Perino expressed disappointment with McCllelan's new book.

(CNN) — White House Press Secretary Dana Perino just released the following statement on former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan's new book.

"Scott, we now know, is disgruntled about his experience at the White House. For those of us who fully supported him, before, during and after he was press secretary, we are puzzled. It is sad - this is not the Scott we knew.

"The book, as reported by the press, has been described to the President. I do not expect a comment from him on it - he has more pressing matters than to spend time commenting on books by former staffers."

Let me get this right, the Republicans are blaming Scotty for the way the war was portrayed, eh? Wow, people! They give him far more credit for what went wrong in the Bush Administration than he ever could have imagined! He was a "mouth piece", nothing more, nothing less. He was given his 'marching orders' by the Elite. He never spoke a word of his own. Don't blame the loudspeaker for what comes out! There were those in Bush's circle of power that dictated what, where and when he spoke. He was a messenger…let's tar and feather him for what he was told to say? Hmmm…however, he's speaking his own 'words' now. Beam me up, Scotty!

Robert   May 28th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

If your boss' reference isn't worth a cent and waiting to publish a book about his real self after he's retired won't earn you a dime, you go for the big bucks now while he's still employed and sink him for the only gain you're likely to make from knowing him. If Scott woke up one day and decided to have a conscience about Iraq, he could have sought work as a correspondent vs. doing something like this that's going to leave him set financially for life. I see shades of Michael Moore in this. Can we please turn the page on this book and let the reputable & honest have a chance at running our government.

SB   May 28th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

I guess this means that Dana Perino is a liar as well. Just what I'd expect from the Bushies.

Julie   May 28th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

Why would Dana Perino's opinion make a rats patooties worth of difference? She is a shill in the absolute worst form. I'd expect no less from her.

Kaci   May 28th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

The fact that the white house didn't see this coming is proof positive that it is true. Had they known, they would have crucified Mcclellan in the press BEFORE the book dropped. Of course, now all the Bush loyalists will come out of the woodworks to taint this man's name. Who in their right mind, after having been in and dealt with the Bush administration for so long, come out with this scathing info if it wasn't true? Cheney would probably have had this guy killed if he had advance knowlege of the book. Mr. McClellan doesn't appear to be so stupid as to ruin his career, life and put his family in danger of Bush retalliation if it wasn't true.

Really, did you not have any parents to instruct you in common courtesy.

It is the end of a Bush/Cheney 8 years hell rule and the smart people are of course, jumping off the sinking ship.

The new ship sailing in to set a new course is the H.R. Clinton.

The H.R. Clinton is a ship that knows the troubled waters and know how to navigate the trecherous onslaught of storms.

H.R. Clinton, the next durable, true and substantial President 2009-12

We have to take this 'new' information with a pinch of salt: is there any evidence that McClellan demonstarated some disatidfaction during his tenure at the Whie House? Then this book has much more credibility. Nevertheless, this book's content does not surprise me: we knw all the time that Bush, et al, was not on the up and up. I envision, among other things, his calling daddy after the invasion saying: "this is for you", since the feeling since the Gulf was we didn't do enough to get Sadam the first time–even knowing 9/11/WMD had nothing to do with it. Any good words about the VP?

What a job, Ms. Perino — lackey press secretary for an administration known for its lies. It must be unsettling when a former lackey — the Scott McClellan you knew — decides he's had enough.

Mr. Bush seems to have succeeded taking politicking to the highest height and governance to an absolute bottom. This is exactly the type of Washington politicking that Mr. Obama is against. The need has never been this urgent to re-establish honesty and dignity back in the Nation's highest office.

I have been a Republican all my life but I can't bring myself to say that anymore. I am ashamed of this so called President we have in the house. He was going to invade Iraq no matter what. Lies more lies also this man knew and is still a part of the conspiracy for higher oil and gas prices. He and Chaney are making a fortune. He does absolutly nothing to stem the rise. He just sits there with his finger up his butt and smiles. Screwing the American people is his claim to fame.

Stevem7   May 28th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

It's funny, anytime someone says the truth about things and it's unflattering then it must be a disgruntled employee. Dana Perino CANNOT refute one thing said in the McClellan so instead she chooses to issue a statement (Who asked her anyway) saying that this is not the McClellan that they knew and supported. Read between the lines folks … everything McClellan said is the honest to god truth because not one BUSHIE has refuted any of it. They just slam McClellan.

Actions always speak louder than words and our ears have been numbed by the blast of bombs, the lies, the complete and unabashed duplicity of this administration. Although members of the Republican party, Pres. Bush and Sen. McCain are two very different people. The truth is that Sen. McCain opposed the president's execution of the Iraq War from the start, advocating a strategy that risked his presidential chances and has proven correct. In fact, had Sen. McCain's proposal been adopted earlier, in all likelihood the loss of life and treasure would have been greatly reduced.

I wonder if Scott's book will sway the judges opinions and lead to a reduction of his sentance when he's sitting in front of a war crimes tribunal. I appreciate his honesty, however, nothing new to anyone with an ounce of intellectual curiosity. The crimes which have been committed against our nation, the sovereign nation of Iraq and the constitution of the United States are staggaring to say the least. Scott's book only underscores these facts and provides more testimony against the guilty. Does anyone know if Scott provides any information Jeff Gannon? Jeff Gannon, the male prostitute who was planted in the White House press core to ask softball questions leading up to Iraq invasion. I've always wanted to know who was paying for his "services".

Dave, SC   May 28th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

He is just smart. He released his book at the right time to make sales. He was a part of all the lieing and cover ups too. Just because he is not doing it at the time changes nothing. He is an oppurtunist like Hillary Clinton.

ATTENTION ALL YOU BLOG READERS.
Go to the Ticker showing Bush with McCain. That picture is worth more than any comment. All you people who say you'll vote McCain instead of Obama need to take a good long look at this picture. Because that's what your gonna get. And when you're sitting at home in your living rooms, snug in your glee at helping defeat Obama, your sons and daughters will be off somewhere fighting this mans war. And when the doorbell rings, and a military chaplin is standing on your porch with a cable in his hand, you will have reaped what you have sown. Your pettiness will be the wreath you lay at the foot of your childrens graves.Shame and pity on you all!

It's irrelevent to comment on by the president, but everyone connected with him seems to have the same canned comment, we're surprised, it doesn't sound like the man I knew, he never complained. They obviously didn't know him, he liked keeping his job, and so they are surprised. Doesn't seem like enough to discredit him. They just don't like his honesty. Too bad!

Unfortunately, the Democrats share some of the blame for not performing their constitutional duties, including bringing and end to this "war".

Why do you think Tony Snow left? He wanted to be a honest man during his remaining years before his cancer gets to him. God bless both Scott and Tony!

Randy M, NY   May 28th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

I'm not a supporter of Bush by any means but I say big deal about McClellan. We all know the administration lied. If these guys had principles and moral character they would have resigned on the spot. Instead they sign multi-million dollar book deals to spill the beans later on. It's all a pile of garbage and it's time we Americans take out the trash.

Cathy in MD   May 28th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

“We are puzzled” … “it is sad” … and, no comment from Bush who has “more pressing matters” than this!!?? Such serious charges by a former press secretary with whom he had a close relationship and Bush has no comment?! Wow. Well then, that pretty much confirms all of it.

Hey Campaign Strategist:

You are absolutely wrong. There is so much more to the Bush legacy than the war in Iraq. $3.5 trillion in debt, an anemic economy, declining real wages and standard of living, failed energy policy, record energy prices, housing market collapse, record foreclosures, curbing civil rights, use of torture, fewer allies, more enemies, Kyoto, Enron, Worldcom, Walter Reed, Plout (sp?), and so, so, so much more.

Mike   May 28th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

No doubt. The Scott that they thought they knew. Was supposed to lie and support this horrible war that Bush initiated to avenge a death threat that Saddam made against his Dad. Scott always looked strained when he was on TV. It was clear that his heart was not in to what he was saying. We have endured eight years of lies and foolishness. If McBush is elected we will endure four more years of the McSame thing.

McClellan is saying nothing that has not been said before, Clark, remember him, the terrorist specialist that said the new administration did not want to hear about bin Laden and his group prior to 9-11. Clark brought our many of the same criticisms of the Bush adminstration but was set aside as being disgruntled and not doing his job by the administration.

It has been stated for years that this President does not want to hear what he does not want to hear. That Staff meetings are a lecture by the President with bobble heads sitting around the table. Disagreement is not an option, nor is data that does not support preconceived ideas and plans.

It is amazing how anyone who has worked within this administration becomes a disgruntled former employee after the fact for telling what they saw.

Scott apparently has had to live with the lies he told for Bush, and it's getting to him. A friend and I were IM'ing each other about McClelland's book and said that basically the same thing at the same time..

That we both always thought there was something up with him…like he always having an internal conflict between what the administration wanted him to say to the media..and what he knew to be true.

That's why he left the job…his conscience finally won out and he couldn't keep lying anymore.

Obviously, Dana Perino doesn't suffer from the same disability - she, like Bush, Cheney, Rove, Ashcroft, Rumsfeld, Rice…has no conscience.

I feel sad for Mr Mclellan. A white press secretaryhas his credility in question. This will affect his future employment for sure. I will not hire him, I know. Maybe that's why hewrote the book, for income.

If this is the case, he is an accessory to the fact. He has an obligation to the american people to object when he new the facts were all wrong.

McCain is the sure winner in Nov. since the Kennedy Democrats have won over the Clinton Democrats this time. Clinton Democrats will return strong 2012 and by then the young voters will be older and wiser and will vote for polices and issues and not American Idol style.

DK in VA   May 28th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Still waiting for someone in the WH to actually say the book is untrue.

Everyone says things to discredit it but I am not yet seeing any reports of a senior staffer, etc saying that the main points of the book are not correct or are lies.

Likely only the beginning of the end of the Bush bubble. With his popularity in the toilet and his presidency becoming irrelevant, more people are going to be coming out with their stories.

Sure, they should have resigned sooner but it is not hard to understand that some stayed thinking they were doing the right thing or just wanted to stay where the power is. Colin Powell is a perfect example of someone who should have resigned before the 2004 election.

The only thing that they should be puzzled is why his approval ratings is in the 20s….how could there possibly be so many incredibly stupid people in this country that they still think Bush has done a good job.

Worst president in history…but he's almost gone.

arc   May 28th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Why haven't the Democratic majority acted upon the current administration's policies long before this book? Bush and Cheney should be impeached for their High Crimes and Misdemeanors while in office. The American media, for the most part, does not report civilian casualties in Iraq. Foreign media sources have estimated the total deaths of Iraqi women, children and other non-combatants to be well over a half-million lives. Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld and others would be brought before The Hague for Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide if they weren't American.

colleen   May 28th, 2008 11:56 am ET

That's an odd statement. Instead of saying "Scott, we barely knew ye", how about "we categorically deny the accusations brought forth by Scott."

Oh wait, because they can't.

Looks like the floodgates are opening. Hope Bush has a helmet.

Mary   May 28th, 2008 11:55 am ET

McClellan is just stating the facts.

Was there a good reason why Bush & McCain voted to go ahead and start the Iraq war? NO

Was there a good reason that why Bush & company completely blew it on Katrina? NO

Was there a good reason why we are continuing an unwarranted war in Iraq? NO

Was there a good reason to continue to spend so much money on this unwarranted war and not on the Americans who need it more? NO

McClellan is not the only one to regret. Many Americans also got duped and now wished they had never voted for the Bush/McCain policies.

nannie bouroughs, Kenosha, WI   May 28th, 2008 11:55 am ET

Hey folks, especially for you with an IQ in the 10 area: The sole qualification for the position of "White House Press Secretary" is the ability to lie well to always make the folks in the White House look good!

They ALL do it, Democrats and Republicans; the really sad part of Scott's book is the fact that the Liberal Press here in America KNEW this and still bought EVERYTHING and resold it to US!

That's what has happened to democracy in America; sort of makes one pine for the days of Pravda…

Where was Hillary Clinton when Huricane Katrina crisis? What exactly did she do or what kind of help she gave and how soon was that?

Why don't Hillary leave the democratic party to form her own party?

She wants to decide for the leader of her party, instead of following rule that was strongly agreed upon.

Her actitdue is disgusting, the Clinton are eager to go back to the White House by all means.

If it is possible for the Clintons to buy their way into the White House they would have done just that.

It very clear that she can't win the nominee ,but yet she continues to push and criticize the leader of her party for not agreeing with her or not following Her own rules.

She doesn't take no for an answer, either she have it her way or no way. Now she is waiting for negative possibility to happen with Obama so she can steal it from Him. Is't that desparate to suggest that something negative might happen along the way and that will give her the nomination?

Am an upstate NY conservative who got a good laugh reading Perino's statement on this book release. I applaud her for performing her duties as White House Spokeswoman but the WH is really deluding themselves if they are surprised because this does not sound like the Scott they knew. How difficult is it for them to understand that people can reflect about something they participated in and maybe express some regrets about their involvement? They are trying to make him out to be a pariah because he isn't towing the party line. Some may not agree with what he did but that doesn't diminish his insight into what he saw was happening. To his credit, he is still rather protective of the President and is basically blaming the subordinates.

Michael, an independent Canadian   May 28th, 2008 11:41 am ET

When one is accused of a wrongdoing and does not react STRONGLY to those accusations, then it can only mean one of two things:

1. The accusations are true and it would be difficult to refute them, or

2. The accusations are true and any strong response only fuels the media to give this matter more public attention. Bush doesn't want McClellan's books to sell.

It is interesting to note that Perino DID NOT STATE THAT THE WHITE HOUSE DENIES the statements made in the book, but they are only confused about them!!!!

Colony14Author   May 28th, 2008 11:41 am ET
