Mrs. McCain released her 2006 tax returns Friday.
Mrs. McCain released her 2006 tax returns Friday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Cindy McCain released part of her 2006 tax returns Friday. The filings show she earned a total income of $6 million, and paid more than $1.7 million in taxes. She also claimed deductions of close to $570,000.

Her husband John McCain's presidential campaign said she had received an extension on her 2007 tax returns, and planned to release those as well. Her husband, presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, made his own returns public last month.

Under a prenuptial agreement, the couple keeps their tax returns and assets completely separate. Cindy McCain is heiress to a liquor fortune.

A campaign spokesman said she still had concerns about the privacy of her children - the reason she had given earlier for not releasing the records - she did not want the lingering questions continue to be a distraction from other issues.

The campaign dismissed questions over its decision to release the documents late on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. "The campaign makes determinations when the make things public," spokesman Tucker Bounds told CNN. "This is something that came together today. We feel very good about that fact that people are able to get the information that they had asked for."

A campaign aide says that Cindy McCain made the decision recently, but this was the first time the campaign had had a chance to release the documents.

He added that the moves will exceed those of Teresa Heinz Kerry, also an heiress, when her husband John Kerry was the Democratic presidential nominee in 2004. Heinz Kerry made one year of returns public, but withheld some portions of the filing, and did not release the information until the final months of the campaign.

What was that deduction she listed for hiring a hillary supporter to off Obama??

Hillary trying to subtly offer to one of her supporters the motivation to KILL another candidate. This campaign is getting sick.

WE NEED CHANGE AND A MAN OF INTEGRITY MCCAIN or OBAMA
Save the USA from another whacky Bush in the Whitehouse

Conservative and Proud   May 23rd, 2008 10:26 pm ET

Let's spout out rhetoric on how she's elite and stuff! Even though it's none of our business how much this person (who's in no leadership position) makes per year! Yeah! That'll win people to our side! Oh man, I'm gonna guess she's hiding something or really makes more. This is definitely our business!

Grow up you children.

vicki   May 23rd, 2008 10:25 pm ET

Why did we have to see her returns???? Someone thinks she didn't pay her taxes or she is secretly funding terrorists through some investment. I absolutely do not think the spouses of candidates need to have the world look at their finances. Either Bill Clinton's or Cindy McCain's. It just gives nosey people something to talk about and complain about and get jealous over or envious over.

I absolutely feel that people who ask to see these returns from spouses need to get a life!

Get real people   May 23rd, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Tell me if I'm wrong but wouldn't anyone who is complaining about what she paid in taxes want to switch places with her if they had the chance? Let's also not forget this is family money, she did not go out and make it all on her own.

In this country everyone has the right to succeed the best they can; some just do it better than others; this is what seperates the United States from a lot of other countries.

And the last thing I have to say about all of this is get over it. I have to be honest, I'm more concerned about $4 a gallon gas then about Cindy McCain's tax returns! This election should be about what these politicians are going to do for us, not what they've done for themselves.

kathy linberg   May 23rd, 2008 10:23 pm ET

My only hope is that people like Mrs.McCain give as much to charity as us little people do. Doubt that happens-–

I think that Cindy McCain has shown us how to be a first lady. SHe is regal, elegant and extremely professional. I do not believe she should have to release her returns and would have liked Obama to have said so if he is such the proponenet of NEW politics. Obama has said that his wife is off limits ... he should shut her up then as well ... and so should Cindy. For that matter Bill.

But if they speak up and comment on other candidates as Michelle and Bill have done then let the press at them. But Cindy has been quiet and only speaks of her husband. Kudos to her.

Richard   May 23rd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

No one mentions how John McCain divorced his first wife even after she waited for him to come home from Vietnam.. Cindy and John McCain and liars and i pray they dont get in the white house.

Alphonse Moneau   May 23rd, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Whoever thinks that Cindy McCain and/or John McCain represent(s) in any way the hard-working American better thinks twice! They know none of the hardship hard-working Americans go through; they have no idea how much hard-working Americans worry about making the ends meet. John McCain if elected president,..., party time for the rich and millinnaires! Keep John McCain out of the White House for the sake of the hard-working Americains!

Kevin   May 23rd, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Who cares about tax returns???? Why is it the "in" thing to do now for the politicians? I didn't care about Obama's, Hillary's or McCain's. As far as people commenting on Cindy paying a low percentage of taxes, a lot of that is due to muni bonds. Wealthy people lend money to local governments to build roads, bridges, sewer systems, etc. If you take that away from the rich the government will have to pay more for funding which means your taxes are going up. Be careful what you wish for...

How does a woman with a $100 million fortune and income of $6 million a year, and DEDUCTIONS of $570,000 NOT get the ELITIST tag ?

Obama grew up poor, single mom, and achieves the American dream by going to an Ivy league school an working his way through to eventually become an advocate for less fortunate people and a Professor of Constitutional law. That's not elitist, that's good old fashioned American ingenuity and elbow grease. How do people have the nerve to put him down, if he didn't make it, they would put him down for that too. I wonder if Cindy McCain worked for her money ??? Oooops, that's right she INHERITED $100 million. Nothing wrong with tons of money, but don't patronize and Bu** Sh** the American people. We've had enough of that the last 7 years.

The irony I hope is not lost on the American people. Draft dodgers, and silverspoon suckers and cronys Bush and Cheney are elitist. I wonder how much money Bush willl all of a siudden make after he's out of office, and I wonder if that income will come from the US oil industry and the Saudi's.

Obama better speak up to refute these allegations because they are being tossed by a desperate, deceiptful and fear mongering Republicans. Thankfully there are a handful Republicans that can be honest and see and acknowledge the damage inflicted by those two losers (Bush/Cheney). How many days until January 20, 2009 ?

chisom   May 23rd, 2008 9:48 pm ET

Guilty concience!! Who asked her for tax returns, EVen in her return, there was no single amount given to charity, or something like that, She should better stay off, after all, What has Obama's presidency got to do with Cindy McCain's tax.

Go Barak and Michelle Obama!   May 23rd, 2008 9:45 pm ET

I'm getting really sick of the nasty way Michelle is being depicted in opposition to Cindy McCain.. they are BOTH beautiful women.. but that is irrelevent when it comes to being First Lady!!! Last week it was the nappy headed comment concerning Michelle! "Gentlemen", black women may not be your personal preferences concerning the beautyof black women..but get this straight SHE IS NOT UGLY.. and i hate to sound like alot of broken records.. but thats purely racist in all contexts(especially the nappyheaded comment)..

Laura Marie   May 23rd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

The McCains are CLUELESS about the lives of average, every day Americans. You can tell this while listening to him speak. In his comments about health care and more. Six million dollars? Good for her. She will never have to worry about health insurance. People who make this much money (they are NOT the only politicians) can NOT know what it is like for the more typical American suffering in today's economy. They can't possibly!

To Ben from Redwood City, CA who said "If everyone, regardless of income paid say 15 – 20%, that would be fair..."

That still results in some people having to pay more in taxes than others–how is that "fair?" People with more income don't get better government than anyone else–why should they have to pay more for it?

Old Artillery Man   May 23rd, 2008 9:24 pm ET

Being an elitist does not necessarily mean to have money. It is the belief that some people are inherently superior to others and deserve preferential treatment, or higher rewards because of their inherent superiority.

It is what us old, white, working people without a college education mean when we say “Looking down your nose.”

This is the way that so many Obama supports look at us but still will expect us to vote for Obama in the general election. I have even read posts that say we should not even be allowed to vote. Could there be a greater demonstration of an elitist than this?

Hillary Clinton is disgusting. She has hit lows that I could never have imagined..... Get her out of this race......Now

fred   May 23rd, 2008 9:18 pm ET

There is no reason she should have had to release these. She won't be on the ballot.

To all you Obama supporters who think you are the "educated voters" Let me remind you that a huge portion of these "educated voters" are actually college students, who could care less about healthcare, tax reform, social security, the economy, etc. They just like a young guy with good speeches.

I'll hear so many teenagers around my area who love Obama. But if I ask them what his views are, they have no idea. I don't think most of Obama supporters know what his views are. It's sad how they will vote for a guy just because he makes some CNN proclaimed "historical speeches."

It's sad.

I see no earthly reason why the public has to know how much money Mrs. McCain has, how much she makes, how much she inherited, what she does with it or anything else. Get a life. We are electing her husband, John McCain, not her. I do not care if she has a zillion dollars or is broke. It will not make one ounce of difference in my daily life.

I don't care how much any of the candidates paid in income taxes, as long as they didn't cheat on their returns. If you want to audit McCain's tax returns for the last 40 years, fine, but then I'd like to know how the Clintons were able to get away with such large deductions for donating old clothes – and underwaer – to charity. And I'd like a transcript of every conversation Obama ever had with anyone about racism and socialism.

Interesting that she would release these the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Everybody's headed out of town, nobody will make much mention of this. Same with her husband's medical records. Millions of people will miss this news. It was strategic that they chose this day for the release of this information. YA THINK??!!
BTW, 1.7 million on 6 million in income seems like too little. I want her tax bracket.

indo45   May 23rd, 2008 8:48 pm ET

bruce   May 23rd, 2008 8:48 pm ET

You are all idiots. She needs the prenup based on her ties to the distributorship her family owns. AS a part owner, that is the smartest thing she could do, and her family doesn't manufacture liquor, they are a company that DISTRIBUTES it. Big Difference. The Clinton Family is worht a lot more that the Mclains. THEY are worth over a $100 million together. John's wife is potentially worth $100's of millions when she gets her portion of the business. Her wealth was never in the marriage picture.

How many dollars did Cindy save with the GOP tax cuts?

Michael from Boston   May 23rd, 2008 8:43 pm ET

Wow, if you are a tax person and you factor in all that deductions, she's paying about 17% in taxes. The rich will continue to be richer and the poor poorer. It will always be like that.

Let's see her contributions to charity and to what groups?

parker   May 23rd, 2008 8:42 pm ET

Absolutely his health should be of concern. Of course his doctors are going to report he is 'healthy' and that is wonderful. But he is 72. There is no way that a 72 year old can handle the toughest job in the world. Forget Reagan, he napped, he was able to delegate everything, and he was in anomaly. He may have also had early stages of Alzheimers for a year or two before leaving office. We can't afford to take that chance with McCain, that he gets dementia or A.D. and the Republicans and McCain's handlers cover it up, which they would. He is simply too old, he looks it, he sounds it, and I don't believe the doctors. His credibility is already questionable and he hasn't been in office one day.

Tf   May 23rd, 2008 8:42 pm ET

Since she's 15 years younger then John, maybe she will need to run the office if he's elected when his mind starts to wonder. Just like Regan.

The McCains have skeletons in their cupboard. They are hypocrites.

McCain means insanity. McCain means super flip-flopper. Why?

(i) He waited until the Friday of Memorial weekend to release his medical record. He hopes the holiday period will somehow puts things out of sight. But as it turns out, he is mistaken. We have now come to know, he has something to hide. He has skeleton in his cupboard.

(ii) Cindy McCain who said she will never release her taxes, eventually turned around to release her 2006 taxes. When? It happens on Friday afternoon of Memorial weekend. McCain’s wife does have something to hide. They have skeletons in their cupboard.

(iii) He courted and got the endorsement of evangelical preachers like John Hagee and Rod Parsley for political reasons. Now, he turns around to reject them saying, he did not know they said the things the media tell us they said in the past. Is this how he plans to run this country as president? Calling somebody else’s views naïve.

McCain is at best a hypocrite and a flip-flopper.

As an Obama supporter–I appreciate this release of information, I think the circumstances called for it, and I am satisfied with how they carried it out. It was bugging me that she was holding it back when McCain was basically living off of her wealth, but now that it's out there, I feel better about this issue.

Doesn't mean I'll vote for McCain by any stretch, but I respect how they handled this in the end.

I don't understand the hostility from commenters on both sides. Nothing to be hostile about, now.

It is disgusting. I don't care if you do not post this comment. I care that you (Editor) read it.

Gary   May 23rd, 2008 8:16 pm ET

This obviously doesn't include any foreign investments. I'm an Obama supporter, which means I should be rattling Clinton's cage. At least her and Bill made theirs public. I wonder why it took the McCains so long?

Moe, NY   May 23rd, 2008 8:16 pm ET

First: R. Brown...chill out...Hillary never ever would do what you are suggesting...get a grip! Second: McCains' money, as is true of the other canidates, is his/her own money and...let's face it America...no money...no Presidential run...sad, but true story. In my opinion, people are reaching hysterical level....sit back and breathe people. This election should be won by popular vote, especially not delegates...who in the hell decided that a handful of people should call an election...DAH! Third: McCain...scares me....too pro war, just an extention of Bush and all his failed policies. Ok, had my say...which is more than I will receive in trying to elect a President of the United States....seeing that I am a Democrat. As much as I totally despise the Republicans, I must admit that their road to the primaries is ever so much better....winner take all, as it should be!

Dr.Kothary , Blaine, WA 98230   May 23rd, 2008 8:16 pm ET

Democrats '08

Different Mike   May 23rd, 2008 6:09 pm ET

Are most liberal college educated Democrats this stupid or just the one's on this blog?????
"What about the 100 million"? "She made a 100 million"? "She only paid 28%" " I pay 35%"? I wish some of you "smart" college students would actually pay attention to those liberal college professors who are supposed to be teaching you something (like to read). She MADE 6 million, she is WORTH 100 million. You only pay income tax on the money once you dopes not year after year after year on the same money. For those of you who have ever itemized a tax return once the IRS figured in charitable contributions and tax exempt items she paid a 28% tax, she started out at probably 46% before that and may I say a much higher rate than you will ever pay. COLLEGE it's not just for smart people.

Janey   May 23rd, 2008 6:09 pm ET

All you Obama people will be paying way higher taxes under YOUR FAVORITE LEFT WING SOCIALIST. Better get ready to pay for all the people who do not care to work.

Ellie   May 23rd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Let's get this straight: Mccain & his wife are millions, The Clintons are millions. Yet Obama is supposed to be considered an elitist. Please. Wake up America!

Money sure buys some things . . .   May 23rd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

I agree with those who say that Cindy McCain dresses much better than Michele Obama, but has anyone considered the fact that Cindy's budget for clothing is probably astronomical.

I heart OBAMA   May 23rd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

WOW - it must be nice to be a heiress - I mean you get special treatment and extensions and everything.

Les Newell   May 23rd, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Everyone can have money..there is money everywhere. It is only when you are willing to have it, does he appear. There are some that are better than others acquiring it. She got the same way we all can. Why put down her, that only puts yourself down and money will never flow your way because you are not happy for her. It is called The Universal Law and the Law of Attraction. I applaud her for having the ability to bring weath to herself. Change your thought and you will change you life.

Ralph V. AZ   May 23rd, 2008 5:56 pm ET

What they should be releasing is her criminal record for getting busted stealing drugs.

I thing that would be a little more interesting!

Mark, B'ham., Al.   May 23rd, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Cindy McCain must not have the shifty lawyers and accountants that John Kerry's wife does. Heinz made 5 million dollars in '04 and paid just 175 thousand dollars in taxes. Cindy made 6 million dollars and 1.7 million dollars in taxes. I guess elitest democrats can raise Americans' taxes since their lawyers and accontants can find all the loopholes their party has put in the tax system over the decades to let them keep more of their money.

Liars   May 23rd, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Wow! How ridiculous! We know this is a lie. She made much more than 6 and we also know that it isn't all from the Liquor business.
Lies, Lies and more Lies! When will we ever have a candidate who is genuine ? Oh, We do!! Thank the good Lord we have Barack Obama!

pavel   May 23rd, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Yes We can

but McCan't

Franky   May 23rd, 2008 5:51 pm ET

I'm not gonna lie guys but I pretty much don't care how much they make, to tell you the truth. If they are ballers and make money, all I'm going to say to them is....."So, business is good, huh?" You see, I'm not critical of them if they have money, I mean, it is their money...

Plus, I think my boy Honest Abe sums it up when he says this......"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power"......

Just be who you are........

mya   May 23rd, 2008 5:51 pm ET

I don't care about Cindy McCain's tax returns, just don't care (i don't care about her either!!)

Marcus B   May 23rd, 2008 5:50 pm ET

She is the President of one of the largest beer distribution companies in the US and she expects us to believe she made 6 million dollars???? How dumb do the McCain's think the American people are? I think those medical records that John McCain released are doctored and these tax returns of Cindy's are not only a year and almost 2 months late, they're a joke!!!

TheTruthHurts   May 23rd, 2008 5:50 pm ET

2006 doesn't matter. We need the returns for when he started running for president. However, I do appreciate this initial effort. I personally don't care other than I hate hypocracy and if we can rule that out, it will be a good thing.

Ed   May 23rd, 2008 5:43 pm ET

So Sen. Obama is the least wealthy candidate. The Clintons and McCains are multi-millionares yet Sen. Obama is considered the Elitist. Give me a break

Ron-CA   May 23rd, 2008 5:42 pm ET

You moan and groan when McCain doesn't report something and then you whine like a baby when he does. Can't have it both ways. By the way where is Obama's medical history???

A liquor heiress, what next?

James, SC   May 23rd, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Yup! This is real transparency alright. Aren’t the American voters tired of being called idiots? Anyone swallowing this nonsense is truly stupid. What happened to years 2000 ~ 2005 taxes? I love this straight talk express going around the curves.

Bill   May 23rd, 2008 5:38 pm ET

You all are such experts on what she earned or should have earned. You should work for the IRS as auditors. She really doesn't owe anyone the disclosure she has made. Some of you see a scam behind every tree. Must be a terribly unhappy, empty way to go through life.

Ben from Redwood City, CA   May 23rd, 2008 5:36 pm ET

To those who think she paid a lot in taxes because just because 1.7 million is a large number – most people making under 100k a year pay more. She paid less than 1/3. This is why we need a flat tax system. If everyone, regardless of income paid say 15 – 20%, that
would be fair and the government would be taking in plenty of money.
All of that said, I'm sure there are many people far wealthier than her who pay even less than 28% of their income in taxes. We need tax reform!

pam Eugene OR   May 23rd, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Smart girl with the pre-nup Cindy. I can't believe everyone on here is criticizing her for making money. Phonies- our society worships money but everyone on this blog hates it right??

She's has never ran for public office! It is none of anyones business how much money she makes- especially since she files seperate returns from my friend John.

Shon   May 23rd, 2008 5:25 pm ET

$6 million in on year? How in the world could John McCain fix his mouth to call Barack Obama an elitist...and out of touch? John McCain is such a phony.

Steve   May 23rd, 2008 5:18 pm ET

I am so sick and tired of the "If not Hillary, then McCain" people. If you are truly Hillary supporters you would not vote for McCain in the General election. Hillary and McCain are very far apart on their views. Hillary and Obama are not. Please, let's not have another four years of Bush policies.

karen   May 23rd, 2008 5:18 pm ET

I am sooo tired of all these "special" people in the White House! I want someone who really worked! Maybe does her/his own laundry. Possibly put themselves through school. SOMEONE who really can relate to us–the real American person!!!

dbacchus   May 23rd, 2008 5:18 pm ET

Now look carefully at "If not Hillary, then Mccain" idiot. He/she usually PRETENDS to be an upset Democrat, Hillary supporter. In reality though, it's a Republican McShame supporter. What other person would ask for Ted Kennedy's tax returns right now?! This person has no shame....

American Patriot   May 23rd, 2008 5:17 pm ET

None of you pay as little tax as she does and you never will, because your not rich.

A prenup hu, so she does not trust Johnny McBush not to divorce her and try to take her money.

What trust and love, NOT.

These people are crooks and depend on the little guy to pay all the tax.

They have the guits to want to be your boss,go figure.

You all had a chance to vote for Ron Paul, his voting record is 10 times better than any candidate and has been givin awards for it.

You all had a chance to voye for him and eliminate the IRS.

Now you will deal with the wrath of the TTC and The North American Union and the New World Order.

Youtube the 600 FEMA Concentration camps now buildt around the U.S. They are buildt to hold Americans in Labor camps.

Go see for yourself.

This country has ended as you know it.

You all had a chance to stop it yet you voted for who is popular on FOX and CNN.

Now the country is going to pay a price.

YOU ALL FAILED

money talks   May 23rd, 2008 5:17 pm ET

Yes, Darth Vadik – there's a funny thing about the rich in this country. The rich hire better accountants, who in turn finds more tax shelters, hence the rich pay less percentages of taxes. Doesn't that just s*ck for the rest of us? Maybe that's why she was so adamant not to release her returns initially.

UKO   May 23rd, 2008 5:17 pm ET

That is how the rich cheat and rule over the poor.
She pays only 28% taxes.
I hope the IRS are looking at this.
It is insufficient and the American public will not accept that from somebody that wants to be the first Lady.

$570,000 in itemized deductions... really, let us see the breakdown

dd L.B,CA   May 23rd, 2008 5:12 pm ET

Sounds suspicious, first she was not going to release them at all, now just comes out with them. Everthing I heard was she was worth maybe even as much as 100 mil, as heiress of the beer distbr. I am sure somebody will stay on it, to make sure there is not another set of books & we are looking at the ones "for show."

Good, she released her returns   May 23rd, 2008 5:12 pm ET

It's good to see her releasing tax returns, she paid her debt. Now why can;t Obama release all his senate years tax returns, he just released 1 year tax returns & pleased idiotic people with his rhetoric, why is he afraid to release all his senate years returns.

He funded his wife's hospital with large sums, why is he afraid to release details of funds. After his large sums of funds, she received promotion & spike in her salary. See all his empty eloquent words don't matters, because he is just oppurtunist & intimidated to solve america's problem when he was in senate.

Larry   May 23rd, 2008 5:06 pm ET

Good for her.

Kim J   May 23rd, 2008 5:06 pm ET

Darth, if you are paying 35% in taxes you need a new accountant. Maybe it just seems like you pay that much. More likely you pay about 20-22%. Much of Mrs. McCain's income is likely from capital gains from investments and the maximum tax bracket for that is 28%.

I think the question you should have asked is: "How many people on the blogg pay $1.7 million in taxes."

jonny   May 23rd, 2008 5:05 pm ET

Didn't she say she would NEVER release any of her tax returns? And if she changed her mind, why only release 2 pages? The point of releasing tax returns is to see where all the income comes from and goes to. Releasing only a part of her tax returns still makes her look suspicious...maybe even more suspicious than if she didn't release them at all.

kaye   May 23rd, 2008 5:04 pm ET

She didn't file with her husband and shouldn't have to prove anything to you idiots in the media.

Wolfe and Jack should release their returns and their health records.

What in the heck is SLO Bear talking about???

That is like saying this story just goes to prove the McCain's racism.

Actually, Cindy McCain having 6 million dollars a year in income puts the McCains in much more "elite" company.

Perhaps SLO Bear is 71 years old like McCain and is begining to get a bit senile. Or, SLO Bear is just an idiot.

I don' give a fat rat's behind about John McCain other than respect for him as another human being and a war veteran. In an attempt to rechannel my immediate discontentment with her tax returns, I will give her credit for supporting her husband in the face of the nightmare that is those cherished extremist evangelical preacher/Gods. I'm sure she thought this would defray some of the possible damage their little words of hate might cause him. Now that I feel better, I will resume ignoring and dismissing the republican party.

David   May 23rd, 2008 4:59 pm ET

It is wrong to this trend of rejecting men of God. God's word is giving, they may not be acceptable into the eyes of men but it needs the wisdom of God to understand it.
God used the king of Syria to punish the jews in the Bible.
I think there is real wisdom in what thw pastor said about Hitler.

Allan   May 23rd, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Funny how there was no announcement that she was going to do this. Or, apparently, whether we're going to get any returns from prior years.

I guess we should consider ourselves lucky to know this much.

Darth.....Go back to school and learn how taxes are calculated – you pay taxes on adjusted gross, not total income. i.e. if she has long term captial gains they're taxed at a lower rate.

At least she didn't try and deduct her underwear.......or maybe in Hillary's case, her pantsuits.

Darth Vadik, CA,

Do you know how to do the math? Do you know that taxes are paid after itemized deductions have been subtracted? Do you even have a clue or basic understanding when it comes to taxes?

Apparently you don't – you are one blinded Obama supporter. Don't worry – if you think $35% is bad, with Obama in charge you'll be paying 53%.

People are suggesting that Obama offer Hillary a position in the Supreme Court. I hope he doesn't so that she can face the music that she's trying so hard to escape, that's why she's fighting to the end deceiving the naive public into thinking that all her luggage is on the table..YEAH RIGHT!!
She needs to be in power to escape and postpone her date with retribution. The way she tried to smear Obama when she & her husband are exponentially more dirty.

Belle   May 23rd, 2008 4:53 pm ET

Does it mean YOU OBAMA supporters might have a different OPINION about the Clintons? They did NOT have to pay 33% in taxes....they chose to.

About the Role as VP. Don't YOU realize this is just politics to Obama and Clinton?

OBAMA is the one who fed the seeds of "she is not to be trusted, she is running a campaign of fear, a war mongerer, untruthful...etc." Of course, that is NOT negative campaigning...right? Just politics.

Clinton brought up issues that Obama would have CERTAINLY lost the presidency in, if they occurred in November.

As far as lies goes....Obama certainly has had his whoppers....
Saying Wright was never his spiritual advisor, when there is documented articles "earlier" saying he was.
Saying he was never in church and heard divisive comments, otherwise he would have left the church. Then 2 days later saying he had heard the comments.
Selma
Lobbyist Money
Nuclear Legislation
Law Professor
Life Magazine
Obama's Fluency in Indonesian
Rezko saying he raised $50K...then 250K
Campaigning on the Senate Floor (Illegal..by the way)
NAFTA

Oh...what about those 1999 allegations by Sinclair that he did drugs and had an affair with Obama?

Oh...and who's campaign divulged the divorce scandals of his competitors, do you suppose, so Obama wound up as the only one running?

Politics...Chicago Style.

Beckie Sue in Montana   May 23rd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

That's interesting. I'm more concerned with why Hillary would make the awful comments that she made earlier today. Every site is talking about it except for CNN.

Mike   May 23rd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

She didn't pay 28% taxes. The report indicates she had a TOTAL income of $6m. That's very different from earned income. Deductions haven't been factored into that number. Being in the 35% tax bracket, her gross earned income after deductions would be about $5m based on those numbers. $1m (about 17% of her income) in deductions isn't very far fetched.

And on that note, Obama 08

Tobias   May 23rd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

This story is a complete fabrication. It will never happen we will take our fight to the convention and Hillary Clinton will be our nominee.

Chi4Obama   May 23rd, 2008 4:46 pm ET

And they call Obama an elitist?

JamesAAMale   May 23rd, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Here here, teddy and kerry and heinze and obamas healthcare records and his fbi files should be made public

dan davenport   May 23rd, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Something just doesn't seem on the "up & up" here with this Barbie Doll wife of McCain, theres something below the surface that really makes me uneasy. I fear this couple greatly. I pray that Obama wins.

Will in Richmond, VA   May 23rd, 2008 4:45 pm ET

28% huh...
Well, I guess she didn't find all the tax shelters. Her accountant should be fired. Refunds for the rich for the win!

Veterans for Obama   May 23rd, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Tax break for the wealthy......no wonder her husband wants to make them permanent.

Carl   May 23rd, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Darth Vadik and to others...

Federal taxes is one thing... state and local taxes are another ball of wax.

It's already been calculated that an Obama presidency and his tax plans would cost people in California and NY and NJ around 60% of their ANNUAL SALARY due to state and federal taxes. These lovely taxes include the taxes you pay in gas, food, your home, electricity, beer, capital gains, and just about anything else...

on top of the 30% or more Obama wants to take from you.

Thank goodness I live in Texas where we are not that stupid. We have no state income tax for a good reason, so people can take care of themselves and their family first.

Chi4Obama   May 23rd, 2008 4:42 pm ET

$6M in earnings, and only $1.7M in taxes paid (i.e. $28.3% tax rate).
Is there something wrong with this picture?

If not, then I want her accountants working for me!

Montana is Obama Country   May 23rd, 2008 4:41 pm ET

You can't tell me Ole Johnny boy doesn't benefit in more ways then he reports or lets on when she shows income of 6 mill....

Johnny really knows how to shake his money-maker eh...?

.........ELITIST........ ELISTIST FAMILY...........

Jed in Texas   May 23rd, 2008 4:40 pm ET

You will never see the money in her offshore accounts.People with that much money always have multiple hiding spots. Her handlers knew they would have show and tell sooner or later.

NickNas   May 23rd, 2008 4:39 pm ET

She filed the extension in order to hide what she has given McSame until after the election.

carmen   May 23rd, 2008 4:39 pm ET

The income of the McCains and the Clintons are just like the ordinary, uneducated white people they too profess to be.

fred   May 23rd, 2008 4:38 pm ET

Go Hillary...Good for Mrs. McCain!!

AB   May 23rd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

So she's rich. Get over it.

OBAMA-08!

Henry Miller, Cary, NC   May 23rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

$1.7 million in taxes... Now, what exactly does Cindy McCain get from the idiot government that's worth 1.7 million dollars? Does she get roads forty times better than the roads I get? Did her kids go to schools forty times better than the schools my kids go to?

What a rip-off!

AZM   May 23rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

So much for the rich not paying taxes... 1.7 Million... Dang!

Of course I'd like to just have what she paid... LOL...

KiloWhiskey   May 23rd, 2008 4:31 pm ET

What?? She paid $1.6M in taxes? She'll never be a successful politician like Clinton at that rate! Remember the large Goodwill deductions for donations to charity – for his underwear?

Good on ya Cindy!

Carlotta in California   May 23rd, 2008 4:30 pm ET

28% taxes paid. Now, can we move on?

Amber   May 23rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Good for her! I'm a Democrat so I could care less, but its nice to see a successful woman no matter what color they are (red or blue).

Terrence (Winston Salem, NC)   May 23rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Am I the only one who thinks this report is FULL OF "something"?

Don in Seattle   May 23rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Who cares! We all know she is worth millions and millions and that all people this rich work the tax saystem to their benefit. I wouldn't believe anything that is being shared as we will only see little bits and pieces. Gee, what does this prenup thing say about the relationship of McCain and his wife? Probably, "What's mine is mine and what's yours is mine!" Does anyone really believe she only earned 6 million in 2006? Some people are more stupid that they appear.

Great Timing   May 23rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

It's a great time to release taxes–a Friday, a long holiday weekend, she's not stupid.

Obama 08

Chris   May 23rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

so what's with all the McCain ads claiming Obama to be a "multi-millionaire" and "out of touch" when he and his wife make way more than Obama and have been doing so for at least a decade? (and living in DC – a place clearly representative of how the rest of the US lives)

George   May 23rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Why on Friday afternoon before long weekend?

Barbie McCain   May 23rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Why? I thought Barbie didn't want to share her taxes.

It doesn't matter, they're not going to win. The White House is a step down for her–she really would rather stay home anyway.

obama - supporter - arkansas   May 23rd, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Jody Monroe   May 23rd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

What does that have to do with McCain and his presidential bid? Irrelevant.

Sharon Minnesota   May 23rd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

That's a lot of money, I wonder how much she spends on botox.

Adam, Los Angeles   May 23rd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Cherry-picking information to release is hardly a breakthrough. Let's see the last 6 years in full.

bukky   May 23rd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

1) why is this the shortest blurb EVER
2) didnt she say she would never?
3) does this mean shes a liar?
4)everone else released from 2000 on... why is she special?

Moderates unite   May 23rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

And this is relative because...?

Is Cindy McCain on the ballot?

Are we going to start demanding to see the tax returns of all the candidates' third cousins?

The decline of this country is directly attributed to the idiots who think stuff like this is somehow important to them....those with an agenda

The Lunatic Fringe has never had so much say in our government than they do now....MODERATES UNITE AND TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK!

David Goldman for OBAMA   May 23rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

YEA HIS JUST ONE OF US.

Gerald F.   May 23rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

If she is a daughter to a wealthy father as they say and income from the 'familt' business.............Is that really important at this time to be a news item? Considering it is already a known fact?

Patricia   May 23rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Percentagewise, most middle income families pay more in taxes than that. Why is that?

Obama Supporter   May 23rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

It might be nice to know WHERE the money came from.

Eric   May 23rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

I think Cindy McCain would make an excellent First Lady. She is goregeous!

Billy from Florida   May 23rd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

What a great first lady she would make, all america could be
proud.

Can you imagine Michelle Obama as first lady?? My God NO.

If not Hillary, then Mccain   May 23rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Great new she paid her fare share of taxes, now lets see Ted Kenney's tax returns or John Kerry's wife returns "The Hines Foods".

Darth Vadik, CA   May 23rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET
