Huckabee says he'd like to be McCain's running mate

Mike Huckabee says even when he was John McCain's rival, he was always complimentary of him.
Mike Huckabee says even when he was John McCain's rival, he was always complimentary of him.

(CNN) - Former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said Sunday he’s interested in John McCain’s No. 2 spot.

“There's no one I would rather be on a ticket with than John McCain,” the former Arkansas governor said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“Let me point out that all during the campaign, when I was his rival, not a running mate, there was no one who was more complimentary of him publicly and privately,” he said.

Huckabee abandoned his presidential bid after McCain clinched the Republican nomination in early March.

When Huckabee announced his candidacy in January 2007, the former Baptist pastor was best known for his dramatic weight loss. The 52-year-old governor dropped more than 100 pounds after being diagnosed with diabetes in 2003.

Huckabee went on to finish first in the Iowa caucuses January 3, placing him among the top tier of Republican hopefuls.

He lagged behind Mitt Romney and McCain in the next round of contests, in New Hampshire and Michigan, and trailed McCain in South Carolina. However, his victories in the Deep South states of Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and his native Arkansas in the February 5 Super Tuesday contests helped force Romney out of the race.

“I want to make sure you know [McCain] was my number two choice. I still wanted to win, but if I couldn't, John McCain, from always, was the guy I would've supported and have now supported,” Huckabee said.

Asked if it would help McCain if he were to be the vice president, Huckabee said that’s something only McCain can decide.

“I'm going to support him because I think he's the right person for America. I think he has the kind of seasoning and maturity that this country needs.”

Never fly, but then again, why would anyone in their right mind want to be McCain's VP in this election? The Republicans cannot win, even with the ineptitude of the Democratic National Committee, which seems determined to undermine their candidates at every opportunity.
    Go Hillary!

Thank you for that stupid brainless rant in ALL CAPS Mrs. Stupidity! Don't you think that if you and all your Hillarity supporters don't support Obama in November that we Obama supporters will do the same to her in 2012? You don't think ahead much do ya.. If it is perceived that he loses because of "so-called" Democrats like you not voting for him, we WILL make sure Hillary does NOT win in 2012. It's a double-edged sword so you better start thinking more than one day ahead at a time. Idiotic woman.

John McCain, please make Mike Hackabee your VP and kiss the presidency a very good bye. A good advise, make Condo Rice your VP and that will be a dream team a winning team.

I have said it and you must do it.

WHY? Because that is the only way.

McCain/Huckabee with FairTax deal will be UNSTOPPABLE in the South and might as well be the winning ticket the GOP needs now. The best show GOP can put out will be McCain/Huckabee with FairTax model.

Any other scenario will be difficult for GOP to come even close to Obama IMO

Why all this whoha about who is going to be the president and vice president. It wasdecided along time ago by the powers that be. If anyone honestly believes that Bush won the last election then they live in a fantasy land. Why all this precious money is spent on primary's that mean nothing is a shame. That money can be better spent else where in America. The election of the president in this country is a sham and we the people have let it happen. We need another Boston Tea Party. More taxes are levied on us and no candidate can change that. All our jobs have been sent to other countries and we still buy the products. We let the unions ruin our economy, hmm, maybe thats why are jobs are gone. We are sheep and we just follow along. Think real hard, who do you think big companies with deep pockets want in office?
