Michelle Obama takes heat from Tennessee Republicans

Tennessee Republicans took aim at Michelle Obama Thursday.
Tennessee Republicans took aim at Michelle Obama Thursday.

(CNN) – In a preview of the potential political onslaught Michelle Obama may face in the fall, the Tennessee Republican Party unveiled a new Web video Thursday that highlights her controversial comment earlier this year saying she was proud of America "for the first time in my adult life."

The four-minute video coincides with Mrs. Obama's visit to the state for a Democratic Party event later Thursday. It features several Tennesseans saying why they are proud of America while repeatedly cutting to Mrs. Obama's comments.

"The Tennessee Republican Party has always been proud of America. To further honor the occasion of Mrs. Obama’s visit, the Tennessee Republican Party has requested the playing of patriotic music by radio stations across the state," said a statement on the party's Web site that accompanied the video.

"While Mrs. Obama has trouble being proud of the country where she earned degrees from Princeton University and Harvard Law School and then became a multi-millionaire, her husband makes statements that belittle average Americans’ response to the difficulties of life."

The Obama campaign called the attack "shameful."

"This is a shameful attempt to attack a woman who has repeatedly said she wouldn't be here without the opportunities and blessings of this nation," said Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan. "The Republican Party's pathetic attempts to use the same smear tactics to win elections have failed in Mississippi, failed in Louisiana, and will fail in November because the American people are looking for a positive vision of real change.

This just in to the news room: Republican Party has all the nuance of a sledgehammer to the skull and uses fear-mongering-flag-waving rah-rahism to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

    SHOCKER!

    Film at 11.

Seriously? This is all you got? C'mon Republicans! Now you're just like the little boy whistling as he walks by the graveyard to keep up his spirits.

I'm a Tennessean. I knew what Mrs. Obama meant. So what is the problem? To some degree, it is projected guilt. . .the shame that some Americans "really" feel for their legacy of and participation in a history racism and hatred. I know. I grew up in West Tennessee!

And YES this is just the tip of the iceberg of what is yet too come. If the democratic primaries were considered tough let's see what the republicans are going to come up with!

After what George W. Bush said in Israel and all his failed policies which they supported and almost 5,000 of our brave men and women killed because of Bush's lies, lost jobs, high food and gasoline prices, borrowing money from China, all the damage Bush has done in almost 8 years, Tennessee Republicans ought to be talking about they are ashame Bush. Furthermore, I would be ashame to say I'm a Republican.

Remember how the Republicans brought up the Monica Lewinsky scandal in 1998?

It didn't work- the GOP lost 5 seats that year because they talked more about interns than issues.

It hasn't worked this year either in two special elections held so far that they lost.

Too late and day short almost a half year short. Republicians you are going to have to do better than this. At the state we are in I am not to proud of America. We still have to many serious issues to address to say I would go leaping building saying this is the happiest time of my life. People are suffering and have been suffering for a long time and our so call leaders are just now getting a glimps of what the America people have been going thru. I mean they have been so busy with lining their own pockets they haven't paid attention to the rest of America. I can most certainly understand what she is saying. The only reason you have a problem with her saying this is because your party has done all the damage and you don't want to take the responsibilty of excepting the mess your party has created.

How low can the RNC sink. Do they even have a plan for leading this country out of the huge mess it's in because of them. Do they actullay think this will solve any one of the urgent problems we are facing everyday. How can they be so totally moronic as to believe that as I struggle to put gas in my car, but food, pay my utilities that I CARE about this. November can't get here soon enough.

Lame!! Lame!!! Her statements taken out of context for political gain!! She said what many of us have been thinking. Feeling ashamed of being American because of the loss of our respect around the world- Iraq war, guantanamo, water boarding. It is time for change and Obama or Clinton both represent that change from 8 years of tyranny!

LOL! This is crazy to me, they waste so much time throwing mud on their opponents that it's no wonder their party is in complete disarray and ripe for a dramatic Democratic takeover.

Why is poor Mrs Obama getting picked on? Her comments match the Rev Wright and her own thesis about how proud she is to be an American. Michelle, honey, sweetie, this is just the beginning. Get ready for the games to begin!!!!

    Dear Republicans:

Should Democrats retort about how out of touch Cindy McCain is with the average person, and how that means her husband has no interest in helping average Americans?

This kind of B.S. is why Republicans across the country are losing. They deserve it. They're not the party of Lincoln and Roosevelt, and they're barely the party of Reagan and Gingrich.

She is viewed as one of the "most miserable millionare" by many on several news stations.
She has commented about 'mean" Americ, I have not been proud to be an AMerican and has been putting down our beautiful nation for months.

This is such old news. Most people didn't care then, and they obviously don't care now. Tennessee Republicans need to find something to offer from their candidate, not dig up dirt on the opponent. Mean GOP politics!!!!!

  25. Joan, Ontario,

She didn't say it was the first time in her life that she was proud of her country. Of course she has always been proud of her country. She said now she is REALLY proud of her country for the advances that have been made. Think about it. This is the first time a woman and black person have even had a chance to go this far. Since she fits into both categories, of course this would make her even more excited and proud. Also, the Democratic party has increased it's roll by hundreds of thousands this year so this is a real advancement too. She was just saying that she is even more proud this year. Way too much was written into her statement.
