Joe Trippi is the former campaign manager to Howard Dean.

(CNN) - If the corpulent lass hasn’t ululated her first note yet, she is only a few hours away from the performance - at least that’s what Democratic strategist Joe Trippi believes. The man who engineered Howard Dean’s ascension through the party ranks and advised John Edwards during his primary run earlier this year thinks that by the time the speeches are over on Tuesday night, Barack Obama may be over the finish line.

To get there – at the moment I am writing this – he needs 48 delegates. He’ll likely come away from Montana and South Dakota with an additional 10-15, and he’ll probably get a few more of the delegates that are currently pledged to John Edwards. Which means he only needs somewhere around 30 uncommitted superdelegates to come to his side, and he’s across the finish line.

Will it happen by Tuesday night? I’m not so sure. We’ve been talking to supers along the way, and many of them seem to prefer to wait until it’s all over to announce their support. Donna Brazile told us yesterday on CNN’s Election Center that “Wednesday is a new day. Tuesday’s not a new day. Wednesday is.” In recognition of Hillary Clinton’s history-making campaign, they may just wait until the final two contests are over.

But the prevailing wisdom, from Trippi and others, is that Obama will go over the top not long after the final results are in. He only needs 12-15 percent of the remaining pool of superdelegates, whereas Hillary Clinton would have to convince at least 85 percent of them to support her. Could she pull it off? Technically, anything is possible, but it’s worth noting that two more superdelegates declared for Obama at the same time Clinton was handing him his lunch in Puerto Rico.

Her crushing win in the commonwealth certainly gives her bragging rights. Her argument that she may come away with more individual votes than Obama reopens all of those old wounds from the year 2000. But just like the 2000 election, the popular vote doesn’t matter in this contest. What does is delegates. And by that measure, Obama is within a hair’s breadth of becoming the presumed nominee.

The calls for her to drop out have wisely abated. There’s certainly no harm at this point in finishing out the competition. Taking the battle beyond that point gets problematic, according to Trippi. He points out that the DNC rules committee had the votes to pass the 50-50 split in Michigan, but in deference to Clinton, adopted the Levin plan of a 69-59 apportionment. As Trippi told me this morning, “What you saw in that committee meeting is how a committee that’s been the Clintons' has switched and moved to Barack Obama.” It would appear the same could be said about the party itself.

Hey Anne – Bill Clinton is a "Rhodes Scholar." It's really entertaining when people criticize the spelling of others while misspelling words in their own posts, by the way.

Isn’t it a coincidence that the two states Florida and Michigan that had their votes strip, both were won by Mrs. Hillary Clinton? Was she favoring to win both states? It’s a shame it had to happen to women that was favorite to win the Democrat nominee. I wonder what the oads of that happening again are.

Ro   June 2nd, 2008 5:01 pm ET

I can't believe people are still harping on FL and Michigan.

THEY BROKE THE RULES.....THEY KNEW IT BEFORE THEY EVER VOTED....BOTH CANIDATES AGREED THAT THEY WOULDN'T COUNT.

Course, that was before Hillary found out she wasn't gonna win.

Change the rules mid game-another form of cheating.....

I don't think we want Weathervane McCain aka McBush being President and appointing more anti-choice, right-wing, corporate-sponsored judges. Let's pull on our big boy and big girl pants now, people.

I don't understand the Hillary supporters who dislike Obama so much. They're stances on most of the issues are virtually the same. Is it that you are sore to see your candidate lose? I'm a Hillary supporter, but to be honest, I can barely see the policy differences between her and Obama. Actually, they're both too liberal for my taste, but they're policies will be mostly identical.

I know heated campaigns inspire disdain for the opponent, but can't you see past the election process to their potential policies? Obama and Clinton will make basically the same decision on almost all questions of policy. McCain will bring about far different policy in our country. How can a Clinton supporter say they will vote Republican if Obama is nominated? It seems like petty foolishness to me. Can somebody explain?

Terrence (Winston Salem, NC)   June 2nd, 2008 4:57 pm ET

People have been saying how negative Obama voters are, but on May 31, the nation watched and saw who the animalistic, hateful people were.

No disrespect, but Clinton's supporters "showed out" at the rules convention. Grown people acting like rabid individuals.

I dare anyone to dispute this fact. CNN post this. It's nothing but the truth.

Hillary lost. It was close and hard fought. You are bitter because your candidate lost. Now you must put your bitterness aside unless you truly want to derail Obama and hire McCain to continue what the Republicans want to continue. Think about it, McCain handling foreign affairs..... Now that is scarey. Remember "Bomb Bomb Iran"? Or how about fostering econonmic stability in this county? Jobs are moving overseas, we aren't do anything in Wash DC to promote energy alternatives and the tax credits that are there for alternative energy credits expire this December. Think think think. I was for Hillary, but now I see she has not won and Obama has appeal to many and has brought many new people into the election process. Good for him. Now it is time for us to get over the petty emotional reaction. Congratulations Mr. Obama. I will vote for you

asking hillary clinton to run as an independent is the same thing as casting a vote for john mccain.
my message to clinton supporters is this:
obama is not your enemy. he wants the same things you want, and it's not too late to support his campaign. the longer we bicker and squabble, however, the more likely it becomes that mccain will be serving W's third term.

The way in which she will or will not endorse Barack will be all-determining for the outcome in November.

David, Santa Rosa, CA   June 2nd, 2008 4:46 pm ET

I t hink Harold Ickes gave us the clearest example of the Clinton position and how she and her campaign approached this primary. At first, I thought that the Clinton campaign was just trying to be cute and trying to wion momentum amongst the population. I was fairly shocked to see that they actually believe thier own illogical logic.

That made me quite sad. But also, I was relieved that we had made a decision based on our sense of someones abilithy – not gender or race.

If you stop the bad attitudes and namecalling, and do what is RIGHT now, then maybe she has a shot in 2016 and we would be willing to get on board. But I promise you, if Obama loses YOU will be to blame and WE will NEVER vote for HRC in 2012.

I think it is now down to 44 for Obama to clinch.

Wow, Joyce from Florida, angry a little bit?

It is about the delegate count in the end. Even Donna B. said that yesterday on CNN. As far as popular vote, it depends on which scenario you look at. That said, they are both so close in vote, it is almost unbelievable after so many contests. I think by the end of the primaries, it will be almost a tie in popular vote. I guess all we can do is wait until tomorrow night to see what happens.

Older women for Obama, 08

Mfelder   June 2nd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

I must say as a black woman, I am very disppointed in the way that women have conducted themselves over the past few weeks. I think its ok to point out the sexism that have gone on during this campaign, but I think that many of the women have played right into the men perception of women being overly emotional and unable to make rational decisions. I hear aot of women saying that if Hillary is not the nominee they will vote for John McCain. I am not a Hillary supporter, but I do believe in being practical. Had the numbers worked out for Hillary in the FL & MI situation, then I, of coarse, as a democrate would support the democratic nominee. As women, we can be emotional, but we do come to our senses. See, as a woman, you may be ok in this struggling economy, but what about the sisterhood. There are women in this country who are struggling and desperately need healthcare and the other programs that the democratic nominee will push for as president. Do you want to trust the Healthcare plan that John McCain will be pushing. See, I am ok and I can probably get through this struggling economy. But I have Family members and friends who will be struggling. I would like to see something better for them if not for myself. Let's not allow our emotions to rule our rational judgment.

Rick, PA   June 2nd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Joyce in FL – Please, give me a break! Are you so brainwashed that you believe the dribble you write? Who is bullying the party? Did you hear your candidate's mantra that she reserves her right to "take this to the credentials committee"? That is a clear threat to the SD that they better support her or she is going to make a mess of the party. Nice move. Hillary has done everything she could do to make sure that her supporters hate Obama and believe he could not possibly govern this country. You have heard nothing of the sort from Obama about Hillary. And you have the gall to comlain. Admit the fact that Hillary and her gang ran a poor campaign that is now broke. I don't want a manager like that running my country! And, if you want to vote for McCain, go ahead – and if he wins, I hope he appoints the conservative judges he says he will to the Supreme Court so Hillary Clinton will be responsible for Roe V Wade being overturned. And, Hillary and you will be responsible for the conitnuation of the body bags coming from Iraq and possibly from Iran because you will have been responsible for electing a warmonger. Good luck with that!

Cowards!

The Senators look to be taking action but if there are other Democrats in Congress not willing to pull the trigger (no matter who they support) they need to be removed.

These people are paid to make decisions and take positions on issues. If they haven't decided yet they are two ignorant for office, if they haven't declared the decision they're unfit for office.

Publish the list CNN, lets start voting them out in November.

Rob in St Louis   June 2nd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Who cares what Joe Trippi thinks? I can't remember the last time he ran a campaign that didn't implode.

For all you Clinton supporters who want her to run independent, here's a few thoughts:

Florida
Ralph Nader
2000
8 years of Bush

Here's another one: since Obama and Clinton are virtually identical on virtually all of the issues, and McCain is clearly different from either Obama or Clinton on virtually all the issues, what does that say about your reasons for voting for Clinton? Hmm? Maybe the better solution for you to voice your anger at not getting your candidate onto the November ballot, would be for you to spend election day sitting in the corner with your thumb in an orifice of your choice.

Democrats need to unite. We need to lead. We can't lead when half the party is participating in a personality cult. HRC has been a solid, strong candidate, but it's over and she lost. Stop whining and get ready to vote for Obama, so we can wrest our country from the failed policies of the last 8 years–brought to us by the principled but misguided Nader supporters who bought Nader's b.s.. Let's try to avoid making the same mistake twice.

Scott   June 2nd, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Since Howard Dean and the rest of the DNC want to limit Florida and Michigan votes to only count for 50% of their face value, I am urging my fellow Florida Democrats to join me in supporting Senator John McCain. Maybe the Republicians will appreciate and welcome us with open arms.

M.D.   June 2nd, 2008 4:11 pm ET

We went through this eight years ago with Bush. Putting someone in Washington who was "not of Washington" and look where it got us. In a war that is never going to end and with the real terrorist Osama Bin Ladin, still out there!!!!! We also, have gas prices higher than ever, and people out of work and struggling. Like it or not when a Clinton was in office we had some surplus and the economy was not that bad. Why in the heck are people wanting to put Obama into the White House??? You want a bigger mess, that is what is going to happen. Yes, I understand that there are many many people that do not like Clinton, but we do not need another "newbe" trying to learn while on the job. We need someone who has some knowledge and knows what to expect. Someone who has been in Washington for years and can make their way around. Someone who is crafty and can make deals with other Washington insiders, and that is not Obama. I have been an ardent Democrat for years and cannot stand Mr. 100 years in Iraq and do not know anything about the economy McCain, but for the first time in my voting life I am voting for a Republican.
Former Edwards supporter turned Clinton supporter, now McCain supporter.

I think it is really really funny that through all this campaign – Obama has always respected Hillary ALWAYS, even with divisive remarks from Bill, and all you media people. Even yesterday he again "PRAISED" her.

But Hillary, you all know she still got in her little digs at the Obama campaign with her remark about on day 1 she will be action and not "JUST TALK" Still carrying it to the bitter end. Hillary has no shame, no respect, no loyality to the party.

Bye bye Clintons your DAY IS OVER. And carring this to the DNC committee again – forget it. You would not deserve Michigan anyway. And that is correct, Senator Obama, an honorable man and candidate, honored the DNC rules and took his name off – not because he was "ordered to" but because he is a true and honest, and loyal democrat who felt DNC decision was made not to honor Michigan's voting system period so as a future commander in chief would do for his party and his country, he removed, along with several other honorable candidates, his name from the ballot. Not knowing of course that the divisive Hillary would not – so don't talk to me you ladies and white folks about how "ready" and experienced Hillary is – she will win at any cost, including the cost to the American people, the democratic party and any one else in their way.

Michigan deliberaly went against the rules to foster their own agenda for keeping same states from being 1st all time -- we all heard their reason for going early and that they would do it again. So why do they deserve any consideration period. With Florida, it is different. A republican led group made the decision. Which lends to to ask Floridians if ALL YOU DEMOCTRACTS are in Florida why in the hell is your state goverment run by republicans – perhaps you folks need to find some democrats in Florida to run in your state and house positions. Don't blame rest of America because you democrats can't get in.

GO OBAMA

Clinton Supporter   June 2nd, 2008 4:04 pm ET

I am so incredibly impressed that Hillary Clinton, true to her word as usual, is going to the very end with this thing. Just imagine how hard she'd fight for YOU as president. She's no quitter. Win or lose, she's not backing down. Winning candidates always pay off each other's debts, so that's irrelevant. But no more Clintons, that IS relevant. Certainly Bill and Hillary gave us the most successful and productive presidency in the latter half of the twentieth century.

The BO contingent wants us to think the 1990s were the bad old days. The bad old days of 22 million new jobs, a balanced budget, no deficit, a strong dollar, help to pay college tuition, lower interest rates on credit and mortgage and student loans, welfare under control at long last and the Earned Income Tax Credit – the best thing that ever happened to working poor. What's to miss on that list?

NYDemocrat   June 2nd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

The Clintons must learn the meaning of the word "GRACEFUL".

There is time for everything and everyone. I admire Hillary's tenacity but there is no way she will be the nominee. Does she need the Party and us women voters to offer her a graceful exit from the race, or is she graceful enough and mature enough to know when and how to pull out on her own? This, too, will tell us about her character and her presidential fitness. Let us see how she will handle this biggest challenge to her ego.

Laidetea   June 2nd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

I think the VANITY FAIR article about Bill's dirty money deals and his skirt-chasing (even while campaigning for his wife)...you can read it on-line or in next week's issue....will be the LAST STRAW for a lot of the Super Delegates who remember (with distaste) the 2nd Clinton term, and won't want a SCANDAL-RIDDEN Bill Clinton anywhere around the election, if they can help it.

SO WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH ALL THIS BUZZ ABOUT WHO IS THE BEST FOR THE USA?
LADY CLINTON HAS OUR VOTE!!
LITER OF 12

Ted   June 2nd, 2008 3:51 pm ET

I see a lot of denial. Hillary lost. The rationalization is weak. It's old political excuses from those who like the status quo.
Wake up America, while the hope and pathway for change may be narrow under an Obama presidency, it is totally non-existent under Clinton special interest and lobbyist oriented ideas and principals. Maybe the detractors are afraid of change? If you really wnat to help change the way Washington works, dump every incumbent you can, regardless of the pork they beat their chests about. It's your money, keep it in the first place.

Donna Brazile ought to shut her fat mouth. I am sick and tired of listening to her bull for months now. Just go away and take Nobama with you.

lol   June 2nd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

obama might win the primary, but he will be added to the dnc's finest list of losers (mondale, dukakis, gore, kerry) he is another george mcgovern.

George in Indianapolis   June 2nd, 2008 3:45 pm ET

To all of those who refuse to accept the political will of the people, and fail to discern that the majority supports Sen. Obama, I will simply say the game is over, you lost! Pick up your ball and go home. Your mother is calling you. The street lights will be on soon. As for your temper tantrums and acting out, by holding your breath and pouting and saying you will not support Obama, it simply means that children will simply be children. Shooting themselves in the foot or cutting off their nose to spite their face. So go ahead vote for whomever you choose. If you picked one loser and can't accept it, more than likely you will pick another one with the same result. Freud alluded this when he described insanity.

gary   June 2nd, 2008 3:45 pm ET

bill   June 2nd, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Hill has won the nomination. She has the popular vote and is getting the larger share of SD's. Why would she quit now?

The Truth   June 2nd, 2008 3:43 pm ET

If Hillary wants a future in politics she will do the right thing for the party and bow out and support Obama.......

If she wants to be a spoiler she will destroy her chances of ever becoming a force in the senate and fade into oblivion.....

The Democratic party and America stand behind Obama 100%.
Will you Hillary Clinton?............

OBAMA '08!

Tracy   June 2nd, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Look at what Hillary has done to our country. She will go down in history as one of the greatest destroyers of our nation. The eyes of the world are on her and she is disgracing us all.

scott   June 2nd, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Jerry   June 2nd, 2008 3:41 pm ET

American love Obama..........Hillary why is so many people find that you are a evil person

Obama 08

Silence Dogood   June 2nd, 2008 3:39 pm ET

You have to consider the huge following Hillary has. I hope the DNC does not repeat the sad lesson of 1968. There was a delegate leader way farther out in front than Obama. But there was unrest in the DNC and a some unhappy folks. Just like now. The DNC dismissed the concerns of these people, and went ahead pig-headed. Just like now. There were protests in the street. Just like now.

Then the DNC went on to blow the election and Nixon came to power.

You may agree or disagree with the Clinton supporters. But if you blow them off, the DNC will lose it. Again.

Instead of getting on the short-term feel-good hate band wagon, I hope the DNC will attempt to try to unify the party after a long primary. Remember that a lot of the Clinton critisisms, real or imagined, started with the arch conservative attacks during the Clinton administration. Don't be a mounthpiece for conservative hate.

gary   June 2nd, 2008 3:39 pm ET

THIS RACE IS FIXED. OF COURSE HE WILL GET TO THE FINISH LINE. HE WILL LOOSE IN NOV. AMERICA DESERVES WHAT THEY GET. THE HATERS,MEDIA,DNC,ETC. TRASHED HRC'S CHANCE BECAUSE OF BIAS. NOW WE WILL GET OUR PAY BACK IN NOV. O.B. SUPPORTERS HAVE SO MUCH HATE AND TRASHED THE CLINTONS AND HER SUPPORTERS ALL THROUGH THIS RACE. NOW WE GET THE LAST LAUGH.

Ben   June 2nd, 2008 3:39 pm ET

HRC was out the moment Ickes became her rep!! Disgrace in language reflects alot on Ickes.

BubbiSmith   June 2nd, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Now this was well said Louis

Hillary has two choices:
1–Bow out as gracefully as possible
2–Dorothy throws a bucket of water on her

As Donna Brasil said, this is not a fight to the bitter end, but a fight to the end. The end is tomorrow.... time to give up Hillary and take #1 above, before # 2 is applied.

Ovitshio Branco from Puerto Rico   June 2nd, 2008 3:37 pm ET

God bless America and God bless Obama for becoming the next

President of This Great Nation the U.S.A

Amen,

Joyce in Florida   June 2nd, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Senator Clinton should NOT by any means dropout even after the two remaining primaries. All of this coming from a former campaign manager of Howard Dean. I don't see any substance there in him. So who cares what he says. If the super delegates can make up their OWN minds after all contests completed, LET THEM. Don't bully them Senator Obama and his followers. That is the lowest of the low. But of course, you already know that. This bullying from your campaign, Senator Obama, is really disgusting. You should be ashamed but you are so full of yourself that you are sickening. HILLARY CLINTON NEEDS TO BE OUR NOMINEE. So why don't you be gracious enough and stop tearing the democratic party apart. It is been YOU and YOU only that has broken the democratic process. GO HILLARY 08!!!!!

Katherine   June 2nd, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Well this white woman is behind Obama all the way

Just say no to Hillary

Dan (TX)   June 2nd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

"Another one bites the dust...and another one down...." :)

All you girls out there need to realize it's about the total number of delegates (pledged and super). Trying to make a point out of popular votes is like saying a football team should win because they have the cutest uniforms – not how many points they score!? Geez, get over it and learn to play by the rules.

Hillary is entitled to "snitch" as many superdelegates as she can.

Mark   June 2nd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Its finally over. Now there are two things to be said:

1. Democrats should unite – last thing needed are 4 more years of McSame.

2. We should not forget that Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton are great people having done a great service to the country. There has been a lot of bitterness recently – but despite their at times tough campagin the Clintons have done a lot for the USA!

Observer   June 2nd, 2008 3:29 pm ET

17,000,000 million People are still supporting Clinton!!!
The majority of whom are white women who will NOT vote for Obama..

However.. The whole world those -17,000,000 supports Barack Obama!

The world needs a completely NEW face in the white house!! Obama has shown incredible leadership, dignity, and respect throughout his OUTSTANDING campaign!

Barack as president would SHATTER BOUNDARIES.. and show the world that America deserves the respect that it has lost in the past 8 years!

KE   June 2nd, 2008 3:29 pm ET

Look inside Iran and radica Islam I see clear difference with other closed country like North Korea for an example. I don't think Sen. Obama understand the difference.

DNCRallyGrrrl   June 2nd, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Run Independant Hillary! We've got your back!!!

" I'm mad at my teacher – he taught me there were 50 states, not 48 and 2 half states. "

KE   June 2nd, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Somehow good people are made to feel guity of their freedom and are in the verge of giving up hard fought freedome for a few group of angry people or the regimes that are crook and delusional.

fafa   June 2nd, 2008 3:26 pm ET

nice piece. Never heard about this Roberts before. Nice and smooth piece to read

Brian Knoxville, TN   June 2nd, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Trippi,

You're incompetent and corrupt.

What happened to all that money Dean raised in '04 for his campaign?

You're a loser.

Shut up.

Realistic   June 2nd, 2008 3:23 pm ET

The fat lady started humming after Virginia and Wisconsin, and started warming up after North Carolina. Tomorrow night, she'll be singing loudly.

Personally, I would prefer Don Meredith's "Turn out the lights, the party's over." Even Bill Clinton senses that the End is Near.

Thomas   June 2nd, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Here is a fact: if you put the popular votes of Obama and Clinton side by side the fact is about 18million people voted for one or the other! If you do the math its 50% / 50%

Thats a close race!

Clinton or McCane 08'

Louis   June 2nd, 2008 3:21 pm ET
