Obama has looked to tie McCain to Bush.
Obama has looked to tie McCain to Bush.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) - Democrat Barack Obama Tuesday continued
his efforts to tag John McCain as a candidate with ideas no different than President Bush's.

The Illinois senator highlighted McCain's scheduled Tuesday evening closed-press fundraiser, where Bush and the presumptive Republican nominee will appear together.

"No cameras, no reporters, and we all know why," Obama said. "Sen. McCain doesn't want to be seen, hat in hand, with the president whose failed policies he promises to continue for another four years. Now the question for the American people is do we want to continue George Bush's policies?"

To this, the crowd promptly answered, "no."

Obama, though, isn't completely in the clear himself when it comes to private fundraisers. The "bitter" controversy int he wake of Pennsylvania's primary contest stemmed from comments the White House hopeful made at a closed-door event in San Francisco April 6.

What I'm wondering is why the democratic congress hasn't ended the war yet when they can easily cancel the funding with their majority.

At this point and time, the average American will agree that basically the last 2 years this economy has dropped lower than ever expected. Gas prices are outrageous. Unemployment is out of hand. Resources aren't available to help struggling individuals and families. Whatever the Bust Administration has proposed is not working. Enough of Bush. We need Obama!!!! We need help. Some people are having to quit their jobs or get fired because they can't afford the gas to get to and from their jobs. This is pathetic. Go Obama Go!

Senator, sit down, get comfortable, take a deep breath, then take a chill pill. Also, you may not want to open your mouth before your brain is engaged again.

Stay tuned! More bloopers coming at you. And then, the Senator's campaign goes into full spin mode and the major media swallows it and applauds.

God help America!

neutral   May 27th, 2008 9:43 pm ET

does Obama have respect only for himself? Does he have any respect for others, for other opposition? They are people too, they also do their work.....nobody is perfect, neither Mr. Obama. No one.

And if he disrespect president this much, how can he expect any respect for himself? Rudeness, arrogance are very bad, very wrong – it does not bring respect, it might bring fear, but not respect.

there is a golden saying:
Do what you want to be done to you, do not do what you do not want to be done to you.

It is amazing that there are some people who are opposed to Obama who still willing to ignor reality and spread the nonsense that Barack refuses to stand for our national anthem. If any of these Republicans TRULY care about proper respect for our anthem, they should go to YouTube and other sites that show that recent REPUBLICAN Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert DOESN'T EVEN KNOW THE WORDS to our national anthem. That is true DISREPECT rather than picking on someone who stood at attention, SANG the CORRECT WORDS and applauded after.

Let's deal with reality not HYPOCRISY.

Maybe Obama can borrow McCain a fake uncle for awhile, just to raise some quick cash, maybe the one who walked on the moon, or was Gandhi related to Obama, someone really special that McCain can brag about. Maybe there was a Kennedy airlift, and McCain can say they brought him to America. Something like that, that really gets the cult going, they cough up a lot of cash when they are inspired.

Obama and Clinton have been saying that McCain is just a third term for Bush policies for months, why is it now, all of a sudden, so negative and disrespectful?

Don't be bitter and take it out on Senator Obama for pointing out what most of us have already deduced from these fundraisers. The truth is that McCain says he is different than Bush but then turns around and touts many of Bush's policies as his own and then has the man doing major fundraising for him.

Give me a break.

Saying that McCain is another four more years of Bush is like saying HW Bush was four more years of Reagan. It just simply isn't true. Each is different in his own way. McCain is a maverick, which is why many HRC supporter, including me, will find it very easy to vote for McCain in November.

Now that Obama is our man, and has all but locked down the nomination, it's time to move forward against McCain, and I'm all about the contest. But, Obama has to be right–it's not enough to be the nominee. He can't just say one thing and do another. He had a closed-door meeting before, so criticizing McCain for the same is kind of shallow. C'mon Obama, make us proud, but don't fall prey to all the behaviors you've criticized. Don't be two-faced like Hillary. Lead by example.

Iteresting that Obama is being critical of McCain for having a closed fundraiser. Didn't Obama have a closed funraiser a while back in SF? Isn't that where the 'bitter' comment came from? Obama, just like Clinton, cannot get away from his own lies and deceptions.

Matthew   May 27th, 2008 9:03 pm ET

McCain is a robot. Why wouldn't he follow the failed republican farce that currently lives at 1600? The past 8 years are a joke. I see the republicans getting smoked this Nov.

Buck, TX   May 27th, 2008 9:02 pm ET

This guy will denigrate anybody, even his own grandmother, if he thinks it will put him a step closer to the oval office. McCain has no interest in continuing Bush's failed policies for another 4 years. This is just more crappola pouring out of Obama's mouth. And I guess, the elitist Obama learned what can happen when one swaggers around in front of supporters at a closed fundraiser, blabbing about anything that comes to mind. Or maybe not. He lied with ease today when telling that big story about how his uncle (not!) helped in the evacuation of prisoners at Auschwitz (not!), then his handler corrected it to Buchenwald and that wasn't correct either. What a mess!

Mccain had better prepare for a stomping this November, and he won't have anyone to blame but himself for unwisely aligning himself with bush.

Since the media is not allowed behind his 'secret' fund raising meeting with bush, we Americans will just have to make our best educated guess as to what events are taking place.

My guess is Mccain is sitting on Bush's lap (yes, like his lap dog), barking whenever bush says the phrase "they hate us for our freedom"

Obama "the point your finger and place blame candidate" with no experience or solutions of his own. Blame, blame blame........

Obama probably should use better reasons to bash McCain on Bush fundraising for him. History showed that when Al Gore refused help from an almost impeached Bill, he lost or nearly lost the bid. McCain would be smart to accept GW's help with fundraising. McCain is also famous for working with people from another party such as Ted Kennedy so it would be uncharacteristic of him to keep Bush at a distance.

To be presidential, you have to work with all Americans, no matter if it's Bush or Hillary. Somehow, it's strange for Obama to criticize McCain for working with Bush when he said he would meet with the Iranian president alike. I thought he would be more open-minded than that.
Bush is an American after all. I would trust Bush with our White House furniture and treasure 100%, but I cannot say the same with the Clintons. I disagree with Bush on many of his policies, but he probably makes a trustworthy neighbor, especially Laura.

I mean is this what we have to look forward to until November. He held closed fundraising to guess he didnt want everyone to know that his money doesnt ALL come from citizens. Also his camp has been critical of Hillary on the slide inflamming the bosnia story and the bobby kennedy story. And look it what we have looks like Obama exaggerates too. Of course when golden boy gets caught in the lie his followers say no big deal. But if Clinton says she misspoke its calculated and she if vile and should burn right? I hope Obama comes up with something new because if all they are banking on is that people hate George Bush they have a rude awakening coming.

McCain says Obama is inexperience. Let us look at how both Obama and McCain started their respective primaries. Obama did not scape any of the given states that have taken part in the DNC primary.
McCain other hand scaped Iowa. who is inexperience? Obama demonstrated that he can start from the beginning and end the race with astounding applause. McCain proves he can ignore fewer of the American people and still be rewarded the nomination. McCain, you are out of touch with the American People. No more Bush's policies. Hillary was never going to be the candidate from the begining. All this is a show and it's was fixed from the start. Only problem with this selection is Obama wont win. He's a Freshman Senator without experience. McCain is another Bush but he will be able to beat Obama. Democrat Leaders had the chance of a life time but a few Senior Law Makers want to use Obama like the GOP using Bush. I wouldn't be surprised if John Kerry is put in as VP. Sen. Obama has now focused his attacks on Sen. McCain as he did Sen. Clinton for many months. No doubt the press will continue to paint Obama as virtuous, unflappable, and above-the-fray. If Sen. McCain gets the same treatment from the hate-filled Obama followers who remark in these "Comments" and from the severely biased news shows and chattering pundits that Sen. Clinton was subjected to, it's all over for McCain. Then again, it could backfire on Obama this time. We'll see.

What makes you think any of them will vote for you over McCain now?

Because you were a state senator who gave a speech in 2002, you say? That's the reason you think you're in any way able to go head-to-head with John McCain and get elected President of the United States?

You're a joke with a very unfunny punch line.

Awesome! Go after 'em, Obama! Awesome strategy being on the offensive! Obama has the smarts and learned from his predecessors (Kerry & Dukakis) to take the war to the Repubs.

Watch out Mc Cain, he's only warming up and that wasn't even 1st round!

Republicans for Obama!

PS- WHAT does it TAKE to get CNN moderators to post my comments???

Charlotte   May 27th, 2008 8:11 pm ET

I guess only Obama can have closed door fund raisers? Maybe they will just get bitter and cling to their poketbooks.

Obama, Please Explain . . .   May 27th, 2008 8:11 pm ET

Obama says: "Sen. McCain doesn't want to be seen, hat in hand, with the president whose failed policies he promises to continue for another four years. Now the question for the American people is do we want to continue George Bush's policies?"

I ask Obama: "How does raising campaign money like that constitute "continuing Bush's policies? YOU are known to have attended Jeremiah Wright's race-bating church for 20 YEARS! So does that mean that you, also, will continue Jeremiah's race-bating philosophy by that fact alone?

Ron R.   May 27th, 2008 8:09 pm ET

why do senators of the opossing parties of the president seem to always blame the president for their own inabilities?...we all know the legislation comes from congress, not the president.

An American in Canada for David   May 27th, 2008 8:07 pm ET

Obama should not stress so much because he will not be in the general elections, H.R. Clinton will be the nominee and then the President.

However, he is not doing a very good job counter attacking J. McCain.

Poor Obama just can not speak , off the cuff, without getting into trouble and stuttering all over the place.

Put him in a Q&A and he stumbles and exaggerates or embellishes his anecdotes and his camp has to come out and save him once again and explain exactly, what the senator from Chicago, meant to say.

Ron R.   May 27th, 2008 8:07 pm ET

for someone that doesn't agree with war, Mr. Obama seems to enjoy attacking the President of the United States, and anyone that considers Pres. Bush the president.

lloyd Stalling   May 27th, 2008 8:07 pm ET

Hopefully the Obama camp will continue to forge ahead with it's original message of "CHANGE". However, the campaign must also address the very issues the American people are really interested in ie., high gas prices. state of the economy, the mortgage crises, better benefits for vets, the war in Iraq and restoring America to a state where the International Community will regain the level of respect it once had for the United States. I also hope the Senator from Illonois realizes that the American people "AREN'T" that "NAIVE" to believe that the war in Iraq will be over within a short period of time after the new President is sworn into office. In my opinion, Sen. Obama must "CONVEY" to his supporters and would be supporters just how "SINCERE" he is about bringing "CHANGE" to the way things will be handled from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. He does not have to go on national television and shed tears, just to get a sympathy vote from would be voters. All he has to do is be "REAL" and "TRUTHFUL" and not condenscend to the level of his opponents. The International Community may be ready to accept the change that is soon to take place, but America as a "WHOLE" isn't. This is very unfortunate, but this is "REALITY". Continue to press on Senator Obama, you have (blue collar worker) my vote.

Dawn M. Kosiek   May 27th, 2008 8:04 pm ET

Senator Obama’s family , his grandfather and uncles in World War II are not running for public office and Mr. Obama seems confused as to why he should be elected in this country.

The question is what has Mr. Obama ever done for anyone in this country and so far as I have researched, nothing. I do not see any service to this country from Mr. Obama and he is the one running for office not his relative.

“Senator Obama’s family is proud of the service of his grandfather and uncles in World War II – especially the fact that his great uncle was a part of liberating one of the concentration camps at Buchenwald. Yesterday he mistakenly referred to Auschwitz instead of Buchenwald in telling of his personal experience of a soldier in his family who served heroically,” Burton said.

Weathervane McCain speaks with forked tongue.
He wants it both ways on every issue...smoke and mirrors.
He's like Cheney with the secret meetings.
Obama's the only one who can shake-up Washington.

ksobserver   May 27th, 2008 8:01 pm ET

No matter how he tries to disguise it, electing McCain is same as another term for Bush.
will try from this browser, see you a re wedded to MS, what a shame.

Jerry in Fresno   May 27th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

Not only does he not want to be seen with Bush, seen accepting money from you know who, but not let the publicl see how few sources will be in attendance.

Nor do the sources want to be seen with McCain.

Elizabeth, NC   May 27th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

McCain, fundraising with the same President with the lowest rating in recent times whose policies he wants to 'shy' away from. He calls himself an agent of change yet he wants to finance this 'new change' with the same old money. Clear example of a flip flopper, opportunist, and an overaged moron who thinks the American people have a very short memory span.

Dori in AZ   May 27th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

No, we don't want to continue with Bush policies....

As to Obama's remarks regarding his grandmother's brother (even if he mispoke the name). . . In my family, great & step uncles and great & step aunts are just "uncle" and "aunt" to us. That's the way it is in our larger, extended, close families.

And, the emotional & psychological pain Obama's uncle experienced had to have been overwhelming. Living – or dying – in the camps was horrible. But, the liberators weren't prepared for what they found, either. How could anyone be prepared for hell?

Ryan   May 27th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

yeah but it wasn't a closed door fundraiser with Bush. That's a huge difference.

McCain is just old and twisted. And stupid

Dave from Florida   May 27th, 2008 7:56 pm ET

John McBush wants us to continue with the same failed policies that Bush has us under. Now he's at a private fundraiser with President Bush at a private home in Phoenix,

The fundraiser was supposed to be held at a convention center in Phoenix, but TICKET SALES WERE SLOW....GEEEEE!!!! I wonder why they had to move it into a smaller venue? To a private residence.

No reporters, no televison cameras at this fundraiser, no one but the top 1% of the people that McBush still want to help for the next 4 years. If McBush gets elected....We'll be paying $8.00 a gallon for gas in 4 years, still be in Iraq, about to invade Iran, Roe V.Wade will be in jeopardy with his conservative supreme court appointees, and he'll still be controlled by the still 113 WASHINGTON LOBBYISTS WORKING IN HIS CAMPAIGN.

It's time to let McBush and the Republicans know...It's time for a brignew direction, a Brighter day. A democratic majority in the House and Senate, and a Democrat President....Barack Obama.

Obama 08!!!!

Terry   May 27th, 2008 7:55 pm ET

Barack's meeting in San Francisco was with fund raisers and not with President Bush who has a 28% approval rating. Nice try, RNC, but it's not going to work. The american people are alot smarter than you think.

Finally a Democrat that hits back and hits back hard and immediately.Obama is not your average Democrat and is showing no fear of taking on McCain in the area of National security that McCain claims to be the strongest in.
Kerry and Gore avoided exactly that and lost. Finally some change.....not to quote his campaign ad.

now lets thread lightly ; now obama camp. you know how cacuasians view a black man everytime we open our mouth ,it is seen as being arrogant . when talking w/ or about our counterparts. check-out the look on the faces of the white voters [ the ones who you haven't won over ]. it is a distant cool -like lookyou get when you talk to the not ready for a blackman yet look. just go back and look at tapes or tv footage and scan the faces in the crowd of whites . you will see apprehension and a slight look of indifference . so lets come off diginfied and not cocky when we 'talk' about or address mccain and his weakness or any issue he might have its called attack w/ frm dignity. YES AND COME OUT OF PREACHER MODE . you are not talking to a congregation or choir , its the people not people in pews. and don't even think about going over to iraq . keep your freinds close and your enemines closer.

ChicoSez   May 27th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

So the policitcs of hope have degenerated into politics as usual, distort and demonize your opponent and his/hers beliefs, history and policies. Then cry foul when someone dares criticize you and call them names and hurl slurs and ridicule at the person for daring to disagree with the Obamagod. Another ex-dem for McCain.

David, Santa Rosa, CA   May 27th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

Tee hee, hee, hee... this is gonna be SO much fun! Where do we begin? The list is... endless. As a Dem. I'm truly giddy with the prospect of going up against Sen. McCain.

After the RNC fired one over the Obama bow this afternoon, I was just pickled-tink! The swift boat crews will come, but I think even the RNC knows that it's an uphill battle with a politician from the last century, with last centuries ideas and ways of doing things. Then trying to ride GWB coat tails? GW no longer has a coat. Shoot, he doesn't even have a t-shirt.

Ding, dong, the witch is dead, the wicked witch is dead! C'mon January!

Dave, SC   May 27th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

Barack, has no substance and nothing to talk about issues. He wants to talk about George bush and John McCain. Barack, your days are numbered. Go away. CNN is giving too much publicity to your talk. CNN is your mouthpiece. I am sure CNN will not publish this letter.

MGJams   May 27th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

I'm not happy that anyone has closed door meetings to raise money.
But I'm sure that CNN has closed door policies about finances too. And you are supposed to be working for the public with accurate News reports. How about Mcain meeting to raise money secretly with Bush! Whats the matter CNN, you can't find anything wrong with it unless a Democrat does it. Two wrongs don't make a right! I have a problem with CNN being secretly,, well maybe not so secretly,, supporting Republicans and the Conservative Republican Party!
How about all those phony reports about the Iraq War! did CNN even try to confirm anything that this fascist President wanted? NO! So get out of Politics and try to do real reporting CNN! Shame on your reporting practices!

Ratgurl   May 27th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

"Obama, though, isn't completely in the clear himself when it comes to private fundraisers. The "bitter" controversy int he wake of Pennsylvania's primary contest stemmed from comments the White House hopeful made at a closed-door event in San Francisco April 6."

Compared to the past 8 years of the Bush administration, I'd hardly call that a controversy!

Plus, if anyone IS bitter, it's likely due to be the fault of the the Bush Administration.

Susan/PA   May 27th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

So you bring up the "bitter" non issue ( yes, non issue..I am from PA and Obama got it right) just to balance out that McCain and Bush are "in bed together"???????

McCain is aligned with Bush 100%...............lets see him squirm out of that one come November

KSObserver   May 27th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

... McCain already has picked up the Bush habit of secrecy ... and McCain isn't even the nominee yet!

Just who does he think he is fooling? Just because there are no current pictures of him and Bush, does not mean Americans will be fooled into believing they aren't close... even after all the nasty things Bush said about McCain in 2000 ... was Bush telling lies then – or now?

McCain's fund raising reminds me of a baby playing "peek-a-boo" – who is kidding who ... and why not just have the little woman fund the campaign?? Simple to say the least.

john mccain proclaims to have different perspective than george w bush but his action prove to be the very mirrow of another bush..john mccain would rather be closeminded to the idea of of having a different approach in handling hostile leaders .he rather take a dangerous approach in puting the futureof america in a path of uncertainty than the road toward tranquility..his decscions and style reflect george bush failed leadeship..its time for a new style of leadership toward a new direction than the failed.we can no longer be the same and think the same in times that are not thesame

Seems like old Washington politics to me. Funny how Mr. Obama claims that "petty issues like this are devisive" when the media is coming down on HIM for something. But it's perfectly okay for him to make issues out of the stupidest, most petty things (e.g. a photo-op between McCain/Bush)?

...if Obama knew anything about campaigning, he'd realize that McCain has to embrace the president since he is still wildly popular among Republicans, which is the base McCain needs. DUH!

Ron R.   May 27th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

there is a fine line between disagreeing with the president of the united states of america and complete dis-respect of the position of the President of us. It would seem Mr. Obama does not seee the line.

John McCain would definitely be a continuation of Bush policies. I don't think he really understands what your everyday average citizen is facing with high food costs, gas pricing, health care, the mortgage crisis, and etc.

The "bitter" comments pales in comparison to the RFK comment and the sunnis and shiates(sp?) . No press included – you wanna bet.

I guess they are trying to tie in the stories of his cousin Cheney, his grandfather the ex- military man, the relative who helped to liberate a prison camp, and so on. Talk about being a name dropper! But give Obama some credit......he has now started to wear a lapel flag pin. I haven't heard him mention his father's side of the family lately.

Ian   May 27th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

I love the logic in this one. Obama criticizes McCain for following Bush's failed policies, and for a closed door fundraiser with Bush. Obama has a closed door fundraiser and perhaps made an inappropriate comment. Therefore Obama is just as awful as Bush's failed policies? Tough crowd.

Travis (in the real world)   May 27th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

McSame and Bush are one and the same. the same donors, the same fund raisers.
why the closed door fund raising: because the donors are the manufactures of war heads, weapons and arms. Mr McSame's presidency means more wars, more weapons and more money for the arms dealers and weapon manufacturers.
Hit him hard...................................Mcsame and Bush needs to be punched out of the white house.

Gary   May 27th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

I think the term "McSame" is being well earned. John McCain needs to distance himself from the most unpopular president in modern history, NOT attend campaign fundraisers with him!

Venus   May 27th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

Bush and Mc Same had to make this fundraiser private because they didn't sell enough tickets!

CNN -- yes we know about the bitter comments Obama made!

However – you can lump Mc Same's mistakes to Obama! It's time for Mc Same to run his bus into a ditch and get it out on his own – just like Obama did!

Go Bam! Mc Same has his hands full with you!

WendyOne   May 27th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

Nobama is attempting to tie McCain to Bush because they are both Republicans. That must mean we can tie him to Hillary because they both try to embellish their experience. First it was her under sniper fire and now he's qualified because his uncle served during WWII. Sounds like grasping at straws. How about all candidates being required to take a lie detector test and the results made public?

Shady Dealings   May 27th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

I really don't think Barack's meeting with fundraisers could be considered a fundraiser. McCain on the other hand is hosting George Bush, which is a different kind of affair. Any time the president can be photographed, there's something wrong.

That's right, Sen. Obama, a vote for McCain is a vote to continue the Bush legacy of war, lies, torture and bankrupting our nation!

McCain is nothing but a "chicken head". He spews he's a "straight talk express", but we find out that's nothing but a joke. He's got his Chief Advisor, Charlie Black who worked for some of the worlds worst dictators. AND now he wants us to believe he's NOT another BUSH. McCain doesn't want to be "seen" with BUSH but yet he's all over Bush when he needs money and when he pushed for the WAR, etc.

McCain = Bush!!! Beware!!

@wolfblitzercnn: Redskins-Giants always exciting. Both teams have a lot to prove. And Giants can still salvage playoffs. Skins just need a win.
