Michelle Obama takes heat from Tennessee Republicans

Tennessee Republicans took aim at Michelle Obama Thursday.
Tennessee Republicans took aim at Michelle Obama Thursday.

(CNN) – In a preview of the potential political onslaught Michelle Obama may face in the fall, the Tennessee Republican Party unveiled a new Web video Thursday that highlights her controversial comment earlier this year saying she was proud of America "for the first time in my adult life."

The four-minute video coincides with Mrs. Obama's visit to the state for a Democratic Party event later Thursday. It features several Tennesseans saying why they are proud of America while repeatedly cutting to Mrs. Obama's comments.

"The Tennessee Republican Party has always been proud of America. To further honor the occasion of Mrs. Obama’s visit, the Tennessee Republican Party has requested the playing of patriotic music by radio stations across the state," said a statement on the party's Web site that accompanied the video.

"While Mrs. Obama has trouble being proud of the country where she earned degrees from Princeton University and Harvard Law School and then became a multi-millionaire, her husband makes statements that belittle average Americans’ response to the difficulties of life."

The Obama campaign called the attack "shameful."

"This is a shameful attempt to attack a woman who has repeatedly said she wouldn't be here without the opportunities and blessings of this nation," said Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan. "The Republican Party's pathetic attempts to use the same smear tactics to win elections have failed in Mississippi, failed in Louisiana, and will fail in November because the American people are looking for a positive vision of real change.

Funny how honesty gets you in trouble. Michelle Obama, like her husband, is learning what honesty buys you in a market where lies are the quick currency and the truth is expensive. God bless them both, and God bless America.

OK looks like we Americans are the worst people in the world. Last 7 years we have ruined our economy b y being stupid and going after IRAQ. We created more terrorists by our policy of not talking with words but with guns.
If our President was an intelligent one we would have a good economy and would have good relations with the rest of the world.

The first time to be "really proud" is not the same as the first time to be proud. Maybe that's why the accurate quote of Mrs. Obama is never aired in the smear campaigns. I believe she just meant she was proudest of the country at this time. Being "really" proud does not negate all of the times that she has been proud in the past. She's just voicing a degree of difference in degrees.

If this is the best the Republicans can do, they will live to lose again.

I love Michelle. I think she is a great American. Clearly her message was taken out of context and she explained her comments. She clearly mispoke. Tennessee Republican Party should go take a hike.

Here's an idea: Why don't the republicans run on their record of achievement over the last 8 years. (6 of which they held all three branches of government)…

They can talk about jobs…… (no, wait..)
They can talk about healthcare….. (no, wait…
They can talk about the economy under their watch….. (no… wait)
They can talk about infrastructure.. (darn, forgot about that bridge..wait)
They can talk about energy (um…. no.. wait…
They can talk about home ownership… (sigh.. this is getting difficult.. )
    SECURITY.. year…. security… they GOT bin laden.. (um… well… wait…
    sigh……..

In grade school we were taught to read between the lines – of what we read and what we are told. Reading between the lines of what Mrs. Obama has said, it seems fairly clear that she is referring to the debacle that is the Bush legacy. World opinion of the USA is at its lowest level level in memory. WHile, on a micro scale there remains, most asuredly, many reasons to be proud of your country, on a macro level, it is quite a different story.

Mrs. Obama's words were poorly chosen but I strongly believe that they have been taken out of context and spun to mean something entirely contrary to what was intended.

Let's make another tv Ad that says:

"What I was clearly talking about is that I am proud in how Americans
are engaging in the political process and everyone understand what I meant. Only republicans want to mislead Americans"

I am sick and tired of the media and the foes of Barack Obama taking every little word a person says and twisting and contorting it so that it will damage the person who said it. How petty. Have any of these numbskulls actually listened to what Michelle Obama said? She said "Really Proud" and not just “Proud”. So who said she wasn’t proud at all? This kind of stuff is just flat out BS and I believe that Michelle Obama will go on to be one of the most beloved and respected First Ladies ever.

The republican party is in for a real rude wakeup call in November!

If you are ALWAYS proud of America you aren't being critical enough. The US is the best in the word by far! But its not perfect and to pretend it is is a very 'conservative' thing to do and means there will never be progress!
