Clinton campaign: Obama ran an 'aggressive' WV race

Clinton campaign said Obama should stop downplaying expectations in West Virginia.

Clinton campaign said Obama should stop downplaying expectations in West Virginia.

(CNN) - As voters headed to the polls in West Virginia in a contest Hillary Clinton is expected to win, a memo released by her campaign argued that Barack Obama had waged an “aggressive campaign” in the state – and that a loss by the Illinois senator there would raise troubling questions about his general election chances.

"In the face of grim poll numbers, the Obama campaign has attempted to dismiss today's outcome despite the fact that Sen. Obama has outspent us on advertising, has more staff in the state, and more than double the number of offices,” said the campaign in an e-mail sent to reporters Tuesday.

“He has also benefited from the support of the most high-profile endorsers in West Virginia-Sen. Jay Rockefeller and Congressman Nick Rahall. By every measure, the Obama campaign has waged an aggressive campaign in the Mountain State," they said.

The Obama campaign has been looking to downplay the results of West Virginia’s vote, spending the evening in Michigan, a fall battleground. Obama trails Clinton by 30-40 points in recent polls of the state’s primary voters.

Barak has been choosen by the great man above to turn this great country around. No powers on earth can stop this man to become our next President. First time I Saw him he reminded me of two leaders. The late John Kennedy and the late Prime Minister of Jamaica Michael Manley.

Ask the almighty for wisdom, knowlege and understanding and he will deliver you.

If Obama going to WV on Monday and running advertisement is aggressive then what do you call spending the last 7 days in WV with yourself and 2 adult family members campaigning for you. Hillary, your spin ability amazes me. First popular votes count but only if you are in the lead, then superdelagates count but only if you are in the lead. It's all based on your prospective. Poor sportsman ship is not worn well by you. I use to admire you so.

Clearly Obama blew off WV. He was in DC at the HOR last week while Hillary was campaigning. I don't necessarily agree with the strategy, but everyone can agree he shined it. He will need to come back a few times over the summer. Most democrats will not defect because McCain, good guy that he is, does not support most policies democrats care about.

CNN need to see how many viewers will watch the returns this evening. I think that the number of viewers will be dismal when compared to last week and previous primaries. You folks also need to start shutting her down a bit and prepare for Aug and Nov. We have our folks are only encouraging a Candidate who has NO chances and false hopes for voters that may become bitter. While we are trying to unite folks are trying to make news stories out of issues that we have gotten beyond.

I have family and friends in West Virginia. The reason why this state should be a no-brainer for Clinton as well as have no intensive spending by Obama is that this state would NOT vote for a black man. It is still a state that has demographics and background which favor anyone but Obama. The analysts ask why Obama is weak in this state and areas of Pennsylvania and other states...the answer is they would rather not vote for Obama because of his skin. However, this is why its so exciting to see Obama win the nomination...because he WILL change how General Elections are ran and won. This is what the Supers and Democrats should be happy about. Not about how Clinton is trying to exploit this sad fact to get nominated. She is using divisive tactics and she knows exactly what she is doing in bringing out Kentucky folks and WV folks these next couple of weeks. Oh yeah...I used to live in southern Indiana next to Kentucky. They won't vote for Obama either. But we need to look past them and look towards the future. Clinton is basically asking the nation to consider the fact he can't win over ALL white voters, so we should just nominate her. With that approach...a black candidate would NEVER be elected by a party. We need to start somewhere and show the old voters and the old politicians times will change with the younger and educated generation. Step we come.

It's funny how Clinton now wants to count the Florida and Michigan primary votes when intially she agreed they wouldn't count! The most recent spin is a loss in WV should tell the American voters that Obama won't win the general election. Hahahahahaha......... Actually, there is undeniable quantitative data (delegate votes and increasing superdelegate votes) that proves the Democratic Party doesn't want you Hilary! You don't respect the Democratic Party and it's governing rules. You'll say anything just to be heard i.e. sniper fire, gasoline break, and you win the uneducated white vote (you said it).

Obama/Edwards is clearly the best option for the Democratic Party to truly turn this country around! Congratulations Obama!

Among the 50 states West Virginia is synonymous with ignorance. This is Hillary's constituency. Hillary is an evil woman. She is the paradigm evil lawyer. She got caught perpetrating fraud in the Whitewater scandal. She aint no Bill Clinton.

Sen. Obama had ad running here for months in WV. If he loses by this big number as stated above, he will not the general election at all. WV is a democratic state but gone to Bush twice giving him the white house, if this year Democrats loses this state again then they can only dream about the white house.

What do the polls tell us today.........Clinton will reign supreme in West Virginia. (and Kentucky)

That makes complete sense. Uneducated whites are her base. She said it herself. If we want change and progression in this country WV and KY is NOT where we need look.

Appalachia is not kind to those of color. I am from SWPA and this is probably one of the most racist parts of the country.

A democrat doesn't have a chance there in the general election.

PLEASE, the chance of a black man winning in this older, uneducated, poor state is a joke. Clinton couldn't win this either in the general.

The race isn't over until the fat woman in the pants suit sings!

I am so very sick of your comments. Hilary Clinton does not answer to you guys, or to the media. She will stop campaigning when she is good and ready. That is the way elections have been since the beginning. If she chooses to go all the way to the convention you do not have anything to say about it. This race is not going to be decided by the media or be one sided. All the states WILL vote. All of you Obama supporters are just afriad that if justice is played out your flimsy candidate might not get the nomination or if this goes on longer he will fall on his face in some way. You do not have much confidence in him do you!!
