(CNN) – Rupert Murdoch offered a dire prediction Wednesday for John McCain's chances in the general election.

He will lose in a landslide, the News Corp. chairman said at a California conference, according to Reuters.

"You have got the Obama phenomenon, Murdoch said. "You have got, undoubtedly, a recession ... The average American is really getting hurt financially and that all bodes well for [Obama].

"You have probably the making of a complete phenomenon in this country," Murdoch continued, referring to what he thinks will be an overwhelming victory for the Democratic presidential candidate.

The News Corp. chairman, often viewed as a messenger for the Republican Party given his holdings include several media organizations with a conservative bent, also showered praise on the Illinois senator, calling him a "rock star."

While calling himself a friend of McCain, Murdoch said his lengthy stint in Congress has led the Arizona senator to make so many compromises that it is not clear where he stands on the major issues. He also called McCain "unpredictable," and questioned his knowledge on economic issues.

News Corp's holdings include Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post. The Post endorsed Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton earlier this year.

When the truth comes out on how Hillary lost and who was behind it all there will not be a Democrat party left.

Obama will have armies of people from all walks of live campaigning and working and voting. McCain just won't be able to stand against it.

Mr. Murdoch is a cut above the average thinker. The problem is that many do not think but depend on sound bites and that which gives their emotions a high. For the sake of all of us I do hope that his predictions come true.

DEMOCRATS UNITE   May 29th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

I hope you are right Mr Murdoch,by all accounts he should lose but I guess you can't really under estimate the american public. It is like this if most americans think that Washington will always be corrupt, and the american people will never matter then we are sunk. People have to want to have faith in their Government again and fight to bring about how things function in Washington; through the power of the vote. I really think Obama will be a president to keep the people informed and fight for policies that will make Americans feel involved in their Government and not just the washington insiders and special interest groups, rich americans; which has defined Washington for so many years. Hillary is much apart of how Washington functions today to make that difference. She has definitely proved that by wanting to change the rules to benefit her desires, no matter how wrong it is.

Please vote for change !!!!!!

Okay, what about letting the Republicans wage war on both Obama and Hillary. Whosoever is less bloodied by the Republicans will get the nomination. Even with this change in the rules to fit Hillary, she will not win.

Please indulge, just one more time: What about if we let Obama and Hillary spend an night in the White House, get someone to place a 3:00 am call, and see who gets to the phone FIRST! Even here, I believe Hillary will be beaten to the phone.

Like most Obama supporters, even Murdoch can not read the level of distaste and distrust millions of voters hold toward Obama. You're all underestimating the divide that Obama's lack of experience, knowledge, and arrogance have created within the legions of Democratic voters. They are not exaggerating when they say they will write in Hillary, stay at home, or vote for McCain come election day. Obama will not be able to overcome the lost number of votes to win in the GE. It's real and you'd all better believe it.

tj   May 29th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Murdoch is just trying to follow the money. Anyway through politics he thinks he can make money he sways. His Fox News helped us get Bush, and what a mess. Now he wants to jump on the Obama band wagon, what is he going have Sean Hannity do, start praising Obama and the democrats. Can't wait to see that.

bex   May 29th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

wow!! so untrue, americans will wake up by then and realize that Obama has accomplished absolutely nothing and is unqualified to be president. He has nothing to show, while Clinton and McCain have years of experience and accomplishments under their belts.

Obama is totally unprepared to run our country in this vital time. Period. Obama should thank Clinton for staying in so long; for one, she makes him look good and it has prevented him from being properly vetted since all the attention is on her. As Clinton moves further away from the spotlight, Obama will be getting more scrutiny and people are finally seeing him for the empty shell he is. And regardless of what he says, we KNOW THAT OBAMA WILL NOT GET US OUT OF IRAQ, and if he does it will be a total blunder that made our sacrifice pointless. He will also raise taxes on anyone making more than $30,000 a year and make us less competitive in a global economy.

Also, how is Obama more predictable than McCain when we don't even know anything about Obama other then his speeches and his track record, which when available, is often contrary to what he says (i.e. his stance on gay marriage, the gas tax holiday which he voted for 3 times in the state senate, the war in iraq in which his voting record is identical to clintinon's and mccain's, etc.). Murdoch's comments leave out independents and only focus on the party base's feelings toward their candidate; McCain is more toward the center than Obama and thankfully doesn't pander to the far right and makes decisions based on what's best for the country, not some lame ideology. If America is smart, McCain will, and should, win the GE over Obama. MURDOCH IS CLUELESS...

how can clinton supporters want this fight going to the convention? That would be disastrous and you guys know it. Imagine if the roles were reversed, would you want Obama to do what clinton is planning on doing?
I want you all to think how strong we will be if we all unite as one. The same ideals that we value have no chance of happening with Mccain president. It's time to put our differences aside and come together for a higher purpose. Like Obama says, we have a duty to leave this world a little bit better for the next generation. I have faith that any democrat will push the ideas that we hold sacred, whether it be Clinton or Obama. Since it is abundantly clear to even Gov Rendel and James Carville (the most loyal Clinton supporters out there) that Obama will be the nominee, I think other clinton supporters should take heed and fall in line. Lets do this.

Yes we can!

Obama has very little experience. He is an inept, weak, blow hard, who can talk a good talk. That's all he can do. He is charismatic, but that doesn't make a good president.

As for his supporters–it is my understanding they are the better educated–well, most of those who write in their comments can barely spell, much less put a sentence together!

And so it goes   May 29th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

I'm not sure why Hillary and some of her supporters keep sounding like a badly broken record about her being more electable. Hillary couldn't win against Obama, a candidate in her own party, who, a few short months ago was virtually an unknown. She has been soundly defeated across the board. Obama leads in every area (and no, you cannot discount the areas that don't swing your way, Hillary. You must use ALL the data). Hillary's campaign is in the red to the tune of almost 40 milion dollars (she has to pay that money she loaned herself back, you know). Her contributors have stopped sending money. There is little left of her campaign but a lot of noise and a smoking ruin. Even her closesst supporters admit she's at the end of her road. Rupert Murdock is only stating the obvious.

The Republicans have had 8 years to screw things up. After whining during the Bill Clinton years that they could do better if only they'd get the chance, they got their chance, and turned a national budget into a disaster, dragged us into two wars without any plan for victory, allowed fuel and food prices to skyrocket, while wages, and housing values went through the floor. People vote with their wallets. And their wallets are saying, 'Bye Bye Republican Party". Rupert is not an idiot. He sees the obvious.

Many don't care that Barack will be the nominee, they will continue to vote against him because of his tan. As a Barack supporter, and a democrat backer, I think Hillary put the democratic party at risk during the primary and I don't know if it will be able to recover but I sure will enjoy going for the ride.

Like how bush won in 2004 because of the gay marriage thing (fat lot of effort he put into it, by the way). He really pressed this issue, that he actually did not care about. The actual issue was the war in Iraq, and he hammered in on gay marriage until slightly more than half the country forgot all about Iraq.

GO OBAMA 008 (CNN) – Hillary Clinton has hinted that she is prepared to take her fight to fully seat Florida and Michigan all the way to the party's convention in late August, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says that's not going to happen.

JJ-Orlando   May 29th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

Well if us angry 2.7 million democrats do not get all their votes counted, and I mean not this 50/50 stuff, we will vote Mc Cain just in protest in the November election. What is 4 more years of republicans when your vote never counts to begin with. We can be heard one way or the other.

Wow, this must be music to the ears of Obama supporters.

Most of them will probably embrace Rupert Murdoch's prediction of an Obama victory in November and return to ranting and screaming like lunatics at Hillary Clinton, who is a great leader of the Democratic Party.

Maybe they just don't recognize political tactics when they see them. Why slam the lightweight in June when you can lull his supporters with a false sense of security and then slam the lightweight in October?

Obama fans give me a headache.

Words of Caution   May 29th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

Alex B. How can you spin this Murdoch comment? Nice try but Murdoch is one of the wealthiest men in the world and a ruthless businessman! He may be ruthless but he's not stupid! Obama is the reason, it's clear from the piece.

???   May 29th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

Even FOX can see that the writing is on the wall for the Republicans this year. Too bad we'll probably lose some good ones in the flood too.

Thank God for Barak Obama and the hope he brings this nation in its attempts to treat its own people better and improved the severly tarnished reputation of the GREAT USA around the world.

No more liars and cheats in the Whitehouse! She had her chance and blew it!

KMAN   May 29th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

He's right ... every day between now and November McThuselah loses more and more supporters to dementia, Alzheimers and various other natural causes ... where as Obama picks up potential support every time someone turns 18 in this country! If you think Obama drew a lot of new support during the democratic primaries ... wait until the general election campaign starts ... there will be a ground swell of new voters when given the choice of the failed past and a hope for the future. There was never a time in McThuselahs lifetime when he could have ever appealed to young people! Old men don't have great appeal in our current culture and his 'experience' is not a good card to play when he was wrong on Vietnam, wrong on Iraq and wrong when he flip-flopped on tax cuts for the wealthy!

Cindy,CA   May 29th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Hillary and McCain are the only ones that have a chance at the election. Obama has too many radical and questionable ties that will soon be known as soon as he clinches the nomination.

rachel   May 29th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

I think he's wrong and I wish people would stop trying to push obama on people. If they love him so much get poster of him in jeans and stick him on your wall and worship him leave us wise people alone.

THE MEDIA LET THE AMERICAN PUBLIC DOWN BEFORE THE INVASION OF IRAQ. NOW THEY ARE LETING US DOWN AGAIN BY NOT FOCUSING ON THE REAL ISSUE HERE!

1.In my opinion Dick Channey is the main culprit here; he pressured the CIA to come up with false and misleading rational to invade this country! Every time the CIA could not verify that Saddam Hussein had WMD’S, he told those involved that information was not good enough. Dick Channey should resign immediately from the Vice Presidency or Congress should start a formal investigation with hearings just like they did in the Water-Gate investigations.

2.The MEDIA has to remember here a crime was committed pure and simple. We have to remember that over 4000 Americans Solders have died unnecessarily in this conflict. Over 30,000 more have had there lives changed for ever with causalities.

3.Further John McCain, Hillary Clinton as well as the other members of Congress should apologize to the American people for there votes to allow this tragedy to happen. Those in Congress can redeem there creditability with formal hearings and pressuring Dick Channey to resign.

4.Those families that have lost loved ones in this war should compensated for the lost of there loved ones. Further, those that have suffered causalities should be receiving compensation also.

5.The MEDIA should have done substantive investigating pre-invasion of Iraq. Checked the information the White House putting out and verified the sources. The Media today has lost its way. Back in the 60’s, 70’s and even in the 80’s the MEDIA did not back down from White House pressure. Now they are easily intimidated by FOX News, Right Wingers and the current administration!

Nando, Florida   May 29th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

If we were not at war, McCain would win in a landslide.

When you are in a recession, the goal should be to cut government spending down and lower taxes to give people more money.

Obama's solution, let's spend $600 billion more per year and tax the crud out of everything.

And yet that is positive... God help this country, because Congress and the president wont' help or care.

He is just merely stating his opinion, in order to provide a "wakeup call" to the GOP.

Terry   May 29th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Good thing you're not betting money on this one Murdie... Or are you? Because you will lose big if Nobama is the nominee. Hillary can beat McCain. Nobama cannot...

NO HE CAN'T!

Hillary 08!

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah   May 29th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

McCain voted to send 4000 americans to there death

I have four important questions for Bush, McCain and the GOP!

1. Is Iran stronger or weaker since Bush’s invasions of Iraq?

2. Has Osama bin Laden been killed or captured since Bush’s invasion of Iraq?

3. Are we paying more for gas now or before Bush’s invasion of Iraq?

4. Is our economy better of now or before Bush’s invasion of Iraq?

5. Is the White Houses creditability better now or before Bush’s invasion of Iraq?

6. Is the budget deficit higher now or before Bush’s invasion of Iraq?

7. Is the Middle East more peaceful now or before Bush’s invasion of Iraq?

8. Do we have more American Solders dead or before Bush’s invasion of Iraq?

This WAR has cost us so much; it is unbelievable that damage that Bush administration has done to this nation. The saddest thing about this WAR most of the American cannot comprehend what has happen during the last seven years of this administration. Further, McCain wants to go down the same road! Go figure!

Liv   May 29th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

I think he's right no matter what you think of him.

McCain is old   May 29th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

I predict he will die wiggling from a stroke before November.

Janneth from WV   May 29th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

That is for the superdelegates to judge.

If I were the superdelegates, I would have ended this long ago. Ask the pollstars; you find out that the electability argument Hillary is claiming is because her supporters tell pollsters they won’t vote for Obama while Obama’s supporters agree to vote for Clinton if she were the nominee. Funny enough, she is encouraging this attitude.

So should the DNC reward her and her supporters for being disloyal to the party (only vote democrat if their candidate win) while punishing Obama and his supporters for being loyal (vote for any democratic candidate)?

Concerned Democrat   May 29th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Wow, this must be music to the ears of Obama supporters.

Most of them probably don't know who Rupert Murdoch is, so they'll embrace his prediction of an Obama victory in November and give him a pat on the back and then return to ranting and screaming like lunatics at Hillary Clinton, who is a great leader of the Democratic Party.

Obama fans give me a headache.

Maybe they are Republican plants intent on destroying the Democratic Party. They could do a better job of destroying the Democratic Party if they were Republican plants.

HILLARY CLINTON '08

Valerie - St. Louis, MO   May 29th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Another Repulican that comes to realize that their party is broken and cannot be fixed in this election. John McBush has wanted the presidency so badly for years, I just think he waited until he was too old to carry it through. This man is too old to even run again in 2012, so why elect him now?

sheep   May 29th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

wow something we all know except CLINTON ..who seems to think wining by a little or a landslide is in her hands . I'm so sick of listening to her tell us how to brush our teeth and comb our hair . And some people still are listening to her .

Every Wilson   May 29th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

I think Fox news owner is starting to see the light. His children are supporters and are fundraisers for the Barack Obama campaign, so I think it sounds like his conservative news media has failed him. Now its time to throw in the towel for the inevitable. Even though I do not trust his media, that was a brave thing to say. I still believe his media outfits, will spin Rev Wright 24/7 during the general election inspite of his declaration, which would cast a imprint of double speak on his words. I just wonder if he is speaking his mind or the facts as he see them?

Farrell, Houston, Tx   May 29th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Warren Buffet now Rupert Murdoch two of the worlds smartest and wealthiest economist supporting Obama. However, it didn't take the two of them for me to know Obama is the right choice and I don't have a college degree.

j   May 29th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

I'd be happy with that end result but I'm not sure that it's going to turn out to be true. For one thing, the Republicans haven't started producing all of their negative ads yet and since those have been a factor in the past, they can't be counted out. I expect the election to be close but I'm hoping that Obama will hold the majority of electoral delegates at the end of race.

John McCain's best outcome will be with Huckabee as VP and endorsing FairTax. And distancing himself from Bush. Barring such a scenario, McCain will be a TOAST!
