Watch James Rubin's interview Friday.

(CNN) — John McCain’s campaign said Friday that claims by former State Department official Jamie Rubin that the presumptive Republican nominee had advocated unconditional dialogue with Hamas were misleading.

Rubin, who supports Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid, wrote an op-ed in Friday’s Washington Post relating an interview he conducted with McCain on the British network Sky News shortly after Hamas won the Palestinian elections in January 2006.

"Do you think that American diplomats should be operating the way they have in the past, working with the Palestinian government if Hamas is now in charge?" Rubin asked.

McCain said the United States would not be able to avoid a dialogue with the Islamic militant group. "They're the government; sooner or later we are going to have to deal with them, one way or another,” he said. “And I understand why this administration and previous administrations had such antipathy towards Hamas because of their dedication to violence and the things that they not only espouse but practice …

“But it's a new reality in the Middle East. I think the lesson is people want security and a decent life and decent future, that they want democracy. Fatah was not giving them that."

The Arizona senator has criticized Barack Obama for both his willingness to speak with hostile nations like Iran, and repeatedly raised what he has described as Hamas’ approval of Obama’s candidacy.

On CNN’s American Morning, Rubin said McCain’s criticism of Obama’s position was “the ultimate flip-flop in American politics.”

“When he was in Davos amongst the European crowd and I interviewed him there two years ago, he was talking as if it was appropriate and natural and reasonable to negotiate with Hamas, the new government of the Palestinian territories,” said Rubin. “And then two years later, he's taking a very, very different position… smearing people for suggesting that one ought to talk to Hamas when it was he himself who was prepared to talk to Hamas two years ago.”

The McCain campaign said that his position had remained consistent: no dialogue with rogue or suspected terrorst nations or parties without pre-conditions. “There should be no confusion, John McCain has always believed that serious engagement would require mandatory conditions and Hamas must change itself fundamentally – renounce violence, abandon its goal of eradicating Israel and accept a two state solution,” said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds. He sent reporters a 2006 McCain statement in which he called on Hamas to renounce violence — though he did not say that requirement would be a pre-condition for dialogue.

“John McCain’s position is clear and has always been clear, the President of the United States should not unconditionally meet with leaders of Iran, Hamas or Hezbollah. Barack Obama has made his position equally clear, and has pledged to meet unconditionally with Iran’s leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the leaders of other rogue regimes, which shows incredibly dangerous and weak judgment.”

But in a January 2006 CNN interview, McCain had stressed conditions Hamas would need to meet before establishing a working relationship of any kind with the United States. “Hopefully that Hamas now that they are going to govern will be motivated to renounce this commitment to the extinction of the state of Israel. Then we can do business again. We can resume aid, we can resume the peace process,” he told CNN’s Betty Nguyen.

On a conference call Thursday, McCain said that Obama’s position was “unacceptable” and shows that he “does not have the knowledge, the experience, the background to make the kind of judgments that are necessary to preserve this nation's security."

After President Bush seemed to suggest Thursday that Obama’s foreign policy vision that included engagement was fatally flawed, the Illinois senator said again that his position had been mischaracterized. “George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists, and the President's extraordinary politicization of foreign policy and the politics of fear do nothing to secure the American people or our stalwart ally Israel,” he said in a statement.

He is planning to respond to attacks on his position at a speech Friday afternoon in South Dakota.

I agree with Clinton supporters that Obama isn't likely to win in November without their support. I just don't see the math working. But Clinton supporters must be retarded if they think Clinton can win in 2012 without Obama supporters. If, on the off chance, you think I will support Clinton in 2012 – after you have supported McCain in 2008 – you are definitely retarded.

I am a lifelong democrat and I remember another great orator, inspirational leader who was inexperienced in foreign affairs. Remember the Bay of Pigs and the nucular stand off with Russia. I do and the liberal will have you believe that Obama did not say HE would sit down with the enemy, Remember the debate Hillary killed him on this issue Now he wants to debate Bush and McCain when he will not debate Clinton.

You Obama supporter cannot see he will never be elected, he is a cry baby when asked the hard questions, gets the answer wrong and he made a mistake or is having to explain himself in a prepared speech with no questions asked. He can only talk, has no ideas, and he is dividing the party.

Dear McCain Apologists,

Have you watched the video of McCain's interview? What specifically was misleading or distorted? Simply put McCain '06 had a different view of dealing with Hamas than McCain '08. If the two McCains really agreed with each other, then one of them needs to do a much better job of explaining himself. As it stands, McCain is either a very poor communicator or McCain is a "flip-flopper". As I recall, in 2004 "flip-flopping" was the equivalent of a political "capital offense". What's different now?

mike   May 16th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

The republicans are so desperate with these feeble attacks. Bush has no credibility. He lost it a long time ago. McCain is showing his ineptitude more and more each day. He is a hypocrite and does not talk straight. He also has lied about what Obama has actually said about speking with enemies. Obama NEVER said he would NEGOTIATE, but he would speak. There is a big difference. Americans will not buy this trash from the republicans this year. They have finally realized all this negativity does nothing for them. It is unfortunate it took so long. McCain doesn't even realize that his agreement with Bush will cost him dearly. Why vote for someone who doesn't even understand that? Obama has shown he will respond quickly to all of these attacks. The more he responds, the better he comes off as a leader.

Obama, out of his mixed-up imagination, took offense from Pres Bush's remarks to the Israeli Knesset. Pres Bush was NOT speaking about Obama but out of Obama's guilt thing, his knowing he is an appeaser, he raved and ranted in disagreement with the President's condemnation of what happened just before WW II.

Obama is out of it! President Bush is not running for office this year.

Why do some of you accuse those who will not support Obama as being right-wing blog stooges trying to make Dems look divided?? Republicans don't have to do this – WE ARE DIVIDED AND TERIMINALLY I MIGHT ADD. Yes, we are real dems – many of us life-long dems, who will not vote for an unqualified pup just for what he represents. This is not some bitterness that will wash away as Nov. approaches. We are democrats, fighting for what we feel is best for our country, for our future. By either writing in Senator Clinton (hands-down the most qualified candidate we have seen in generations!!!), or voting McCain, we will see to it that Obama does not win the presidency. And mark my words, he will not make it to the presidency.

McCain and Bush are two of a kind.

Bush: "As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared, 'Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided,' " Bush said. "We have an obligation to call this what it is — the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history."

McCain thinks just like Bush. One idiot for 8 years is enough. 98% of the AMerican people are apathetic, lazy, ignorant and will follow the leader and to whatever they are told. Too pathetic to think for themselves. The government is suppose to work for us, not the other way around, that's why thse jokers are elected!

It amazes me how all of the Clinton supporters are blaming Obama, the DNC and everyone else for HRC losing the Democratic race instead of blaming HRC. It would be good to note that HRC lost the race herself..from her maniacal husband, her entitled attitude which made her not look past Super Tuesday, her horrible management of her compaign finances, her super-shady past and present, to her constant flip-flopping all the time.

Any idiot that decides to vote for McCain out of spite because HRC didn't win HAS TO BE NUTS! McCain is the second coming of Bush and it scares the bejesus out of me to think that people will vote for him just out of spite knowing darn well this man will not properly handle anything that needs to be addressed currently like the economy, astronomical gas and food prices and also Iraq.

White male for Obama   May 16th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Libya, North Korea, Sunni in Iraq were the peace George Bush and Maccain succeeded in bringing peace with.

These people are not win over with war, but with deplomacy.
Bush doesn't want to appeace torrorist ,but gave a lot of money to the Iraqi Sunni.
Bush lifted sansion on Libya, appease North Korea for its to give up it Nuclear weapons, Now Maccain and Bush are criticizing democrats for willing to meet leader we like and leader we don't like with preparations.

Maccain said America ought to negotiate with Hamas for peace. Now he criticized Obama because " Hamas likes Obama because of his policies?"
Washington politice are shameful, say one thing and criticize someone else.

Many times Maccain and Bush have criticized Obama;s policies, but they often turn around to implement Obama ideas. Like action to bomb any Militant activities in Pakistan if the Pakistani government doesn't take action. Bush and Maccain criticized Obama, but went ahead do just what they were criticising.

What will you call that? Hypocrits.

A Non-Voter observing the 08 Elections   May 16th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

A Non-Voter observing the 08 Elections

Conscience : "The inner sense of what is right or wrong in one's conduct or motives, impelling one toward right action "

John McCain has a good conscience, but he a very bad habit of never following his conscience.

McCain knew in his heart the the Bush Tax cuts where wrong, He voted against it in good conscience, But for political gains he changed his mind and didnt follow through with his conscience.

McCain knew in his heart that we need a comprehensive immigration plan, he sided with Bush to create one, Then he lost contact with his good conscience again, and changed his mind on a comprehensive immgration plan to appeal to conservatives and because it was unpopular.

McCain in good conscience also said previously that sooner or later we would have to talk to Hamas, Now he is bashing Obama and other democrats for saying the same.

Most importantly McCain knew in his heart that the current war in the middle east is a WAR FOR OIL, I believe he spoke from his good conscience recently when he said " we would never again put our troops in harms way for the sake of middle east oil" , But he voted for the war and championed the war.

McCain NEVER FOLLOWS HIS GOOD CONSCIENCE, HE MIGHT AS WELL NOT HAVE ONE.

Dave B.   May 16th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Debbie

Those of you who think McCain is a moderate are in for a big surprise. Maybe he was a moderate in 2000 but up until, I'd say 2 years ago he has flip flopped on ever major issue that gave him the persona as a moderate. He's currently a neo-conservative shill and he's walking lockstep with GWB.

So if you like Bush…You gonna love McCain.

I don't think there's a major issue that McCain hasn't flip flopped on. If you don't believe me…just google McCain flip flops.

If you thought Hillary was a moderate than you'd be surpised to know that her Healthcare plan is extremely liberal. Obama's healthcare plan is more moderate. Obama is for a trasparent government and more benefits for Veterans…these issues (for some odd reason) fall under the Liberal category.

Jo   May 16th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Another example of Clinton fighting for the democratic nominee and Obama making a speech. Obama may be the nominee but he absolutely needs Clinton on the ticket to handle the fighting of the election. All Obama ever does is say "it is politics as usual" and "i am presenting a change to a new brand of politics" Apparently he is the only one and if he wants to win in Nov. he needs a fighter and someone who is not afraid to face down negative attacks and to dish them out when necessary. He also needs her because 50% of the democrats in this country support her.

nerakami   May 16th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

What is the Mc-Flip-Flop camp denying? That the video we are seeing and hearing has been doctored… that they dubbed someone's else voice over his? Or maybe he didn't hear the question correctly and was responding to something else?

How far are these people going to go in thinking we are a bunch of morons? The Republican party needs a quick awakening to the realization that the American public is participating in a new approach to politics where the lies and deception are the old ways and no longer effective on our renewed minds.

We have eyes that now see and ears that now hear…. your forked tongue makes no sound to our new way of being…

America does not only belong to the white people of the world, it is a nation of immigrants and all colors or are you still living in the world of confederacy. I must respond to the people in your forum about Bush and Clinton, they're both white and the first is an idiot by all means possible and the second one is a liar and destroyer of the Democratic Party to achieve her goals. So (chris), if you feel that the U.S. only belongs to white people and if the liberals will burn it down then by all means, do it.

Mike   May 16th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

What politics has taught Senator McCain is the art of pandering to the electorate. When he stood for his convictions while running against George W. Bush 8 years ago, he was obliterated by the far right of the Republican party. The same occurs for candidates who pander to the far left of the Democratic party.

Maybe our problem with politics is ourselves. A healthy democracy requires collective intelligence from the voters. With the mainstream dumbing down of society to the least common denominator and our consumer culture of instant ego gratification, we will continue to get what we deserve from our elected officials. George W. did not elect himself into office, therefore maybe we need to blame ourselves also for the war in Iraq, the response to Hurricane Katrina, and the falling dollar.

American culture is in a death spiral. True patriots would care about this. True patriots would rely on their brains a little more and the emotional jingoism a little less.

Regarding Bella's comments- Senator Clinton CAN NOT BE TRUSTED – polling shows that, by a large percentage, most Americans believe this! Obama's connections to Rezko are tangential at best- Maybe he did make a mistake in 1997 of accepting Campaign Donations from him, but this hardly taints Obama as almost all politicians have had to go back and return unwanted Donations from questionable sources. The very weak and often repeated accusations against Obama INDICATES THAT OBAMA HAS ALMOST NO NEGATIVE BAGGAGE – Unlike Hillary and McCain.

Some things are just awful. Don't ever feel sorry for the Insurance Companies, or the Dr.s that get sued from time to time. Nice work CNN and the like who keep up with the true flip-flop tendencies of all the candidates–not just McCain, although his are the most glaring since he apparently underwent a frontal labotomy since 2000. Let's stay focused on the best opportunity this country has–ending the Iraq war strategically and using that $10 billion a month to improve our schools, health care system, financial sectors, and the end of our military capabilites being stretched to their limits. And whoever you are 'chris'–that "puppet boy" is about to be our next president and continues to prove he's the best pure politician this country's seen since JFK. I pray you are the true 'minority' in the Republican Party–but as an Independent I'm beginning to have my doubts about that.

To the O supporter challenge:

Quotes from Barak Obama's face….I watched the speeches!

"Clinton is divisive; Clinton is NOT to be trusted; 60% of Americans don't trust Clinton; She is willing to say or do anything to get elected; She represents "Old Style" politics; he mocked her, he laughed at her and he called the Clintons Racists." Now…I'm sorry that I have named more than ONE instance.

Clinton's ONLY remark was McCain was better prepared to be Commander in Chief. That is correct. It did not mean he would make a better president…it means with his EXPERIENCE he would be able to lead the Armed Forces Better. She has stated she feels she would make the BETTER President, and I agree.

Oh…she did call Rezko Obama's "Slum Lord" friend. He is. The better question would have been why Obama was accepting Campaign Donations from Rezko in 1997 when the City of Chicago was SUING to get the heat turned back on in Rezko's buildings. Winter 1997….11 of Rezko's buildings WERE in Obama's State Senate District, and HE DID NOTHING. 8 buildings were foreclosed. His official position at the time was the staff would check into the allegations.

Really does show his commitment to the poor….don't you think?

But CNN won't post this, even though everything is verifiable through the Chicago Sun Times……

bush and mccain are one and same. bush- too arrogant; mccain- too old. its so obvious how they both romance themselves and their words in public. Before it was all on home soil, now on foreign soil. I am ashamed of the GOP and the sort of "democratic lessons" they are teaching the world. please, they should NEVER tell any nation that they are not practising democracy. Afterall, they are not doing same either. "Practise what you preach" is not only sensible ,but moral. If the GOP remains in power after November, America should be ashamed of herself, and the Americans themselves should be abashed of their votes and their actions. The only action that will cleanse America's image before the world is a transfer of power to the Democrats.

louiec MO   May 16th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

For those who will vote for McCain if Hillary is not on the ticket. SO WHAT!!! The rest of the Democratic Party will unite and move towards winning the General Election. Democratics watch out for the TROLL REPUBLICANS responding as Democrats with hateful messages. It is time for the Democratic to play Operation Chaos on the Republicans.

I still don't see how this is relegated to fourth page news when Obama innocently calling a voter sweetie somehow garnered front page news.

Debbie.
I am over it. I'll just sit back and watch the reps do to the Obama family what they have done to the Clintons. My point was, some DEMS fell for the "Republican's" view of Hillary. Go read Mya Angelou's writings about Hillary. Go read her history. She has it right!

Tex   May 16th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

So typical of McBush! The ultimate flip flop artist of American politics. People used to respect McBush for his military heroism as a POW, however, maybe now his age and his "loss of his bearings" are warpin his memory, judgement and mind. Now, I also read that he has flip flipped on his original 100 year Iraqi war boast to a five year Iraqi war. Could it be that he misjudged the American public's view on George's lies that led us to war which McBush voted on. What a clown, McBush is becoming!

By set mandatory conditions and ask Hamas to change itself fundamentally – renounce violence, abandon its goal of eradicating Israel and accept a two state solution…etc. That means we start talking we start negotiating is that true. By setting a conditions….other side will respond to the condition you set. Sending and receiving is communication. Hello.

if obama looses it wont be because she doesn't represent the issues we as americans want to change so badly, it will be because these primaries have torn the democratic party in two and so much hatred and bitterness has set into a lot of the supporters on both sides. i did say that i would not vote for hillary, but if she was to get elected, i care more about the issues (war, healthcare, jobs, educations, global warming, economy etc) than my feelings for hillary. i would just pray she calm down a lil bit and stop treating everything as a cage wrestling match. even though she believes she doesn't even need the african american vote to win, i still care more about the issues that mccain. any supporter that would vote mccain out of bitterness doesn't deserve to vote. and trust me hillary would never become president because many many people would remember what happened and blame her. and i was a mike huckabee supporter at that and still am, but Obama is the best candidate to bring change and unify this country,,,,this i believe is a once in lifetime opportunity for us…i dont think we'll ever get this back for a very very long time.

To GOP RULES:

You have to be so disconnected to America's reality to say something like that. Wow, it amazes me how you desire recession and more unjustified wars for your own country? Dont you have some love for America?
The war lead to debt; yeah.. thank you all republicans now the country is probably going to lose its number 1 position in the world. America has to change; it needs to.
So please do some research on whats going on in here before you cheer for Mc War and Bush.

PS. No, the fight between Hillary and Obama is only making him stronger; he keeps winning you know. Oh, i forgot YOU DONT KNOW because you have no idea on what's going on in this country

"deal with them" can mean any number of things:

you can "deal with them" like Obama wants to appease the terrorists
you can "deal with them" like the US and the Soviet Union's war by proxy in the 50's-80's
or you can "deal with them" with a W-80 Dial-a-Yield Tactical Nuclear Bomb

jonathan   May 16th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

I would just like to comment about the republican responses of hate in this blog. You have tried to label democrats as dumb and you use hateful language for your indifference. That would be a hasty generalization and hate is the mark of ignorance. Yes, errors and bias will occur on both sides of ideological values, but you should pray for the wise discernment to hear and listen to points of argument before you make any of your decisions. Voting democratic or republican because you have some type of allegiance is simply foolish.

But as far as CNN reporting is concerned, I would take their fewer biases for the dems than FoxNews delusional bias and propaganda machine.

Honestly, I prefer NewsHour on PBS. That is truly no spin and embraces the argument from both dems and reps.

To obama and his cult followers. DO not blame Hillary for his losing, if he makes the nomanation. Hillary is a great woman but she has nothing to do of why I will not vote for obama. OBAMA is why I will not vote for him. no matter what Hillary, Edwards or anyone else says. obama is a coward, unamerican, and has done what he set out to do. (almost) divide and conquer. He will never conquer me. I do not like Bush but I think it is just like obama to say he was talking about him. poor boy. He was talking about the demacratic party. Mips   May 16th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

I think the "other way" McCain refers to Hamas is warfare. If you do not want to talk to people you have two options. 1) Continue the trade embargo against Palestine and refuse aid to Hamas driven government. This would result in further distancing between the people of Palestine and America. This will mean more terrorist attacks against Israel, more starving people in palestine, more animosity. 2) Declare war on the Hamas government in Palestine, invade the country and setup a new democracy. This will create a new haven for Al Queda, where they can train up a new generation of Jihadists.

Or you could pick the Obama route, open talks and provide the Hamas leadership with enough rope to hang themselves on. When public talks are held with countries like Palestine, the leaders in that country will have to reform their attitude or they risk alienating more people.

Think about it, either you talk with people or you fight with them. Would you rather force the people of Palestine and Israel into the crossfire of bullets or words? I choose words because I care about life.

McCain can flip-flop all he wants. If not his war-mongering talk, then his age will be enough to defeat him in November.

The Democrats have much work to do in the coming years to straighten out the mess the Bush administration has foisted upon the people of this country and the millions of dead and displaced people of Iraq. All for a war that had no reason to be. Where does the blame ultimately lie? I think the buck stops with Bush, Cheney, Rove —–

Question: "Who is best qualified to lead the American people back to the peace and prosperity of the Clinton years?" Another Clinton, of course. Experience counts, and Sen. Hillary Clinton has it!

The same thing is happening that happened back in the 04 election. The Republican have begun their fear tactics campaign. Telling everyone that the Dems will make America weak. Joe Biden put it as best as anyone can. We are weaker now than before Bush. our military is stressed and we are so far in the red that it is ridiculous. People talk about how we shouldn't care about how we look to the international community, but unfortunately we share this world with many powers. We need to work together and we need our allies. Bush has alienated many of our long standing allies. We need to get back to the table and work things out, and show the world what a great superpower America is.

If Obama is the nominee…he is going to be in a knife fight with the Republicans and who better to have on your side in a knife fight than HillRock! If he has learned anything in this campaign I hope it is that Hillary is his best choice for V.P. Please you Obama crazy people don't point to John Edwards…he is a wimp! No Guts No Glory John! Play it safe John…not good enough.

Obama got sucker punched twice yesterday…he never saw it coming. Check one (or two) off for the Republicans. While Obama is running around being blindsided by the Republicans he needs Hillary to work her magic with the voter constinuency that loves her. I have personally seen her do this and she is totally incredible at it. Any reservations her constinuency had about Obama she can turn it around.

If Hillary was the V.P. and she told me to vote for the Obama/Clinton ticket I couldn't say no to her. If she wasn't on the ticket and even if she told me to vote Obama I wouldn't do it. It is just the way it is!

Obama dose want to do just that . If they would renounce violence that would be the way to go . This is just one more example of Obama not being able to deal with a violent nation.

This is a clear example of a sitting U.S. president kissing the behind of Israel.
Why wouldn't he go to the knesset and trash America? Bush went there to bow to Israel to show that America is forever a puppy to Israel even at the cost of sacrificing the reputation of American citizens.

The politics is: who can bow more to Israel and be the greatest puppy? It's finely wrap up in "defence of Israel" God's chosen people" and all others are "rejected people." Wake up America.

Mel Gidson was right when he said that the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world. Just consider it – he's right.
Love the Jews, and love everybody equally. There'll be peace. Everybody is special.

Jane   May 16th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

So many people have been scrambling to spin Obama's naive debate gaffe early on when he said he'd talk directly to enemies. But the fact still remains, Obama had no idea what he was talking about, and he said nothing about preconditions or what he now refers to as "preparation" for such talks.
Our country will be left wounded by the Bush administration only to be led now by an unqualified amateur. But at least, it will be a democrat unqualified amateur;I guess that's something. Just pray that he doesn't refer to some world leader's wife as "sweetie."

DC Insider   May 16th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

How can Barack meet with a Ahmadinejad when the Iranian denies the Holocaust happened and has called for "Israel to be wiped off the map."?

Ahmadinejad craves US recognition. For Barack to agree to meet unconditionally face-to-face with Ahmadinejad for a photo-op and where the Iranian leader has to give up nothing…that IS appeasement.

dmw   May 16th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

I must say I love all of this and I look forward to how it plays out.

Hillary is the strongest, most qualified person still in the race because she understands all issues facing America. But, no, the Democratic left-wing liberals did not want her. Now the Democrats will be stuck with Obama as the nominee. The same old far left-wing liberals they have been running for years, just in different clothing, only to lose to the Republicans. It will happen again this year.

George Bush makes a statement, not even mentioning Obama's name, and here goes Obama as usual, I am so upset, how shameful, same old politics, and waiting a day or so, thereby he can get with his speech writers to figure out what to say, rehearse it, then get in front of the media and pretends he knows something….what a joke! After a year of this, we all know the game and it does not hold up to the light of day any longer.

The Democrats are the strangest group. The are the perfect example of insanity…do the same thing over and over again, then expecting a different result.

Have you closed your eyes and ears to the hold the terrorist have in other countries and what they have done in England,Spain ,Irland Are you so smug and sure of your self that you feel safe from anything happening here? Are you so involved with your self that you over look your countrys safety? Then what are our troops doing in Iraq and Afghanistan? This is not a party issue. This is an issue that will allow our children and grandchildren to grow up in a free America..

I lissoned to Presidents Bushs speech. He didn't give any names . what makes you think he wasn't talking about Carter or someone else? Whats Obama so worried about. Guilty thoughts and feelings on the subject of tarrest maybe. I reserached Africa. I went to Kenya then I put in Odinga. There were a lot of articles on this subject by various reporters and magizines. I think all of you have a P.C. so use it get some facts for your self. And quit your hate letters. Start loving your country. As J.F.K. said :Ask what you can do for your country, not what your country can do for you." A strong America will solve your personal problems. A weak America will fall.

We also remember your stance on taxes in 2000 as well, and your "no time-table on withdrawing troops" statement. You're trying to play both sides of the fence…a independent maverick who happens to be an ultra conservative and its falling apart before our very eyes.

Chris from NY   May 16th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Did McCain even know that there was a video on him on this issue out there before he started to attack Obama? Now that the video has surfaced he's trying to spin it to his advantage. But Americans are smart enough to draw their own conclusions on what was said. Isn't that what he said about Obama's interest in negotiating with our friends as well as our enemies? The evil that men do lives to follow after them.

That is the problem with McCain, he has flip flopped on many issues. He has flipped on the economy, foreign policy, military benefits and taxes all the while trying to discover what will sell with the American People. The problem with McCain is that he is out of touch, and although a Vietnam war hero; it is my opinion that his life experiences have played it toll on him. The reality is he just needs to retire and enjoy his twlight years, it's not like he needs the money.

McCain's a Flip-Flopper, Flip-Flopper, Flip-Flopper, Flip-Flopper, Flip-Flopper, Flip-Flopper.

Mrs. McCain realease your tax records. We all now know your were investing in the middle east. Now the question is when did you start investing. I'm going to take a guess and say a few months before the war.

YOU Obama supporters are raelly naive. So it was good to trash Senator Clinton and destroy her image as it was not enough now you want her to save your candidate and support him. It was ok to say that Clintons used the race card while OBAMA used it all the time.

it was racist that white people in WV voted for her 60% but if 90% of the black community vote for him it is not racist of course they are inited I am have to believe that.

You did not even consider her as the VP well I hope she takes the nomination all the way to the Convention and open the pandora box showing what the DNC and the Party leadership and the media has done. I am sure that we will see more evidences of who Obama really is a vulgar and average politician using the status-quo to say that he will go against the status qou flip-flop or wjhat?

TO OBAMA:

THIS IS REAL NEWS:

WSJ: Obama's Strategy for Low-Turnout Caucuses Helps Drive Delegate Edge
For evidence of the strategy that has made Barack Obama the likely Democratic presidential nominee, look at Nebraska, where the candidate narrowly won a little-noticed primary Tuesday. Sen. Obama's 49% to 46% victory barely got any attention from the campaigns or the press, because the state's delegates, who vote on the nomination, were chosen in a February caucus.

DIRTY WORK OBAMA .

SHAME ON YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bush struck a deal with Libya – a country that blew up american airliner over scotland killing americans. As we speak, He is paying and negotiating with the Iraqi insurgents to stop the war in Iraq.

Dialogue never hurts. The democrats are not advocating negotiations with terrorists. Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela are sovereign countries with recognized leaders. We may not agree with the views and actions of these leaders, but it is childish to put out the message: "I don't like you, so I'm not even going to talk to you."

Other administrations have used this policy of non-dialogue and look where it has led us. Do you know what the definition of insanity is? It is doing the same thing again and again and expecting different results. If no one has the guts to try a different approach, nothing will change.

FactCheck   May 16th, 2008 11:57 am ET

As a Republican I always found Mr. Rubin's press briefing informative. He is articulate and knowledgeable. His awareness of world events is no doubt enhanced by his relationship to Ms Amanpour(sp) who is the one person I know who provides objective reporting…facts and analysis. No spin!! It's good to see Mr. Rubin, step forward and call Mr. McCain out on his hypocrisy. There was a time when the argument was made for us not talking to dictators. Mr. Bush however, found it useful to speak to the Pakistani president in the post 9/11 world. So we are not puritans…we adjust our Foreign Policy to advance our needs. We all need peace in the Middle East. Right? Do we get there by aiming our Military arsenal at everyone who disagrees with us or do we engage them in serious diplomacy? If we continue on the path Mr. Bush, McCain and the GOP are espousing, America will be the nation isolated.

World Angel   May 16th, 2008 11:56 am ET

I don't think OBAMA should have taken President Bush's remark personal. I, personally, don't think that what he said was wrong. I would've agreed with him. He didn't specifically say OBAMA or Clinton, he said some Democrats. My response would've been, "President Bush you are exactly right, I don't believe any Party would ever take the position to try to compromise or appease with any TERRIROST leaders, because you already know that they are not listening, they only want to KILL period. So Mr. President I would like for you to be a little more specific as to WHO you are referring to woud do such a thing." I don't think it's necessary to defend statements unless they are directed to you, you can show guilt by your defense.

John McCain isn't a dreamer. He knows that a realistic approach to extricating US troops from Iraq and Afghanistan is going to take more than a wink and a nod to the terrorists. I trust him way over the democratic nominee or supposed nominee, Barack Obama.
With Sen Obama, his military and diplomatic proposals would be a disaster. He is involved in too many negative things. He even has phone banks over in Gaza campaigning for him. What's that all about. It used to be that American political elections were for Americans. Don't be hypocritical in condemning Sen. McCain for pointing out Hammas' endorsement of Barack Obama.

There will be much more to come in the near future to think about so don't make up your minds yet. There's a long road ahead and much more information to open the eyes of America before November's election.

Barack Obama has changed his stories so many times during the primary race, I can't believe he's accusing John McCain of Flip Flopping. Silly very silly retort.

Michael   May 16th, 2008 11:55 am ET

I'm an Obama supporter and have been critical at the Clinton campaign's conduct over the past couple months, but thanks for pointing this out. It seems to me that McCain is flip-flopping as an attempt to pander to the far right of the Republlcan party. Bush's speech from yesterday and McCain's Al-Qaeda, Iran gaffe shows that they both don't understand the difference between a terrorist and a dictator. Hamas, Hezbollah and the Taliban are terrorists. Syria, Iran and Cuba have dictators. Saddam Hussein was a cruel dictator, not a terrorist.

Watched the video on Huffington Post. Now the Dems need to focus on the flip by McCain on womens right to choose in 1999 to today. Then he was for it and now he pledges to appoint judges that will overturn it. I hope Hillary Clinton supporters become better informed on this because he is pledging to appoint judges like Roberts and Alito,(made the pledge during his primary run). Women say this is not an issue, I am a Republican woman, white, 58 y/o, that will vote for either Democrat for this very reason. I hope the Democrats start pointing this out. It would be rediculous for women to be angry at Obama and vote for the one that will do them more harm than any President has had the opportunity to do in the last 35 years.

Wonder why Bush made those comments he made yesterday? Check your gas price today for the answer.
McBush made those comments knowing it is going to stoke tension in the Middle East and as such drive the price of crude oil higher. Thus, Halliburton and his oil buddies would be able to make more profit from the high price of oil. The is the same why he sent us to war in Iraq…..
Tension in ME = Higher Crude oil Price = Record Profit for Oil Companies = Higher gas price for us her at home.
Bush is a complete disgrace.

Of course Bush-McCain flip-flops.
First, he said 100 years in Iraq, then yesterday he "crafted" it to 2013.

And you know what? 2013 = Mission Unaccomplished.

Never trust the Republicans. Just look at the country – gas prices, Iraq war, America's reputation, economy – just everything.

Bush-McCain = MISSION UNACCOMPLISHED.

Beware of republicans on this blogg acting like they are democrats saying they'll vote for McCain if Hillary is not the nominee. Again, we have republicans playing dirty tricks, instigating infighting among us Democrats. Democrat must stay together, who ever the nominee is.

Farewell   May 16th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Interesting that even now some supporters of Mrs Clinton do not realize she cant win. In my estimation its a direct result of being misinformed or not informed at all. Obama has won this fair and square and I dare anyone to show me or direct me to any speech he made where he belittled or insulted Hillary on any level. He has run a clean efficient and strong campaign . So much so that its the envy of some Republicans. Hillary's supporters take an objective look at the odds against Obama at the beginning of this process and its final outcome. Like him or not, he has achieved what most people didnt think possible.
If you can do that, ask yourself why?…..

Debbie,NJ   May 16th, 2008 11:46 am ET

I think its a great gesture. Its now time for the democrats to solidify their campaign for Nov. I have no problems with Hillary staying on till June as long as she does not resort to any negative tactics.

In my opinion, Obama shoulkd be free to choose his running mate, and it should not be Clinton. After this damaging primary, it would seem very superficial alliance

Once again, Obama makes a headline by "responding". This guy is unreal! What Bush said is shameful, and makes him look like a pandering fool…but that is nothing new. Why does Obama feel the need to respond directly. Bush never mentioned his name, he did say "some democrats". Suddenly Obama can't get enough primetime coverage so he is "responding" to something that Bush said? Now Hillary, on the other hand, responded like a leader. Made her statement and moved on. No need to call a press conference ( oops I mean a campaign event). Talk about pandering!

She claims to have "experience" – yet documents released show her doing the job of the first lady – not of the president?? She was under imaginary sniper fire….and then was not?? She is "tough" and "veracious" – yet when polls show her behind – she cries?? I confront both Hillary supporters I know with this….and they both answer in the exact same cult-like manner "we need a woman in the White House" – can you imagine if I stated that my support for Obama was based on his gender as well….I would be thought of as an idiot…and rightly so

Jeanne   May 16th, 2008 11:42 am ET

They don't call it the double-talk express for nothing. McCain needs to decide who he wants to represent and act accordingly. If he wants to appease the conservatives then be a conservative, if he wants moderates then be a moderate. Trying to appease both is making him look wishy-washy and a hypocrit.

Why so surprised. McCain is a Republican. They ALL LIE!

Momma for Obama   May 16th, 2008 11:39 am ET

Remember, she started all of this, she opened the door from day one insulting and lying about Obama, so now she is trying to be nice, since she has not a chance not only to the presidential nomination but she knows she totally ruined even her possible book sales..

the republicans know that if she attacked him, the way she did, they only have to follow and complete what she started..

that is why i said, if Obama can stand to the clintons and overcome them then he will be ok with anyone else………… remember, the biggest political machine is the clinton machine… they are awful..
even bush would not mess up with them, as they have dirt on everyone, and if they dont they will make it up.(digg it up)

jBiden in DE   May 16th, 2008 11:39 am ET

Interesting that the right HATES McCain and won't vote for him.

The left is split and one group prefers voting McCain than voting the other Dem..

Just incredible. An election with 3 unwanted candidates.

Doug R.   May 16th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Just like this Mr. Bush, McCain is a liar and a fraud. He's a flip flopping on issues all the time. One day he says this, the next day he tells you that. He's being hypocritical and dishonest. He needs to be challenged on the lies he has been spewing out. I remember him making these statement regarding Hamas and Iran, so who is he trying to fool. Don't insult me Mr. McCain.

Remi   May 16th, 2008 11:37 am ET

Kay ,Nm just be quiet, you have nothing to say. Don't hate, be fair play. Your candidate lost, come with us to beat McCain, or if you don't want , go over side. We will still win in November, and you will loose again….

shirley   May 16th, 2008 11:37 am ET

We all want to pull American out of the mess Bush and his cronies will be leaving, we all want peace, jobs and a better world for our children and grandchildren. We are more alike than we are different so please let's quit the name calling and dividing ourselves into liberal and conservative, that only plays into the hands of corrupt politicians. We won't all vote for the same candidate but we will all vote for the candidate we think will serve America best.

Debby   May 16th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Yes he said deal with them one way or another. McCain didn't say he would rush in and speak with them without preconditions like Obama said in his debate. Obama shot himself in the foot when he said that and now its public knowledge from a public debate. All the Republicans have to do is play that part of the debate over and over in an add and Obama doesn't have a leg to stand on with this issue. He can rant to Bush all he wants, but Bush didn't mention his name and it will make Obama look like guilty as charged.

Walter   May 16th, 2008 11:36 am ET

He flip-flopped on the Bush tax cuts.

It is just a pity that so many of the people can be fooled all the time. The bramble bush and McCain are counting on it. We have been told so many lies that it is full time that we go for real change instead of the same old spin and double talk. McCain is holding on to the bramble bush when it is
in his political interest, but tries to give the appearance of some distance between them when it is obvious that the master spinner is losing it too.

The Democrats will allow us to own our government again.

LaShanda   May 16th, 2008 11:32 am ET

Senator Obama has praised Bill Clinton's presidency. The race card was pulled when Bill likened Senator Obama to Jesse Jackson in South Carolina implying that all black candidates are the same. Research before you type! I'm sure all those black people in Iowa, Wisconsin, Maine, Indiana, and on Tuesday Oregon have pulled out the stops for Senator Obama. Oh wait…those states have a black population of less than 5%! Senator Obama's vision for his campaign is one that transcends race.

This story is huge! In a nutshell, he has done a complete 180 from his previous position.

McCain said Hamas is "a new reality"
Regardless of how his camp tries to spin the whole preconditions argument, I don't think anyone should let this one slip by.

Genevieve   May 16th, 2008 11:30 am ET

To have a dialogue with Hammas or any of the groups, "does not mean" you don't have previous talks by your advisers and preconditions. I believe it was during one of CNN's moderated debates, in which Sen. Obama stated he would speak to these entities without preconditions. I clearly recall Sen. Clinton clarifying her position and saying that a President does not go into talks without preconditions. The debate in which these statements were made came up when the question as to negotiation with Cuba, since Fidel Castro had stepped, and would the candidates be willing to begin talks with them. I also recall a contributing commentator on Lou Dobbs program stating the Cuban community might have problems supporting Sen. Obama since they didn't believe talks with Cuba should be initiated unless they addressed their human rights policy. Maybe everyone should ask CNN to replay that portion of the debate?

OH, my   May 16th, 2008 11:29 am ET

Ok, you BO supporters who are all of a sudden saying "Good Job Hillary" for her recent comments about Bush…. WHERE have you been the entire last year? She makes ONE statement now and all of a sudden you think what she's saying is NEW? OMG….SHE is the strongest democrat in this race and has been from the beginning. If you hadn't been so blinded by your candidate, you would have seen what she's made of a long time ago. She has NEVER given any indication that she is in this for herself. She has worked her enitire life for OTHER people! She has defended democrats over and over….unlike Mr. O's wife, Hillary has ALWAYS said she will support and campaign HARD for the dems nominee.
It's hard for me to believe that so many democrats have fallen for the image of Hillary that the REPUBLICANS have tried to put forward for years! Shame on you! You now defend Michele against the TN ads demeaning her, what do you think the republicans did to Hillary for YEARS????

John Starnes Tampa Florida   May 16th, 2008 11:27 am ET

These last 4 years, John McCain has come to epitomize and personify "flip flopping" as the GOP grooms a new talking head in hopes of keeping their multi-billion dollar gravy train steaming along. Tax cuts for the wealthy as America staggers under record breaking debt and a debilitated military due to a failed attempt at empire-building, blood money for the likes of Blackwater and Halliburton, record profits for oil companies…..McCain MUST flip flop to appease his handlers who got every thing they could have dreamed of when Bush got shoehorned into the White House despite losing both elections. "Democracy" is only for the super wealthy.

Roger   May 16th, 2008 11:27 am ET

CNN, and MSNBC (again) derelict in its duties. Barack Obama has run his campaign with numerous advisors who the campaign would have everyone believe are just not that plugged in to the campaign. Additionally, Obama refuses to divulge who these people are. Inevitably, however, word gets out that Obama has, yet again, surrounded himself with an undesirable.

This time the undesirable is Robert Malley. Coming on the heels of the Obama campaign saying it was “flattered” by terrorist group Hamas’s endorsement, the foreign press — in this case the London Times — pointed out Mr. Malley has close ties to Hamas.

Hilda   May 16th, 2008 11:27 am ET

The video of McCain flip flopping has been shown twice this morning. Atleast about this issue. There is not enough time to show how many times he has flip flopped. Now he promises the war in Iraq will be over in 4 years another lie, what does he care. Another 4 years of losing our young people over there, geez why do you think that is a good idea?

Obama is shining and getting all the attention at the cost of Hillary's message and sincerity towards americans. Once she is out, he and his idealogy (if he has one) will be exposed. Let media praise him, put him at the top, but the americans will decide the best person as president.

I really love Hillary is nominated that is not happening. The whole democratic party is working against her. Let me say one thing all Clinton Democrats will vote McCaine in fall.

Maybe in 8 years Hillary.

I just don't understand why the President and McCain are so against The Democrats speaking with Iranian Governments. It's probably because they've never accomplished anything but "War" which is not what the American People wanted in the first place. Maybe, our President didn't have a problem speaking and Had better Communication Skills with "ALL People" whether you like them or not, War could've been avoided. That's why Commucication is so important rather you agree with someone or not. Obviously, McCain's words are not worth anything if he' s flip floping. We don't need another Bush in Office. We didn't want him in the first place. How he won the election in the first place is unspeakable. I'm an OBAMA08 supporter, however if he isn't nominated…Clinton will be 2nd choice because I believe in the Democratic Party. The Democratic party is the answer. It's going to take awhile for Us to Clean up The Mess Bush and his Father has Created.

Bush needs to be impeached. After Bush's lack of international diplomacy while in Israel is under scrutiny now he brings Bin Laden's picture up as another fear tactic to back him up. We know Bin Laden is a threat but spreading propaganda as an excuse for Bush's stupidity is not good. Bush hasn't captured or killed Bin Laden in his 8 years so why use this as a ploy for ignorance.

dwho   May 16th, 2008 11:21 am ET

Congratulation McCain for flip-flopping. You know, in 2004 general election, President Bush accused John Kerry for flip-flapping. Now the ball is turned on the Republicans. McCain, are you still congratulating Hillary for your expected win over her?
President Bush's dancing for you victory has turned into groaning. His joy that his next successor will be a war runner is sliding away as Obama is close to the nomination for the Demoncrats.

Learn from your mistakes   May 16th, 2008 11:20 am ET

To all of the people who voted for George Bush and the Democratic deflectors why would we ever vote for another president who does not believe in diplomacy? People who believe that we can fix the economy, education or anything else while spending billions of dollars on this war are delusional.

Look at John McCain's health (don't) care plan. This man is not the maverick he once was. He is another 3rd term Bush. I know Clinton supporters are dissapointed but you need to vote with your head not with your heart. HRC is a loyal democrat. She will not run as an independent or encourage this ridiculous write-in notion. She will support the democratic nominee as should everyone who cares about our country!!

If anyone on the planet would know a flip-flop when she saw it, it is HIllary Clinton. She has said she wasn't standing by her man and then she was, has said she was for the waar In Iraq before she was against it, and has said Obama is not qualified to be Commander in Chief and now he is.

One more flip flop: last fall she told ABC News, "I'm going to be the nominee." I'm guessing odds are pretty high she'll flip flop on that, too.

Republican party misses the opportunity by nominating McCain. There are a lot of brilliant candidates in that party, but they went for the lowest road with the guy who speak from both sides of his mouth. Where is the real John McCain? Here's Reagan about negotiating with Iran (of course this only occurred after selling them weapons first):
"A major impediment to those goals has been an absence of dialog, a cutoff in communication between us. It's because of Iran's strategic importance and its influence in the Islamic world that we chose to probe for a better relationship between our countries."

"Our discussions continued into the spring of this year. Based upon the progress we felt we had made, we sought to raise the diplomatic level of contacts. A meeting was arranged in Tehran. I then asked my former national security adviser, Robert McFarlane, to undertake a secret mission and gave him explicit instructions. I asked him to go to Iran to open a dialog, making stark and clear our basic objectives and disagreements. The 4 days of talks were conducted in a civil fashion, and American personnel were not mistreated. Since then, the dialog has continued and step-by-step progress continues to be made. "

Ken   May 16th, 2008 11:17 am ET

Who are these people that have already rejected McCain back in 2000 when they chose Bush over McCain, but now want to support McCain? Bush is clearly the worst president in 2 lifetimes, and by their own standards and choices, they think McCain is worse — yet they want to support him and the McBush policies for another 4 years? This is delusional. These people are McMorons.

The people in Miss. have already seen through the [R] garbage — and the [R]s know if the people that far imbedded in dumbf**kistan can see through them, they are REALLY in trouble. At first I thought it was a very bad idea, but I think Obama should ask Hillary to be VP. (as long as big mouth Bill stays the hell out of the Whitehouse) Obamas supporters say that McCain is 4 more years of Bush, which exactly what the USA and the world do not need. If that is the case, and Hillary can bring her supporters on board, then you have to do whatever it takes to defeat the republi-goons. Remember, it is not what you want, but what the country needs.

Welcome back to reality and the Democratic party Hillary. This is the way it should be done. I have lost all respect for John McCain after he made his wife look completly foolish by saying his camp would not be running a negative campaign only to have it happen 3 times since her announcement. This time it was of course the yapper dog GW out there saying ridiculous things at an innappropriate time for personal gain and of course it was part of the 08 campaign. As if he was expecting it before it happened McCain had a canned response (a bad one of course) for the reporter when asked. I was just about to send this to cnn, I'm so glad they are on top of it:

In an op-ed published Friday in The Washington Post, former Clinton State Department official James Rubin said that McCain, responding to a question in a television interview two years ago about whether U.S. diplomats should be working with the Hamas government in Gaza, said:

"They're the government; sooner or later we are going to have to deal with them, one way or another, and I understand why this administration and previous administrations had such antipathy toward Hamas because of their dedication to violence and the things that they not only espouse but practice, so … But it's a new reality in the Middle East. I think the lesson is people want security and a decent life and decent future, that they want democracy. Fatah was not giving them that."

Hey, it is Bush, why would you be surprised. He does not choose words when he spits them. He is the biggest moron of 21st century. McCain is foolish to follow Bush’s idiotic comment and putting himself in tight spot. I think he is saying anything that will please republicans to win them. His flip flap is significantly denting in his reputation as a straight shooter.

She is really starting to change my view on her… It is a little late, but I have begun thinking this. If it takes one action to hate, why can't it take one action to love? The more she moves her criticism away from Obama and onto Bush/McCain, the more I will like her, and the more many should. Still don't believe she deserves the nomination since she is losing, but she should be involved in our politics in some way, shape, or form.

Naw, Bill already has had others to "occupy" his time

WIll   May 16th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Therin lies the difference.

To Hillary supporters unwilling to vote for Obama, take heed. This is what you are voting for. An attitude of war and division instead of an attitude toward peace and unity. We are a great power, but we need to use our strength for the good of the world and ourselves. A vote for McCain is unsafe for America AND unsafe for peace loving peoples all over the world.

HILLARY …………………. CHECK!
MCCAIN……………………….CHECK!
REV. WRIGHT………………….CHECK!

and now………….. BUSH ……………………. CHECK!

I say that is about right, that makes everyone he is fighting against, I think I will vote for him because he is being hit from every direction, and he still will not fall! shows alot about his character.

OMG! Hillary's helping Obama! I thought she was going to take McCain's side, like she has many times in the past.

I guess she saw the light. Maybe she and Barack will kiss and make up after all.

But won't Bill get jealous? :)
