An Obama supporter and Tennessee congressman is comparing Clinton to Glenn Close in 'Fatal Attraction.'

(CNN) - Several of Barack Obama's supporters have publicly urged Hillary Clinton to withdraw from the presidential race, but Tennessee Rep. Steve Cohen was especially blunt.

Speaking to a Memphis TV station over the weekend, Cohen compared Clinton to Glenn Close’s character in the movie "Fatal Attraction."

Close played an obsessed and mentally unstable woman who refused to end an affair with a married man, despite his repeated urgings. In the movie’s final scene, Close's character appears to have drowned in a bathtub, but re-emerged before getting fatally shot.

"Glenn Close should have stayed in that tub, and Sen. Clinton has had a remarkable career and needs to move to the next step, which is helping elect the Democratic nominee," Cohen said.

Cohen's office released an apology from the congressman soon after he made the comments.

"I sincerely apologize for the comments I made about Senator Clinton's campaign," he said in the statement. "I have great respect for Senator Clinton as a US Senator. She has waged an historic campaign which has done much to break the glass ceiling. My comments obviously do not reflect the sentiments of Senator Obama or the Obama campaign. Nor do they reflect my opinion of Senator Clinton whom I have known for years and admire. My hope is that our party will come together to work to defeat John McCain."

Cohen endorsed Obama on February 4, one day before the Super Tuesday contests.

If BHO "happens" to be the democratic nominee and come November when I go to my precinct to vote, I'll not only be voting against BHO, but against all the men and women, pundits, the Chris Matthews', Olberman's, Russert's, (too many to name here) of the world. We will send them a message and they should know what the message is if they are so smart!

FM   May 12th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

One thing for all Obama "maniac's", (including politicians and super delegates) to remember: He (Obama) will need the Clinton backer’s votes in November. All of the rhetoric and brainless chatter is not creating a lot of good will. I for one and I sure hope there are so many more like me out there, will not do so. After eight years of Bush, I can take 4 years of McCain. Clinton will be available in four years, but if Obama loses the general election this November, he definitely won’t be. So, keep it up, and we’ll talk again in four years.

Why apologize? He's right!

I think Steve Cohen needs to be checked in in to a psychiatric facility. Comparing Hillary Clinton to a deranged actress in a movie? I don't think so. I think he must spend way too much time watching that movie...over and over.

I think that Hillary's cause is noble and that her courage and fortitude will pay off...BIGTIME!

She's the Democratic party's only hope. Can you imagine anyone with 2 years experience running this county? Preposterous!!!!!!!

Pauline   May 12th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Once again, the misogyny lurking behind the Obama campaign rears its ugly head! Such comments of hatred from Cohen and such condescension from Obama, who recently said women supporters of Hillary would have "bruised feelings but would come along" to his side, are slaps in the face to women all over this country. Here's a newsflash to Obama and his supporters: you can't win without women's support, especially white women over 50. And the more you insult Hillary, the more you act like just another ambitious, sexist man, the more you lose women's votes. The Democratic party is making a tragic error when it acts as if women's votes can be taken for granted but African American votes can't. Without Hillary and without women's support, Obama will lose in November. Hopefully someone will talk some sense into him or give him a pill for his hubris!

face it   May 12th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Anyone in politics knows this much:

Obama was running just for visibility and to let voters come to know him. He would then have been the VP choice for Hillary.

But Obama tried to fast track himself and got greedy and went for the gold ring.

He did not care if this hopelessly fractured the democratic party and did not care if that mean't a loss in Nov.

So blame selfish Obama.

I just read of Cohen's "Glen Close" comment re: Senator Clinton. Senator Clinton is my senator and I hold her in high regard.
His comment was ugly, mysogynistic and does indeed reflect the general attitude of Sen. Obama and his supporters toward Hillary.

This remark and so many similar ones bubbling up from the press and the Obama camp are but a few of the reasons I am seriously considering, for the first time, leaving the Democrats for Independent status. I certainly won't contribute any more money to the DNC or the DNCC.

I look forward to learning Cohen's opponent in the upcoming campaign and if he or she is at all palatable, contributing to his defeat.

Finally, I've had my fill of Democrats trashing the Clintons and the President's two terms. If Democrats felt he was a liability in office, they had plenty of opportunities to defeat his proposals, mount a challenge to his re-election and to vote to impeach and remove him from office. They didn't because either they needed his fund raising skills or his coattails too badly. Then, in 2000, they complained the VP Gore didn't use Mr. Clinton enough! What a sad collection of hypocrites and fair weather friends.

Cohen should be ashamed of his comments.

I'm a Clinton supporter and I think it will be time for Hillary to leave after the last state has been counted. But I also think the Obama supporters should give her a break. She was the first serious woman candidate and it wasn't easy. They both deserve kudos for what they did.

America 08

CW in DC   May 12th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

I am dismayed and can only shake my head at the comments I'm reading from both sides of the camp. It's plain to see that it isn't the candidates that are dividing the Democratic party, it's the supporters. The end to the primaries will bring great sadness because it's not enough we look at Iran, Israel, China, Myanmar, Darfur, and other countries and see the kind of infighting and separation that tears those countries apart. How are we any different than them if we are to call ourselves a nation that wants to lead. We're pouring humanitarian support and money into countries but have tornadoes, storms, and other disasters ripping through our own country. To state the obvious AMERICAN people are dying folks?!?! Not black, not white, not Hispanic, not Mexican – AMERICANS. Not just here but abroad in a senseless war that many of you are willing to cast your vote for someone who wants to continue it and do it out of spite and revenge. I talked to an uncle over the weekend who is a Vietnam war vet and the comparisons he placed between Iraq and Vietnam made my mouth go dry. I will fight tooth and nail, if in 14 years my son is being called up to fight a war we have no business being in. Clinton supporters – do you feel that way about your child/children?

It's no wonder we're the laughing stock and epitome of hypocrisy in the eyes of other countries. LOOK AT US ON THESE BLOGS!! I remain hopeful, even as there are those who think that hope means nothing. I am hopeful that we call can come together and take this country back and make it 'BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE'. The first line of the constitution for those that didn't know.

Democratics let's take on John McCain and the Republicans (Our real Enemies)

Don't be sour Clinton supporters get behind Sen. Obama in support of a Democratic White House this fall. Don't let your antipathy/prejugdice/bigotry blind you and aide the Republicans in Bankrupting this nation.

Randy M   May 12th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

No question Cohen's statement was out of line but to attack Obama for it is ludicrous. Hillary and friends have bashed Obama on virtually everything from intelligence to race. I have no problem having a woman in the White House but NOT this woman. She is polarizing, devisive and more than a little dishonest. The annointed one has been defeated people. She ran a lousy campaign and spent her money foolishly. If she can't manage a campaign how on earth do you expect her to run our nation.

Stop wasting your time and money. Obama will be the nominee and there is NO WAY she'll be the VP. And that IS her fault, for the way she's campaigned.

The true democrats will unite for change.

Hillary supporters should quit w/ the bitter pills, and think about what a vote for McCain will do for their own future. Some of these comments show what 'poor' losers sound like.

If you want to reverse Roe v. Wade al in the name of your support for a 'woman' President, proceed with your bitterness and support of McCain.

If you want your kids to go to Iraq to fight a pointless war, proceed with your bitterness and support of McCain.

Get informed. Support change and a vote to improve our current state of affairs.

OK maybe is now time for the ol' zipper check ...OK boys...one two three-check-is IT (the little guy behind the zipper) still there after a strong woman has been fighting hard for what she wants and believes this country deserves??? Geez. This is what turns me off about Obama–his crazy supporters. I have said all along, I will vote for Obama if he gets it, but things like this are making me think twice now. I am digusted with the oh so superdelegates–Obama's under the radar sexist salms and snake oil salesman pitches, Obama supporters spending more time on tearing down a woman who has spent her life in working hard for change and the Democratic party than on McCain or even on stating why we should support their candidate-you wanna talk crazy... Sexism is so accepted in this country-powerful women are so scary....again-do a zipper check guys and get past the castration fears-

MIscreant   May 12th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

That Senator Clinto would continue to spend her own money on an obviously losing cause is interesting. How do we think she would spend tax payers hard earned money if she were president.

smokesignals   May 12th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Aw, come one. She's virtually asking for these kinds of attacks. Anyone with an ounce of dignity and sense of purpose, along with the best interests of the party, would be out of this race now. As distasteful as it is, it did NOT come from Obama himself.
The same comparison had already been drawn by others. It's just too obvious.

For the love of this independent   May 12th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Let's stop before to far. Hillary plays the gender openly. Many of her speeches call for girl power, time for a woman to be in the white house, etc. However I wonder if she will use this.

When Obama was called a snake oil salesman and a boy, he let it go and did not let it become an issue.

Will Hillary do the same or use it as another rallying cry to get more women support.

I know many women believe that Hillary is your best shot at the presidency. But Obama came out of nowhere and I am sure the is another woman out there somewhere with the same appeal.

Barbara-California   May 12th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Very Agressive Behavior......that is the description of everything that Hillary does and says.....does this describe the temperment of most women in the United States? I say no.

Then why are so many women voting for her? It is because, the women themselves hope for equality in pay, in jobs and yes, even positions in Washington. They would vote for Imelda Marcos if she were running, and believe me, Imelda Marcos was a thief.....if the shoe fits......wear it!

JPR   May 12th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Try the Meryl Streep character in the Manchurian Candidate (version with Denzel W.). Hillary reminded me of her way back last fall with her persona of lies and corruption.

Go check it out. I can't believe people can't see how unbelievably power-hungry Hillary is. Do they think she became Seantor of NY to help the people of NY? Anyone who thinks so is confused, at best.

I cannot believer the way Obama supporters were talking regarding people in West Va. and Ky on one of the comments section the other day. My Dad was a coal miner from Ky., we lived in Va.,which our county went for Hillary by the way, and after he retired from Bethlehem Steel after 35 years in the coal mines, he put sprinkling systems in coal mines in West Va. Let me see some of you young Obama supporters walk one mile in his shoes. The people in those areas are hard working, honest people who have a very good education. I think we should listen to them because they know what they are doing by supporting Hillary. People following Obama are pathetic by blindly letting him lead you to the slaughter. This may be the first time someone in my family vote Republican. At least McCain fought for his country.

Christine   May 12th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

And it is these comments that are part of the reason Clinton supporters will vote McCain. If the Obama supporters think they win the election without us, they are in for a big surprise.Even if Clinton asks her supporters to back Obama, I will not. Why? I don't agree with his views.

Jo   May 12th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Rep. Cohen has a primary opponent by the name of Nikki Tinker. She probably supports Obama also but at least has the sensitivity to be polite. I think I will donate to her. Rep. Cohen words do matter and just because you are in a tough primary in a predominantly African American district does not require you to insult and demean Hillary Clinton to win the support of your district.

Letha, Sioux Falls, SD   May 12th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

So, who is waging the negative comment campaign? An Obamantion groupie, who is this man? He can compare Clinton to an insane person because Clinton wants to be fair and let everyone have a chance to vote. My state is one of the last to vote and how dare he say my voice doesn't count. It's those comments that will put McCain in office and it will have nothing to do with Clinton.

Matt, PA   May 12th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

As I have said before, the only reason that eveyone wants Hillary to drop out is because they are trying to bring out "the young voters". Not only that but because they know that when she does get the FL and MI delegates seated, she'll be ahead, and poor Mr. Obama will have to cry his eyes out while he's trying to think of how she planted him right in the ground...She can and will show everyone that she has the power and that shes the one driving the bus, and after its all over with, well, let's just say she'll know what to do on day one...VOTE HILLARY FOR PRESIDENT!!!

And I WON'Tvote for Obama if he gets the nomination, I'll vote for John Mccain.

W   May 12th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

This is an outrageous, sexist thing to say and I will be sending a donation to Mr. Cohen's opponent.

Obama and his supporters are dividers, not uniters, and this is just one more example of why Obama will not win in November. He and his advisors are divisive across all demographic groups.

Obama should drop out of the race now before he further divides the country, let alone the party.

Doug R.   May 12th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Fatal Attraction was an intense/ dramatic movie when it came out. I wonder whta Michael Douglas and Glenn Close think of this analogy...
What can we compare to the two faced, flip flopping John McCain to??

crat3   May 12th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Obama and his superdelegates are now maneuvring with an end run to prevent Sen Clinton from winning the nomination at the conclusion of the Democratic nomination process. This was the purpose of the superdelegate endorsements Friday, Saturday and Monday and this subversion will continue.

Obama and his superdelegates have chosen to take the Democratic Party down the path of a train wreck in November. This is entrenching votes for McCain. Obama will crash and burn in November if he swipes the nomination.

Marc Kharrat   May 12th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

It seems as if almost everyday someone in politics says whats on their mind and soon after release an apology for their comments. Why? What happened to freedom of speech and saying what you really want. Everyone has an opinion, we shouldn't disregard it for some comments that might not go well with everyone, especially in this case, if you are a Clinton backer or an Obama backer. Cohen is on the right track by stating that Clinton should be focusing on the next step, helping the Democratic nominee be elected, rather than another white old rich republican who has no interest in anyone else's beliefs and issues. If this was flipped, Obama should be helping the Democratic nominee get elected. What the democrats need to realize is that, in the end, they need to work together. Just by looking at the two Democrats, Obama (an african american) and Clinton (a woman), shows you that the Democrats are the first engage change in our rotting government. No matter what, this election is making history, as the first african american and woman to be running for president. I wish them both luck, we need change to see progress.

sherrie50   May 12th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Obama has taken the Black vote for granted, and I will not be moved as a Black female. I don't want a candidate patronizing me. Don't blame HC for the problems, but ask BO what will he do for the Black people who put him in power. The day will come as soon as he is in office. The answer is a resounding NOTHING.

Tom in Raleigh   May 12th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Amazing how Obama claims he will pull everyone together, yet his supporters and mentors are hateful, racist and discriminatory. Much of Obama's support comes from people that are intimidated, afraid they will be branded as racists if they oppose the black candidate. The rest comes from miltant thinking extremists who trash good Americans and anyone else who does not join their negative agenda. He is truly not "the same old politics". Obama is something much worse.

Joyce in Florida   May 12th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

If Rep. Cohen so respected Senator Clinton as he states above in his apology, he never should have said it in the first place. I believe he meant every word and was called on to apologize. What a disgrace that man is. This goes to show how negative and hateful the Obama campaign staff is on a daily basis. They are not stopping and are making the democratic party a joke. Hillary Clinton NEEDS to be the nominee so that Obama can go home and think about what he has done to our party. We don't want him campaigning in Florida because Hillary already won Florida. Does this mean that he will NOW count our votes from our primary of January 29th? I think not. His arrogance is showing LOUD and CLEAR and you will NOT see me at any of his stops. GO HILLARY 08!!!!!

Freida NYC   May 12th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

I'm not sure why Hillary is still in this race... I don't think her ego could really be that huge? Sad to see what's happening to her.

She's not even pushing the gas tax like she was last week....if it was so important... why isn't it important this week?

We can't come together with comments like these. Let's keep on shooting ourselves in the foot. This is the time to just let things play out and end graciously as they should. We should be mending fences with our fellow democrats not trashing them. If we don't we will lose in November and we will have deserved it.

Okay...   May 12th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

I hate to admit that was a funny comment; however; it was very inappropriate and he needed to apologize to Sen. Clinton. Even though she isn't going to end up being the nominee, she still deserves the respect of the American people as well as her colleagues. That was not a smart thing to say.

Are Hillary's supporters being so rude and so presumptive,as to ask Obama to leave the race, even though many of us think he can not possibly win against McCain in November? No! They act as if their 89%- 92% African- American block vote was going to affect the November election as dramatically as it has this Primary. Keep in mind, this block vote has only been as effective, as it has ,due to the disenfranchisement of Michigan and Florida, and the Caucus voting of several States, allowing ,only , the most radical and determined to caucus the State , and the adding of delegates to States who moved their races out farther ,which happen to be States predispositioned for Obama, allowing one State to vote twice(Texas voted and Caucused) with no restrictions dedicated to the voters of that State, and allowing superdelegates to vote contrary to their States decision. November is not going to be that disfunctional or generous. In November it boils down to Electorial votes.....end of story!

Steve Cohen is pathetic. With Obama supporters like this, it's just one more reason for Hillary supporters to vote McCain if Hillary is not on the Democratic ticket.

Kathy   May 12th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

If Senator Clinton were a "stong, powerful woman" she would never have resorted to all the negativity to foward her campaign in the first place. Her lack of faith and integrity in who she is has landed her in the unfortunate spot of where she is. I for one was once a "believer" in her and all she stood for, but she, and only she, is the one appearing so "desperate" to win that they would bend the rules any which way to have it go in her favour. She is crossing a line between being a "tenatious and formidable opponent" to becoming "desperate and clingy loser". So, the anology to "Glenn Close" is unfortunately well earned!

The Gender Card   May 12th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Seems to me that this is just one more instance of the rampant sexism that the Clinton campaign has had to endure, that will be swept under the carpet and ignored - while countless other closeted misogynists snicker at the water cooler - it's disgusting.

Why should women in general, and Senator Clinton in particular, be subjected to this kind of treatment in America in 2008??

I think it's time that Senator Clinton deliver a speech on sexism and at least bring the conversation to the forefront. It's time that all Americans, including Obama supporters, refuse to tolerate sexism with the same gusto with which they (thankfully) refuse to tolerate racism.

Ben   May 12th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

I think Obama and Clinton should still work together. Obama can't ignore her because she has a lot of supporters.

Obama 08!!

Okay   May 12th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

As an independant, I vote on the issues, not the person, not the party, the issues. And this year my issues are the economy, the war, the environment, and health care. Based on these concerns, even if the person wasn't my first choice, my vote goes to whomever wins the Democratic Party nomination because that person best represents my interests, compared to the other guy. Write in votes and having the other candidate run as an independent doesn't work (as history has proven) because if HRC couldn't win the majority of the primaries, the odds are unlikely that she can win the GE. So casting votes for people who did not gain major party support is really just another vote for the opposing party.
Now I'm not the most logical person in the world so I'm having a hard time understanding what is the matter with so many people writing on here. Over 70% of Americans think that America is going the wrong direction and yet there are people who would rather continue going in the same wrong direction than to at least try to make things better. You owe it to your neighbors, your children, the soldiers fighting and giving up their lives in Iraq, and mostly to yourselves to make a logical decision to get our country back on track. I get that you don't like the person who won the nomination, I get that you don't like the process that got him the nomination, I get that you don't like Obama's supporters (I don't blame you) but walking around with a chip on your shoulder because you didn't get the person you wanted to represent you is illogical.

I'm asking all my fellow Americans to use your head. If you don't see the solution you want for your problems, then aim for what you can realistically get so that in the end you can at least say you tried.

Vote the issues 08.

Emma   May 12th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Senator Clinton is like a bad penny you can't get rid of. When you think things have cleared up and are well on the way to a final outcome, along comes this bad penny and you must start over again.

I believe Senator Clinton is scared of not campaigning, after all this has been her life for the past two years and when you believe that the nomination is yours, then this young man comes along and steal the hearts of many Americans and you stand by the wayside befuddled about all the commotion, but you continue to trudge along believing that you have been ordained to receive the nomination and ultimately win the general election and move to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and everything you have worked for has suddenly been turned on its ear because you miscalculated the power of "change." What a reaction! How would you feel? Wouldn't you hold on to your only life line hoping that a miracle saves you? This is where Senator Clinton is today.

Venus   May 12th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

That was not nice!

Come on people! This race is not over and it's Hillary campaign – let's finish the primaries on June 3, 2008.

The rest of the states will vote and it would be un-fair to stop this race! It cost money for primaries!

Obama has won but – let's give Hillary a lot of respect – she is a fighter and have more guts than the people who are talking about her! She tried to win and that's what contests are about!

Also – let's not forget that Bill Clinton was a good president and the 90s were good times! Hillary has done a lot of wonderful things – like running for president! Not too many people – woman or man can stay they lived their life as the Clintons! Hillary has a lot to be proud of!

She was first lady, senator and ran for president!

Let's start giving the Clintons their due respect – they have done a lot of wonderful things for our country and our world and both have made history!

Look – a lot of people are sitting on the side-line watching Hillary!

Thank you Bill and Hillary!

Go Obama!

Wow, what a nasty thing to say. If this comment was of a racist nature people would be screaming but since it is just sexist – oh well.

Matthew   May 12th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

This is typical of the Obama campaign, the Obama campaign's surrogates and the media – throwing every negative gender stereotype under the sun at Hillary Clinton. The fact is, Sen. Clinton has waged a historic campaign in running as the first viable female candidate for the presidency. Sadly, that story has been largely ignored by most in the media who view Obama's candidacy as the first viable African American candidate for president as something more historic, groundbreaking or worthy of reflection. Innocent statements have been twisted to inject aspect of race, while blatantly sexist remarks have gone unchallenged or worse, treated as humorous anecdotes. When the dust finally settles on this historic campaign, we will certainly be able to look back and say, with much pride, that our country has come a long way in its attempts to address racial disparity. I would hope we could say the same about gender inequalities but this campaign has proven otherwise.

On a less philosophical and more political note, women have been fiercely protective and supportive of Hillary Clinton, pulling her back from the brink of defeat on more than one occasion. They are intensely loyal to her and view an attack on Hillary as an attack on all women. Obama's people would do well to recognize this and quit with the negative gender stereotypes, particularly if they hope to win in November.

And for those that vote just because their candidate is in the picture, how are you not also guilty of the things you so vehemently despise???? So if Obama does not win I'll vote McCain and vice versa??? I ask is thins a case of someone who can take this country somewhere or just a personality war.

Tony Z- MD   May 12th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

Must be a slow news day.

It is time for Obama and Clinton supporters need to come together. The media is spinning your thoughts and making it news. Here is an example.

1) African American support Obama at a rate around 90%. This is the same rate they support the Democratic Party.

2) Hillary Clinton is appealing to the female base. A woman should have been President or Vice-President a long time ago.

I think the a huge difference is that Sen. Clinton has made the issue of race much bigger than it needs to be. She has trampled over the African American vote due to lack of respect. Obama has not done this to blue collar workers. Some of you will talk about his pastor or bittergate, but take a long moment to think about what he was really saying.

Hi- I'm an Obama supporter and I really don't think it's nice for people to bash Hillary on these blogs. I disagree with her proposed policies and her handling of her campaign but as well but we should follow the example of our noble next President, Barak Obama, who has been nothing but gracious towards Senator Clinton, despite her attacks on him. Her staying in the race is doing more damage to her own political future and if she wants to self-destruct while going broke in the process, no one should try to stop her. Yes, there are people who are going to vote for McCain simply because they will not vote for Obama but the political process isn't logical. Hopefully, those people will come to their senses and vote based on the issues and not because of hurt feelings. May the best candidate win.

Why is Bill and Hillary want to go back in the White House so badly that they won't believe the train has gone?.

They will fight to change to rule as much as they want but it will not happen.

Billary want the White house so badly they won't tell us what is at stake. In my eye everyone have the right to the white house, but in Billary's eyes they felt it belong to them.

Bill faught hard to secure the nominee for his wife, but failed. Maybe God knows why, it is time for them to let go.

California Voter   May 12th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

You know I think one of the underlying issues in this campaign has been sexism. Frankly, I don' t see why 90 percent of the women just don't go and vote for Hillary because she is a woman the way African Americans are voting for him because he is part African American. Really! Don't expect us to vote for Obama in November if he takes this democratic primary the same way he won his other elections - dirty! Look now he is wearing a flag lapel pin (probably with the 57 states on it) prepping for the general election with McCain. Obama has never explained why he spent 20 years as a member of a black liberation church that has as its 10 point values, a "non-negotiable commitment to Africa" and a former pastor whose message is full of hate and anger. Even Oprah left that church because of the pastor's remarks. And Obama never heard them???? Give me a break.

McCane 08' – Don't write in Hillary, because voting McCane is voting twice vs the Obama supporters and Obama.

EC   May 12th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

I'm disappointed by these types of comments. I think Americans are just getting so sick of this race dragging on and one. It's wasting so much valuable time that could be spent focusing on Sen. McCain.

I mean Sen. Clinton has every right to stay in the race, but everyone knows she's just going through the "MOTIONS' because the numbers don't lie. Her win in WVA will not only give HER some delegates, but it also gives Sen. Obama more delegates because Sen. Clinton is NOT going to win all 100% of the votes!! So, even if she gets half of the delegates, he still will GAIN in delegate numbers!!

So her winning in WVA will also be a WIN for him in numbers. Every time Sen. Obama can walk away with a PORTION of the delegate numbers, it creates a STRONGER pledged delegate base for him.

So the FAT lady has already SUNG, the problem is the Clintons are HARD of hearing!!

How in the heck this kind of stuff qualifies as national news is beyond me! People say things they shouldn't all the time – at least in my office – thank goodness that when any of the folks under my supervision spout off about something (which happens at least once a day) – I'm not supposed to 'distance myself' or disavow or whatever – I'm not responsible for what a single one of my subordinates or superiors say – I can't imagine anybody in the real world who is!

Marie in California   May 12th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Sounds like Cohen is in the tank with Obama, so not surprised about the nature of his comment.

Well, I still support Hillary....I voted for her and I have also consistently helped with monetary contributions. And I will keep up my support.

On the other hand, I have very little so-called party loyalty, so if the nomination gets handed to Obama (which it seems the party and the MSM have been trying to do from the beginning) then my vote and my money will shift over to McCain....

....unless, of course, Hillary chooses to run as a third party candidate. Then I'll keep right on supporting her.

Chuckling in California   May 12th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

A c'mon people. The guy must "mispoke". We all forgave Hillary for the really funny sniper fire incident that a comedian (Sinbad) had to correct her on. Why can't we forgive this one? It was kind of funny, but everyone knows it's not true. If Hillary were really like that, she would have boiled Bill's "rabbit" a decade ago.

This is America, folks, within reason, you're allowed to say what you think. Unless the Bush administration changed it when we weren't looking (they have a tendency to do that) the Constitution allows it. If we get all brittle every time someone says something silly, we're going to be really brittle all of the time.

For those of you who are just now outraged enough to contribute to Hillary's campaign, where have you been when she really needed you? If you're really for Hillary, open up your wallets and shut your mouths. In this election money rules. No money? You don't get to rule.

james, el paso   May 12th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

I'm an adamant Obama supporter, i've even held large gatherings for him in my hometown, but i'm not against Hillary, I think true Obama supporters are the ones who don't bash the other candidate, but instead embrace the party, and ultimately the ideas of both parties that they agree with, after all the Obama campaign is not out to get anyone, Obama has been part of many bills that were co-sponsored across party lines. Is he perfect? No. Is Hillary perfect? No. Is anyone perfect? Not at all.

I don't always agree with every Obama Policy, but I agree with his idea of bringing together the parties on both sides of the blue and red fence. I also believe that Hillary will eventually champion Obama as he takes on McCain, whether it is as V.P. or not. After all if she can champion a party back to health and help get Barack Obama nominated after everything she has thrown at him, I think that sends a strong signal to the party down the road that she can really turn situations around, so maybe this campaign will actually strengthen her in the future depending on the outcome.

Matthew   May 12th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

That doesn't seem like a fair comparison... unless Clinton continues to run after all of the primaries have concluded and she is not the winner. I believe she will run all the way through to the convention but once a decision has been clearly made, she will stop. However, in this election, anything is possible.

Our national security is just too important to rely on a rookie senator with such horrible judgement and arrogance. A vote for Obama equals a vote for McCain.

So, are you going to try to pin this one on Obama too. Obama is supported by an incredibly broad coalition, so it's ridiculous.

I do think that Clinton ought to bow out, but I don't think that a comparison to a misogynistic stereotype is appropriate. Personally, I think that Clinton considers herself Democratic party royalty and can't believe that she could lose to a _commoner_ like Obama. Which just makes the whole "elitist" thing that much more laughable.

I have noticed that CNN have been blocking all of my posts!!!!!! I am an African-American female and Hillary supporter. I am truly amazed by the hatred (or jealousy) that has been directed toward the Clintons. I am a life-long Democrat (35 years) and for the first time in my life I find myself questioning why am a Democrat. I thought the point of having a convention was to select the candidate for the general election. Why is everyone trying to force Hillary to quit? Why were the voters in Florida and Michigan disenfranchised and none of their votes will count and why should these votes support the Democratic party in November? The press and media have been so unfair to Hillary and my husband and myself have will not be voting in the general election.

Laura   May 12th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

I think that Cohen's comments are calculated and reputable. He reflected the other side of Obama's campaing and perhaps the real one. One that is deeply negative, but has the ability to appear clean. Apologizing is the least that Cohen should have done, yet I hope his disrespectful and desctructive comments open people's eyes. If Cohen is the kind of people that Obama is working with, what can you expect from Obama. Come on people, Wright, the bitter comments, and now Cohen's comments. What will it take for people to wake up and see Obama and all his supporters for what they really are.

Let's not get carried away with Clinton-bashing! Let Sen. Clinton do her thing, so long as she doesn't campaign negatively and undermine Democrats' chances for victory. Like Obama, her candidacy is an historic moment.

I know many Obama supporters like to vent their anger, such as comparing to the character in "Fatal Atracdtion." Anger and bashing feels good, but it's counterproductive. We need Obama's and Clinton's supporters and Independents and open-minded Republicans to work for the Democrats' victory in November, including states like WV and KY.

Rep Cohen must not have a wife, mother, sister or daughter I mean really, would he want someone to treat them with such contempt, demean them, hold them back and make fun of them for being a female? What exactly is it about him or Obama that makes them better than the rest of us?

Obama v McCain   May 12th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

i have to say, if stories like this keep up.. she will NOT leave..out of spite!..Obama backers and supporters should ALL take a page from his handbook by being gracious and respectful.. you know..kill her with kindness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another example of Obama's uniting ways!

This comment would be laughable if it wasn't so sexist.

How very disrespectful!

When the Dems are split and in disarray come November, people like Steve Cohen will have no further to look, than the end of their stuck up noses, to see whom is responsible.

Incredible, Disgusting!

Mary   May 12th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

How about saying that Al Capone and Senator Obama have similar personalities and judgement. To say that Senator Clinton and the character in Fatal Attraction is just as ridiculous.
Senator Obama seems obsessed at winning this election any way he can. He wants the power.

Marshall   May 12th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

Yes, while this is funny...it is wrong. People should treat each other like they want to be treated. I am guilty, Hiilary is guilty, Barak is guilty, everyone reading this is guilty.

You only have yourself to blame if you vote for McCain and things stay the same or get worse. At what time do you you change jobs because it costs more to get to work then you make? That is what we have to look forward if we keep the status quo.

This is one of the reasons why BHO WILL NEVER GET MY VOTE!! Because of the arrogance, immaturity and derogatory remarks made by his supporters throughout the campaign. On TV, editorials and blogs–all of them. Doesn't matter what level they are they are. You think we won't remember. Oh, yes we will–all of it!

Now, let's see if CNN posts this. When one speaks the truth and speaks it with maturity, CNN tends not to post it.

Robert in Toronto,ON   May 12th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

Ok, take a deep breathe for all those who are saying his comments were sexist. They are NOT because it's his remarks are not about a man v. women...it's about this particular women who's obsession to be the President at all costs mind you...is what he's saying.

And let's not lump Obama with that Senator's comments, because I'm sure you wouldn't want us to lump some of Clinton's surrogates with your candidate – now would you?

And yes that is mean, but LOL that was funny.

As a man I don't think it is chauvenistic as much as it is an unfair analogy. I think Clinton needs to stay in the race as long as she wants to. The important thing is that she does not go negative against Obama. I think the Super delegates have made that clear. No one should be telling her to get out of the race. That includes all of us Obama supporters.

There are alot of people out there that still haven't had their say so to those of you that have voted.. respect your fellow citizen. This process isn't damaging the party. I am a die-hard Obama supporter. Yes, there is desperation in the Clinton Camp, but I would not go as far as to compare her to the Fatal Attraction character. But I do think her conduct is unacceptable in that I believe that the end she is willing to go to do not justify the means!!! It is a fact that her only path to the nomination is to cause racial divide. America, we need to stand up with one voice that it is unacceptable. This is serious business that is way bigger than the candidates and this election. If this strategy is not checked now will cause lasting damage on this entire country, let alone the Democratic Party.

Unite to fight!!!

I don't see her as Fatal Attraction, but more like the jock who can't leave the game.

And to all of you Hillary supporters who say you won't vote for Obama. I say shame on you. If that is what you are truely going to do. Then you were never a member of the Democratic Party and you should vote with the Republicans. I can't believe you would be so petty, because your candidate lost. This isn't the NFL or MLB and your favorite team lost. This is about our future. You realize staying home or voting for Mcsenile will further destroy this country. Hillary is done and everyone knows it, but her. She ran a great late campaign, but it was to late to save her. It's time to look forward get together and get the Republicans out of the White House.

Unbelievable! Well what do you expect from a guy who went against the will of his constituency! What loyalty!

What do you think Senator Obama? Is this the "new" politics or the "old?" What about your earlier statements (when you were behind in the polls) that the Superdelegates should vote with their districts? Hillary won Tennessee!

Oh, it's "new" politics when it benefits you, I guess

It's easy to issue an apology but harder to think before you speak. You can say all day long that you want the party to unite but when you make spiteful remarks like this I'm afraid I don't believe you.

I harbor no ill will to Clinton, it was a race and Obama has basically won and we move on. Had Clinton won I would still vote Democrat because they are nearly identical on the issues which is why the race has been so close I'm sure.

Low blow   May 12th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

I have seen some of the most despicable comments from all kinds of people during this campaign. Does competition have to bring out the worst in humanity? Obama supports vs Hillary supporters – we should all be unified this time. The sexist and racist stuff is diappointing to say the least. This man is shameless.

Melinda Charlotte, NC   May 12th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

I trulty do not know from where Hillary Clinton draws her strength. These tyes of attacks on her character that have been ocurring throughout this process have thoroughly incensed her supporters. I simply do not understand why people fill the need to throw such vitriol and hatred on any human being, not just Hillary Clinton, but anyone. I really do not see how she is able to put up with it. The vapidity of the American people truly brings tears to my eyes. Hillary-do not run with Obama even if he asks. You do not need to do anything to help either him or his lunatic supporters. Just let them go down in flames in November; they deserve it.

PR, Washington   May 12th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

I understand why he had to apologize, however, she does remind you someone along those lines.

HRC is only trying to take Obama out and along with him those of us who are democrats and give us several more years of hardship that would be her happy ending.

Oren Ovadia, California   May 12th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

It is not over until the Fat lady sings.... and she hasn't sang yet!!!! If Hillary will not get the Nom. I wish she will pull a Liberman... to teach all the Democrats a good lesson. At this point she has nothing to lose, she will stil be the great First Lady and the Great Senator of New York. People forget... how good she is. But, we will never know about Obama cause he will never win the General Election. Supporters of Hillary like me, we rather vote for Mccain than Obama. It is not because he is Black, it's because we just dont believe in him.

Obama better try to reel in some of his supporters. He's going to need Hillary's supporters if he expects to win in November. The country is basically 50-50 Republican/Democrat and Obama is only just over half of the Democratic vote. If he only gets half of Hillary's supporters vote – in the general election – he loses. I voted for Hillary and I'm leaning toward McCain myself.

Senator Cohen should be ashamed of himself. This is a case of sexism at it's most venal. Can you imagine if someone compared McCain or Obama to the Jack Nicholson character in "The Shining?" While everyone is walking on eggshells afraid to criticize Obama for fear of it being interpreted as racism, no one seems at all troubled by the sexism exhibited towards Senator Clinton nor by Wright's obvious anti-semitims. Are we to believe that only some forms of prejudice are bad? The senate should censure Senator Cohen!

John   May 12th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

David, Paducah, Kentucky   May 12th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

He was right to apologize for the comment. While many people may share the view, it is not appropriate to say it publicly. Senator Obama and most of his supporters (like myself) respect Senator Clinton's right to remain in the race until she decides to end her participation. There is no doubt that if she is allowed to end her candidacy on her own terms that she will work hard for Senator Obama's election and rally her supporters behind the Democratic nominee. She, like all of us Obama supporters know that we cannot allow another Republican to replace George W. Bush in the White House.

Update...   May 12th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

Maria   May 12th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

That is pathetic. The kinds of comments that have been made against Senator Clinton during this campaign by members of the Democratic Party and supporters of Barack Obama are APPALLING. I no longer want anythig to do with this 'party' and wouldn't blame Bill and Hillary Clinton if they had no loyalty to any of these so-called Democrats. It is clear who have been the dicisove and destructive factors in this primary. White male for Obama   May 12th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Hey CNN do you think it easy to let go?

Months ago Hillary was the Queen presidency annointee now she is fighting with shame. She won't just bow out with shame although sooner the better.

she can't do no more damage to Obama now, because she has done her worst. An if she does more damages , she will never run on democratic platform again.

Yes every one will compare her to anything , but you know it is not easy to stop believing that you have lost.

Marshall   May 12th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Truth hurts some times.

Dell, Laurel, MD   May 12th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

I agree. She is in a state of denial that only lightening can strike her from. She is pretty darn selfish. She absolutely refuses to believe she has been beaten by Mr. Obama. Get a clue...it's over.

sacto joe   May 12th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Cohen is an idiot. I'm an Obama supporter but I'd vote for Clinton if she won the nomination.

Bismarck West Virginia   May 12th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

This is outrageous! This is a typical example of startegic undermining of Obama Candidacy by people who are apparently for him in public but might have diabolic hidden designs on his campaign going forward. Otherwise how could a seasoned politician make this kind of comment in this stage of the race if not purely to alienate more of clintons supporters and harden thier resolve against uniting around the eventual democratic party;s nominee. We Clinton supporters and Strong democrats are not dumb and will continue to resist all agenda to hurt this great party in the fall elections

Let's Please be respectful from PA   May 12th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

I am an ardent Obama supporter but I believe that these types of comments are inappropriate. I think Sen. Clinton has a right to remain in the race until she is satisfied. There are 2 weeks left, as long as it is kept clean, I think everyone needs to relax. Comparing her tenacity to some Psycho stalker is wrong. I don't think her supporters are crazy, I think that they believe in her and many women are just plain proud of her accomplishment. As I have said I am an Obama supporter but I admire Sen. Clintons zeal, and she should not be disrespected by her peers.

CT in CT   May 12th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

HRC needs to get out now and start the healing of rifts in the party she is destroying for personal glory.

People have said that Bill Clinton didn't have the nomination sewn up until June and won. The results were that he garnered 43% in the GE with Bush I and Perot splitting the Republican vote.

With about half of HRC's supporters saying they refuse to vote for Obama in the GE, cutting off their noses to spite their faces, it is evident WE NEED TO COME TOGETHER SOONER RATHER THAN LATER!

Tee-off in CA   May 12th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

"obsessed and mentally unstable " yep that sounds just like the "Queen of Denial"

ANNIA   May 12th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Ok, who is divisive now? It's bovious that Obama's supporters are hateful & trying to destroy HRC any which way they can, so their candidate won't have to feel the pressure...otherwise, he might just crack!!!

If Hillary is not the nominee, Mr. Barr, here I come...

LB   May 12th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

hahahaha!!

proud army and navy mom   May 12th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

it's true. no apology necessary.

BettiH, Indianapolis, IN.   May 12th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I can see that happening.

Gill   May 12th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I guess this is the level of comparison Cohen gives his family members when they are determined to make something happen – be it right or not!

Cohen is an Idiot   May 12th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Cohen is an idiot. Hopefully he will never receive a vote from a woman, or man again.

Rebecca   May 12th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

You might want to fix that first paragraph. I don't think Hillary Clinton urged herself to withdraw from the race...

Lee WV   May 12th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

The congressman might have to apologize but the magic of ot is we don't.This is a good comparison,Clinton appears to me to have the old'If I can't have it no one can " attitude.

Alexis   May 12th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

LOL! HAAAA! HAAAAA! Well the truth shall set you FREE! She should just drop, out, she is killing our party!! and we need to be trying to put our heads together in trying to bring our party together!!!!

shirley ann   May 12th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

He was only saying the truth. This has become an obsession for her.

gaea in NC   May 12th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

"Hillary Clinton publicly urged Hillary Clinton to withdraw from the presidential race"

huh?

Kevin Leo (Jonesboro, GA)   May 12th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

I am totally for Barack but some of the comments coming out against Hillary are getting carried away. What is more important – beating McCain or putting Hillary down?! I personally have hated the way that Hillary and her camp has campaigned but we can not allow ourselves to sink down to her level. As Barack suppoerters, we need to emulate Barack in this regards and rise above pettiness for the betterment of our party and the nation as a whole!!!

Phyllis   May 12th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Hopefully, this representative will lose his seat in November. That's just petty and mean, and irrelevant

HILLARY 08 OR MCCAIN   May 12th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Oh, this is a different kind of campain (sarcasm). Obama supporters are so nasty. This is what Obama has been doing all along. He tells everyone he is a "different" kind of politician, but just has surrogates say the nasty stuff.

We see through your rhetoric Obama.

I will never vote Obama.

Hillary 08

Cammi317   May 12th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

LOL...That was definitely NOT a nice statement, but it is still funny as heck!

Carmen   May 12th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Apology accepted but in a way it does seem that way. What we fail to realize it that Hillary had a silver spoon in her mouoth when she enter the race and was told to do nothing but sit back and it will be all over. Now that she has to comptete, it is a different and hard game for her to figure out which maze lead to the door. Hillary and Glenn close do have close ties to each other, but Glenn was not Monica to Bill.

Now that's funny   May 12th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

I hate to laugh, but that's a funny comparison

Monte Brown   May 12th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

This is very petty. Obama supporters are turning Clinton supporters to McCain with these petty, sexist comments.

sacto joe   May 12th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

DEMOCRATS BEWARE!!!

A lot of neo-cons posing as Democrats are posting hate mail. They're trying to drive a wedge between us!

RESIST THE NEOCON HATE MACHINE!

Bobo   May 12th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

He's right on. He blew it with me when he issued the apology. Manu up you weasel and stand by your words!

Julia   May 12th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

I will NEVER vote for Obama. EVER. The DNC, Obama and his supporters have made my choice very clear – McCain. EVER.

Jane   May 12th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

The stories I've heard about some of the Obama supporters and their tactics would make your blood curdle. And to think, this man may win the democratic nomination.

mary nagata   May 12th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

I have a question about the indiana primary. how come everybody including the reporting have been saying hillary won it by 2%. It's 1.11%... if you round it off in any way, it's 1 %. looks like the reporters are so lazy that they don't do their job! just copy somebody else!!

Jennifer   May 12th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

What a remarkably stupid comment from Rep. Steve Cohen. This just goes to show you how insidious sexism is in our world and how it has hurt Senator Clinton's campaign.

Citizen   May 12th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Barack better watch his back, because Hillary is nuts.

Kris from AZ   May 12th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

She needs to land the plane...Wheels need to be dropped so that she can ease on down and land with little turbulance and help dems unite. Dems by jumping ship you jump democrate values that we love and care so much about!

NickNas   May 12th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

OK Fine! It wasn't a nice thing to say BUT......... In the words of Larry the Cable guy.

I don't care WHO you are ...that is sum funny stuff right there.

USAF Sr. Airman   May 12th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

You all need to take a step back and take a look at yourselves. You Dems bashing Obama or Clinton, all you're doing is helping out the GOP by feeding the negativity.

The fact about Michigan and Florida is both states broke the rules even though they knew their votes wouldn't count. Yes I feel bad for the voters, but that's the way it goes. The states and the CANDIDATES (even Clinton) all agreed the results of the states wouldn't count. Drop the issue.

As far as CNN being biased, well both sides are saying the same thing, so what does that mean? CNN is against everyone?

Stop being petty and look at the bigger picture folks.

- Democratic '08. Either way.

Patty   May 12th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

What a jerk and CNN you are jerks for putting it in the news along with whoever. Why can't people just let the process run. So much for democracy.

Tjaye   May 12th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

OMG!! We were joking about that a few weeks ago!

"I will NOT be IGNOOORED!!"

lmao!

gerald strother   May 12th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

Gallup Daily: Obama Pulls Ahead of Clinton, 50% to 43% NEW May 12, 2008

P, CA   May 12th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

Eh, I think Hillary is closer to Prof. Umbridge (Imelda Staunton) in Harry Potter 5. Trust me on this one. Seriously. Look at the pink wearing, hairdo, and mannerisms.

I was thinking about trying to get a picture out on the internet showing Hillary and Umbridge side-by-side saying "Kids, a vote for Hillary is a vote for Umbridge; go tell your parents!"... but that would've been too mean.

I'd have voted for her if she'd gotten the nom, but I'm 1,000x happier with Obama.
