Watch part of Barack Obama's remarks Friday.

(CNN) – Barack Obama struck back hard at President Bush and John McCain Friday, accusing them of hypocrisy and of distorting his position on dialogue with nations hostile to the United States, telling a South Dakota crowd that “I’m running for president to change course, not to continue George Bush’s course.”

“I want to be perfectly clear with George Bush and John McCain, and with the people of South Dakota,” he said at a Watertown campaign stop. “If George Bush and John McCain want to have a debate about protecting the United States of America, that is a debate that I'm happy to have any time, any place and that is debate I will win because George Bush and John McCain have a lot to answer for.”

In his comments before the Israeli Knesset Thursday, Bush seemed to equate the Illinois senator’s foreign policy views with those of Nazi appeasers in the years before World War II, though he did not mention any names. Obama strongly criticized the president for the remarks Friday, calling them “the kind of appalling attack that's divided our country and that alienates us from the world.”

On Friday, Obama also fired back at McCain for saying Thursday that the Democratic senator was not qualified to protect the nation. “[John McCain] talked about elevating the tone of debate in our country. He talked about reaching out in a bipartisan fashion to the other side. Then not an hour later he turned around and embraced George Bush's attack on Democrats,” said Obama, who called the Arizona senator’s Iran policy “naïve and irresponsible.”

“He jumped on a call with a bunch of bloggers and said that I wasn't fit to protect this nation that I love because I wanted to sit down and negotiate with tough diplomacy with countries like Iran. Accused me of not being fit…[or] being able to protect this nation,” he added.

He said both Bush and McCain “have a lot to answer for” over the war in Iraq and the failure to find Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda’s continuing strength, among other continuing foreign policy problems. “They are going to have to explain why it is that Iran is able to fund Hezbollah and poses the greatest threat to America and Israel and the Middle East in a generation. That's the Bush-McCain record on protecting this country.

The McCain campaign said Obama’s speech was a “partisan rant.”

“It was remarkable to see Barack Obama’s hysterical diatribe in response to a speech in which his name wasn’t even mentioned,” said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds. “It would be a wonderful thing if we lived in a world where we don’t have enemies. But that is not the world we live in, and until Senator Obama understands that, the American people have every reason to doubt whether he has the strength, judgment and determination to keep us safe.”

All we hear is change, change, change. How about solution, solution, solution. Okay change is great but what is your solution, seriously?

It sounds like someone is trying to sell us, the citizens a Ford Pinto. You can talk to the talk, but can you walk the walk? Experience counts. Instead of the I'm better than you crap, you see that in high school.

joey, atlanta   May 16th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

My take is Bush was referring to another president, Jimmy Carter, who had just recently undertook to negotiate with the terrorists Hamas and who was snubbed by the Israeli leadership. But guilty minds can read things anyway they want.

Just shows that something funny happens to Obama when Clinton is around, she spooks him...and others too. He's strong confident when she's not around, just the way I like him. However, it does prove Hillary's steely mettle.

What's your problem, you got something against smart intelligent people? Sorry you were born a retard, but that's not Obama's fault. Blame it on your parents for in breeding. red neck hicks. What, say something!

I would like to personnally thank GWB for making Obama look like the most brilliant foriegn policy since Sam Nunn. He also made Obama look strong, presidential and measured in his approach to the complicated middle eastern problems.

I guess that is payback to McCain for being the Republican pain in Bush's $$$ during his eight years.

This is just too good to watch.

VB Lincoln Park NJ   May 16th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

A "real American" obviously has no capacity to think for himself (herself), like so many Bush A#$ kissing Orwellian sheep.

In any event, January 20, 2009 will hopefully be a day of celebration of the end of this eight year long horrendous nightmare.

Mol   May 16th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

I haven't seen any problem on Bush's statement. He just read what has been written for him. Who is to be blamed, the articulator or the reader.

I doubt he has a confidence to speak from his own. Thanks to all talk show hosts, he completly lost his mind nowadays.

Please, at least he is President of the United States Of America. The one and Only nation in the universe.

Interesting, but not enough to keep reading. Save your shots at me. I won't be hear to read them. I'm going where people "think" then talk.

Bush was drunk and McCain forgot to take all of his pills, or maybe Cindy took them. What a couple of old creeps.

Rose   May 16th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

The fact is that Bush never once mentioned Obama's name during the course of his speech. Why would Obama be upset unless he knows exactly what he said in the debate with Clinton would come back to haunt him. He was wrong then and he is wrong now. If a person feels strongly about what they said then they should have nothing to worry about. He has plenty to answer for, he needs to tell us why his campaign won't release Michele's thesis from Princeton until the day after the general election. They have a lot of gall asking Cindy McCain to release her tax returns.

I'd like to add that violence has never solved anything and hate begets hate. The only way to move past this is to talk and negotiate past our differences. Only Obama, the Democrats, Independents and level-headed Republicans (I.E. Colin Powell, Chuck Hagel) will do that. McCain and the majority of the Republican establishment has no clue.

For your information, some of the Washington Insiders admitted it was directed at Obama. And McCain was explicitly talking about Obama.

WeBoDave   May 16th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Senator Obama did well. Some of it was off the cuff. He is obviously superior to Bush in non scripted remarks and probably better than McCain. I wish Obama had done a little better to be honest. It is an absolute joke that the White House press secretary, Perino, denied these remarks were directed at Obama. Who were they directed at? Gates? Don't fall for these lies in '08.

M J Curry   May 16th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Finally, a front-running Democrat who calls McCain and Bush on their strategy of lies and smear tactics. Finally a front-running Democrat who puts the focus back where it belongs: Bush and now his clone McCain have too long been allowed to ignored the fact that the Republicans didn't go after their first demon bin Laden (because he's not hiding in a country with vast oil reserves?)– in favor of destroying the lives of over 8 million Iraqis and several thousand American soldiers.

Soon, I hope, Sen. Obama will remind us that 14 of the 17 9/11 terrorists were Saudis and the other 3 were from Yemen and Egypt! NO Iraqis.

The Lone Ranger   May 16th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Here's the winning strategy for McCain:

1. Pick Huckabee as VP, and put him on the road in the old Confederate states and rust-belt states. His theme song will be Onward Christian Solders. His issues will be moral decency, making child molesting a federal crime. The forces of light attacking the forces of darkness.

2. There is a lot of racial anger in the South and Midwest. If Obama is the nominee, the Republicans need to make Obama's minister the center of conversation. They are already running hate ads asking local Democrats to repudiate Obama or explain why they hate America too.

3. Obama has a wife who speaks her mind – a fatal flaw. Run ads over and over of her saying something critical of America. Put lots of flags and eagles in the background as the announcer says, "Are you for Mrs. Obama or are you for America. It will make Black people angry, but they're going to vote 80% for Obama anyway.

4. Have some off-the-record chats with oil companies. Persuade them to lower prices until November 10th or so. They can make the money back later.

5. Get out the libertarian drum and start beating it: "Free Market vs Socialism" Vote Democrat and you will no longer be able to choose your own doctor, your child's teacher will be gay, homosexual marriage, etc. etc.

6. Get sponsors to whip talk-radio into line. Make them all mouth the Republican talking points exclusively for six months.

Americans usually respond very positively to a campaign like this. Republicans all know the script, so they know their parts. Democrats will waver, waffle, and meander, terrified that they will say something controversial.

I will be voting for the Democrat, since no Liberal (read, Harry Truman) is in the race. A Democrat in office is better than nothing. A Republican in office is worse.

Cleve Leonard   May 16th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

I think it is "laughable" that some people think the only way to negotiate is through bombing and war, like the Bush Admin and the Republicans think. The current US policy is no more thatn the big bully policy. Obama offers to talk through peaceful and diplomatic means only, with war being a last resort only. Why does the US government see fit to stick their nose in whatever they see fit in the name of American interests.

Give me a break! Those of you who criticize Obama for having a lack of foreign policy experience should remember that Bush had never even traveled out of the country before becoming president! I know 10 year olds who have a better grasp of the world than this President. If we elect someone like Obama, who uses words with more than 1 or 2 syllables, we will have made a leap in our leadership. And it sickens me that people who support Hillary would actually rather vote for a third Bush term then support someone whose policies will be almost in-line with Hillary's. In my book, anyone who supports Hillary and then decides to not support Obama should he get the nomination, is almost certainly a racist. If you're not a racist than you are certainly not voting on substance. What is it? If not Hillary, someone else who looks older and experienced? Give me a break. I guess if Obama dyes his hair grey you would vote for him? Maybe so if you're that dumb. In the end I look at how, before we went to Iraq, we had a mission to find bin Laden. then what happened? Bush decided to murder 5000 more Americans in Iraq. As I said before, a 10 year old would tell you that if bin Laden attacks us you... drumroll please.... GET BIN LADEN. Only an idiot takes out his problems on others who did not cause them to begin with. That's like someone hitting me and me turning around and punching someone else. Makes no sense. Please do not criticize Obama's foreign policy when what we have now has got to be the worst foreign policy ever, perpetrated by one of the stupidest Presidents this country, or the world, could have ever elected. You know why we don't sit down and negotiate with our enemies, because Bush cannot be taken seriously. McCain may talk a bit more intelligently, but then again, he would rather have another 5000 Americans killed in a war we should have never started in the first place. I choose intelligence, I choose thought and consideration, I choose common sense, and I choose a human being. Obama. The end.

Jesse   May 16th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

America, I will put it this way, VOTE YOUR INTERESTS!! The Republican party has made a living by bringing up issues that have no relevance to a campaign, RELIGION, GAY MARRIAGE, ABORTION, but the biggest one is FEAR. Don't let this happen, all accross the country in 04 people voted for Bush because of these issues and now the same people are paying $4 a gallon for gas, losing there jobs to other countries, having their homes forclosed on them, we have a 9 trillion dollar defecit in this country, so please people wake up and VOTE YOUR INTERESTS. As for these comments thank you G.W. you are now pulling our party together to Unite behind Obama, thank you.

Sylvia   May 16th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Peace is not in the vocabulary of Bush or McCain. What Obama need to do is pressure Mr. McCain on where Osama Bin Laden is? They -Bush and McCain – can talk tough all they want to, but they have nothing to show for when Osama Bin laden and al queda is at their strongest. Bush never won the war that never should have been started. He is a failure and McCain running on a failed policy of the past 7 years. There is alot of questions that remain unanswered that we as American people deserve to know and make the republicans accountable for their failures at the taxpayers' expense.

Obama is right on track. Go get them, Barrack!! Stick to your guns.

It makes sense that we talk to Iran and others. Not that I am defending Iran, but it is only natural that people might want to protect themselves when a superpower like USA invade their neighbor's country. Why wouldn't Iran think we won't do to them what we did to Iraq. We had no real justification for invading Iraq. It's understandable that a country would want to protect themselves.

A lot of these comments show just how polarized this country is which is not productive and doesn't create much hope for change.

However, there is NO hope for change without the effort to make it happen. Such is the case with Obama's interest in meeting with our enemies. I don't think he plans to "negotiate," but talking face-to-face in an attempt to change the present course is still better than pontificating from a distance and accomplishing nothing.

Obama is smart. He seems to be cool under fire. He isn't fond of incidiary rhetroric. He doesn't have a "cowboy" mentality. He may fail, but it won't be because he was afraid to do something different than that which has failed in the past.

As an Independent, I would like to make the following points and anyone who wants to say something to my points please do so intellectually rather than swearing or calling names and do so point by point.

1. If you are interviewing some one for the Job, would you select on basis experience or basis of what he or she has plans for the future?
Answer: If you want a proven record then you would pick experience as you know experience cannot be achieved in the future.

2. If you are interviewing some one for the Job, Would you select some one who stood firm in times of trials and tribulations or some one who plans to stand firm in times of trials and tribulations?
Answer: I would select some one who stood firm and shown character.

Bush-McCain 0 Obama 3. Good for him. I love how Obama is getting the Repblicans to scramble to make any sort of argument that Bush is a smart, strong leader, but make no case to say this country is better off after 8 years of the moron. The republican policy is wrong, their support of this president is wrong, and as we saw in Mississippi, the people of this country are not going to take it anymore. Republicans GET OUT and give us back our country.

The Democrats are playing right into the hands of the Republicans on this one. We really need a new beginning and continuing to follow that same path we are on with President Bush is not the answer.

Selfish desires empowers the ego and that creates arrogance and misuse of power which delivers its product of war.

We are tired of the politics of war, it is not helping, it is demeaning us.

History has informed us that only sticks and carrots will cause rogue nations to give up nuclear weapons research. Examples include North Korea and Lybia. I'm certain Iran is a perfect fit in this category. the US military is over stretched and both McCain and Iran's ahmadejad are aware of that. The question is how best to deal with Iran. I say Obama is right. Have a tough talk with them while you strengthen and regroup your military by withdrawing from Iraq.

Obama is quick to point fingers at others for needing to answer and clarify certain policies............I suggest he answer is own proposition of talking to such dictators as the Iranian president. Obama insist as presidents, he will talk to the Iranian president without pre-condidtions but with preparations....what does that mean? Considering the Iranian president have said that he wants to wipe Israel off the face of the earth can they are corpes in the middle east....what exactly is Obama planning as his coversations with the Iranian governement? Appears that Obama is the one that have created over-inflated rehorics that has little specifics. And so who is more cleared on their positions? and who needs to clarify and answer? Is it Mccain who has made it clear that he will not talk to terrorists without pre-conditions or who have vowed to kill all people of a nation? or is it Obama who have said he will talk with terrorist with preparations but haven't said what that means and how that differ to pre-conditions.....nor has he provide specifics to what exactly the objectives are along with the strategy and goals of a non-preconditioned talk with terrorists. Give me a break! No spin can hide the overwhelming inexperience that Obama has shown on foreign policy....this is scary stuff!

Seems to me that Bush should hold his tongue when comparing others to "Nazi appeasers," considering the fact that that's how his Grandfather made a lot of his fortune. Bush was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but a gold one, and it was likely forged from the fillings of Holocaust victims.

Mr. Jaraski White   May 16th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Obama is very capable of holding a debate with both Bush and McSame present and he would literally crush them on the issues. Barack Hussain Obama is a real world leader who can literally relate to everyone on this planet. He is a diverse figure who will be able to sit down and deal with Iran and the Saudi's. He will end turmoil in the middle east and he will be the greatest president who ever lived.

Hallelujah Barack, praise the Lord, Shabach!

Chuch   May 16th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Man this is getting good. Its going to be fun to see Obama lose it when they play his comments in the debate over and over about how he will meet with Iran with no pre conditions.
I cant wait to hear McSane and nut job Bust's come back on this.

An American living in Germany   May 16th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

People living in America have no idea how much we are disliked around the world. It wasn't always like this, we used to be the nation other countries looked to for leadership, but since Bush came along people have no respect for us anymore. And it will be the same with McCain. What a shame.
However I do have hope in Obama, I believe he can bring about the change we need, it is time to go in a new direction.

Go Obama !!

Julia Warren   May 16th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Go Barack! Finally someone asking the ultimate question, why hasn't the US found, tried and hung Osama bin Laden? The US put Saddam Hussein and his sons and other followers to death for what? Bush/Cheney killed Saddam in the name of greed, not terrorism. The tragic events of 9/11 and the lost lives were used as a diversion to go after Saddam. If we concentrated our military effots on Afghanistan bin Laden would be dead. As long as bin Laden is alive, the Republicans can continue to use him to put fear into Americans.

Blackwoman, Ohio   May 16th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

God forbid anyone say anything negative about the "Chosen One". They should all be shot. I cant believe it but I actually agree with Bush on this one. Obama is just too inexperienced to be President. He needs to wait a few years and develop bc now it would be scary to have him as our president.

1988 – US gov't under Reagan sells arms to Iran and the higher ups like Oliver North were indicted.

"Mr. Shultz reiterated that the United States continues to have indirect talks with Iran through third countries. "And we're certainly prepared for direct talks if the setting is right," he said. " NY Times, 1988

Republicans either don't know their history are don't care – Americans have always confronted their allies wtih measures other than outright war. And mostly to good effect.

War should always be only a last resort, when ALL ELSE fails. we haven't tried the ALL ELSE yet. Iran is stronger than it has been because of BUSH/CHENEY. And McCain agrees with their ways of doing things. Can we expect a different outcome if McCain gets in?

There is a article where it's written that McCain's codename while he was "captive" was "songbird". Why songbird? Because of his willingness to tell all to avoid torture. A former Vietnam veteran with top secret clearance says he has personally spoken to numerous POW's who dispute John McCain's claim that he refused to provide information after he was captured and tortured in Hanoi. Jack McLamb served nine years in secret operations in Cambodia and other nations before going on to become one of the most highly decorated police officer's in Phoenix history, winning police officer of the year twice before taking a role as a hostage negotiator for the FBI.
"I know a lot of Vietnam veterans and a few POW's and all the POW's that I've talked to over the years say that John McCain is a lying skunk," McLamb told the Alex Jones Show.

And you still want him to be president?

Why hasn't the MSM picked up Biden's remarks about President Bush sending him to speak to Qadaffi? And why does the current president address Kim Jong il as "Dear Mr Chairman"? Is that not appeasement? North Korea has the technology to make WMDs. They are far more dangerous and yet it's "Dear Mr. Chairman". In Senator Biden's words "Bull***t!"

Mccain will never make it to the White House without a formal invitation from PRESIDENT OBAMA. The GOP is done for good.

Hamas has not changed its position on any issue.
But John McCain changes his positions to suite the current political climate.

McCain is a people pleaser, willing to say anything to win.
He should change his slogan from Straight talk express to FLIP-FLOP EXPRESS

The GOP knows very well Bush has made a mess of the economy, in Iraq, and our current healthcare is broken. So their plan was to focus on Rev. Wright's comments against all Democrats.

But......
Now that the GOP has lost 3 important elections to the democrats, in Republican’s “strongholds” by using Obama’s former pastors comments as attacks, against Democrats, what are they going to do in November? ...... talk about the economy ? ........Iraq?.....or Healthcare? They can't !!!

Americans are maturing politically, and GOP should the prepared to face the issues instead of hiding behind useless attack ads.

The hipocracy of Bush-Macain failed diplomacy is coming to light. They know that Obama has common sense foreign policy and they are using their fear mongring rhetoric that shapes their policy to acuse him of the same thing they are advocating behind the seen. I an glad this is a CHANGE election.

jennifer murphy   May 16th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

these people are so threatened by Obama. Picking on him for every little thing and working into a big thing. Now even a President, what right does he have to even say anything? Look at the situation we're in right now, thanks to Bush, not Obama. I mean are the republicans blind, they really just need to sit down and be quiet. Let the democrats fix this mess were in, and we really don't need any help from them, thanks.

Linned   May 16th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Thanks Senator Obama for getting right on it and not letting the two buffons get away with trying saying things which are not true. One word of advice for Senator Obama. When you debate John McCain make sure you have security on stage. Surely he will get angry and stand on a foot stool and try to smack you.

Matthew   May 16th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Man.. you Hillary supporters are down right nasty. It's like those jerks who still wave the confederate flag and scream "The South will rise again". It's over... she's lost. If you want to be pissed off and use it as an excuse to jump parties than be my guest. It'll be blood on your hands come this time next year when the body count overseas is closer to 6,000.

Obama is my no means a perfect or greatly experienced politician. He's the opposite.. any everyman who still shops at Target. There was another politician from Illinois once upon a time who didn't hold very many public offices before his presidency and he's considered the greatest leader this country has ever had! If I could only remember his name...

Russ C, Seattle, Wa   May 16th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

This debate, like so many others, highlights the fact that sincere compromise is drastically needed. The rhetoric has grown to the point that nothing can be settled unless someone is willing to listen with an open mind. Even our own country is in deadlock over people taking extreme positions and stubbornly refusing to yield an inch. Is this the vision you have of a great nation? It's not mine!

A buckeye   May 16th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Which is it John, stuck in Iraq for 5 or 99 years? When will draft dodging Cheney send his family?? We know the Cheneys and Bush's won't be stuck in Iraq.

Dennis   May 16th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Good response from Obama. If you are claiming that President Bush's comments weren't directed at Obama, then you aren't keeping up with the story. Senator McCain certainly believed they were and then said he agreed.

Senator Obama had to respond. One of the greatest criticisms of Vice President Gore and Senator Kerry was that they didn't push back when these types of attacks were made on them. They weren't decisive enough, and they didn't look tough. Senator Obama is not letting that happen.

This whole "he had to wait for his speech writers bit" is nonsense. He doesn't need to call a press conference every time he has something to say. He had an event scheduled in South Dakota today. The press was going to be there. That was as good a time as any to address the issue.

Give me a man that is willing to try diplomacy over a politician that is quick to make bad judgments using faulty data or the man that sings about "bomb, bomb, bomb...bomb, bomb Iran" any day.

Grow up, Obama! You have absolutely no idea how to conduct foreign affairs or deal with terrorists. You are a total novice.

You might play well with the "American Idol" crowd, but that has nothing to do with reality. Having you for president would be like having a first year medical student doing brain surgery.

If you are the nominee, my vote will have to go to McCain....as will the votes of several of my Democratic friends.

Hillary or McCain – 2008

I Believe   May 16th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

McCain and Bush don't stand a chance in debate with Obama on policy, foreign or otherwise. Barack is a brilliant mind and possesses leadership skills that neither McCain or Bush have or even can comprehend, Brute force does not solve the issues in play in the MIddle East.

My two cents   May 16th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

My idea is this... we are fighting the fight for the bipartisan country that we live in. If that majority of Americans want out of the war- then work together to get out. Vietnam wasn't ended because the government decided it had enough time to play with helicopters, it ended because the public got TOGETHER and demanded that the troops come home.

This war is about oil. The countries that we are in now, as military, are countries that have been fighting the same way since the beginning, and nothing we can do will ever change that, they will be fighting that way for the next hundred years. We, as people have too high morals and sense of humanity to do what it would take to win a war like Iraq. We are not guerrilla warfare. We are better than that.

So if you really are looking at what politicians are saying to win the vote for nomination, do a little more research. This will be Americas next four years. Decide carefully. I don't want to bury more friends.

Jeff Smith   May 16th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

I'm tired of hearing how in-experienced Obama is. Doesn't anyone get it, that sound judgement, intelligence, ability to bring opposites together and morals are 10X's more important and if you served on a committee or in the military.

Should Obama be fortunate enough to win the primary and the general elections, I hope that he would have respect for the position. He continually called President Bush, George Bush. Jeff in Denton   May 16th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

I don't think Obama truely understands what he would be asking for in saying he would debate both McCain and Bush. First of all Obama has been in the senate less than 6 yrs and has absolutely no foreign policy experience. Secondly they repeated his comments that I have heard him make since he decided to run for president. It's funny that so many of you liberals think Bush is an idiot. History will tell how good or how bad of a president he is. "War-Mongerer"???? Did you forget that THEY attacked US?? I can hear you now. "Iraq didn't attack us!!!" Any regime that has ties to terrorism and wants the extinction of Isreal is a threat to us an our national security. I would rather be a "Warmonger" than a "Peace-Mongerer". How do you think peace is established? It's established and maintained through force alone. I know this probably won't get posted but I thought I would try anyway.

I know you're a big egomaniac right now, Obama, but just because McCain doesn't think you're not fit to protect the nation or even qualified to run it doesn't mean he doesn't want to reach out to Democrats; he just doesn't want to reach out to you.

I think it shows maturity and an acknowledgment of reality on the part of Obama.

What authority or experience do the people on this blog have to say it's a bad idea? These are the people that would love to bury and ignore these issues so someone else has to deal with them.

McCain will not talk with them but you bet he'd be content to blow them back to the stone age killing many innocent civilians in the process.

Who thinks that the U.S and Iran never talk since the Islamic Revolutions broke out? Get real people! Your politicians may want to make you believe that they do not talk at all to "States Sponsoring Terrorism" but the truth and nothing but the truth is that they talk to them behind closed door and even cooperate with them when necessary on matters of intelligence that are beneficial to their countries. Iran helped the US in the war and the defeat of the Taliban in Afganistan but not because they love America but because it is beneficial to their national security, people. They are the only strong Shia governement in that region and they feel threatened by all those Sunni governements around them. The US and a lot of "Terrorist States" do talk a lot when it is necessary and beneficial for both parties. The Bush administration was sending terrorists captured on the battle field or snatched in the street of foreign countries to Syria and other States sponsor of "Terrorism" to be "Interrogated". And this proves that they do not talk, hein? They are in bed together with "Rendition" without talking to each other? Grow up people and for how long are you going to be lied upon and duped by your politicians.

What is your problem? Obama never attackedHillary. It is quite the other war around. Stop inventing excuses to hate someone. At least be creative in that.....

I would like to remind everyone that although Bush has been in Texas for awhile, he is NOT a real Texan. And we are NOT all that stupid. I love my state and the cowboy way... but this guy is a soft handed, headed dolt.

all hat ... no cattle

I would have preferred a populist to run for president, but I will settle for Obama... I hope he gets Edwards to be A.G. Hillary as Secretary of State, and Wesley Clark to look over the military and pentagon.....

And there has to be somewhere that Biden fits into our foreign affairs... he is smart and forthright

Lucas   May 16th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

To those who say you should never talk to your enemies, perhaps you should take a course in history. Diplomacy was the only thing that saved the US from nuclear annihilation during the cold war and specifically during the Cuban Missle Crisis. The ability to call your enemy and talk them down from the perch is of supreme importance.

True American   May 16th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Bush and McCain are middle of the road Republicans – they are not anywhere near conservative except for a few issues – those of you calling them conservative are only showing your ignorance. Since obama is the most liberal senator in congress, he pretty much has no shot at winning. You liberals better pray Hillary wins your nomination because that's the only way the dems have a chance in the general election.

Just like last time, you all get worked into a frenzy thinking everyone hates Bush because you hate Bush and the media hates Bush. You think that makes it obvious that you can't lose the election. Get ready for another dose of disappointment. I only hope you don't continue down your divisive path like you have for the past 8 years.

The liberal spin machine (Biden, Obama etc) keeps distorting the truth and then accusing the republicans of being divisive. The liberal definition of bi-partisanship is for people to agree with them. I guess if you don't hold the same opinions a liberal, then you are divisive. Obama is a joke.

Bill   May 16th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

He speaks the truth!

Bush and other conservatives wish to DIVIDE us rather than UNITE us. McCain has flip-flopped on several issues due to pressure from the extreme right and I'm certain we'll see more of that as the presidential election nears.

Please please make this part of the Democratic platform, 'kay??

If you knew any history, you'd know that the ultimate goals of Adolf were not compatible with peaceful talks conducted by the ever-hopeful pacifist Chamberlain.
If you were paying attention, you'd know that Saddam was given plenty of diplomatic opportunities to abide by the UN resolutions.
If you had a clue, you'd know that Europe has been desperately trying to talk and persuade Iran for some years now, to give up the nuke development.

Holding hands and singing peace songs only works on the enlightened and rational, not thugs. Grow up.

They sure do have a lot to answer for, but who really wants to hear 4 more years of George Bush coming from McCain's mouth? Its time to turn the page. That was shameful of Bush/McCain to use Isreal and their celebration as a political agenda. Barack Obama is supported by Jewish people!

Bush and McCain – They are such losers........ Oh and McCain is against Labeling Genetically Engineered food just like Bush is because they don't want us to know that 75% of food in the USA and Canada is genetically engineered to create slowly poison us with all those toxic chemicals... Oh yea, they are really protecting americans, I don't know how people can be so stupid to vote for these morons.
what have they done to to even educate people ? Ohhh yeah they allow Splenda , it's made from sugar so it tasts like sugar ?? It's made with Chlorine bleach !!!! How can people be so gullible ?? But yes, Bush and McGAYne, they are always on the side of big pharma and big corporations and we are supposed to trust these thugs ??

They claim to protect our people but always side with companies like Monsanto who Genetically engineers and poisons all of us with their growth hormones in our milk and poisoned corn so that Monsanto can spray more round up ready herbicie insecticeds and pesticed because the corn is genetically engineered to be resistant to that while the rest of us when we eat it get poisoned over time.. Yeah and Remember Ashcroft ?? He got most of his donations from Monsanto...Ohhh and the EPA, most of the big wigs on EPA were with Monsanto, hmmm any wonder why they haven't done anything good lately to help our environment lately ??? It's the Bush admininstration which give power to companies like this and you think I will vote for McCain to continue Loser Bush's path ??? Hellllll Nooooooooo..

Obama will win and I'm glad he lashed out at those 2 old losers....We need a younger person to run this country....

And Georgie can't do anything to another country, he has to take Bagdad first! And this super power cannot do that! And do not blame the boys on the ground, these kids are super, our leaders are not worth a crap. So you had better talk, and keep talking, and keep talking. The world knows that we cannot take Bagdad, so you had better talk.

Neutral, wake up! Obama "attacked" (and I hesitate to use that word, because he has done nothing NEAR what Billary has done to him) Billary not because she is a woman; but because this is POLITICS. It's a tough game; and if a candidate or a candidate's supporter can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. You're beginning to see the strength that Obama has as he blasts the Repugs; he showed great reservation (and continues to) towards Billary. Oh, and by the way, I'm a woman. I've been a strong supporter of Obama from the get go; and have never liked Billary because of her tactics and her divisiveness. To follow the "women must vote for the woman candidate" ideaology is absurd. People, not just women, should vote for who they feel is the best person to lead our contry in the direction that it needs to go (in the total OPPOSITE direction that we're headed right now, btw); and from what I've seen, read and heard (including her "White House years"), Billary is NOT that person.

Obama 2008 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

American Public   May 16th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Senator Obama has a lot to answer for too, since we do not really know who he is and where he really stands in terms of immigration, health care, guns, gay marriages, energy, etc...

While in the Illinois legislature, he voted ‘Present’ too many times on
tough issues rather than take a firm stand of YES or NO on them.

BX   May 16th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

This is Obama's Achilles' heel...he's stuck on this one and won't be able to convince the American peeps that being the nice guy with Iran is the right approach.

To quote Patton, "All real Americans love to fight."

TimeToUnite   May 16th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Bottom line...McCain is too old, sorry he has health issues also , we need a younger president who knows how to bring up our economy as well as get the heck out of iraq and broker more friends in that region so oil will go down... They are squeezing us out yet we pretend that it's not so. That region feels there are more ways to kill a mocking bird, we have to figure out there are diplomatic ways to get oil, and waging war is not one of them. We need to bring troops home and shore up our own borders, and improve our own infrastructure. 911 happened on the republicans watch, now it is time for them to step down.

toby hill   May 16th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

To all you " if not Hillary , McCain" people

Listen to Hillary Clinton when she says voting for McCain would be a mistake. It's more important for the country to defeat the Republicans.
There is little or no difference between the platforms of HRC and BO.
So don't be spiteful with your vote-it's not what the democratic party wants or needs.

It's time to stop the ugliness in this discourse. And CNN, you should do a better job filtering out blatant hate speech(from all sides) from these comments.

Maybe, finally, intelligence and honesty will win the day, instead of the fear and lies that have been perpetuated by the recent neoconservative leadership. W.'s statements were full of projections without logical backing; it was designed to scare voters away from the facts, and ultimately it seems, away from the truth, and McCain jumped on the bandwagon. Not this time!

Justinian   May 16th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Can anyone really believe that some moron wrote a comment that begins, "You may not like Mr Bush, but he is very smart." and apparently with a straight face? I cannot believe that there are people who exist who actually believe that. George Bush makes many chimpanzees look staggeringly brilliant. For instance, many of them have a better comprehension of language than he does. He is a evoloutionary regression, wait maybe he's just self-aware enough to realize that and that explains the real reason he doesn't believe in evolution. Calling Goerge Bush "very smart" is a great way of signalling to people your own idiocy.

Chris, Sparta NJ   May 16th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

I'm being 100% honest here: I am a Republican. But I've been so disgusted with the current administration that I'll be voting for Obama come November. I honestly think Obama is so "green" (inexperienced) that he'll actually present a positive change because he'll be able to look at the cancer Washington has become with a fresh mind.

If Hillary wins the nomination, though, then I'm moving to Europe.

Zach B   May 16th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

News Alert, Sec of Def Gates agrees with Barack Obama. Gates has stated that we must speak with Iran. Is Bush comparing his own Sec of Defense to Hitler appeasers? Also, McCain has said negotiations with Hamas makes sense. Now he tries to strike it from the record. Too bad McSame, we already heard it. Try not to fall asleep while listening to Barack tear you and your party to pieces. Good luck trying to get back all those House seats you're losing!

Jeffrey, Apoka FL   May 16th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

The Republicans are using the same fear tactics that got Bush re-elected. When all else fails "it's the terriorist" Since he cannot lead by intellegence he will lead by fear. This has to be the worst administration in the last 100 years. States are cutting budgets at alarming rates, a recession is at hand, foreclosures are at record high and climbing and gas will be close to $5.00 by the end of the summer and the best the current adminstration can come out with is the terriorist are coming....give me a break. PRESIDENT OBAMA.

Jeff   May 16th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

David Parker   May 16th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

In 2004 election, Bush got re-elected after scaring the American voter that there was going to be an attact in the US. Since then, all we've seen has been "failure A to Z". To me I don't see any difference between Bush and MCcain. The old style of scaring voter and they took outside the US soil to scare the Jewish voters. What a disgrace.

Dan from Minneapolis   May 16th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Bush's ignorant comments were a godsend to Obama since they bind McCain to Bush's disastrous foreign policies. Obama will easily win one on one debate with McCain vis-a-vis foreign policy. It's amusing that there are so many smug repubs out there who seem to think that this is a McCain strength. McCain was dead wrong on the most important foreign policy decision in decades: the invasion of Iraq. Experience is only an advantage when your decisions have been validated by history; if they are not, it is your greatest weakness.

Go Get 'Em Barack!   May 16th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Barack, stand your ground. Good man. I hope you or Hillary get elected, but I fear for this country. Electing Bush once was excusable. Electing him twice was a disaster. The people who voted for Bush the second time are still out there, still waiting to choose. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Democrats can't even unify for their own Primary. No matter who gets the Democratic nomination, we will at least get 30% off the other candidates following.

McCain is the real deal. We got this election in the bag. How can you expect a Democrat to protect our country, and be true to what we stand for, when they aren't even loyal to their own party.

A vote for any Democrat, is a vote for losing the war in Iraq, a vote for letting Iran get nuclear weapons, and a vote for high tax's.

The problem with the Bush administration right now is that they do longer can rely on the WAS colors to scare up votes. Do you remember when they would change from Yellow , Orange, to Severe and that was when bush was running for re-election. I could vividly remember every flipping time on go to CNN they would change the colors because a threat was imminent. The moment the Repubilcans won the white house, it disappeared. So what do they do now to scare up votes they attack Obama so people would think that terrorist likes him. Do they ever stop to think that maybe other countries night prefer to negotiate with someone else other than Bush and MCcain.

To the rest of the world, and our own citizens, our government and more specifically, our President is representative of 'our country.' What do you think other countries thought of that ridiculous comment? Are you proud? To further comment on Michelle Obama's comment, she is, what 46? For the past 20 + years, we had Bush, Clinton, Bush administrations. For the past 16 years, we had Bill Clinton and George Bush. Were you proud of what the world saw of Bill Clinton and the legacy that people will remember? Are you proud of what the world saw of George Bush? Give the woman a break. She's right. I dont really support all of Bush's policies BUT one comment made on here is false. Faye from NV says that Bush did nothing to go after Bin Laden after 9/11. Its interesting to me that I remember being at Ft. Bragg when Special Operations soldiers left mearly days after 9/11. The public wouldnt know this cuz you dont need to know. Period. "Bush is smart"?!, how foolish some people can be.
Lied to at every turn with childish bullying postures and simpleton smirks. Bush makes a joke of our Presidency every time he speaks, in private or public.
At least our next President will be able to speak the english language within intelligent conversation.

Republicans have gone mad and they are just idiots and keep thinking that force is the solution for every problem. Being the richest nation, and being the leader country in many aspects in the world, USA should rather follow a humble approach and be a model to other nations. Obama has a quite a bit potentials to prove that. He doesn't have any selfish reasons to become president as Bush and Dick Cheney did, who have the companies to earn money from the back door.

Luck to Obama and curse to McCain

One4Obama08   May 16th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Peace can only be attained through Diplomacy! Iraq could have been avoided and so could have 9/11!

We need to pull out of Iraq and send the troops home. We could be spending money that goes to our military on FREE HEALTHCARE FOR EVERYONE!

Also, with money spent on the miliarty, we could eliminate poverty in this country and all of the middle east. With Obama, we all COULD BE EQUAL!!!!!

FL   May 16th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Jeff, dictators don't do diplomacy. Duh. Read history, find the contrary, and MAYBE give a model to your "hope" for future reference. If they DID, a Dem would have had this solved 10 years ago. Try again.

Michael   May 16th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

So...Mr. Obama does have a tough side. I am impressed.
I am still not sure he is the right choice, nor do I feel any of the candidates are the right choice, however he mostly certainly got my attention.

It was nice to see him speak in a more definitive tone and not just in slogans and feel good speech rhetoric.

The American people may seem at times to be more interested in their entertainment then reality, but I highyly advise all of the candidates not to play us as fools, or as uninformed or uneducated buffons. The public has awakened under the duress of a horrible economy and is ready to seriously question everyone and everything.

We voted you all in, we can vote every single one of you out. The real sleeping giant has awoken and politics as we know it has been put on notice.

The ONE who tells it how it is   May 16th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Lets face it. There is not one good candidate in this election. They all have so many issues its unbelievable how they all made it to where they are now. Be prepared for a new president to be elected in 2012 because none of these candidates will able to get a single vote by then

Doug R.   May 16th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Bush's entire presidency was based of fear and scare tactics. Let's also remember that Sept. 11th occurred on his watch and bin Laden is still at large, Iran is dangerous and al Qaeda is alive, well, and becoming stronger. This all points to his failed diplomacy and foreign policies. He has been lying to, misleading, and deceiving the American people since the day he took office. Grandpa McCain is right behind him spewing out all sorts of falsehoods and flip flops. Bush and Cheney should have both been impeached for their blatent violation of the laws of the land and the U.S. Constitution. Go back to Arizona you old hack McCain.

Lets all vote Hilary for 2012 when she ruins the chances of Obama getting elected in 2008. After all isn't that what she is really doing? Or is it making money off of her husband giving speeches? Or is it making money off of futures? Or is it whitewater?

One thing is for sure, she cannot be put in charge of a health plan. If you are old enough to remember, while Bill was in office she was put in charge of creating a universal health plan. Did she accomplish anything? No. Stop voting for Hillary and unite behind Barack for 2008, PLEASE!

Uncle Sam   May 16th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

I would find it easier to consider the merits of Sen. Obama's positions if it weren't for the utter hypocrisy and holier-than-thou attitude than exudes from his lips, especially when he condemns John McCain. These pesky facts keep getting in the way of Obama's transcendent politics:

*The continued use of the term "warmonger" by Obama surrogates to slander Sen. McCain and no denouncement by Sen. Obama.
*The continued distortions by the Obama campaign of Sen. McCain's comments regarding possible long-term troop presence in Iraq.
*Sen. Obama' continued attempt to link Pres. Bush and Sen. McCain, regardless of the truthfulness of the linkage, but merely to be used as a political gambit, likened to the "Big Lie", when something is repeated often listeners may come to actually believe it. (Such as "Change We Can Believe In").
*Sen. Obama's untruths, distortions, and omissions regarding Sen. McCain's record, policies, and vision for his presidency.

We have on the one hand a naive presidential hopeful, while on the other we have an experienced, heroic statesman with a proven record of change. Am I missing something?

Like a child who lives in his fathers house and is not afraid because he feels safe there, Sen Obama says that we are not one bit safer because of the Presidents policies. Yet there has not been one attack on us since the President has enacted his policies. Will that be the case if Obama becomes President? not likely since he knows not where his safety comers from and at what costs!

Jill   May 16th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

This makes me smile. When I got divorced, at one point we had to try a mediator. An elderly judge sat down and simply said, why dont you two just go have a coffee and talk it out. The he left.

We had been trying for over as year to setle our bitter divorce and the first thing I thought when I heard he suggestion was, I wonder if I could poison that coffee or at least throw it in my ex's face. I am certain my ex had similar thoughts.

Moral of the story: its naiive to think an old fashioned, civil 'coffee clatch' will ease the deep wounds and pain of battle worn adversaries. It is a waste of time, energy and fools nobody. And it helps nobody. Do you want someone that naiive and small minded to run America ?

This is the big leauges. There is no room for playing these kind of PR, phot-op games.

When they start off like that, I know they more than likely the person writing it is NOT BLACK. It's a faker trying to divide and conquer the party and get a rise out of the readers. People beware of fakers like this.

Its interesting that Obama thought Bush's comments were directed at him .. why is he so defensive on this .. cause he knows he is weak on this issue .. or was he trying to make political hay out of it? Interesting also that CNN adopts the Obama line on this, even though the White House said this was not a comment about Obama. Does Obamam identify with the label appeaser or something?

anymouse   May 16th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

How stupid does the GOP think the American public is?! First off we went into Iraq, and deposed Hussein. Osama bin Laden hated Saddam Hussein and called him an "infidel." In fact, bin Laden hated Iraq so much that he is on record as calling the Iraqi people, "socialist infidels." So where is bin Laden now, dancing in the streets in Pakistan?

Then when the US had intel that bin Laden was going to escape from Afghanistan an extemely small group of Special Forces was sent to capture our supposed most wanted person. If we really wanted to get him, shouldn't we have sent every available hand?

This admin has said one thing and done another, time after time. We need change, and now.

Anonymous   May 16th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

President Bush did not address the Democratic party nor Obama. If you support someone who would sit down with the President of Iran, which whom denies the Holocaust ever occured, and has been cleary linked to the killings of Americans then Obama is your candidate. As an American citizen I just can not support that method of diplomacy.

Stupid people   May 16th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

Funny how people forget the past or say they want to not make the same mistakes twice. Yet again the American people will be stupid and follow whatever the main stream media is pumping out there. As a nation we can't get anything done because the people we elect won't stand their ground when the crap hits the fan. Right after 911 we wanted people to pay, those elected wanted people to pay – but yet nothing happened. We didn't learn from Nam. We sent in our troops without bullets to fight and try to win a war. Once again we sent in our troops without the backing and support to get it done. I served in the first Gulf War in the US Navy and proudly so. Under Clinton many things happened and he had the opportunity to end some things that could have prevented the attack on the USS Cole as well as 911 but he was to busy being "serviced" in the White House to take care of business. I am sick and tired of our men and women going abroard to take care of issues but that is what we have always done. The UN has almost control over our troops as our own government does. Anyway you want to look at the issue both sides have issues. I for one have family that served with McCain and he will do as much as he can under the congress that we have. This is not a one man show as many seem to think it is. I am a woman but no way am I voting for Clinton – heck she even changes to her Southern drawl when she goes down South. She is totally fake! For those that don't vote – you have no room to talk – if you don't take the time to due your duty to this country – then just keep your mouth shut. If you want to change things – get out there and do something. But do some research on who you are voting for – not just what the networks tell you. Look at the person's voting history!!

Bush is right - you can't sit down with Iran. It is a country that sponsors terrorists and is supplying weapons that are killing

Oh well... now what was McCain saying?

We didn't want to wait on a plan (not saying there was one). We all carry the blame and have blood on our hands. We know the problem let's stop fighting ourselves and demand solutions. I haven't seen one detailed plan from Hillary, Obama or McCain. Just politics as usual. Let's unite again like we did 9-12-01 and demand a real plan not a pointless speech. All of these canidates are in positions of power Let's tell them to shut up and get to work and let the work they accomplish do their talking for them.

Democrat for McCain   May 16th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

No, Obama, YOU are the one who has a lot to answer for:

Your unimpressive senate record
Your questionable affiliations
Your duck-and- run approach to questions from media and everyday citizens
Your inability to progress beyond empty rhetoric and state what you actually plan to do and how you will do it

Notice how Hillary responded first in defense of the entire Democratic party.

Obama cannot respond in the heat of battle. He gets upset and has to regroup and ask his advisers what he should say. He relies on speeches and scripted answers.

He wants to debate Bush? Bush isn't even running!

Obama's afraid to debate Hillary or McCain. Obama's even
afraid to be interviewed by Bill O'Reilly!

The Presidency isn't a speech-giving contest. It requires a leader
who can react in the heat of crisis and to solve problems.

Obama does not meet those requirements.

Tea Party   May 16th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Actually Noemi, 5,000 years of recorded human history have shown that peace can never be negotiated, or acheived through talking. It must be begged for by the loser.

Peace has never been the natural state of the world. The only periods of peace the modern Western World have ever enjoyed is immediately after we've had to smash an aggressor (see Germany, Italy or Japan). And the only reason those aggressors didn't rise up again, is that they were hit so hard the first time, the didn't dare raise their heads again. And thus, you have periods of peace.

The only thing aggressors (or terrorists) understand or comprehend is an aggressive display of force, power and brutality. Defend yourself by hitting them hard enough with this, and they respect you for it. Act like a wet noodle (see Bill Clinton) and aggressors come to see you as a paper tiger and weak (see basic aggressor dog pack behavior).

Futher, many people claim we had "peace" during the 1990s. Peace is not defined as the "absense of out-right formally declared war." We were hit repeatedly in the Nineties.

The difference then, is we acted like Tina Turner and said, "Hit me again, Ike! And this time, put some STANK on it!!!" And they did on 9/11. But alas, we have quickly been lulled back to sleep by Democrats who put their own political agenda ahead of national security. For shame.

Tim   May 16th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Oh Please!!!!! Obama wants to debate Bush and McCain but not Hillary. He lost to Hillary in the debate forum because he can't think without a scripted version and he wants to challenge someone else? It takes a big man to challenge a local politician and not a terrorist nation like Iran. Obama can't handle the truth and that's why he is crying today. Bush never said anything about democrats or Obama but hey if the shoe fits wear it. Amazing how quickly some forget 9/11 and want to simply play nice with those who wish us harm and some have forgotten JFK's speech about those who wish us ill and that we would answer the challenge. I'm sorry that was real men back then who were not affraid to stand up to those against this great nation.

John   May 16th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Dont deceive yourself   May 16th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

If democrats are going to vote for Mccain because of revenge, I believe you are taking away your right to judge someone else. If you are going to put your own bias over what is good for teh country at this time of distress, then you really dont deserve a good president..u do deserve MCcain and more wars to come. Clearly, Clinton might not win the nomination as it appears to be, why would I then vote against having a better economy by voting for MCcain.

You all better recognize and get over yourselves and not vote for someoen who is going to laung a 3rd war on iran when he gets into office...keep fighting wars and cutting taxes...common American people (think about it) How woudl we get money to strenghten our economy, maybe from teh profits John Mccain's wife gets, huh??

tom anderson   May 16th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

I simply cannot believe the posts I have read here, the comments by Obama and the support he has gathered. Obama talks about unity and 'rising above it' yet attempts to lump McCain in with Bush and feels justified in stating "Bush and McCain have a lot to answer for in the Iraq war." How is McCain responsible for Bush's mistakes? How is Iraq McCain's fault?

Then to read the people of America calling McCain "McSame;" Wake up Americans, that is the game Obama is playing...getting you to think McCain is the same as Bush since 70% of Americans don't like the guy therefore you'll vote for Obama.

Quit being spoon fed false hopes and ideas and start thinking for yourselves.

Go Get 'Em Barack!   May 16th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

I would love to see Bush and Obama debate in an open forum, in which the questions weren't carefully crafted so that Bush could not only give scripted answers, but could actually (hopefully) understand what was being asked. Barack kept quiet during the Democratic debates because he didn't want to enter into the pettiness that Stefanopolous (Bill Clinton's former staff member) was trying to generate. Now that the gloves are coming off, Barack is going to beat the hell out of Bush, verbally.

This time we might have a candidate that isn't afraid to mix it up. Kerry
wouldn't go after the swift boaters until it was too late. If you call these
idiots everytime they attempt to play their usual gutter politics it takes
away their whole game. The war, the economy, health care, all the issues that voters want to hear about are not where the repubs want to
go. Next thing you know we'll hear Boehner bringing up flag burning, and McConnell start his anti-gay agenda. I can see a rout in November.

Richard   May 16th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Obama is a socialist that will not completely and unwaveringly support israel. which will bring WW3. No Jewish person or lover of Israel should ever support him.. his willingness to speak with and work with Iran, syria, Hizbollah and Hamas legitimizes their bad behavior and weakens israel. I truly believe that unbeknowest to Obamaa , all that money he's getting for his campaign...a lot of it's coming from Arab nations and muslims and terroist organizations. They are very much for Obama winning, if he wins.. the US pulls out, Israel is weakened..,nothing has been taken out of context...his election helps Hamas, hizbollah, Syria and iran..period. All jewish people, and also Jewish people on the Left coast should suspend donations to his campaign until he comes out and says he will not entrat with people who'd sole goal is the destruction of Israel.

OMBUS,NYC   May 16th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

If we indeed want to protect America, Israel and all our friends in the world then we must keep all options opening including talking to the so- called enemies of ours.

Dropping bombs on our enemies isn't working and our great military suffer intolerable casualties. Why don't we try talking to the enemies, after all the cost of negotiating will be far less than military action.

We could also fight them better if we understand why they hate us. Words are mightier than the barrel of a gun.

God Bless America!!

Yo   May 16th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

This is a Blessing to Obama.
There more Bush and McCain gang up on Obama with such Rediculous Statements, the more John McCain can forget getting the votes of DieHard Clinton supporters.

LBowie   May 16th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

To all Bush and McCain supporters, please do your research. While Bush is over in Israel making us look like war mongers to world and relating Obama's stance on foreign diplomacy, he should have been giving us a history lesson about his grandfather's part in financing the Nazi party when Hitler was in power. His bank helped launder money for Nazis that financed their war. Very interesting. Look up Prescott Sheldon Bush..

Spectacles   May 16th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Make them (Bush/McCain) substantiate their claims. Make them give the American people proof this time. They have been accusing Iran of arming those in Iraq and the LA Times reports the hundreds of thousands of weapons they were going to display turned out to not be from Iran at all.

Find the truth Obama, I know you will do it and I know that you will act with diigence and good faith.

The ONE who tells it how it is   May 16th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Wow! Its amazing how all these people can be persuaded by obama with his lame speeches, cause thats all they are. He doesn't mean much of what he says...its just to get the young vote who like hearing those big long words and such "eloquent" speaking. Obama does not have a foreign policy. He would never be able to protect this country. And yeah, Obama wants to help the economy by making more government programs...hmmm...and how will he do that? He'll raise taxes through the roof to pay for all of it. I don't know about you, but im not going to give more of my hard earned money to the government. Obama is nothing but a dreamer living in a fantasy world and all of his followers are too. At this point, id rather see clinton win.

Yes, heed the warning posted earlier about Republicans posing as Democrats and posting their comments that Bush/McAin are right!
The desparate repubs are doing anythingthat they can to defend their boys, but you cannot deny the truth! Bush embarrased himself and all Americans with his ridiculous diatribe yesterday, as well as displaying partisan political campaigning as a sitting president. It's totally amazing how these mislead sheep can still believe that this presdient has done anything good for this country in almost 8 years! (McSame means "same as Bush").

Military solutions are always an option, but not to be abused as the ONLY solution- If the Iraq debacle doesn't prove this I don't know what does.

An Independent   May 16th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Bush was speaking to Israeli officials. He was dead on in talking about the past founding of Israel, its past struggles, and its future enemies. Bush did not name Obama or anyone else. He had a perfect right to talk about conflicting ways of dealing with rogue governments.

Whining demos: Obama and all the other complaining democrats are, in this instance, acting like whining little children. They must be hiding inner guilt.

I would like to debate Obama. He has talked about how he would welcome talking to any foreign govt leader. His web site talks about ridding the world of nukes. Does he want us all to sit around singing Kum Ba Ya? He talks about his previous opposition to the decision to go to war in Iraq. I was opposed too. That is history. What do we do now?

Obama is the epitome of a packaged, marketed product! I would to debate him because when his is not giving a canned speech, he bumbles and stumbles. 3 months ago I was strongly behind him. Now I know what a charlatan he is. In the year of the democrat, they are losing me.

To lol's post at 1:09, it is ridiculous to think and even more ludicrous to say that violence is the answer to solving a problem. And that's basically what you said in critizing Sen. Obama's logical and humane idea of a firm sit down.

As for Obama Supporter's "hate" post. Don't spread hate. As a country we should all be more focused on coming together. As Democrats, no matter who you're supporting individually we all want change.

Kudos to Noemi in LA: very well said.

Barack Obama holds the key to unlocking all the greatness the United States of America is capable of. Stand behind the man who is the biggest advocate for change in this race.

These Republicans keep talking about "Pre-Conditions", what are the "Pre-Conditions"? Does Mr. Bush want a full surrender or dismantling of the so called "Axis of Evil's" military before he saddles up to the bargaining table? Seriously, I want to know what these "Pre-Conditions" are. I realize they must very from Regime to Regime, but what does the Bush Regime want?

Shah Nawazm Seattle   May 16th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

If you pay attention, you will notice that Bush uses the word enemy in almost every speech. Him and many neocons rae raised with the belief that having enemies is a must for life. Our goal should be having no enemies, biblical, economic or otherwise

Yolanda/S.A. Texas   May 16th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Come on! those of you who think he wasn't talking about Obama!!!!

But I gues if you have never been in a conversation with an enemy then I guess you would not know how to negotiate for your best interest. That's what this all means..Has anyone heard the saying, keep your enemies closer??? This way you always know what's going on in their backyards.

The problem we have had through this 8 year term w/Bush is that he has destroyed any relationships we have had with foreign countries. Why do you think they're always wanting to do us harm? I would rather have a president who keeps his eyes open even if he is asleep. (Always watching and paying attention to what's going on, NO MATTER WHAT)

If your not for change and something better, why not move to one of these countries and see just how better you have it over here. The Rebublicans are for self, the Democratic Party has always (History supports this) looked out for the People.

Come on folks grow up, get educated on your history and really learn who has your back.

I can't believe the stupidity of some of the people on these blogs, especially the Obama supporters who claim that Clinton's only supporters are uneducated. Most of the Obama supporters on here can't even spell correctly or write a proper sentence!

Axl   May 16th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Apart from being completely correct on the substance in this case, Obama is a brilliant strategist. Bush's comments in the Knesset were directed at Jimmy Carter but by mentioning a Senator in his Nazi appeasement statement, Bush opened a gap for Obama wide enough to drive a semi through.

McCain's afternoon response supporting Bush tied him to the matter and his video today showing that he was for talking to Hamas before he was against it were the perfect combination for a great gift. McCain is on video. He cannot say he was misquoted.

Nothing unites Democrats more than fighting against Bush. In their fumble, Bush and McCain gave sufficient ammunition to Obama to attack them while uniting Democrats.

-McCain was for talking to Hamas, a terror group, before he was against it. Obama has never been for talking to Hamas. You can't be misquoted on video.

-Bush negotiated with Libya and North Korea, state sponsors of terrorism and WMD proliferators and sends letters to Kim Jong -Il addressing him as "Dear Mr. Chairman..." Libya killed more than a hundred Americans on Pan Am 103, including children.

-Two very senior members of Bush's cabinet, Condoleeza Rice (State) and Robert Gates (Defense) say we should engage diplomatically with Iran. Perhaps Bush should fire the appeasers in his own Cabinet who do things in his name before he goes before a foreign parliament to smear another American with Nazi paint.

Bush has insulted the intelligence of many supporters of Israel with his foreign policy and his undignified smear in front of the Knesset.

dodgey winger   May 16th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Man I thought Obama would be more interesting than that. Why is it that whenever he has a difference of opinion, he starts of with this diatribe of' 'it is shameful' or something like that 'it is sad', I mean heck all Bush was refering to was the fact that Europe had not stood up for the Jews in 1939 and there are still many people out there who believe that hardliners like Aheminijad will not do what they say. It almost seems that Obama is suggesting that it is sad that US didn't pick Obama for president for life. All that Bush has done is wrong, that is an opinion that a lot of people hold but in denouncing Hillary as much as he has it almost sounds like all that Clinton did was also wrong. I mean where does it stop and for his credentials all he offers is debates. I think over all Mr. Obama has very inflated opinion about his argument making abilities. And he might be right but the President of the United States doesn't just make arguments, he has to negotiate, cajole, push through, threaten, use force and still govern.

Chuck   May 16th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

lol:

You can have a sit down with anyone, including Iran. You can take them aside after dinner and tell them this is the way it is going to be. This is what they have to do if they want peace and don't want the US breathing down their necks. You can speak softly, firmly in a diplomatic way yet carry a big stick. The problem with Bush and McCain is that they always want to start the process threathening with the big stick without knowing what it is they will be getting themselves into, i.e. Iraq. . If you think the terrorists and the crazies in Iran or Iraq or Syria, etc. are scared of that big stick talk you know nothing about these people. They would sacrafice their own people before they would give in to the threats made by Bush and McCain. Always, always keep your enemies close and in your hip pocket, as Obama suggests, so you know what they are up to when, why and how. Then you can give them straight talk ultimatums right from the horses mouth (the President of the US) and you can act when and if necessary with approrpaite and accurate intelligence as to what they are up too.

Learn something about how to always maintain a step or two ahead of your enemies and how tro play them instead of allowing them to play you lol and you would be much better off in your comments.

Obama knows what he is doing.

Obama's total lack of international experience is fully illustrated in naive statements regarding internatioanal affairs. The absurd fact that he cited his time in school overseas as part of his international experience shows how ridiculous his claim to be "ready" really is.

It is laughable that the democratic party would all unite behind someone so gullible.

What's so wrong with wanting to practice diplomacy? The last 8 years of not doing so is what have gotten us into this awful position in the first place. Time to try something NEW... and at least seeing how talking works out doesn't lead to thousands dead. Always the best place to start. If it doesn't work, fine... we can try something new. Instead, the Bush/McSame logic has us stuck in Iraq for how long... 100 years???

Barack Obama is the steel core inside a velvet glove. His intelligence gives him the wisdom to be patient. He is not afraid to lead us to a future where the USA takes a solid role in joining the rest of the world in moving toward peace and away from atomic bombs and war and isolationism. He will not arrogantly try to dominate and force our beliefs on the rest of the world. No wonder we are currently so hated by the majority of the rest of the world. We should be ashamed that Bush has represented us for the last eight years. THAT is our biggest shame.

Currently Republicans are arrogant, warmongers. McCain/Bush is like the communist old guard in the Soviet Union and China refusing to turn over power to a younger, more positive generation of the future....who grew up on acceptance of differences and not fear of them.

This is an incredible moment in history. This is our time.
Barack Obama is not perfect, but....he is strong, intelligent, unafraid and can do the job.

GP   May 16th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

For over eight years now we've witnessed this game of semantics by Bush and company. Whether it be organizations sympathetic to Bush or members of the Bush administration, there is always a convenient escape route in the event of a firestorm over remarks or comments.

True, Bush did not use Obama's name, but it is obvious and by no means accidental, who he was talking about. And on foreign soil none the less.

The Dixie Chicks were lambasted for voicing a political opinion on foreign soil. Bush mixes domestic politics with an international event and because he didn't name anyone he didn't say or do anything wrong.

Just wearing a lapel pin or using a patriotic sounding online name does not make on a patriot. It is time for true patriots to awaken and hold those that have hijacked our nation and it's once powerful image, to account for the careless, reckless and malignant abuse of power.

Kathie, Ontario . Canada   May 16th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

If Obama wasn't so painfully transparent he would be comical.
There he stands with his newly acquired flag pin in his lapel(forced to wear because of losing voters not wearing it)
touting how patriotic he is .. How much he wants to debate
Bush (an insignificant in this race) and McCain. Tell me Mr.
Obama where was all this fire and desire to debate when Hillary
has been challenging you them? You have one lousy debate
where you feel you weren't treated fairly and you run off and hide
and refuse to debate her.. You didn't mind debating when you
and Edwards were double teaming her.
The fact that Bush was able to rattle your chain so easily and
get you all fired up just proves how inexperienced you are and
not ready to play with the big boys of international politics.

It's perfect for "you know who." I have seen God honor this when the petitioner remains obedient and allows God to handle things. Obama talks about hypocrisy, when he knows and everyone knows what he said at the time.
It is easy to look back and say-oh, I did not mean that. However, he made it very clear during the debate that he will, personally and without pre-conditions, talk and negotiate with terrorist leaders such as Chavez, Castro, etc.
So I am wondering who is the one practicing spin-hypocrisy, and he is not even the nominee yet. I can not imagine what kind and how many back paddling he will be doing if he become President.
By the way, I am an independent and I am not planning to vote for neither one of them.
As a matter of fact, the first things that they should do is reimburse the American people for all the salaries they have collected in the last 2 years without doing nothing-except for being running around lying and cheating the American people.
All of them are a disgrace!
Thanks

OBAMA, like they say is naive and inexperienced. He does not have a clue about World-wide radical islamic threat. America is not ready for Obama, no not in these dangerous times. and Obama is not ready for America. Let us not put our country through insecure times when we are already reeling under various problems – domestic and international.
America cannot afford to step back in the war on terror. There is no one good answer to handling terrorism. But Obama is not the answer. He is weak. He will set us back.
Thank You,
A concerned Indian American.

To Jim, you call Bush smart? Man, stop smokin that stuff and come down to reality. Dubya, is the worst and most feeble minded president we've ever had. Look around you einstein, is the world safer? is the economy booming? Are we better off now that eight years ago? Come down and face reality.

Refreshing, at last, to see someone who thinks rather than reaches for a gun and a contract with a political fat cat. Obama will make a fine president.

Yes. The policy of ignoring enemies doesn't work, and just serves to further aggravate tensions.

Obama's words are very strong and powerful.

Bush has no right to lecture anyone on foreign policy. In agreeing with Bush, McCain just forfeited legitimacy. McCain's continuous confusion about middle eastern groups and his G.W. style anti-diplomacy will not get us off this terrible path we're on. Only a Democrat can start to fix these republican foreign policy disasters.

So wait a minute. Since the policies of McCain caused the issues with Iran, doesn't that mean the policies of Obama caused the same? haven't they both been in congress for the past few years. Wouldn't they both have to take credit for the current situation? Oh I get get it. LadaladalaBAMA only takes credit for good things in congress and not bad. That part of congress was McCain's fault. Typical forked tongue politician. Hey Obama, why don't you go invade Pakistan like you mentioned a few months ago?

Are we getting it yet?

130 REPUBLICANS voted PRESENT on the hose bill to further fund the occupation in Iraq. Do you know what this means, of course they were cowardly, but until few days ago these guys were breathing fire out of their mouths, and yesterday they voted present.

Has the tide turned over yet?

Do you think things will be better in Iraq, after 5 years? 5 YEARS?

And some people think McCain can win?

Get the HELL OUT OF HERE, McCain is as lame as a 30 year old horse, Obama will destroy him.

I WONDER WHY ? COULD IT BE THAT THEY KNEW HE WOULD BLOW UP THE COUNTRY IF THEY DIDN'T ? JUST REMEMBER-IF OSAMA OR THE LEADERS OF HAMAS OR IRAN COULD CAST A VOTE IN OUR ELECTION WHO DO YOU THINK THEY WOULD VOTE FOR ?? EXACTLY!! WE WILL NEVER LEARN.

Never negotiate out of fear, but never fear to negotiate. Why does the GOP steadfastly refuse to talk? Maybe because they are so totaly incompetent in diplomacy that they are afraid that they'll only make matters worse. (if that's at all possible)

You've got to get out of your Oval Office chair and engage these people or they will aengage with each other and unite against us. When the sun sets on the Bush era, we'll finally have a chance to have meaningful dialogue again with other world players, whether we like them or not!

Bush is not the smartest man on earth and has messed up everything. No point talking about him.
However Obama needs to come up with concrete policies. All i hear from Obama is Im going to Change this, Im gonna Change that, Im gonna Change my Pants after tonight. However, No substance in Most things he says. Just retoric.
Obama also says he is willing for a debate anytime anywhere – but he ran away fromt he debtate when HIllary challenged him for any debate in Indiana and NC.
Finding fault with others is not enough. You have to come up with realistic solutions also – in that area both Bush and Obama are not very different.

RAPHAEL TX:

What questions is Barack avoiding? He's been one of the most forthright candidates of recent years.

Why don't you ask McCain why he advocated talking to Hamas a few years ago; the same thing he's accusing Barack of advocating (which he isn't).

Indiana Politics   May 16th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

George Bush just sealed McCain's fate with that deplorable comment. Interesting to note here is the willingness of the Bush Administration to negotiate with a terrorist and tyrant like Kim Jong il and North for years, yet they somehow have a problem dealing with Iran. In the meantime, Iran has gotten stronger while Iraq has turned into a full-scale quagmire.

Seems to me Bush and McCain really don't have a leg to stand on. Obama's lack of 'experience' may be just what the doctor ordered to restore our reputation in the world – not to mention our floundering economy.

Bob Witt   May 16th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Jim, how is Bush smart? The man mangles words on a daily basis. Every year, there is a Bushisms calendar full of new and foolish things that have come out of his mouth. To Neutral, remember, that not all women in the democratic party are white. For a dem to win the white house, they have to win all minority groups and independents. Also, are you saying that the amount of HRC supporters aren't attacking Obama because he's black?

Obama transcends race, gender, age, orientation. Obama is right. Talking it out is better than going and bombing people. If Iran wants to at least talk, then it's worth a try. Al Qaeda didn't want to talk, so they deserved like retaliation.

Dems, unite. As a woman, I don't want Roe v. Wade to be overturned. It's our right to choose, and some old man isn't going to make that decision for me. So, for all the people out there that don't want Obama, realize what you will really get if McCain is elected. It's not roses. Vote for the better of you, your children, friends.

Zoey   May 16th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

For anyone who says Obama has not been clear on his position obivously has been hiding under a rock. Go to his website or do some research on their priorities. Don't run your mouth about something you don't know about. Stop being lazy and letting the media spoon feed you. Obama is and will be a good leader.

Kris In Atlanta   May 16th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Mccain's foreign policy stance is similar to Bush's in that it is based on arrogance and aggression. We cannot continue to believe and act as if our will supercedes the needs and concerns of all other nations. This breeds resentment, and thus we have the foreign policy crises and image problem we have now. Obama understands this, and he also understands there was a time when America was respected and regarded as a world leader because we led by example and possessed a global sense of community. George Bush has changed all that and McCain has been along for the ride and this is something he must not be allowed to shirk away from. Foreign policy is about more than sending troops. It is about diplomacy and mutual respect.

Jake Jamahl, Atlanta   May 16th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Bush's vacuous word's not only violated the time honored tradition of not bringing partisan politics beyond America's shores but once again proved Bush's ignorance about history with his pathetic rhetoric.

The "the false comfort of appeasement" to Hitler was Chamberlin's signing of the Munich Agreement in 1938, conceding part of Czechoslovakia to Hitler NOT sitting down negotiating with another nation. Given Bush's erroneous comparison, Bush himself has appeased Russia, Libya and Iraq. This is a continuing display of the Bush administration using ignorant comparisons and bad history that dampens America's prestige throughout the world and Bush's own approval rating at home. Frankly, America and the world are tired of this one-trick pony.

What is even more ironic is Bush's grandfather was a director of a bank seized by the federal government because of its ties to a German industrialist who helped bankroll Adolf Hitler's rise to power according to government documents. Prescott Bush was not only a war profiteer but in 1933 went so far as to subsidize a coup attempt in order to achieve his dream of a fascist America.

Face it Georgie, America is tired of your politics, your mistakes and your presidency. When the alleged leader of the free world breaks a time honored political tradition, used bad history then ignores his own family skeletons it's time for you to ride into the sunset and order extra crayons for that presidential library.

On second though, keep talking. Every time you open your mouth, it's more votes for change, more votes for Obama...

jr   May 16th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

As an older white independent voter I find President Bush’s speech in the Knesset yesterday regarding appeasement to be in fact, right on the money. This is an issue, which in the end will cut Obama’s legs from out underneath him. We are in this situation because Jimmy Carter appeased the Ayatollahs allowing Iran to fall under their control. Every one of us whether we are republicans, democrats, or independents wants to give peace a chance However, it is important to recognize that we are not engaged in a struggle against the peoples of the Middle East we are engaged in a struggle against Radical Islamic Fundamentality ruled countries or governments. The extremists, utilizing their narrow view of Islam would rather wipe us and our way of life out then conduct fruitful straight talk with us to create a lasting universal peace in the region. If what Bush said yesterday offended some democrats then maybe, just maybe, he got it right and has outted them and their plans for our future (if it walks like a duck, etc, etc). If allowed to become the regional powers in the Middle East countries such as Iran or Syria and their henchmen Hamas, Hezbollah, anf the Taliban in Afganistan will have won a major battle in their Jihad against democracy and America. Moderate Arab nations would cease to exist as we know them today. The state of Israel and all of Europe will also be gravely threatened.

As I read numerous blogs it’s become apparent that most posters have no knowledge of history, have an extremely distorted view of it, or believe some revisionist clap trap version. It’s one thing to talk to these rogue countries through diplomatic channels as we now do. It’s another completely different thing to extrapolate that we can alter their extremist’s views if we just sit down and try to talk some sense into them face to face. We cannot make the same naïve mistake with these people that Jimmy Carter made during his presidency. If we ignore history then we are doomed to repeat it.

When countries such as Iran and Syria, and organization such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Taliban show us through their actions and deeds that they truly seek a lasting universal peace in the region, then and only then, should we consider sitting down with them face to face to discuss how to make that happen. To do otherwise, would be the gravest of errors.

Don’t get caught up in the campaign hype there’s a much bigger picture to consider.

Highly Gifted   May 16th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Does anyone realize that USA's foreign policy instigated 9/11, that before this date, newspapers around the world were calling us, the globe's bully. USA is hated around the world and viewed as murderers for power and blood-lust. Exactly, what is wrong with meeting at the round table and talking peace?

Perhaps if Americans were to evaluate their thinking on bullying and wars and why we glorify warring, then maybe we could experience a few years without blood shed and the sacrificed lives of fresh, new generations of America's kids. Aren'l all of our religious icons practioners of peace and love? It is time to change the paradigm of kill first and talk later. Personally, I abhor bullies.

The only way to fight these low life Republicans is to use their words against them. and it must be done quickly, frequently and aggressively. McCain is a 'war hero' but that was 40 years ago. In the here and now he is a cheap politician who conveniently changes positions without knowing or admitting it. Besides, he displayed on several occasions serious lapses which call his alertness into questions. Yes, his age should be an election issue even if his wife protests to the contrary.

Americans need to wake up,the onlyreason others want to hurt us is the policy we take with other countries. When you try and govern by the gun,you also die by the gun.We as Americans need to realize that we do not have the right to dictate to others how to govern, but allow ourselves to work peacefully with those who have different idioligies.

The potential for a debate on foreign policy and the Iraq war between Obama and McCain has me feeling giddy. Obama has just laid out the challenge, I hope the Republicans accept.

Mike Dallas   May 16th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Jim

You complain that it took Obama days to come up with a comment? Do you actually believe in single functioning brain cell of yours, that Bush gave that speech off the cuff???? Bush is not capable of speaking coherently, much less come up with an original thought! Please, he has been prompted for days, if not weeks, on that little gem. It was very calculated and scripted. Thankfully, the speech writer proofed it and omitted the word "nuclear".

Alan in Nashville   May 16th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Since when did being diplomatic mean being weak on security? We must stop confusing these two. It's the same as equating Iraq to 9/11. The two are not related!

Being diplomatic might have actually INCREASED our security instead of heightened the chances for another attack.

But then again, the GOP does not seem to be the best at speaking to another group with a differing point of view.

But as for Obama and the rest of us:

YES, WE CAN!

What a double standard the democrats have. They don't even see it because of their blind hatred for Bush. How sad.

TAN in London   May 16th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

For 3 1/2 years, Bush's own secretary of state has been trying to get him to understand that we have to talk with Iran because Bush's policies have made Iran the biggest winner of all in the Iraq war. For the past year, his own secretary of defense, Gates, has been urging discussions with the enemy, since the enemy is made stronger by the day by the Bush policies in Iraq. But it is the Democrats that Bush rails against, not his own experts.

There's an old Shakespeare saying that has been said by a few people on CNN the past 2 days and that is "thou shall not protest too much", which is exactly what Obama and the Dems have been doing the past 2 days. This just gives credence to what Bush said about negotiating with Hamas. Bottom line is Obama did say he would have talks with Hamas and other hateful nations/groups without preconditions. He can deflect all the negativity he wants to Bush and McCain, but he still needs to answer to what he has said about having talks with these types of groups. He and Dems know this is a sore spot for him.

Was a Bush fan   May 16th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

It takes a real man to address his enemy face to face and command respect and attention. George Bush is a cowardly boy pretending to be president in his make believe game of "I declare war" and McCain is simply an angry crony attempting to avenge his unfortunate past on any country accessible. I respect President Obama's courage and judgment to do what is best for me, and my country, unlike Lil’ Bush.

I like the sound of that, President Obama.

It amazes me that Obama believes he can and has slammed President Bush for the Presidents policies and beliefs. When President Bush disagrees with a group of people that believe it is possible to negotiate with extremist and cites historical examples of way this would not work Obama publically states the President is not playing fair. What is good for one is good for all.

In addition CNN has become so biased that this morning one newscaster reffered to the President of the United States as Mr. Bush. Am I the only one that sees both of the above mentioned practices as abuse of our system of government and unetical business practies.

It is really sad to see the state of the REP Party. They use to be so bold. They had fire in there belie. Now look at them. 28% approval, loosing 70 seats this Nov. McCain spinning around in circles trying to come up with a plan after 3 months of running against himself, crying to Rush, “what we going to do now”? Roves going to jail soon, you guys are a mess. And you have the nerve to think Bush did not know the impact of his statements in Israel? Funny thing is the more you try to make Obama look bad, the dumber and dumber you look. Notice all of the tactics you try only turn your seats over? Its because you are trying to take someone down instead of build yourself up.

You can not discuss nuclear disarmament if you can not pick up the phone and ask someone how there wife and kids are. Diplomacy is a long road, Not a quick lap around the track, It takes time to build relationships especillay if you havent had a conversation in about 30 years. Does it hurt to sit at a table and listen to someone other than yourself? Does it hurt to sit at a table and dicuss options?

The second strongest force in the world should be the US Military. The first should be the US State Department.
Perhaps then the USA will regain the moral authority that led us to prevail in Europe, Over Communism, and Yes in Irag in the early 90's.

War has not worked, period. For everyone who claims to be a real American, read the history books and tell me at what point in history the tribulations with the Middle East began in the world. From the early 1100's to modern day there has never be a lasting peace in that region despite countless wars.

It is time that someone tried something new, that instead of resorting to violence to resolve the differences between two opposing cultures, we reason and talk amongst one another. Anyone who wishes to continue the failed foreign policies, McCain, is not fit to be a president as they obviously have not learned from mistakes.

Jan from Boca Raton FL   May 16th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

McCain isn't as stupid as he looks, and I don't think Obama will

We cannot live in vacuum at all.
Who ever becomes the President of USa will have to talk to the rouge nations of the world to understand where they are coming from so that we can make adjustments to bring them back into the fold.

Robert from Washington   May 16th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

John McCain is embracing the very position that got the nation in the helluva mess it's in, and in so doing has tied himself foolishly to the failed policies of George Bush. I would remind Mr. McCain that Ronald Reagan talked to Gorbachev, Nixon to Brezhnev and in fact all presidents before Bush recognized the need to speak to the respective boogiemen of their age. Bush equates mere diplomacy with appeasement, but they are two different things. Neville Chamberlain's error was not talking to Hitler, (diplomacy) it was giving away Czechoslovakia (appeasement.) Fine nuances like that are beyond Bush's, and apparently McCain's, grasp. But I can see Obama gets it.

Obama displays strength in countering Bush and McCain at the same time. This will be a critical posture to maintain from Convention to the General Election. If he continues lump their arguments together and blend their images into one, undecided will be drawn to the strength of his campaign, and power of his message, and hear what he has to say.

This Independent votes Obama.

Thank you! Bush has spent the last 8 years damaging our once great nation in every possible way (world standing, economy, national security, etc...), and now McCain wants to spend the next 4 following the same pattern.

I love America, I thank God to be an American, but I am NOT proud of what Bush and the republican government have turned this country into. It is time for change, and whether that change comes from an Obama administration, or a Clinton administration, I will be able to again hold my head up high and be proud to be an American.

Shawna   May 16th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

McCain is such a flip flopper that I don't know where he stands on issues. He changes his stance depending on how politically successfull the position will be for his campaign. On one hand they say they are working with these rogue nations to get them under control and then on the other hand they say democrats are like Nazis sympathizer. This is not what a President does when they step onto center stage and speaks to the world. The entire World is listening, there are thousands of children dead in China's quake, 100,000 dead in burma and the country won't accept aide, even emergencies going on here at home, but instead of speaking to the disasters Bush wastes this moment speaking like the idoit he is, who ever wrote this speech is incompetent and another example of how the administration is full of incompetence. Bush's own leadership is right now working on communication with these terrorist nations, and the terrorists in Iraq to maintain a low level of truce. Bush and McCain really have no common sense and that is why his approval ratings are so low

Wonder why Bush made those comments he made yesterday? Check your gas price today for the answer.
McBush made those comments knowing it is going to stoke tension in the Middle East and as such drive the price of crude oil higher. Thus, Halliburton and his oil buddies would be able to make more profit from the high price of oil. The is the same why he sent us to war in Iraq.....
Tension in ME = Higher Crude oil Price = Record Profit for Oil Companies = Higher gas price for us her at home.

All too predictable and is what we have come to expect from the corrupt Bush/Cheney propaganda machine.

Bush's speech writer(s) need to take some history lessons. You don't compare a rag-tag 3rd world nation that can barely get spare parts, poses no threat to even its own neighbor after 8 years of a disasterous war (Iran/Iraq war) to the most powerful war machine of the early WW2 years.

It was a horrible analogy and maybe the first time a U.S. President went on foreign soil to complain about our own government.

Obama 2008

Peter   May 16th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

This shows that Obama can be tough. This is good.

Who is a more qualified leader:

a) The guy who sings "Bomb Iran", at a time when the nation is spiraling rapidly into bankruptcy while fighting an ongoing war stretching our military and our budget incredibly thin; A war with people who want to destroy us because we aim to destroy them.

OR

b) A guy who believes we may well be able to solve these problems through diplomacy, at a much lower cost in lives and dollars, quite possibly resulting in a more peaceful, cooperative middle-east.

Since our current president as well as the Republican nominee are both 100% lacking in diplomatic and leadership skills, and we've seen the results of being led by a guy from the Northeast who likes to pretend he's a Texas Cowboy, I think the answer is abundantly clear.

Kevin   May 16th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

The Democrats are such hypocrites. They claim the Republicans use scare tactics but that is exactly what this is. Obama is trying to scare uninformed voters into thinking that McCain has all of the same views as Bush. If you actually examine their positions on issues, THEY DON'T

Politically Incorrect   May 16th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

it's ridiculous, stupid and naive for McCain (the Rhinestone hero) to even align himself with any such policies of George Bush. He is the worst President in US history. Even Republicans know how bad a President he is, he should be distancing himself from Bush instead of backing him... it's almost shameful.

Barack is right to want to atleast sit down and try to be diplomatic related to our enemies, especially since bombing ppl seems to be working so well... Americans want peace.. not WAR!!!..

Besides, McCain is a liar.. he was never even tortured over there in Vietnam.. He's a traitor and a hypocrite.. And the American Ppl would be wise not to elect a traitor to office.. look up Rhinestone Hero John McCain.. know the truth about this awful man!!!

Independent for Obama   May 16th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Agreed. In the words of a great man, "There was no Al Qaeda in Iraq until we went to war with Iraq."

And frankly, it is looking like we have some serious problems in our own hemisphere since Venezuela has now been proven to have FARC ties, and is our fifth largest oil supplier.

Impeach Bush !!!

Jim   May 16th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

You may not like Mr Bush, but he is very smart. Obama had to wait two day for his speech writers to tell him what to say because he does not have a clue, and there fore obama lost two days in which he could have been talking about the economy. This is letting Hillary's case get stronger, and stronger.
So many people have been scrambling to spin Obama's naive debate gaffe early on when he said he'd talk directly to enemies. But the fact still remains, Obama had no idea what he was talking about, and he said nothing about preconditions or what he now refers to as "preparation" for such talks.
Our country will be left wounded by the Bush administration only to be led now by an unqualified amateur. But at least, it will be a democrat unqualified amateur;I guess that's something. Just pray that he doesn't refer to some world leader's wife as "sweetie."And remember The flip flopper is Barack Obama. Mr Appeasment Obama was backing the Palestinians just 18 months ago, until one of his aides reminded him of the strong Jewish vote in Florida

Travis (in the real world)   May 16th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

I watched the interview of McCain in 2006. Man oh man did he ever flip-flop. It seems that which ever is the best terms at the time for him to get elected he'll take. But he was interviewed and caught on tape, so please McSame try to wiggle out of this one.

JP   May 16th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Hah! That's it...the Dems are running against "Bush-McCain" and the Dems will win easily.

Remember how Bill Clinton brilliantly ran against "Dole-Gingrich" in 1996? People hated Gingrich and they hate Bush even more.

a REAL American   May 16th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Egotistical, are we Obama and Democrats? Nobody's name was mentioned in Bush's speech, but if you feel a guilty conscience then maybe it's because THE TRUTH HURTS!

Herman in LA   May 16th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Yep they should be Impeached...

Obama 08!!!

lol   May 16th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

obama saying he'd debate mccain on foriegn policy is laughable. clearly obama's not experienced enough to realize you can't have a sit down with iran. you think the democrats would have learned this after nancy pelosi had a visit with syria, while they were making a nuclear facility. democrats like to say it's the politics of fear, no it's the politics of reality. people want to hurt americans, quit pretending there not out there obama and pelosi.

An Agnostic Democrat   May 16th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Now, that's the kind of heat we need in our kitchen!

Truth to power. Thank you.

Oracle99   May 16th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Yes Bush and McSame have a lot to answer for but will their feet be held to the fire. In McSame's criticisim of Obama, he failed to remember the tape of him saying we should negotiate with Humas.

Crush Rush   May 16th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Go get the war mongers Obama.

Ratgurl   May 16th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

BRING ON a Dem v Repub debate!!!!! I can just see Bush stammering, trying to come up with an answer, then finally spitting out a joke (like he always does when he can't find the answer), and John McCain getting redder & redder, right before he blows his top! That would be some funny stuff, right thar!
