Clinton draws parallel between her campaign, JFK's 1960 run

Hillary Clinton compared her Campaign to JFK's Monday.'

(CNN) - Hillary Clinton said again Monday that no Democratic presidential candidate can win without a victory in West Virginia - and drew a parallel between her own campaign and John Kennedy’s 1960 White House run.

“It was West Virginia that made it possible for John Kennedy to become president,” Clinton said at a Clear Fork, West Virginia campaign stop. “Now, John Kennedy didn’t have the number of delegates he needed when he went to the convention in 1960. He had something equally as important - he had West Virginia behind him, because it’s a fact that Democrats don’t get elected president unless West Virginia votes for you…”

Barack Obama may be the party’s pledged and superdelegate leader – but that status does not appear to have helped him in West Virginia, where Clinton leads by 30-40 points in recent state polls.

“So I’m here today because I know what’s really going to matter tomorrow,” said Clinton. “It’s the votes of the people of West Virginia and if you will come out and honor me with your vote I will work my heart out for you.

Clinton criticized the Democratic front-runner on his health care proposal, and his rejection of her proposed “gas tax holiday.”

“My opponent Sen. Obama says, “Oh no, that’s just a gimmick, that’s not going to help people,” said Clinton before again arguing that it will save families $70 on average and more for those with longer commutes as well as truckers.

Clinton added that West Virginia proportionately has more veterans, “more people who have served in the conflicts and in the armed forces of the United States….

“It is the hard-working, dedicated people of West Virginia who have really made America what it has been, and what it will be again.”

I don't understand how someone could back Hillary Clinton today and then turn around and vote for McCain in the general election. For crying out loud Clinton and Obama agree on 90% of the issues. What are you people thinking???

McCain = 4 more years of Bush politics.

Just watched her speech in WV, anyone who doubts she's losing the plot now is as bonkers as she is. I seriously don't know whether to laugh or cry (out of pity).

Please Clinton supports if you care about her at all put out her out of her misery.

Apparently there are a lot of people out there that don't believe much and understand even less. If these comments are in any way a reflection of the US at large, it is a wonder we maintain our place as a superpower.

Dems threatening to vote Republican if their sniper dodging candidate doesn't get nominated? Do they understand this is not a high school popularity contest. What about the issues. One's for the war, the other supposedly against. One's pro-life, the other is supposedly pro-choice. One's for the upper-echelon, the other is supposedly for "the people". What about taxes, immigration and health care? Are you serious?

Maybe it is not so hard to understand how someone who it has become extremely hard to take serious has a following.

  7. Old white mom for Obama

She ducked the sniper fire and JFK couldn't. How dare her to even mention herself with Jfk with all of the lies she has told. And how much blood and death she has on her hands with the Iraq vote. Do you know the song that says "you've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything". Don't vote for Hillary.

You know what I dont understand? Is how Hillary supporters say they would vote for McCain over Obama.
    1) Obama and Hillary have similar platforms
    2) Obama is one of the most honest politicians I've seen to date
    3) Hillary Clinton is not
    4) Its time for change
    5) Democrats have to unite around Obama, he will be the nominee, its time to unite

Since most of Hillary supportors don't finish college. I bet they won't be able to read this comment; but if you support her for some racist reasons, I hope you are proud when you look at yourself in a mirror. Can you tell me why as a democrats, you will not vote for the only decent black man out there?

The Clintons are the ones who brought the Reagan supporters into the democratic party. They were not here when Carter was president.

Its very true. No democrat has won the presidency without west virginia in well over 100 years. Whether you Obama lovers like it or not.

Liberals rarely get elected, and then NEVER stay in power long. This is why JFK put LBJ on the ticket.

  11. Republican for Obama

As a Republican I don't like McCain but at least his stand on issues closely models mine. I don't get how childish you Democrats are about your candidate not winning. The contest is nearly 50/50 but Obama has the edge. Sure you can be immature and vote McCain out of spite even though Clinton and Obama are nearly identical on issues. But remember this if Clinton had that slight edge and all the Obama supporters said the same thing as you, Clinton could not win in November either. With the party split McCain is a shoe in and we are destined for 4 more years of this crap we are stuck in. GROW UP!

Trust me; there's no semblance whatsoever between Hillary and John Kennedy, no semblance at all. In fact, you could include Bill in that equation too.

HOW about this as an astounding new news turnover, for all you Clinton supporters. Let us say Sen. Hillary couldn't win WV for a really strange reason. Would you line up behind Obama?

Obama band wagon and DNC pundits,
Don't forget Liberman. The way DNC is throwing HRC under the bus, she deserves to get off the DNC bus and run as an independent...will see what Obamaites will do then to win.
US Presidency is not an apprenticeship.

  20. Reality

If winning WV is the key to winning the presidency and the primaries are somehow a predictor of who will win WV in the general election, then the democrats are going to win no matter who they nominate– McCain only won 1% of the WV vote in the republican primary!! So Hillary, your twisted, backwards logic leads to only one conclusion: Tuesday means nothing. Stop attacking our nominee.

Hillary hasn't checked her history very thoroughly. In 1968, 1976, 1980, and 1988, the loser of West Virginia won the Presidency. Yes Hillary, you can lose WV and still win the White House.

i still remember the words of president Clinton in a lecture at the Royal Albert Hall London United Kingdom in 2006. Then he said: "keep building that bridge". I would like to believe that the President is still sincere about building a bridge that will bring people together. But he seems to be failing in getting Hillary across the bridge to help keep people together.

    FASHION STATEMENT?????

Has anyone bothered to take a look at the clothes Hillary wears? Some are mix matched with tacky jewlery, and she wears alot of the same outfits over and over again. Now, on the other hand...look at Ms. Obama and Ms. McCain how professionally, well dressed they ALWAYS are. If Hillary, by accident, becomes the president, I sure hope they have a fashion designer on hand to give her some much needed advise if she is to represent our country looking the way a leader should look. Look at women leaders in other countries... their attire is much more appropriate and professional that Hillary's.
