(CNN) — Bill Clinton is a very popular figure among voters in Puerto Rico's Democratic primary, CNN's exit polls show.

Just over 80 percent give the former president a favorable rating, while only 15 percent hold a negative view of him.

The majority of Puerto Rican voters hold an unfavorable view of his successor, President Bush — but to a much lesser extent than Democrats on the mainland. According to the exit polls, 59 percent say they aren't happy with President Bush, while 39 percent hold a favorable rating.

Among Democrats in the United States, Bush's disapproval rating is above 90 percent. Why is he more popular among Puerto Rican voters? He ended the very unpopular Navy bombing exercises on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques in 2003, after six decades of escalating local opposition.

Hillary Clinton is like the mistake your cat made in the storage closet. You can smell the stink. You can see where the mess is, but you still have to put everything out of the way to finally get at it.The last 2 primaries are the last things to get out of the way, then the cats smelly mess is finally gone.

He he he he They voted for Bill's 3rd term he he he he he he he he

mwFlorida   June 1st, 2008 7:44 pm ET

Apparently, they don't know about his womanizing ways. And for you and your racist polling process, that shows your character and your view of this election. It clear what your view is an who you are for in this election. For you to get paid to incite people into voting a certain way is shameless and in my opinion you have no business in this type of forum. It's people like you that reach millions of viewers that keep this racist mentality of white/black going.

OBAMA IS NOT ELECTIBLE!   June 1st, 2008 7:38 pm ET

SO ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY THAT HILLARY ONLY WON BECAUSE OF BILL?

MOST DAYS YOU GUYS SAY THAT BILL IS HURTING HER CAMPAIGN,
BUT TODAY HE HELPED HER?

YOU'RE JOB IS TO CREATE HYPE, AND YOU DO IT WELL!

APPARENTLY PUERTO RICO HAS AN UNFAVORABLE VIEW OF OBAMA AS WELL AS BUSH!

CONGRATULATIONS HILLARY! LANDSLIDE 36%!

Cheranne Smith   June 1st, 2008 7:36 pm ET

Schneider's comments continue to show how the media has treated Sen. Clinton, not giving her the win credit, but saying due to her husband's popularity she won. Continuing to show the discrimination she has had to deal w/ and the bias of press. I think CNN continues to think they are press, right?

Laidetea   June 1st, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Bill there's nothing I can say for your pathetic self. Please go home and do something, anything but stay away from the White House.

Donna   June 1st, 2008 7:23 pm ET

How come if Hillary wins in Puerto Rico it's because of Bill? How come if Hillary wins at all it's something other than what it truly is…Hillary is the best candidate. It doesn't take a rocket scientist or a Puerto Rican to figure it out.

carolinas   June 1st, 2008 7:22 pm ET

Clintons can only brainwash people to get vote…that is not possible in Main land and urban areas. Specially educated people can recognise their cunning tactics to get vote…so they approach such church going/ gun lovers/ older women / and economically who are weak.

It is not a real win…shame on Hillary. How much she insulted and wounded Obama…it is not at all excusable….OBAMA 2008.

Lorna, NY   June 1st, 2008 7:19 pm ET

I thought Puerto Ricans were smarter than this! Bill Clinton was not the candidate, stupids!

kelvin mays   June 1st, 2008 7:16 pm ET

ellianna   June 1st, 2008 7:07 pm ET

I'll bet "Slick Willie" had a GRRRRRRREAT time in Puerto Rico!!
He certainly would have lots of "good lookins" to choose from!! What an opportunity — and of course it depends upon what "is" is!! Poor Hillary!! What a victim you really are!! Sometimes "you can't live with them — and yet - you can"t live without them"!! I suppose it is the $$$$$ and Power that keep you hooked, right?? Slick better have lots of fun for the next week ! Soon it is "back to New York " for both of you!! The "excitement" will soon be over and you are at the end of the road!! After yesterday, Barack Obama owns the Democratic Party!! Yipee!!!!!

Ralph   June 1st, 2008 7:02 pm ET

Well, at least people can't say he isn't popular anywhere.

Hillary 2 Victory   June 1st, 2008 7:01 pm ET

WHATS YOUR POINT SCHNEIDER? Bill and Hillary are also popular in NY, NJ, TX, FL, ARK, PA, IN, OH, KY,CA, NM, PR, MI, NEED I LIST MORE. THESE STATES ARE ENOUGH FOR HILLARY TO WIN ION NOMEMBER. OBAMA CAN NOT WIN THESE STATES. THE DEAN & PELOSI LED dnc ALONG WITH KERRY, RICHARDSON, OPRAH, KENNEDY (IS FINALLY RECEIVING JUSTICE FOR THE DROWNING OF HIS SECRETARY KOPECKNE IN THE ICY RIVER WHILE HE RAN HOME TO SOBER UP). Ther is something suspicious jumping out of OBAMA's CLOSET every week so you 170 uncommitted Super Delegates and the ones who have already gone and endorsed OBAMA against your state's wishes better fly to Hillary's side and endorse her if you want to win in November because us Hillary supporters will not unite behind Obama like you suppose we will do. DON'T ASK AND WE WON'T JHAVE TO SAY H…! NO!!! BUT ONE THING FOR SURE WE WILL NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA. YES WE CAN.

Could someone ask the Puerto Ricans to keep her there on the island for ever. She can fight for them to become a state AND perhaps in 3 milleniums to come become a country. Then she can become their Madam President.

Ellie   June 1st, 2008 6:17 pm ET

Great, perhaps the Clintons can now move to Puerto Rico. You can have them both.

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   June 1st, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Pathetic.

CNN Post this.

Way to downplay a huge win for Senator Clinton by saying it was due to her husband.

Janel, St. Paul, MN   June 1st, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Yes, President Clinton is the hero of Puerto Rica voters. . .but they are misinformed. Sadly they haven't been in tune with recent developments and how our former president and first lady have devastated Senator Obama's campaign. . .simply because he is an African American.

I'm sorry for them –the Puerto Ricans.

tj in fla   June 1st, 2008 5:23 pm ET

Does the fact that in 1999 he pardoned PR FALN terrorists over the objections of the Dept. of Justice and others have anything to do with his popularity?

Gnomepark   June 1st, 2008 5:21 pm ET

But Bill isn't running for Prez….or maybe he thinks he is.

Vig   June 1st, 2008 5:21 pm ET

Another sexist spin. Oh, Bill Clinton is big in P.R. and that's why Hillary won? Is that what the hidden message is? Hillary Clinton has more tenacity, more guts, more brains then your puppet Obama.

Voice   June 1st, 2008 5:10 pm ET

Schneider ane Wolf Blitzer's calim that Clinton is leading the popular vote has been disputed by MSNBC. Clinton is estimated to get a net of more than 100,000 from Purto Rico. Counting in Florida popular vote, Clinton will be still behind Obama in the populaer vote. Clinton can try to claim Michigan votes, but it will not succeed if caucas votes are counted. There is no way that Clinton can claim the popular votes now.

It was purely CNN institutional attmpet to put Clinton on the ticket as VP.
This claim of Clinton's popular vote is a trash journalism, CNN and I challenge you to post this message.

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   June 1st, 2008 5:03 pm ET

They think they're voting for Bill Clinton's 3rd term - ha ha ha ha. Can anyone say NAFTA?

Bill gave all the jobs away (the only ones left, he has tried to sneak out of the country thru CAFTA behind everyone's back).

The people of Peurto Rico are brain-washed by the Mighty Clinton Machine of the 1990s

Janel, St. Paul, MN   June 1st, 2008 4:28 pm ET

The win is because the people in Puerto Rica don't understand the issues and are feeling loyal to President Clinton.

This vote really doesn't count for much.

Elaine   June 1st, 2008 4:28 pm ET

As an "Older Woman Hillary Clinton Supporter"; if Hillary is not the Democratic nominee in November, I will be writing in Hillary Clinton on my ballot in the General Election. I encourage all others to do the same instead of not voting at all or voting for McCain or Obama. Let us send a clear message that we will not let sexism in America over shadow the best candidate to be President of these United States.

Christopher Wiren   June 1st, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Angry Clinton supporters tell party leaders: 'Let's go McCain!'
Is this not a failure?!

Why would any person, in their right mind, suddenly be PRO WAR and ANTI HEALTHCARE?

4 years of more Bush is NOT the right thing for the Democratic Party.
Should we not stand for our believes, against the Republicans, regardless of the outcome in this nomination?

Marisa Alvarez   June 1st, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Local analysts here in the island would disagree with CNN numbers on voter turnout. The estimate down here is from 225,00 to 250,000.

In addition, the argument that Sen. Clinton's sucess in this "event" is a sign of her popularity among Hispanic voters in the mainland is simply not true. She is simply riding in her husband's tailcoat. Bill Clinton's presidency coincided with prosperous times, and the people remember that the island's economy benefitted from them.

As for Mr. Macauliffe's comment on Sen. Clinton's popularity with Hispanic voters in US. Results here do not translate to the mainland: Hispanics are not a homogenous group. Cubans have never voted the same way as Puerto Ricans in the mainland; Mexicans and Dominicans are more concerned with immigration, an issue that does not affect the PR voter who is an American citizen. The Hispanic voting community is as diverse as a voter from West Virginia is different from one in California.

I very much doubt we will be seeing much of Mrs. Clinton after this charade, now that she's gotten out of this island another talking point for her run for the presidency. I bid her adios.

Jenny   June 1st, 2008 4:11 pm ET

. . . Then maybe Bill and Hillary can be president and Vice president
of Puerto Rico.

Yes We Can.
Obama 08.

Puerto Ricans voted for Bill NOT Hillary. It was fueled by nostalgia. Sad, imagine if we kept voting on what "was" rather than what "is."

Sick of Politics   June 1st, 2008 4:06 pm ET

So, George Bush won thanks to his daddy, & Hillary did well in some state thanks to her dishonest husband who fooled around. Is there moral in this country?

Bill is one of the best Presidents the US has had! 8 years of peace and prosperity that we will never forget. Thank you President Clinton!

Ron L   June 1st, 2008 3:35 pm ET

WHY…WHY..WHY.. does someone like Mr. Schneider spends so much time talking about issues that DON"T MATTER!!!

HE KNOWS…the POPULAR VOTE IS "NOT" HOW THE WINNER WILL BE SELECTED….

Hillary ( along with Chelsea and Bill) has practically lived in Puerto Rico the last week and she was EXPECTED to win so lets move on to REAL NEWS…

Natasha in Atlanta   June 1st, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Who cares, there vote is not even a consideration in the General Election. If Hillary is the nominee, she will not get my vote, she won't have the majority of the African American vote, which she needs to win the General Election. Then Hillary folks are made and saying they hijacked the delegates and broke the rules, well I feel the rules were broken anyway by reinstating the MI & FL anyway!!!

OBAMA 08, 12

Let's just united the party. Hillary and Hillary Campaign and supportors do not care about the party. It is all about Hillary !!!

Peachy Keen   June 1st, 2008 3:28 pm ET

Bill Clinton is big everywhere…….I'd say about 250 lbs. Time to start running again. Around the block a few times.

Jeff   June 1st, 2008 3:27 pm ET

My Question to CNN and donna Brazile who is a supporter of Obama.
If Obama has the lead in deligates but not enough to cross the finish line and is behind in popular vote
and
If Hillary is behind Obama in deligates buy ahead in popular votes
Then why do I keep hearing Obama wins because he has more deligates.
He does not have enough to cross the line.
Why would the supers who will be the deciding factor count the lead in deligates when he does not cross the line without the supers putting him over that line, over who has more actual votes.
It does not matter if Obama is 2 deligates away from the finish line. He does not cross unless party insiders put him over.
The party bosses like Donna Brazile do not beleive the voters should be the ones who's voices count more than party insiders/supers making that decision.

j kothary, Blaine, WA   June 1st, 2008 3:26 pm ET

thta's been the question…is Bill running for the 3rd term….Puerto
Rico in not New York !!

Tex   June 1st, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Why don't you ask Monica?

shaolinPrince   June 1st, 2008 3:23 pm ET

I do not understand why Puerto Rico voted so overwhelmingly for Clinton, she has never done anything for Puerto Ricans. Bill Clinton did nothing for Puerto Rico, he didn’t even stop the bombings taken place there. Exactly, what have the Clintons done for Puerto Rico. Did Bill Clinton make Puerto Rico a state? NO! Did he stop the bombings and pullout? NO! So tell why my Puerto Rican brothers and sisters fell for the propaganda?

I have yet to understand what Clinton has ever done for Hispanics or Blacks. Unless you count visiting our neighborhoods and churches (because of politics), she has never done anything for us. I am from New York and I know from first hand experience that she has never come out and made any difference in any common problems that face both Blacks and Hispanics here. Clinton, like many Democrats and republicans have made sure that Hispanics and Blacks stay divided because of fear of a very powerful voting block if we were to unite. We (Blacks and Hispanics) allowed ourselves to be manipulated by the media, and politicians into believing that Hispanics and Blacks are enemies, when in fact we face many of the same problems. Clinton stated that she represents a million Puerto Ricans here in New York but what has she actually done. Nothing! I grew up where Blacks and Hispanics were close and even had a saying “Black and Brown that’s how we get down”. However, the media and politicians have instilled into the American people that that Hispanics and Blacks have a dislike for each other so those who do not know the truth believe such propaganda. The media and politicians have made it seem like Blacks will not vote for Hispanics and Hispanics will not vote for Blacks, which is not true. However, when you hear it long enough you start to believe it and vote according to that propaganda. Clinton during this election has played that up from the beginning to keep us divided implying that because Obama is Black, Hispanics should not vote for him. This type of divisiveness by Clinton is a tactic to keep us apart. We (Hispanics and Blacks) must come together and ask Clinton what have you truly done for us.

Rafael San Juan PR   June 1st, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Clinton was good to us and we honor his record in Puerto Rico. Obama is not know here in PR and he got the endorsment from the criminaly indicted Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila with 19 counts of federal election fraud. That made him Obama not well liked here in PR. Obama did not get involve with Puertorricans heart to heart like Clinton did. Obama has no idea of what is important to Puerto Rico and unlike blacks on how they turn their backs against Clinton after all the Clintons did for them. Puertorricans never forget who helps them and Clinton did. That is the difference. Also Clinton supports statehood for Puerto Rico and we want that!

QUE VIVA CLINTON!!!

Obalegerwright   June 1st, 2008 3:19 pm ET

I will not vote for McCain, I will write in Hillary Clinton. I do not trust Obama and his wife is totally undesirable. Tickle Me Elmo will not get my vote. A craze that can only be explained by frenzy, like Elmo.
Just when you thought that it was getting crowded under that bus, Obalegerwright, has just thrown his whole church under the bus. He will do anything to win the Presidency, and I mean anything. Wonder how that will set with all those black people who were jumping up and down and cheering when Wright and Pfleger were putting down white people, this country and especially Hillary Clinton? He might lose the black vote when they realize he was using them to get to point A. He knows they (a mere 12%) cannot carry him to the White House. Wonder how Oprah feels, now that her popularity is waning? Loyality is not his forte! Anything to win is now evident, is it not?

Michigan Voter !!!   June 1st, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Hillary Holds The Keys To The White House !!!!! . She has The Most Support ( Popular Vote ) . We Have Witnessed The Obama Campaign , The DNC , And The Media StealingThe Nomination Form Hillary . This is Madame Clinton last win, hopefully. Bye bye, forever, except Senator Obama picks you for VP. Hope he will not, because your mouth has been too foul! Your supporters alike…even talking of voting for McCain.

Pam   June 1st, 2008 3:15 pm ET

WHO CARES! Puerto Rico really doesn't matter in this election but as a footnote. The Clintons are spending money that they don't have to live a week in Puerto Rico to garner votes that will not put them close to the number that they really need. Montana and So. Dakota are the states that will be seated at the convention and will count this summer. Please, tell me what is wrong with the Clinton campaign that they are wasting time and money. People giving to the campaign at this point have no point!

Bob, Yuma,AZ   June 1st, 2008 3:15 pm ET

How does PR results matter for presidential election ? We can conduct a primary in China too. There Hillary may get huge popular vote to claim a victoty. If we are counting the popular vote let us scrap delegate system and we don't have to had a RBC meeting last week in DC. Maipulation is not a fair game. Hillary campaign should understand that.

Pedro Aponte   June 1st, 2008 3:15 pm ET

How can anyone claim a victory in a primary in PR, when the turnout is well under 20%, compared to the traditional 83% usually seen in PR?

Fact: Most Puerto Ricans DO NOT CARE!!!

Ryan   June 1st, 2008 3:14 pm ET

According to exit polls sexism and racism helped Clinton a lot. I am very confused as to why Clinton seems to claim differently.

Over 30% of Clinton's supporters said race was an important factor. Two thirds of which said it was the most important factor.

Nearly 60% of Clinton's supporters said gender was important.. Over two thirds of which said it was the most important factor.

Griff   June 1st, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Borack Obama is "Doomed" in August.. Go! John McCain….
The Republican's can't win again…. Not After George Bush!!!
Anyone wan't to Bet….

Is it fair to say Hillary won Puerto Rico on her own merits? Or would you believe the 80+ % favorability of Bill Clinton got her her win ?

Wolf Bliter and Schbeider cannot wait to annoce that Clnton is leading the popular vote at 3:03 on saturday. They cannot wait!

I cannot wait to see their disappointment and humilation when their projection falls short. I cannot wait to trash their self
