Mark Sanford poses for a picture with President Bush.

(CNN) – Mark Sanford might be considered a vice presidential prospect by some, but the South Carolina governor won’t be appearing with John McCain when the presumptive Republican nominee arrives in the Palmetto State on Friday.

Sanford, a member of the Air Force Reserves, has reserve duty on Friday, a commitment that will keep him far away from McCain’s press conference in Columbia this afternoon.

Joel Sawyer, a spokesman for the governor, said Sanford’s wife Jenny will attend the McCain press conference as well as a big-ticket fundraiser in Columbia later in the day.

Despite the vice presidential speculation surrounding Sanford nationally, several McCain insiders in the state have privately downplayed the likelihood that he will tap Sanford, a staunch fiscal conservative, as a running mate.

McCain was asked about his vice presidential search process at a campaign event in New Jersey on Friday morning.

“There is a period where you just start looking at a large number of people,” McCain responded, “and we are still at that stage.”

Has anyone been following Sen. McCain's recent flip flop incident….in the past we have heard him and his wife say that in 2000 they did not vote for Bush…In fact Cindy said she had cast a ballot with a write-in for McCain…but the Straight Talk express (nowadays better known as the Doublespeak express) denied this on Bill O….he said that he in fact voted for Bush and campaigned for him all over the country in 2000 and 2004!

It is sad that a man who had our respect once upon a time, is now becoming a sad shadow of what he used to be!

Alfredo   May 9th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Yeah right.

The media is SO UNFAIR to Hillary. They need to realize that Hillary WON
Indiana. Obama is expected to win both Indiana and North Carolina since February. But, Hillary won Indiana and cut Obama's lead in North Carolina from 20% in February down to 14% in spite of ad overspending by Obama.

Wake up media people or wake up Obama-Media people. Hillary even won consecutively in Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvannia and now Indiana. Not to mention the other big states such as California, Arkansas, Florida (both not them are in the ballot) that are crucial in November. Hillary has the most electoral college votes based in these big states.

If you want a Democrat to win then Hillary should be the choice. African Americans are so unfair voting 9 to1 against Hillary not like the white people who fair and thinks who is the best candidate. Who is being racial now? This racial thing about Black has been OVERUSED, MISUSED and ABUSED by these people. Obama, the Obama camp, Clyburn, Wright and others can not fool us anymore. Stop this non-sense.

Wake up superdelegates! Wake up media people.

This will not get posted…Unless you support Obama you get excluded.
I will write in Hillary Clinton in November. All Clinton supporters do the same, we can show the Obama-bots the door. If the Hillary supporters write her name in we can do it. There are more of us and with the McCain, Nader and other voters, Obama will be toast and our girl or McCain can win..Yes we can….McCain is more of a Uniter then Obama will ever be..Like all the Obama-bots posting vile comments they can help our cause. Keep talking Al Sharpton..Not voting for Obama does not mean you are a racist.. WRITE IN HILLARY CLINTON IN NOVEMBER!!!!!!!!!!

according to this, Obama doesnt even qualify under the constitution

Only native-born U.S. citizens (or those born abroad, but only to parents who were both citizens of the U.S.) may be president of the United States, though from time to time that

i believe it says both parents, i highly doubt his father was a us
citizen, but i guess they have found away around that too

Well the Sharon from Minnesota is most definintely voting for McCain come November and he will be our next president, not Obama. Don't even believe your eyes in this blog. how come we can't talk about the manufactured reasons; gas is going to hit 4 dollars a gallon by memorial day. bush and his oil cartel always seem to have a reasons , to spike the price of gas. this is a cabal. you don't hear chavez calling bush a devil now. he's riding that bush opec 'gravy train' like the rest of them theives. there gonna bankrupt the united states and they don't even care. were in the middle of a war and bush and the V.P. make runs over to saudi arabi, who admits there is plenty of oil. never mind the blood being spilled for their [bushes and opec's] cause. this crushes the soul . i pray that god steps in real soon and show these folks thats making this world suffer and causing the divide in this world that its time to revere him. because the current world affairs will make you sick to the stomach.

The GOP is the ropes and would be better off regrouping and getting a fresh start with new leadership.

Sometimes your newspaper headlines try to say a different story. The words can't and won't have two different meanings. I believe that when Standford is stated as won't be present with McCain is should say can't or unable.

proud army and navy mom   May 9th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

hillary supporters sounds like republicans. If u walk like a duck, talk like a duck, you are a d*** duck. get over it

A.   May 9th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Democrats, we need to come together. You need to stop threatening to vote for John McCain. John McCain is going to try to overturn Roe V. Wade, he is going to keep us in Iraq and possibly go into Iran, he represents the failed policies of the Bush administration. Obama and Clinton have very similar views, their main difference lies in their personality.

Please don't vote for him out of spite, think logically.

pathetic   May 9th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

wow Darth Vadik…what a contribution…did they teach you that in college?…oh wait, Bill Clinton had an affair, so that means all democrats are having affairs…

a REAL American   May 9th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

A few quick questions for you Stacy Clarks– what makes abortion a "right"? Does that fetus have a voice to speak up? Why don't women who committ abortion exercise their "right to choose" when they're acting irresponsibly and getting knocked up? And before you start stammering about how abortion is for women who are raped or victims of incest, keep in mind that a very low proportion of total abortions are done under these circumstances.

Darth Vadik, what an intelligent posting. Your all-inclusive attitude speaks volumes of how concerned Obama supporters are about "uniting" this country.

Dave   May 9th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

I would be so impressed to see a thoughtfull and mature comment from an Obamite for once - one without petty name calling, without paranoid dellusions, and one without the empty slogans.

Please Obamites, define what "change" really means. Seems like back in the 1930's, the Germans wanted "change" without knowing what "change" really meant. Wow, did they and the rest of the world get it!!!!!

I doubt this post will make it since it doesn't fawn over Obama.

Don   May 9th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

The headline should have been, "Sanford to miss McCain visit due to Air Force Reserve duty". Your headline indicates there is a disagreement or issues between the men . . . and you say you not biased . . . Baloney.

CNN, why aren't you reporting on McCain's crooked land deal? McCain pushed for a 35,000 acre land swap that benefited one of his top fundraisers. This corruption and back-scratching is just another example of the old politics.

Sanford would be a great pick and he is from the South. Strong principals and has led his state well. He doesnt tread into the social issues but has made his mark in fiscal issues.

Twinkle Toes Mulligan   May 9th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Obama can't win without Clinton.

If Clinton is not on the ticket. I don't vote.

Independent   May 9th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Carolflowery -

Obama was born in part of the United States, making him "a native-born U.S. citizen." If he had been born outside the U.S., then both parents would have to be citizens for him to be a qualifying citizen. The "both parents" part is clearly only modifying "or those born abroad," hence the parentheses.

Andy J, NY   May 9th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

To Darth Vadik: News flash, pal- Democrats and Republicans are the same people. How can you not see that these parties have been hijacked by liars. Truthful politicians are the exception to the rule, especially when it comes to Democrats and Republicans.

How about you think for yourself and remove the spoon they use to feed you the mindless garbage you spew. But then again, you're probably a socialist and enjoy being fed by the government.

That goes for everyone else: Personal responsibility, fiscal conservatism, morals, hard work, and respect for our brothers and sisters. These are the things we should strive for. These are the ideas upon which America was built, and thats how you succeed in this country.

For those who continue to read that Sen. McCain is a warmonger or who are bombarded by DNC ads distorting his "100 years" remarks at a townhall meeting, the following are the words of Sen. Joe Biden in a recent television interview: "My fellow Democrats may not like to hear me say this but, I know John and he hates war and he would do everything he could to get us out of Iraq."

"

BARACK is a native-born U.S. citizens!!!

Apparently, McSame doesn't want a "a staunch fiscal conservative, as a running mate". It sure would be strange seeing a real fiscal conservative in the upper echelons of the [R] party power structure after the executive and congressional spending orgy of the last 8 years. Notice that I said 'real' —- these neo-nuggets talk a good game, just enough so the [R] lamebrain public will feel good about voting for them, but we've all seen what a crock they realy are. The proof is in the pudding — and you [R]s have proven yourselves to be abject failures at running this county.
