Gov. Richardson endorsed Sen. Obama in March.

NEW YORK (CNN) – Former presidential rival turned supporter Bill Richardson will campaign this week for Barack Obama in Puerto Rico, 10 days before the Commonwealth holds its Democratic primary, a Richardson aide tells CNN.

Richardson, the governor of New Mexico and former Cabinet official, is one of the most prominent Hispanic politicians in the nation. He sought the Democratic presidential nomination, but dropped out of the race after a poor showing in the New Hampshire primary.

While Richardson served in President Bill Clinton’s Cabinet, he chose to endorse Obama over Hillary Clinton in late March. Hillary Clinton has performed better than Obama with Hispanic voters, although the latest Gallup tracking poll suggests that the Illinois senator has erased his disadvantage with that key voting bloc.

Richardson will visit the Commonwealth on Thursday.

Fifty-five pledged delegates are at stake June 1 when Puerto Rico Democrats head to the polls.

CNN will have exclusive poll data from the Puerto Rico primary.

Cool! I'm glad to hear Richardson will go to Puerto Rico! That's AWESOME and I think it will prove REALLY helpful to Obama!!!

SLO Bear   May 20th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

Perhaps we could trade in West Virginia or Kentucky's statehood and give it to Puerto Rico.

Sukie in Oregon   May 20th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

I wouldn't want Richardson to campaign for me as dog catcher.

This guy betrayed Hillary Clinton. Obama shouldn't count on him to help with anything.

I used to like Richardson, but no more. I hope he doesn't get the vice president spot with Obama.

I am writing in Hillary in November. I don't change my mind.

Why is no one talking about Clinton disenfranchising voters with her "I'm ahead in the popular vote" arguement? She is discounting caucus states and all of those voters!!!! I'm glad to count Florida and Michigan, but this argument of hers is hypocritical!

Good on the Governor!

Why will CNN not give Senator Obama his due?

HE IS AHEAD…HAS BEEN AHEAD….AND WILL STAY AHEAD

Yet, CNN plays up Clinton's wins in states that do not matter, are bigoted in demeanor, and should not surprise anyone with their voting pattern. No one wants to point this out, of course, because the network wants Clinton to win.

What a shame you are backing a lost cause.

Mike, Atlanta GA   May 20th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

So what about that Edwards endorsement LOL

FYI - This black man that voted for Hillary (in Atlanta) will NOT vote for OBAMA. Even though I am a Democrat, it does not make me less of one if i choose to be an AMERICAN first and vote on issues.

If Hillay does not win the Democratic nom, to appease all of you Obama supporters who resort to name calling cause I am doing what I believe is the right thing, I will pull out of the Democratic convention and register as an Independent and vote McCain.

Unlike most of you, I have been a Democrat all of my life and not just "for the first time in my life." I follow the issues.

I also find Donna Brazille to be disingenuous. As a Superdelegate of her caliber, she should go ahead and declare her endorsement of Obama (which we know she supports) and stop patronizing Hillary.

bizbiz   May 20th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

Hispanics won't listen to Richardson. The majority of Hispanics want Clinton as the next President and his endorsement of Barack Obama shows he is out of touch with the very people he supposedly claims to understand and repesent. Richardson is a joke.

Obama supporters please stop being rude. Before you get on my case, I am an Obama supporter as well and very disappointed in these results. However being rude, calling the people of Kentucky backwards or racist will not help matters. It is what it is. For whatever reason Kentucky prefers HRC to Obama. Acutally it seems they prefer anyone to Obama. What we have to do is focus on the future, if indeed Obama is the nominee, we have a problem on our hands and lots of work to do. Should HRC become the nominee then we get to decide if we vote for her as in vote for the democratic party, or we can even do as HRC supporters said they will do that is vote for McCain.

Ric Richardson is such a liar & cheater. I am not saying because he worked in Clinton administrator but because he is supporting Obama because it would be favorable for him if he is president. that;s why he made decision at the last time, Obama supporters are you deaf, Hillary is saying she would support nominee no matter what happens, ask Obama to say same thing. His supporter & african american so head strong, they say it would disfranchise african american if he is not the nominee, so imature & idiotic is it not.

Eric   May 20th, 2008 7:46 pm ET

You can see the difference between obama voters and clinton voters. Obama voters are more educated hence exit polls show a great majority would vote for Hilary knowing the consequences of the GOP and 4 more years of bush. Whereas Hilary has less educated voters who do not understand the consequences of voting for McCain when they scream I will not vote Obama. Keep in mind when you say that, if you think gas prices are high now, just wait till the mideast says we have another cowboy in the U.S in McCain, why should we help them by producing more oil. Not to mention spending another 50 billion a year on war for the next 5-100 more years in iraq. Bush's Gas plan is to go beg for oil, is this the best we can do? Thats sickening.

Carrie - with your comment in mind, never wonder why even the strongest democrats who are voting for Hillary would vote for McCain or no one if Hillary doesn't run. It's people like you with comments like that that are dividing the party and it seems that most of Obama's supporters are like you. By your attitude, it sounds like you're a bit too young to be voting at all.

McCain Repeatedly Voted Against Minimum Wage Increases
2006

McCain Voted Against An Amendment To Raise The Minimum Wage. McCain voted against an amendment to raise the minimum wage to $7.25 per hour in three steps. According to the Bureau Of Labor Statistics, 62.4% of all minimum wage earners were women in 2006. [1]

McCain hasn't even hit the 100,000 vote mark. That's just amazing……ohhh yeah, Hillary won Kentucky, right? I almost forgot, LOL!!!

And tell Gov. Richardson that I'll meet him at the party over there….na'h, I'm just playing, LOL!!!

GoldenChica   May 20th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

Mr. Richardson don't waste your time campaigning for Obama. Puerto Ricans can see that he is not the best candidate to be the president and they will let you know that when they cast their votes just like West Virginia voters and Kentucky voters did today and the rest of the big states. Obama can only win votes in caucuses.

David Self   May 20th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

James Carville hit it on the head when he referred to richardson as a Judas. Didn't Hillary win New Mexico? And, didn't Richardson say the Super Delegates should vote the way their state/district goes? Of course he did. Did anyone out there think richardson sounded very bright during the early debates? VP? We had better make sure Obama is well guarded!!

rbasquez   May 20th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

Richardson is such a fake. He is a spastic, when he went for Obama, (the antichrist) 1/2 of the Latin voters were disgusted. We love Hillary.

Some posters on here sounds about 5yrs old, talking about if Obama win, they are voting MCcain. Wow! RACE PLAYS A HUGE PART IN COMMENTS LIKE THAT. THE ONLY REASON WHY HILLARY WON OHIO AND TEXAS IS "THE REPUBS HELPED HER". How can Hillary run the country when her campaign is in debt, and plays the gender role when ever she lost a state. Have Obama every say he lost states because he was a black man??? heck No!!

Eddie p.   May 20th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

Stay home Richardson. In the end ! all the campaigning in the world is not going to help Barak Obama win the nomination. Too many of us Democrats out here going to vote for McCain if Obama is nominated. He does not have the experience , and he is a racist. Furthermore!!! he made a statement that the GOP had better be careful if the are going to attack Michelle. He put her in the public eye, and she's no different than any othe spouse on the campaign trail . If you can't stand the heat . Get out of the kitchen. What exactly does Obama mean by saying anyone attacking his darling had better be careful? what will he do? Maybe borrow nucs from Iran and fire them at anyone attacking Michelle. Hillary has taken plenty of hits, and she's still standing, Bill has taken plenty and all of this is O.K. Stop your crying Obama. No sympathy here.

Fred   May 20th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

Donald from SC   May 20th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

Sukie in Oregon,

I love how people like you complain about super-delegates like Gov. Richardson who change their support to Senator Obama. Just a couple of months ago, you were the same people screaming that the supers could change sides if they choose to do so. Yet, when the supers change in the direction you did not expect you call them betrayers.

News: Many former Senator Clinton supporters (super-delegates) have switched to support Senator Obama. Zero, zilch, none, nada super-delegates have switched from Senator Obama to support Senator Clinton. What does that tell you about the candidate?

Whatever happened to winning on his own merits?

Tyler in Raleigh, NC   May 20th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Clinton lost her "sway" with Hispanics as soon as she told us we were not "hard-working Americans".

The comment was taken as white vs black, but what has been forgotten by the media and by the Clinton camp is how HISPANICS helped Clinton in FL, CA, NM, TX and other states and how she has not once mentioned Hispanic issues or thanked them since she was doing needing them. She used the Hispanic vote and tossed them away for the "white, blue-collar vote" as soon as it was in her best interest.

Watch out, those Americans in OH, PA, WV and VA will learn the Clinton way soon enough as soon as the campaign is done using you.

She cheated her running mates by going to MI and FL and that did not work so well. She can run with Rush Limbaugh in the next election.

(claim of popular vote not good in all 50 states, excluding any state's voters who held caucuses, because she didn't win those, so those should't count, but including florida and michigan because they help this incredible claim.. void where prohibited…

NEVEROBAMA   May 20th, 2008 7:56 pm ET

RICHARDSON IS A TRADER

I don't care what they say Obama will not win Puerto Rico even with Richardson on the stump for him. Latinos vote Hillary!!!!

Wake up America

Hillary all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!

squeezer   May 20th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

…no offense Barack.

Salida   May 20th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

Carrie, Carrie, Carrie, being jealous should not be part of your reason to support your candidate. I know, a strong woman always scares the weaker ones. How do I know? I'm a strong, educated, confident, 30 something woman who supports Hillary not because she is a woman but because she is a Woman AND a qualified, confident, strong, educated and knowledgable person. Go and make something of your life. No matter what happens, Clinton has accomplished what many people, not only women, will not accomplish over their live time.

merits only   May 20th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

All the support he has gotten from the DNC, democrats, the media, celebrities, famous rich families- and he still had NO MANDATE.

How sad for this left wing puppet destined to fail in NOV.

Should have ;let the voters decide. Even now, the big shots should stay out of it. The more unfair the deck is stacked in Obama's favor- the less likely the HRC supporters are to back him in Nov.

Obama 08   May 20th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

Sukie Chill out a little

carrie   May 20th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

YES! Send Judas Escariot to Perto Rico. They have been planning this all along. First it was Edwards news of supporting him after a lost and then Richardson again after a loss. Clinton will never win the nomination because it has been decided already.

I am tired of watching this whole parade. And CNN keep supporting only one candidate because it is obvious! I am still undecided here.

Pat in Cali   May 20th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

All the haters who say they're not voting for Obama or writing in Clinton deserve a Bush 3rd term.

When you lose your house, your job, your child to war, your health car, your social security because you threw away your vote, you can blame yourself. You know you voted for Bush's 2nd term, so you're already getting what you deserve.

Anonymous   May 20th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

you are stupid

D R   May 20th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

Bill Clinton helped put Puerto Rico's governing officials in office, so I think Hillary has the inside on this one.

Mike in Minneapolis   May 20th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

I think I know why Hillary is scrambling to be the nominee: It is much more difficult to prosecute a president than it is the ordinary citizen. RE: Paul vs Clinton in the state of California. Plus the fact that she can put those "lost" papers behind her that were found in the white house library after missing for two years. No telling what else you would find if you looked. The Clintons have a true legacy of cheating, lying, and Potomac two stepping behind them. Be very care when dealing with them. And how about that parlay of $1000.00 into $99,000.00 plus in under a year in the stock market. Something really smells there, and I'm not talkin' about astronomical luck.

scarr   May 20th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

i wonder if obama or any presidential candidate will ever try to be bi or tri lingual ?

besides that, go obama, the world needs "new frontiers"

Latino from Sacramento   May 20th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

To all,

Please do NOT think that all hispanics are like this guy. We rejected him already, which is whay he dropped out. who does he think he is going to fool?

maryann   May 20th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

So what, I feel this guy is nothing but a backstabbing rat.

carrie   May 20th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

YES! Send Judas Escariot to Perto Rico. They have been planning this all along. First it was Edwards news of supporting him after a big loss and then Richardson again after another big loss. Clinton will never win the nomination because it has been decided already.

Griff   May 20th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

One thing I have found out the most… Make comment's and Praise the Idiot Obama…..OK…… OK….l Ok… Praise Hillary Clinton??? But you can't do that… She's just a Woman…. Since when did Black's appreciate their Women….. Say's CNN… Every time I compliment Hillary… CNN decide to disregard my comment…. Maybe I embarras too many Black's….????????????????

DWC   May 20th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

I have no respect for Gov. Richardson. If he couldn't support Clinton publicly, he should have just kept quiet. His endorsement didn't gain Obama a lot, if anything, it cost him as a lot of people saw Richardson's endorsement as just a stab in the back to the Clintons. A lot of people still see loyalty as an important character trait, and Richardson obviously is lacking in that department.

Fernando in ATL   May 20th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

As a Hispanic, I have to say that Richardson does NOT represent me or the Hispanics I know. As a Secretary of Energy, he did NOTHING. If he had done his job, we would not suffering the energy crisis we have here in the US….

dunno yet   May 20th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

Game Over   May 20th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

Hillary Clinton still leads among those who love cats. I don't know why her campaign is not making more of this…leave the fuzzy math out of it and focus on the portion of the electorate that loves cats. In my opinion that is a much better argument than the one currently being made by those fools Terry McAuliffe and the "new Wolfie" Wolfson. The new wolfie should be jumping on this… I mean, even their backwoods idiots aren't falling for their garbage math argument since, well, its bogus.

doug   May 20th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

now here's someone who might think he is someone. but it just goes to show you how Obama is going to run the White house. this guy richardson talk's to terrorist like hugo chavaz. and doesn't even support who won his state. he is nothing and nobody, just trying to suck up so he can get back into the white house. you all know who hugo chavaz is, he is the same guy who hates america and owns citgo gas company. and is linked to suppling arms to Iran to kill our troops in iraq. and yet nobody questions why billy boy is talking to him. i can see we learned nothing from 9/11. we are back in the same frame of mind that we were in before 9/11. and what did that kind of thinking get us.

Nia - AZ by way of MN   May 20th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

Any idiot who is willing to cut off thier nose inspite of thier face by voting for McCain even though the claim to be a dem is lame. On what planet does that make any since?! You all are to selfish and self obsorbed to look at the big picture. I can't imagine wanted to spend another four years of our nation going down the tubes with McSame…are you kidding me?!! Probably a republican anyway!

Hillary 08   May 20th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Richardsons a loser. No Se Puede`

always the puppet   May 20th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

The democrats are running scared.

Their shoe in is anything but…

What else can they do to ensure he'll win? They have cheated, fixed the election, thrown out votes for HRC, they have accepted caucus wins as equal to primary wins, they have ordered all the superdelegates to his side.

But… THE PEOPLE don't want him. Not even the lifelong democrats can vote for this demagogue.

Raghu   May 20th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

PREDICTION FROM CLINTON NES NETWORK~!!!::

THE 10 E.V of W.V and Kentucky will hand McCain the white House

Ron   May 20th, 2008 8:01 pm ET

I'm tired seeing Hillary driving hate into the election, and dividing the Democratic party. The chicken superdelegate won't step in and help Hillary out of the election and back to New York.

Go Obama / Edwards 08
