McCain admits mistake in using Petraeus picture for fundraising

A fundraising e-mail sent to McCain supporters Thursday.
A fundraising e-mail sent to McCain supporters Thursday.

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (CNN) - John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee for president, said he was wrong to use an image of Gen. David Petraeus in fundraising material, and it "will not happen again."

His admission came hours after the Barack Obama campaign criticized an e-mail showing McCain shaking hands with the general who has been commanding U.S forces in Iraq.

It was not the first time McCain had used the picture of himself with Petraeus; it appeared on the candidate's website for several days in April before being taken down.

McCain has been hammering Obama for days over the length of time been since the Democratic front-runner last visited Iraq, mentioning Friday it was "873 days."

"I have visited Iraq on many occasions because I think the most vital decision that any president of the United States can make has got to be about the security of this nation and the lives of the young Americans who are serving," McCain said in an e-mail to supporters sent Thursday afternoon.

Adm. Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently took the unusual step of admonishing all members of the military to stay out of politics as the presidential campaign heats up.

Is this sort of thing we might be surprised about? But since "things":
are going so well in Iraq, this must be just on of "those" mistakes.

Fact:Mccain is an American hero for having endured so much for this country. But should'nt we be the ones to determine the quality of his leadership?...he voted for the war..bad decision..He most recently proposed a senseless gas tax holliday....bad decision....and agin did no want the GI bill extendended...another bad decision.Thant makes me wanna dig ino Mccain's resume. the Leadership that he claims to have in national security should be identifiable otherwise, i will conclude he has non that is relevant. Leadership and experience go hand in hand and they have one thing in common: they are like cholesterol. You have good cholesterol and bad cholesterol.

What disturbs me is that the press seem to be giving McCain a largely free ride. I am guessing its because the Obama vs Clinton drama is more interesting at this point so he gets largely ignored?.. or maybe its because we have had it drilled into us to show respect for our elders?? Whatever it is – he doesn't seem to be jumped on for his flip flopping nor his "misstatements".

I am in no way a supporter of John McSane. But I am much happier to have him taking shots at Barack, then burnt-out Hillary. Ahhh yes folks. I believe the General Election has begun......

Now if we could just get this minor technicality called the Democratic primary out of way.

John McCain's presidency will not be a third Bush term. That argument is tired and false. Anti-torture, pro-environment, internationalist, moderate republican, pro-reform in Congress that will benefit both parties, a moderate sensible position on immigration, a man of faith but not a nut– all descriptions of John McCain.

Shame on you who are goo-goo eyed for Obama. You follow a phantom.

Well Sen. Obama has been to Iraq once and I am surprised he has even been there at all. listen..there is really no point visiting the fortified green zone of bagdad several times and try to claim that it is reflective of what goes on in the rest of the country. Violence level has gone down, but American troops get killed every day. it is a war zone and it is not safe. now if McCain wants to visit Iraq 20 more times , its his call. i wouldn't go to Iraq for no reason whatsoever. peace.

You call them 'Moronic Clitonistas', which is not quite (but almost) as colorful as my favorite, 'Radical Hillary Fundamentalists'.

I meant "Clintonistas" but what I previously typed works too! Especially with regard to all those crotchety old women who are voting for a woman, regardless of her pedigree, just to vote for a woman. Now don't get me wrong ladies, I love women, just not Hillary.

Has anyone seen McCain's commercial? Not running for president, but running for "Commander in Chief". Frighteningly bizzare and the sign of a man obsessed with all things military to the degree that he isn't even interested in being president. I commend his military service, but the man's post-military service repeatedly suggests that he needs psychiatric help...understandable, certainly. But not a man to have his eager war-obsessed finger on the button.

McCain is such a fraud. Can you think of a better person to run for the republicans? He's waste. He is on his last political legs (age) and they won't miss him when he goes away. Can you see the big republican guns wringing their hands knowing they have a "disposable candidate"?

WAR IS ALL THIS OLD COOT KNOWS.THAT IS THE REASON HE WOULD LIKE FOR US TO BE IN A WAR FOR 100 YEARS BECAUSE BY THAT TIME HE'LL BE DEAD AND WOULD HAVE SERVED HIS TIME AS PRESIDENT.MCCAIN THERE IS MORE TO LIFE THAN WAR.SO YOU SHOULD GET A LIFE THAT INCLUDES LIVING LIFE.

Before the Obama camp complained, they tried to find a similare photo of Obama with the militiary but then realized since he didnt know anything about it or foreign policy they better complain. They have alot of photos of Obama and his preacher friends that has has known for 20 years but did always hear what they were saying.

    OBAMA = SOCIALISM
