of hand.

Florida and Michigan were too stupid to follow the rules. It's amazing that no one ever thought about the consequences of the rules when they were made, and agreed upon. It's only when things do not work out that people pay attention. Did Clinton, Michigan, and stupid Florida think the DNC were joking?

WorldObserver   May 8th, 2008 11:48 am ET

About the revote thing, in fairness to all if Obama side has not weighed in their votes (where they missed out on voting), then there shall be a re-opening contest again.

But I also agree that America shall not ignore the voices of these 2 states. After all, it is 50 not 48, made of America.

Obama shall step out to support such move, and not keeping silent.

A vote for change is always there. If both are genuine good leaders, their voices shall be heard.

The world always believe Democrats hold the better masterplan for America and this world.

Stop generating hatred by dis-engaging direct confrontation at this time. You have fought for the freedom of Iraq and Afghan. It is time to withdraw and let the present government handle it.

We truly respect and support America for their great sacrifices.

About the loss of war funds, I hope the World Bank can do something about it apart from Iraq oil revenues. The world has to give something back to America anyway so that their reasons are being appreciated.

Darrell   May 8th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Florida and Michigan both have a right to revote this is America and all votes should be counted you can not have a convention with 48 states Last Time I looked we had 50 states

CA for Obama   May 8th, 2008 11:49 am ET

And why would a rich jerk like you pay for changing rules that everybody agreed upon befor ethe game starts?, probably because it might work out for Billary's benefit, and it's probably in your interest to have her in the office so she can be your puppet, that will also mean that a rich jerk like you want to change what millions of americans voted for, to hell with democracy and welcome to a third world corruption mentality. Mr,.. Whatever, your deep pockets won't change what americans believe in, Change. Mr. Whever, Democracy doesn't need your money, it needs TRUTH, and that's what billary lacks.
In fact, i'm going to donate $50 to Obama's campaign right.
Obama, 08, 12

Gerry In Toronto   May 8th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Doesn't this creep understand, it's the people that have funded the Obama campaign, millions of them.

Obama and the democratic party no longer need to pander to creeps like this. Pelosi was right to tell this creep toa take a flying leap. No one can BUY the presidency, not even the Clinton's.

Not this time. Not any longer.

MoreOftenthanNot   May 8th, 2008 11:49 am ET

So its either make it so Hillary has a better chance at winning the nomination or I'm cutting you off? Hmm. It seems the will of the American people isn't a major concern but the will of Hillary's people is what matters most. I'm sure all of her deep pocket donors stand to benefit a great deal if she gets the nomination and later elected. Same old Washington politics at work.

Lonny, Seattle   May 8th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Whats the problem with her leaning towards Obama?
She is a super D and has the right to pick whomever she wants.

The shame is that she has to hide her preference because of the backlash of Clintons supporters.

That to me says the Clintons have waaay to much power that needs to be kept in check.

Her administration will be worse than the current. I can't believe that they are blackmailing the speaker of the house.

Joseph   May 8th, 2008 11:49 am ET

I say to everyone out there. Howard Dean and the DNC have cheated everyone of their votes who voted for Hillary. This is not some stupid football game. By not allowing Michigan and Florida to be counted and not allowing all Americans votes to be heard they have in effect robbed you of your chance to have Hillary elected. While I can understand punishing the seating of the delegates I do not agree that the popular vote of ALL Americans should not be heard. I for one will be voting for McCain in November as a means to teach the DNC a lesson about letting every persons vote be heard. Bottom line. We all know that if Florida and Michigan were counted then the race would still be up to either candidate. I urge you to teach the DNC a lesson and vote for McCain.

Great! Now she has her wealthy bully supporters making threats to the Democrats if they don't support her in trying to "bamboozle" this election.

Now it seems a bit peculiar that Pelosi is backing down on her once direct statment of the superdelagates voting with the popular vote.

I guess there one thing that speaks louder than the voters. The sound of the Wealthy financial backers of our "elected" officials threatening to cut them off.

This stinks! This is why we need Obama…our goverment can not continue to be bullied and manipulated by the likes of this type of power hungry people.

That's right Hillary. Show America how much integrity you have by using your ultra-rich elitist friends to strongarm and threaten elected officials. Let's turn America into the Soviet Union. How could someone not respect you? (sarcasm…lots of it. Boy, she's pathetic… ;)

I think perhaps I will boycot this man's movies….

Bring Unity not Divide and Conquer   May 8th, 2008 11:54 am ET

it's funny how clinton supporters claim that it's obama's fault for this whole michigan and florida thing. he played by the rules and removed his name from the ballot in mi, and did not campaign in both states. hillary broke party rules and left her name on the ballot. it's easy to win when you're the only one on the ballot, and people voted for you because your husband was a president. you can't bully your own party to change the rules and i think pelosi was right for not taking your crap. if you stayed off the ballot in michigan and didn't threaten the DNC in the first place, there would have been a revote. it's too late in the game to let these states count when it would waste valuable time in the GE. split the delegates 50/50 and call it a day.

nice. And they say Obama is an elitist. Clinton's backers are trying to bully her into presidency. That shows the character of Clinton's supporters. Figures.

and who is he to overturn the popular voters of this great nation except a elitist with deep pockets who has economic interes in making sure Clinton wins..why..could it mean more money in his pocket surely not in the best interest of the nation.

vli   May 8th, 2008 11:55 am ET

I think Pelosi has changed her tone. I think she realizes that Obama cannot win the General Election with all the Combined information that links him to an extreme radical left.

Democrats like me will not vote for him based on that alone…Additionally, he has no credentials…Go Figure!!!

Democrats voting for Obama are going to be the Demise of the Party if they don't wake up

ELM   May 8th, 2008 11:55 am ET

I hate to say this. But the only Democrat who is capable of running a successful campaign without losing his moral principals is Obama.

Both DNC and Clintons have made too many wrong decisions, display questionable ethics, feed us with endless spins and blame everyone else but their weaknesses.

In all, they still continue to exhibit very poor management and leadership skills.

John B. From New Hampshire   May 8th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Darryl Thompson   May 8th, 2008 11:56 am ET

This really sucks! Threats of withholding money unless the DNC and Pelosi change the democratic rules to favor Clinton is the typical approach of well funded lobbists who put their interests ahead of the American people.

Don't do it Pelosi!!!

Keep Your Money, Harvey!   May 8th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Harvey, keep your money! We don't need someone who thinks they can overcome all existing rules and all previous agreements by threatening the Speaker! Get lost!

Hillary previously agreed, just like everyone else, that the primaries in Florida and Michigan were not going to count.

Pelosi needs to show this guy the door.

Billy Gibbons in Houston   May 8th, 2008 11:56 am ET

This is scary stuff.
Rich people trying to buy the Speaker of the House of Representatives so a State vote counts?

If true, this is a scandal of greater magnitude that even Teapot Dome. We are not talking about money to a secretary of the interior for oil lands, this is about money to subvert the 3rd in line to the Presidency about counting State votes.

This is a HUGE SCANDAL. How dare someone even attempt this!

JRC   May 8th, 2008 11:56 am ET

A lot of her supporters are willing to "finance" a revote, most notably Carville and Rendell. I wonder if her supporters are financing the results as well.

If Pelosi "embraces" this now she's no better than the rest of the dirty politicians out there. It's this kind of back room politics that convinces me even more that we need a change in Washington and that change is not going to come from Clinton.

John McHenry   May 8th, 2008 11:57 am ET

The Democrats should learn that the more they try to take Obama through the trenches the more they push me as a REPUBLICAN to Vote for A Democrat this year. I'm only 37 years Old and I WISH OBAMA was a REPUBLICAN. I'm Proud to call myself OBAMACAN;
Joh McCain is a TRUE REPULICAN but he is OLD. This is the time to turn the country to the NEW GENERATION and OBAMA represents ALL PEOPLE OF THE NEW GENERATION. PELOSI LET YOUR FAT CATS GO. YOu CAN FINANE your Party on The RULE OF LARGE NUMBERS THE WAY OBAMA HAS CONDUCTED HIS CAMPAIGN

Dolores Viverette   May 8th, 2008 11:57 am ET

When I read things like this, I feel that the Democratic nomination is "for sale". Either Hillary will buy the nomination for herself, with her millions now and "pay herself back " when she's the President or she'll have people like Weinsein buy it for her. This corruption in the Democratic Party will cause people like me, who have never voted Republican in the past, to actually vote Republican in the Fall if the will of the people is overturned by back room politics.

Mike   May 8th, 2008 11:57 am ET

It's expected, of Hllary's group and her contributors they are trying to pull out all of the stops…this is just palin exstortion, no matter how you spin it is what it is EXSTORTION….

tony   May 8th, 2008 11:57 am ET

this is a good example of who's really in charge… Clinton, and her supporters are everything that America is not about.. and now her next to last trick is out right race card. Pelosi, more than ever must now prove herself to the American people… and vote her convictions, if it is Obama, or Clinton she should do it now. Weinstein, will lose when the Clinton machine meets its timely death, it is clear that he is a great part of their machine and must be destroyed.

bonalyonga   May 8th, 2008 11:57 am ET

If this is true, I must be very sorry for the democratic party.

KJ   May 8th, 2008 11:58 am ET

Good for Speaker Pelosi standing her ground and principles on not letting Mr. Weinstein intimidate her with his demands. I cannot believe the arrogance of this person after reading the article.
Can we please just put the Michigan and Florida "re-vote" behind us because both Senator Clinton and O'Bama understood the rules the DNC made months ago and the both of them agreed to it. Of course now that Senator Clinton is not going to be the nominee and she has known this for months, she wants to change the rules. I admire Politicians like Speaker Pelosi who are not influenced by a person's "status" in this country…..

Tim   May 8th, 2008 11:58 am ET

I hope Americans wake up and see what kind of person Clinton is. This is the type of people that are trying to put her in power, because obviously Clinton will be doing favors for him. Again, Clinton is trying to buy her way into the White House. She is revolting…I bet if America could vote again, it would be very different. I still don't know how a politician can lie over and over about something such as the sniper fire incident. If she can lie so freely about that, what else is she lying about? Obviously the tax break on gas is a load of it…But she doesn't want to listen to experts.

Please people wake up and let's end this already!

Boycott Weinstein…

It's kinda funny to see a lot of Hillary's supporters act like her!

This race is over! Maybe Harvey is doing this to save face!

Anyway - it's time for us to come together and get behind Obama!

It's time to heal and get ready to beat Mc Cain and his supporters!

Keep going Hillary! Yes, this race is over but the last primary is June 3, 2008 and every vote we get will be a blessing! While you are at it - turn your attention to Mc Cain!

Obama supporters - let's pull back our attacks from Hillary and Bill Clinton - we are still in the same party and we will need the Clintons and their supporters to beat Mc Cain!

kia   May 8th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Stop Crying Hillary Supporters, This race is over. You can't act like Bush just cause you all lost. Have some dignity and support Obama now, while there is a chance you all might look good to public ( normal people who are suffering everyday) once a gain.

Kristine Louisville, ky   May 8th, 2008 11:59 am ET

This is exactly what obama is talking about! Same old dirty politics. Trying to buy an election. Pelosi needs to have a spine. Have some principles and don't fall to this deal. I see now why Pelosi says the race must go on. Pelosi can be bought too. The Obama camp needs to watch their back because the rug is going to be jerked out from under their feet. Remember this is the Clintons……people have died that knew too much about them. Wake up people…..

Jeff   May 8th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

He will be the voice of the people - not the voice of insiders like Hillary is.

No one should pressure Hillary to quit. Every vote counts. FLA and MI should count. When every state has finished voting , then is over. It's the way democracy works. The party is divided and calling for Hillary to quit, is not helping. If they do that to Obama , there would be demonstration sagainst it. and calling racism. Let's be fair and balance. We are hurting the party.

GOOD FOR HIM! SOMEONE NEEDS TO CHALLENGE PELOSI! SHE'S THE WORST OF THE WORST. FURTHER, IT'S NOT UP TO HER WHETHER OBAMA AND CLINTON END UP ON THE SAME TICKET. WHO DOES SHE THINK SHE IS? IN ADDITION, IT MUST BE UNCONSTITUTIONAL FOR THE DEMOCRATS TO DISALLOW ANY STATE VOTES DURING A MAJOR PRIMARY FOR A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. IT'S ALL STUPID. THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS SO SCREWED UP; IT'S PITIFUL THAT ADULTS MAKE SUCH RIDICULOUS AND STUPID DECISIONS AND RULES! THEY ALL ACT LIKE THEY'RE IN HIGH SCHOOL.

On Borrowed Time, Atlanta, GA   May 8th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Mr. Weinstein should remember that a great many of those who patronize his films are the very folks who support Obama's candidacy. If he wants to create a backlash against him by threatening the Speaker in this manner, then by all means continue to cary water for Sen. Clinton's campaign. I think it is the feigned altruism over voter disenfranchisement that is the most bothersome component of the Clinton argument to seat the Florida and Michigan delegates. Where was her fervor when the decision was being made and she was agreeing to exclude those states from her campaign. Incredible!

Nikki   May 8th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

The BULLYING, BLACKMAILING and THREATENING method - the next phase in the Clinton election tactic.

Lee Chang   May 8th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

I think Sources should keep innuendo to yourself. I agree with Pelosi, what harm can it do to Obama if Obama is winning. He should be very happy to have the fight go on. If he still wins, he is the better candidate, if he loses, he should'nt have been there in the first place. and the Democratic Party will have the strongest candidate.

Obama supporter

Carolyn   May 8th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Huh, you mean politicians are influenced by money? Who knew?! Shocking that it's a Clinton supporter. Walk away Nancy - look at the money Obama raised online from small supporters…the money appears to be there, don't get bullied.

Ohio Observer   May 8th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

I think Harvey Weinstein should be thrown in jail for what is effectively an attempted bribe.

Michelle, Indiana   May 8th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

If the supers do their job, threats like this will be a mute point. For the good of the party and this country, it's time the superdelegates removed the fence polls from their backsides and do what they were chosen to do - make a decision. They can put an end to this, but fearing repercussions, they won't do that. I think they need to look at the fact that their fear of making a decision brings their re-electability into question. Who wants a politician that can’t make a decision even with most of the facts already in and a clear choice to be made? If they can't take a little criticism for their choices, then they should not be in politics.

Molly Weasley   May 8th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

These Clinton supporters are getting selfish and delusional. And Democratic office holders are getting angry, because donors have to keep giving to the Clinton and Obama campaigns, and they can't raise any money.

It's time to be positive and accept the inevitable. Support Obama, the Democratic nominee, and see what role Hillary Clinton might have in an Obama administration. VP? Cabinet post? Let them work it out and move on to challenging John McCain, who would be a disaster for the country.

Ted, Florida   May 8th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Threatening to withhold contributions sounds like the old politics of arm-twisting. Some things apparently never change. What is different is hearing about it close to the time when it actually occurred (or is alleged to have occurred).

Regardless of what many posters may think of CNN (and no, I did not get a request from CNN to post this), there is a genuine public service to informing us of these kinds of backroom dealings. We need to know, because it tells us more about the kind of potential administration we might be dealing with, were the candidate in question to be nominated and elected.

This is the kind of story we need more of, because it tells more about ethics than just reporting the race for superdelegates. There is something sophomoric about focusing on these individuals who can do whatever they want to do, when they want to do it, so far as casiting a vote goes, up to the time they cast their ballots on the floor of the Democratic National Convention in Denver late in August.

Thank you, CNN!

Why should Obama be denied what he has earned fairly, just because Clinton and her supporters feel that she is entitled to be president, because she is riding off the coat tails of her husband. Why didn't Hillary protest or even file a law suit against the DNC a year and half ago before signing that form stating that the votes and delegates would not count or be seated at the convention, this question should be answered and explained by Hillary to her supporters, why she signed and sit by and allowed it and never spoke up before for those voters and delegates, until now only because she needs those delegates in order to try to compete with Obama now. How come when she was in the leader spot those votes & delegates didn't matter but , now they are so deserving of being heard. She says in front of cameras that she will support the Dem candidate who wins but that only apply if shes the winner!!!!!!!!

Shelly Lee   May 8th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

Ok, now I am really going to puke.
So Hillary has her "people" making threats?
MI and FL BROKE THE RULES that Hillary supported in the beginning! They are paying the consequences for breaking those rules!
Now that she is desperate for votes, she swings back on her words just so she can benefit. How lame and shameful! No self-respect

I will not vote for a Democrat if the report is true. Hollywood buying the access with their filthy money will be a great story for the Dems.

I call for all Democrat supporters to voice our distain on this practice. Write your letters to blogs, to media, and to Pelosi, tell them we will not vote for a Dem if Pelosi indeed cave to the pressure.

This goes to show how weak the DNC heads are money is not all Hill have already sold her soul and Pelosi, no wonder people are relunctant for a woman president they are too week, they bow to pressure. If Clinton and her wealthy cronies special interest think for a second that they can use there money to get this nomination to go there way they have another guess coming.

Whatever you are destined for you will have to get and Barak was destined to be president. Put that in your pike and smoke it.

Obama 08-12.

Set of theives you all are.

I'm not sure what to call this, but I find it highly improper when a supporter attempts to buy off a politician to changer her position.

Weinstein and the others should be ashamed of themselves.

Good for Pelosi for standing up for herself. I hope Clinton has the courage to contact these supporters and demand they stop their improper behavior.

This stinks to high heaven! Threats of withholding money unless the DNC and Pelosi change the democratic rules to put Clinton in the White is the typical approach of well funded elitists who put their interests ahead of all the American people who aren't like them, RICH.

Don't sell us out Ms. Pelosi!!!
