(CNN) — The idea of a “gas tax holiday” has been a hot-button issue on the campaign trail: Hillary Clinton argues it could provide drivers with relief at the pump, while Barack Obama has called it a Washington gimmick.

What do West Virginia Democrats think of the idea?

According to the exit polls, 63 percent overall think it’s a good one. But while 72 percent of Clinton’s backers think the proposal is a good idea, just 43 percent of Obama’s agree.

Pam   May 13th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Because Hillary's supporters are uneducated.

James   May 13th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

Yeah yeah… WV would believe anything Hillary says….It's expected.

Franky   May 13th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

Like I said, an identity crises………..hey, Hillary didn't care in the beginning so why should I care now???? "What goes around, comes around" Hillary…..

Independent   May 13th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

It is a horrible idea. Under Clinton's plan, she will make the oil companies take it out of their profits. If they have to do that, the they will turn around and increse the price to cover their losses, plus an additional increase that they deem. It is not a good idea - the public benifits nothing from her pandering. I hope she is not buying votes in WV like she did in Texas and Ohio.
. Read the article in the New York Times!

Laura   May 13th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

I think having Obama for president and Clinton for VP would unite the party and unite the states.

Kyle   May 13th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

Of course 63% of WV think its a good idea. They need a tax break. I bet Clinton has never been deep in the mountains where people live in 3rd world conditions.

Ludovic   May 13th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

No surprise.
according to exil polls, 70% of today voters doesn't have a college degree.

Berat (Pronounced buh-RAHT), Park Ridge, IL   May 13th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

>>According to the exit polls, 63 percent overall think [the gas tax idea]'s a good one.<<

So… 63% of West Virginians like to be pandered to?

On a side note, the title of this post is far beyond misleading. Bill Schneider continues to promulgate opinions and share statistics as if his boss is Terry McAuliffe. I'm getting a little tired of CNN's "expert" opinions proving to be nothing more than memos from the Clinton campaign. And no, that's not because I support Obama; it's because CNN is acting like Hillary herself, refusing to accept the truth that their ratings boondoggle is over.

pittsburgh bob   May 13th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

63 percent - also the exact percentage of WVA voters silly enough to think she would make a decent president. total pandering and she's been called out by every rational thinker in the country.

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah   May 13th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

We could have predicted 60 years ago how West Virgina would come out today! THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN!

It is clear to me what the difference is, the states West of the Mississippi or more progressive and educated. A lot states on the on the east side of the Mississippi still live in the past never fully understanding those who live around them. They stay locked up in there homes always afraid of those who are different.

Obama will win every state West of the Mississippi with the exception of Arizona McCain%u2019s home state. Obama is well loved out here in the West we always look into a mans heart and see his soul . That is how the West was won we always look ahead. We do not have all the problems you have on the east side of the Mississippi, we always look forward instead of backwards.

The hate and racism you have handed down from generation to generation in the East does play well out hear in Gods Country. We are not perfect out hear butt we will give a man a honest hearing.

Good Grief   May 13th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

Anyone who thinks it through or reads about economics will come to the conclusion this pander is a farce. It would have harmful rebound effects IF pushed through. On the surface, it sounds great and I understand why some would embrace it, but just think it through to the end and you'll recognize it for what it really is.

skyjuice   May 13th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

Clinton sure managed to pull the wool over their eyes on that issue real good. so sad !

OBAMA 08′/12′

Really? Really? Are you serious? My 12 year old nephew understands its a poor idea. West Virginia…Really?

J.Onofre -CA   May 13th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Yeah I love the gas tax suspension idea. I could save myself $30 bucks and hope it's enough to flip another utility bill.

Supporters of this Gas Tax Holiday need to wake up and focus in on the real problem. OPEC and our unwillingness to commercialize new technologies for oil independence.

Generation X   May 13th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

CNN SPECIAL REPORT- West Virginia is actually Hillary's REAL "home state"! Her cousin's, sister's baby brother once had a shanty of a home in rural West Virginia where Hillary once drank MOONSHINE! For the best political team on television, go to CNN!

It is exactly this kind of pointless political discussion which makes politicians and news agencies absurd and upsetting. This whole gas tax suspension is a joke, and anyone who keeps mentioning it is feeding a pointless ifre. How about some real solutions, how about parking that giant hummer or American SUV. THATS THE REAL PROBLEM………..

Smart   May 13th, 2008 5:49 pm ET

The demograph (as described by Hillary Clinton) says it all. US government should urgently do something about education

R.I.F.   May 13th, 2008 5:49 pm ET

THIS IS AND WILL BE THE MOST IMPORTANT EXIT POLL OF THE NIGHT. IT GOES RIGHT TO THE HEART OF THE PROBLEM FOR OBAMA IN WEST VIRGINIA. UNEDUCATED VOTERS!!! 1 MILLION ECONOMIST SAID THAT THE GAS TAX HOLIDAY IS A SCAM AND WILL NOT HELP, YET 63% OF VOTERS THERE SAID THAT IT'S A GOOD IDEAL. YELP, THAT ABOUT SAYS IT ALL. CAN WE PLEASE MOVE ON TO THE GENERAL ELECTION NOW.

mitchell from arkansaw   May 13th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

Brian   May 13th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

I think this proves education needs to be a higher priority :(.

Kim   May 13th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

I've already been put on the "do not post" list for comments but I'll write anyway. It is ironic that fewer Obama's backers t like the idea when he ran it 3 times as a state senator for a 5% refund when gas was $2 a gallon. I expect CNN will find this somehow offensive and it, like my other comments will never be posted. Hillary '08 and '12!

Miles   May 13th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

Whatever, it won't work. The oil companies will just raise the price to match what it was before the tax suspension (and make even more profit) while we lose federal and/or state revenue.

Just a gimmick for votes.

nathan   May 13th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

most people think it's not good, because they are too rich!
it's better than nothing!

Venus   May 13th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

If Hillary was smart - she should be telling votes to call and email Bush! He's still the president!

Go Obama!

D.Kimbro OHIO   May 13th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

We all know this is a horrible idea. However, acording to the census bureau, alot of people in WVA would benefit from the $30.00 but that would wreck havoc with the turnpike.

yen   May 13th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Pls don't give false hope to people who are already hurting.the said tax relief is just peanuts. We need lasting solutions.Hillary has done her best. It is time to call it quits.Take some rest and go campaigning for the party.

Robert   May 13th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Hmmm I think I see a pattern here. The whole country, except W. Va is supporting Obama. The whole country thinks the gas tax is stupid, except W. Va. The whole country is literate…….

ACH   May 13th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Hillary Clinton will do and say anything to win. We should be very careful of someone who will do and say anything to win.
How does this help us with not having gas tax?
Will it just last for the summer?
What is the point if it doesn't help us long term?
What is a solution?
I don’t need a quick fix.

I need the truth.

She will use the same time machine to get her to win the nomination.
Its over! Get over it!!!!

Cocaine is popular, too. Should we all starting railing coke, too?

Popularity has no relationship to good ideas.

Mark   May 13th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Suspending the gas tax is like putting a bandaid over a gushing laceration. The last 8 stagnant years of fattening up the oil companies and slowed alternative fuel source research. Hitting back at Oil company windfalls is a first step. Heaven forbid, cutting back on use will also send an important message that band of terrorist we know as OPEC. Sure, a tax break sounds good, but it is a gimick, not a solution.

LA. WOMAN   May 13th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Michelle In Philly   May 13th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Can someone please tell me why if I don't vote for Obama that makes me a racist?

I'm not voting for him because he's inexperienced, his ties with all those controversial people in his life and none of the questions answered. I think he used race in this election and manipulated it so that the blame was put on Hillary.

I don't like him because I don't trust him, has nothing to do with the color of his skin.

Robb   May 13th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Still stoking HRC support and controversy, eh Bill? Great job of not pointing out the underlying issues.

David, Santa Rosa, CA   May 13th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Okay Bill Schneider… another big, DUH! Of course Clinton backers support this in W. Virginia. It takes an education to understand why that is a STUPID idea.

All this does is prove that the uneducated are… uneducated. And that sheep, will always be sheep.

Jan   May 13th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Obama himself is a Washington Gimmick of the Democratic Party. I think it is a great idea and simply shows support for the Americans who are being hurt. It will help everyone a bit and certainly tells me that McCain and Clinton do care and understand what is happening with the economy. Obama's brush-off and smart-aleck remarks about us "typical white people" makes me know he does not have a clue what he is getting into after the speeches are over!

Claire   May 13th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Too bad it is a stupid idea…

Marshall   May 13th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

I know this is not the right place to say this but…I don't care. I was excited to vote for a democratic candidate. I wanted change. I have come to see that neither wants change. It is the same old crap just package differently. I am done with all of you. I am falling back to my roots and voting McCain. Keep fighting amongst yourselves. It just makes it easier for my guy to win. Thanks for nothing Dems. You wouldn't know change if it bite you in the …

Good luck in November. You will need it.

For those of you who want Clinton to run as an Independent. Read the rules she can't it is against the rules. But I forgot rules don't matter to you. Just getting her elected does. Just make the rule in pencil…they are easier to change that way.

For the Obama fans…Here is a blast from the past for you. Where is the Beef? He talks pretty, but it is all fluff and no beef.

I am done with you all and these stupid blog playground fights of my dad can beat your dad. Remember while you are fighting on the playground the adults are voting for McCain.

Thanks for nothing!

And yes, this is my last post and time on CNN!

Post if you dare!

DEMS IN 2008   May 13th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Doesn't WV have a high percentage of uneducated voters? Don't they understand that a gas tax holiday may save you $.18 per gallon for three months, but will result in a loss of 300,000 road and construction jobs, and that the oil companies will just raise the price to make up the difference?

Guess not!

LA. WOMAN   May 13th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

laura, i don't agree with you, nobody has devided this party like hillary, but if you want a woman for VP, look up kathleen sibulius of kansas.

Sherri   May 13th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Sad, sad, sad. This ridiculous proposal will put 28 dollars in their pockets over the course of the summer and cost 300,000 jobs across the country. Penny wise and pound foolish. The big oil companies will simply raise the price of oil and in the end a tank of gas will be higher than it is today.

West Virginia you are smarter than to fall for silly political games. At least you should be.

MS in SC   May 13th, 2008 5:56 pm ET

The hard-hit consumer will take economic relief from whereever we can get some. What may seem like small, insignificang economies to some mount up for the regular working family to make daily life more possible and less wearing on the spirit and physical soul.

Matthew, Murfreesboro, TN   May 13th, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Wow, 63% of people will sell their vote for half a tank of gas.

State law in TN states that if federal tax is suspended on gasoline, then the state tax will be increased to take its place. So it will not do anyone here any good. I know that TN did not come up with this plan on their own. How many other states out there will do the same?

David, Santa Rosa, CA   May 13th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

People get educated on this seriously. A gas tax holiday or suspension, or any other fancy word you want to use is only a gimmick. This gimmick will do nothing for you. NOTHING!

Do we really want to continue to be at the mercy of foreign nations for our energy? Let's not prolong the inevitable fact of proclaiming independence.

I can't wait for the real Independence Day when we stop using oil completely.

What a joke the "gas holiday" is. How dumb is the American public to think it's good. We, the Americans, will end up paying for it with higher taxes, fees or cut services…it's a JOKE!!!

Mike from Westchester   May 13th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Did I get the math right?

.72x + .43(1 - x) = .63
.72x - .43x = .63 - .43
.29x = .20
x = .20/.29
x = .69

Final WV election results
HRC = 69%
BO = 31%

John NC   May 13th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

At least Sen. Clinton has said something about the crippling cost of fuel. If the Democrats expect to win in November with whatever ticket, the democratic congressional leadership needs to come up with some kind of temporary cost reduction in order to avoid a deeper recession.

As Sen. Clinton and economists point out, much of the cost of oil is due to speculation. Freeze retail Gasoilne and diesel fuel prices at
$ 2.00 a gallon and see how quickly and dramatically the price of oil drops to the $60.00 level. It's high time the oil company's welfare giveaway is over!!!!

It's nothing but a pander. The good folks in North Carolina and Indiana saw it for what it is. West Virginia? They're obviously easily fooled.
Hillary should be ashamed for bringing it up again… but then she has ABSOLUTELY ZERO shame when it comes to trying to sell voters on her "solutions." Her ideas are horrific national policy, but she'll keep pushing them to pump herself up.
It makes me sick.

Bukky   May 13th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

anyone that thinks the gas tax suspension will be helpful is clearly lacking something… I'm not going to say what, but its clear from Hillary description oh her new base

KE   May 13th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Average politicians always tell you longer term solution is better. But you still need to put bandage on, every mothers knows that.

Hillary carries large coalition. Hillary is the people's choice. Obama is the choice of I have no idea.

The '60s was traumatized era.
Obama's connection with radicals is perhaps his sympathy toward drop outs.

Want real change? The Hillary administration is the real change.

Obama is another Bush and Cheney.

Sally   May 13th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

The gas tax holiday has been debunked by nearly every economist. The only purpose it serves is pandering and West Virginians are obviously susceptible to pandering.
Also, not voting for Obama doesn't make you a racist but West Virginia has a large contingent of folks who are less inclined to vote for a black person. Those are simply facts. Same in Kentucky.

JJM, Oakland   May 13th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Rohn Jay Miller   May 13th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Final results from WV are:

Hilary 61%
Barack 39%

If you're numbers above are accurate. You can infer the final over-all vote by dividing out the 72% and 43% to get to a merged final result of 63%.

Schneider and CNN must know what the final results are based on this exit poll, but can't release them.

It doesn't take a math professor to "reverse engineer" the final results from WV.

Just like it doesn't take a math professor to figure out that anyone who thinks the gas tax holiday is a good idea is a moron….

NOT A HATER 08   May 13th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

SA in OO   May 13th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

Dumb or Dumber . . .

There is no thinking person who has any understanding of how these taxes affect the federal budget, that supports this idea. Because they are both smart enough to know better, I'm absolutely sure neither McCain nor Clinton believe this is a good idea either. And furthermore most industry watchers will tell you that it's unlikely this tax suspension will have much if any impact on gas prices in the short term either. The industry will just take this break as a windfall profit - they've done it before.

So here's the real story - voters (and poll takers) who aren't bright enough to learn the full story about issues like this deserve the devestating long term consequences from actions taken by pandering politicians who don't have the guts to tell them the truth.

Thoughtless voters and gutless politicians. It could well be the biggest story of the 2008 election, and beyond.

funny   May 13th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

I find it funny when people make general remarks as IFF they are the authority on the subject. Like this idiot from Utah who calls himself - Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah. Speak for yourself buddy. I do NOT LIKE BARACK OBAMA because THAT LOSER JOHN KERRY has endorsed her. Yes, THAT and the fact that Obama is a smooth talker - whose ambition is larger than his capacity. And I dislike Michelle Obama. I cannot stand her attitude. She is always chomping at the bits. She has NO grace whatsoever. And if it were not for the Harvard Old Boys network, this idiot would have been still in Illinois - maybe peddling whatever he peddles on the back streets. And nope, that is not a racist remark. The logic here is the same as the one you nincompoops use when you call Hillary a liar. And yes, the last time I checked Baracks's dad was NOT flown in by JFK either. And nope, there aren't 57 states. Maybe he visited them in his dream about hope. As far as GWB is concerned the majority voted for him - THAT is why he got elected as the president. YOU, the AMERICAN people are to be blamed. Not him alone. So man up and own up your part of the responsibility. It is always easy to blame someone else. And like last time all of you idiots would be voting for this snake-oil-salesman who is all talk but nothing. Heck he has not even balanced a spreadsheet, let alone a budget. He has hardly done anything original. He probably did not eveb win a game of Railroad Tycoon. So that makes a few 10 yr olds more FIT and experienced for the job than him

HILLARY08   May 13th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

Oh Please… please commentariat, just slow down. 1) Alot of very educated people all over the country thought the gas tax, as Clinton set it out (making the oil companies PAY for it) was a good idea; 2) many people believe a few bucks a week extra in their pockets for a few weeks would be helpful — I suppose you people have cash enough to burn but some people are not so lucky; 3) HRC NEVER intended this to be a long term economic strategy but a short term solution to ease some of the burden that working people face; and 4) Barack Obama supported a gas tax holiday (in fact sponsored the legislation for it) in ILLINOIS AND THE VOTERS THERE THOUGHT IT WAS A GREAT SUCCESS– and in fact an objective study by an unaffiliated research group found that most of the savings indeed were pocketed by consumers. for those of you who support Barack Obama and are so desperate for this whole thing to be over — try putting on a little grace, you will need HRC supporters to win the presidency, and its not helping to attract us when you constantly whine about how stupid we are…

HILLARY CAN WIN IN NOVEMBER!!   May 13th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

OF COURSE OBAMA'S PEOPLE WOULD OPPOSE THE IDEA!

HILLARY HAS THAT AND A BACK BONE!!!!!!!

kaseam   May 13th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

People in W. Virginia are from another planet; it doesn't matter what they think. The gas tax holiday is only good for uneducated people that don't know any better. This is the reason most people struggle…..it's because they make poor financial decisions, and follow poor advice. Then, they elect leaders that insult the rest of our intelligence. We'll see how well people like the gas tax holiday the next time a bridge collapses.

Tom   May 13th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

Or it could tell you that Barack has already seen it fail in te State of Illinois. Some people are intelligent to learn from history, your kind is the ytoe to repeat history.

Now now Pam, you are starting to belittle Hillary's supporters as "uneducated". So, its true, Obama is elitist and his supporters - "so called educated elites" are uncultured, elitist and do not understand what "humitlity" is? perhaps they dont care to know!

Shirley-Ohio   May 13th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

Pepou   May 13th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

Every economist in the country knows that this gas tax holiday is a pure gimmick. It did not work for Clinton in Indiana and North Carolina. Let's start being serious and working for a REAL energy policy.

Debbie   May 13th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

Clinon supporters must like pandering if they believe she will bring the tax holiday to an actualoty. I symphathize with anyone who has financial problems, I know I do but an average 30 cents a day savings isn't my idea of relief.

Marquon   May 13th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

the idea of a gas tax is horrible. First of all the gas tax will basically have you pay the previous weeks gas prices. The whole thing is bad idea. States already don't have much money and for them to be losing out on any extra money would be obsurd. If saving $30 a year for an already significant price seems reasonable while you could have used it toward higher education seems like a good idea to you, then take it. NOT

1) We don't insult people who vote for other candidates. We insult those who vote AGAINST Barack Obama, because that is a very stupid way to vote. How can you be against everything but not FOR anything?

2) I don't think I'm better than you; I think I'm smarter than you. And yes, I recognize that as elitist. I don't care.

3) I want this race to end before everyone has voted so that the Democratic Party can focus on defeating John McSame and the Republican idiots who've driven this country nearly to its breaking point.

4) D-E-M-O-C-R-A-C-Y (although, admittedly, you spelled it for us). Can you spell "oligarchy?"

5) You obviously know nothing about economics if you think that people STOPPING driving their cars would drive the prices down. Oil prices are not simply based on supply-and-demand economics; they're also bogged down in the backwards economic policies of Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, our (admittedly correct) non-drilling arrangement in ANWR, rising worldwide inflation, and in the automotive industry's absolute refusal to combat oil conglomerates' stranglehold on automobile makers.

Now, a question for you: Who do you support, and why? If your reasoning is good enough, I might just vote for your candidate over him; but so far, Obama is the best I have found. Unless Kathleen Sebelius decides to throw her hat in at the last minute…

rusty   May 13th, 2008 6:13 pm ET

Where I live (Illinois) it costs $4.29 for regular. It would have been nice to get a short term break . Senator Obama has a solution - more expensive and more lethal to our environment - liquid coal technology.
Clearly, a difference in enregy/environmental policy between Obama and Hillary.
If you're for universal health and responsible environmental policies- vote for Hillary.

Nobama.

bo   May 13th, 2008 6:14 pm ET

a gas tax holiday is a bad idea and on this i do agree with obama, but he failed to mention that HE VOTED FOR A GAS TAX HOLIDAY THREE TIMES WHEN HE WAS IN THE STATE SENATE. wow!! i bet every single obama supporter on here is completely clueless about this. so maybe he changed his mind about the issue, but i think that he was just using it as a way to differentiate himself from clinton and mccain; it is a very clever campaign strategy.

i also find it funny how so many obama backers are on here calling out WVens when the same thing could be said of them. BARACK OBAMA IS A GIMMICK!!!

Anna, IL   May 13th, 2008 6:14 pm ET

"Schneider: Gas tax suspension proves popular"

Well, well, well. Why don't you ask the following then:

"What does this mean for Obama?"

or

"This raises serious doubt about Obama"

or

"This may give some Super Delegates a pause…"

Seriously Mr. Schneider. Please don't insult our intelligence any more. It's bad enough that a Democratic candidate like Hillary Clinton has insulted our intelligence more than once.

Jeff   May 13th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Once again, Hillary supporters will believe anything.

Adam C   May 13th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Because many of Hillary's supporter do not have a college degree and they blame their failures on blacks and immigrants. Sad!

OnlyObama08   May 13th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Yeah, $28 bucks… And that's IF the oil companies don't continue to price gouge…

Gimme a REAL break!

And let's remember that Obama's is the only campaign that's NOT having fundraising issues at the moment…

Jeanne   May 13th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Pandering. Not a real solution. Enough said.

James   May 13th, 2008 6:17 pm ET

I will not support Barack is Hillary is the VP. There is a reason I'm NOT voting for her.

Unite to Save our Nation   May 13th, 2008 6:17 pm ET

Solid example of uneducated voters not understanding the principals of supply and demand. Sad, really.

IndependantColorado   May 13th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

Only the uneducated fail to see that the oil companies will simply raise their prices by as much…

scott s   May 13th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

Isn't that funney the stimulous package is coming and the money is supposed to help the economy. but the gas prices have been rising faster now than ever before.(isn't bush a oil guy)

Ernest   May 13th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

No wonder American live for the moment.

Media Blackout May 15th   May 13th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

I see the Gimmick worked in West Virigina huh?

Mary WA   May 13th, 2008 6:20 pm ET

I dont' think these people are very bright. Do they pay attention to facts?

Steve Haddock   May 13th, 2008 6:20 pm ET

Hillary Clinton is always boasting that she can get the uneducated white people to vote for her… why is ther no comment from all of the experts on how dumb that rationale is? Geeez lets let all of the uneducated white people decide the future of America!!!!

Terrence (Winston Salem,NC)   May 13th, 2008 6:20 pm ET

That kinda thinking (or lack of it) would go with a thought that suggests that I give you a $5 bill and in exchange, I'll ask for $20 interest. if you agree to that, then you're likely to fall for this too.

tell the truth   May 13th, 2008 6:20 pm ET

This is sad. These are the people with Credit Cards with 24.99 interest, car loan 16.99 interest and bad home loan. American is all about keeping the poor down. They are not education which makes them a prime target. This has been going on for years. I wish people would wake up and look at facts. The gas taxes is a bad idea just like the homes loans that was created in 2002. The truth is most of them are either old, white, woman, poor are all the above. Which is Clintion target because the vote with feeling not facts. Please people vote with facts

Matt   May 13th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

I know what I'm going to say doesn't play out on the whole, but I think its absolutely necessary to say this. Why is it, that everytime they talk about Hillary and Barack supporters, when they divide them up and say she gets them and he gets them, that it is always Barack gets college educated voters, and she gets no college educated voters. This seems a pretty blatant indication that some (and I ABSOLUTELY STRESS SOME) of Hillary base are not the sharpest tools in the shed, and can be fooled by Washington gimmicks aka Bush gimmicks aka Republican gimmicks. Because politicians know these things, they take advantage of the common man and woman who may be struggling, and makes it seem like something will help them that won't. People need to realize that Barack is not some elitist cow, and just because he went to Harvard (don't let Hillary tell you she's not any less of a so called "elitist" than Obama, geez, she's got more money than him, always has and probably always will) doesn't mean he's not going to work for you in Washington. People must absolutely stop getting fooled by parlor tricks. I understand 100% if you vote because you feel the candidate is the best one for the job, but if you think Hillary is somehow fighting more for you, you're getting played.

Mike   May 13th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

How in the *beep* does she think she would be able to even give people the gas tax holiday for this summer? Last I checked she wasn't president yet, not even close. Or perhaps that's the new Clinton plan; skip the primaries, the convention and general election and just move right into the White House, because darn it, she's entitled to be there.

And how are the people that she has convinced that she can actually deliver a gas tax holiday this summer, stupid enough to fall for that line? Oh, stupid question on my part, I forgot the demographics of Hillary's core support, it's the very same people that fall for scams day in and day out, the under-educated and the elderly.

I wonder how many Hillary supporters have already been bilked out of their economic stimulus checks???

Wes   May 13th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

Michelle in Philly —– I do not believe you are racist if those are your true reasons but if you say that and then say you'll vote for McCain instead then I must question your real reasoning….. Hillary and Obamas policies are pratically Identical. And if you wanna look at contriversy type Clinton and Scandal in your search bar you'll be suprised.

To choose a man who admited his mistakes and denounces the bad ppl in his life is more reasonable than a man who supports a president that is responsible for 4k + deaths over a pointless war!!

Mike from Westchester   May 13th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

BTW: It's not $70 unless you're driving a tank 400 miles per week or a normal car 700 miles per week. In a Prius, you'd have to be putting on mileage at a rate of 65,000 miles per year.

You can save more per month by combining erands, walking on short trips, and eliminating a few unnecessary drives.

Hell, improper tire inflation costs you more than the gas tax.

The important thing is the long-term solution. Within 10 years, we should have solar panels on most every roof in American, many windfarms, and double our current average MPG (hybrids, etc.). We should achieve complete energy independance in 20 years without more drilling.

Nobody will remember the $28 they saved in the summer of 2008 if we take care of the big picture issues. A perfect example of why Obama is a better choice than Clinton.

John   May 13th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

In a society that craves instant gratification, I don't think anyone would be surprised… but to those who educate themselves on the matter, and anyone is capable of soing this, it is clearly a gimmick to pander for more votes for Clinton and McCain… Hillary would not be doing this if she were ahead… to those that care deeply about a minute savings, this will naturally be popular, but those who care about solutions (Hillary, where are you?..) this is clearly not the answer.

Mark Anthony   May 13th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

People please lets stop with the name calling, it's not that the Clinton supporters are uneducated it just they have been miss lead and they haven't check into this gas tax holiday for themselves.

It's like the people who agree with Rev. Wright, if you don't check the facts for yourself you will forever be a sheep.

Mike in Calgary   May 13th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

Some people are givers and others are takers. JFK said "Ask not what your country can do for you . Ask what you can do for your country."

Too many Americans want the benefits but not the burdens of being American.

The Gas tax Holiday tells you why McCain, Clinton and Obama want to be President. 2 want power for its own sake. One wants power to bring about change for the better, to deliver universal health care and enhanced educational and employment opportunitities for all, so that America can build a future.

If one wants CHANGE, the Choice is clear!

Ted G   May 13th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

Thanks for asking a stupid question and getting people to bite. Every expert and pundit has noted that this was a politcal hoax.

Nice try CNN trying to keep the soap opera going.

Retire Clintons   May 13th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

Exactly. Didn't Clinton say that her supporters are uneducated? a shepherd is just a head of flocks.

Aida   May 13th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Ludovic, judging on your use of grammar, it is doubtful you have a college degree.

Your arrogance and hateful comments are destroying the Democratic Party. It is my guess you want McCain in the White House come January.

Robbing Peter Paul to Pay Hill   May 13th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Putting Clinton on the ticket is not going to change the minds of people who simply don't like Obama because of his race or his name or his fashion sense. Clinton people who are actually voting on the basis of issues will vote for him anyway if it is between him and McCain. Also she has the outstanding issue of Peter Paul vs Clinton, that will be going to court about the time he will be super vulnerable. Putting her on the ticket is a really really bad idea.

MK LA   May 13th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Look at all you elitist Obama supporters. Mocking good hardworking people. They might not have a nice degree like the one's your mommies and daddies bought for you. But they have 100 times your common sense. Just because you went to school doesn't make you educated. Most of the smartest people in history never went to college. elitist

Hillary Independent 08 for America

Jean Alex   May 13th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

No wonder West Virginia has a high percentage if uneducated people.

GL   May 13th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

Oh Boy! West Virginia exit poll data!! Yippiee!!!! about as relevant as asking my three year old.

BS   May 13th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

Since when does the educated journalists look to the uneducated folks for advice on economy, politics, religion?

Only in an election when the "educated journalists" (Schneider) has a point to push and a candidate to push using corporate money. I smell a rat here.

Beverly, NYC   May 13th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

Michelle in Philly, how has Obama used RACE in this election.
Anyone looking at him sees a black man he cannot hide his skin color.
Hillary and her minnions were the one to bring up race, they protested loudly that Obama was getting the "black vote" while she was getting the high school diploma hard working whites. Yet you somehow believe that he manipulated Hillary into saying these things and showing her true colors.

You should have stopped your argument with you don't trust him because he is inexperienced. I guess you don't mind liars, with questionable family values. Perhaps you can tell me what experience Hillary has at being President. Both she and Obama have basically the same resumes. I get it Hillary is married to a former President so she must know what to to do! If being in Bill Clinton's presence were all that it took, then Monica Lewinsky and Gennifer Flowers are also qualified to run for office.

Lin Lo   May 13th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

Wow, there are a lot of misinformed people on here if you think the gas tax holiday is anything more than a GIMMICK. I could use the money as much as anyone, but I have also researched it. THERE IS NOT ONE ECONOMIST THAT BELIEVES THIS IS A GOOD IDEA. NOT ONE. First of all, it has to go through CONGRESS, and then be signed by BUSH - it won't happen for this summer anyway. Second, Obama voted for this when he was in the Illinois Senate and found out it DOESN"T WORK. That's why he's against it. He learned from that mistake. It may give you a few dollars in savings IF the oil companies don't just raise the price more to cover the loss of the tax, BUT it will take money away from infrastructure (roads, bridges, etc.) which is already hurting and will cost thousands of jobs. Oh, but you'll have $28 more in your pocket. This is like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Dennis   May 13th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

ride a bike to the corner store and you'll save even more money and you'll get some freakin exercise!

Rich   May 13th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

"I've already been put on the "do not post" list for comments but I'll write anyway. It is ironic that fewer Obama's backers t like the idea when he ran it 3 times as a state senator for a 5% refund when gas was $2 a gallon. I expect CNN will find this somehow offensive and it, like my other comments will never be posted. Hillary '08 and '12!"

Kim, there's nothing offensive about this fact you're pointing to. However, the upshot of those gas tax breaks was that drivers didn't benefit at all from it; the oil company's pocketed most of the difference. He has admitted to this being a mistake he learned from. I respect someone who can admit when they were wrong and learn from their mistakes. Definitely a critical quality to look for in a commander-in-chief. Otherwise you might get into a something like, say, a really bad war but be too stubborn to see it can't succeed.
