Former White House spokesman Scott McClellan blasts President Bush and advisers in a new book.
Former White House spokesman Scott McClellan blasts President Bush and advisers in a new book.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The spokesman who defended President Bush's policies through Hurricane Katrina and the early years of the Iraq war is now blasting his former employers, saying the Bush administration became mired in propaganda and political spin and at times played loose with the truth.

In excerpts from a 341-page book to be released Monday, Scott McClellan writes on Iraq that Bush "and his advisers confused the propaganda campaign with the high level of candor and honesty so fundamentally needed to build and then sustain public support during a time of war."

"[I]n this regard, he was terribly ill-served by his top advisers, especially those involved directly in national security," McClellan wrote.

No news here.

“Naturally the common people don’t want war. But after all, it is the
leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it’s always a
simple matter to drag people along whether it is a democracy or a
fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.
Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of
the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are
being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and
for exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every
country.”
- Hermann Goering, Hitler’s Reich Marshall, at the Nuremberg
Trials after World War II.

How anyone at all could in good conscience vote Republican this fall, is simply beyond my comprehension.

At this point, even if you don't vote Dem, it's fine. We cannot afford four more years of this. Why hasn't this administration been held accountable, Congress? Where were the impeachment hearings? Where were the trials?

Honest man for Obama   May 28th, 2008 11:26 am ET

Why don't Hillary leave the democratic party to form her own party?

She wants to decide for the leader of her party, instead of following rule that was strongly agreed upon.

Her actitdue is disgusting, the Clinton are eager to go back to the White House by all means.

If it is possible for the Clintons to buy their way into the White House they would have done just that.

It very clear that she can't win the nominee ,but yet she continues to push and criticize the leader of her party for not agreeing with her or not following Her own rules.

She doesn't take no for an answer, either she have it her way or no way. Now she is waiting for negative possibility to happen with Obama so she can steal it from Him. Is't that desparate to suggest that something negative might happen along the way and that will give her the nomination?

DNC please follow Hillary/Bill Clinton's rule so that we will have rest of mind.

Hillary have you found someone to do your dirty laundry?

I think few are surprised by McClellan's "revelations" about the misleading wool he was ordered to pull over the eyes of his fellow citizens. His personal motivation and timing, ahead of his new book release, are suspect at best. But that doesn't mean what he is saying isn't the truth as he sees it. What he thinks doesn't matter, though. What matters, is what Congress, the Senate, and ultimately we the American people decide to do with the information. Will they and we turn yet another blind eye? Think of the unrelenting tenacity Congress, and the Senate displayed to unseat a good president, albeit lesser man, in the so called Lewinsky affair. If Congress and the Senate fail to address the current adimnistration in a way that will justify their own political existence, I hope the American people will see it for the unforgivable cowardice it would be , and that they will make their opinions heard come election day. Will another smoking gun just be left where it is until the smoke clears? That is not the kind of representation I voted for. How about you?

ABB   May 28th, 2008 11:23 am ET

McClellan has apparently offered some kind of soft defense of Bush in parts of this book, saying that he and Bush were BOTH deceived by the "advisors"..even if that is the case, is THAT the president's way of leading this country? Listening to a bunch of war-mongering, deceitful, egotistical, immoral hypocrites. Bush should take the blame for being "naive" at best, or "stupid" in the reality....

It seems like everything is somehow Obama's fault or a supporter of Obama's fault. Nice try Clinton Heads!
Truth be told CNN in all their honest reporting have done little to further Obama from the get go. Even to this day. The news services are just discuised republican attacks on Obama and of course they want Clinton on the ticket they have a file about 3 feet thick on her ready to slam the woman to the ground were she to gain the nomination. As for lack of experience in the OBAMA court, I bet that was the slider they threw at Lincoln, Taft, Garfield, and many others. Truth be told we could use someone with a little common sense in the White House. Someone who acts like a human not like a banker. Hillary and her millions , whatever!! She needs a job for more money, Barack will be a good leader. You republicans need a candidate you can tell what to say and what to do or at least the Rich and Powerful can. This is America, land of the free. Not land of rules set forth by rich republicans!!! I work, I pay taxes and I vote for who I want, just like the rest of the country and if you are so thick you cant see OBAMA is who we want. No more free BONOS for Billary!!!!!!
Hillary is menapausal, like me! I know she should absolutely NOT have her finger near any RED buttons during this time in her life. Just not a good idea, what happens if she has a bad day at work, fights with Bill about Monica or Jennifer, a shot and a beer and gets the call in the middle of the night? It will be just "kill them all " thats what, she can hardly handle her out of control hubby and Peter Paul for corns sakes. Holy Buckets folks, who do you want to lead you. Someone who can think on their feet? Someone who is told what to say and like a parrot says what he is told? Or someone about to have a nervous breakdown?
Now OBAMA doesn't seem so bad does he. Common sence was a good thing when I was a child and STILL IS. Get a grip.
These false hopes about Hillary having a chance if they seat Florida and Michigan, if you went to grade school you can add. She IS NOT GOING TO GET THE NOMINATION!!!!! SHE CANT AFFORD IT NOW her money has gone into her campaign like a crazed MONOPOLY player going for broke !
I lived in Florida and saw the votes drive up and down the highway while Bush pushed to close the election. RMEMEMBER THE VOTES WERE NOT COUNTED THEN AND ALL THEY DID WAS ROLL OVER AND PLAY DEAD. Was that because the republican of choice was ahead? Is that an example of how rich republicans play the game? I think so. CNN you insult us all by not reporting the accurate numbers, or story. Why don't you quit telling your reporters what to say or has this republican thing got you by the balls too?

CNN Print this if you DARE>!

It only shows that even one of Bush's loyalist show how corrupt the Bush administration is...

But still, Scott, was knowingly and willingly immersed in all of the crap that was going on -- and was a willful participate for many, many years. Perhaps this was out of loyalty....

Which makes one wonder... is Scott doing coming out like this because he sprouted a conscious, or is he thinking about the dividends of his tell-all book?

Either way, it confirms.... Bush and crew are slime.

McBushy...   May 28th, 2008 11:14 am ET

Do this country a favor; educate yourselves before you try to vote McBushy into office!

It wouldn't have taken a rocket scientist to realize that going into Iraq to try to make them a democracy would work. What it would have taken is what only 30% of the American population has, a college education. I honestly don't think Bush would have gotten reelected if more Americans would have been knowledgeable about other cultures, something that is usually learned at a liberal arts, 4 year university and some other colleges. There are also those people who aren't college educated but read a lot about other cultures and religions, which can be just as useful, as far as understanding what's realistic.

And here we are again... Looks like the wrong person will have a good chance to become president, again, because of America's ignorants. For you Mc Cain (McBushy) fans, you go ahead and vote for that old, dusty puppet. You Christians out there, go ahead and vote for Mc Cain and watch him kill more people (including your sons and daughters) in Iraq for no reason. And don't believe that our troops are dieing for American freedom because our freedom hasn't been threaten since World War 2.

I do think Obama has something that none of the other politicians have, and that's a rich cultural background. Obama will have a better understanding of what it would take to be a good president (leader) and diplomat. Yes, our next president will also have to be a great diplomat; that's what it's going to take to get help from other countries and to reestablish a better American image in this world. Yes, this country does need help from other countries now. We need better trade deals and so on, and that might happen if our image becomes more positive.

And for you Christians out there who will always vote republican just because they seem to be Christian too, because of there feelings on abortion and whatever else, go ahead, and see how much this country will suffer if McBushy makes it in. While McBushy is killing thousands more of our troops and others for nothing, we’ll be pinching our pockets because all of the bonds (loans) that will need to be paid back to China to support a war that would cost another trillion dollars. I know the war is just a drop in the bucket compared to other financial problems, but it sure doesn't help. Who knows how much those bonds are going to cost us when they are finally paid back.

Randy - Denver   May 28th, 2008 11:12 am ET

AJ

First let me say that I appreciate your taking Marv to task, there are several supporters of Mr. Obama that need to be taken to task on these blogs.

Second I disagree with the conclusion you have reached concerning Mr. Obama. While I feel that calling someone a slack jawed mental midgeet is uncalled for I would tend to use that expression on those who claim that Ms. clinton is "Short on Rhetoric and long on substance". I would point out that her "experiance" is NOT real, her 35 years includes barely 5 years in ACTUAL public service, as has been pointed out by many serving tea during treaty discussions is not the same as discussing treaties. her time in the Senate is NOT filled with very many bills written or sponsered by her. As a matter of fact Mr. Obama has sponsored more bills in his (2 year) shorter tenure in the Senate than Ms. Clinton has, including a non-partisian Nuclear non-proliferation bill. Mr. Obama's record in Illinois is actually very strong on non partisian work to reduce corruption in the legislature there. During this campaing Ms. Clinton has used EVERY misstatement by Mr. Obama in her stump speeches where as Mr. Obama has reframed (mostly) from those type attacks. he has NEVER raised her outright lies about sniper fire in Bosnia, for example, in ANY speech. This shows a higher character, one who understands that, while in this race they are opponents, they are not, in reality, on different sides. He understands that they are trying to find the one best to articulate the beliefs of the Democratic Party and that they are NOT really enemies. Ms. clinton has forgotten that, she has forgotten that this is not about her but about who is best to represent America for at least the next four years.

So in short if you would like to articulate your objections to Mr. Obama, backed up with fact (as I have done here, breifly, with my objections) and discuss this election I would live to do that with you at any time. Your attacks on the posters here, much like Ms. Clinton's attacks on Mr. Obama (IMO) seem to say that you are not willing to ahve that discussion either. Now take your PHd and use it, vote OBAMA 08. After all I am using my 21 years as an enlisted in the Navy, my degree earned while in the Navy on my "free time", my experiance managing a fast food rest., my experiance as a bricklayer, my experiance as an Engineer and Prjoect Manager and making a thoughtful decision and voting for the one candiadte, while not perfect, who is MOST LIKELY to change the way Washington is run. i am willing to take the educated chance to better things where as you appear to be too afraid to make a change to keep the lying Washington partisian politicos in power. It has failed so far why do you think it will change?

Mike   May 28th, 2008 11:12 am ET

Why haven't the Democratic majority acted upon the current administration's policies long before this book? Bush and Cheney should be impeached for their actions while in office. The American media, for the most part, does not report civilian casualties in Iraq. The global media (European, etc...) has estimated the total deaths of Iraqi women, children and other non-combatants to be well over a half-million lives. Bush, Cheney, and the current administration would be brought before The Hague for Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide if they weren't American.

McCain may try to distance himself from Bush knowing Bush’s low approval rating but deep down everyone knows that in the end McCain will continue the Bush ways if he becomes our next President.

AJ Where do you stand on the restoration of the Constitution, or have you accepted the propaganda that we dont need civil rights, since there are terrorists under our beds? Obama and not Clinton and not McCain, will restore habeas corpus, and I dont understand anyone's fear of terrorists overriding the restoration of the Constitution.

Mike   May 28th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Whats truly tragic is that by 2004 most American's already knew that most of the information spewing out of George Bush's mouth was lies and deceit but re-elected him anyway!!!

Chris from NY   May 28th, 2008 10:43 am ET

This is something we already know. Tell us something we don't already know. I only agree with this guy in the area of the media not doing a good job by failing to seriously go after this president and his administration harder than they did.

Frank   May 28th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Brandon , is right....

Quite a few have tryed to somehow turning this on Obama?

It looks like this site is packed with paid political operatives… professionals can only make that stretch, even though they do it ineffectively.

For those saying Bush had no experience and thats why Obama scares them need to study recent history. Bush did have executive experience, and the pushers of this policy (Cheaney, Rumsfled, Wolfowitz) were the most experienced guys around.

This is about poor judgement, nepotism, and huge ego (not to mention a careless attitude) I would add. Fox News has carl Rove on as an analyst.

Just proves the point that they and Repbulicans can do all the wrong but in the eyes of other Republicans. they seem to think that they are fair and balanced.. NOT!

Everyone who voted for Bush both times should look at this as a reason to look at what this says about his legacy his administration is going to leave on this country. He is the Worst President in History. Worst Administraion in History. They all look like a bunch of crooks!
Thank God the Cold War was over when he took office or we'd all be radioactive dust!

Chicago Architect   May 28th, 2008 10:39 am ET

I believe this is just a concrete example and is an accurate account in depicting how bad this president has been in taking care of this country and its people. The apathetic nature of this president, his obvious "out of touch" relationship with the common citizen and their current plight, and his unwillingness to look at their basic needs as well as their future, truly illustrate how short sighted and cordoned off this man is to countries real needs. It shows how much he has gone to fabricate facts and information to promote his own agenda.

If half of the money he wasted on this war (and all his cronies who benefited from it) was used to help the needs of this country, (i.e. poverty, education, infrastructure, environment) the US would be better poised to help other needy countries around the world. This is not even mentioning all the goodwill the US would earn by truly acting as world leaders.

Its a real shame to realize that the actions and inaction of this president will greatly harm the future of my children and their children, mainly because of his lack of humanity, foresight, and simple common sense. Mr. Bush, may your legacy teach future generations that the good of the many truly outweigh the good of the few. The world will suffer because of your mistakes, but hopefully, God willing, new leaders, with foresight and the welfare of the people and true goodness in their hearts, will emerge this November.

Dr. J   May 28th, 2008 10:32 am ET

It is sad that so many people had to die because of this administration. The blood of every solider who has died or been injured is on this administration's hands. I am happy to know that Obama had the insight to have been against this war. The bottom line is he did not go along with the crowd, nor did he cave into peer pressure like the other "experienced" senators.

Perhaps the best lesson to be taken from this is how when journalists drop the ball and treat politicians with kid gloves, they do a disservice to America – hmmmm – sounds like the reporting on the Obama campaign – the Bush White House painted all opposition as unpatriotic and the media ran with it – the Obama picks up all critcism as racist, divisive or just plain stupid, and the media runs with that – I think this should be a wake up call for CNN in particular – what problems will you help cause in America by your timid treatment of Obama?

********************************************************************************************************************************************************
Excellent....here is a statement fraught with obamidiocy.

GWB ran as a uniter who would bring change to Washington, but he was an inexperienced mouthpiece....a lot like a certain senator from Illinois.

GWB had absolutely no experience, just like obama.
He did not know how to play the political game well but was surrounded by people who did, just like obama.

We saw how the Rove machine lied and dirtied the opposition with false labels and nasty vitriolic comments, just like Axelrod and the obama campaign and supporters.

Just because GWB was to the right doesn't make it any better that obama is on the left.....they are a perfect reflection of each other but the kiddies are too "highly educated" to have enough intelligence or common sense to see it.

LifeLongDemocrat   May 28th, 2008 10:28 am ET

The Obama supporters are happy today as it seems to support their candidate and his stand on the war. Let us not forget, however, that he did not VOTE against the war...he was not in a position to do that. Hence, he may not have been given the polluted information and may very well have voted for the war if he had been in a position to do so. This election tells me one thing about politicians: they don't do the right thing, they do what they need to do to be reelected. So much for Profiles in Courage!

Those of us who are basically anti-war supported this war as a reaction to 911 as we were told that that was the target. However, we did not go in with the strength necessary to get out quickly. Wars go on and that is a fact. I lost a family member to WW II who was killed at the end of the war. It stays with a family forever.

I am still for Hillary as she has the best experience to handle threats throughout the world. Drinking tea with our enemies is not the way to go.

Many of the comments here show signs of either extreme prejudice, delusions or even paranoia. Since the book has not even been released it is impossible to belive that many expressing there opinons are in anyway educated on the topic.

The one thing people suffering from these conditions have in common is that they tend to manipulate the facts to support there view. That's what makes them so dangerous. In it's extreme it leads to horrific acts. All one has to do is read a history book to see the countless examples.

For those of you who think that there is some kind of conspiracy, really???"

I think some of us have not suffered the delusion that everything is ok, and that GWB was a good president.
I can remember the 2000 elections clear as day and feeling like it was the end of the world, knowing that he was placed there to continue his father's war. He went into a country, bombed the sh** out of it and the Iraqi citizens pleaded for it to stop. They were no threat to us and we went there to extinguish them. And the world could only stand by and watch. The wiretapping, the "patriot act", freedom fries, zero coverage of the war, was a way to make people tow the line and we've been living in fear of our own brutal dictator for too long.

Remember when he said "You're either with us or you're with the terrorists"? I guess I'm a terrorist for not supporting this invasion.

Marv – It would seem from reading your venomous post that you have let your emotions override your intellect (if indeed you posses an IQ larger than your hat size.) Can people like you possibly find it within yourselves to have the maturity to have a rational political discussion with those that disagree with you? I have been a Democrat for 30 years and have never supported a Republican candidate for any office. Contrary to what the Obama camp would like the public to believe, I am a Clinton supporter with post graduate degrees and a very good income. I will not support Obama in the fall as I do not believe that he will be good for the nation. If you want to think me an idiot, have at it. I however can articulate my objections to Obama, unlike you slack jawed mental midgets that can only walk around with stars in your eyes babbling on about hope and change and yet support a candidate that has shown no evidence of achieving either. Obama's record is long on rhetoric and short on substance.
I think it’s time you grew up Marv. If you can’t have a cordial political discussion you really need to keep your mouth shut. Your current rant reflects poorly upon you and your candidate.

Something to Think About   May 28th, 2008 10:20 am ET

I remember a press conference in which Scott McClellan was forced to defend the Bush administration in the Valerie Plame affair after it started to become clear that there had been a cover-up. McClellan looked like he had been blind-sided. I have never believed anything this administration has said from day one, but all you need to do is read these Political Ticker blogs to see how people - including many of you now criticizing McClellan - can be so in the tank for a political figure that they don't see the often ugly truth. How else do you account for all of the sniping that goes on among supporters of the three candidates, and especially the two Democratic candidates? Their policies are very similar, and the sniping is very seldom about substance.

Maybe this is a lesson we can take from McClellan's revelations - not to let ourselves be blinded by partisanship.

tina   May 28th, 2008 10:20 am ET

Where is the outcry from the Republicans over this? Oh wait they are wasting their time over Barack's comment about his great uncle. Grow up people! Now that is worthy of an outcry. Carl Rove thanks for making me start my day with a good laugh!

War crime charges are coming as soon as Bush and Cheney are booted out of the White House and can longer protect everyone with their "executive priveledge which by the way cannot be found in the United States Constitution and is something that has been invented by our Federal Courts. Even if executive priveledge is valid, it has been overly abuse by The Bush/Cheney administration to cover up their crimes. They have it coming once this priviledge is no longer available to them for protection.

D Frank   May 28th, 2008 10:02 am ET

I think most Americans and people throughout the world are not surprised by McClellan'sstatements. Bush simply is one of the worst Presidents that America has ever elected. The thing that makes it even worse is that Americans elected him for two terms.

I guess Americans cannot be faulted for the 2000 election when Bush effectively stole the Presidency but in 2004 there was a chance to kick him out but America had their collective heads buried in the sand or somewhere else.

CB   May 28th, 2008 10:02 am ET

Impeech the President & Rove, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfovitz, Rice. All of them responsible for the lives and suffering of MILLIONS of people. The USA is bankrupt, fuel prices skyrocketing and the war drags on and on.

A vote for McCain is a vote to continue this INSANITY!

wwf   May 28th, 2008 10:02 am ET

I just love the fact that Fox News has Rove on as an analyst. Just proves the point that Repbulicans can do no wrong in the eyes of other Republicans. Go figure. Everyone who voted for Bush both times should be real proud of the legacy his administration is going to leave. Worst President in History. Worst Administraion in History. Look at all of the crooks. Second comming of Nixon.

Kyle   May 28th, 2008 10:02 am ET

What a sad state of affairs. If only you all knew what really goes on in this world you would all be shocked. This government is simply a puppet like all other governments. I will vote for Obama because I believe in the basic philosophy behind his words despite what I know to be true about this government. Remember that the entire system itself is corrupted, from the false concept of freedom to the worship of money, and one person will not free us from what is our responsiblity to free ourselves from. This is the nature of democracy and we have yet to experience a true democratic revolution in the human race. When we lead ourselves we will know that our government is for the people, by the people and of the people. Someday we will stop looking for a king to save us and start looking at ourselves. GOD IS DEAD....THE EMPEROR HAS NOT CLOTHES!

Duh. Americans knew this was a false war a long time age. Why do you think the republicans have lost so many seats in the house, and the senate. Bush's policies have only help the well connected to him and corporations prosper. It's a shame so many brave American soldiers, and innocent Iraqi civillians had to die for a lie.

Eleanor   May 28th, 2008 10:02 am ET

Scott McClelland only wrote what
everyone else knew already, that this war and other issues were based on propoganda and lies!!!! Kudos to Scott for being honest!!!
I wonder if anyone remembers the CNN documentary that came out of CNN a few years ago about the Iraq war when it was stated then that their source may as well have been named *lying sack of manure* they had it in their minds to go to war at any cost! Anyone who thinks anyone in this white house does not come out and lie and tell mis truths to cover Bushes foreign policy agenda and others is deluding themselves
They say what the white house tells them to say…plain and simple or they lose their job…
When the American people look at the death toll, vets wounded maimed and burnt do they not wonder how this president stares the american people in the face let alone look in the mirror every day
knowing this war was based on a pack of lies
might be a good time CNN to reshow that documentary!!!!

McClellan (and his ghostwriter) are trying to make a quick buck. He'll get his when other opportunists in the admn. write their books, and shed some light on McClellan's below average performance.

Just remember this: McClellan was the puppet that stood at the podium day after day and actually spoke the lies.

Who are the idiots saying Obama would be worst than Bush? It comes to a point where your emotions overrides your intelligent, and at that point you should reframe from speaking or writing until you can run it buy someone who doesn't think with their emotions. People who live, judge and vote from emotions rather than facts and principles, honestly have the minds of high school teenagers who are wrapped up in their own selfish needs.

Grow up America!!!!

I really appreciate the courage it must have taken for Scott McClellen to come forward with his observations.

I'm also glad he called the media to task for being too lenient. Although I am a Democrat, I believe that regardless of which party has the power the media has a responsibility to dig deeper than anything provided by the administration since they are the public's source of information.

Jack Jodell, Minneapolis, MN   May 28th, 2008 9:58 am ET

Bush has been using nothing BUT "propaganda" his entire term in office! His dedication isn't to the American people; it is instead to perpetual politics. The amount of spin and deliberate lies this White House gas fed us is rapidly approaching an infinite number. This man has been incapable since day one and has been surrounded by a cadre of inept, self-serving, and wrong-thinking ideologues. This is clearly the worst administration in our entire history, and we must never again allow a privileged rich man's son and good ol' boy to become president!!

There probably isn't time for impeachment prior to january '08, so as soon as they leave office, Bush and Cheney should be arrested and charged with acts of terrorism, crimes against humanity, international crimes, and be sent to iran for a determination of guilt! Think about it- 9-1-1 cost something over 3000 lives, Bush / Cheney have cost over 4000 military lives, plus tens of thousands of crippled! I notice that McSame has a plan to end the war in 2013, which means he intends to dump it off on his successor after 8 more years of troop sacrifice. Sounds like he is saying "I suffered, so I will make sure they suffer".

Independent   May 28th, 2008 9:57 am ET

If he truly "defended President Bush's policies through Hurricane Katrina and the early years of the Iraq war", then he is a hypocrite in coming out and critizicing now. Why did he not have the morality to do so when it really counted?

Brian   May 28th, 2008 9:56 am ET

What saddens me is that the majority of the American public failed to see this administration's hamfisted deception with their own eyes four years ago. Now we've paid the price of four more years of disastrous foreign policy.

Let's not make the same mistake again in 2008!!! Say no to McCain/Bush!!!

Sharon   May 28th, 2008 9:56 am ET

For those of you that are still thinking of writing Hillary in on the ballot, well you must like being deceived. this is a pure example of what goes on in the white house when people have been there too long. Get a grip on your senses and think about the corruption that goes on there. it is time for a new government and new president.

Charles   May 28th, 2008 9:56 am ET

Sorry, I do not buy the experience argument.

James Buchanan was the most qualified candidate for president yet. He gave us the Civil War. Richard Nixon had years of experience; his legacy: Watergate. George Bush I had extensive experience.

Some of the best had little or no experience: all of the original 4 or 5 presidents when this country was founded. Woodrow Wilson had very little experience. Teddy Roosevelt had very little. Ronald Reagan had his 8 years as governor. And Abraham Lincoln failed at innumerable things before he became President (by the standards raised here, he would never had made it).

Drop the experience argument. It does not hold water.

Ali   May 28th, 2008 9:56 am ET

Many of the comments here show signs of either extreme prejudice, delusions or even paranoia. Since the book has not even been released it is impossible to belive that many expressing there opinons are in anyway educated on the topic.

The one thing people suffering from these conditions have in common is that they tend to manipulate the facts to support there view. That's what makes them so dangerous. In it's extreme it leads to horrific acts. All one has to do is read a history book to see the countless examples.

For those of you who think that there is some kind of conspiracy, really???

April Garlow   May 28th, 2008 9:55 am ET

The news media that now love Obama, and are now anti-war ,were putting every pro-war advocate on everyday until the war began. They refused to question the whole concept, and called those against the war unpatriotic. I even wrote to Oprah because I was so angry about all her pro-war propaganda. They refused to cover the anti-war rallies where hundreds of thousands showed up. Funny thing is, I was against the war–I didn't give one speech like Obama, instead I wrote to my congresspeople, I marched in DC. Why didn't Obama do these things, ?Instead he hired Tom Daschle as his top advisor, the man that as speaker, strong armed the Democratically controlled congress to vote for the resolution to go to war. Tom even made the morning tv circuit and actuallysaid "they should sign it as a political gesture.

Americans who don't understand yet, will at some point in the future realize that we are in Iraq for the vital interests of the USA and for no other reason. Those Americans who believe that things are wrong because they don't have an understanding of happenings are truly fooling themselves. There are so many eventings that shape the future of the USA that is not printed in the presses or spoken of on CNN. Americans need to trust our government to do what is best for this country and stop being so stupidly cynical about everything.

The Republicans are questioning McClellan why he didn't speak out when he was Press Secretary? Easy, anyone questioning these mugs were fired or forced to quit, like Scott.

Bush wants "yes" men & women in his administration. Don't worry. It's inevitable the truth will keep coming out. I can't wait for Colin Powell's book. That will shed light on all these criminals.

Do you really want us to know that McLellan isn't the only Republican who has alleged that the war was made up on false info and ws pushed through a strong propoganda campaing? What are you trying to do with that type of information? Get people enlightened?
okay, for those who don't get this, sarcasm.
Wow, I'd forgotten about Woodward when he got the up close and personal scoop from President Bush himself. So, yep. I'm one to believe that good ole Scotty is reinforcing what a lot of people felt. Which is why 71% of America does not believe in this war now.

And, to Art, at 9:32, Come on, what's up with that brah? You too must have no children or family members who can enlist because it seems that this Iraq war going to end soon. And Iran may be next.

Ted, 9:34, so you want HIllary or McCain to start bombing on Feb 1, 2009, right? Don't you already have high enough gas prices to keep you from driving off a cliff? You bomb Iran and prices will be $10/gallon.
People, we can't keep bombing everyone. While we have the military might to do it, we are just making a mess of places that in the end comes back to hurt us economically, while the Chines hold A LOT of our debt. Le'ts hope they don't come calling anytime soon.

Jeff   May 28th, 2008 9:48 am ET

This is why we (meaning those of us who voted for him) should have realized all we were doing was electing his father to a 2nd and 3rd term. All the same group of guys, all from the same Neocon school of thought. They're all in it for the money and don't give a (bleep) about the negative effects of their actions on the nation.

Dubya is and always has been a puppet of his father and his cronies. It is time for the entire group to be investigated and, if appropriate, tried for Treason.

If the DNC change the rules for Hillary many American will lose respect for the party. Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000, GWB won the electoral college. The electoral college is how we select our president, that'S why we got Bush. The rules were not changed then and should not be changed now at least in the middle of the primary. The delagate count is how we select our nominee, If it was the other way around Hillary and Bill would not be wanting the rules changed, How can the DNC DISENFRANCHISE the caucus states who voted when they were supposed to and count to states that didn't to throw the nomination the Hillary IT IS JUST DEAD WRONG!!!!!!!

Mike in NYC   May 28th, 2008 9:48 am ET

No surprise here. By now, everyone with two brain cells to rub together knows the Iraq war was predicated on lies and concealed interests.

"Propaganda" is a value-free term. Influencing opinion is often a necessity. It's the end to which it's used that determines its morality.

Funny thing is, BO supporters will be the next echelon of flag-waving patriots once Their Man gets into office and starts His War. And it doesn't have to be a hot war. Think new Cold War.

Rudy NYC   May 28th, 2008 9:47 am ET

McClellan is being a good trooper in a back-handed way. The core of his message is that GWB is not to blame, but rather his top advisors. There "will be blood" to be had-by Democrates should they when the White House-when the investigations in how the Bush administration ran the country and made some decisions whether this book or some other "facts" came to public light.

By firing this first shot over the bow, McClellan is shifting blame way from Bush. He's actually playing the same propaganda game that he accuses the Bush administration of playing.

The Republican party, in my opinion, has really lost its' footing and sense of reality. Everything is about war. They can't do anything without talking about war. WAR, WAR, WAR and more WAR. Do they include anything else in their agendas besides maybe the nice places they vacation and the properties they own. How can we continue to tolerate such a pessimistic, doomsayer attitude? If it's not the cold war, it's the war on Iraq. If its not the Iraq war it will be another, at this rate.

BUSH ALWAYS SAID OUR MILITARY WAS FIGHTING "STREET THUGS" IN IRAQ, SINCE WHEN DID OUR MIGHTY MILITARY GO INTO BATTLE AGAINST "STREET THUGS". Have you ever considered there is NOTHING to impeach him for? Probably not. More Liberal press spin that you buy into I guess.

Roland Martin   May 28th, 2008 9:40 am ET

In the past few days, her surrogates, and even Clinton herself, have ramped up the talk about sexism. There is little doubt that she is trying to stir the ire of her female base and push them to demand that she either be the nominee or be given the vice president slot. But it's really about the former rather than the latter.

In Florida on Wednesday, she invoked slavery and the epic civil rights battle against Jim Crow in her quest to count the vote in Florida as-is.

Forget the fact that she once said the states wouldn't matter because they broke the rules.

Forget the fact that many of her supporters on the Democratic National Committee's rules committee supported the stripping of delegates in Michigan and Florida.

And forget the fact that her chief supporter in Michigan, Gov. Jennifer Granholm, a Democrat, signed the bill into law that allowed the state to move up its primary.

Clinton and her supporters now discount all of that and act as if they were always champions of the "disenfranchised" voters in Florida and Michigan. But they weren't. And the record is clear. Only when it became apparent that she needed the states' delegates to close the gap with Obama did she change her tune. She said one thing in Iowa and New Hampshire and now is saying something else.

The Clintonites don't want any compromises in Michigan and Florida. They want the results to stay the same, even though Obama's name wasn't on the ballot in Michigan and all candidates signed an agreement not to campaign in those two states.

The WHOLE BUSH clan are nothing but "ghetto gang-bangesr". These goonies went around and penalized/fired everyone who voiced any level of concerns (except of THUG MAN KARL ROWE) , then they turn around and SPIN, SPIN, SPIN....

AND to think Sen.McCain is promoting his relationship with BUSHMAN. How convenient is that? I mean, can you say "shooting myself in the foot"? Next thing we know Karl the "Thug Man" Rowe will be McCain's Senior staffer~!! ha! ha! I mean hasn't Karl Rowe been acting and talking like he's working for Sen. McCain? I mean this idiot should be buried under the jail house and yet he's touting his republican ignorance at Congress every chance he gets. Somebody please put this fool out of his misery, shut him the hell up FAST!!

McCain is soooooo dead meat come November. THIS is going to be soooo good to watch. I love it.

I know the Obama camp has bought a copy of this book and is doing some major "review" of everything written in it. BIG MISTAKE for Sen. McCain. I hope his wife Cindy bought him a respirator, because I think his blood pressure is going to go through he roof come November!

mike   May 28th, 2008 9:38 am ET

Rep. Karl Rove used Clinton to divide the Dem party, and Clinton agreed by stirring up the hate in FL. Let's pray for Saturday, Clinton and Karl Rove both wanted to see some bloodbath, let's hope no one get hurt.

Libby, you should be ashamed of yorself for chastising McClellan for telling the truth. The average American knew then as we know now that this war was waged on lies. Scott is corroborating common knowledge and will be a good prosecution witness. He will plea bargain and you know the rest. The American people can't wait for justice.

MS Redhead   May 28th, 2008 9:35 am ET

Thank you, Scott McClellan, for validating my "unfounded fears based on feminine intuition and gut instinct" prior to and after the 2000 election of George Bush. While McClellan's book lambasts the Bush administration and Republicans in general, I can see the same scenario occurring with the candidancy of Obama. I only hope that my fears regarding an Obama candidancy will not require validation four years from now because I really don't get any pleasure from saying "I told you so."

Zoey   May 28th, 2008 9:34 am ET

Whether you agree with his reasoning for writing the book or not. You have to admit that this is nothing new to the American people. We knew the Bush administration pulled off the greatest show on earth. The Iraq war.

Leslie   May 28th, 2008 9:33 am ET

in my daughters words, "Duh" , Millions of people arrond the world protested on the streets to let us know that this was just a propaganda war. Nobody listened to them. We didnt have to wait for a white house insider to tell us, we knew it.

John McInsane and Hillary Clinton backed Bush into going into War.

Mr Obama had the courage to say NO, For that reason and many many many more he deserves to be the President.

Which is why i've switched from a life long Republican to and Obamacan.

REPUBLICANS For OBAMA.

When are the american people going to wake up and demand that Bush be impeached? "Why, the only reason this does not happen is because Cheney would destroy this country in a few short months and no one wants to give him that must power. None of this that Scott McCellan brought out is new we have heard it all from several people.
So why should it be any big surprise. McCellan, was doing his job by lying to us also. Matbe he decided to clear his name by telling the truth.
But is is to late for him to try and save himself now!

Listen   May 28th, 2008 9:32 am ET

Now you have another dummy telling you whatever you want to hear, and you are willing to follow her so she can make herself richer, and if not then vote for the first dummies that used you. YOU ALL DESERVE WHAT YOU GET. I'm glad I'm rich instead of being angry with the real dummies. Anybody with intelligence knew from the start that everything was a lie. But you all let your emotions get the best of you and look what you've done and now you are willing to do the samething. DUMMIES!

Uncle Sam   May 28th, 2008 9:31 am ET

Although members of the Republican party, Pres. Bush and Sen. McCain are two very different people. The truth is that Sen. McCain opposed the president's execution of the Iraq War from the start, advocating for a strategy which risked his presidential chances and has proven correct. Had Sen. McCain's proposal been adopted earlier, it is likely that the human and financial costs of the war would have been considerably less.

The same propaganda that is being used to push the Iran war.
Bush may be a good man, but he has surrounded himself with vile, blood thirsty advisers who do not have the US of A's best interest in mind. Examples- Wolfowitz, Libby Libowitz, Perle, etc.

proud army and navy mom   May 28th, 2008 9:29 am ET

To JC
you are an idiot. this has nothing to do with Obama. Are you obsessed with him?

the story is about scott and the corrupt current administraton that is still overseeing this illegal war that they have our hardworking young troops fighting.

it's about all the people that were injured and killed because of total idiots and complete incompetence.

When will the impeachment hearings begin?

they need to drag bush, rice, cheney, rove and yes, scott to the middle of the street and have them tortured and killed just like the innocent people that died because of their proproganda.

Doug R.   May 28th, 2008 9:29 am ET

Bush has done nothing but lie, mislead, and deceive the American people since the day he took office. He promised us all that he would restore honesty, dignity, and integrity to the White House. Nothing has been further from the truth. He is profoundly incompetent and history will judge him to be the very worst President the United States has ever had.

C. CONCERNED CANADIAN   May 28th, 2008 9:29 am ET

a comment to George (second entry on this list). Wow!! This is the first time in a very long time that some one has bother to to mention Iraqi losses as well as American. Good on you, George.

One of the tings that strikes me about this ficyion that Bush and his minions perpetrated on the world is that, on 911 approximately 3000 innocent individuals lost their lives. Since this war began, more than 4000 ov you brave citizens have ben killed adn, according to various estimates, anywhere between 50,000 and 1 million innocent Iraqis have died. I am very hard pressed to understand how the lives of the survivors of all of these people (US and Iraqi alike) are better off now the Hussein is out of the picture.

If this does not quallify as a war crime – crime againt humanity- what does??!!!!

Sam   May 28th, 2008 9:28 am ET

I count 3 out of the first 20 posts somehow turning this on Obama?

This site is packed with paid political operatives... professionals can only make that stretch, even though they do it ineffectively.

For those saying Bush had no experience and thats why Obama scares them need to study recent history. Bush did have executive experience, and the pushers of this policy (Cheaney, Rumsfled, Wolfowitz) were the most experienced guys around.

This is about poor judgement, nepotism, and huge ego (not to mention a careless attitude)

Gregory   May 28th, 2008 9:26 am ET

I have every reason to belive this guy! I just hope that the millions of American fools who put Dubbya in a first or second term have the intelligence to believe him as well. It seems that anyone who shines light on the deficiencies, shortcomings, and outright failures of the Dubbya administration is turned into an unpatriotic, radical idiot. This guy was a principal figure in the Dubbya administration, now, because he wants to speak the truth, he is incompetent. More power to Mr. McClellan! The Lord only loves the truth...and you sir, are definitely showing your stones and being honest about how much Dubbya could care less about real American people and real American issues.

Bush is a war criminal.

Robert   May 28th, 2008 9:24 am ET

It's nice to have confirmed what we have known for the past 5 years. Why doesn't the democratic congress start impeachment? Because they are cowards and that is why the congress has so low poll numbers. Pelosi and Reid are jokes as the party leaders in congress and Howard Dean has been a nightmare as DNC chairman. Combine those failures with Obama's grab for power and all I can say is, I hope McCain drops Bush's policies when he gets elected and all this crap he is spouting now is just to keep the right wing of his party happy.

Oracle99   May 28th, 2008 9:24 am ET

Is this anything that we didn't know? The American people should know thay were duped into supporting this war. That's one reason Colin Powell resigned, because he had been used, by presenting manipulated intelligence. Scott McClellan probably is coming clean now, because he is afraid that Bush and his cronies might be indicted for some of the crimes they have committed, and he wants immunity.

PSK   May 28th, 2008 9:23 am ET

GUN merchants and Oil companies, I hope make profit at the expense of innocent lives. McCain want this murderous episode to continue for another 100 years.

Either McClellan was dumb during his job (and now tells truth) or is dumb now (but formerly told truth). Eitherway, this shows the degree to which the Bush Administration is chock-full of dullards. It's a reminder of numerous other White House twits, like Alberto Gonzales, Monica Goodling, and Harriet Miers.

Obama The King   May 28th, 2008 9:18 am ET

This adminstration should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law! AND YOU PEOPLE VOTING FOR OBAMA better realize if McCain gets in, they will all be pardoned! You need to vote for Hilary. Obama 's baggage is starting to manifest now and I suspect by Nov we will have alot of reasons why not to vote for him. Hilary would never pardon this crew...

Whoever runs lets "bad mouth" them and tell lies about them and all the media will publish everything we pay them to publish and say all good things and cover up everything for Obama (god). Right! I will never vote for Obama now that the media and the super deligates have proven a conspiricy against Hillary and now Mccain. I will never vote for Obama, never!!

Tony   May 28th, 2008 9:17 am ET

Congress will launch investigations no matter who the next president is and many in the Bush administration will go to jail. Bus/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rice should all be tried for crimes against humanity and either excuted or sent to prison for life...and that is only th tip of the iceberg.

Jill American   May 28th, 2008 9:16 am ET

The American people knew it was lies but Scott didn't? C'mon!

Javid Radfar   May 28th, 2008 9:15 am ET

McClellan is not telling the truth! He stood by the president at that time, and now he simply claims what ever has been said is a lie? Does it make him a liar too? I believe McClellan is doing nothing but promoting his book and make some money out of it!

Tony   May 28th, 2008 9:15 am ET

Give me a Break!

Althougn Bush.Cheney/Rumsfeld and so many others in the Bush administration, McClellan included, are blood-thirsty, war mongering, lying, cheating, frauds, McClellan is far from a victim here.

Fact is he lied, covered-up, and pushed Bush's agenda and lies through with both hands knowing full well that he was lying and now wants everyone to believe he was deceived and not given accurate information.

B.S.! McClellan was a willing participant from the day he becamse Bush's mouthpiece and did not have the morals, decency, courage or sense to walk away and tell the truth. Typical republican! Scott not only drank the Kool-Aid, but asked for a refill.

The ONLY reason McClellan is speaking out now is crystal clear to anyone with an ounce of common sense. THE MAN HAS A BOOK TO SELL! You're don't fool anyone any longer Scott, although I'm sure you will make a tidy profit off of the fools who will buy your book.

Better keep that Kool-Aid flowing Scotty Boy!

j williamson   May 28th, 2008 9:15 am ET

Chyrel Wallace-Jackson, Chicago Illinois   May 28th, 2008 9:14 am ET

How is this news, CNN? 95% of the American people have known this for the past 6 1/2 years. Unbelievable.

Phil From VA   May 28th, 2008 9:13 am ET

When can we get this guy out of the White house? I hope he pays for the 4300 soldiers.

American Girl   May 28th, 2008 9:13 am ET

Here are my thoughts.....

First let me state that I have the utmost respect for Gen. Collin Powell, however when he was in Bush's cabinet, his oposition to Bush would have been greater respected and had a true impact on history had he spoken out or resigned at the time of the events. The lies and propaganda by the Bush/Chenney/Rumsfeld/Rove/Libby era of deceit has ruined many lives and the reputation of our nation.

Similarly, Scott McClellan should have spoken out at the time.

The problem is that people are not standing out at the time of injustice, but are sitting back and letting history or should I say bad judgement and gross errors take place before they speak out.

Think of how may lives have been lost, how many injuries have ocurred, how many people from Katrina are without homes and lives have been changed.

We need men and women in these key roles to either speak out or resign at the time of the events... this is what carries weight.

Anyone can write a book or do an interview with hindsight after the gross errors have been made and out in the open.

I say the next person to write a "tell all book' will be C.Rice in 2010.

But..... Better late than never.

Kim G   May 28th, 2008 9:13 am ET

And McCain want to continue these policies of propaganda. Lie, cheat steal (and BORROW our children's money) is the GOP way.

trellskig   May 28th, 2008 9:12 am ET

ah huh! I was waiting on CNN to post this story. Bunch of liars, the whole administration is. Why now? Why talk and right a book now but you held back before? You should be jailed, liar!

Bush and his whole administration should be locked up. Just think, if this guy lied, to cover up for Bush, there are plenty of others that have untold secrets...LIARRRSSSS!!!!!

Finally Decided   May 28th, 2008 9:10 am ET

Scott, Wichita. I don't think you can compare a phrase to propaganda that got over 4000 of our troops killed. Grow up.

mj - Florida   May 28th, 2008 9:08 am ET

It is good that Scott McClellan is finally coming out with the truth that so many have been, at the very least speculating, for years. His denial for his part in the debacle shouldn’t be surprising. His job at the white house was to spin the truth to make the administration look clean and sparkly. Now he is using his skills for his own reputation.

fred2..since another stole my name   May 28th, 2008 9:07 am ET

Dud...we didn't know this already!! This is what you get when you put someone in the White House that doesn't have a clue!!

Walt   May 28th, 2008 9:06 am ET

Is anyone surprised? And the same people are trying to convince you that Iran is as great a threat as Iraq was... Wake up America!!

And, do not judge him for not speaking out during his white house tenure, there are certain rules against what you can and cannot say while you hold certain government positions. And, there is such a thing as misguided loyalty.

So, go ahead and vote for Mr."I won't meet with leaders of enemy states." Or, Ms"I will obliterate the entire country."

Wake up America!

CW4Barak   May 28th, 2008 9:06 am ET
