John McCain joked that Americans need a president who is 'very, very, very old.'

WASHINGTON (AP) – John McCain is 71 years old, and his age has provided late-night comics with some easy punch lines. On "Saturday Night Live," he joined in.

"I ask you, what should we be looking for in our next president?" McCain said. "Certainly, someone who is very, very, very old."

The certain Republican presidential nominee appeared in a phony campaign ad in which he promised to put an end to runaway government spending, claiming he had never sought money for his home state, Arizona.

"Controlling government spending isn't just about Republicans or Democrats," he said. "It's about being able to look your children in the eye. Or in my case, my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren, the youngest of whom are nearing
retirement."

"I have the courage, the wisdom, the experience and, most importantly, the oldness necessary," McCain said.

"The oldness it takes to protect America, to honor her, love her and tell her about
what cute things the cat did."

Later, during the program's "Weekend Update" segment, McCain urged Democrats not to rush to choose between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

When McCain hosted "SNL" in 2002, he performed a medley of Barbra Streisand songs. In an interview earlier Saturday, Glamour magazine asked if he would be singing again.

"I think once is enough," McCain responded.

To all you clowns who keep spouting "No country for old men", guess what? Without us old men, that's exactly what you'd now have…..NO COUNTRY!!!

jane in CA   May 18th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

Age is not a matter, Senator. The kind of experiences that we are in now is matter.

LAW   May 18th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

I am a youngster at 60, and continue to be able to outwork many men half my age. Not only that, I can work smarter.

Me, Brooklyn, NY   May 18th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Most wise people are old people.
I would choose the old and wise over the young and naive.
People, vote for a candidate who has interests of America on his mind! This is McCain!

ajd79   May 18th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

In response to David: First it is Mugabe NOT Mugabi and secondly and much more importantly Mugabe is a dictator who has taken his country from being the "bread basket of Africa" to inflation in the 1000%+ and starvation to his once prosperous people. Please stop with the melodramatic comparisons. Mugabe is not a good leader because he is old, but rather because he is corrupt and has taken his country into ruin.

Mark   May 18th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

SNL or not, I just didn't find any of his jokes funny.

Herman in LA   May 18th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

What a shame if this was Senator Clinton or Senator Obama the media would be having a field day with it to bring them down. This country is in bad shape, gas, foreclosures, high food prices, global warming, national security aka America is the most hated country in the world thanks to Bush and McCain wants to joke about his age on SNL.

Give me a break we need a president who is going to be up to the job with full force 24/7 365 days out of the year and don't flip flop and won't be hampered from illness of cancer and any other threaten diseases or causes this really concerns me. We need to move this country into the 21st century and Barack is the only candidate who can do this with out having tied to Washington Lobbyist & PAC’s Obama / Governor Kathleen Sebelius 08!!!

Patrick M. Harrison   May 18th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

what a bunch of pooheads you all are. I am 71 years old and I can out think, out work, out play any of you younger boneheads. I can't believe the stupid comments so I stopped reading halfway through. You think 71 is old and I should be walking around on a walker. I walk 11 blocks to work and back home every day and I work 8 hours a day, seven days a week and still have time for the theatre, soccer, working out in the gym and crossword puzzles, writing a movie script and going out dancing, genealogy, working in the rose garden, hiking on weekends with friends - - can your generaton say as much, your bottom in a chair before the boob tube every day.. Your lazy generation could not keep up with me and with Senator McCain.

Wise White Guy   May 18th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Guess if he thinks it is an issue than it should probably be part of a discussion during this election. I know i sure think it is an issue. The guy seems to change his positions on things from day to day and sometimes back again. Now, there are only a few explanations for this. Is he a flip flopper, whatever way the wind blows on any given day guy (he says no)? Is he a liar who like the Clintons does not seem to realize that everything said is on tape these days? Or is he losing his memory perhaps due to old age. I have seen him almost fall over on stage before just shifting weight from one leg to another. I have seen his temper go off on a hair trigger. The guy seems to have post tramatic stress disorder and i have heard him say I HATE GOOKS! He has made no secret that he thinks we should shoot first and maybe never talk to our enemies and the way to deal with them is to bomb anyone who disagrees with us. Lets see, hates asians, likes to fight, will have finger on the button…….anyone else see a problem here. I personally do not want my family to be radioactive dust. Obama 08 Please!

Caroline   May 18th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

My father is as old as this guy, and God forbid someone that age becomes President; my dad is becoming senile and decrepid too, and he unfortunately LIKES McCain because of his war vet status, and apparently no other reason, except that maybe McCain reminds him of himself.

No More Geezers in the White House!!

Rob   May 18th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Dumb, Dumb, Dumb.

He's trying to head off an issue that is not one yet; or he's trying to bait Obama into a gaff. Not sure which. But it seems stupid to me to emphasize the issue. Obama is best to ignore this issue since he is intent in focusing on it.

Edith   May 18th, 2008 5:19 pm ET

Poor thing, what a lame joke. And, he should work on his smile and his laugh, they're creapy!

Farrell, Houston, Tx   May 18th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

What a joke. McCain's children, grandchildren etc. will never go hungry with $100 million dollars. Do our children have that in common?

Matt in San Francisco   May 18th, 2008 5:05 pm ET

Greg–because Hillary said what she said about Iran you say she needs to watch what comes out of her mouth. What about your hero Obama?

He called a female reporter "sweetie"
He called his grandma a "typical white person"
He insulted voters in PA by calling them bitter and saying the cling to guns and religion and bigotry as a distraction

and you say Hillary has a problem?

Wen   May 18th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Hukabee thinks he is wise. He knows one and one quarter of McCain's legs are in the grave. He wants to be McCain's VP in the hope that when the inevitable happens, he will be the President. He forgets Americans are wise people.

Go Obama Go

Jessica, GA   May 18th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

McCain inspires me. He gives hope to a lot of young people in America. If he is President, I am hopeful that I can find any job by the time I turn 72. :(

McCain is a private person so it takes SNL to loosen him up a bit.
I do like that he has the ability to stop the media from going off tangent and keep us focused on the issues.

McShame, McBush, McLiar, Mc anything ends up the same! it is not just about age, It is about his character and personality. He is just the WRONG PERSON for the job at this time. The same old politics by the same old old and very very very old man is just wrong for this country. The economy is going down the drain, people are suffering and many will die if we do not try to resolve all the issues facing our country. Supporting McCain will surely ensure at least another four years of pain and suffering. Don't you folks feel that we really have had enough of all this misery? So why would you even think of supporting McSame??

The Democrats need to be aware of one and only one fact:

If Hillary is anywhere near the democratic ticket, it will certainly re-energize the Republican base (even though they are weak). The focus will all be on Hillary and not the front-runner.

Have the Clintons not already served this nation? Look at their record, especially the last year in office. The last year in office (recency) for any president says a lot to the voters! This is for the Dems to screw things up by sticking with Dynasty rather than "opportunity to perform." Most of us believe strongly that Obama will do just fine without the support of Hillary!

Nancy   May 18th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Actually if you think about it, McCain in the Presidency would not be all that bad.

What we really need to do is vote in an overwhelmingly Democratic congress to get things done and have the votes to override the McCain veto if it happens.

The Presidency is a figurehead, the Congress is where the work gets done!

obamacrat   May 18th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Frankfort KY.   May 18th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

I think John Mcain is a good man of strong character and a good sense of humor. I have always liked and respected him. However, I disagree with his policies (which are about 95% the same as our current president). I support Sen. Obama but would happily vote for Sen. Clinton if she were our Democratic candidate. I wonder how many of those Hillary Clinton supporters posting their intent to vote "against" Barack Obabama in the general election will really do so. I also wonder how many of those people are not Democrats at all, but just Rush fans.

Go Barak and Michelle Obama!   May 18th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

one more thing history hates to remind us..when we went all gung ho to Iraq and hunted down the diabolical Sadaam(no one will miss him) Our current administration never mentioned that yes they were liberating the Iraqi people from this monster, but that THEY (the government)WERE THE ONES WHO PUT HIM INTO POWER!!! They already knew full well that there were no WMD's there and he was the very same monster that was given the honor of keys to a certain United States city!..gotta love history!sometimes you have to wonder if the Raggedy Rev Wright isnt more in tune to the ill-will of our government than we think he is. Our government has been proven shaddy on many occasions but hey I wouldnt want to seem unpatriotic.

steveda - poconos   May 18th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Darrell…. until proven otherwise, I will continue to believe that Americans are good, decent people that look for a good future for themselves and the rest of the world.

So tell me Darrell who is worse, an intelligent man that seeks to unify the country and correct the course on economic, military and foreign affairs policies who happens to have the middle name Hussein, or someone that acts like a closed-minded bigot?

Since we are DISTACTED in the WRONG direction over in Iraq..with our military weaken..and moral is at an alltime low…why havn't they attacked us here again? History never gives us all the answers.. only the ones our government wants us to know. Chains of events have happened to get us to where we are now(people with expierience)..Clinton has a responsility because he was handed Bin Laden several times in a ruby slipper… did nothing.. Bush and his administration.. well..lets just say you can't thoroughly fight terror if you are funding the terror..look it up..and remember that it's alot more than being careful of what we ask for..its about JUST BEING MORE CARFEUL..something McCain and Bush were and are NOT!

I seriously volunteered an an elderly convalescent home for years. Seniors should be traveling, enjoying life, concentrating on their hobbies, doing a world-tour, writing a memoir, chasing their grandchildren around, taking care of their health, reaping the benefits of retirement…………..NOT running our country. McCain's distorted views on war and U.S. policy will sink our country into depression.

NO to a 3rd Bush term.

I read where people say, to read Obamas' books. It is all in his books. His drug use, his knowledge of how to be and appear like the white people want a black man to behave. His father was not a goat hearder. He was born before Selma, not because his parents were inspired. Rev. Wright was his mentor and helped formulate the books. I can see the GOP using nothing more then his own words to destroy our chance to regain the White House. What a joke Obama is. I must give him credit, he is a good snake-oil salesman. I also read the blogs of people who are supporting him merely because he is black. We will lose in november and it will not be because of the color of his skin. It will be because he is too far to the left of center.

Jim   May 18th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

If Hillary gets stripped of the nomination she deserves, then I'll vote for McCain over Obama even if he's 140 years old.

I see Obama is getting more scary about what he will talk about with terrorists. Talk about living in a dream world! I just had a visit with my nephew who was in Iraq when Saddam was brought down. The stories of his torture of innocent people would make your skin crawl and give you nightmares. Keep supporting Obama and watch all of those terrorist nations clap their hands in glee. This is not fear-mongering–this is fact. Wake up and hope you are not too late.

Your comment is awaiting moderation.
I've read other comments that say a true democrat will not vote for McCain. What do you think of the Reagan Democrats? A lot of them, myself included, could not stomach the Democrats nominee. The same thing will happen if Obama is the nominee. You want to YELL race. Never mind the fact his doesn't salute the flag. Never mind that he sat in an Anti-American church for twenty years. Never mind he would rather vote present then take a stand. Never mind his wife is as Anti-American as he is. Never mind he can say he is for change and rely on the old guard for his support. Never mind he thinks of women as "sweeties". Never mind he has some very unsavory friends. Never mind he will meet with our adversaries, unconditionally. With a lot more 'never minds' in his resume, I will write Hillary Clinton on my ballot in November.

DR   May 18th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

The next time all of you Obama supporters you cry "racism" when someone criticizes, or God forbid, challenges this empty suit you are supporting, think about all the dumb age and senility comments you are making on here and elsewhere about Sen. McCain.

I imagine many of these comments are coming from younger people, who have yet to face a real challenge in life.

The sad part about the U.S. is that we tend to throw old people away like useless trash when they get to be a certain age. In other parts of the world, especially in Asia, older citizens are treated with dignity and respect, and are revered for their experience and wisdom.

And just a little more food for thought: We are all going to get older (it is inevitable) and your day will come. Remember, one day you are going to be a senior citizen and someone is going to call you old. How do you think that is going to feel?

Anna, SW Missouri   May 18th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Clara from Wyoming—if you are really worried about Al Qaeda, then you would know that because of the Iraq war, they have been able to strengthen in Pakistan and Afganistan. They were not in Irag until Bush took us to war there. Bush has turned his back on fighting them, and has destroyed our military while doing it. Al Qaeda didn't attack us from Iraq, they attacked us from Afganistan and Pakistan. Learn your facts!

progressivedem   May 18th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

He just doesn't have the charm to joke about his age. When Reagan did it you couldn't help but love him even if it was just for that moment. When McCain does it it seems forced and fake…..

For all you kids who are so worried about age maybe you better check your boy Obama's plan for Social Secutiry where he wants you to work much longer that 65 before you can retire and he wants to raise the threshold over $102,000. Since you're all so smart and successful, in essence you'll be funding McCain's and all the old farts in their retirement. Is this a great country or what?

Anna, SW Missouri   May 18th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

This is going to be a very interesting general election. Women that want equality are going to vote for the guy that will take it away from them, and Republicans that want a REPUBLICAN President are going to vote for Obama because McCain has turn his back to them.

The fact alone that many "McCain supporters" think he's some kind of maverick shows a level of ignorance that is unfathomable. Go to his web site and look at his policies (i.e. putting Medicare/Medicaid, medical research, infrastructure growth all on haitus for 1 year while diverting it to the miliatry). This is seriously disturbing. When Clinton and Obama were on SNL, Dems had no problem laughing at their cheap shots at themselves. However, when McCain does the exact same thing, you take it literally. Obviously he is not seriously endorsing his age as a requirement for the office of Presidency. I am seriously appalled by the lack of respect people have for someone who was a POW for years, who refused to take a deal from his captors, who continues to suffer from the many injuries he incurred. As a young American, I continue to be disturbed by the lack of respect Democrats have for conservatives. I am constantly mocked at my university for my beliefs, even by professors. You would think that people who are continually preaching for equal rights, you could respect the rights of others.

"Fools rush in, where wisemen never go," a line I heard from a song. Fools has the habit of acting without thinking, the wise, always pause and look at every scenario before moving towards action.

True leadership is measured thru action not in words. Clinton and McCain had shown leadership, they took heat from it, dust off themselves then forge ahead; Obama has not shown any of that quality, he's more of an orator, a speaker than a leader. He can be a good motivational speaker, but to lead a nation such as USA? Its a BIG NO.

Clara from Wyoming : Not everyone is sitting around in their little living rooms watching wasteful television shows as you say.

AL Queda wouldn't even be in Iraq if it wasn't for us.

America will be just fine if we get real with ourselves. Maybe if you quit watching television (wow a great tribute to freedom) and did a little research (the internet is a great place to start) you would understand what is really going on in America.

Sorry to have to burst your bubble, but we shouldn't be in IRAQ at all.
By invading a sovereign country and a leader (who we put in power, gave weapons to, trained, and even provided chemical weapons to)
we showed just what HYPOCRITS we really are as a country.

And the sad part about that is, WE WERE LIED TO UNDER THE FEAR CARD.

So learn a little more before you go preaching to us about America watching television.

Look at the mess this country is in here and our rating around the world. Do we really need more old farts, with the experience, the wisdom. and they say the knowledge that we have had for how many years. I can say this, i am older than his wife. (not the one he messed around on when he came back from Vietnam) He has great wisdom, remember what he said about the USA when he was a POW?

Greg   May 18th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

TRISH - you are absolutely right on the money.

I also have studied the man for over 3 years. My daughter brought him into my light.

I have read his books, studied his history, seen where he has worked with the GOP such as Richard Lugar of Indiana etc.

I guess that is why I am so vocal to these people on here who haven't even tried to research anything.

Anyhow, not out to hurt anyone's feelings……..JUST TRYING to WAKE UP those who are sleeping.

Have a great day !!!

Clara from Wyoming   May 18th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Hey Obamarites—do you have any idea why you are able to sit in your TV rooms with a Bud watching baseball or American idol? It's because our troops are in Iraq keeping Al Qaeda pinned down and unable to launch attacks here. If Obama brings the troops home, Al Qaeda will be right behind them and you'll be watching TV in a safe room and wearing flak jackets to work. Think about this. Be careful what you ask for, you might get it.

He was hilarious.

Obama 08

Dee   May 18th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

When you are older you seemed to think you have more common sense and believe they can say what they want and everyone is suppose to listem. The senator's age scares me deeply for this reason. He does not strike me as a mellow man.
Let's see an inside story on Mc Cain's team as TIME did Obama's team and his leadership style.
I like the face Obama is listening to General Colin Powell, the man Americans swear by all the time.

Kjetil   May 18th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Can i write something that is not meant offensive: But when Kennedy that is about his age now is sick, and we know that McCain has been before we never knows what will happend in 3 month from now, a year from now etc. Offcourse that can happend too younger people also, but the chance for that McCain will get ill is much bigger that for a man/woman that are 10/20/30 years younger.

Ann Romero   May 18th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Old is not a bad thing, young people are always begging money from their older parents and asking for advice for their lack of. Wisdom is a great gift and it comes with age.

Obama is middle age an starting to understand some things, Clinton is the best of them all she has higher wisdom than all the other.

Vote for Hillary, if she doesn't win vote for McCain.

(Never mind McCain.) Edwards, as you did during the debates, ask Obama again why he voted "present" 120 times in the Illinois senate. And then tell me why you would be such a traitor and swing over to Obama right after Hillary's monumental win in WV. By the way, Edwards, you had your five minutes af fame — the last you'll ever have!

Louis   May 18th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Only in America would we disrespect our elders along with the knowledge and experience they have gained in their lifetime. I seem to remember the last time we elected a young inexperience president. His name was George W Bush. His domestic policy along with this ridiculous democratic congress has brought us all to our knees. Only in America would a campaign pressing the values of change be able to offer zero solutions but some how still be viable to the people

Regardless of who wins this years presidential election there will be dark days ahead. Do we really want to elect another young inexperience president? Especially one who is so secretive and uninspired.

If age should be an issue in this election it should be fear of the young, not discrimination of the old. For we all know what happened in Iran when their young rose up and took control of their government..

AB   May 18th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

John McCain was hilarious on SNL, and much better than when Obama appeared. Obama couldn't even poke fun at himself, just like McCain and Hillary do on a regular basis. For those who think he is too old, I just think of how much experience and knowledge he has on the way Washington works. Obama preaches "change," but seriously, our government isn't going to change just because some young, inexperienced guy thinks he can do it. McCain has a much more realistic view of the world, and has a much better chance of putting our country on the right track than someone who just recently became a politician.

It also makes me sick when people criticize McCain's age, as he's been through A LOT more physical pain and abuse than anyone who is reading this article has ever been through. After almost a decade in the Hanoi Hilton and a few melanomas, he's still as active and mentally sharp as ever. Really people, even Obama has never come close to having to overcome that much adversity.

McCain '08!!!

I don't understand why I stilll hear certain media members saying that age does not matter as if men can go against nature. The only thing I can think of is that person is young and does not feel what it mean when you are over fifty or sixty.

Yes age does matter, just ask a doctor and all the people who are over just fifty. Here are my and many others' experience: starting fifty, your mind just slows down a bit. starting sixty both your mental and physical slow down much more. the late sixty and early seventy is retirement ages.

The job of the next president is daunting given the mess Bush left behind. The job of any US president is a very stressful job fit only for a relatively young president as it needs constant focus 14 hours a day, six days a week. this job is not for some one over sixty unless this president thinks that he does not have to do anything.

Its dishonesty to take this job at this age as you know that you cannot provide such intense level of work unless you don't care about the outcome.

Sincerely,

Cecile

I agree with Jason, John McCain was great on SNL. I've only been able to vote in two presidential elections since im only 26 and have voted for the democrat both times. But I live in Michigan and due to our Governor Jennifer Granholm making this states economy seem like a depression by not doing anything and Obama pulling his name off our ballot in the Michigans primary this year I will not be voting for him. I've looked else where and love what I see in McCain so im proud to say im voting Republican in 08…

He looked very very very old in HiDef, and he sounded and looked like a lifeless, emotionless robot.

Jennifer   May 18th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Shame on you people who are treating McCain like he is ready for the nursing home or worse! And for those of you who are providing derogatory comments about his age and ability to function and make decisions, I can tell that you are either young AND immature (the two do not automatically go together as there are quite a number of very mature young people like my friends who are mature and respectful of people, regardless of age, disability, etc.) or you are stuck in the old stereotypes of senior citizens. Yes, I agree that some older people do not have the stammer to be in public office but that does not speak of everyone since there are people even in their eighties and nineties who are in excellent health and very alert and "with it". In fact, some younger people may not be able to physically endure the kind of grinding schedule that Clinton or Obama are on with their campaigns, aigning, so we have to be careful of sterotyping people based on age, or even race or sex today. Also, since people wil continue to live longer as our understanding of aging increases and technology gets more and more sophisticated, we will see changes in peoples attitudes toward seniors. This is not like the decades before where the prevaling attitudes were that people over 60 were put out to pasture and were not looked upon as really contributing members of our society. Some voters may have issues with McCain's age, Clinton's being a woman, and Obama's bi-racial background, and some of it may be reasonable, but we still need to refrain from cheap insults and respect them as individuals.

Mark   May 18th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

We were attacked during 9/11 are these not the same ones who owns OPEC? Can the war be fought using OIL? Can these people not hurt the US worse with oil prices than with Armed soldiers? McBush is so worried about Iraq that he is not even thinking about us. 4.00 per gallon gas is hurting MORE Americans than a bullet.
These people running for president needs to look at the WHOLE picture and not just small parts. Homeland Security has failed us on all levels from Natural storms to oil terror.
We need a president who will look at all issues Goverment spending is NOT the answer. 300.00 rebate checks will only put fuel in your car to goto work. This only supports the ones we are fighting. We need knowledge, and understanding, NOT free spending. MONEY caused this problem however MONEY will not solve the issue.

I remember hearing someone talking about Dr. Sumrall-saying he was too old to be on the edge minister. The fact is, that statement couldn't have been further than the truth.

Mr. McCain's mother is 94 and sharp. I would say-keep on keeping on Mr. McCain. I am for you-all the way to the White House. :)

Doug, Houston, TX   May 18th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

I think what we all need to realize is this; All politicians will lie, cheat and steal to get into office. It doesn't matter which party they are from. Both parties, historically, have had their problems. All we are going to do is try to decide which of the final two is the lesser of two evils. I admire McCain for his service, I am in the military. I don't like the thought that nothing will get fixed and my kids may have to go over to the middle east. 3 trips was enough for me. For Obama or Clinton you can make the experience argument. Neither has enough. So, More of the same? Fresh Political face? 4 more years of Billary?

After further review,Texas   May 18th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

I bet Johns first wife could tell us the real story.

Trish   May 18th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Wow…out of all the McCain, Clinton, and even the Obama supporters, I haven't seen ONE good reason why you're voting for your chosen candidate. People, we are in too dire straits to be voting for or against someone based on trivial aspects. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

I have done extensive homework, through which I've discovered Sen. Obama to be honest, consistent, and wise beyond his years, with a nuanced understanding of issues both domestic and abroad. He's shown a record of amazing bipartisan achievement both in Illinois and the U.S. Senate. He has shown a penchant for listening to detractors and making decisions based on reason and morality, not on the political winds of the particular day. While he's not perfect by any means, he is willing to admit when he's wrong and give others credit when they are right. He's tough and conciliatory at the same time.

That's a big big deal to me — not race, gender, age, pastors, jokes, flag pins, bowling, beer or whiskey. Who's gonna prevent WW III? Who's gonna bring Osama bin Laden to justice and make the world a safer place? I place my bet on Barack Obama — after doing my research, it's an amazingly easy choice.

Greg   May 18th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Colin   May 18th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Wow…does nothing please you people? Mccain went on SNL to show another side of himself and all you say is how old he is and his "failed" policies. I'm sorry. I thought we were commenting on a television show. I wonder what it takes to make fun of yourself on national t.v. You can say all you want about McCain's age, but when someone throws the race or sex card, you get pretty defensive then. At least remain consistent with your moronic statements.

Scott   May 18th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Judging from some of the comments here, the Democrats can be counted on to revive "the generation gap" from the 1960s, this time as one of the typical divide and conquer techniques from their playbook, similar to their race-based politics that work so well time and again. Let's think about this carefully instead. All things being equal, I agree it is less than desirable to have a president in their 70s. However, people are healthier at that age than ever before, and our presidents' health is monitored closely by highly qualified physicians. I doubt we will be faced with a physically unfit president in this case, but be sure to see who he picks as his vice president, keeping in mind that this VP might be a bit more likely to serve sometime in the term.

Dwight   May 18th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

McCain is a fantastic American. He served this country with dignity in Vietnam and has been a great leader in this country. I don't mind his age at all. I will vote for McCain and think he has a very good chance of winning. You have to remember there is a great silent majority of people who don't jump into the fray. They just vote and they vote republican. Take care and have a great day. Dwight

AJ, IL   May 18th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

If Dummy Darrell believes that getting revenge against Obama because the DNC penalized Florida and Michigan for breaking the rules is going to help our country he is sadly mistaken. Even Hillary has said her supporters should support the Democrat nominee!

JP   May 18th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

It is not MCCain's age so much as it is him trying to suck up to conservatives while at the same time trying to make himself look mainstream. That is what bothers me. Hillary or Obama would both bring more dignity to this country than McSame.

I loved McCain on SNL last night. I've voted democrat the last three presidential elections. I'm voting McCain this time. I feel he is a good person, who has a good feel for the issues facing this country. People who are concerned about his age, the guy has good genes. His mother is still alive and well.

I think a lot of the name calling right now is unfortunate, and I hope people are spending more time looking at the issues and the candidates than they are trying to come up with derogatory names.

And, America thinks Bush is an idiot. Yep, the bible belt and the gun belt. Is there an oxymoron here? Did Jesus pack guns too? How many gun shows did Jesus attend, and how many of his brothers did he murder? Was Jesus a conquerer of other peoples, and whom did Jesus genocide?

Did Jesus sign the constitution that guaranteed this and that while genociding double the populations of brothers and sisters than Hitler killed Jewish? Exactly, what does a flag pin on a lapel symbolize? A maniac can wear a pin. An anti-Christ can wear a pin! Duh!

steveda - poconos   May 18th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Darrell … sounds like you are looking for reasons not to vote for Obama. So you would rather vote for McCain, who will continue the same economic and militaqry policies of George W. Bush, the most disliked and least effective president in U.S. history. Hope you are doing well under these policies, cause the vast majority of Americans are not. Many are losing their homes, or have been reduced to absolutely marginal existences. BUT… if you want to spite yourself and millions of your fellow citizens to make some arbitrary, meaningless point go ahead. If your dream comes true, you will absolutely deserve the consequences… unfortunately the rest of us will be consigned to the same fate with only people like you to blame.

How ironic that Senator McCain is talking about issues that he never spoke about or supported since he was in the govt all those years todate. If he has not succeeded in changing things in Washington, how can anyone believe that he can now do it. Americans must be the most foolish and gullible people in the world if they ever believe a word he says and the nonsense that he is now uttering or regurgitating from the Democrats.

6 supreme court justices are over the age of 70. Supreme court has far more power than the president. Stevens is 88. Scalia is 72, justice kennedy is 70.

23 senators are older than McCain.

Ron Paul is older than McCain.

Colin Powell is 70.

Hello, 71 is not old anymore. McCain hikes the grand canyon every summer. He has a lot of strength having gone through what he went through.

Pelosi is McCain's age but dems are fine with that because she is a democrat. So we are going to give all three branches to the dems with huge margins in the house and senate. Is this a one party system.

Ellie in Aurora, CO   May 18th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

To Mike O'Neill - Remember when John McCain compromised on the torture issue? Remember when he sucked up to the ultra-right wing religious groups? Remember when he proposed that gas-tax holiday? Remember when he compromised all of the "maverick" straight talk to get the nominations? Remember when he flip-flopped on talking to Hamas? Remember when he said he doesn't know much about the economy? Remember when he said no timetables for getting out of Iraq, the said we would be out by 2013, with no plan to support it?

Yes, I used to like McCain and even went to hear him speak. He is not the man I thought he was!

Have been watching you this late morning and most dems. are for Hillary. Me personally can honestly say I'm not racist. I have Black friends but Hillary HAS MORE EXPERIENCE. Obama in senate putting down present and not voting, not working across party lines is a problem for me. Hillary known as working both sides is a plus. I could go on and on why she's more qualified but I will stop. And I admit Rev Wright is a problem if you think of children. It allows his children to carry on racist views and may be a problem in their later life. So, with black friends I still support her. It should go on as all states need to experience this election to not feel left out. I'm from Florida and know how it feels. So. experience and Determination along with knowledge is VERY IMPORTANT to me. She will also have a handle on how to deal with foreign countries. My vote always will be with her and my core values will never go to someone I feel is not Qualified to do the job wether he's dem. or rep. So if Obama gets the nomination I will stay home for ot won't matter who we have, thay won't be good enough for me.

Bush, your a sick sick man   May 18th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

McCain is the best the Repukes could come up with. Their party's integrity has been slowly eroding away for decades by lobbyists and they were the last ones to find out.

Vig   May 18th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

I like McCain as a person much more than superficial Obama. But I can't vote for a Republican and more years of war. So I will be sitting out the November election. Obama has become a celebrity candidate -his arrogance is a turn-off and his political resume is unimpressive. Clinton got railroaded and because of that the Democrats will have to deal with karma coming their way. McCain will probably win the Presidency.

Susan   May 18th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

The only people who think McCain's jokes are funny are old folks! No County for Old Men! McBush, go home!

Obama 08!

JJ   May 18th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

You are all a bunch of idiots…..all you do is whine whine whine whine whine about bush and mccain and the rest of the GOP, when you know NOTHING about this country other than what you get off the DAILY SHOW!!!! God Bless America, where an uneducated fool can rant and rave like they know what they are talking about, and noone puts them out of their misery!

Lance   May 18th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

As a Republican, it's refreshing to see that there's a candidate devoted to the middle and reaching across the aisle in McCain, as opposed to hiding behind strength in numbers (thank god they can't do that anymore).

However, I think the best thing for change in the Republican party would be for McCain to lose. I'm not sold on Obama. To be frank, he's told us very little. He wants change? FANTASTIC! So do I! But I want a president who knows how he plans on getting that change.

Nonetheless, I'm reserving my judgement. Obama has to prove he knows the issues inside and out. The ball is in his court in my opinion. If he proves that he can handle the job, he'll get not only my vote, but almost certainly most votes, since that's the biggest question facing him.

I really don't think we need a Senator as President. Look at Congress's approval ratings; they are low just like the Bush Administration's approval ratings. What has Congress really accomplished in the last few years? Not much. None of the Presidential candidates has been able to exercise the leadership needed to get the Senate functioning. None of the candidates has written any spectacular legislation. What makes any of us think any of the candidates will do any better in the White House? Obama is too inexperienced. McCain's economic policies and foreign policies are too much like Bush's failed policies. We need a different candidate–somebody that is not a part of the current beltway gridlock. I think we need a governor/mayor with a track record of success or a business leader with a long track record of success. The Republican Party and the Democratic Party are unable to provide candidates that meet the needs of the American people.

His age is not a joke, it is a real issue concerning the demands of the Presidency. It is not like when he was young and went to Vietnam. He has been through Hell mentally and physically, and I wonder how much stress one can take. Engineering Stress sugesst that you can only bend metal so many times before it gives. he has gone through a lot. The question of the day is in these very dificult times how many more bends can he take, and do we really want to or need to find out?

I THINK THAT JOHN MCCAIN IS STARTING TO LOOK MORE LIKE A REAL PERSON NOW THAT HE IS GETTING A LITTLE BIT OF THE LIME-LIGHT. EVEN THOUGH I AM A LIFELONG DEMOCRAT AND HAVE NEVER VOTED REPUBLICAN IN A PRESIDENTIAL RACE I SEE MCCAIN AS BEING A MUCH STRONGER CANIDATE ON SO MANY ISSUES THAT IF HILLARY CLINTON ENDS UP NOT BEING THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE I WILL EITHER WRITE HER IN OR VOTE MCCAIN IN NOVEMBER. THE MAIN RESONS ARE THAT HE IS NTOHING LIKE THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION ON SO MANY KEY ISSUES, AND I STILL KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUR BARRACK HUSSIEN OBAMA. HECK NO ONE WILL EVEN MENTION HIS MIDDLE NAME BECAUSE HE WILL SAY IT IS A SLANDER. THAT ALONG WITH THE FEW THINGS THAT WE DO KNOW ABOUT HIM, ABOUT REVEREND WRIGHT AND THINGS THAT HIS WIFE HAS SAID ALONG WITH HIM HAVING ALMOST NO EXPERIENCE AT ALL IN ANY KIND OF NATIONAL ISSUES HAS ME REALLY CONSIDERING WHEATHER HE IS A GOOD CANIDATE AT ALL. HE HAS NOT TAKEN A DECISIVE LEAD IN PLEDGE DELEGATES, AND WITHOUT SUPER DELEGATES COUNTING NEITHER HE NOR CLINTON HAVE THE TOTAL NESCESSARY TO CLINCH THE NOMINATION. SO I WOULD WAIT UNTIL AFTER FLORIDA AND MICHIGAN GET SETTLED THEN SEE ABOUT WHERE THE SUPER DELEGATES ARE GOING. I DO NOT THINK THE SUPER DELEGATE TOTALS SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE TOTAL NUMBER OF ONE DELEGATES UNTIL AFTER THEY GET THIER VOTE IN AND CANNOT CHANGE THEIR MINDS.
NOBAMA

It will become more apparent as this campaign for president continues that Mcain's time was the Election of 2000 and he lost.
Age will be a factor and nt because we want to discriminate against the seniors in our midst. It will be a factor because McCain is not in touch with the realities we face today and tomorrow.

Gosh! did he forget Cindy owns it?

About Time   May 18th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Like all the other jokes the republicans make failed attempts at….its not funny. The USA needs a forward looking leader and McCain-Bush is not it.

Hilda   May 18th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

McCain is old, old, old. I have a relative who is 69 who says(she is in good health) if he feels like she does, forgets what she does at her age, then the country is doomed. I think someone is propping him up and is always telling him what to say.

John McSame,McBush, will not win!!!!!!!!!!!!

Montana is Obama Country   May 18th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Dear John,

You and George Bush are the same politics, the same voice, the same rant, the same lobby owned, the same corporate owned and the same lame bad ideaology for America..

Go home to your insanially rich wife, whom you cheated on your first wife with and drown your loser sorrow in a few beers bought and paid for by your drug addicted, elitist wife…

This is………. NO COUNTRY for OLD MEN………..

Barack Obama is the force of change………for America……..
