Dole is not happy with McClellan.
Dole is not happy with McClellan.

(CNN) – Bob Dole is furious with Scott McClellan's public criticisms of the Bush administration, telling the former White House Press Secretary in an e-mail Thursday he is a "miserable creature" who is "spurred on by greed."

"There are miserable creatures like you in every administration who don’t have the guts to speak up or quit if there are disagreements with the boss or colleagues," Dole wrote in the personal e-mail. "No, your type soaks up the benefits of power, revels in the limelight for years, then quits, and spurred on by greed, cashes in with a scathing critique."

Dole spokesman Michael Marshall confirmed the authenticity of the e-mail, first reported by Politico and obtained by CNN.

Dole, the former Senate Majority Leader and 1996 Republican presidential nominee, also tells McClellan he is likely looking to "clean up" as "the liberal anti-Bush press will promote your belated concerns with wild enthusiasm."

"When the money starts rolling in you should donate it to a worthy cause, something like, 'Biting The Hand That Fed Me,'" he wrote. "Another thought is to weasel your way back into the White House if a Democrat is elected. That would provide a good set up for a second book deal in a few years."

Dole also made clear he has no plans to read the book.

"I have no intention of reading your 'exposé' because if all these awful things were happening, and perhaps some may have been, you should have spoken up publicly like a man, or quit your cushy, high profile job," he wrote. "That would have taken integrity and courage but then you would have had credibility and your complaints could have been aired objectively."

"You're a hot ticket now but don't you, deep down, feel like a total ingrate?"

Bob Dole should realize that the media isn't ""Lliberal" and "Bush-hating", it's the American people who are. The media are just reflecting that.

Tim   May 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Mr. McClellan You did the correct thing. Don't even listen to these Republican creeps. The world already knows everything you have told us and you had the courage to tell us anyway. Hold your head High!! I personally are proud of you.

Darcy - Arkansas   May 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Bob Dole is wrong to down Mr McCellan for giving his version of the truth. Bob Dole can give his version of the truth also and we, the public will judge who and what we deem more honest.

You know how it is…GW Bush has been hurt… called out to be a liar… of immense preportions…. Now they get Dole who is retired or dying his hair someplace… and have him hit back… God will be honored to be in your presense Mr. Dole… Now do something for the people… By the way remember when you told the public that there was no health care crisis.. that the only thing was some people were not insured… You did nothing for the public except your ego…

Matthew   May 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

I agree with Dole and I'm now fan of George W. Bush or his administration. I highly doubt Scott McClellan had a recent epiphany. Quite the contrary, he served well over two years as the public face of the administration and publicly defended and reinforced its policies. If he truly felt as he says he does, he should have resigned much earlier than 2006 or not taken the position at all. So Dole is correct, he is a weasel who is looking to make a quick buck.

ISeeNothingWrongWithIt   May 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

DOLE YOU ARE THE "miserable creature" NOT Scott McClellan's WHAT IS WRONG WITH COMING OUT CLEAN. YOU REPUBLICANS ARE USED TO LYING AND YOU CALL LYING LOYALITY . I THINK MR. Scott McClellan MADE A BIG FAVAOUR FOR COMING OUT CLEAN AND EXPOSING THE BUSH ADMISTRATION SEPECIALY THE EVIL MAN KARL ROME. MAY GOD BLESS THIS MAN.

No big goverment   May 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

It is absolutely obvious that McClellan is taking the money when he can get it regardless of truth or fact. Big government is coming along with our freedoms being slowly taken from each one of us. Our enemies are at the door and no one seems to notice. Do you know who are candidates really are?? We are in trouble. Take of the blinders of Hope and Change America. Our founding fathers fought for freedom. We are letting it slip away to socialism.

AMW   May 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

HEY DOLE
IF YOU HAVE NOT READ HIS BOOK AND HAVE NO INTENTION OF READING HIS BOOK, YOU ARE NOT QUAIFIED TO COMMENT ON IT!
THE MORE YOU HANGER-ONERS OPEN YOUR MOUTHS, THE MORE FOOLISH YOU ALL SOUND.
SCOTT SIMPLY DOCUMENTED HIS THOUGHTS, AND LOW AND BEHOLD, 95% OF AMERICA AGREES WITH HIM.
YOU, ARI, DAN, CARL (???KARL), DICKY, RUMMY, CANDY—-JUST KEEP ON HANGING ON TO THE BUSH MACHINE IF THAT IS YOUR NEED. MOST OF US DON'T HAVE THAT NEUROTIC NEED.

gin   May 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Every time Republicans get to the white house, they have a war in their agenda. This cowboy attitude has destroyed so many lives: over 4 thousand deaths, suicides, and wounded . So many families in distress. Now we have a recession and they still believe they will win again to continue their destruction.
Meanwhile we have those angry feminists pushing a suicidal agenda on the other sides. Hopefully fairness will prevail.
So this book was necessary to just confirm our doubt about this useless and evil war and this government that cost us our economy and put us in so much misery.
Now Fox is trying to divert our attention toward the democrats with a priest business so we can forget about the McClellan' book.

Micks   May 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

I lost all respect for Bob Dole when he wouldn't denounce the obvious falsehoods of the Swift Boat Veterans (only one of which actually served with Kerry), even McCain had the decency to call them out for what they were.

Bob Dole is a miserable creature, if it weren't for the the travesty of the Bush administration, I would say I'm glad he never became president, but even a scoundrel like Dole would have been prefereable to the Bush. As for McClellan, better late than never I guess, but really, is he saying anything that wasn't already blatantly obvious?

James   May 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

That reminds me what Obama have been and will be: a cheating cheap politician, at best! What "CHANGE"!

Larry Flynt   May 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

I'll pay top dolar for a picture of McClellan, Keith Overnow, Chris Matthews, Jonathan Alter, Richard Wolfe, Dana Millbank, Little Danny Abrams and John Dean, in a circle jerk.

Jeremy   May 30th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Hmmmm. What is more disgusting: betraying your boss for lying to you and then asking you to propagate falsehoods in front of the entire nation, are creating the lie in the first place and killing thousands of American soldiers and hundreds of thousands Iraqis? I can see how someone like bob dole would consider loyalty to a lier to be more substantive than loyalty to the American people. Thank G-d Clinton romped this spineless thug in 1996.

Gerry De Leon   May 30th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Dole was right. McLellan was a snake who bit the hands that fed him.

G   May 30th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

They make it sound like he got a millions of dollars for this book. If anything we should be thanking McClellan for finally telling the public what we all already knew but has now been confirm. People thought that those who wrote about watergate were also disloyal. So let me get this straight the government can be corrupt do whatever it wants but if we did the same thing we would get the book thrown at us. This is stupid if they did something wrong we have a right to know. And just like they like to condem everyone for their crimes they should also get the same treatment.

Kyle   May 30th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

People seem to forget that ANYONE who spoke out against the presidents policy was considered unpatriotic. It makes sense that he was afraid to speak at the time.

Margaret   May 30th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

How interesting that McClellan's critics don't dispute the CONTENT of the book, only that (in their estimation) he shouldn't have said it. Guess they're forgetting that folks in government are supposed to be working for us, and when "The People" have been lied to, we have every right to know about it. And as for Scotty being a little late to 'fess up, better late than never. Maybe he can donate his royalties to medical aid for Iraqi children or to PTSD care for U.S. vets. Thank you, Mr. McClellan, for coming forward with your inside perspective.

Not pertaining to this article, but rather a reminder to readers out there that there are a lot of Republicans acting as Hillary supporters and Obama haters right now, hoping to skew the nominee election.

We're each responsible for reconciling our own confusion.

DOnt 'be swayed by fear tactics. Don't be swayed by fear at all.

Many in the Republican party are running scared. Don't follow their lead.

"When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change."

I have to comment on Ferrero's blog! I just wanted to say

AMEN SISTER!

Obama and his campaign are the reason our party is so devided. When Obama says, "Our time has come" he's talking about black americans. When he talks about "Change", he's talking about the first black president. When he's talking about "Yes We Can!" he is talking to the black Americans. He's trying to sound like MLK. He comes from a racist, anti-American church.

It's all right there under your noses people.

Doug Gulfport, FL   May 30th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

He sounds like a spoiled child, doesn't he?
The Bushies are reverting to name calling because the truth about the their administration has been told. Most of us suspected this truth, however. Scott McClellan has guts, and I admire him.
Dole, it's time to check in to the nursing home. You are insignificant and your opinion does not matter.

boered1   May 30th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Yep attack the messanger not the message. my question to Dole is if you are so strong a supporter of integrity why are you not standing up for the INTEGRITY OF OUR COUNTRY over the intergitry of your party. you, bush and hillary all cut from the same cloth to hell with the rest we have to support our friends even if it destroyes our party or our country.

You and your loyalist league disgust me far worse than this little twerp who at least, finally, had the courage to stand up and say I cannot accept the lies I told before.

No Doll   May 30th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Mr. Dole, one has just to look at your face and record to find out who is a true miserable creature…. What is wrong in admitting that Bush had failed policies and misled the American people?

Dayo from New York City   May 30th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Well if McClellan betrayed his party for the love of his country that's fine with me. He did the right thing.

xddy4u   May 30th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

When Mr. McClellan was lyiing through his teeth on behalf of Bush at the News gatherings, he was a "good ole boy". Now when he tells the truth about Bush, he's a rotten SOB. If McClellan is a monster you Republicans made him one. Remember monsters always kills it creator.

Kevin - Indiana   May 30th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

McClellan doesn't owe Bush anything. He helped spread disinformation for the administration, destroying his credibility in the process. If anything, Bush owes McClellan an apology. If he is unhappy, he has every right to be unhappy about being used, dishonestly.

What if his book is the truth? Who cres if he makes money on it? Who cares if he didn't blow the whistle? How many politicians and those around them do anyway. The way the Bush Administration was treating and is still treating people, no wonder he kept his mouth shut.

Sam7   May 30th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Since Bob Dole is furious, Mr. McClellan must be telling the truth…

JJ   May 30th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Is it me or is it that all the people who are against Scott are just calling him names and not coming out to say there is no truth to wha he' s saying? Did I miss something??

I think it's hilarious that no one is not sayiing there is no truth to this book. Look, stop calling the man out and talk about whether there is or isn't any validity to what is being told.

Rick in California   May 30th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

I hear all these names being spewed at McClellan. I don't hear one name though. Liar. I wonder why that is?

Larry Jordan   May 30th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Typical Bob Dole…criticizing a book he will never read and an author he sees as disloyal. Of course "loyalty " to BD is not what it is to normal people under the age of 100! Dole, don't forget was the only human being we saw (and disgustingly heard) sobbing at Richard Nixon's funeral, and that includes Nixon's entire family.
Also keep in mind how Dole gave Newt Gingrich ( that's GAVE) a million bucks to pay fines for unethical behavior and retired from the Senate a very rich man, having come there with little more than the shirt on his back.
It's either egregious hypocrisy or the hair dye has finally reached Dole's brain!

jsm63   May 30th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Granted, Scott McClellan should have come out earlier, but it is Bob Dole, despite his many honorable years of service to his country, that is showing a lack of courage and character. Sen. Dole is trying to be the good "party man," supporting its leadership and direction unconditionally - it is unfortunate that supporting his party and the country have become mutually exclusive. I have been Republican most of my life, but will be voting Democratic in November because the Republican party at large has degenerated into a corrupt, self-serviing, war-mongering, incompetent entity seemingly bent on running our country into the ground. Regardless on one's ideology, the U.S. as a whole is materially worse off than it was eight years ago by almost every conceivable measure (the exception being financial gain for those in the top couple percent in terms of wealth), and are on many future paths both domestically and internationally that will lead to further U.S. decline in influence and capability.

Sen. Dole would be much better off spending his energies calling the "miserable creatures" that are the current Republican leadership on the carpet for the disservice that have done this country - the one they all swore they would unswervingly serve.

I am so ashamed of this administration!!. From the top (president) to the lowest ranks and everyone in between. This primary year has been conducted like a circus. The good are being attacked and the bad are being lauded. Is it any wonder the world looks at us as a bunch of idiots. Obama is the only bright spot in this whole fiasco. Bring it on and make America strong again. Can we please vote all of congress, senate, judges and media now in power.

Thank you Obama for running in this primary. You are a life and country saver.

Grant   May 30th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

I'm kinda surprised Dole is backing Bush so much on this. McKellan's job is spinning the presidential agenda, regardless of his personal feelings. The counter response from Dole and others is purposefully simplistic - "doesn't have the guts" or "should have said something". Yeah, and we all have seen how responsive the ever flexible Bush Administration is to the ideas of others. McKellan's claims are more logs on the fire of the most inept and shameful president in history.

Anony-mouse   May 30th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

I note how, instead of focusing on whether the allegations are true or not, the Republicans simply 'shoot the messenger'. Hasn't this been the MO of this party for the past 10 years or more? Will the American public fall for the distraction? I think they will, sadly enough…

The thing is, if McClellan did "have the guts to speak up" and in the middle of a press conference announced he was resigning because he refused to sputter the lies of the delusional president any more, all these same party-line hacks would still be trashing him and the truth he speaks. McClellan's courage may not have been punctual, but at least he has the courage to denounce this fraudulent administration which is something the morally bankrupt Greedy Old Perverts of the GOP seem unwilling to do.

harold   May 30th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Its an Honor to add a comment on this ole man Dole who I thought was outa it long ago.. But he has been selected as the hit man in the Mcclellen case…notice how he sidesteped every issue about the War… Of course he did… As a hit man you know all the tricks…Dole is a governemnt operator completely…he knows how to get down dirty… He thinks so highly of himself.. I imagaine God is going to be honored to be in the presence of Dole when he sees him soon….. What a creep Dole is … out for his ego again… Dye your hair something else dude…

Spoken like a REAL republican   May 30th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

So… Bob Dole has no intention of reading McClellan's "exposé" because he didn't have the guts to speak up earlier? For a man in his 80s, Dole argues with the petulance of a fifth grader.

Mr. Dole, what difference does it make? No one is arguing that McClellan isn't a gutless snake, but can't we all benefit from the knowledge he is offering? Whether you believe it or not, whether you agree with it or not, how can it possibly hurt you or anyone else by just taking a look at it? It is what it is, the inferences you make from it AFTER reading it, is your opinion. Inferences you make BEFORE reading it is nothing short of just plain ignorance.

doc   May 30th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Jesus Bob, I had to read this article twice. Just to make sure you were talking about S.M. instead of George Bush. Your peoples blind faith in this administration has lead to the current sad state of this country. Lets not question weather his statments are factual lets just attack him. this is why we need to "CHANGE" Washington.

Bill Stearns   May 30th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

What a joke this is turning out to be. Who's going to write the next book - Laura Bush? This president is going out with his pants down and with even less dignity that when Nixon slithered off into the sunset.

The truth of the matter is that there is simply no one outside of your average disconnected-from-reality, frothing-at-the-mouth right-wingnut (i.e. your typcial Rush Limbaugh or Weekly Standard fan) who sides with this disgrace of an administration any longer. There is no "there" there as far as even a shred of credibility goes.

Attack the messenger - that's all the neonuts have been able to do for years now. Oh yeah, and fight the good fight against donut companies that "support" terrorism. Woohoo!

-Proud to be an American.

Steve   May 30th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

While I can definately see Bob Dole's point of view, and agree that it would have been more honorable to speak up at the time, I think that McClellan did the right thing by speaking out. It is better to tell the truth years after lying, than to never tell it at all. That is a great part of why our nation is in so much trouble right now. Republicans believe that loyalty to fellow Republicans is more important than loyalty to the truth. That kind of loyalty our country can do without!
I do agree with Dole that McClellan should donate the proceeds of this book to something if he really did write it with the purpose of living up to his Christian principles. People shouldn't get paid for going to the confessional to clear their conscience.

Really?   May 30th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

So, his loyalty should be to the party and not the country or the truth or what is right? Nice values Bob!

Come on give me a break. This is the good ole' USA…I will screw you before you screw me. Look what happened to Valeri when her husband spoke out against Cheney and Bush with their LIES. Money makes the world go around…

May 30th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

In Dole's defense…I can't stand looking at the little bug. He is so pasty.

I have no issues with McClellan exposing the administration if it is the truth, but the fact that he is looking to make money off of it makes me suspicious if it is the whole truth. If he has such a conscience, he is scum for waiting until it was all over before blowing the whistle on it.

Terry   May 30th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

apparently this mcclellan is a democrat in his nasty heart of hearts.

Rene D, Bel Air, MD   May 30th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Get off it, Dole. Why in heck didn't YOU and yours speak up, when you had so many chances AND the cover of the Senate.

We should all be grateful for these whistle-blowers. There is nothing to be ashamed of here, except maybe that he should have been more aware of the outrageous, unacceptable level of games-playing by Rove, Cheney, Libby….I could clearly understand why it all seemed too unbelievable at the time, to even consider that our highest office in the land could be in any way corrupt, run by a gang of thugs.

Thank you, Mr. McClelland, from a sane America.

Roger   May 30th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

How ironic! I have thinking the same thing about Bush for almost 8 years!

Tim in NC   May 30th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

You know, maybe if this was the first book to come out from a former Bush-insider to blast the Bush administration, maybe I'd have some doubts about its credibility…

Since its the… 6th, 7th to come out singing the same song, Dole can take his criticisms and shove them up his ancient, arthritic arse!

John H, Los Angeles   May 30th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

"I'm Bob Dole, and Bob Dole would never read such a thing" Another shoot the messenger criticising the Commander in Chief. McClellan's motives may be a little suspect, but he has the right to do it. I think Americans really need to look at how Republicans are becoming more fascist like if anyone dares criticizes the government.

olorinstaff   May 30th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

looks like the bush destroy your enemies machine got to Bob Dole. To quick to trash a book he never plans on reading
Makes me wonder how many bills he acctualy read before voting on them

Scott only spoke out too late and when there was money to be made and no political risk.

This man misread Bush and he now supports Obama.

What does that tell you?

beverly   May 30th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Bob dole what hole did you crawl out of, back from the dead i see the pot calling the kettle black how hyprocritical. Every one knows the bush admininstration did not have just cause to invade iraq. Mcclellan was wrong for not exposing what he knew sooner, every of one them should be brought up on war crime ,and serve year upon years in prison.

Mecry Me   May 30th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

How is it that Obama talks about hope and change and draws such vehement hatred from people? Why do you hate this guy so much? What's at the root of your dislike? What exactly has he done to deserve this negative backlash when he's been so positive? Is it that he's beaten your candidate? Or are you mad that Hillary beat herself? Is it that a black man had the audacity to win? Why are you stuck on the petty issues of race and sex? What's sad is that the negativity and division actually reflects the negativity and division of much of the country. Obama '08!

matt   May 30th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Dear CNN

The first comment on this thread is about McCain and Veteran's ire towards McCain's vote on the GI Bill. This article is about Scott McClellan and Bob Dole. Why can't you force your moderators to stay on topic. It's not like there aren't six thousand stories about McCain, Veterans, the Iraq War, Barack Obama and Congress on the politics page alone.

Also can the people who comment in all-caps be banned? It's f—— annoying.

I respect my elders, but these bunch, makes us in the 40s, look like babys.. they act worse than a person with dementia, speech, bipolar and multiple disorders, but worse is their hate and their unwillingness to accept age has caught with them, and accept it gratefully, (all odl politicians, caught in the dark ages.)
they are so angry the rest of the us are choosing for others who can see beyond their mistakes…

After reading some of these comments, I'm pretty convinced that HRC supporters are not Democrats, but Republicans. Why else would they use the Scott McClellan story as an opportunity to beat up on Obama - who has absolutely nothing to do with this? Write-in all you want, but know that you'll be responsible for dealing with another four years of Republican lies and probably a war in Iran. It's just irresponsible.

Mark   May 30th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

At least he realized his mistakes and had the gut to let the public know the truth behind the Bush Administration's atrocities throughout the world.

I'm not sure whether he could change anything by resigning the post which he eventually did. He certainly was not a policy make rather a policy seller.

We just never come out and say such a thing. CONGRATS DEMS for OBAMA and for the slapping the Bush administration are recieving….it's far far far due….and more will come. Don't make it easy for them to leave…make them all feel very uncorftable and don't alow them to return to normal live again for how they have run this country.

matt   May 30th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

I have to quibble with Dole and other members of the Republican part on this one. McClellan's publisher is notorious for giving unusually low advances. There's a story in Salon.com by an author on the same publisher, and they confirmed this. Essentially, McClellan's advance was below 100,000. That's not enough to legitimize the claim that this is powered by greed.

I also have to ask McClellan why he didn't quit in protest. Ford's Press Secretary did so after the Nixon pardon.

R1100RT in VA   May 30th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Thank goodness Dole never became president! He's always been a partisan, low-blow hatchet-man and his temper is almost as scary as McCain's!

MizuInOz   May 30th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Reality is that McCellan was writing this book for quite a while. Are people, including Bob Dole, really so delusional to think that he just wrote this publication. It has been delayed several times.

Why is it so difficult to believe that Scott was caught up in the process and when finally disillusioned, did resign. Which he did.

Obviously the White House - The President, Vice-President and all the staff are squeaky clean. All made of the same teflon that Monica's ex-boyfriend is made of. These are the people who lied about Iraq, who have been accused as the most secretive administration since Nixon and you are throwing mud at the messenger? Lisa (12:38), you are so spot on!!!

JohnLee   May 30th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Bob Dole - VP for 2008 McCain?

Big Tex   May 30th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Okay, if anyone said that Scott is a greedy little Republican, please raise your hands…. Oh my bad, Bob, I forgot you can't…..

Allan   May 30th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Moderators, I am confused.

You are allowing comments to be posted to this story which have nothing to do with the content of the story but instead bash Obama and praise Hillary.

Meanwhile, I provided a good, and relevant, response to your Geraldine Ferraro story but you chose not to approve it.

I think we have a Clintonista under deep cover at CNN.com.

Sandy   May 30th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Shut up, Dole. You're bashing the messenger because you know you can't bash the message.

You and the whole Republican Machine are corrupt, and you know it. You're just ticked off that more evidence of this is now in the open. You're not fooling anyone.

Dina   May 30th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

I like the comment that the American people paid McClellan's salary, not Bush. Wish more Republicans would remember that. But McClellan was a wimp not to take a stand back when he was spewing what was even then, such obvious lies. If more prominent people had stood up, and if more average Americans had stood up– we wouldn't be in the mess we are now.

Michael   May 30th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Oh get over it Bob Dole, you are just hacked off because your buddy Bush got his butt handed to him over the Iraq war. Most if not all Americans knew Bush was lying about the war to begin with, the silly, sorry you know what should be impeached. They will impeach a sitting President for lying about sex but not for lying about the reasons to go to war. This should show everyone what Clinton or Obama is in for should one of them get elected, sad isn’t it.

What choice do we have?   May 30th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

It's sad… What choice do we have now? Confirmative action president or one more republican (big corps) term? No more decent people left in America?

I agree with Dole   May 30th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

The miserable, double-talking, belatedly truth telling Scott should have stood up and said something when it mattered.

Truth is, Scotty chose Bush, and now he is choosing Obama.

He is obviously a poor judge of presidential material- or… he want to write another tell-all book in 5 years.

Mike   May 30th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

I don't trust this McClellan guy and yes he should have stood up when things were tough BEFORE thousands of people died in Iraq. HOWEVER, what he said has been shown through reality and many other sources to be at the very least partially true so lets focus on the truth here!

What do you expect republicans and Bush to say…Scott is right? Of course they're going to plead innocence even though every sane person can see the result of the many many WMDs that we found in Iraq. Yes…do you remember those WMDs we went to war and your son, daughter, uncle, auntie, cousin died for???

WArt   May 30th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

As I stated on another post, if McClellan is lying, such a miserable little creature, why don't Bush and his cronies file a lawsuit. I'm sure Mr. McClellan has documented proof, or else he would not have put himself out on a limb like that.

right source   May 30th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Dole is the one who is a miserable creature. How dare he call someone out of their name. Just because he was bold enough to come out with the truth. A lot more will be uncover in the White House.

Obama is the One   May 30th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Since when did we start caring what Bob Dole thought again???

Republicans are a disastrous cancer on our country… malignant in the speech and policies. Thank God McClellan spoke out against this wicked administration and told the truth about the utter manipulation of Americans and the peoples of the world. This administration has cost us so many thousands of lives… so many thousands of innocent lives.

And, one life is enough to have great cause for looking down upon ANYONE, including the President. This admnistration represents death. As kthe families of dead soldiers!

Al Seago   May 30th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

In 1945, in combat in Italy, U.S. Army Captain Bob Dole had the courage to take a stand, and he suffered permanent disability as a result. In 2008, in an e-mail to Scott McClellan, retiree Bob Dole showed that same courage to take a stand.

We should have more politicians — more citizens — like Bob Dole.

lung doctor   May 30th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Bob Dole can rant and rave, but why didn't Colin Powell walk out on the administration after he was taken advantage of during his UN address leading up to the Iraq war?

Sarge in Florida   May 30th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Dole is just much as an IDIOT as Bush and McCain are. I'm just upset that McClellan waited to speak about this administration intil his book went on sale. I watched McClellan many times giving a press story, and I knew then that he was covering up for the Bush administration. I can smell a LIE a mile away. I hope that congress will read his book and go after the GUILTY parties who deceived American with LIES. Time to really enforce congressional subpoenas against Karl Rove, Libby. Harriet Miers, Cheney, Bush and Tenet. McCain is such a flip flopper that he makes John Kerry look like the pope. Why doesn't CNN play back the interview tapes that they have on McCain from two years ago which now he is denying these stories? This comment will probably not get posted. Tell me CNN why???????

ouch   May 30th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Yknow, I'm not a big republican, and I absolutely loathe George Bush, and have loathed him from Day One.

But Dole is right. If this guy felt so strongly about it, he should have just gone to the press straight away and told the truth - before this war got even more out of hand. Now, had McClennan pulled a "Stephen Colbert", and just started napalming the administration right from the Press Corps Podium, live on CNN….

THEN that'd be pretty spectacular.

Scott was previously PRO Bush   May 30th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Please post my anti-Obama, pro-Hillary opinion

Scott was for Bush- now he is for Obama.

Can you trust his ability to discern a candidate's TRUE nature?

Hillary needs to take it to the convention. She has more delegates than all the white male candidates of the past- like Ted Kennedy- who took it to the convention.

This is her RIGHT, under the rules of the democratic party.

Why are we pushing the woman out early, so that we can hand the nomination to the black man? We allowed all the previous white male competitors their right to campaign. Why is the party and the media bashing Clinton? Afraid that Obama can't cut it in NOV so knock Hillary out to give him an edge?

Won't work- just alienating the HRC supporters- the 17-20 million of them.

Loyal to Democrats forever   May 30th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Good riddance Scott!

I think he was a wolf in sheep's clothing. I worked with someone like that - someone who would smile in your face right before they stabbed you in the back. I wouldn't be surprised if all the information in the book is either lies or embellishments of the truth. He sure is cozying up to liberals real quick!

Good luck Scott, I hope you make tons of money on your book since that's obviously more important to you than the truth.

Larry Kincaid   May 30th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Dole sounds like the miserable creature to me.

Jennifer in Minneapolis   May 30th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Has Dole re-joined the 8th grade or something?

He hasn't even read the book and has probably never met McClellan - why does his opinion even mean anything?

I also noticed that he attacks the man, but not the message. None of McClellan's critics have been able to point to anything in the book and refute it with facts of their own. Even when specifically pressed to do so. That hardly gives their words any weight.

arc   May 30th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Bush and Cheney should be impeached for their High Crimes and Misdemeanors while in office. The American media, for the most part, does not report civilian casualties in Iraq. Foreign media sources have estimated the total deaths of Iraqi women, children and other non-combatants to be well over a half-million lives. Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld and others would be brought before The Hague for Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide if they weren't American. These are the people who Bob Dole supports?

Debby   May 30th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

I wonder how much is truth in the book and how much is exageration. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. McClellan might have his 2 min. of fame now but pay the price after.

karen   May 30th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

McClellan is a true American!!! Seems he cares enough to tell the truth! I want someone in Washington that will be open and tell the truth and is not tied to Washington lobbiests or insiders. Go Obama!!! Seems like some of the really honest republicans are coming over to Obama's camp–amazing–honesty in Washington and someone who might really care about the USA!!

The real tratior to this country sits in the white house every day. Him and his cronnies have sat there and raped this country of its soul, and its future, while they laugh thier way to the bank. Someone please tell the truth about Bush, and the band of liars he has working for him. Just look at all the pay-off jobs anyone who has left him , and keep thier mouth shut get. It is so clear how he works. This man should be given prais for his honesty. It may be to little to late, but he is trying. Thank God its only six more months.

What Bob Dole is really saying to Scott McClellan is - you broke the 11th commandment, Scott. "Thou shalt not speak unkindly about a fellow Republican" - even when that fellow Republican wrongfully takes his country to war!

Wow, that is the most life Dole has shown in years. It is easy to say McClellan should have spoken up earlier while he was at the White House, but don't you think he would have been squashed in discredited back then?
The furor over this book seems to correlate with the level of truth of its contents.

This thread leaves no doubt that we put more money into the penal system in this country than our schools. Is it too much to ask that the morons who leave their irrelevant little comments on this site use proper grammer?

Soupy   May 30th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with Dole on this one.

The Misanthrope   May 30th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Bob Dole the paragon of integrity sold out his dignity to promote Viagra. The hypocrisy of the right and humans in general never ceases to amaze me.

Dusacre   May 30th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Mr. Dole,

Are you now the champion of integrity and clean politics?
Don't you know deep down that as a Christian calling any human "miserable creatures” is calling God miserable creator? As you judge so you will be judged. Isn't it written in the gospel?

Larry Kincaid   May 30th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Would Dole be happier if McClellan continued to shill for radical right-wing America-haters that have run the country for the past 8 years?

Better late than never to tell the truth, which we all know to BE the truth. The long list of former loyal Bushies turned deserters is getting even longer…hard to believe.

Dan   May 30th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Okay, McClellean is a miserable creature and disgruntled, but none of that detracts one iotum from the truth of his too long suppressed critiques of the Bushies. There is a loyalty higher than to this bungling, lying administration, and Scott has finally demonstrated this higher loyalty, namely, to the American citizens. Better late than never, I say.

Mark Webb   May 30th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Scott McClellan to Bob Dole : YOU TOO! Thank you.

Right On BOB   May 30th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Good for Bob Dole.

Major Michael in Lorton, Virginia   May 30th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Times are changing Bob Dole……..and believe me McClellan is not first nor is he the last. When money speaks, the truth remains silent.

lyn-nj   May 30th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Dole is soo soo RIGHT!

Truth Hurts   May 30th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

He knew what he will face. But he decided to obey his heart and his ethics…
He is a brave man and I respect his courage
Truth sometimes hurt and anger those who did not get used to it
Sorry Bob
