CNN Anchor Don Lemon talks politics with Ludacris and Tommy Lee

ATLANTA (CNN) - I’m not exactly sure how it happened. But yesterday I found myself involved in an intense discussion about politics in the middle of the newsroom with…. Wait for it…. rapper Ludacris and rocker Tommy Lee. The two men were here to promote their new reality show “Battleground Earth.” In the show both artists try to out green each other while trying to coax viewers into environmental consciousness.

Out of the gate I asked about green backlash. Many people feel like this entire “going green” movement has become more marketing than reality. They agreed that while people might see it that way, it’s not necessarily so, at least in their view.

Tommy Lee admits he’s not a political junkie - he says he rarely watches television or listens to news reports. So he had no opinion on the presidential candidates’ environmental policies. In fact, he had no opinions on any of their policies. “Man, tell you the truth, I only listen to music,” he said in front of the entire room and about four cameras. He seemed sincere. I didn’t press him.

Ludacris, however, was very opinionated. He very strongly said to me, “I support Barack Obama.” He is happy with Obama’s environmental policies, and keenly aware of just how much attention this election is garnering from the American people. But when I tried to press him on other issues like race, religion and HIV in the black community, he steered the conversation back to his stance on the environment. He did promise, however, to address those issues with me in another interview at another time. Smooth. Ludacris has come a long way in a short time: from rapper to social activist to environmental cheerleader.

As he and Tommy Lee walked off, entourage and reality TV cameras in tow, I thought to myself: if someone had told me at breakfast that I’d be talking with Tommy Lee and Ludacris later in the day about the environment and politics I would have called them a liar, which just goes to show, you never know. For hanging out just a bit with music superstars, I got mad props from my colleagues here at CNN.

To the idiots who refer to Ludacris as a "high-school dropout" he actually attended COLLEGE at Clark Atlanta University where he studied communications!

Is that a veiled attempt at racism?

An American in Canada for David   May 16th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

Tell them when they get off drugs they can discuss intellectual subjects such as who's policies are better, who has character and substance and who will be ready on day one.

And that they are actually discussion the most prestigious job in America, the leader of the free world... JJJEEEEEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Kactus_Kat   May 16th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

Well, other than giving me something MORE to rant about, this article was a true waste of energy – both personal & earthly kinds!

Ludacris was caught, obviously, being just that, Ludacris. A black man for a black man. A black man, not knowing Obama's platform or views and deciding he is the best qualified person for the job.

This is not a surprise in America. We pick people because they look nice, they smell nice, they have an education, and they don't live in a trailer. I'm betting that's about all Ludacris knows about Obama – and I'm betting Obama knows even less about him.

The lack of mentality in the news media never ceases to both shock and appall me.

*yawns*

That is a great thing. I hope that they campaign to get out the vote so that everyone gets a chance to vote this year and hopefully it will be fair and just.

Seriously, who cares?

Who are these people really? Why do we consider their views important enough to receive news coverage?

What a joke CNN.

Having met Tommy at Apple during their reunion tour with Motley Crue it is clear the guy is a big kid who won't win awards for being "deep," but will get credit for being sincere and upfront.

He is who he is and just an artist who makes his living as an artist with no designs to enter into Politics or other areas.

I can see him being serious about the environment, as much as Tommy can be seeing as his ex-wife is a strident supporter of PITA.

At any rate, the guy is just a very honest, friendly, nice guy who won't stir the pot much. He's just a straight up musician.

Drew   May 16th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Are you kidding me? Who cares what these guys think. I can't believe CNN has posted this. This type of report should be in the cartoon section of the local newspaper. Since when does Tommy Lee, a rock star who is probably still hung over and apparently in a close second to Ozzy Osbourne to a self induced heart attack, and Ludacris, a rapper who makes his living off well rapping, become the voice of the common man. These men provide entertainment and entertainment alone. There is nothing wrong with that. This country has afforded them that opportunity and they made the best of it. Good on them. But in no way do they represent the common man. They have luxurious lifestyles, millions of dollars and apparently living THEIR " American dream." Why doesn't CNN get out of their office chairs, earn a paycheck, and do some real reporting and talk to some normal people and get their opinion on what's REALLY GOING ON. Whoever wrote this article, but more importantly approved this article should refer back to their Journalistic roots and realize that they may want to put a filter on bottom rung thinking (stupid ideas) next time. I clicked on this link to see if this was a joke.... unfortunately it wasn't. In closing, for the moderator, if you don't post this please do something with it...take it to your supervisor as feedback for the future

Matt   May 16th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

It is also really funny to me how some people say Obama's campaign is hate filled. How do you figure? Your only arguement is something his former pastor said, which was taken out of context. Who are the people spewing hate? He is about bringing America together, unless you missed every speach he has given you would see that. That is why he has refraigned from attacking unless attacked. And to those say he is racist? After being raised by his WHITE mother and WHITE grandparents? Ignorance astounds me.

Matt   May 16th, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Pat Riot, in case you missed it, Obama's supporters are generally the more educated people. Hillary is the one getting the less educated vote.

Eli   May 16th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

The only reason this is news to CNN is because this rapper says he is for Obama, WOW what a shocker. Since his name was the only one brought up this is very news worhty for their GOLDEN BOY.

Candidate's could not, in any way, shape, or form say ANYTHING
about their opponent! They should only be allowed to talk about
their own merit's and ambitions! People are sick and tired of the
mud-slinging insults and it, frankly, makes the Candidates look

Okay, while I agree that this isn't the most newsworthy article, I have to disagree with a theme that I see here. I'm not sure about Tommy Lee, but Ludacris graduated from high school and attended Georgia State University where he studied music management and interned as a DJ.

I know Mike G listed some of his bio, but I had to reiterate it.

charles   May 16th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

Sam and Riot and whoever else decides to say something about these two, read the post again first, then read the bio for Ludacris. Only Luda stated anything about Obama and being a supporter of him. And Ludaris finished college and was not some thug that got a record contract out of no where. If you lived in Atlanta you'd know he worked as a radio personality for years before breaking in to his own music. I swear, a lot of ya'll just find any reason at all to criticize any person that supports Obama. You don't see people calling popular Hillary supporters names. Oh yeah, she barely has any (that was a low blow but it's time ya'll came around and stopped fighting the fact that your candidate lost).

One can say that experience trumps, when it comes to national security. but by looking at what this administration as gotten us into, I can't say too much about experience at this point. Bush and McCain are supposed to be most experienced, however, ironically, we are
in one of most worst economical and foreign policy nightmares in history. So much for experience. Maybe it takes more than experience like....... COMMON SENSE.

What idiots insert in the middle of a sentence to create a state of suspense, usually with a sarcastic overtone.

I won’t use “wait for it” in a sentence, because that would qualify me as an idiot, per above definition.

Bukky- Balt   May 16th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Ummm how come Tommy Lee is the one that know NOTHING about politics but Ludacris is the one automatically branded a HS dropout.

Luda went to college, but tommy lee DID NOT. Does this say anything about "misconceptions" that some people have?

Linda   May 16th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Others have pointed out already that the lesser educated tend to favor Hillary over Obama.

I will point out additionally that Obama himself is a constitutional law professor...

For the record – I'm against ENTITLEMENT!!! Hillary isn't OWED this race because she's white, bill's wife, or a woman. It's crazy how the people of this country that aren't entitled to ANYTHING because they've already raped, pillaged and destroyed everything they’ve ever touched are they main ones who feel like the world owes them EVERYTHING.

Charlotte   May 16th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

I am forced to blog off topic because CNN closes a topic so fast or the Obama-bots have their fingers on a hair keyboad just wating for every topic. They must not work or have computer type jobs that they are not doing. Anyway, why is anything that is said about Obama is considered shameful? Obama can only cry so many times before he looks really pathetic. Why is he suddenly wearing a flag pen? He wouldn’t be pandering, now would he?

gary   May 16th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Wow, are you confusing him with Hillary supporters? All the "polls" and even the candidate herself said that she has the under educated vote.

So because Luda supports Obama, it means it is because he is black? Are you kidding me? There are so many blacks that are stunch supporters of Hillary's so that argument does not stand up so stop making the insinuations.

It seems to me that Hillary supporters are so quick to cry foul when they see insulting posts by Obama supporters but then hypocrisy just hits that fan as they spew their hate filled posts.

the environment is a non-issue, that none of the three candidates will likely even put to a vote. yes, it actually is an issue, but it's such a minority of people who actually care about it.

Sounds like Tommy Lee should vote for Hillary. Since he "rarely watches TV or listens to news reports" he is probably unaware that Bill made a mockery of the White House when he was President and if Hillary is elected as either President or Vice President Bill will have another chance to disgrace this nation as First Husband/Second Husband. Lee will not remember how Bill spent all his time on intern affairs and not on foreign affairs and that is why we are in Iraq now. Lee would likely believe that Hillary actually loves Bill and his cheating ways but not think that Hillary only has him along only for the voters she thinks Bill can still attract. Tommy Lee would probably love to get invited to the White House to party with Bill (presuming other uneducated voters elect Hillary). Bill wouldn't have much to do as First Husband so he could introduce Lee to a lot of new, young, interns. Sounds like a perfect plan to me.....

Millionaire entertainers can afford being green. As the purchasing power of the dollar continues to plummet (thanks to low interest rates by the Federal Reserve to pander to a few million homeowners), they aren't going to give a darn about buying "green" products at a hefty premium. They're going to be worried about just feeding and clothing their families. Give them a quality product at a low price – who cares about being "green." Let someone else worry about it in 100 years. The planet's not going to burn up.
10 years from now as the planet's 10+ billion people compete for resources like oil, coal, steel, corn, etc – no one is going to care about being green. Wait and see! :)

Re: Huckabee's stupid comments at the NRA event –

This is a typical comment from a conservative supposedly godly white man. It doesn't surprise me in the least. He can get away with this and more, however, because he's a white man.

He's bitter because nobody believed in his campaign. He's no different than our current administration and the country has all but proven that we're ready for a change. Whether that change comes in a great black man with wonderful vision for this country's future and the future of the world or in an old saggy faced crybaby pseudo liberal white woman with spite and entitlement in her heart – we will have change. The majority is speaking and we're saying "YES WE CAN". We will have a dem (preferably Obama) in the oval office in '08 and (I predict) with another democratic congress – YES WE WILL!!! Later for that sorry old bigot and his cheap shots. He's simply trying to maintain some relevancy after his pathetic attempt at becoming the next potus.

So if you are going to be negative then at least get your information straight.

Well, there is a possibility that the statement may be true. But to think that people will support Hillary in 2012 after many of you plan on turning your back on the Democratic party because your candidate lost, YES LOST, are greatly mistaken.

Slow day or what? Who cares what these two think. Get to some real news please.

NC Voter   May 16th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

I am so happy that John Edwards will not consider the vice presidency with Obama. Edwards should also not be AG or hold any other post in an Obama administration. I supported Edwards until he withdrew after South Carolina. Edwards carries little clout in NC except with the establishment of the NC Democratic Party. He had a hard time winning the US Senate. So what does his endorsement mean in NC. NOTHING! And, yes, I am a registered Democrat.

Fred, Atlanta GA   May 16th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

To A real american: why is it a shock that ludacris is supporting barack oh I get it, a lot of whites feel that it's racist for a black person to support another viable black candidate for president when in fact black people have supported white candidates since day one. But no one claimed racism when whites supported their own. So your right what a SHOCK!

Angus McDugan   May 16th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

I think Obama should be bust'n a sag so this whole range of supporters can feel that Obama identifies with them.

No Way   May 16th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Big deal. It is right there with Springsteen and Elton! Nothing to look at here people.

Pat Riot   May 16th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Ohh and PS. Jamaal, by definition a movement stops...but a Revolution persists. There is only one candidate that has started a rEVOLution and we all know who that is.

mitchell from arkansaw   May 16th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

did you burn one with 'em?

Pat Riot   May 16th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Figures that Ludacris supports Obama. Most highschool dropouts seem to. Probably because they've never read the constitution.

Justo - Vancouver   May 16th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Way to go LUDA....... Vancouver – CANADA for OBAMA!
Make us proud baby...

Attorney Douglas Palaschak   May 16th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Ludaris and Tommy Lee should refrain from political comment until they each finish high school.

Billy From Fla   May 16th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

TOMMY LEE... OH MY GOD..If I were Obama I wouldn't mention
this to anyone.

Tommy Lee is the scum of the earth. Obama has had some great
entertainers support him, and for that he can be proud, but
Tommy Lee..He is a disgrace to this nation.

Mike - Texas   May 16th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

You have got to be kidding me.

And this is news worthy why???????????????????

It must be a slow news day.

a REAL American   May 16th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Who cares? Ludacris supports Obama, what a shock!

Blake   May 16th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

I am sure Lou Dobbs was giving you "mad props" Lou doesn't like anyone or give anyone a high five remember. It is extremly marketable to be against everyone.

theresa in Prattville, AL   May 16th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

So What? Obama is the President. Ludacris knows his stuff but just doesn't wish to share it at the moment. You see we like to sit back and watch how things play out. We meaning black folks. As far as Tommy Lee, hey I don't blame him one bit for not taking much time to engage in the politics. It's getting out of hand. Tommy knows who he will vote for. I like them both but are they supposed to be somebody we should respect in their political answers? Get Real.....

proud army and navy mom   May 16th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

my daughter listens to these singers. tommie lee needs to stop drinking and read. Ludacris surprised me. He spoke quite eloquently. I was impressed with the young man. good job
