Clinton's supporters in Puerto Rico say they won't be happy if Obama wins the nomination.

(CNN) – Puerto Rican voters appear to be as divided as Democrats on the mainland, according to CNN's exclusive exit polls.

Among Hillary Clinton's supporters there, 72 percent said they would not be satisfied if Barack Obama wins the Democratic nomination, while only 26 percent said they would be.

Obama's supporters were slightly more willing to support Clinton, but not very. Nearly 60 percent said they would be dissatisfied if the New York Democrat won the nomination, while only 38 percent said they would be satisfied.

Puerto Ricans are not eligible to vote in the general election.

The Democrats will unite for McCain! :)

Obama is a fatally flawed arrogant/user candidate and McCain is much closer to the heart of America in contrast to the sloppy love fest of the postmodern in the moment diatribes!

richard   June 1st, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Um I could be wrong but Democrats in Puerto Rico a clearly not divided. They have consistantly polled higher for Hillary at large numbers. Nice spin once again ONN.

LT for Obama   June 1st, 2008 2:18 pm ET

What I find scary is that I read one person's reason for supporting Clinton and that was that she has Bill who is a great advisor. So basically, they are expecting this to be Bill's third term.

Shasta   June 1st, 2008 2:02 pm ET

I just don't care anymore. This party has become so full of crybabies on both sides. And CNN just loves to feed this by continuously reporting on how divided we are becoming and adding more fuel to the fire instead of reporting on how similar they are and how opposite McCain is to their ideas.

Eleanor   June 1st, 2008 1:54 pm ET

with all due respect Puerto Rico does not even have a vote in the general election!! yes that should be changed but for now it does not count!!
I have every faith once there is a nominee dems will unite and if its Obama, Hillary should bridge that divide so Bush 3 does not get in again!! I dont think any sane american wants to wallow in that misery again

WHO CARES WHAT PUERTO RICAN THINKS RIGHT NOW, THEY CANT VOTE IN A GENERAL ELECTION

zephyr99   June 1st, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Obama is the certain nominee of the Democratic Party. He also has a very big problem with Hillary supporters that might well cost him the general election. There is only one solution. Offer Hillary a spot on the ticket. If Obama supporters cannot stop spewing hatred toward Hillary, Obama will go down in November.

Jay   June 1st, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Bill
i don't think what clinton is doing is right for the country, as she can stop her voters from acting this angry any time she wants to.
She is not playing by the rules that was set. So i ask you what will other world leader, think about her or us when she don't get what she want.. Will there be women scorn there. I would be more incline to believe now that if B. Obama pick her as VP something would happen to him , just so she can be president.
She needs to remember she is the Captain of her Ship and she needs to start showing that.

pam Eugene OR   June 1st, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Clinton supporters are not true Democrats. They are stubborn and selfish. Watch them change their tune when Barack agrees to pay her debts or make her VP. Hillary can be bought off. and we have always knew that. The only decision is who pays her off, Obama or the Republicans. We know what she is and we are just quibbling over the price.

Here's hoping these exit polls are not broken down along lines of race. All of the "analysis" on lines of "race" and "gender" have stoked the flames of division within the party.

Hopefully, the wounds will heal and we will begin to see ourselves as Americans with an incredible journey ahead of us–a journey that will be less difficult if we come together and unify as "one nation under God with liberty and justice for all."

E. C., Houston, Texas   June 1st, 2008 1:45 pm ET

As Voters have learned that Obama has no experience and is not qualified to Vote, Of Course, the natural cause is to vote for Senator Clinton. Senator Clinton brings years and years of experience and leadership to her credit; Obama has 3 years of doing nothing and accomplishing nothing in the Senate. As some have said, Obama strolled through the Senate, enjoyed a cup of coffee…..and now, he's running for the Presidential Nominee of the Democratic Party. Please…….this man doesn't even belong in the running!!

monica   June 1st, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Proof again that Hillary's supporters are only voting for her because she's a woman. Pretty sad. They should take the time to learn about the issues – then they'd see Obama is an excellent second choice.

For me, he's my first choice.

mike   June 1st, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Who, what, where is puerto rico? I don't give a hoot about puerto rico and neither does billery, she just wants their vote. Most of them don't want statehood because they would then have to pay taxes like we do in the United States. Why are we spending billions on their primaries when they can't or won't vote in the GE. I think we should save those billions for use in these United States instead of for a foreign country like puerto rico.

Michael   June 1st, 2008 1:43 pm ET

There is one person in the Democratic party that can begin the process of unifying the party, and she could begin that process as early as Wednesday. If she truly cares about getting a Democrat in the white house the she'd begin her work sooner rather than later. The longer this division remains the more it helps McCain.

BJ   June 1st, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Since Puerto Rico's votes do not count in the general election, it is a great curiousity why anybody spend any time at all down there campaigning.

Oh, I forgot: One candidate so mismanaged her campaign that she owes herself $30+ million and she need Puerto Rico to fire up the old geezers and radical ninnies to send money to her.

How much more evidence do we need of the divisiveness of HRC as a political figure, amply evidenced in the scorched earth campaign she has conducted? Hillary is all about Hillary and apparently her supporters are as hateful as she is, happy to show their spite by voting for a third Bush term. Very sad.

Buckeye Girl 4 Obama   June 1st, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Bill, my question would be addressed to your OTHER info from the exit polls, regarding statehood: Wouldn't there be BENEFITS to PR becoming a legitimate state OR a commonwealth? And, what, EXACTLY, is the difference between the two?

It would be great if you folks would give some background on that after Fareed's show at 2. (Which, by the way, SO FAR, SO GOOD!!!)

Octavian Ceasar   June 1st, 2008 1:34 pm ET

It's amazing that the Democrats have thrown the Clinton's under the bus and have now backed the bus up to run them over again…and again. Do the democrats realize that Hillary received approx. 50% of the votes during this process?

I guess, we'll have McCain democrats now….just like we had Reagan democrats before.

Walter   June 1st, 2008 1:32 pm ET

This is because Clinton supporters are refusing to accept reality. This contest is clearly over! My only suggestion/advice to all those Clinton supporters who are willing to vote for McCain in the fall – is to think about all those young innnocent Americans who are losing their lives in the Middle East over a stupid war that should have never been authorized! Think about that because if you deide to vote for McCain, a lot more innocent blood will be spilled and it will be on your conscious because you decided to vote a Republican back into the White House! So I urge you to please reconsider. Americans have spoken and Barrack Obama will be the nominee. Accept it and move on!

Obalegerwright   June 1st, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Puerto Rico is unique and beautiful, Hillary Clinton will win! I hope Montana and SD are as smart as the people in Puerto Rico.
Just when you thought that it was getting crowded under that bus, Obalegerwright, has just thrown his whole church under the bus. He will do anything to win the Presidency, and I mean anything. Wonder how that will set with all those black people who were jumping up and down and cheering when Wright and Pfleger were putting down white people, this country and especially Hillary Clinton? He might lose the black vote when they realize he was using them to get to point A. He knows they (a mere 12%) cannot carry him to the White House. Wonder how Oprah feels, now that her popularity is waning? Loyality is not his forte! Anything to win is now evident, is it not?

Mark from San Diego   June 1st, 2008 1:29 pm ET

hillary is the best person for the job of president. SHE IS LEADING IN THE POPULAR VOTE THAT IS THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE. the DNC did a grave injustist to her there is no way the DNC could give uncommited votes to obama his name was not on ballot an there is no way you can determan who the voters wanted there was 4 other people in the race. those votes should have not been counted only the ones who name was on ballots. SHAME SHAME ON YOU DNC.

Danny P.   June 1st, 2008 1:26 pm ET

"Being satisfied" clearly has no impact anymore in our culture. Are you satisfied with gas prices? Probably not. Are you satisfied with our current President? 80% of people are not. However, people are still buying gas in droves, and people are not petitioning his impeachment or removal from office.

Satisfaction has no bearing. People may not be happy that their candidate does not get the nomination, but they will still vote along party lines.

Jose   June 1st, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Obama-Webb! or Obama-Sebelius! Yee Haw. Great Democratic Party U.S. Presidential tickets.

Matt   June 1st, 2008 1:24 pm ET

There's obviously a lot of tension in the party between Hillary and Obama supporters. I personally support Obama, but if Hillary won the nomination I would vote for her hands down over McCain. I don't understand how people could possible vote for McCain over the Democratic nominee if they supported the other Democratic hopeful. The differences in policy and belief are just so fundamentally different between either Democratic nominee and McCain, and the differences between the two Democratic hopefuls pale in comparison. People need to rise above this bickering between Hillary and Obama supporters and make sure we don't keep most of the failed policies of the past administration in effect. I understand why people are upset at the opposing hopeful candidate, but we really need to get past this.

Shannon Shiflett   June 1st, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Why be racist? Why feel entitled to the presidency? Why by into the media and right-wing's lies about Obama–when they have already admitted they want Clinton to run against McCain because they believe Republicans can keep the White House that way? Why be so bitter that you'd tear apart the Democratic Party? Why more Clinton/Bush dynasty? These are all questions that Clinton supporters need to ask themselves.

Sam   June 1st, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Why all the fuss and attention over an island who isn't even eligible to

what remains clear to me is that the people claiming to back mccain if hillary doesnt win are not true democrats and they're voting for her because of who she is. what has hillary done that's so substantial that people will refuse to vote or vote for a republican if obama wins the nomination?

people say the race card, the gender card, but how bout the ex-president card? just because bill did more for us doesn't mean that it's in hillary's interest to do it. as a matter of fact its not. she shows what she wont do everytime she has something negative to say about barack obama. how many presidents go in on day one and know what they're in for? none, not a one! so what makes hillary think she'll know what to do? what makes her feel like obama wont know what to do? why does she have to try and downplay his capabilities? hillary has just as much experience as you, me and anybody else walking this earth…none! she's in it for the sole purpose of saying that she's the first woman president. she doesnt care about u andshe doesnt care about me!

these people who speak these evil things about obama ur just as evil as u claim him to be. ur wrong!

Obama 08: Female, 60, white   June 1st, 2008 1:22 pm ET

What does it really matter as you stated they "are not eligible to voye in the general election". Funny how Clinton will use these votes in her bogus claim to have "won" (her rules) while not counting the people in some caucus states nor the uncommited votes that the DNC delegated to Obama.

KP   June 1st, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Puerto Ricans will vote based on name recognition. They know the Clintons and Obama is the new kid on the block. No doubt she'll prevail and not because she is the better candidate.

Who cares, It Puerto Rico!!!

Eva in Florida   June 1st, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Hillary lost the election many weeks ago and yet, her campaign insist ashe will win based on the popular vote in Puerto Rico?

How do you count the popular vote when many states don’t even report it? And, since when the primaries are based on ‘the popular vote’? None of this matters to you, does it? Well, don’t feel bad, because it does not matter to Hillary either.

I wish I knew, who gives some people the right to demand ‘Clinton for President’, or ‘Woman for President’?

Please go ahead and show your hate for a Black Candidate – because this is what it is – and vote for McCain. Feel free to prove to Rush Limbough and Hannity their ‘Operation Chaos’ was a great success so they can brag about it over the next four years. The life will go on, the Iraq war will go on and nothing else will get done, because the Congress will be dead-locked.
