From
The contents of McClellan’s book surprised many of his former colleagues.
The contents of McClellan’s book surprised many of his former colleagues.

(CNN) - When Karl Rove was first asked about the incendiary allegations in former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan’s new book ‘What Happened,’ he said it was ‘irresponsible’ for McClellan to assume that a meeting between him and Scooter Libby was about getting their stories straight regarding the Valerie Plame leak.

And when current Press Secretary Dana Perino, who cut her teeth in McClellan’s press shop said the White House was ‘puzzled’ by McClellan’s assertions, and repeated what now appears to be the official White House line on this latest turncoat - “not the Scott McClellan we knew”.

Who is the Scott McClellan I knew? I spent 6 years at the White House for CBS News. I first met Scott as the deputy to Ari Fleischer and got to know him pretty well. He was a good guy, though something of a tightwad with information - always frustrating when your job is to pry tangy little nuggets of news out of the Administration. He was a man of good humor, fair and loyal to a fault. I had never known him to cross anyone in the White House, or break a confidence. I think you would hear the same from my former colleagues.

But something changed when McClellan found out he had been duped by Rove and Libby in his October of 2003 assertion that they had not been involved in the Valerie Plame leak. I talked to him about it in his office one day, and while he didn’t give away outward emotion, I could see in his eyes that something had shifted. He had been hung out to dry and he did not appreciate it one bit. McClellan remained the loyal soldier, but from that day forward, you could see that he no longer believed.

That betrayal of trust was much deeper than anyone, including myself could have imagined. His criticism of the White House and the president - extraordinary for a former press secretary - runs the gamut from the CIA leak to an “unnecessary” war in Iraq to Bush’s “lack of inquisitiveness.” I have never known a press secretary to be anything more than mildly critical of his or her former boss. Scotty has very nearly set fire to the building.

And in expected fashion, White House officials, current and former have cranked up the machine to destroy his credibility, dismissing McClellan as ‘out of the loop’, suggesting he was basically a flack and not really a part of the president’s inner circle. Perino even called him a ‘sad’ figure. In the past, the White House has flensed its turncoats with the expertise of a 19th century New England whaleman. Just ask Paul O’Neill or Richard Clarke - former Bush loyalists who dared to transgress the unwritten code.

But I have a sense this time will be different. McClellan is stating the now obvious - the accepted - the widely believed. A minority of Americans think the Iraq war was necessary. A court of law has ruled that Scooter Libby lied. And there’s pretty good reason to conclude that Rove only escaped prosecution by the skin of his teeth.

So the problem with the White House taking the long knives to McClellan is this: With the benefit of hindsight, more reasonable people are likely to believe him than those who denounce him.

So she is sending Demorcratic superdelegates information from a Republican....LOL. And FRED you wonder why your candidate is losing?

If the Rove and Libby conspiracy meeting disturbed McClellan so much, he should talk to AUSA Fitzgerald about it if there's anything he hasn't already told him about the case.

JT Johnson   May 28th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

McClellan has ruined himself. The democrats don't like him because they think he lied while in the White House, and the republicans don't want him because he can't be trusted to do his job within his own integrity.

D Frank   May 28th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

Just a quick comment on the latest Obama's faux pas regarding Auschwitz. This is not such a big deal after all it is just another incident of a politician over exaggerating.

It also reminds me that Obama is not anything special and he is just as likely to blow things out of proportion as Hillary Clinton or John McClain. But one thing that is different from the other 2 politicians is that they do not go around and preach "CHANGE" as he does saying that he does not want to play old style Washington politics.

This is the very thing that peeves me about him and why I have difficulty in supporting him as the Nominee. He is a BS'er. He plays the same game and he is dishonest about it. Bill Clinton is absolutely correct when he made suggestion that the race card was first used or played by the Obama Campaign.

Everyone seems to blame the Clintons but the Obama Campaign has been playing the Race Card flawlessly and CNN or other NEWS agencies do not say a thing.

But it seem s to be OK to speak or act with gender bias , oh yes that is not a problem because it is OK to pick on women. DOUBLE standards still exist and are alive and well in America.
SAD, VERY SAD

Nobody is comfortable doing crimes, like launching uncalled war. Sooner or later something human comes up even in hardcore Bush-like morons. Let's just not forget that all who voted for that war (including McCain and Hillary) must be swiped out of any government offices.

I find it interesting that I am not the only one to see that they have attacked the person (Scott McClellan) rather than the content of what he said. Until they do that, why should he retract his words and book. Maybe it is the idea that John Roberts mentioned; being hung out to dry can really change a person.

The White House says this is not the McClellan that they knew. Well is seems that the white house has consistent problems with acquiring the necessary knowledge for just about everything.

Is that a surprise since they did not get the necessary information on WMD in Iraq before they committed America to a war that seems to have no end.

So why is not knowing about McCellan and his opinions, any different??

Pistoff   May 28th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

The McLellan they knew bent over daily for Bush, but now that he's having trouble getting the blood stains off his hands he has a tinge of remorse. And .. it's hard to ignore the mint his book might make him. What a tool.

What happened to our country and election system? At times, I think I should pinch myself to confirm the fact that I am fully awake and witnessing what is going on, as it seems like a once very good play, which has gone bad. The founders of our Great Democracy would be sad today, or maybe they are looking down from above, some laughing, some crying, still others watching in shear amazement. Some might be saying, for all we did for that generation, they now do this? Are we to wander is some strange wilderness, aimlessly without direction. How happy I was in 1989 when the awful wall finally fell in Berlin and across eastern Europe. Now look at us now, we can't even count our own votes. Don't look to outside powers as destroyers of our Democracy, as we are doing a good enough job of it on our own. To this the sad label will be affixed, Made in America. We destroyed our own Democracy

Wake Up America   May 28th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Bayou Joe hit the nail on the head. Starting with the election in 1992 we have been gradually been tearing our country apart from within. Winning at all costs is the new motto in this country. The liberal extreme of the Dem party wanted the whitehouse back at any cost in 1992 and changed the rules of engagement. In 2008 the extreme right has jumped into the fray thinking all fair in War and Politics. Now with both of them pulling together it's just a matter of time. The mainstream media and political surrogates want you to believe that it's doomsday unless their chosen one is elected to save us from ourselves. In the process they believe it's ok rip apart the flesh of everything this country stands for. Most american's are followers and therefore are jumping into the fray without realizing they to are tearing our country to shreds. I'm not as worried about Iran or Al Queda as I am of the politician's and society that have chosen the extreme fringes of this country's political system. Our generation is weak, selfish and ignorant. God help our children 20 years from now. What an example we are setting for them. Maybe it's time for a new party. Maybe it's time we've told Washington enough is enough. Maybe it's time for term limits. Maybe it's time to say no more free rides for those who say they want to serve our country in the form of life time benefits when they don't contribute a dime. Maybe it time for us to quit accepting high taxes and nothing in return. The list goes on.

Phil in KC   May 28th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Why is it that every time someone exposes the sleaze they get tagged as "disgruntled". I think it's the American public that is disgruntled – all Bush has to do is look at his disapproval ratings. Bush is the fraud and the American public know it. So that can throw mud and every other piece of garbage on McClellan and it just isn't going to stick. The Bush administration has stunk since it stole the election.

Mr. McClellan, for one, has stopped drinking the purple kool aid which continues to flow through the pipes at 1600 Pennsylvannia Avenue. I've been saying this to family and friends for the past year and half. This administration and this President will go down as the worst in the history of this country.

Bob Stephens   May 28th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

This White House is full of and Liars and law breakers. It is refreshing to have someone that worked there actually come out and tell the truth to the American People. I wonder what John McSame is going to have to say now.

DJ, LA, CA   May 28th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Oh please...so did Scott McClellan have some sort of mutliple personality syndrome or is just fabricating all of this to sell books?

Scott McClellan is just ONE of several others very close to Bush that have made similar claims.

Nuwan Samaranayake   May 28th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

The problem with all the republican administrative staff and the congress is that they followed Bush just because he is the leader of the party and out of loyality. Even when they all knew his judgement was wrong regarding many things including Iraq war. Now these people after serving in this failed administration points the finger at it. There is no pride in doing that. No one should just follow a leader blindly knowing that leader is doing the wrong thing. I have no regard for Scott McClellan. He is one of them who followed a leader who has destroyed this nation. He can now say whatever he wants. Well that does not count. He should have done it a long time ago. It is like asking sympathy from the people after u do the wrong thing purposely.

We will see a lot of books like this or comments like this when the Bush leaves the White House in 2009. I am not simply interested those books written by traitors. Everyone serving in white house and republican congress who supports president are responsible for all this mess the people of America is going through. They should have acted conciously at the right time instead of criticizing after leaving the job. That is just a cowerdly act.

Although members of the Republican party, Pres. Bush and Sen. McCain are two very different people. The truth is that Sen. McCain opposed the president's execution of the Iraq War from the start, risking his presidential chances for advocating a strategy that has proven correct. In fact, had Sen. McCain's proposal been adopted earlier, in all likelihood the loss of life and treasure would have been greatly reduced.

Before he had his own show, "This Week with G.S." I would see him in the Dupont Cirlce area of DC and many times NOT ALONE. Liars* is the term. And Bill Clinton sent over 70 soldiers to there deaths and countless of somalis to there deaths for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.. Clinton stood by and watched Rwanda get raped, he allowed slobadon milsovic to murder hundreds of thousands of innocent albanians. Perhaps you're not a supporter of Bill Clinton, Perhaps you're homeboys with JFK?!? who's failed bay of pigs invasion cost lives? they weren't American so who cares right? but maybe we should blame him for the escalation of troops in Vietnam which end result would be 58,000 american kids. Or perhaps the democrat Truman?? he only killed 52,000 americans. Or FDR maybe the most heralded democratic president since its inception. He can be responsible for oooo say 10 million lives roughly?!?!? all hellbound eh?

Patrick, Lake Stevens, WA   May 28th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

It's ironic that this man, McClellan, would release a tell all book airing the dirty laundry of the White House now that he no longer works there – it's all for the purpose of creating publicity for his book and making money. If McClellan had these concerns back then, why did he not say something when he had the inclination? It would appear that he just played along. This, in my opinion, makes him just as deceitful and conniving as the Bush administration and in no way a hero as he help send fighting men and women to their deaths for the wrong cause. He shares the blame because he stood at that podium in the White House and gave press conferences supporting this war. Now McClellan wants to make money for telling what he really knew – what a shame!

MCCLELLAN KNEW ABOUT IT, LIED ABOUT IT, WAS BUSH'S MOUTHPIECE AND HAD NO MORALS, INTEGRITY OR CONSCIENCE.

THIS IS ALL ABOUT WHAT THE REPUBLICANS KNOW BEST! MONEY! AND BACKSTABBING! MCCLELLAN HAS A BOOK TO SELL AND WILL DO SO ANYWAY HE CAN. NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND, (REPUBLICANS EXCLUDED) BELIEVE FOR ONE MOMENT THAT MCCLELLAN WAS UNAWARE OF ANYTHING.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY, RIGHT SCOTTY BOY?

linda hemmingsen   May 28th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

scott is just telling the truth of the bush administration.Just like the military who came out and said bush was wrong they were retired. so scott waited till he could leave and is now speaking up and the bush people do what they always do they try to destroy a good man.and make it look like he is lying. well people aren't buying it. obama is like bush he is using the media the same way instead of your unpatriotic if you say anything negative about bush he uses the racism crutch. the media is already in bed with him so how much truth will we once again get if he is president. another whitewash?

Pretty pathetic when you have to back to a sole Grandparent to find a member of the military in your family. He was probably drafted since back then we had the draft. Today all of our sons and daughers served voluntarily. Why? Because they love our country and want to defend it from our enemies.
If Obama is elected we will become the Republic of Texas. You think you are paying a high price for oil, wait till we leave and see how much you pay for it then.

Let me see if I've got this straight: only if you lie about your sex life is it grounds for impeachment? I'd rather have a president who cheats on his wife than one who cheats on his country.

Melvin   May 28th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Right, because the Scott you knew was the person you lied to, and he accepted those lies. This Scott is the one who is standing up to the lies of the past and the Bush policies.

Congrats to you Scott, I hope your book sales go through the roof.

Chicago Architect   May 28th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

I believe this is just a concrete example and is an accurate account in depicting how bad this president has been in taking care of this country and its people. The apathetic nature of this president, his obvious "out of touch" relationship with the common citizen and their current plight, and his unwillingness to look at their basic needs as well as their future, truly illustrate how short sighted and cordoned off this man is to countries real needs. It shows how much he has gone to fabricate facts and information to promote his own agenda.

If half of the money he wasted on this war (and all his cronies who benefited from it) was used to help the needs of this country, (i.e. poverty, education, infrastructure, environment) the US would be better poised to help other needy countries around the world. This is not even mentioning all the goodwill the US would earn by truly acting as world leaders.

Its a real shame to realize that the actions and inaction of this president will greatly harm the future of my children and their children, mainly because of his lack of humanity, foresight, and simple common sense. Mr. Bush, may your legacy teach future generations that the good of the many truly outweigh the good of the few. The world will suffer because of your mistakes, but hopefully, God willing, new leaders, with foresight and the welfare of the people and true goodness in their hearts, will emerge this November.

I guess the question is, who is telling the truth? Did McClellan believe inthe Bush Administration and the information he provided to the American people? Or was he duped by the political puppet masters in the White House? It would appear that the individuals mentioned in McClellan are running to defend themselves, including Ms. Perino. Truth is so rare in politics that it is delightful to tell it. This is all about money.......money trumps everything.......and when money speaks the truth remains silent. Good luck Scott.

Could the Hillary supporters please post your rants in the appropriate blog. You lost the court battle in Florida. We over Hillary and we don't need you in November! Move along!

Jeff   May 28th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

I'm a little puzzled by all of this. Supposedly, Bush is an imbecile and/or complete idiot. Yet, he has outsmarted Kerry, HRC and others who voted for the Iraq war. How can he outsmart people but still be an idiot? Maybe Bush isn't some stupid after all. When Teddy Kennedy stands firm, you call it conviction, when Bush stands firm, you call it blind, stubborn and refusing to adapt. Make up your mind!

So this guy is trying to sell books. If he wrote a book that was positive about Bush, would he be getting the same coverage?

And a note to Peter in PA: Liar is spelled LIAR, not lier. I hope you were typing quickly and just missed it. Your point is still taken because I know when the name-calling starts, then the battle of the issue is over.

It is the beginning of the "cut and run". Those people who want to save face historically . Who went along on the ride because it was the only ride in town....and now are willing to tell all. Now there is no real fear or retribution because these guys are on their way out. They are over and so it will become ok for people who were scared into being part of the game.....can come forward and tell us all about it. I have a feeling this guy is just the beginning. Anyone who wants to save face will have to do the same or look like they were one of these guys.

With all these news from his own circles, how will Bush be remembered: No preseident ever lied to the American people as much as Bush did. It is sad that still about 30% of Americans approve his work....

Impeach Bush & Cheney   May 28th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

It is a shame that we cannot retroactively impeach a President and Vic President. Surely, in 5-10 years, the whole sordid truth of the Bush-Cheney white House years will surely be made public, and what Americans are likley to see if a government and its two mpst powerful leaders gone mad. Not only will these two republicans go downin history as the worst ever administration, they are as likely to be voted the most dishonest and most worthy of impeachment.

Ehsanul Haque   May 28th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

One does not need to write a book to say the current government invaded Iraq for no reason. I watched most debates in support and against invading Iraq prior America got in to it. I'm a very ordinary person and if I understood there was no any reason to invade the country and everything was manipulated just to do that to satisfy the purpose of some, 'Scott Mclellan' understood that and still he continued his job in the White House.
He now wrote the book to tell the truth behind the Invasion, to make some money (that's not bad), to cover him up for playing dis honest to mankind and so on.

"sorry for mistaking the name" in the previuos text.

Austin, TX grrl   May 28th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

I"d bet money Scott McClellan is planning to run for something in his (very liberal) hometown of Austin, Texas. A die-hard Republican couldn't get elected dogcatcher in Travis County. McClellan's just pandering to the home folks. Trust me, we've had to put up with this family for years.

Vietnam Veterans Against McCain   May 28th, 2008 12:40 pm ET

Kelby   May 28th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

Where is the Scott McClellan we knew?
I remember whatching this guy on CNN and thinking to myself, "How do you lie like this and then look at yourself in the mirror? Do you have to give up your soul to lie like that?
Now, everyone he used to work with is so surprised now that he is coming out. Maybe he can see the future and doesn't want to be tried for WAR CRIMES without getting his version of the truth out there on paper.
Remember Tenet? The guy from the CIA who said WMDs in Iraq was a slam dunk. See the connection? I would expect to see more Bush administation officials come out of the fog of lies and ignorance produced by this administration and try to save their souls by spilling their guts

Glenn   May 28th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

The truth is always the truth no matter when it is revealed or who reveals it. It could not be easy for Scott to bring the truth out at any time. I always disliked him for his protection and covering up for Bus when he was Press secretary. I can admire him for finally coming forward. Any crap you hear from Rove and the coconspirators just proves Scott is true. Coverups are always revealed in the long run. Politicians never learn that they come out best by telling the truth and not trying to spin or deflect or lie or coverup. Thanks Scott for coming forward.

Bush v. Clinton loyalty   May 28th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

McClellan is not saying anything new – what's new is how close in the inner circle this takes us to confirm what we all know to be true.

What is news is how much the Clintons will claim 'loyalty' over principal in their battle of the DNC. Hillary and Bill have invoked every boogieman to try to defame Obama and plead victim themselves. It is a travisty to themselves and the Party. The DNC will be vilified no matter what, but they stand on much firmer ground of maintaining the Party and not causing further splintering (caused by the Clintons), if they are consistent in past practice (however inelegant) and find a way to penalize the state parties, seat the delegates, and not over-enfranchize Hillary, because she's screamed the loudest. We'll see...

Bush has lost his loyalty because he lost the legitimacy to lead even with those who sided with him ideologically. The Clintons have done the same – let's see if the chickens come home to roost.

Kenneth M   May 28th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

THIS IS THE SAME THING GEORGE STEPHONOPOLIS DID TO THE CLINTONS. SOME HOW THE TRUTH ALWASY COMES OUT. SOMETIMES IT IS TOO LATE.

Ralph   May 28th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

I guess, if he never criticized the president and his administration in the past, we should imply he is a liar. Maybe he liked his job. As far as this not being the man they knew – they obvious lt didn't know him that well. I must say, a nicely coordinated attack on his credability. Very lawyerly indeed.

dwho   May 28th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

This is nothing strange. Most people are afraid of the president when his tenure is not over. This might have been in the case of McClellan. He could have been listened to when every American in this country were still favoring George W. Bush and his fear tactics of political inneuodo. Raising the bar of terrorism and lowering the bar. At the time Bush's bar of favoritism was high but people are getting to know the truth that is why McClellan is not stepping up to unvile the hidden treasures of the Bush's Administration.

John McCain is doing more harm to himself by wanting to continue such failed policies.

JP   May 28th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Scott McClellan... lied to by the White House (Rove, Cheney, et al)? What a shocker! Always check which way the breeze is blowing while in DC. That way, you can avoid the stench emanating from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

This only proves to ME Scott McClellan is telling 100% of the truth!

Bayou Joe   May 28th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

The year of the Traitor continues. Clinton is stabbed in the back by
Richardson. Rev. Wright takes it to Obama. Where is the loyalty?
Gone with all the rest of our core values. No wonder Obama is making such a headway politically. America is destined to be destroyed not by invasion but from our own enemies within the country.
THESE ARE INDEED THE LAST DAYS OF THE NEW ROMAN EMPIRE.

Vic   May 28th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

Why doesn't everyone come to the conclusion that McClellan needs the money and that's why he wrote such sensational . Those who say he doesn't sound like the "Scott we knew," are right. He was rather boring in his job, but "boring" doesn't sell.

Sadly, they are all going to get away with it. Every single one of these people should be thrown in jail for war crimes, crimes against humanity, gross misconduct, conspiracy, treason and anything else the courts can possibly make stick to their sliming, lying traitorous hides. I say if some sort of world court or UN court asks for Bush we hand him over on a silver platter with his cronies as side dishes. We have been betrayed.

New job for McClellan   May 28th, 2008 12:27 pm ET

McClellan should start flacking for Hillary Clinton – he has no moral scruples about working for liars and then profiting from it later. He can explain all about her non-linear delegate math and the sniper fire.

All those Hillary supporters saying "If not HIllary, I will vote for McCain", look what you will be voting for another 4 years. A vote for McCain is a vote for the liers Bush and Cheney. If these two criminals ever believe in God, they will rot in hell for killing 4000 US soldiers and hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi citizens.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   May 28th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

Bush and Cheney used the fear factor with all employees and if they didn't say yes Cheney would let his "attack dog" attorney lose on them. The White House comments sound exactly what is expected of an employer that has screwed you over then turns around and tells you they don't understand why you feel that way. Bush and Cheney aren't exempt from law or impeachment.

NickNas   May 28th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

All of this does is make me wonder out loud.

WHY IS THIS NOT SWORN TESTIMONY IN FRONT OF THE IMPEACHMENT COMMISSION???

So, once again, guilty until proven innocent ... all based on your perception of the look in McClellan's eyes at a single meeting.

Or, more accurately, he is saying what you want to hear, so therefore, it must be true. But then, anything else wouldn't sell books, would it?

Thank you for your opinion ... but then, like other things ... everybody has one.

Bush do the American public a favor and resign, you are a failure and a disgrace to the presidency. This buffoon has single handedly destroy this country, we are the laughing stock of the world. He is so out of touch with everyday people, Let see: High Food Prices, High Unemployment, Foreclosures in the thousands, All Time High Gas Prices, illegal and Unpopular War, Civil Rights Violations, The Economy in Shambles, and the list goes on and on and on, Mission accomplished indeed! She' s just business as usual and we DONT need that! McCain is the exact opposite of what we need to fix all the wrong bush inc has perpetrated.
