(CNN) - Former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said Sunday he’s interested in John McCain’s No. 2 spot.
“There's no one I would rather be on a ticket with than John McCain,” the former Arkansas governor said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
“Let me point out that all during the campaign, when I was his rival, not a running mate, there was no one who was more complimentary of him publicly and privately,” he said.
Huckabee abandoned his presidential bid after McCain clinched the Republican nomination in early March.
When Huckabee announced his candidacy in January 2007, the former Baptist pastor was best known for his dramatic weight loss. The 52-year-old governor dropped more than 100 pounds after being diagnosed with diabetes in 2003.
Huckabee went on to finish first in the Iowa caucuses January 3, placing him among the top tier of Republican hopefuls.
He lagged behind Mitt Romney and McCain in the next round of contests, in New Hampshire and Michigan, and trailed McCain in South Carolina. However, his victories in the Deep South states of Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and his native Arkansas in the February 5 Super Tuesday contests helped force Romney out of the race.
“I want to make sure you know [McCain] was my number two choice. I still wanted to win, but if I couldn't, John McCain, from always, was the guy I would've supported and have now supported,” Huckabee said.
Asked if it would help McCain if he were to be the vice president, Huckabee said that’s something only McCain can decide.
“I'm going to support him because I think he's the right person for America. I think he has the kind of seasoning and maturity that this country needs.”

Obama will have a hard time picking his running mate for various reasons.
It's Obama's record and his experience that matters to some voters, not his race, not his sex, not his running mate, not his constituency.
Those that think that McCain/Huckabee is a winning ticket are delusional. McCain MIGHT be able to pull of an upset with both moderate appeal and Hillary defectors (myself included). Neither will go for a running mate that shares the divine right of kings approach of governing morals a la Terry Schivo with the present administration. Not many of us share the rigid morality of the conservtive right, and the Republican party doesn't need that 5% even if they make more noise than the 95% that are normally rather than rabidly involved. The conservatives better wake up before they lose control as did the Southern Baptists. Now institutions of higher learning flee that affiliation for fear of being branded with the radical brush of "Intelligent" design. Every election convinces me that Alexander Hamilton was right.

Mr. Huckabee would also like to point out that when all of the other candidates wanted to not give Senator McCain a card for Valentine's Day in order to make fun of him. That he didn't go along with it.
In further remarks, Mr. Huckabee stated, "Well, like Rudy, he like totally wanted to blow Johnny off, but I said like no way dude, he's IN the Posse, but then, Mitt was so like "Just bite him in the Almond Joys!" and then like I way said, "Frak that Tuber" and then like Ron Paul is always like such a evil closet monkey in a spider hole, and he's like Consitution this and Federal Budget that and Rule of Law! After his comment about Barrack Obama getting shot, I wouldn't want him on anybody's ticket. I used to like Mr. Huckabee until this stupid, off the cuff comment that wasn't warranted. I used to give him the benefit of the doubt that he wasn't a bigot and a racist. NO LONGER!

If you want a good laugh, google "Ric Mercer talking to Americans" – when Huck was Gov he told a Canadian comedy group (posing as journalists) that he "congratulated Canada on the completion of their National Igloo." The same group "got" Geo Bush in 2000 (old Geo thought it good for Canada to "join North America") Hey maybe Huck is qualified to be a heart-beat away from the presidency, after all!
