Do you people not read or comprehend at all??? This is a REPUBLICAN senator from NY, so of course he's not an Obama supporter. He has more on his plate to contend with right now than suporting a presidential candidte, wouldn't you think???

David, Santa Rosa, CA   May 20th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

Oh my word! Is November gonna be great for us Dems or what? Why is it that the GOP is so hypocritical? All the talk about Christianity and God, but they are corrupt, corrupt, corrupt!

I'm not saying we Dems don't have the same challenges, but we don't preach all that thetoric while doing what we do in secret.

November will be fun, January will be a huge relief, and then we'll have to suck it up and "do" instead of "talk".

Robert Hare, a leading scientist on psychopathy, should be consulted when anyone seeks political office. In this way, we can weed out the thugs. But they would run anyway; they have no shame. And thats' a fact.

Do not get played for a fool by the republicans.

Most of the democratic 'infighting' consists of republican plants posing as democrats.

the so-called 'moral' majority,is finding out they're no better than anyone else.funny thing is they never were better than anyone else, they just thought their membership in establishment religion gave them power to wield, politically and socially.bush and republicans won the 2000 election with a promise of restoring morality to the white house, after bill clinton's impeachment trial.they have since had one after another,of sex-capades,that shows the hidden 'immorality', that hypocritic republicans try to make an issue.mccain has his own problems with morals, ethics and spreading falsehoods.obama appears to be morally sound.

Mike - Texas   May 20th, 2008 11:52 am ET

.

I think that it is funny how a republican makes the news when something like this happens and if a democrat does the exact same thing, it is just another day at the office.

The democratic morality bar is set sooooo loooow.

oil rules   May 20th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Funny thing is...it is easy to take shots and rightly so, but at least the Republicans campaign on and actually have some morals. Where is the morality in killing millions of unborn children every year? Would be easy if I could 'choose' and just kill all my problems when they arise. Problem is that they are only fair game inside the womb....

Martha   May 20th, 2008 11:41 am ET

fairandstraight   May 20th, 2008 11:14 am ET

Oh no, not a conservative!!! That is where all the prefection lies in this country. People should resign when they start being dishonest, not when they get caught.

Randy - Denver   May 20th, 2008 11:13 am ET

It is sad to see another, possibly good (I am not a resident of NY and so cannot speak on the value this man has given the state), person destroyed by a bunch of bible thumping rednecks! It is ironic that he ran on the family values platform and now must pay the price for forcing his definition of "morality" down our throats. I guess it is Karma that those who preach intolerance fall because of the intolerance they preached.

Me I am a humanist I think as long as you do not harm than you should be allowed to do what you want. I believe that punishing someone because of their personal life is wrong, punishing someone before they commit any actual harm is wrong (stalker laws, seatbelt laws, drug laws, speed limits, drunk driving laws etc). If they actually hurt some one than punish them but if they make it home, no accident than there was no crime. It is called Freedom folks it is a TOUGH thing to live with but well worth it.

Those who will trade security for freedom deserve neither. Ben Franklin

Anna, SW Missouri   May 20th, 2008 11:05 am ET

It kind of reminds me of Gingrich pushing for Bill Clinton's impeachment only to find that he had cheated on his own wife. Clinton stayed in office and Gingrich had to leave. Don't get me wrong, I thought that Clinton should have left also, but the Republicans and their "family values" seem to think it only applies to the Democrats.

Women for Obama   May 20th, 2008 11:05 am ET

We forget that these people are human...just like ministers, rabbis, educators, CEOs, etc. They do things that are "wrong", but it doesn't mean they are "bad" people. I'm not judging the senator. I truly hope the entire situation works together for the good of all...especially the children. All of his children, including his daughter outside of his marriage, deserve that.

Joann   May 20th, 2008 11:03 am ET

PatrickTM   May 20th, 2008 10:44 am ET

I'm saddened by this for his children especially, and for his spouse and his mistress. But, given the moral high ground the Republicans are always claiming, and their efforts to control the personal life of others by allowing religious doma and sanctimonious efforst at legislating all morality, it is nice to once again see a hypocrite be exposed and go down to pubic exposure.

My prayer is coming true all this so called Republican conservatives (False Christians) are getting exposed one by one we will see more of them exposed in the near future. This people have been twisting God's word to score cheap political points for years, now God is responding to their sins I say Amen to that.

RESIGN NOW. At least Spitzer knew when the game was up. When it is over, you RESIGN. Hillary, take note: RESIGN.

Terry from El Paso   May 20th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Another Republican bites the dust due to a moral issue. At least this man is only involved with adults.

No matter how many times this happens, Conservatives see the culprit as somehow an exception to the rule that they are the exemplars of proper behavior for the nation. It is necessary to point out the obvious:

1. Most humans, especially most men, are simply not monogamous. Your husband has probably had an occasional 'experience' with another woman – or perhaps with another man. Maybe you know about it; maybe you don't. This includes Republicans. Men are true to their natures.

2. It is not the sexual adventures of Conservative and fundamentalist leaders that is interesting. That, actually, is none of my business and it is none of yours. What is interesting is the hypocrisy: that a Conservative will decry and condemn from the podium and from the pulpit behaviors that they themselves have engaged in and that they intend to engage in again.

3. I'd rather have a president or a senator who sleeps around (male or female, gay or straight) and who will work on the nation's problems than a faithful husband or wife who is in the pocket of corporate lobbyists.

Jan From Boca Raton, Fl   May 20th, 2008 9:44 am ET

Eric Abbiss   May 20th, 2008 9:37 am ET

...and another one gone, and another one gone, another one bites the dust! Good riddance!

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   May 20th, 2008 9:36 am ET

I thought that is was the Democrats that were stereotypically not able to keep their pants on while the Republicans couldn't keep their hands out of the money jar. I guess times are changing. Everybody is being caught doing everything.

I can't understand why someone would do this. If you run on being a "family values" person, just be sure that you define what those are and stick to them.

Cammi317   May 20th, 2008 9:31 am ET

As if he stood a chance....LOL.

There goes another seat to the democrats. The repubicans are in horrible shape for this year.

If McCain picked Abraham Lincoln to be his vp I doubt he could help.

They deserve it tho, they claim to be the party of small government but they spent more money than the democrats under George W.

A New York congressman who admitted to fathering a child out of wedlock with a woman who bailed him out of jail on a drunk driving charge this month announced Monday that he will not run for re-election.

Wow. I didn't know you fit so many bad things into a single sentence.
1) Fathering a child out of wedlock.
2) Getting bailed out of jail.
3) Drunk driving.
4) GOP congressman (I know, it's not in the sentence, but it's in the title).

Th real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments
posted in a courthouse is this:

You cannot post "Thou Shalt Not Steal," "Thou Shalt Not
Commit Adultery," and "Thou Shall Not Lie" in a building
full of lawyers, judges and politicians...
It creates a hostile work environment.

Hillary Clinton   May 20th, 2008 9:19 am ET

Do you imagine if something like this happened to Sen. Obama, it would hurt his chances in November?

Rudy NYC   May 20th, 2008 9:16 am ET

This congressman ran on a family values platform. I salute his decision not to seek re-election, and mend his family. I wonder at how many of the voters in his district want him to run again, although there have been many, many calls for his immediate resignation from his constituents.

I wish someone would conduct a poll.
