Could McClellan be supporting Obama.
Could McClellan be supporting Obama.

(CNN) – Could Scott McClellan be an unlikely supporter of Barack Obama?

In several interviews with media organizations Thursday night, the former White House press secretary hinted that he was strongly leaning toward the Illinois senator's White House bid over his own party’s presumptive nominee.

McClellan, a former White House official who has angered several Republicans this week for his scathing critique of the Bush Administration, said he hasn't made an official decision on which candidate he will back, but offered that he is "intrigued by Sen. Obama's message."

"It's a message that is very similar to the one that Gov. Bush ran on in 2000," McClellan told CBS News.

The former White House press secretary struck a similar tone in an interview with USA Today, saying that he is attracted to both party's likely nominees.

"I have a lot of respect and admiration for Sen. McCain," he said. "I'm also intrigued by Sen. Obama."

McClellan, who played a key role in the president's 2000 campaign, isn't the first member of Bush's inner circle to express support for Obama. In 2007, former Bush strategist Matt Dowd also said he had become disillusioned with the president and said Obama was the only candidate that appealed to him.

Hillary is the better one   May 30th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Hillary Supporters should unite in Nov and vote against Obama.

Not by staying home, or voting for the lesser evil, McCain… but by actually voting their conscience and writing in Hillary Clinton.

Many of us are doing that. But we need every one of the millions who support HRC to do so in order to win the white house.

Helen   May 30th, 2008 11:51 am ET

I have no tolerance for a LIAR. Just like Barbara Walters went on a book tour and revealed the messy part of her life for $. I now have to add you to that same group of individuals.

I believe you stood before the WH Press and lied continously for the sake of your job. And now you want Americans to dig into their pockets and purchase your book and for what. Only for the money. You lied then and you are more than likely lying now.

You don't represent what Sen. Obama stands for. Although all are welcome, you must know that we are dealing with attics of old politicans. Enter but you must be quiet while your here in Obama Land. And don't even think about joining the Administration.

I can see why republicans hate McClellan… he just made them realize they had been praying to a false god all alone… simple crook who lied and sent their kids to die for his personal ambitions.

To all of you people that will vote for McCain, must not have any Sons or Nephews. If you do when they got to Irag think about your vote. If they get hurt or killed ask yourself was it worth it.

sandy   May 30th, 2008 11:50 am ET

Just remember all of you Hillary supporters, the republicans never had a woman, African American, latino or anything other than white men running. At least the Democrats gave you a choice, And yet you would defect to McCain if Hillary is not the nominee. Do you think that will get you a woman on the Supreme court or someone who will uphold Roe vs Wade? You all better think twice as to what is better for YOU and your families.

George   May 30th, 2008 11:50 am ET

What I find interesting about this man is that as of last year he is on record as saying that he agreed with President Bush on the war in Iraq, several years after leaving the White House. Which do you believe Scott? Could your opinion of Pres. Bush have changed when you were offered a lucrative book deal?!?

steveda - poconos   May 30th, 2008 11:50 am ET

Even this dirt-bag can pick a winner once in a while. Frankly I do not give him much credit as he participated in the frauds he writes about. Kinda like a guard at Auschwitz writing a tell all about the crimes committed there. It would have been nobler for him to report them immediately, not years later.

Shannon Wadding   May 30th, 2008 11:48 am ET

What is the likelyhood that this Presidential election will start a revolution?

The people should hold their elected officials accountable–especially in Michighan and Florida–for holding the will of the people, not the special interests and lobbyists.

I fear this general election will end up in the US Supreme Court if the DNC chooses Hillary Clinton as the Presidential nominee for the Democratic party.

How did the Democratic voting system become such a running joke to the world while we try to influence foreign governments to do the same?

Tell The Truth   May 30th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Wow @ some of these replies………..I've been here for a few months and the vast majority of you Clinton and McCain supporters sound like characters that have come straight out of a comic book.

I wonder if you actually spread this ignorance in public or is it just another identity you take on when you join cyberspace? This has gotten beyond the realms of laughably pathetic. I don't think you believe some of the things you say yourselves.

Is our society really this ignorant.? Tell me it ain't so. If so, then we're all doomed and we definitely know the ones to blame for it. No wonder foreigners call us stupid Americans. They're definitely not talking about Obama supporters because that's where you'll find all the Americans with intellignece and common sense.

CNN = You need to post this

Alex   May 30th, 2008 11:47 am ET

This should be a good sign to shut Ferraro. Even Republicans love Obama. The only people who do not like him are bitter racists like you. If there is a functioning brain on your shoulder even if you do not like his skin color you just have to keep your comment to his views not his skin color. Certain things never change. Get over it. The people are ahead of you old lady. Move on.

Tolga   May 30th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Geoff the Great Independent!   May 30th, 2008 11:46 am ET

We should not be surprised at the insights that would come out of te Bush Administration. The administration is corrupt! I'm always amazed when I read comments from McCain and Clinton supports about th decision to support Obama. For instance, Barack can't be trusted, but yet Hillary outrighit lied to the American people to bolster more support and at any means necessary ton several occaisions. She is willing to do and say anthing to get to the white house…. She dishonest and we can't trust what she'll say and when she's tired we can't trust what she'll do! She might not answer the phone. Scott sees this and is intriqued more by Obama. He sees that McCain is strong on military strategy (if you beleive it) but lack backbone, judgement and true understanding of American people. We'll he's just like Bush.. Leadersip is not based on experience its based on charisma, character, judgment and intelligence. Obama is a greater leader than anyone in the compaign.

Go Scott! Together we will weather this "Storm" The trught will be told.

It shows that many Republicans are discouraged with their party right now; for Carl Rove, GW and John McCain are not what they appeared to be regarding polocies, especially the war. McCain was not real keen on the war in the beginning, but he had to saddle up with Bush to keep his status in WA. Look back from 2000 to present and see the changes made in McCain regarding the Bush Administration.

This also, shows Obama's attraction to all people who are sick of the present Washington status. Obama found this out when he was elected senator and decided this has got to change how we do business in Washington. Why do you think they are really trying to get Hill or John in there, then it is the same as before.

Good book by the way.

Please post those of us that are not Obama fanatics.
The Obama followers say they see the wisdom in talking to our international enemies (so do I by the way) and advocate such diplomacy.

But on these blogs they display an inability to dialogue with anyone who disagrees with them or who is different from them.

So much hatred evident in their vitriolic, name-calling, insulting posts.

If they can not be civil, respectful and tolerant of fellow democrats, how can they hope to talk to our sworn enemies?

"It's a message that is very similar to the one that Gov. Bush ran on in 2000," McClellan told CBS News.

That doesn't set off any alarm bells in your head?

Obama is LYING to you and wrapping it in sincere tones and bipartisanship. He is the Bush of the Left, but you don't care do you? All your hatred of Bush isn't about him being a duplicitous liar, it's because he's not YOUR duplicitous liar.

bill dee   May 30th, 2008 11:44 am ET

It doesn't matter why Mcclellan wrote his Bush book. What is important is the message the book imparts: that government stopped performing its primary function, that of problem solving, and instead allowed politics and wishful thinking to propel this country into failed policies. Moreover, in the pursuit of these failed policies , administration officials manufactured facts to fit events and lied to protect their jobs.
The lack of leadership at crucial times permitted policies to get so out of control that this train wreck produced the Katrina and Iraq debacles.
One cannot blame a low-level administrative spokesman whose job was to obfuscate facts and regurgitate the talking points of the day to the sleeping press for not being willing to leave his job when Generals and Cabinet appointees sat silently by as the train left the tracks. All those lockstep administrative officials, past and present, who now berate McClellan need to look at their own service. They may have been appointed by the President, but they, and he, works for us!
Good for you Scott. You go girl!

Welcome   May 30th, 2008 11:43 am ET

Welcome to the Obama team, Scott. I think I understand why you remained silent. In those days, it was considered almost mutinous to speak up. The Bush administration has always dealt harshly with dissent, which is odd, considering dissent is one of the cornerstones of American Democracy. It will be refreshing when Mr. Bush and his gang leave the White House. The place will definitely need airing out; the stink of arrogance and a complete disregard for the law will be heavy in the air for some time.

It is important that we, as Americans, remember where our loyalties are. We shouldn't be loyal to a man or his regime, but to our country.
Presidents come and go. The country, if we manage ourselves correctly, will go on for a long time.

I congratulate you on coming forward. I'm sure there are others who worked near you who, if they had more guts, would come forward too.

And I'm the problem?
Oh God you make me sick.
You have a chance to change it this year, but you won't because you just cant trust Obama.
After Bush, an ape would be beter.
But you don't trust Obama.
You make me sick.

one Obama blogger   May 30th, 2008 11:40 am ET

One Obama blogger, in response to the unelectable issue, actually posted that the country is in such a bad way that Obama can sleep-walk his way into the presidency.

Well, that is exactly what he has done to gain a small lead in the primary. But Americans are not that stupid.

Come Nov, they will fully realize that he is not qualified to lead, that he has done absolutely nothing for his country, and they will not simply allow him to win by default. Which, incidentally is how he won his senate seat.

George   May 30th, 2008 11:40 am ET

I guess he thinks this will help sell more books. He will need to sell as many as he can since he can't be trusted by anyone by Republicans or Dems.

He will fit well with O'Bama. Say anything to sell books or get elected whether you believe it or not…..

…and until the philosophy that holds one race superior and another inferior "there will be war"

Until the color of a man's skin is of no more importance than the color of his eyes "there will be war"

In the East, West, war, rumors of war!

The words of Bob Marley from the song "War"

Folks, America is divided by race, gender, income, faith and social issues.

Until Americans work together as one nation; divisions will constantly cause us pain.

There are some who prefer to waste everyday of their lives living in hate while at the same time worry about income and their low standards.

There are some who prefer to curse each other instead of picking up a book or read to their children.

Why it is that today at Google, approximately 80% of the employees are foreign nationals?

Why is it that Americans refuse to obtain the highest education possible? Why is it that 50% of the employees at Google are Asians?

Why it is that MIT, Harvard and other colleges are NOT full of Americans but foreigners.

AND, why is it that so many Americans blame Mexicans for job loss whereas Americans can and should afford to pay the menial wages the Mexicans gets?

Why blame others for problems caused by you?

A half black man who is highly educated and YES; much more educated that our current President is being treated like dirty by the low minded, hateful, uneducated morons who refused a higher education?

Why? Why? Hell WHY?

Keep hating each other and you'll find it impossible to love yourselves while you remain bitter toward each other.

You get an endorsement from a Republican and the right wing goes into an endless cycle of spin. Even if it's a good endorsement, these Jacksonian Republicans just spin that endorsement negatively.

Everyone forgets John McCain has the endorsement of President GWBush. I can't wait for McCain to renounce and denounce GWBush.

How funny to have some of you speak of loyalty, when you really mean blind support. I had been a republican since I was old enough to vote, until the party nominated W. I now consider myself an Independent. The party can't put up a brain damaged alcoholic like W and expect me to support him. I thought he was slimy when he first ran and that opinion has not changed. The republican party it's self has somehow become the self righteous party. Not to mention they turned the biggest budget surplus into the biggest budget deficit.

Like many of us, Scott had his eyes opened and you sure can't fault the man for that experience and his response to it.

Another nutjob radical Hillary fundamentalist. Nevermind all of your glaring grammatical errors, let me just point out a fact. Hillary agreed to the same rules as Obama did, except she held a fundraiser in FL after the DNC made their ruling, and against the DNC, left her name on the ballot in MI. It's not Obama's fault that some FL stations continued to run his ad. So based on your irrational logic, Hillary should be the one that is disqualified for breaking the rules, if not then, then now, since she initially agreed to the rules. Only now that she's getting her fat rump served to her does she want to change the rules in her favor. She, and now her supporters, are showing themselves to be the utterly reprehensible, slimy, self-serving, narrow-minded individuals that they are. You people are the worst sore-losers EVER!!! I hope you realize that he will need Hillary supporters votes to win the general election. You are not making a good case for him with your condescending attitudes and obnoxious comments. He will have to have their votes in order to win. That is a fact. As a Democrat, I supported Hillary and will until she bows out. McCain may be bipartisan once in awhile, however, it`s the Republican actions and direction over the last 7 years that I want to distance myself from. Obama is about as far away from that crowd as I can get. ——— Guess I`ll support Obama.

The usual ugly comments from Bush-ites and Clinton supporters.

J Ullman   May 30th, 2008 11:31 am ET

"…offered that he is "intrigued by Sen. Obama's message." "It's a message that is very similar to the one that Gov. Bush ran on in 2000," McClellan told CBS News.

That statement right there should scare the hell out of every democrat on the face of the planet, yet you see in the comments here that people seem to think that McClellan's words are somehow a good thing for Obama.

One of Bush's own former insiders sees enough similarity between Bush and Obama that he would be willing to vote for Obama. How is that a good thing people? McClellan isn't saying Bush is so bad he wants something different, he's saying that he sees something in Obama that is enough like Bush that he's willing to vote for him. Obama needs to figure out very quickly what McClellan sees as "similar" and get as far away from it as he can.

Getting the support of former Bush cronies because they want something different would be good. Getting that support because they see something similar is BAD.

an UNLIKELY supporter? I had this guy pegged for an Obama supporter since the first report came out! I mean the guy works for Bush and waits several years to speak out against him and the Iraq war! Then he decides to come out with this "bombshell" during a crucial point in the election process…where Hillary is just about done and Obama is fighting to garner the support of the disenfranchesized dems as McCain continues to gain momentum nationally among independents and (slowly) conservatives. Unlikely, my eye.

This is a discombobulated young man, he wrote this book without, in many instances, first hand direct knowledge of many of the conversations and meetings. Its just a bunch of heresay with some very serious accusations that he has no direct knowledge of.

Its obvious he is hurt and mad at his dismissal from his job as press secretary, however he was afforded the opportunity to resign.
I sincerely hope he is not summoned to appear before the congress as Rep Wexler from FL has suggested as he could end up with major problems and expense that he never, in his wildest dreams, could have anticipated. OH THE THINGS SOME WILL DO FOR MONEY.

Scott long for TRUTH in government, and under GWB that was never to be. It's amazing how many refuse to see the TRUTH. He was loyal before to the lies and propaganda CHANEY and BUSH. But now he cannot swallow it anymore and only those that still subscribe to the lies still cannot see it. The same BLIND people who voted for the worst president ever in the history of mankind and now is looking to replace him with his twin. McSane..

Loyalty to the right cause   May 30th, 2008 11:26 am ET

Loyalty is an important concept and should be honored.

When loyality breeds obstruction and injustice, change of recipients of loyality should take place. Bush or the country? The latter, of course.

Scott is courageous.
He reflected, suffered, and made a decision to let people know that he is loyal to the U.S.

Let us hope that more people in this shabby administration find the courage to step forward and stop the lies.

The painful truth which the majority of us still doesn't believe.

Scary but the truth will come out!

It makes me no difference who McClellan supports but I am sure happy that he too has exposed the Bush administration. Bush, Cheney, Condi, Rove, Rumsfeld and all their counselors(attorneys) should be put on trial. Thank God Colin Powell got out before he got any deeper and I'm sure Colin knows the truth also.

I want to get one thing clear.

Anyone that calls themselves a Republican and supports Obama is not a Republican.. you were most likely a neo-con that didn't realize President Bush and the White House distorted your views with lies.

A Republican is Ron Paul… a fiscal conservative who is against war and for states rights. He is also the only Republican for gay marriage and will defend it until his death. I find it appaling that so many people on the forum decide to throw in Bush as a Republican.

He most clearly is not. From my view, it's my opinion that the days of the two party system is numbered, for I think there will be major splits in the democratic and republican parties if our government keeps failing us.

Andy J, NY   May 30th, 2008 11:23 am ET

Does this guy really have any credibility now? I mean, seriously. Where was he 5 years ago? Heck, where was he 3 years ago? To come out with these "revelations" in a book now, when the president has about 7 months left in office is really suspect, in my opinion.

If he knew these things before, he should have been man enough to say something then. I find it rather disgusting that he only says something now, when he can put some coin in his pocket off of the his tell-all book.

Shameful. If you were a real man, Scott, you would have stood up when it really mattered. It matters absolutely zero now. Zero.

Good post Louis.

I don't know HOW this race will play out because of Hillary's many midguided attempts as snowballing poor uneducated whites. She's played the race card which makes me NOT support her. I look at Mccellan and I see one thing. When someone blows the whistle on you, they're always discribed as disgruntled or horrible bitter angry ex employees. It's amazing that some will follow that road instead of taking a seriously look at the truth.

There is still six months to go before the General Election takes place. If you have already made your decision for Barack Obama, may I suggest that you take a step back and keep your options open. The Chicago Senator has a huge iceberg floating around out there of which we have only seen the tip. To date, his true story has not been fully revealed by the major news networks regarding the shenanigans that took place to further his political career in Chicago. My feeling is that the democrats are going to commit suicide and/or implode from their own zeal to get back into the white house. Popularity contests are generally not very substantial when electing the leader of the USA.

sherrie50   May 30th, 2008 11:22 am ET

That not surprising especially after hearing about Obama race in Chicago in 1996. It is evident that Obama will do anything to win, even destroy candidates for his own end. I had a gut feeling that something was not right from the beginning. More of his character flaws will be revealed during the General Election. By the way, I am an independent thinking Black Female.

McClellen is not disloyal, he's a greedy opportunist looking for cash! This urgency to speak out due to principles and belief conviently creeped up once a publisher dangled a 2 million dollar book deal in front of him. Where was the principles and core belief towards truth in the years he defended the administration and its policies? Why not speak out when it counts? Why not speak out when he left? Why is it that speaking out is contingent on 'Cash in pocket"? This guy's got as much credibility as me when I tried to sell golden gate bridge to my next door neighbor!

Educated Voter for HRC   May 30th, 2008 11:20 am ET

Um…excuse me, but anyone who thinks Scott McClellan has any principles is naive. He was the president's spokesperson. He represented the government of the most powerful nation on Earth. There's a certain level of trust there - if he had issues with what was going on, he should have resigned with dignity.

Instead he was forced out and this is his payback. He himself admits he lied before; why believe him now? Regardless, as a president's spokesperson, this is not professional or ethical.

I am in a similar role in the private sector - this is NOT what you do. Make money by writing a tell-all after you lived high on the hog and lied when it was convenient? Um, no … a principled person would have either resigned in protest or at least kept their silence out of respect for the office, regardless of who was in it.

He's not a whistleblower - there's nothing new in his book. He's rehashing a lot of old information all for the purpose of getting even and making money. He's no better than those he professes to dislike. A scum, a dog, a lying sack of you-know-what.

How interesting that he's for Obama. I can't imagine Barack would welcome this person, unless he's only looking for propaganda.

Actually, what Scott is really trying to do is hurt Obama. Don't get me wrong! I know that some Republicans are crossing over. But listen to what he said. "It's a message that is very similar to the one that Gov. Bush ran on in 2000." He is sneakily trying to compare Barack Obama to George W. Bush while pretending that he is against the Bush administration. This whole thing was planned by Bush, McCain, and McClellan. I told someone right after I heard this that "I bet $100 McClellan will now say he is backing Obama."

Please, people. Think! Read between the lines! Stop taking everything for face value! These people are WAY WAY WAY smarter than the average American who is posting on this blog. I'm sure those with very high IQ scores will agree with me.

CLINTON SUPPORTER   May 30th, 2008 11:16 am ET

What does McClellan like most about him?
The fact that:
He sat for two decades in Rev. Wright's church, with his young daughters, but never heard him say anything offensive.
His wife has never in her life been proud of her country, until recently.
He refuses to pledge flag or wear flag pin (until recently, he won't take if off now).
His close friends include Rev. Wright, Ayers, Rezko.

I am a 53-year old life-long Democrat who will be voting Republican for the first time if Obama is the nominee.

Jaci   May 30th, 2008 11:16 am ET

McClellan, a former White House official who has angered several Republicans this week for his scathing critique of the Bush Administration, said he hasn't made an official decision on which candidate he will back, but offered that he is "intrigued by Sen. Obama's message."

"It's a message that is very similar to the one that Gov. Bush ran on in 2000," McClellan told CBS News.

AND LOOK WHERE THAT GOT US!!!!!!!!!!!! HE SAID IT, OBAMA SOUNDS LIKE BUSH DID IN 2000, SCARES YA DOESN'T IT. It may be that Obama is more like Bush than McCain is if Obama got into office. It's kind of what I've said all along, it's a repeat but the younger voters weren't around then to know how close their CHANGE words are the same. Yep, Bush did changes, that's for sure. Why he hasn't been impeached has got to be because our Dem. Congress doesn't have the guts to do what they know needs to be done.

Why don't you and others like you just admit that you are afraid of Obama because his absentee father at one time was a muslim (before he beame an athiest). You people are terrified that this biracial guy is a muslim (and therefore a terrorists in the eyes of the ignorant) OR you are just looking for reasons to not vote for the black guy.

So please stop with the disengenous scare tactics. The campaigns have vetted Obama and they can't find any horrible secrets BECAUSE THERE ARE NONE. WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET.

Educate yourselves people and vote for our futures - OBAMA '08

Good let him support Obama then there will be a smear book about him next year. Boy Obama sure draws them doesn't he, the looney Catholic priest, Rev. Wright, Ayers, Rezko, Hamas, McClellan etc. etc.

Another washington insider for Obama. Lets change politics with Pelosi, Dean, Kennedy, Dodd, Daschele etc leading the way. Those are the new faces we need in washington. And if you think Clinton and Mccain have blood on their hands for voting for the Iraq war, so do most of the dem congress thats supporting Obama. Should they be thrown out too? Another lifelong dem thats leaving the new far left party.

Who really cares who Scott "Judas" McClellan supports anyway?

And why would Obama want his so-called "endorsement" ?

Obamas message is resonating. Its not about the individuals its about the whole. We'll all come together.
God Bless America

Aw-right! Obama's message is similar to Gov. Bush's message in 2000! Great choice Dems!!!

The biblical admonition "What profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?" might be something for McClellan to ponder over as he moves forward selling out his former friends and cohorts. Money can be important if earned honestly but it has little value compared to integrity. Only a fool puts profit above his immortal soul. To work for people..take their money…pretend to be their friend…spout their party line…and then sell them out to the opposition for cash doesn't speak well of a man's character. I realize it makes the partisans on the other side happy and they clap their hand in glee but actions like McClellan's always come back to bite you. Do you really think his "new friends" would actually trust him as far as they could throw him? Use him yes! Throw him under the bus when his value to them disappears. Probably and quickly! And maybe it will be what he deserves!

The Truth

You are correct. Sen. Clinton's main weakness is her high negatives. For some reason, she tends to be a hate magnet for Republicans.

For all her bluster about winning swing states, Republicans have such distain for Sen. Clinton that I fear it will motivated their turnout.

Obama on the otherhand is a comfortable choice for Republicans who want register a protest against their party, but wouldn't vote for a Clinton to do it.

he's a moron for putting country over Bush? and you're a democrat…. i think not!! this proves Republican operatives flood these blogs , posing as Hillary supporters , to cross dissention within the party

Well…Being a BO supporter I guess this is good…But Barack, please be wary of this guy….I don't quite trust him…I don't doubt a lot of what he is saying coz in my book nothing can be worse than the Bush administration, but
