(CNN) — The economy is the top issue of concern among Democratic voters in West Virginia, according to just released exit polls.

Nearly two-thirds of voters named the economy, compared to 19 percent who said Iraq and 14 percent who said healthcare.

The rule in politics is when the economy is bad, the economy is the issue. But how bad is it for West Virginia Democrats?

Well, we asked them: How has the recession affected you? Forty-five percent said it's affecting them a great deal. And almost as many said they've been somewhat affected by the recession. Only 11 percent said they had not been affected much, or not at all.

The Economy is always the issue. This is the reason why Iraq war should have never been authorized.

Don't Go There   May 13th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Yes, it is the economy and GW will be the worst president in modern times who completely ignored the economy. Why? Because he was waging a personal war.

He makes me so angry….tick tock….when is he leaving?

pam   May 13th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Of course it is the economy but it sure won't get better with McCain. We can't afford his war in money or lives of our children.
Obama

Franky   May 13th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Wasn't this the same issue for like 3+ months??? I think there's no secret, I mean, we all know what's going with our economy. It just makes me a little sad because no one really wants to talk about the Iraq war. I'm telling you guys, the Iraq war should be up there. I mean, if the Dems wanna mention a tide between the Iraq war and the economy, then why aren't we talking about the war more and its implications????

Marcia   May 13th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Obama does not understand the economy.

Placed his student debt onhis credit cards.

Went to Rezko for a secret home deal.

FORECLOSE OBAMA !

another day another dollar   May 13th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

if it's "the economy", what has Hillary done?
….it's more like "she's white let's vote for her"….redneckville strikes again, Annie-get-your gun type union bred blue collars in WV, nothing more.

Rebecca - CA   May 13th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

What is the message from today's primary in W. VA? It confirms that the uneducated and under-employed are not voting for the best interest of the entire country. Even those people interviewed in that state indicated that the small number of residents that actually complete a college education (just 15%), leave the state….sounds like a state problem to me. Do they really think Hillary Clinton will change the economy of their state? The problems of the country are much more complex than the economy in W. VA. We need an intelligent, honest, and respected leader to set the "entire" country in a new direction. Don't dismiss racism as a primary reason for this win…. we may be more politically correct in 2008, but we should not be in denial about the existence of the covert racism which unfortunately, still exists and is concentrated in certain areas of our country.

Obama v McCain   May 13th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

I;m still trying to figure out how Clinton supporters can tout she will have the pop vote in the end…i did graduate.. i know my math..hmmm what did i miss?

Sue   May 13th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Good thing GW had a much publicized wedding bash for his daughter this weekend, to rub salt in everyone's wounds.

Sandra   May 13th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Yes it is the economy. The GOP destroyed it with this war. Obama is the man for the job.

Kate   May 13th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

So let me get this straight. They are worried about the economy but yet favor Hillary. Hmmm…the same woman who dismissed the expert scholar economists who all said her gas tax plan was useless. The same woman who wants the taxpayers to bail out mortgage companies. The same woman who has to dig into her own pocket (which, by the way is a big old tax write-off) to finance her campaign. The same woman who delayed the release of her tax forms. Perhaps West Virginia should stop looking at the color of Obama's skin and look at the color of the disappearing money in their bank accounts because if Hillary gets the nomination, thats all they will have. Memories.

AJ, IL   May 13th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

Exactly! This explains Hillary polling lead! It's the economy stupid! And poor and uneducated West Virginians hear the Clinton name (even though it is Hillary's last name reference) and think of the 1990s economy without understanding what made the 1990s economy so good.

These same Clinton supporters will mostly support Obama if Bill Clinton campaigns hard in the rural areas of West Virginia touting a Democratic Administration under Obama is way better for the economy than a Republican Administration under McCain.

Marshall   May 13th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

Yes, I am concerned about the economy. What I am waiting for is the plan to fix it.

Pam   May 13th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

The economy is in the tank because of the war that both Hillary and McCain approved.

Terrence (Winston Salem,NC)   May 13th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

To all Hillary supporters, its been a tough race, but Obama is not stealing the election, he played by the rules in place. Rules that Hillary also agreed to. If you don't agree with the rules, thats fine, loby to change them for the next election, but they are the current rules in place.

Obama is not buying the election. His money came from over a million supporters that believe in him. They voted with their wallets.

The sad truth is that Hillary was overconfident that she would be the nominee by Super Tuesday and she completely screwed up her campaign because of it. Some year we will have a woman president, it just wont be next year. The time has come to rally around the nominee, just as she would expect if she was that nominee.

Mike Birmingham, AL   May 13th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Dems:

Pay no attention to the group that is posing as Hillary supporters trying to rally support for McCain or Hillary as an independent candidate. They are just Operation Chaosers trying to stir things up.

HILLARY CLINTON IS ALREADY THE TRUE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!
As much as 30% of Obama's primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. These Republicans have been gaming the caucuses where it is easier to vote cheat. This is why Obama has not been able to win the BIG! states primaries. Even with Republican vote cheating help.
Hillary Clinton has been out manned, out gunned, and out spent 2 and 3 to 1. Yet Obama has only been able to manage a very tenuous, and questionable tie with Hillary Clinton.
If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. Because the Republican vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate. All of this vote fraud and republican manipulation has made Obama falsely look like a much stronger candidate than he really is. The democratic party needs to fix this outrage. I suggest a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket. Everyone needs to throw all your support to Hillary Clinton NOW! So you can end this outrage against US the voter, and against democracy.*******************************

Patricia Gardiner   May 13th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Get real you three. Blame everything on G.W. Bush. Who will you have to kick around once he leaves office? I promised myself if Clinton got into office I'd leave the country. Thank God we are going to be rid of the Clintons finally as they destroyed this country.

rod   May 13th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Hillary cant beat Obama on the economy issue so she is saying that she is been WHITE all her life to the voters in WV! Hillary has lost and all she can do now is make herself look ridiculous; however she is hurting Obama not on policy issues but by continuous inflammatory racial comments.

Also all this talk of Hillary or her surrogates Wesley Clark, Madeline Albright, Richard Holbrook, Joe Biden and Joe Liberman in Obamas presidency, is outrageous. Hillary and her surrogates were clinging to the war swords along with Bush just before the Iraq invasion. Obama should not give these two-faced democrats a chance to mess up his presidency. I would trust more Colin Powel than any of Hillary or Bill's friends!

Of course it's the economy - it's worst in small states!

Go Obama!

When Obama becomes president - those voters in WV will cry and thank Obama!

DEMS IN 2008   May 13th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Obviously these percentages are wrong. The HRC zealots who would rather vote for a third term McBush than their elected party nominee must think GWB has done well with the economy and that the U.S. is on the right track since they indicate that they would rather vote for McCain! How do you gain Presidential experience unless you have been or are the President? My wife is a doctor, has been for ten years, doesn't mean I can prescribe medication!

HRC supporters who would rather vote McCain must not mind that we have lost millions of jobs in the first qtr, 200,000 homes foreclosed in the first qtr, 4,000 lives lost in GWB's war, and that gas is $4 per gallon, soon to be $6 per gallon in the summer months!

Not sure about you, but that bothers me and it can't continue! With McCain this downward spiraling trend started by GWB carries on!

There'll aways be a balance between domestic (economy) and foreign issues. Administrations are usually better at one than the other. Let's hope there's enough talent in the winning administration to tackle both responsibly.

My vote for talent potential still goes with Obama.

LOL! We could have predicted 60 years ago how West Virgina would come out today! THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN! LOL!

It is clear to me what the difference is, the states West of the Mississippi or more progressive and educated. A lot states on the on the east side of the Mississippi still live in the past never fully understanding those who live around them. They stay locked up in there homes always afraid of those who are different.

Obama will win every state West of the Mississippi with the exception of Arizona McCain’s home state. Obama is well loved out here in the West we always look into a mans heart and see his soul . That is how the West was won we always look ahead. We do not have all the problems you have on the east side of the Mississippi, we always look forward instead of backwards.

The hate and racism you have handed down from generation to generation in the East does play well out hear in Gods Country. We are not perfect out hear butt we will give a man a honest hearing.

silence do good   May 13th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

But don't forget, Obama says it is always about race first! No matter how WV turns out, the loss will be the fault of racism of "typical white" voters. Watch - he will get someone from his campaign to say it.

It is always #1 on the blame / whine list of the great Divider - I mean unifier.

As a liberal I hate seeing someone use race for his own personal gains.

Demo Dem   May 13th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

All of the uneduacated simple white Democrats that you, Howard Dean took for granted, will be voting for John McCain for President.

So chalk up another loss for Deans Dozen. I would rather die than vote for Obama. All of my Democrat friends say the same. In reality I am glad, because Dean you turned your back on us, shoved Obama down our throats, now we're throwing up.

Seems like you old school Dems, Dean, Kennedy, Kerry really pissed us off this time. You turned your back on the Democrat's most viable candidate, Hillary. Now we are going to return the favor. I am going to turn my back on YOUR CHOICE Howard Dean, and will be voting Republican for the first time in my life.

At least I know McCain is a patriot, has pride, and shows and has shown his loyalty to his country. Therefore I will vote for McCain with a smile on my face.

Dave Busey   May 13th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

So voters said the economy was their top issue.
How was the West VA exit poll question worded? Was it of the type
"Name whatever issue is most important to you."
or was it of the type
"Here is a short list of issues. Which of these (which we have prepicked to ask you about) are important to you."?
I would really like to see the exact wording of the group of questions which led to this printed report. I also saw that live report by William Schneider on CNN TV. My question was not answered there, either. Only a summary was given, with no record of the precise wording of the questions which they asked.

Will you please show us your questions, CNN?

Heather P   May 13th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

As WV voter I will say that the economy is a huge concern. I would like, however, for the snarky media categorization of WV as "Bush Democrats" or "over 65 voters" to ease up; I am neither, and balk at both. I proudly carried a Kerry/Edwards sticker on my car until the current race as a reminder that I did not vote for Bush; I did not vote for him in 2000, either. I am also hardly near 65. I am not alone in either "category".

I was an Edwards supporter who did a great deal of research on both campaigns after he left the race, in order to make an informed decision as to whom I would support. A huge difference for me in this election was that Hillary spent a great deal of time here talking to us and making her stances and plans known. She cared enough to reach out, and the ecomomy was an issue of hers and one very dear to me as a struggling blue-collar worker. Obama all but blew us off; indeed, he is even going to make a speech before elections have concluded here today, all but outright saying we do not matter in my estimation. This does not endear him to me, although I like the man and believe him to be a good person. I voted for Hillary because I believe she has my best interests at heart, and she cared enough to come speak to me about her plans.

ed   May 13th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

When Clinton wins West Virginia by 20 or more points over Obama, maybe he can claim the results aren't legitimate because:

there were no AA or college student voters,

he didn't have time to actively campaign there because he is busy campaigning against Mc Cain already,

they are all bitter and cling to their guns and religion anyway,

or what?

Barack allowed her to shine in the limelight, by not campaigning in this State! In hindsight he should not have given her this respect. ((she certainly wouldn't ) He could have campaigned "aggressively" like Hillary falsely claims, but he is the better candidate, so I won't fault him for that!

Because, after the Dean & Co. gift Obama with the nomination, he's going to get beaten like a drum. The country wasn't ready for McGovern, and it's not ready for an amatuer like Obama.

cubanamericanwoman - OC - CA   May 13th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

Hey Jimmy Velman..

Obama does not need a selfish liar to win the nomination. To the contrary, her name on the ticket will turn off MANY voters, especially Independents and Republicans.

OBAMA/HAGEL

OBAMA/BLOOMBERG

THOSE are the winning tickets.

spencer   May 13th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

We know its the economy, were not as stupid as you might think……

Paul   May 13th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Hillary knows what to do, she has a plan

Hillary 08

Yes she will!

Hillary, we are with you all the way!

GL   May 13th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Hilbilly math. Only thing today proves is how *ss-backwards large sections of this country still are, starting with West Virginia…

Marvin Geer   May 13th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

How many important issues can even be considered if the United States does not provide the National Security desparately needed for our social structure to survive?

Where is the Powerful Corporations if business is threatened from within and without? I would imagine these Powerful Tycoons will be off shore where they are close enough to U.S. Might, but just far enough away to avoid taxes.

Isn't it clear to anyone that National Security is first and foremost on the fix it list?

Robin   May 13th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Just wondering….If WV primary means so little, why are Obama supporters being so nasty. Is this the long promised change? Let's see, the past 8 years we have had to endure nasty disgusting far right attack machine now we're supposed to put up with 4-8 years of ugly mouthed far left nuts. Great. Is this the unity that Obama promised, can't wait.

Cable74   May 13th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

Whoever wins will not make a difference!!! If you think that over the next 4 years anyone of these candidates will make a difference you are clearly delusional.
So if I get this right the president will….
Bring the troops home
Reverse the economy to a positive state
and what else cause i have never seen a president do that in a four year term. We have a longer road than November folks be smart and dont buy into the promises. This years election may be historical but not very impressive in any way.

J. Indiana   May 13th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

If the economy is the issue, why isn't Obama proposing real measures that will give relief to Americans the way Hillary and McCain have been doing with the gas tax relief proposal? Because he is only talk and is just concerned about beating Hillary any way he can including leaving Florida and Michigan out of the 50 State equation.

Shirley-Ohio   May 13th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

I wonder if they understand that problem is world wide and not just state wide.

Lucille Atlanta   May 13th, 2008 6:14 pm ET

Why is it that CNN is not showing the voting count on the West Viginia primary as they did in every other state ?
Is it because Hillary is not as far ahead as they were expecting ?
I think her time is over and she needs to go ahead and endorse Obama to reunite the party.

Sherri   May 13th, 2008 6:14 pm ET

Did you know that Senator Obama introduced the STOP FRAUD Act to increase penalties for mortgage fraud and provide more protections for low-income homebuyers, well before the current subprime crisis began?

Bukky   May 13th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Marcia May 13th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Obama does not understand the economy.

Placed his student debt onhis credit cards.

HE JUST PAYED OF HIS STUDENT LOAN DEBTS AND HE HIS 47… BEING THAT HE GRADUATED HARVARD AT 29 THATS ABOUT RIGHT.

HILLARY DOESNT THINK ECONOMIST KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT,

MS in SC   May 13th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Let's hope that the voters are paying attention. If voters analyze and evaluate the economy with their own self-interest in mind, it is hard to see how they would vote for anyone who doesn't have an agenda that emphasizes plans to reform. That agenda should include reform of fuel production, health care, the future of social security, support for education at all levels, process of producing legislation in Congress, fuel standards for all vehicles, etc. The list of reforms needed urgently has become longer and longer as the GWB administration wears on! I hope that we end up with both Obama and Clinton on a Democratic ticket since I just don't have confidence that Obama has the ability and experience to do the job without some serious help.

HILLARY CAN WIN IN NOVEMBER!!   May 13th, 2008 6:17 pm ET

SOME OF OBAMAS SUPPORTERS REALLY NEED TO LEARN HOW TO SPELL!!!!!!

AND WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THE UNEDUCATED ONES?

WHATEVER!

I HAVE A QUESTION— WHY CAN'T OBAMA WIN WEST VIRGINIA IF THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS SO IN LOVE WITH HIM?

THAT SHOULD KEEP THEM BUSY AWHILE!!!!!!

GO HILLARY!!!!!!!!!

Bukky   May 13th, 2008 6:18 pm ET

HILLARY DOESNT THINK ECONOMIST KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT…

do you really want her fixing this problem without people that know what they are doing….

Hillary is a lawyer… ask any lawyer. If we were good at math WE WOULDNT BE LAWYERS

you want a lawyer to do your taxes or an accountant? and judging by Hillarry finance situation… she doesnt know ANY math

Jeanne   May 13th, 2008 6:20 pm ET

YES! When are the candidates going to talk about how that plan to stimulate the economy, bring about an environment that promotes the creation of good paying jobs where people can earn a decent living. When are the candidates going to tell us something important.

HILLARY CAN WIN IN NOVEMBER!!   May 13th, 2008 6:20 pm ET

OH, DON'T WORRY MARCIA IT WILL ALL COME OUT IF OBAMA GETS THE NOMINATION!!!!!!!!

WRIGHT, REZKO, WILLIAM AIRES,LARRY SINCLAIR ALL THE DIRT!!!!!!

OBAMA WILL BE GONE!!!!!!!!!

GO HILLARY!!!!!!!!!

Brent (Saskatoon, Canada)   May 13th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

As a Canadian, if I were a voter in the United States. I would be in a constant dilemma if the two Candidates for President were Obama McCain. They both seem like very humble men who have a direction they want to take the country. To slice and dice them down to their most finite flaws would be redundant as both men I am sure could do a good job.

I think Hillary is out of the picture and there is a good reason for that. Bravo America!

HILLARY CAN WIN IN NOVEMBER!!   May 13th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

(IT'S NOT TO LATE ) FROM ABOVE,

YOU GOT IT SO RIGHT!!!!!!!!!

I COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT BETTER!!!!!!

GO HILARY!!!!!!!

Okay   May 13th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

from Demo Dem:
At least I know McCain is a patriot, has pride, and shows and has shown his loyalty to his country. Therefore I will vote for McCain with a smile on my face.
____
Interesting that those seem to be your only qualifications for president. We currently have a president in office who loves his country and has pride and loyalty. Unfortunately that did not make him a good president. While its important that the president of our country loves our country, it's also important that he/she has a brain and sides with you on the issues you hold dear. I don't see how any real democrat can willingly vote for someone who goes against every issue the democratic party considers important. I believe that anyone who claims to vote for McCain just because they don't like Obama is not a real democrat and a republican in disguise on these blogs.

Vote the Issues 08

Mike in Calgary   May 13th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

The Trillions sent overseas to IRAQ by reason of McCain and Clinton authorizing the war have taxed the American Dollar and the American Economy. The War in Iraq has wreaked Havoc on the Economy.

America needs a Change. As Sheryl Crow sang, "A CHANGE WOULD DO YOU GOOD".

Mike

MK LA   May 13th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

All good working Democrats who care about America need to write Hilary and urge her to run as an Independent. She is the most qualified person in this race to lead this country. Choose your country over your party.
Howard Dean and the DNC have suppressed voters in Florida and Michagan who clearly chose Hillary. She has led the liberal cause against the headwinds of conservatism for over a decade and now we are asked to abandon her for a slick packaged unqualified Obama!!
how has he helped change Illinois? he didn't How can he change Washington, he has laid out no plan!!! He has spent most his time in washington running for president….. he is not qualified. I am a life long democrat who willl vote for Hilary or McCain before him.

Karen   May 13th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

Most WVs like Clinton's gas tax idea, don't they?
Didn't Clinton say that her voters are uneducated?
A shepherd is just a head of flocks.
With this shepherd, this flock lands nowhere.
That explains economy.

Heather P   May 13th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

As a WV democrat I will NOT vote for McCain. Please stop saying I will, CNN. I want the election process to play out, without the media saying it is over. Once the process is OVER, and the Democrat convention CONCLUDED, I will support whatever democrat is the frontrunner. I just hope if is does end up being Obama (and, again, it is not over) he invests some time in our state and does not write us off.

Dayahka   May 13th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

Just goes to show that the American people are boneheads–for George's war in Iraq and the general attitude of his liberal, big-government administration towards borrow-and-spend financing of wars and consumption had everything to do with the way the economy is now.
