Obama toured an automobile plant in Michigan Wednesday.

(CNN) – Barack Obama has personally apologized to a Michigan television reporter for referring to her as "sweetie" as she tried to ask a question.

The comment came earlier Wednesday when WXYZ reporter Peggy Agar asked Obama at a campaign stop, “How are you going to help the American auto workers?”

Obama told Agar to "hold on, sweetie," and said he would address that issue with her later. Agar said she never got an answer to her question.

According to WXYZ, Obama personally left a voice message for Agar Wednesday afternoon, apologizing for both not answering the question and for calling her "sweetie."

"That's a bad habit of mine," Obama said in the message. "I do it sometimes with all kinds of people. I mean no disrespect and so I am duly chastened on that front.

"Feel free to call me back. I expect that my press team will be happy to try to make it up to you whenever we are in Detroit next," he added.

Obama also took some heat in Pennsylvania last month for referring to a factory worker as "sweetie."

I feel for him on this one. I have the same habit. I started calling my kids that when they were small. Now they are grown, it's a habit and I call everyone "sweetie" or "hon." Guess we'll both have to break that habit, the next President and this old white lady too.

Dont you have more important things to be reporting CNN????

Thats a joke!!

Joe   May 14th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

Big deal. Is this really newsworthy? CNN grasping at straws

Perry   May 14th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

RIdiculous! CNN PLEASE! Post about the HUGE endorsement that Barack Obama just got instead of these petty meaningless articles. I understand that some of these stories are of interest and I am not criticizing your reporting or saying that you are biased. But should not there be some priority given to the largest endorsement of the race so far?

Independent99999   May 14th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

What is wrong in calling a person, sweetie?
Am I missing something here

O'Bama 08   May 14th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

Is this for real?! Who is offended by that? Who runs this ticker anyway. Sometimes they report the dumbest stuff. Like that posting about Hillary being in the lead of the popular vote………..in what election?! When dumb stuff like this happens that no one cares about and when idiots start making wholely false claims like Hillary is in the lead, why doesn't CNN just ignore these stories?!?!!?!!!

EDW   May 14th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

Anybody with a kid probably has made that same mistake.

Sue Marie, MI   May 14th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

Hey, Sweetie, you're not getting my vote.

Michelle Casanova   May 14th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

Why would anyone get worked up about someone saying sweetie?
That's dumb. Obama shouldn't have to apologize for that.

Chris from NY   May 14th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

My boss calls me honey. It doesn't mean I am his wife or girl friend. People have a habit of calling other people pet names that may not resonate with all kinds of people. Please accept his apology. I am sure he didn't mean any harm.

r.   May 14th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

How disgusting that we, who would like to listen to Barack Obama's speech after John Edwards' endorsement, have to listen to Bill Schneider and Lou Dobbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!They are not candidates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to listen to Obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wake up, CNN. I'm sick of you pushing for Clinton. Give it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Respons to Nick in Las Vegas   May 14th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

What do you mean it shouldn't be about the math? One and one makes up two, more states won, more delegates (super or pledge) and winning the popular vote. I don't see how you can't make it about the math.

Making up a fifth way of calculations votes still doesn't give Clinton an argument.

PS. This wasn't breaking news!!!

Heck,

aren't we getting a little far fetched with all this. The michigan
reporter should get a grip, and maybe take a job with the
weather channel.

What is the News Media coming to, anything to get a story.

Bobby tray   May 14th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

The media goes at it again. They got to have something negative about Obama so they cover this nonsense.

Niky   May 14th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

Well, I guess people will learn to move on… he is a human being.

Olivia   May 14th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

Don't apologize, Obama! Maybe you're just like the old acorn. Sweetie isn't so bad.

Joe P   May 14th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

If people are seriously going to get upset about being called sweetie then something is wrong here.

Rob   May 14th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

How do his supporters let him get off using terms like "sweetie" towards women and get irate if someone mistakenly hits a racial nerve or cites a demographic. Do blacks take precedent over women on the political correctness scale?

Independent   May 14th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Cnn is trying to make a big deal out of this. It happens all the time, and there is nothing derogatory in it. Give it a break Clinton News Network. How about mentioning the super delegate he got from Wisconsin this evening - so doesn't that make 5 today for him and 1 for her? Report news CNN, not nonsense!

Brien   May 14th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Really!? This is what we are talking about!!! Im sure there is plenty of stuff to attack Obama on, why then are we belittling him for calling someone "sweetie". WOW

Marge Hibbing Mn   May 14th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

Oh yeah and they will run up and tell him to bend over so they can kiss his butt, like always. No matter what in the heck this thing does everybody ha ha's and ho ho's and lets him go…

Gee wonder what he will do when McCain beats his butt.

James   May 14th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

Oh my God, how is this news. We all use the word "sweetie" all the time. Obama is an ordinary person. We should get used to it. This is worse then tabloid reporting. Reporters stalk him with his gym cloths and while he is wearing jeans. Now he is making headlines for using the word "sweetie". America… we are better than that.

Antonio   May 14th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

Let the Spin begin…

Marie in Ohio   May 14th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

Yes, he should apologize. He and Edwards are the good old boys now. Obama's lack of respect for women is just another of his shortcomings and another reason not to vote for him along with the rest of his baggage.

His disgusting remarks about Senator Clinton are just another reason that I am a DEMOCRAT for McCain if Hillary is not the nominee.

HH   May 14th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

SWEETIE, I would take that as a compliment.

This reporter must need a new job or pay raise.

LOU DOBBS, WATCH OUT...YOUR HEAD IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE!   May 14th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

call the women "sweetie," "dear," and "hon…" (honey) but i guess we all have that…. gotta be careful with that one,,, since the sweetie in the office or shop can file an EEO complaint against the offending party, and that looks like hell on the personnel file…..

Please put aside the pettiness and think about you and your future before casting your vote in the fall.

Two more signs of elitism at work: 1) Obama's remarks and 2) Edwards artificial endorsement of Obama, when he obviously is a weak general election candidate. Elitists will not decide the next President.

Jay from the west   May 14th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Terrence (Winston Salem,NC)   May 14th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

Here we go again. CNN should be ashamed. Now we gonna have "sweetie-gate". You guys are getting Clinton-ish.

Minnesota Fats   May 14th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

I'm so glad CNN has also decided to report the fact that Clinton stated her reference to "hard-working white voters" was a mistake. Great journalism…keep it up.

Stupid story. He has two little girls, do you know how much sleep this man gets? Anyway, I don't like to be called sweetie or honey except by my sweeties or honeys, but its cool he understands that subjugation enough to call her and apologize. Wonder how many times McSame or Bush call women sweety?

Oh yeah, but this is a liberal media SNARK

In a related news report, the Clinton campaign announced today that oranges are actually purple. In their scenario, you simply ignore the color yellow in the red/yellow combination that gives you the color of an orange and pretend that blue is combined instead. Clearly, oranges are purple and Hillary is ahead in the popular vote….

Tony, Miami   May 14th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

why don't you write about the way Obama welcome Senator Edward at a rally this afternoon in Michigan. It was just wonderful to see both of them. This is the VP Obama need. With Hillary he will always have to look at his back not knowing when she will stab him like he always do.

Suheb Memon   May 14th, 2008 7:20 pm ET

How is this news? I live in Detroit, and all I say to the people over at WXYZ is "get over it!". Is there not other news in the world to report other than when Obama called somebody sweetie? Give me a break. CNN is slowly transforming into a "who said what website". WHO CARES?

Kelechi Okoro   May 14th, 2008 7:20 pm ET

I think it's pretty funny that this is even important enough to make it to the news… I guess this goes to show degree of scrutiny that goes with running for president… Question is, could something like this actually sway the minds of voters?

All American   May 14th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

I don't beleive Obama when he said he means no disrespect. He is an educated and professional man in politics. Calling a woman "sweetie" is not is good taste. It just goes to show his true colors come out under pressure.

Brenda   May 14th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

I have friends who call everybody 'honey' or 'darlin' and I have a habit of calling people 'pookie'. It's a human thing to do and shows that he is real. He has not yet learned to say the 'correct thing' but speaks what he feels at the moment. Kind of refreshing.

Julia in Eugene, Oregon   May 14th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

I'm very glad he apologized, but people need to lighten up. I use "dear" and "hon" all the time while speaking to people. It's not meant to be offensive in any way; it's simply part of my speech.

I'd rather have a president who isn't constantly guarding every single word he (or she) says than one who is constantly reading from the "How to be President" handbook.

Ryan from Indiana   May 14th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

He just doesn't know how to keep his foot out of his mouth. But then again, it's hard when you're pretending to be someone you're not. The man is so arrogant.

If Obama is the nominee then I'm voting for McCain in 08 so that I can vote for Hillary in 2012

Angela   May 14th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

I hope Obama calling the reporter "sweetie" does not get blown out of proportion. Where I am from we call men and women sweetie as it is part of our culture and few are offended.

Someone needs an apology for being called "sweetie"? What a shame. I know everyone has their own views but "sweetie" is an endearment and no one that I have ever known has used the word as anything but. I enjoy hearing it regardless of the situation. Sensitivity abounds in our society but shouldn't we be sensitive to more harming things than the word "sweetie"? I can't believe this even made it on national news.

Kiah   May 14th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

CNN will do anything to ignore this major endorsement. Clinton camp and their lies, and now this.

What's wrong with sweetie? I use that all the time with both men and women.

Janey   May 14th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

Not surprised with his arrogant demeanor–just treat the "little woman" with disrespect! I bet Michelle would have backhanded a man if he made a smart-aleck remark to her like that.

This is NOT a man who cheats on his wife like our past Presidents. It is obvious he has GREAT respect for females. Put this garbage to rest will you? I did hear him when he called the reporter "sweetie" however, it did not come across as offensive at the time, but I am glad he apologized & now he will not do it any more. I hope we do not keep seeing this over & over again & again. like every time he says a mis-spoken word you never hear the end of it. I am glad he got Edward's endorsement & the meeting and the announcement was over whelming to watch. Obama is all fired up & re-charged again, I love it.

You know it is funny, that every word that comes out of a politicians mouth is put under a microscope. I am from Cali and I find myself many times saying, okay hun, suga, honey to people I don't even know. It is not a disrespect thing, I just don't call people maa'm or sir. That is I think my southern background coming out at 40. Obama is probably the same way as me, no harm intended by the words, just what we are used to saying.

Okay hun',
I am just a city girl with a down home soul. Been waiting for something better than George Bush to come along.

Floridian   May 14th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

Hmm… that's unfortunate. I'm an Obama supporter, and I can see he was maybe trying to be nice, but that is kind of condescending to women. It sounds like that is a BAD HABIT that he needs to change immediately.

Don't disappoint me Barack - i expect better of you.

Unity Ticket 08   May 14th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

I call people sweetie. It's not derogetory. Get over it. What we need to focus on now is getting Hillary on the ticket and going after McSame.

Tobias   May 14th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

This guy is unelectable and unqualified to be president. If he thinks he can win over Clinton supporters by calling a woman sweetie he's got another thing coming. If he thinks Edwards makes a difference his head is on backwards. He doesn't have a chance.

Kimberlyn , ATL GA   May 14th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

America, this is really no big deal to me. John McCain calls every a "FRIEND" it drives me nuts, but that is his term of endearment, just like the word "SWEETIE" is for Barack. Please do not make an issue out of such a small thing like this. Let's stop here.

hsl   May 14th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

Behind the smoke and mirrors is more than America is ready for.

Yvonne   May 14th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

I wish Obama would call me sweetie

Clinton/McCain   May 14th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

What a jerk. He reminds me of Bush. Little do the Obama people realize that Edward's endorsement just after Hillary's magnificent defeat yesterday was disrespectful and his divded the party even further. McCain is looking better and better by the day.

Griff   May 14th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

So you got John Edward's? Well he's 20% of nothing in you. Is still Zero!!!!

BB Florida   May 14th, 2008 7:27 pm ET

Raghu   May 14th, 2008 7:27 pm ET

cnn,
WHO would be offended by sweetie?
I think its the Clinton News Network making a big deal out of nothing.

aurora   May 14th, 2008 7:27 pm ET

Seriously, this is just ridiculous. This gets a headline on cnn.com when people in Myanmar and China are dying by the thousands, living in horrible conditions, and facing the loss of their homes? Please. And the sweetie comment isn't even a big deal. Can we say, muckraking?

angela   May 14th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

so she was seriously offended that he called her sweetie?
that's kind of ridiculous.

Linda   May 14th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

I also call people honey and baby out of habit. Obama is a normal person just as we all have our own personal habits especially if you have children and/or grandchildren.

Students for Obama   May 14th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

I would be personally honored if Obama called me sweetie.

Will   May 14th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Wow. Talk about the press being oversensitive. Is this really an issue, Peggy Agar, given all the other things we have going on in this country?

I can't wait to see how horrible political correctness is in another 10 years.

gubby Rao   May 14th, 2008 7:30 pm ET

As a woman, I would be trilled if a man calls me Sweetie. Just because Obama is a Presidential Candidate does not take anything out of his genuine courtesy to us women.

Nothing to apologize for, Obama. A big hug from me and my friends.

ral-OH   May 14th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

It is a habit on mine too, and I am a woman. I often use the term
dear or sweetie when speaking to others.

I think this news reporter should realize this was not meant
as a slam, but perhaps more of a friendly remark.

Nia - AZ by way of MN   May 14th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Bradley J. Riley   May 14th, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Sweetie? Why should he apologize for that? Its a term of endearment. Will Presidents then have to apologize for pedophile behavior when they kiss babies? I understand thats a slippery slope comment, but lets be serious. He meant nothing by it.

How about some real news, guys!

Mary WA   May 14th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

I have made the same mistake ,too. It is common when you have kids and a spouse you refer to in this way. I don't think it was meant in a derogitory way. This said, He needs to be more careful and I bet he will.

Thomas   May 14th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

Wow its amazing how many men don't understand how bad using that term in for a female… Its just like calling him a boy… or son… If someone called my wife a sweetie I would ask him to say sorry, but I guess the OLD BOYS club of Obama does not understand this, I hope he meets the queen and calls her sweetie and she knocks him out.

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   May 14th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

Marlie:   May 14th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

After waiting months to see what John Edwards would do (really big news) you come up with a blog like this. Gutter news CNN. Gutter news.

Naomi   May 14th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

Cnn are you serious? When did sweetie turn into an awful or derogatory term?

Why would you post something so utterly ridiculous and childish like this. You should really be ashamed of yourselves CNN..

bigben   May 14th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

i Hear John Edwards calls Obama sweetie

lila   May 14th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

I think it's more like dear. As hold on "dear". It's is a term of endearment. It is not a belittement like "boy".
However, endearment is not 'professional' and in this time of ultra politically correct vigilance people will try to spin anything.

Please do not remove my post, mods.

Elisabeth   May 14th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

I cannot help it but when I look at the picture illustrating the story "Edwards to endorse Obama" Obama looks like as if he was watching a military parade Moscow during the Soviet era. A little dictator?

mw- obama supporter   May 14th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

SLDEM May 14th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

What's obvious is your ——!! He is not out of touch, you seem to have problems with something else. Admit it

EBC   May 14th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

Forget about it… this is ALL to do about nothing. Jesus let's move on.

My old neighbor STILL calls me "sweetie" till this day and she's in her 60s. Some older waitresses call me "sweetie", I take it as a form of endearment. Nothing more.

In the south, "sweetie" is a common term of "southern charm" endearment. Southeners are very warmhearted and very respectful and they just love everyone to death in the south. I love the Southern states, I alway love how they show GREAT hospitality.

I think we've LOST a lot of the "southern charm" up in the northern states. We tend to OVER ANALYZE every thing, that's the PROBLEM.

Teri   May 14th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

To many women that term is a put down, derrogatory and demeaning. Its like " get me my slippers sweetie" and coming from Obama its a chauvanistic comment.
But then again, he treats the Hill that way also, like go home and close the nomination off so I can win. Well it ain't flying and women do take offense to those comments, inspite of what the Obama spinners say.

Denial   May 14th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

Serious what the deal with calling someone a "sweetie" …. I'm LOST??????

CHERYL FOR HILLARY   May 14th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada   May 14th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

Lordy I wish Obama would call me sweetie :P

Dan, TX   May 14th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

Obama needs to think more before he speaks. He may call his wife or daughters that all the time, but it is very unprofessional to call a woman sweetie. He should have apologized instantly. I'm disappointed.

On the other hand, no one is perfect. I still am a strong supporter.

NORA, FLORIDA   May 14th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

CNN GET CRACKIN and put up some new posts that mean something. Like the Edwards endorsements!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Elisabeth   May 14th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

I cannot help it but when I look at the picture illustrating the story "Edwards to endorse Obama" Obama looks like as if he was watching a military parade in Moscow during the Soviet era. A little dictator?

Raven13   May 14th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

He's not a sexist, has women in high positions in his campaign, but that IS sexist language. He's right, it's a bad habit he needs to break. He'd never say, "Hold on Boy" to a man. He would have said, "Hold on, SIR". A woman deserves the same respect. But I'll bet it's a lesson learned.

think people   May 14th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

I understand the sense that it is potentially sexist, but it's also true that he lives with three women. He said that "it's a bad habit" of his, which is supported by the fact that he has used it in all different contexts. People need to chill out–and he did apologize, anyway. And SLDEM, that is the most ludicrous comparison ("boy" to "sweetie") I have ever heard. THere is an enormous historical and contextual difference between those examples. if you can't tell the difference, do us all a favor and don't vote. Sheesh.

JCL   May 14th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

Maybe she didn't like "sweetie" because she is "bitter".

kevin   May 14th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

So?…So?….does anyone really want to make a story out of this crap? I call my 80 yr. old patients sweetie because they are sweet. wow! politics at a new low level…get off this hardly newsworthy BS. ok?

Henri   May 14th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

So when did Terry McAuliffe take over as the person who runs the CNN blogs?

Roger   May 14th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

I made 9 comments on the posting about Hillary getting choked up. I was defening Hillary against all of Obama supporters that were bashing her for getting emotional over her daughter. None of the posts ever got through. In fact they are still being moderated now. This proves to me that CNN is biased. CNN is trying to control this whole election.

Heidi in Houston   May 14th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

It's a nice term of endearment and shows that he's personable. Maybe it's not the most professional thing to say, but it's nice to see that the candidates are human and not some iron man/lady. Oooops, and I meant to leave McCain and Hillary out of this post.

KE   May 14th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

He can't hide who he is for too long. More he opens his mouth more he loses. His supporters don't even try to hide.

The Obama supporters (not the people who voted for him) say one thing to one crowd and say another thing behind the door.

"small town people are bitter"
Yes we are now bitter and we cling to our real Hope, Hillary.
"typical white person"
Yes, we don't like what we hear about the black libration theology.
"losing bearings"
Yes, if the media keep pushing this man on us we will lose bearings.

We can't even list all the things his supporters are saying about the voters and the states and the candidate.

Get ready, it probably will see nastier attack on our first serious woman candidate.

Hillary or McCain everytime.

Mari   May 14th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

Sweetie is NOT offensive. It's just like the media to make a story out of nothing. He has a wife and two little girls so it is probably very easy for him to use that word.

GO OBAMA '08!

TO THOMAS   May 14th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

Thomas, I understand you are for Hillary and if she doesnt win…. you will show your true colors and vote republican… BUT CAN YOU AT LEAST LEARN TO SPELL McCain's name!

ELAINE   May 14th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

I am guilty of this also, I call males and females sweetie at times. So does my teenage daughter, my mom and grandmom. I mean it as a gesture that I sincerely care what they are saying or doing something but I am unable to be attentive at that moment, I thought it was a southern gesture but I guess it's not. Definitely no harm intended.

L. Smith in Atlanta   May 14th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

He can call me "Sweetie" anytime! I'm from the south, and this is just a habit in our vernacular. It's a colloquialism.

Nearly every day, I call other people sweetie, and I am called sweetie by others–it's no big deal here in Atlanta! It's folksy and friendly!

David   May 14th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

Barack is unpolished, unprofessional and Unexperienced. I pray to God that he is not nominated; he is too scary along with Michelle. . . . wake up America before its too late.

Andrea Correa   May 14th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

Obama can call me sweetie any day of the weak. In fact, I want him to call me sweetie so that he'll have to leave me a personal voice message and promise to "make it up to me." Mmmm mmm mmm. I love that man.

Jenny PhD   May 14th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

Give me a break CNN. What you SHOULD be covering (if you care about women's rights) is McCain's comment about fair pay!!! A woman asked him how he feels about equal pay for men and women and guess what …. McCain said women should get more education!!!! Now THERE'S a news story.

Steve   May 14th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

This should not be a big deal.

Maxine   May 14th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Please, I call everyone either hon or dear and I don't mean anything about it. It is just what it is a habit. He will try to correct it but it will come out cause that is who he is. My husband is from Missouri and everyone is hon to him. No disrespect just his way. But hey if you want to make an issue go for it, what else is new.

Penelope, Texas   May 14th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Well ducky, I think I'll vote for sweetie after all…..

Matt in Seattle   May 14th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

I would have liked to have heard Barack's speech following his endorcement by Edwards…..I am sick to death of hearing what Lou Dobbs has to say. I get the feeling that he thinks everyone in the world is stupid except him….enough already. Lets hear what the candidates have to say….I dont give a rip what the media thinks, especially Lou Dobbs, because guess what Lou…I can think for myself and make up my own mind, I dont need your angy little boy attitude in my face.

D'Anne   May 14th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Ben,

Your comment is priceless. Thanks for the laugh. We all need it.

junie/Canada   May 14th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

What a disappointment. You cut out Obama's speech completely right after John Edward finished his…..would you have done that to Hillary??I don't think so–I am feeling lately that CNN is definitely biased towards Hillary….perhaps I should look elsewhere for info on the presidential race.

Chris   May 14th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

You have got to be kidding me - find something more important to focus on. Like others have posted, I say "sweetie" all the time as does my dad and mom.

George   May 14th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Please give us some real news.

Linda   May 14th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

If this person is offended by the word sweetie, I guess I'm offended when McCain calls people "My Friend" because they may not be his friend. Please find something positive to report this is so beneath you.

LA   May 14th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

Gee, Barry, you were such a hit today in Michigan. Not.

Nyle   May 14th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

LOL.. Hearing Hillary supporters talk about disrespect for women is hilarious. You would have thought he cheated on his wife and then publicly lied about it while wagging a finger.

Must be a slow day at CNN..

HRC...the Bell Tolls for Thee...   May 14th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

My God…people will make an issue out of anything!!!

Obama/Bloomburg 08

Ann Marie   May 14th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

George Bush calls people darling all the time. Peggy Agar must be so bitter that the word sweetie offends her.

McCAIN=BUSH=DISASTER CONTINUES   May 14th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

After looking at all the "HILLARY FANS/DEMS THAT WILL VOTE FOR MCCAIN" I'm starting to believe it's just the Grand Oil Party up to their old "mischief" again. No Democrat with their bearings intact would even consider voting for a Republican Clone of Dumbya. If you wanna fool someone, at leaset say your a Hillary supporter that's gonna stay home Nov 2. As we all know, it's complete B.S..

Dave, CA   May 14th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Edward endorses OBAMA….now that's news. Yeah!!! Obama 2008!

KE   May 14th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

It's not so much what he says. It's his attitude.

His atitude toward women and the country and on and on.

GW   May 14th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

"Sweetie" Edwards is now positioning himself for the Veep. He was waiting to see who would be the candidate before he committed his super-delegate status…..he's such a whimp!

Tina   May 14th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

It is common in certain subcultures in the US to use terms of endearment like that, even with strangers. I have a habit of calling both men and women "sweetie", "honey", "ma'm" or "sir" (regardless of age). This doesn't need to be a news item!

DIANA, RANCHO MIRAGE CA   May 14th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Yeah my ex called a lot women sweetie.
Now he is my ex.

After having been in the government this long and he is still
condescending to women I see it with him all the time.

personally I don't trust him.

ObamaSupporter   May 14th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

what is offensive about that?! it is an affectionate word! i don't get it!! if anything this 'news' item only shows Obama's empathy and sensitivity and he seems so down to earth in the way he appologised too. makes me like him even more! You're a good man Obama - may you become the President :)

Venus The Super star   May 14th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Yuk!! I figured he'd talk to women like that!!!!

chris   May 14th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Arrogant,,,,elitist….more actions that speak to his character

db   May 14th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

If "sweetie" is wrong, what are people thinking when I call them "sweet cheeks" or refer to their backside as a "tender, delicious rump"? It's been a habit ever since my days as a middle school teacher. If offensive, I should probably stop.

David   May 14th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Barack is unpolished, unprofessional and Unexperienced. I pray to God that he is not nomiated; he is too scary along with Michelle. . . . wake up America before its too late.

Democratic no matter who wins   May 14th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Hey I am on the phone all day with people and women call me "hon", "sugar", "dear", & "darling." But I know what they mean when they say it. It's not always what is said but how it is said. I quite enjoy those it makes me feel all warm inside. However I'm not excusing a presidential candidate.

Andrew   May 14th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

I've always had a suspicion he was sexist. It's little everyday things like this that reveal one's true character.

Kjetil   May 14th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

I dont like that someone call me sweetie either ;-) But if Obama said so too me i would like it in some strange way hehe.

kevin   May 14th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

too many reporters not enough stories…are you really " CNN" Clinton News Network? Or what? Please dump this ridicule fast…your looking bad.

hoping for your end   May 14th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

a large sink hole like the one recently reported about should swallow cnn up until there's nothing left of your stupid hack jobs on obama. what, is it because he's black that your treat him with such contempt?

Trish   May 14th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

I am a woman, and I'm always calling people "sweetie" — my husband (who is my boss), my friends both male and female. I'm sure I've accidentally called a male employee sweetie — I even called my dad sweetie! It's just a habit for me when I'm trying to be nice to people and show them respect and affection.

I think it is an Illinois thing, because I lived there for 12 years and *everybody* calls *everybody* that. Male, female, whatever.

MEATPUPPET   May 14th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

I wonder if Mrs. Clinton has every been called "sweetie" by her husband?

Mina   May 14th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

I've heard him saying that on other occasions and I just knew one day he's gonna get in trouble for it. I am glad the reporter complained about. I myself have corrected people that addressed me this way. With all due respect, I'm a grown woman and ain't no sweetie to anyone I'm no friends with. Especially in professional context, addressing someone with 'sweetie', 'hon' and the like brings back the good old days when women were not taken seriously outside the kitchen. I know Obama, and many other people that use kind of talk, don't mean it that way but still, a bad habit that needs to go away.

Kim Poole   May 14th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

Marie from Ohio…you are probably one of the many who just feel as though you have to exert your power against a man. You're voting for Hilary because she is a WOMAN. She has been in the white house for over 30 years and hasn't ANY changes yet; her health care plan failed and NO he does NOT have to apologize for calling anybody sweetie. I'm sure that comment is far and few in between, and nobody can come close to his sweetie Michelle, his wife, so don't take it personally. Get over yourself.

P.S. If he ever met you, he probably wouldn't call you sweetie anyway. Sounds like you have issues.

Punisher   May 14th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

Obama can't answer ANY question from the media. He is a TELEPROMPT reader!

PatrickTM   May 14th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

Jeez — what are we coming to? I've been called sweetie, dear, honey and lots of similar things by waitresses, employees, bosses, subordinates, bartenders, and what not. Are we so sensitive these days that we take umbrage at every single word that anyone utters that could possibly have a negative inerpretation by someone? Clinton refers to "hard working whites" and everyone falls all over themselves — press, pundits, both campaigns — to point out she simply used some poorly chosen words, but Obama makes a perfectly innocent, causual common expression and we are debating it.

evy   May 14th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

any woman who has earned her position in a "man's world" career should be insulted by hearing another being called "sweetie" in a professional environment. he should know better than to make such a derogatory remark.

RJII   May 14th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

It's OK, my sweetie pie Obama. OOps!

Marion   May 14th, 2008 7:44 pm ET
