Watch Huckabee's joke at the NRA Convention Friday. (starting at 0:50).

(CNN) – During a speech before the National Rifle Association convention Friday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky, former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee - who has endorsed presumptive GOP nominee John McCain - joked that an unexpected offstage noise was Democrat Barack Obama looking to avoid a gunman.

“That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he's getting ready to speak,” said the former Arkansas governor, to audience laughter. “Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.”

Obama supports extending the assault weapons ban, limits on gun sales, and a national law against carrying concealed weapons, with exceptions for retired police and military personnel. John McCain – whose legislative record was awarded a C+ rating by the NRA in 2004, but has received a perfect score – will address the group later Friday afternoon. His speech will include remarks "on the issue of unconditional negotiation with state sponsors of terror" that aides tell CNN’s Dana Bash are a direct response to Obama’s comments earlier Friday.

UPDATE, 8:28 PM: Huckabee released the following statement regarding his comments Friday, according to the New York Times website:
During my speech at the N.R.A., a loud noise backstage, that sounded like a chair falling, distracted the crowd and interrupted my speech. I made an off hand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama. I apologize that my comments were offensive. That was never my intention.

Even though I disagree with a lot of his views I always respected Huckabee – until now. This is NOT an appropriate subject for a joke, regardless of the audience. I hope he has the integrity to admit his mistake and apologize to Obama publicly. We're waiting Mike ....

Dem in FL   May 16th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

He didn't mean anything by it. For God's sake. Anyone would duck if a gun was pointed at them. AGain, the media blowing something out of proportion.

mike kaplan   May 16th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Not a surprise that Gomer Huckabee said something this stupid and offensive. Unfortunately, it is a very real possibility that the soon-to-be elected President Obama will at some point be targeted by some inbred gun-nut crazy bigot, which makes this "joke" not at all funny.

But what is funny is the hysterical, desperate (and usually illiterate) comments of some of you Obama-haters on this board. The fact that all of you are going to be so unhappy and frustrated for the next 8 years is one of the best things about the coming Obama administration, from my perspective. Get used to it, suckers!

Greg Pa   May 16th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Huckabee is a moron That is not funny !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a republican. If I said that i would be locked up. I am also a gun owner. This kind of talk should be looked down on by all parties.

It has nothing to do with rep vs dem what the hell is wrong with you. I bet most nra members feel the same as I do.

TPIP   May 16th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Typical Republicans. I can't wait until Obama takes them down, election day 08 will be a beautiful day for Democrats, and the country!

@americans   May 16th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Is this a man of God?

No wonder he can NEVER be the president of the United States!

Shame on Huckabee the sore loser!!!!!!

Paula   May 16th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

MIKE HUCKABEE JUST LOST ALL MY RESPECT FOR HIM !!!!

A FORMER MINISTER?? He should apologize -- the Republican Party is going down to the lowest level ever and are not "getting it" that people are tired of NEGATIVES in their lives.

The Austrian   May 16th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

I am a lawful, repsonsible gun owner, and I can not understand how this joke was supposed to be humorous. Most people would duck and cover when a gun is pointed at them (or, like me, they pull their concealed firearm out and neutralize the threat). Huckabee is a fool...

steve   May 16th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

I am a Republican – but that was not funny.... What's wrong with our people.

Sabrina   May 16th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

PURE DISGUSTING!!! I am a democrat and I really thought very highly of Huckabee.... not anymore!!!

hakeemsdad, Florida   May 16th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

This is so sad for American politics.
I don't think this is a joke! It can only be a stupid reaction of a stupid man who call himself a man of God.

Huckabee, I was happy for you when you won few states but now I see that I was blind. You don't deserve anything good. Why don't you promote gun use and killing in commercials since that's what you really like by joking and insulting people who are against guns, wars, killings and wants gun control.

It seems American people will continue to see these kind of Republicans for a long long time unless they teach them a lesson.

Don't forget, Bush declared Iran, Syria, North Korea, Venezualia, Cuba, etc to be the axis of evils and they are enemies, terrorists, etc.

By the way, People don't become your enemy without your effort! Your actions will be the major reason most of the time. It takes years build up a friedship or an ally, but you can make many enemies in few minutes.

It is upto us to decide our future and world's future now. Be wise!

Truthteller   May 16th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

I guess that's the kind of simple humor you develop when you have a bear-hunting wife. Inexcusable and incredibly out of taste. I expect to see an apology soon.

Amazed, Still   May 16th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

I don't know how this former Republican is consistently still stunned at the tonedeafness and reprehensibility of my former party; but I am. Scum, truly.

Connie Sturgeon   May 16th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Well I just lost the respect that I had for Huckabee. In light of all the shootings we have had in this country and him a reverend. When we have young men and women getting killed in a GOP war he should be ashame of his self. He not only owes B.Obama an apology, but the families of the dead and the American people. Shame on you Mike. This is what Obama has been saying these remarks are what divides this country. Mike you and Bush need to just SHUT UP!

Obama '08

bondibox   May 16th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Let's not forget that he was speaking to the NRA conventioners when he joked “Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.”

Not only was the joke tasteless, but it also conveys the message to this core constituency that he and others would find it funny if one of them were to playfully aim a gun at Senator Obama. In my opinion it's just a couple shades of grey away from inciting violence.

Judy, South Carolina   May 16th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

That wasn't a good joke but if you think so Huckabee that is good but beware the Senator may a reason to duck. Three against one.

Bob, Oregon   May 16th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

When I read this, I felt like I just got kicked in the stomach. Mike Huckabee made a joke about a deep fear for Senator Obama that runs just below the surface for many of us and is not talked about, for good reason. The joke sanctions the thought. No apology can undo the harm Mike Huckabee has done.

tongo   May 16th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Afterall, what does Huckabee knows about guns. It is not his kids getting shot. It is not his money being spent useless

Gabriel   May 16th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Huh. Isn't Huckabee the same guy that tried to milk the Chuck Norris internet meme for all it was worth? I think we're witnessing a persistent inability to be funny,

Brian   May 16th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

I liek Mike Huckabee, but this was simply contrary to his character. It wasn't the least bit comical.

Sean   May 16th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

I generally like Huckabee (as a person, not based on his political stances), but this was in poor taste. I'm sure he realizes that, and will hopefully acknowledge it.

LP   May 16th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

Huckabee, so if you were 'accused' of being a Christian, would you 'be 'convicted'?

It is a sad state of affairs when a so-called 'man of God' jokes about the atrocity of being shot. Have you looked at the number of people every day shot at school, work, at play, and in 'domestic' incidents. As a humanist, I fail to see the humor & I fail to understand how 'moral folk' support you in any way. You are the reason our young people are so conflicted; if adults do not set standards of ethics and morality as a way of life, not as a matter of convenience, then we cannot expect anymore of young people.

Hans-Erik Iken   May 16th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

I guess tht a gunman is the only way they can think of to stop Obama.

A sad day when politician thinks this is a joke. Both Kennedies were not enough I suppose. I wonder if he found the attempt on Reagan just as hilarious.

MC- Atlanta,GA   May 16th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

Huckabbe is a narrow minded – ancient in his thinking – bigot that clearly had no chance in hell of getting the Republican nomination. Maybe if he ran back in 1860's he would have, but even the Republican party today is progressing with modern times. You either become more progressive in your thinking or you get left behind- ask any minority.

Thank god it's not Huckabee 2008 !

Shawn, Takoma Park, MD   May 16th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

Scott   May 16th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Clinton supporters make me SICK.

It isn't about what is best for this country, it isn't about giving us a brighter future, it is about getting YOUR candidate elected, and if she loses the nomination then vote for the other guy out of spite.

You liked Clinton for what? The issues? If that is the case then there is no way you would vote for McCain or want him in the White House.

This isn't some kind of GAME, this is the future of our country and if you are going to back the candidate who is the opposite of Clinton over the guy who is almost the same, out of spite, then you make me sick.

You shouldn't be allowed to vote.

McCain is a flip-flopper who is doing everything he can, even if it means abandoning his own opinions in favor of his party, to win their votes.

Flip flops include:

Bush Tax cuts
Waterboarding
gun control
diplomacy with foreign nations.

There is video proof showing his stance has changed since he ran for President this year.

No backbone, no will of his own. He is a puppet of the party.

No business running anything.

SHAWN   May 16th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Independent for Obama   May 16th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

That was a completely disgusting and not even remotely funny comment. If someone pointed a gun at me I would hit the floor too – even the times I've been sport shooting the number one rule is NEVER aim the gun at another person. The idea of someone being forced to dodge a bullet isn't even remotely comical – it is disturbing and unfortunate.

Would it be funny if you were joking about someone pointing a gun at current President Bush, Huckabee? No, it wouldn't be funny, and it would probably get you roughed up by the FBI and your phones would be wiretapped.

Simply DISGUSTING behavior.

Jean   May 16th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Huckabee's comment is shocking!!

Too many other important issues to worry about. Whiskey, could not have said what you did better. I would like to thank you for all who will not see it.

ASam   May 16th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

I am at a loss of words to describe your comment. It does not make any kind of sense at all – and you're supposed to be a governor? Heck, you even recently asked for votes to become the president? I think that you should start by, at least, pretending to be an intelligent and civil human.

Dori in AZ   May 16th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

Can't imagine that Mr. Huckabee intended any harm, but this is really an ignorant & insensitive remark. Just not funny.

Huckabee owes Sen. Obama an IMMEDIATE apology. While he's at it, he can apologize to everyone who has lost a loved one to violence, starting with a tremendous group called Parents of Murdered Children....

Where are we in this country?

A preacher, even jokingly, putting the image out there of someone trying to shoot Senator Obama?

Where are we and where are we headed?

I have become increasingly concerned about the violent tone of the commentors to all the news outlets and have begun thinking that the likes of Chris Matthews, Anne Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, et al, have validated virulent speech, but a former candidate and pastor.

Don't we all need to take a step back and think about what is happening to us?

John in Los Angeles, CA   May 16th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

The amount of death fhreats that Obama gets compared to the other candidates is probably quadruple of the others combined. It's like when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's record, he said "it was one of the worst experiences of my life..." citing specifically being a black man doing something that whites have held with such esteem.

For a Christian minister and political figure to joke about the life and safety of a fellow American, even though Huckabee claims not to be racist, shows that eventually people show for who they really are.

I completely don't get the joke. So I don't even know if I should be offended on behalf of anybody.

However, I'd also like to say gun control is a non issue. Most murderers don't have legal guns anyway. So it's not like making guns ....more illegal? .... is going to stop any crimes. Gun control is just one of those republican things they create to get rednecks riled up and voting for them. And it's one of those issues dems take a stand on just to have an opinion.

I'll care about gun control when the vast majority of murderers are buying their guns at stores instead of on the streets.

You know, the deal is that Barack has the potential to be a leader that everyone can take pride in, not just Democrats. John McCain looked into the future in one of his most recent speeches and perhaps that is not a bad idea. After the race is over and Barack is president it might become apparent that this country, all of us, really begin to like and admire this man whose only real sin is to love this country enough to run for its highest office. If you look back on those presidents that everyone loved and were proud of....those men who went down in history and who we all celebrate regardless of their political affiliations, many of them were taken from us by a gun. I think that when you look into the future and see how meaningful this man will be to our well being and our unity as a country you will find this remark to be distasteful and inappropriate and probably the very worst thing I have read here in the last 6 months. I thought Mike Huckabee was at the very least a good descent human being....even if I dont like his politics....but Mike you arent even that.

Rob   May 16th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Tacky juvenile comments like this are exactly why you lost Huckabee. Claim to be a minister and you joke about Obama getting shot in a country that routinely castigates, kills and imprisons black men for speaking up

That was hilarious. For some reason, I actually could picture the wimpy Obama doing that.

Make no mistake about it. This is exactly how the Repubs will picture Obama. A wimp, whinning, media protected left wing liberal. Would you really trust him on Foreign Policy, security, economy.....

Unbelievable. I had decided that this primary campaign season had already shown us the worst sides of most everyone, but I stand corrected. This is the most irresponsible and potentially dangerous kind of gratuitous commentary - this is not funny, and one hopes that the audience for these asinine comments was made as uncomfortable hearing them as Huckabee SHOULD have been making them.

Diziz31   May 16th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Why is this man in the news? Have we nothing to report on but jokes from a sore loser? Funny you say, just remember those students in VA, CA, CO, and when those kids pulled a prank with the fire alarms and took shots with real guns at the elementary school. Are you laughing now.

we ARE bitter!!!!!   May 16th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Ummm, okay. How is that funny?????

Stacey   May 16th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Another outrageous comment said by another outrageous republican. Get a thick skin Dems because the Republicans are desparate and will say anything. Remember, the Republicans love using fear politics. This is what they do and worse.

Common Sense   May 16th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

This guy is a joke and an idiot and thats why he couldn't even beat McCain.

No Huckabee! You're a loser and can't even match the intelligence of Obama's pinky finger.

DEMS IN 2008   May 16th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Since when did CNN start reporting news like TMZ? Flagpins? Sweetie? He said, She said?? How about reporting on real issues and not on anything and everything that tries to keep the audience from turning the channel? What is this Springer? Can anyone tell me where I can go to get an unbiased approach to real news concerning the candidates on the issues? I challenge CNN to look at the Blogs they have posted in the last few days, and let me know if there is even one post that has anything to do with the real issues Americans face, and what the candidates plan on doing about it!!

Rural Pennsylvanian   May 16th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Is there a candidate (even among those that dropped out) that has one ounce of common sense, I don't think so. This country is in a lot of trouble.

Ito   May 16th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Romney and Huchabee are in a bloody behind-the-scene duel for the V.P. spot.

Jerry   May 16th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Hillary to straighten Mike out.

Denise Oliver-Velez   May 16th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

I am appalled by this "joke". Not funny. Not Christian. And very disturbing.

jan   May 16th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Huckabees comment was in very poor taste...I think we all have nightmares of guns being pointed at us with the college shootings, post office shootings, place of employment shootings. All families that have guns in their homes don't even joke about pointing a gun at someone!!!

MC, Pa   May 16th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

idiot

Jeanne   May 16th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

I like Mike Huckabee but not his politics. I also think the joke was in poor taste but considering the audience, it's not a surprise. I support gun control and I also think there should be stricter laws on who is able to buy a weapon. If we are going to advance to a more civilized society, we have to be willing to give up the weapons and this type of mentality. We're not cavemen anymore.

Chief lagosboy, NJ   May 16th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

I don’t get the joke……it must be one of those Hillbilly jokes. This guy is an idiot!

Our President Obama 08’ & 12’

Mike   May 16th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

My god people – is every Blog an "Obama" blog? I'm getting a little sick of you Jonestown people – drink your Koolaid already. If you didn't think there was going to be mud slinging when down to the final 2 then you don't know anything about politics and you don't belong voting. Obama is gonna dissapoint all of you who are "jonesin" over him; he's already started with the rhetoric and the "trashing". If he really wanted to run a different kind of campaign he wouldn't react to anything Mccain says – he'd be a bigger man but noooo. he's just another politician – just like the good Reverand said.

sandra from TN   May 16th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

i think he needs to say sorry... i guess it was a joke.. but if you curve it a little it could say a whole lot more....

remember that guy who said that they needed to go on a lynching party and go after Michalle Obama?.. that was tasteless and so is this.. how igorant.
i used to have respect for Mike.. i actually liked him. no longer.

Susan Zandofsky   May 16th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

First of all, this is not a joke. Most definitely, not funny and something that shouldn't be "joked" about or laughed "at". It's amazing how low politicians go. Both sides are guilty of it, but the Republicans have been stooping to all new lows in this campaign season. This is nothing more than "hate talk". I only hope these type of statements won't inspire some gullible, uneducated, idiot to act. It makes me sad as an American to see and hear our "leaders" saying and doing things unbecoming a Presidential candidate(s). Unfortunately, there are far too many people that subscribe to this type of thinking. They don't use common sense when dealing with the issues and continue to support people like Bush, McCain (one in the same), Huckabee, etc. It's time to wake people. If you agree with this sort "hate speak" you should evaluate YOUR weaknesses that shape YOUR thinking & beliefs.

jej   May 16th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

buckeye in GA   May 16th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

You continue to disappoint, Republicans.

shannonL   May 16th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

a good reason why Huck has no business being anywhere around the White House. I'm not sure what sort of connections you have to have going on in your brain to make a comment like that and think it might be funny.

Is he saying the Obama think that the NRA is full of poor white people that hold on to their guns and religion? Ok, i might get that...but the next step...someone pointed a gun at him?? not sure where that comes in...

KLM   May 16th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

OMG.. this is not funny at all. You should never joke about a gun being pointed at anyone....I wouldn't even joke about Bush like that and I really don't like him. Many people have lost loved ones because of guns. I never expected something like this to come out of your mouth.

Hillary/McCain   May 16th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

Michael Templer   May 16th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Don't pick on Huckabee's she is a nice lady

and if Obama was all white this would be a funny

When you have a black man, a woman running for the first time

our sensitivity radar is turned all the way up

if there had been a couple of woman and blacks as president

this is political humor and i will Huckabee the benefit of the doubt he

gave Wright initially.

Richard   May 16th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Huckabee's comment was in extremely poor taste and not the least bit funny.

Eric   May 16th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Not funny... in fact this is quite a disgusting remark. I am an Obama supporter, but I would still find this remark distateful if it were made about Hillary, McCain, or anyone, for that matter. Shame on you, Mike Huckabee.

Voice of Reason   May 16th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

WOW- what a stupid comment!!!!! Considering that Obama has Secret Service protection because people have made death threats against him puts this "joke" on the below distasteful list.

Chad   May 16th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

That is wildly inappropriate. Shame on Huckabee

Kelley   May 16th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

As a responsible gun owner, hunter, and member of the NRA I am deeply upset that even the notion of someone aiming a gun at another person could somehow be found as funny. So much for the NRA's program of responsible gun ownership and gun safety. I am truly upset that I am a membr of this organization

Posn   May 16th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Wow!!!!!!!! who needs him in the White House? Great thing he was stop before he became a nominee. That has to be the stupidest comment I have heard by a baptist minster. I never saw that on the national news. If Rev. Wright would have said that it would have been a media frenzy. What gives?

JuliaC   May 16th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Alonzo Demetrius, you obviously know as much as Kevin James. Please look up the meaning of "appeaser" and while you're at it, read up on Neville Chamberlain so the next time you post something you don't show how little you know.

Scott ATL   May 16th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Kind of makes you understand, maybe just a weeeeeeeeeee bit where Rev. Wright was coming from, huh?

Debbie   May 16th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

That wasn't funny joking about anyone being shot at. The media made such a big to-do about Rev. Wright but to me joking about someone being shot at is horrible. Shame on you Mike Huckabee. I am not a Clinton supporter but if he made the comment towards her, I would equally appalled.

Bubba   May 16th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Yes, I AM psychic. And I think someone's going to poison Huck's creme brulee.

Uncalled for. And how, exactly, is that supposed to be funny? Wouldn't ANYONE duck if a gun was pointed at them?

tigerakabj   May 16th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Ok, Huckabee. Your social and political policies notwithstanding, I thought you had some sense and were a decent man. But when you say something like this, I get mad.

You'd better apologize and do it soon before you have to duck yourself. Of all people, you chose Obama to make the joke about. One good thing about this race is everybody's true colors are coming out. You of all people should know God doesn't like ugly. Take your behind back to Arkansas.

Republican in Idaho   May 16th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

What is with Huckabee? I used to respect and admire him, but after reading this I am not so sure? Why would you joke about something like this? What is happening to the republican party, our leaders are making a–es of themselves.

Carolyn   May 16th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Can you imagine the courage it takes for an African American to run for President? "Jokes" like this are totally sick. I am appalled! Huckabee needs to get down on his knees and ask for forgiveness.

Stephen   May 16th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

I normally find Huckabee pretty funny, unfortunately this one falls flat.

Tara   May 16th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

I am not sure what disturbs me more: that Huckabee told an unbelievably tasteless joke or that the audience laughed. Scary, scary.

Jim   May 16th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

This could be Huckabee's plan to send someone shooting Obama.

Black Female, Texas   May 16th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

The Dude   May 16th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

This is old material. When he was a pastor he used to tell this joke all the time... "The noise you just heard was Jesus taking cover, because someone pointed a nail gun at him!"

Joe Strummer   May 16th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

This joke fails on so many levels, but let's look at the most innocent: It presumes Obama, as a Democrat, is somehow anti-gun. I know the GOP hates to give up this wedge issue, but, hey–the GOP/NRA has already won this one. When Obama and Clinton are debating over who's more pro-gun, you know the point is moot. More lying, propagandistic BS from the GOP. And, oh yeah, racism to boot! What a buncha schmucks!

Jon   May 16th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

Just goes to show that people are really thinking the guy is going to get shot. If that is the first thing you think of to say, it's up at the forefront of your thoughts.

nitro   May 16th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

And this guy is a minister.

Debby   May 16th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Well Obama should do a better job of his gun ban in the city of Chicago because the crime rate there is awful. Well maybe Huckabee's comment isn't so far off as Obama hasn't been to Iraq yet. He is ducking that fire to it seems.

Sharon Minnesota   May 16th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Huckabee, that was an uncalled for remark. I'm supporting John McCain but those kind of foolish statements do not help him.

What in the world???

If this report is accurate and McCain was thinking about choosing Huckabee for his VP running mate, I would strongly suggest that he reconsiders.

In the same interview he said he believed them to be a state sponser of terror, but applauded Powell for going to Syria.

Fojohnson   May 16th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

What a shame that Huckabee should make joke about Gun in this country when people get killed by someone with no purpose. That is not pondering to NRA but just a silly remark. I wish he would not have said a word like that because it is not a joke. He will stir a lot of eyebrow and even give some lunatic some idea.

Mike Huckabee, a reverend makes jokes about a man being shot? wow! I used to have a graphic I made of Obama/Huckabee 08, mainly because I respected Huckabee. Well, as I am the first to admit how wrong I was about the Clintons, I know have to say I was totally wrong about Huckabee, he's a typical politician, following the lead of the GOP machine, saying anything to keep the attention on them – you lost my respect today – and I think you owe Obama an apology! What would Jessus say????

Do you know what I like about today??? I love the fact that he is challenging Senator McCain. I'm not gonna lie guys but to me, he has to show confidence, pride, respect and honor towards what he believes in. I just liked the idea that he was calm and relaxed. I'm not gonna lie guys, THAT'S WHAT HE NEEDS TO DO! He needs to show that he can stand up, take a punch, not be afraid and in fact, call people out because in essence, the Dems are going to have give out punches, there's no question the Dems are going to have be tough with GOP. Let's get this straight, this election couldn't have been written better......

He needs to do that and call people out. I just loved what he did, I really did. In my opinion, this is as probably as close I ever heard him say he wants to either challenge McCain or even that bastard of a President! I just love how he handled himself and how he showed confidence. Remember when some people have said that my boy should be a little tough??? Well, based on what I just saw, he had some toughness in him today. And I'm sure some people won't believe and said...."No way!!! He ain't so tough".

That's how I want it to be.....

THAT'S WHAT HE NEEDS TO DO!

But to think that people will support Hillary in 2012 after many of you plan on turning your back on the Democratic party because your candidate lost, YES LOST, are greatly mistaken.

Huckabee actually defended Obama in regards to Rev. Wright. Having been a pastor himself, Huckabee said that just because someone attends a church doesn't mean they agree with the pastor on everything they say.

Thank you, Gov. Huckabee for bring some common sense to this race.

Kenneth M   May 16th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Funny how Mitt and Huck are both in a quest for RELEVANCE. The republicans are going to take a thorough and an interrupted beating this season; its as if they know it and are panicked to find a solution Here is a clue, rally around the things you have accomplished, promise what you know the electorate wants, demonstrate how you will deliver, and leave the rest to the human nature of the electorate. This beating does not have to be so one-sided, but it will be because you don’t know how to respect you opposition, so you wont be able to understand our appeal to your voters. Bye Bye Republicans.

Davind King   May 16th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Someone should point a gun at Huckabee and see what he does! Why is he even still here? Huckabee is SOOOO irrelevant. Why don't them Republicans go overand live in the Middle East. I am so frustrated with the reporting on this election. Your audience are adults. We are concerned with fair housing, health care, the economy, and education and the majority of us thinks its cruel to suggest that someone would be pointing a gun at presumtive United States of America Demorcratic nominee. It's awful to finally see the republicans for who they are; it is shameful that the prospect of Barack being shot is somehow funny to anyone. This is terrible, terrible, terrible, there is so much wrong on so many levels with this...

What is Mike Huckabee trying to infer by such comments–that some sick minded person should or will aim a weapon at Senator Obama? Or that Mr Obama's potential Presidency may result in someone taking aim at him? These types of comments can encourage and promote some sick minded person to act. Huckabee should be ashame of himself and held accountable for his words. Once looked at as a Christian running for President; is this Huckabee's true colors and feelings toward an African American who may be his next President? I'd like to see him wiggle his way out of this one.

Philip   May 16th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

This coming from an ordained minister? Guns are no laughing matter. REPs say life is sacred; I guess only some lives are sacred.

The Republican Party; they are the ones that make thinking people laugh. What a joke.

White Male -CA   May 16th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

That was a veiled threat.

no bon bons   May 16th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

Obama is an IDIOT!!! No wonder he has to PAY hundreds of people to blog for him.....

Ken from Michigan   May 16th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

That's a disgusting remark.

Thank the NRA for all the senseless murders of our youth and children.

Huckabee is a JOKE!!

Doug R.   May 16th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

Most people in the country could care less about Mike Huckabee or what he has to say. He's a loser.

BIFF, BIFFINGTON...   May 16th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

huck....

very poor taste....

very poor.

Shane   May 16th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

I AM A DEMOCRAT AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS REALLY FUNNY

Chris Banner   May 16th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

That is inappropriate for Hukabee to say
A loser comes up with that type of "un-funny" joke and it is posted on CNN.... Don't you guys have better news to post up

Sweetie   May 16th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Some things are just tooooooooo easy!

Obama is definetly a Whimp without a clue!

McCain 08

Fed Up   May 16th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

What an appalling statement by Mr. Huckabee. He should be ashamed of himself and owes Senator Obama an apology. The Republicans are sinking to new lows in their desperation.

Dave   May 16th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

I'm no Obama mark but Huckster, you're not funny, man!! go back to AR Gomer.

JT   May 16th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Wow. What a scary comment.

John Smith   May 16th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Thank God!

S. Rice   May 16th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

What is wrong with this man? Really, that is funny?

Allan   May 16th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Up until this very moment, I thought that Huckabee, though horribly mistaken on most social issues, was a decent man and a good Christian.

Not any more.

I hope Huckabee experiences the gun-related death of someone he loves real soon like I have, that will be karma.

Proud1of 26% in WV   May 16th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

As a life long NRA member, hunter, gun owner, and republican these kind of statements are why I voted democratic for the first time in 30+ years. In WV guns are here to stay.I'm worried about $4>00 per gallon gas prices. If I could ask Hitler 1 question it would be what the hell does this have to do with anything.

Kim   May 16th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Pastor as you call your self. That was nice of you to talk like this. Claiming to be a Child of God. Think about what you say, don't try to impress other Folks.

Chris from NY   May 16th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

This is a not a laughing matter. People are dying from gun violence. While we support the second ammendment, we do advocate for discipline in selling and handling guns. How can Mike Hucabee joke about such a serious issue? Do Republicans ever take anything serious? More so, why did Mike Hucabee have to use Obama for such a joke? That's appauling. I take offense at it.

Yeswecan   May 16th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Mr Huckabee
Get your house in order. These silly comments are not going to get GOP anywhere. You guys have messed with America long enough to get us here. We will make sure there is no republican in White House in 09.

old white moman   May 16th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

I supported Clinton but I understand .... she has lost .
I`ll give my voice to Barack Obama!

Democrats unite!

Anybody..... with me.....?????????????? Hellooooo!

A.   May 16th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

That's not even a tiny bit funny.

Karen in Cape Cod   May 16th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

I support Hillary Clinton, however, that comment WAS NOT FUNNY!

Bob Indianapolis, IN   May 16th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Glad that Jesus loves you, Huckster! No one else with half a brain or any interest in science does!

Scott ATL   May 16th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

I hope Huckabee is not suggesting that someone may try to shoot Barack Obama???

We're starting to see some ole Jim Crow type tactics...wow I'm sure he will say that it was not intended to be that way, but hmmmmmm...

Lauren-CO   May 16th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

That is actually not funny.
What an idiot

white female   May 16th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Mike (LOSER) HUCK OR BEE that was not funny, you are as bad as your hating party members that why your standing in the spot you are in a loser and Sen. Obama is where he is.
Typical ..........hating white man, that cling to his Gun, his religon and hating other that he don't understand are don't want to understand.
Please ask God to forgive you tonight before you go to sleep.......because he knows and hear ALLLLLLL.

JA Cook   May 16th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

That's about as stupid a joke as any.

Huckabee normally shows a pretty good sense of humor, but jokes about shooting at candidates are not funny.

It doesn't fit with the overall mentality the NRA should be promoting either; that of solving problems or disagreements with bullets.

tell the truth   May 16th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

We should ban guns. How many more kids must die before american address this problem. People are shooting up college campus, shop mall and everything else. We needed to address this problem. Please wake up American and stop hidding the truth. I will be voting for Obama because he tells the truth more than McCain or Hilliary and the rest of the jokers. They are trying to play you.

Go Obama

RB   May 16th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Not funy at all. Absolutely inappropriate! I hope the media does its job and holds Huckabee accountable.

Johnny   May 16th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

I see nothing funny about someone aiming a gun at a presidential candndidate or any other human bieng for that matter. With the current tones in the political cycle comments of this type are uncalled for . What would Gov. Huckaby do if a gun was pointed at him?

Lana   May 16th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Somebody arrest Huckabee and throw him in jail.

sally in cali   May 16th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

I think Cheney should take Huckabee out duck hunting.

Shame on you Huckabee. And you call yourself a preacher or was that a panderer.

La Raza.   May 16th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Wow! Unbelievable.

RoRo   May 16th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

That joke was not in good taste. I am disappointed in Huckabee. If someone tries to shoot Obama, it will be because this joke embolden them.

Diamond Ebs   May 16th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Somebody aimed a gun at him??????????????????????????????

What is the matter with Republicans?

Bri in Charlottesville, VA   May 16th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Huckabee you are disgrace.

Midge from Ohio   May 16th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

In this day and age a comment like that is not even funny. Shame on you Huckabee.

WeBoDave   May 16th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Governor Huckabee's remarks just aren't funny.

Bernie Moore-Knowles   May 16th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

I don't how old Huckabee is – but, I think our nation's sorrowful history makes these comments distasteful. Huckabee is the good humor man; but is way off base with his remarks.

brad   May 16th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

cnn must have made an error on this report. Nobody especially a once serious candidate would actually be that stupid to say that. On top of that a Christian one.

Alonzo Demetrius - FL   May 16th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Obama is a coward, an appeaser. He has stated this himself, that he would talk (talk, talk, talk!!!) to all heads of state including those who are likely planning attacks on our country. This is cowardice. Don't want it! Don't need it! Don't gimme it!!!!

Canadian   May 16th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Um...sorry...I don't understand. Did you mean Hillary????

TheNumantine   May 16th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

"Unconditional"???

He might have had an argument had he left that word out.

Lynnette   May 16th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Huckabee, you are a total idiot.

RocketScience   May 16th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

That was not funny in any way, shape or form.

Sharon Minnesota   May 16th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Huckabee, that was an uncalled for remark. I'm supporting John McCain but those kind of foolish statements do not help him.

What in the world???

52 year old Baltimore ,CPA, Black Women   May 16th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

I am a hiliary supporter still!!!!! but who cares about Huckabee was he missing the news folks talking about him

Cammi317   May 16th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

That is not funny AT ALL. He should apologize immediately.

Tjaye   May 16th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Wouldn't a normal person take cover if a gun were aimed at him?

I don't get the joke.
