Obama: Cuba policy to be based on 'libertad'

Sen. Obama attended a Cuban Independence Day event in Miami Friday.
Sen. Obama attended a Cuban Independence Day event in Miami Friday.

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) - Sen. Barack Obama told Florida's Cuban American community Friday that his Cuba policy would be based on "libertad" and freedom for the island nation's people.

"The road to freedom for all Cubans must begin with justice for Cuba's political prisoners, the right of free speech, a free press, freedom of assembly, and it must lead to elections that are free and fair," Obama said. "That is my commitment."

"I won't stand for this injustice; you will not stand for this injustice, and together we will stand up for freedom in Cuba. That will be my commitment as president of the United States of America," the front-runner in the Democratic presidential race said during an address in to a Cuban American group in Miami, Florida.

Obama also said the policy for Cuba and the rest of Latin America would be guided by "the simple principle that what's good for the people of the Americas, is good for the United States."

Senator Obama is WRONG. All we need is another 50 years of economic embargos and political issolation; and Cuba will fall! What Senator Obama does not understand is that 45 years is NOT enough time for an economic embargo to work. Give it some mote time Senator Obama. It's going to work any day now.

I have four important questions for Bush, McCain and the GOP!

    1. Is Iran stronger or weaker since Bush’s invasions of Iraq?

    2. Has Osama bin Laden been killed or captured since Bush’s invasion of Iraq?

    3. Are we paying less for gas now or before Bush’s invasion of Iraq?

    4. Is our economy better of now or before Bush’s invasion of Iraq?

If you answer these questions truthfully, is there any way you want to continue down the same foreign policy blunders of the last seven years?

This is a not a difficult question, most 3rd graders could answer this one.

This is so typical and stupid of McCain and the GOP. The USSR had political prisoners, China had political prisoners. Guess what we talk to them directly this is why nothing gets done in Washington. Give me a break, they must think the American people are so stupid that all they have to do is cry wolf and we will run scared every the time. Cuba, we have had the same policy for the last 58 years and nothing has changed! So is working GOP is working McCain? Come on GOP people you are making me vomit every time you guys open your mouth!

Again his policy makes sense once oyu take the emotional baggage that comes with talking aobut Cuba and set it aside. I think I finally have figured out why people do not support Mr. Obama, they cannot divorce their feelings from their intelligence. It is not that they are stupid it is just that they cannot see outside of themselves. I suspect that younger Cubans may surprise the Republicans this election, not enough to radically change the voting patterns in south Florida but enough to make a visible blip on the radar of those who pour over the results. Fianlly I can ask this question, for all my life (that i can recall) Cuba has been under an embargo from the US, and yet they are still surviving maybe it is time for us to rethink how we are dealing with them after all it worked with the Chinese (at least to some extent) and we had no real ties with them, there are many ties between the US and Cuba so it could only work out better.

Obama "I won't stand for this injustice." What is he going to do? Invade like the Bush Administration did in Iraq. Senator Obama could not even help his small Chicago district with proverty, gangs, drugs, crime, etc. Everything he says is just more political pandering. He needs to go back to Chicago and complete the job he was suppose to do 12 years ago.

  13. 58 old white ladies for OBAMA

SINCE OUR PAST 50 YEAR POLICY HAS WORKED SO WELL,

THEN THE CUBAN PEOPLE JUST LIKE OPPRESSION?

THESE IDIOTS HAVE BEEN JUST AS COMPLICIT IN THE

OPPRESSION OF CUBAN CITIZENS. WE HAVE HAD DIPLOMATIC

RELATIONS WITH RUSSIA , EVEN AFTER THEY THREATENED

US WITH NUCLEAR ERADICATION. THIS IS ANOTHER FORM

OF OUR CRAP POLITICS. WE HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN THAT

    ISOLATIONIST POLICIES ONLY STRENGTHENS TOTALITARIAN

STATES & STRENGTHENS THEIR HOLD ON THEIR PEOPLE.

I hope that this means that we can finally recognize Cuba (as we have China and Viet Nam) and begin to build some kind of relations with this country. The Cuban people have suffered long enough!!

If only this guy had a clue about anything.

The DNC should have coached their puppet better and should have informed him of what his owm positions are.

That way we would now be spared all his flip-flops and misspeaks.

This candidate is the wrong choice. We are not socialists- but democrats.

Obama's ideology is Marx-based, and yet he wants to deceive us by talking to Cuba about libertad (freedom).

Obama is the only candidate whose campaign rhetoric just plain does NOT match his voting record. And yet the press is studiously avoiding pointing any hard facts that may damage the reputation and character of their darling.

Senator Obama, you are not offering us hope – you are just offering hype and hypocrisy!

    Libertad-
That is when true democrats vote for the best candidate in Nov.

Write in Hillary Clinton- do not settle for the worst choice just because he is the one the DNC installed as our nominee.

    Libertad!!!!
