Barack Obama targeted McCain Friday.
Barack Obama targeted McCain Friday.

BEAVERTON, Oregon (CNN) – What just a week ago was a joint attack on Hillary Clinton and John McCain over the proposed gas tax holiday is now just an attack on McCain — in fact, nowhere in his opening words did Barack Obama utter the word "Clinton."

"McCain," on the other hand, was tossed out nine times in the prepared comments.

The Illinois senator called the presumptive Republican nominee "dead wrong" when it comes to comments he made about the economy under the Bush administration, and he even took a swipe at McCain's healthcare plan — an issue that has not traditionally been used as a means to contrast himself from the Arizona senator.

"John McCain wants to continue a George Bush approach that only takes care of the healthy and the wealthy," Obama said.

During a question-and-answer session, however, Obama was asked what he thought about the idea of picking Clinton as his running mate. The White House hopeful repeated his standard response: that he has "not won this nomination yet" and that the two Democrats are still "actively running."

"She is very smart, and so I think she would be on anyone's…short list of vice presidential candidates," Obama said. "But beyond that I don't want to offer an opinion."

You have to give Obama credit. At least his socialist view on healthcare is up front. That same view on the economy will devastate and erode our financial stature in the world community for years.

Freddy   May 9th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

It's amazing. The only reason he is going to get the nomination is because they are gonna hand it to him so not to upset the African-American voters who already have said they will not vote or riot if the "brother" don't get in. I don't care what color he is. He doesn't have the knowledge, the drive, the general know-how to run this country. He has been given everything to him his whole life.

We might as well give him the Presidency….don't want to upset anyone now….do we?

Obama was very gracious to McCain. I live in AZ and McCain is not well liked. Article in local paper today told of McCain getting kickbacks from developers for "land switches" up in Prescott. Not the first time McCain's been crooked. Obama has mentioned the "Keating 5″ when McCain should have gone to jail!

Frank   May 9th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Democrats don't deserve to have a capable leader like Hillary Clinton. Let them remain ignorant and stupid. Hillary Clinton should run as an independent, and then we'll see what will happen!!! She will have the support of 50% of Democrats, the Independents, the Republicans who are sick of their party beurocracy, and she will be in the White House in November!!! I wonder if that is not her "exit strategy"!

HSNP   May 9th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Sen. Obama's supporters would be wise to take a look at other recent elections, just in case they're too young to remember. The Democratic nominee should carry most large metropolitan areas. The Republican nom CAN carry the huge swath of rural America. The rural vote can overcome the metro vote, and has again and again. Ask John Kerry and Al Gore.

They should be cautious in the regional elitism they spout. Al Gore would have taken the Presidency if they had carried Arkansas or West Virginia.

Just because you live in filthy, crime ridden (but fun, I've been to many) cities, don't down us because we live with trees, wildlife, clean water and air. YOU JUST MIGHT LOSE AGAIN!!!!!!!!

Senator Clinton remains the best candidate for the job. Mr Obama has smothered folks with his smooth speeches. Mr McCain is no fool, and will give him what he deserves-to be put in his place because of the person he pretended to be, and now, the person we gradually found out that he really is.

Okay, CNN, we understand your devotion to Mr Obama. Hopefully this comment will be posted regardless.

He should not mention her name as he mentioned it in every sentence while in Indiana and NC, and she did not mention his name 1 time during the campaigning in those states. I have always been suspicious about "choir boys" who throw the brick and hides his hands, and someone else(HC) is blamed for negative campaign. Will write in HC in Nov. My conscience want allow me to vote for Obama. I am a black female who expects substance from an elected official.

Please do not pick Hillary for VP – it will contradict everything you and us Obama people stand for. She has shown herself to be a negative candidate who will say and do anything to get votes….. like her useless gas policy plot to win votes. DID NOT WORK! She barely squeezed a win in Indiana.

Hillary, like her supporters here, need a dose of reality-testing – she has lost now get over it. All of you and Lanny Davis can have your pity party, but the rest of us need to unite after our nominee.

Congrats Obama – the best person has won the nomination and he will become our president!

As much as I think Hillary would have made a truly great President at a truly critical time, I am ready to get behind Obama. Not sure how best to bring her doggedness, sense of the big picture, and experience to the Democrats' table. That will be needed to fend off that swift-boating other party.

His fathers real job in Kenya? Was he born because of Selma? How could Kennedy have brought his father to the US? What is the real theology of the church he attended for 20 years..How much drug use is he refering to in his book? Where is his typical white grandmother? What are his dreams for his fattherland, Africa? Will he push for reparations for Slavery? If Obama is the nominee, write in Hillary Clinton in November…

KY Democrat   May 9th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

The Democratic Party is so concerned with losing the Black vote that they are ignoring my vote and that of other white voters who are not swayed by the smooth talker.

The KY primary is later this month and yet everyone says Obama has won. So that means my vote does not count.

Obama will not get my vote because he is inexperienced, hypocritical, and is so persuasive that people do not see his negativity.

So I'm voting for Clinton in the primary. In November I will not be voting for Obama just to unite the Democratic Party. It seems my political party does not care about me and my demographic profile.

You know what, i can't stand the unfair treatments against Hillary. Obama can get the nomination the dirty way he wants with the help of the press. However, everyone from my family and I will not vote for him in the general election. We will instead vote republician. I believe many hillary supporters would do the same. I really want to see how Obama can win when half of Hillary's support vote republician. I guess at the end, justice will serve.

Lyle   May 9th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Mr. Obama just does not get it. He can criticize Mr. McCain until he turns blue, but it is clear that he is unelectable and cannot win the general election.

One must ask exactly what Mr. Obama’s goal is…is he simply trying to damage the Democratic party and make himself look like a fool, or does he want Mr. McCain elected President?

Winning the nomination is a cake walk compared to the general election and he will simply wither and fade away in the end. What he has done to his party and America is very sad.

Gerald from Hoboken   May 9th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Does he not still have a nomination to win at the convention? I see the convention as the place to win. I honestly think BO does not have a shot against JM.

Conservatives and Democrats (including this one) are going to vote JM over BO. The party is making a huge mistake nominating BO. He has 0 experience and no idea what he is getting himself in to.

That's right Senator Obama. The only people that seem to fear the

The fact that Obama has a small lead against Clinton proves that racism hasn't been the issue or a factor.

The issue is that many of us believe that Clinton is the better candidate and will make the better president.

Plain and simple.

No racism, no hate involved.

The vitriolic venom is spewing from the Obama camp and will work against their candidate. Hate is like that.

Zagazaw   May 9th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

My question to the Hillary supporters, what is it? Is it Hillary you like are is it Obama you Hate? Is your hate for Obama that stronger than you love for Clinton, that you are willing to destroy Hillary in order to get to Obama? GOD is Love, Satan is Hate.
Just incase you don't know. it's not the person who are being hate have the problem, rather it's the person who are doing the hating is evil. if God is love then the devil is hate. and hate always distroy, but most of all, the hater is the one that altimatly loose the most in the end, because they loose who they are.

Reading the Obama supporters comments, makes one realize that Obama and his followers will make our country the laughing stalk of the world. Just read the comments made by the Obama bandwagoniers and you will wonder where these people come from. They make Rev Wright words seem trivial compared to thiers. They talk so nasty of Hillary that it scare me to think that Obama could be our President with the attitude they display. And all these so called "super" delagates that flip flop thier support from one candidate to the next…

We can see how republicans beat him. Democrats will lose the general election for sure, if he is the nominee.
With skill and experience, Hillary could be a very good president, and can solve the current problems America is facing.

Also do you think you Mcsame Dems will try to ruin Baraks chances in Nov. and think that everyone will just forget about it if Hillary tries to run in 2012. Yeah right. She will not only have so many Republicans lining up to vote against her but all the Baraks supporters will come out in droves to make sure she will never win another election. She wont even be able to win a potatoe sack race let alone become the President of the US. Karma comes back 10x over for people like Hillary.

The DNC and Obama have destroyed our party and if Obama is on the democratic ticket because Hillary is getting the shaft then watch out in November. The dnc may not care about the florida voters while they are forcing Obama on us but I promise you they will care about us in November. If not Hillary, then McCain. NO OBAMA!

NewJeffCT   May 9th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

We have heard about McCain smearing Obama by claiming that Hamas wants Obama to win the election. That was widely reported in the media, even though Cindy McCain said her husband would never engage in negative campaigning.

However, when will the media report that Al Qaeda has strongly endorsed John McCain? It would be Sunni Al Qaeda’s dream that the US attacks Shi’ite Iran. Of course, McCain does not really know the difference between Sunnis and Shi’ites as it is, so what does he care as long as he gets to bomb, bomb, bomb Iran?

The rabid, unmitigated antipathy Obama and his supporters have shown towards Clinton and her supporters will follow him to the General Election.

What true democrat will vote for a candidate that mocks, jeers and demeans his own party's worthy opponent and continually demeans and insults her supporters?

Who wants that kind of small-minded, petty hatred to rule the white house?

The college educated Clinton supporters will not fall for it. Neither will their less fortunate lower income fellow democrats.

Obama should be careful. He is already perceived as being too ful of himself by many. If he dismisses Senator Cknton too early, he will risk losing many of her loyal supports if he becomes the nominee.

Ben - Portland   May 9th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

That's right. Eyes on the prize. Just don't flop in October like Dukakis, Gore, and Kerry…

But if he does, we'll just blame Hillary, like we've blamed the furlough ad, Nader, and the Swiftboat veterans. Stay in there, Hillary, so we can blame you for dividing the party if we loose. You'll be a great scapegoat and then in 2012, no one will give you the time of day…

Joyce in Florida   May 9th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

This just goes to show how egotistical Senator Obama is. He is already acting like he won the nomination. Therefore, he makes no mention of Hillary Clinton. Everybody calling him "Mr. President". Makes me feel like puking. I think everyone should wait and see how the remaining primaries turn out. We might get another surprise. I will still donate and support Hillary's campaign until the convention. I still believe in her and hope she will become the nominee. GO HILLARY 08!!!!!!!!

Bushwhacked in Eugene, OR   May 9th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Aside from being no reason to mention HRC since Oregon is an Obama state, he's wise to begin focusing his energies on McCain and the general.

AZM, I'd much rather see mud-slinging between the two parties than within two people in the Democratic party. McCain has been and will continue to do his share of mud-slinging in Obama's direction.

Uncle Sam, equating Hamas' endorsement of Obama with Bush's endorsement of McCain is as asinine and stupid and right-wing-idiocy bias as it gets. McCain and Obama are both running as a successor to Bush, if you haven't noticed. Hamas is irrelevant in this fight, as would be an endorsement from any foreign government, group, or individual.

Democrats Unite in November! A vote for Nader is a vote for McCain.

What does Obama stand for?

He agrees with Wright in substance and spirit- but still denounced him for political gain.

He claims he will talk to our enemies- but then denounces efforts to talk with Hamas.

He claims he is a uniter- but has divided the party by his willingness to play the race card and exploit the black vote to his gain.

Jason from Colorado   May 9th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Good move Obama, at this point, we might as well start focusing on McCain. Clinton can take West Virginia if she wants, who honestly cares? With the nomination over, it's best to just focus on the general now. The uniting can start now. All the way to the White House!

If it's not a Obama/Clinton tickets, the Democrats will lose come November. Hillary can pick whoever she would want as a VP because at least she has the experience to be President unlike Obama. I wouldn't mind Obama being VP so he could gain experience to be in the White House in 2012 or 2016. Obama on the other hand will have a good portion of Clinton supporters not vote for him, including all the conservatives, and to be perfectly honest.. All the people who would not vote for an African American simply because of the color of their skin. Think about it people. Bush was-not-really elected in 2000. In 2004, with the unpopularity of the war and everything, he STILL beat McCain. November isn't Dems just voting. You add all the conservatives, racists, etc. There is only way to win in Nov. Joint ticket!

"McCain (like Bush) supports the healthy and the wealthy?"

As usual–your coaches failed to put any facts (or reality) on you 3×5 crib notes. Here are a few for you:

Mr. Obama–the largest increase in children's health spending in the history of our nation–was led by Bush..and has been increased every year since he's been in office.

The largest "decentralization" of wealth in the past century—was led by Mr. Bush. There are more Americans living in prosperity today–than ever before–despite the current economic growth stabilization.

Much of Mr. Bush's tax legislation was aimed at leveling the playing field for owner's of small business (the largest single employment source in our nation) so they could be more competitive against mega corporations.

He could have done more. But his efforts on behalf of the disadvantaged, the helpless, and small entreprenuers–was certainly more beneficial than anything you have spoken of during this campaign.

It's like when your friend asks you if her pants make her look fat. You don't say yes! Sometimes you have to tell the little white lie to be nice to someone.

I can't wait for Barack to officially secure the nomination so that everyone will be able to focus on the true differences between himself and McCain. Once that occurs, I find it hard to believe that Hillary's supporters would vote for McCain over Barack. The differences between Hillary and Barck are so minimal when ompared to the differences between Hillary and McCain. If Hillary's supporters are truly about what is best for the country, they will rally around Barack when all is said and done.

Obama, you're an empty suit! Go home and come back in 15 years!.

I am willing to bet a lot of money that – that's what Hillary wants now!

Obama – don't give Hillary nothing – but a kick to the curb!!!

She's too nasty considering all things!

Just stay focus on Mc Cain – let Hillary play with her supporters and James Carville!

David Goldman for OBAMA   May 9th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HILLARY.

SHE DISCREDITS HERSELF.

Felly   May 9th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Obama is smart. He is the real deal.

President Obama!

Phil-Little Rock   May 9th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

I'm a staunch Obama supporter, but he's playing coy for a reason: let her get out there and work to undo the damage she's started with the negativity.

Then kick her fat, wide behind to the curb.

proud army and navy mom   May 9th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

is the media obsessed with Hillary? she's irrelevant.. let it go already

Now that Obama is in command and too sure of the nomination, McCain is tossed. All polls will proof that. McCain does not know economy. McCain flip flops, changes mind every hour.
