Did the campaign make Obama stronger or weaker?
Did the campaign make Obama stronger or weaker?

(CNN) – It was exactly one year ago today when I moderated the Democratic presidential debate in New Hampshire. At that time, there were eight candidates in the race and all of them were on the stage: Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Bill Richardson, Chris Dodd, Joe Biden, Dennis Kucinich, and Mike Gravel. What a year it’s been.

Now, Obama is on the verge of winning this contest and moving on to the next chapter. The earlier rounds were the playoffs; now comes the championship.

Many political observers believe Obama is a stronger candidate today than he was a year ago. He has certainly improved his campaigning and debating skills. He’s learned a great deal. In short, he’s honed his skills and has improved his game.

But others insist he actually is weaker – having been bloodied up over these many months of a fiercely competitive fight. They point to his latest series of defeats to Clinton, including in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and, most recently, in Puerto Rico. They say he’s lost some of his mojo.

Still, he now has five months to regain it. How he reaches out to Hillary Clinton and her supporters and brings together the Democratic Party in the coming days will be critical.

Wolf, The process definitely strengthen OBAMA. Are you surprised by the flood of positive response (claiming it strengthened) ?

I started out being neutral and ended up despising the clintons more with their intimidation tactics instigating voters on florida and michigan's situation. Shame on clinton campaign management for not upholding democratic party rules to incite pro clinton voters into a frenzy. You can fool some into hysteria and outbursts, but I congratulate the resolve of the general americans to stay the course of doing the right thing and to supporting the much needed new leadership. Clearly the Clintons don't play fair, and her brand of campaign is a constant reminder of old school politics relying more on name Clout on a beauty contest than sincere genuine desire to lead change. Ultimately it is not about sexism as much as wanting to preserve the whites in a "white house". WIth Obama's imminent success, I am able to witness the emergence of a new america which is strong enough embrace the best candidate regardless of race and age. Congratulations to americans who takes greater responsibility for their future by engaging in this historic process.

YES, it strengthened him to the sleezeball tactics that will be waiting for him coming from the Republicans – wait a sec – Hillary used to be a Republican! What a coincidence! Keep her as a VP on the ticket? Sure let's transplant the cancer to another part of the body once the doctor removes it too. The reason he won the nomination is because he wasn't her nor anything she represents. And her "foaming at the mouth" supporters still vow to vote McCain anyway! Roe vs Wade anyone? Omaba for, McCain against. Yes, I don't like the TV show I'm watching so I'll gouge my own eyes out with a fork to spite those dastardly TV programmers! They really should follow through and form their own party like they threatened to: Bitter Old White Women Of the World. (BOW WOW) It would be like taking the burnt crust off the cake, who'd miss it?

Jeremiah Wiggins, NYC   June 3rd, 2008 8:07 pm ET

It absolutely helped him. He may have been used to the "rough and tumble" of Chicago politics but now he's used to the lasciviousness of national presidential politics. It will be a landslide for Obama come November. And any democrat who says they'll vote for McCain will be voting away their reproductive rights, any hope for health care, the future of social security and a litany of other social Democratic issues. Not to mention the hope of ending our military presence around the world. Hillary may have been the "smart" choice, but voting for McCain out of spite is downright stupid.

Kompari   June 3rd, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Since Barack Obama is convincingly about, "Change" He should cross party lines and consider selecting Collin Powell as his Vice President! Its a bi-partisan ticket.....Now thats CHANGE!!

DC   June 3rd, 2008 7:59 pm ET

The only way Obama will get my vote is if Clinton is on his ticket, otherwise it is McCain all the way, as I dislike Obama more than McCain.

J.D., Washington, D.C.   June 3rd, 2008 7:53 pm ET

The primary season largely hurt Obama. His appeal among independent and GOP voters was much stronger before he was tag-teamed by Clinton and McCain - and before racial politics was injected into the campaign by former President Clinton and others. In addition, he had great appeal among women voters before the Clinton campaign - and former President Clinton - unfairly accused his campaign of sexism.

Pete Zebulon   June 3rd, 2008 7:53 pm ET

6 month ago, Obama was a little known knight in shiny armor, with a church, a spiritual mentor and a message of change and hope.

Now he is the black candidate with problems with traditional Democratic voters, including females, Hispanics, rural voters, blue collars, uneducated, gun owners and small towners.

Favorability ratings in Louisiana are through the cellar, Clinton polls ahead of him and the Republicans believe that there truely is a God, prepared to help them in their hour of need. Obama is a gift from heaven for them. Clinton would take away states such as Arkansas, West Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio, even Nevada.

Obama is a liberal and they can handle liberals. Especially those with enough baggage to make Karl Rove salivate.

pam   June 3rd, 2008 7:47 pm ET

She WILL GO OUT IN STYLE! Hillary has received (most) of the votes she has worked her bottom off for and now shows what a popular formidable opponent she is. We have not seen the last of Hillary. History will give a nod to this strong women and ALL her accomplishments past and yet to come. She may not be president, but this women will go far and we have not seen or heard the last from her. I'm SO GLAD she'll be in the ranks (HIGH UP) fighting for the American people!!!

Pistoff   June 3rd, 2008 7:44 pm ET

Strengthened.

He is finishing the primary season with his integrity in tact. He is righteous.

Evelyn   June 3rd, 2008 7:43 pm ET

Senator Obama reminds me of Bush, Jr.–someone un vetted full of promises but with no real experience.
I am shocked he is about to clinch the nomination.
And I will not support him- even though I am a life long Democrat.
He is too much of a wild card with no experience.

Stefan Flosbach   June 3rd, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Obama always tried to keep the primary season short and sweet. He tried to push her out, before the Rev. Wright issue broke. Now we know why he was so eager to be seen as the presumptive candidate, because the party would have protected him if he had been the candidate back then. Well, the media did that job.

To everyone who is able to read poll results, it is clear that Clinton is the stronger candidate against McCain, but here the lemming instinct of the Democrats takes over. This and the "Yes-we-made-a-mistake-but-now-it-is-too-late-so-lets-pretend-that-everything-is-fine-and-maybe-nobody-
notices-it"

They already see the iceberg, but feel that changing the course would be face loss.

Obama is a damaged good and does not stand a chance against McCain. Sad but true

Tully, San Leandro , CA   June 3rd, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Weaker or stronger, does it make any difference? This is just the primaries. Wait until the SwiftBoat comes out , we'll see true test. The only thing that will help Obama win the White House is by reconciling with Senator Clinton and asking her to be his VP, like it or not. Politics is dirty . The old boys club, some female members of the GOP who wanted to run but were afraid to lose to Hillary, the media circus, the DNC have helped put Obama on the pedestal. He'd better win in a landslide in November or the joke will be on him. So let start mending fences now.

Emeka, London UK   June 3rd, 2008 7:40 pm ET

By the test of fire, fine steel is made (Abraham Lincoln). Obama has gone through a channel that can proppel him to face any challenge in life.

November is for the people to choose real CHANGE.

This is what the likes of the Dr. King's and the late Kenedy's would have been glad and grateful to witness. Thanks for your calmness and mature approach. I owe you another book purchase on "Election Preparation and Attitude" or anything you wish to call it.

GO OBAMA 08!!!

Sue   June 3rd, 2008 7:38 pm ET

"It really strenghtened him. She aired out all of his dirty laundry, and now he his fully vetted and ready for McSame."

...you've got to be joking. Thanks to his surrogates and the media, we haven't even begun to scratch the surface of the 'junk in his trunk.' But I'm sure McCain will be much better than the almighty DNC at getting to the truth of this guy.

S.Cameroonians   June 3rd, 2008 7:37 pm ET

My friend you are stupid.Someone who is just new in the political scene and a four year senator ousting a Fabulous Dynasty in American politics and you need to be told he is Strong?Someone with little or no experience that you yourself pronounced?
Someone who has undergone the heaven and hell surgery of the Clintons?
But One thing Obama needs to be proud of is the school of taught that the Clintons registered him into if not McSame was impatiently waiting in the labor room. Now he is in the re.animation ward.
One big thing McSame should avoid with Obama if he wants to win Obama is attacking him on irrelevant issues because those are the things that the Clintons did and failed and when she discovered,it was late. You see in the last primaries Obama has been doing very little though he was fighting a double battle with John Hillary Clinton.
Those who thought flag pins and others were solutions to american problems should put their fingers inside behind down there and get the stench.

NEVER OBAMA THE LIAR   June 3rd, 2008 7:37 pm ET

obama is to much of a fool to know how to run this country.

Mark   June 3rd, 2008 7:34 pm ET

Though Clintons made the campaign very divisive, still the long primary was good for Obama. Few people knew him. Now, most people know who he is. Certainly, many would decide not to vote for him. But if it was not for this long primary, many, who bacame his staunch supporters, would not vote for him because they did not know who he was.

raymond   June 3rd, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Obama has had all his fair share of politics. i think the primary season really helped him a lot, i don't think he has to apologise to anybody. these election is not about him, is about the UNITED STATE OF AMERICA . so if any voter thinks Obama is the cause of what is happening in the country today. they may vote for the Republican. Clinton and Obama are in the same party Democrat, with the same Policy. so those it matter who wins the nomination," all that matters is americans want changes period" so don't let any sentimental issues mess up good things coming ahead. God bless U.S.A

ANNE................TEXAS   June 3rd, 2008 7:30 pm ET

IT PLEASES ME TO SEE YOUNG AMERICANS VOTING OBAMA, IT SURELY REVEALS HOW FAR WE HAVE COME FROM " PREJUDISM AND THE OTHER "ISMS". MY EYES HAVE SEEN THE GREAT FUTURE THAT IS AHEAD. WE ALL INCLUDING THE DEMOCRATS MUST RALLY TOGETHER TO VOTE BUSH AND HIS LIKES OUT . AMERICA MUST BE STRONG AND ENVIABLE AGAIN IN THE WORLD. I LOVE THIS COUNTRY.

Ryan   June 3rd, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Well, he's lying more and more, so I guess he's becoming a better politician. His cult-following refuses to believe anything bad about him, so I guess he has that working for him... but then again, 20% of the nation still thinks Bush is doing a good job. Guess they're pretty similar in that regard.

Mary (Louisiana)   June 3rd, 2008 7:28 pm ET

I don't think God put this man in the position to run this Country to let him fell. So all you people that say you believe in God let go and let God handle his sons business now. We are all God's children.

Phillip   June 3rd, 2008 7:28 pm ET

Obama was the underdog throughout most of the primary season. So I wouldn't read too much into some mild difficulty in finishing it off- the big dog never goes down without a fight. Obama will actually begin the general with a cushy lead, though, and with his honed skills I don't think McCrap will stand much chance.

NEVER OBAMA THE LIAR   June 3rd, 2008 7:28 pm ET

Obama is much stronger since battling Clinton (R-NY) this past year. He's stronger. Now to the championship!

Sarah   June 3rd, 2008 7:16 pm ET

Before the inexcusable behavior of the Democratic party with regards to Senator Clinton, I may have been inclined to vote for Obama. Now I feel there is no way I could support Obama, nor could I support any member of the Democratic party. I am appauled by the way they manipulated the system in order to push Hillary Clinton out–blatantly ignoring the sexist attitudes of their own party and of the media, while firing harshly back at anyone who even mentioned the word "race." And their manipulation of the rules in order to ensure that Obama was the candidate is appauling–I remember when they argued that because Gore won the popular vote (nevermind the Electoral votes), he should be the next President. When Hillary Clinton applies the same logic her party did a mere four years ago, she is called "egotistical" and told it was a "last ditch effort" in order to selfishly obtain the nomination. What hogwash! Obama can try all he wants to win back Hillary Clinton supporters; it is not going to do him any good. I'm sure there will be some who will join his camp in an effort to keep John McCain out of the White House, but I for one will not be one of those people. Ron Paul 08.

Jesse   June 3rd, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Througout the who primary Obama and his campaign portrayed Clintons as liar. Why does Obama need the support of liars now?
Why????????????????

Where is Obama's new kind of politics?
I don't think Hillary, specially Pres. Clinton should work for Obama at all. There was too much insulting comments for him during last 5 months. Obama showed absolutely no respect to him. Democrats should realise that with Bill Clinton democrats would have been nothing, none, Nader, today.

Robin in Fl   June 3rd, 2008 7:13 pm ET

He dethroned the Clinton's! Even if he looses in the fall, he will have A LOT more clout when he returns to the senate.

Carmelle_ Margate, FL   June 3rd, 2008 7:08 pm ET

This makes him extremely stronger after all he is Barack Obama, he who brings on change that’s when all the humble people come out and rejoice and be proud that maybe America can change from it's scars. Sen. Clinton should back off and let him take this in without having to construct criticism. It's unfair, it’s un-American and at a time like this and if it were her she'd fell the same way.

Paula in Seattle   June 3rd, 2008 7:03 pm ET

The long primary campaign was harmful because it stirred up such animosity on the part of those who think that Hillary was somehow entitled to the nomination (which is patently ridiculous). Obama was and is strong, and he is our only hope for fresh, decent leadership. Clinton absolutely should not be his running mate. Everything she has done during this campaign has demonstrated how unsuitable in character and conduct she is to be either president or vice president. She certainly doesn't fit his platform of positive change and an end to divisive politics. The Clintons had their turn in the White House. I hope the country has moved beyond the Clinton/Bush era and will start fresh. Hillary has done her best to poison the well, but Obama has kept his hands remarkably clean and will continue his signature style of courtesy, kindness, and reaching across boundaries to unite our country around our many shared values.

Get informed people! VOTE DEMOCRAT!
All these people willing to vote for John McCain must NOT care about the average American's struggles? Let's make the rich richer and continue Bush's FAILED foreign policies! Give me a break! The country has been going down the crapper and will continue until we get a Democrat in the Oval office.

McCain IS NOT a moderate, he sold his soul to the conservatives to walk the line.

Shasta   June 3rd, 2008 5:24 pm ET

I would say he is stronger AND the republicans are weaker. Unless more on Obama's past comes out, there is nothing more to say that has not been said about Obama. Those who weren't going to vote for him based on experience, the Wright debacle, the fact that they think he's Muslim, etc, were already not going to vote for him based on those things, so what else is there to bring up? It's almost like that scene in 8 Mile where Eminem's character says all of the dirt about himself before the other guy can, so the other guy has to walk because there is nothing else to say. So for that, thank you HRC.

...ran a terrific, well organizd campaign

...avoided petty mud-slinging

...never once lost his cool through repeated attacks

...defeated the mighty Clintons

...prompted record voter turnout

Now thats impressive!

Obama will NOT win in November!

errrr   June 3rd, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Definitly he is stronger than what he was one year ago, because he was almost nothing then.

However, he is much weaker as a Democratic nominee, because he and his supporters have successfully alienated millions of democrats, who will either stay at home or vote for MaCcain in the fall.

Diane   June 3rd, 2008 4:50 pm ET

The primary season has definitely weakened Obama. Of course, right now his name is "bigger than life" because he and Hillary are all the news. The media has Obama glorified to the point that come election time, the Dem's will feel blindsided when he loses to John McCain. My prediction is that the Republicans will pull this off again in November. Go John McCain!

OriginalObamaBot   June 3rd, 2008 4:49 pm ET

I don't think that he has been weakened. Senator Obama can handle anything that the Republicans throw at him after running against the Clintons for 15 months.

The Republicans have nothing on him. I'm sure Rove wrote the playbook on how to defeat Hillary! He will win the championship.

TD-Texas   June 3rd, 2008 4:44 pm ET

He is stronger and wiser. To Hillary's credit whether she meant it or not..she made him stronger. Her lies, the media attacks and even his own slip ups all gave him wisdom for the future.

What perplexes me is how everyone says that they are more experienced! Doesn't it take one to DO A JOB to acquire experience? None of them have been president before so NONE of them have experience.

For better or worse....Barack has withstood everything that was thrown at him with grace and tact. There can be no TESTIMONY without the TEST!

It's time to unify...the OBAMA train is headed to DC like it or not!

It made him weaker because he has spent alot of money fighting Billary that could have been used to fight McSame.
Billary claimed to have the popular vote but my question is why is she broke? Obama has more money than Billary and the DNC, so who has the support. As a person in politics it has made him stronger because he had to fight two people on both sides and he is still standing strong. He is ready.

No news media pointed out Sen. Obama's latest series of defeats to Clinton.

"They say he’s lost some of his mojo," but I doubt he had one from the biginning. I hope he learned something.

This whole primary season he did nothing but just show up. The last few months Sen. Obama was reading speeches wrtten by somebody else. And the worst of all he flip flopped constantly probably all the speeches were written by different speech writers and he couldn't even tell. And then, the MSM and the DNC and the GOP all helping him.

The MSM is trying to paint a picture first, but a lousy one. The lousiest one painted in the recent history and we won't forget.

Obama still have a long ways to go.

I BELEIVE HE WILL USE HILLARY IN A POSITION THAT SHE IS STRONG IN AND BELIEVES IN...HEALTHCARE .

THE VP POSITION WILL HAVE TO BE SOMEONE THAT SHADOWS OBAMA; THAT CAN HOLD THE COMPOSURE UNDER PRESSURE, AND BE A TEAM MEMBER W/ OBAMA. I TRULY CAN'T SEE HILLARY BEING ABLE TO PLAY HER ROLE W/OUT BILL WHISPERING IN HER EAR AS TO UNDERMINE WHAT OABAMA HAS AT HAND.

Belle   June 3rd, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Actually, Clinton was able to bring up Obama's weaknesses well before the General Election. If she HAD NOT done that...Obama would have had a little over 2 months to head off the issues...he would have lost big time.

The other controversies...Wright...etc...those were of Obama's own making.

Chris, Middletown, CT   June 3rd, 2008 4:40 pm ET

I really think that the primary highlighted how easily led many are – HRC supporters trump from the tallest towers that she has "experience" – when in fact she does not (moved to NY because in her home state of Arkansas..they would not throw a senate position to her) – she floats the idea that Obama is a muslim....which is untrue...yet HRC supporters trumpet from the highest towers....she states that people who are not for her are gender bias....when in fact we love the idea of a woman....we'd just like one that told the truth once in a while....and Wolf...shame on you for pandering to Hillary in a selfless attempt to be her press secretary....could you of thrown more softballs to her in the debates....omg...you are in the Clintons back pocket...

Hillary only cares about Hillary. Time to move on. He's not weaker. A poll out today shows him beating McCain nationally. He doesn't need Hillary or her bitter, scorned, racists women voters.

Wolfe,
From Ohio in the "rust belt", I would have insisted that Obama campaign more within Appalachia on a one-to-one basis. When he campaigns with a double edged combo– big inspiring rallies and smaller venues, he connects with people. He is bright, inspiring , and has managed a brilliant forward thinking movement and a campaign that engages thousands of new voters and supporters. Can you tell who I support? How peculiar, since, according to your famous CNN slice/dice exit polls ,I fit into the "older white women" category. Actually, as in most races, it is not your form and speed during the contest, but who is first across the finish line–
Who will that be?? YES. We CAN!

Obama has been to the edge of the stratosphere in relation to the democratic nomination and he is BACK!! By GOD, he is STRONGER!!

David S., CA   June 3rd, 2008 4:38 pm ET

I think it took alot of chinks out of his armor. I was impressed with him at first but now that I have heard his ideology I'm worried that we will be looking at a 2nd Jimmy Carter Presidency. Obama's way of dealing with all of the economic woes of this Coutry is bigger government laid on the backs of increased taxes for the "wealthy". The federal government has shown it cant manage anything. They cant pay their bills now and they want to expand services? I see how bad the fed manages the VA hospitals and they want to take over healthcase?

Reagan said it best, "government is not the solution, government is the problem". It is government that has not allowed us to use our plentiful natural resources, government that hamstrung energy development, government that refuses to defend our borders, government that continues to put more and more people on the dole and use it to extort more votes, government that forces alternative lifestyles on the mainstream population against our wishes, government that takes away 50% of our income and still keeps itself in debt, government that caters to unions and special interests creating a hostile work environment and sending businesses and jobs overseas. Government is growing like a cancer and we see our freedoms erooding away as a result and we sit there like cattle letting it happen.

Look at the problems this country has and you can bet a government institution is behind it. I say get the government out of our lives. The Republicans abandoned this principle so my vote goes Libertarian for the first time this year.

Greg Pottstown, Pa.   June 3rd, 2008 4:38 pm ET

Obama supporters will support him no mater what he dose. They don't care about the issues. If you want to change politics why do I read hate on this site every day.If you want politics to change and not be the way it is now then open your eyes because he is running now. Ican't tell the difference between the way he runs a campaign and any other runs a campaign. Can you?

Jared   June 3rd, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Wolf,

Although the Clintons have certainly bullied and defile Obama's name, in the end, John McCain can't compete with the smear tactics of the Clintons. All and all, the revolution is on! Obama is taking this election in November.

D Montoya, El Paso, TX   June 3rd, 2008 4:37 pm ET

It did weaken him. Clinton used a large demographic to her advantage to damage him and try to over take him in delegates. She strengthened them against him at the perfect opportunity where they could have sided with him. If clinton would have dropped out after March 4th imagine what this would look like already. He would be on top of his game but now he only 4 months to do good before the november elections, and Hillary has taken a large part of the base and pitted them against him. Will it be enough to weaken him where he will lose the election? I dont think so but it has weakened him.

President McCain   June 3rd, 2008 4:37 pm ET

skunkrat The Marine   June 3rd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

STRONGER! He will be fine. He is prepared and can go toe to toe with McSame and the RNC. BRING IT ON. Go Obama/ Clinton.

Peter Damoah-Afari   June 3rd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

It did strengthen him as can be seen from the results. McCain will curse his stars this year for having to compete with Obama. McCain will loose galantly, and that will be a record in the history of American politics.

Gob bless Senator Obama!!!
God bless America!!!
God bless the entire universe!!!

Tom CA   June 3rd, 2008 4:36 pm ET

This Tom is not the other Tom.I think Mr. Obama si getting stronger and stronger and heading all the way to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Good for our Country and good for all Americans. God save America

Lee-- Dallas, TX   June 3rd, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Both. He's stronger in knowing how and when to hit back... Not going to mention those other things... Today is a happy day for the Democratic Party. And Hil is a big reason this is going to be so much sweeter.

Barack *08/12

Eric   June 3rd, 2008 4:35 pm ET

The thing I like about Obama is that he has not changed! The strength he has is his honesty, humility and consistency. I know he will work for all Americans. I like him in particular because he almost always starts to explain himself by using the word 'We' not 'I' in putting forth solutions and ideas. The only thing that is weakened or strengthened is our perspective of the man! He has not wavered in who he is or what he desires to project.

Stacy Clarks   June 3rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

BOTH!

Weaker in that the very unfair controvery with Wright might have made him appear different in some people's eyes (although you CANNO attribute other people's views to him)

STRONGER in that he now knows what to expect from the other side, has had time to perfect his argument against all the unfair attacks, knows what audiences he needs to target, and can take a punch, as HIllary has thrown many his way!!

LET'S GO OBAMA!!! TO THE WHITE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Drew, Central FL   June 3rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Oh c'mon Wolf. This is just ridiculous. He is most definitely stronger. You can't be weak running against a Clinton. Hillary has helped forge him. I liken it to Japanese swordmaker forging a katana by folding the metal.

Damion K. Miles   June 3rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

I think that Barack's losses in the states mentioned is directly due to the racism that is still deeply imbedded in those states. As a man, Barack Obama wants the same things that everyone else in the country wants – peace, the ability to earn a good living and a future for your children. These are things that all Americans want, regardless of skin color. The policies that he and Hillary have are so similar that the average person couldn't tell one from the other if they read them. It's clear that the more progressive, educated people of this country aren't afraid of a Black man in any way, shape or form. A majority of the people in the states mentioned are very isolated – geographically as well as mentally. That is not a knock against Barack Obama, that is a knock against the America of old. We are beginning to make strides as a people and the fact that there was a woman and a Black person running for the highest office in the land says so. Racism, whether we like to admit it or not, is what has made America what it is today. Good or bad, we are what we are. Whether Barack Obama becomes president or not, the writing is on the wall – America is changing for the better.

Chut Pata   June 3rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Stronger. Billary spilled all the dirt that even Carl Rove could not find. So there is nothing left for McBush now.

Everything the Republicans are now saying has already been said by Billary and answered by Obama. McBush is left with no option but to talk about real issues like war in Iraq, tax breaks for the very rich, and health care. McBush will easily be defeated on these issues.

No Hillary   June 3rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

This primary made Obama very very strong because:

1) He established offices all across the nation to push against McCain

2) Every aspect of Obama's life and politic got attacked in the worst way possible and he learned to defend

3) He became a much better debater

4) He quit his controversial church

5) Every American got a good understanding of what Obama's politic was about: HOPE, CHANGE

6) Once we re-unit eand heal our internal wounds, we will beat McCain by a LANDSLIDE-LANDSLIDE LANDSLIDE.

Democrat in 08!   June 3rd, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Strengthen him Hillary threw everything she had at him and he's still standing. It is not his fault the party is divided he started as a uniter and throughout has been very respectful to Hillary. Sometimes a little to much would have like to see him throw more punches. But he probably didn't because she is a democrat and not a republican. Sure there were fights but mostly from the Clinton camp. Also their positions were very similar on many issues it was harder to attack her. But with Mccain they are on opposite sides of the issues and Obama will win here. Especially when it comes to the economy even foreign policy he has proven to be smarter than Mccain who runs his mouth and than makes mistakes.

MILLIONS HAVE GOTTEN TO KNOW HIM AND COME TO LOVE HIM AND THE HOPE OF CHANGE THAT HE REPRESENTS UNLIKE CLINTON. TO MAKE HER HIS VP CHOSE WOULD UNDERMIND ALL THAT HE REFLECTS. HE JUST NEED TO KNOW THIS AND NOT ALLOW HIMSELF TO BECOME DESPERATE IN THINKING HE NEEDS HER. PICK ANOTHER WOMAN IF NEED BE JUST NOT THIS ONE. But the racial divide is exposed, all the other trivia is exposed... and if THIS is all they have on Obama, then they are going to get beat like a drum.

Terry from Illinois   June 3rd, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Mika   June 3rd, 2008 4:30 pm ET

I believe Senator Barack is a much stronger candidate than last year. He's shown the ability to carry out a decent and honorable campaign which is more than I can say for Hillary because she did attack him unfairly. I will vote Democrat no matter what. All of the Hillary supporters saying they'll back McCain, that's just plain ignorant even Hillary does not support this. No matter what we are Democrats first and we should join together and rally behind our nominee and defeat McCain. Unless you want another 3rd Bush term then go ahead and vote McCan. But only blame yourself if you lose your homes, cars, jobs as he set out to continue Bush's failed policies and personal agendas.......

Barack/Hillary or Hillary/Barack they are both excellent candidates and we should be proud of them both.

Hillary can not win without Barack's voters and Barack will not win without Hillary's voters simple as that.

Well, we know one thing: during his first year in the US Senate he did NOTHING; and now his second year in the Senate, he did NOTHING. What in this world has gone wrong with the dem party to select someone they don't even know, and everything we keep hearing about is all nasty stuff and bad for our country.

Less, Austin Tx   June 3rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Obama is a good person and it shows. I don't think the topic should be "how he reaches out to Hillary" but how Hillary reaches out to him and her supporters.

Hillary is the one that separated her supporters from the democractic party, because it was all about how she was better than this person or how she was better in doing that...

Hillary should have campaigned to the whole democratic party on both sides as one, instead of focusing on herself only, which she has been doing from the very beginning and even up until now.

Jim   June 3rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

I cannot vote for him, I will be writing in Hillary Clinton thanks to the DNC and the media. She is the best candidate.

Mel   June 3rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

OBAMA NEEDS HER!!!! – and her 17 million voters.

She is the REAL power house in the Democratic Party NOW!!

She can easy not endorse Obama or say nothing. Obama cannot win without the voters she has attracted !!!! Obama cannot win without her !!! No other second place contender has attracted as many voters and they are awaiting some indication from her. ALL of Obama's friends need to keep their ,mouths closed and say ONLY good things about the Clintons. What if she took her supporters (most of the 17 million) and began a third party or again, not supported Obama.

Yet, we forget, McCain has recently made positive and good public comments about her, with respect and admiration. Obama's friends, superdelegates, and supporters can trash Hillary all they want, BUT they must remember that 17 million support her, including me.

Arkansas Undertaker   June 3rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Tea Party   June 3rd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

I think it sharpened him... I mean he's honed "Hope and Change" from mere simple words into glittering generalities. "Thousand Points of Light," anyone?

I think he is weaker. Sure he gives great speeches but they are empty words to me and I am sure to others as well. Still don't know all about him and his secretive friends nor what he can do for our country. He is not experienced yet. I hope that there is an upset tonight in the final contests. Just let the super delegates make up their own minds AFTER the contests are done. No more bullying and fear tactics from the Obama camp. I believe that has been happening from Day 1. If Senator Obama does become the nominee, the only way he will become President is if Hillary Clinton is on the ticket as V.P. Then and only then will the democrats be back in the White House. GO HILLARY 08!!!!!!!!!!!!

JP SW   June 3rd, 2008 4:25 pm ET

He might have enough strength to fall over the finish line. Of course with the help of Pelosi, Reid and Dean who openly conspired to defeat Clinton.

Pelosi, if you think people were not aware of your jealousy, thing again. Hopefully, you will be vacating the senate very soon. You're an irritant to watch. Votes on both side hated a turncoat. Worse, a jealous, spiteful woman.

at first i believed it weakened him, though, looking back on it now i don't see it that way anymore.

the rev wright trinity church thing was going to come out sooner or later, so it is good that it came out when it did, rather than in september or october.

also, any perceived notion that obama and his team aren't 'tough' enough to take on the republican smear machine has been largely put to rest. here is a youthful candidate that was largely unknown who managed to topple the democratic brand name: clinton.

It made him stronger....and if the silly bad stuff that was found out about him during the primaries is all that can be said, he won't have to put up with defending himself. We have a choice between someone that is positive and willing to listen vs. someone that will continue the last eight years. Seems pretty easy to decide. Can't have too many sports analogies, can we?

The racial divisions exposed during the primary may very well have a positive effect on BO - he knows that significant numbers of whites view him with suspicion, and deservedly so, considering his political genesis as a Chicago "community organizer" and racist comments by his wife and supporters.

To be truthful, should he be elected, he would have to govern as a "white" President. How ironic.

Yes he is weaker now because we have seen his real colors. He has divided the Party and the American society polarizing us like nobody else had done for a long time.

We will learn more about him in the weeks to come and it will be a nighmare for the Democrats. The DNC will realize what a big mistake it has been to have Obama as their nominee.

Now he's a shoe-in because the media, and the lemmings that can't think for themselves will vote for this clown.

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah   June 3rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

As a football coach for 19 years, one of thing I have learned is this. In every contest there is a teacher and a student. Hillary and Bill Clinton for the last 28 years have always been the teachers. However, in this contest they are they are now the students, Obama has overcame insurmountable odds. He has overcome his race, age, experience, his wired name, his religious affiliations, his gaffes and one the fiercest competitors in political history in America the Clinton Dynasty.

We must all understand that what Obama has done is just purely remarkable and should not be taken lightly. As a man of color myself I stand in awe and want to thank every American that can see beyond the outer layer of Obama and who has judged him by what’s in his heart and not by his outer layer.

To all the Hillary Clinton Supporters I hope you all can over come you disappointment and anger before November. I will be the first with my arms open and embrace all of you. I urge all of us Obama supporters to reach out to all the Clinton people and bring them in with love and understanding. Tell the Clinton supporters we need them and we can’t do it with out them. Welcome them to a new and better America and the Obama campaign that is set to lift America to a Higher Ground!

God Bless you all!
God Bless America!

Obama has always been strong. You people just didn't get it. Obama never wanted to lash out at another Democrat candidate so he kept his composure but he will unleash with McCain. Look at Hillary for instance she used the kitchen sink strategy and now wants to make nice and be his VP. Just to make history. If I were Hillary, I would feel ashame after saying Obama was not electable – then why would you want to be on the ticket with him and it is NOT to help the party win in November because he can win without her on the ticket.

Keifer S.   June 3rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

It pains me to say this, Wolf, but yes, it has weakened him. But you would be to if you had to dodge kitchen sinks thrown at you for 6 months. Obama has come out of this on top, and what America will realize is that 2008 is the cultivation of 7 1/2 years of George W. Bush. America will realize that we do not want another 4 years of economic desparity and war, and will make the smart choice and vote for Obama. And five months to convince voters to support him is more than enough time to put things right again.

Dave in Maryland   June 3rd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Definitely strengthen him.

It took so long for you to get here... I forgot what I had to say... Still you have a right to my Comment.. It's a Joke. Borack Obama? Commander in Cheif.... The USA is slipping.... The Super Power who slipped into Oblivion... China.... Russia.... The Middle East...
You chose Obama?????

oil rules   June 3rd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Wolf is so intuitive – not. The Obama kool-aid drinkers don't care what was brought out in the primaries. If Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, Michelle, etc., didn't turn them, nothing will. The lying abput Wright and how he couldn't disown him and then threw him under the bus....Not to mention an incredibly far left Senate voting record, absolutely NO experience running a company, state government, lemonade stand, or anything else. Let's not forget his RACIST remarks about the people of WV, USA. He is somebody's puppet and will be just a co-president to Hillary.

Chris from NY   June 3rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

It strenghtened him but slowed his momentum. I believe once the primaries are over he will gain back his momentum. I think the momentum was slightly deflated so he could build one that will last. If he had continued the way he was going he may not last in to November. But now that he's going to rebuild, he will come back better than before.

Proud1of 26% in WV   June 3rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Obama was like a good sporting team that started off and built a good lead, had a coulpe of injuries and a couple very un fair calls by the officials. He survived the bad calls and the injuries, scored a few more points and ran the clock out.It works all the time.

Melanie, TX   June 3rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Oh, he's definitely stronger. And now that it will truly be him against McCain, I think we are going to see the political fighter that lies inside him. No way he made it in Illinois without picking up the skills he's going to need to lay out his opponent. And I am so proud of him for not doing it to Clingon. I mean Clinton. (oops)

Yes He Can
Yes We Can!

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   June 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

It certainly did bring out some issues that he needs to work on. It also shows how stupid some of the issues are; does he wear a flag pin? Does it really matter if he does or not? It shows that he will be blamed for things his supporters and friends have said that he has no control over. The campaign (I hope) has become aware of this and should now have learned to fight and counter these things.

he will win the election

VA WASP SUPPORTING OBAMA   June 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

WOLF, IS THIS IN JEST OR ARE YOUR SERIOUS? CONSIDERING ALL YOU AND OTHERS OF THE MEDIA HAVE POUNDED HIM WITH I THINK HE HAS DONE A MARVELOUS JOB AND HAS STOOD STRAIGHT AND TALL. I AM REMINDED THAT IN EARLY MAY CNN SPENT THE WHOLE EVENING FROM 5PM TIL 10PM, ON ONE SEGMENT AFTER THE OTHER TALKING ABOUT THE REV. WRIGHT CONTROVERSY. ANYONE LESS THAN SEN. OBAMA WOULD HAVE CRUMBLED BUT KEPT HIS HEAD ABOVE THE CONTROVERSY AND KEPT ON KEEPING ON.

Brian from Fort Mill, S.C.   June 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

We know more about Obama now, so it seems that he's weaker. But he has learned a lot since last year.

Think of it this way. Hillary has won several states late in the game. If he were weaker, then more superdelegates would have gone for her.

John Smith   June 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Wolf, for quite some time now, I have admired and followed almost all the shows you host. I am now over 50 years and a professional. Recently, I have been so turned off by your advocate for a "dream ticket" that I feel like throwing up each time I hear you talk.

Given your "extensive" knowledge of history of the Clintons, how can you "wish" such a thing on Obama and the Dem party! Can you please back-off, really, now– please back-off. It would be a nasty nightmare, not a dream ticket! Thank you for your understanding; God Bless.

Jerry   June 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Obama is the strongest candidate he will bring Hillary supporter together we must win the white house, Obama was going against all odd with Bill and Hillary and the republicans, and the media teaming up on him but look what happen Obama going to win the demoncratic nonimee then to white house

Obama 08

Tjaye in LA   June 3rd, 2008 4:16 pm ET

This strengthened him because he had a lot of mess to wade through and he came through without getting down and dirty, without resorting to lies and manipulation and without falling apart. He showed true strength, which is strength of character and spirit.

His Mom clearly did an awesome job with him.

Valerie - St. Louis, MO   June 3rd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

He has reached out to the Clinton's and their campaign, however, the Clinton's are not about to concede defeat because they are not used to losing. It is a sad day in America when people like this can be held in such high regard by the electorate. It is only because she has run on Bill's record that she has gotten as far as she has. Many of my friends who support her, are doing so because of her husband's record in the white house not because of anything she has actually done herself. Saaaddd!

David O   June 3rd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

It really strenghtened him. She aired out all of his dirty laundry, and now he his fully vetted and ready for McSame.

Kiah   June 3rd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Strengthen. He would have run a campaign similar to Walter Mondale had Clinton not used her Republican tactics and he quickly realized that he needed to fight back to stay alive. To his credit while Clinton still paints a picture of a weaker candidate, his supporters know better and he is still a strong candidate. I think he needed this primary to season him a little bit b/c he wasn't used to the harshness of campaigns.

He has now proven to McCain's pathetic attacks that he can take a hit and keep moving.

Rudy NYC   June 3rd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

It could only help him in the battle to come. The primaries raised talking points, but McCain's talking points are yet to come out. It should be an interesting series of debates.

I find Obama more statesman-like.
McCain to be more of a brawler.

Mark   June 3rd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

It has strengthened him, he has beaten the best now... McCain is not even close...

Hillary was a harder person to beat based on policies, and her experience...

McCain will be a cakewalk especially if you base it on his policies

(Mark my words over the next few days or weeks, McCain will try and distance himself from Bush, and those in the white house now will mock his policies, as if they are too far left of theirs...note I say this because its a tactic they would most certainly use, do not let this fool you, McCain is EXACTLY like BUSH!)

Democrats 08'

Hillary for Secretary of State!

Rick in Florida   June 3rd, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Definitely the length and intensity of the Dem race STRENGTHENED him. He could get out in front of, and deal with, bad stories (Wright, Bitter, Ayres, Pfleger, etc) and at the same improve as a debater (having gone through 22 debates), and hone his "message". Without Hillary's attacks and intensity Obama would have been a WEAKER candidate. For this ONE THING he should thank Hillary.

JS   June 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

I think the contest has helped him, and the party. If Obama wins in November, it will not be in spite of Hillary putting up such a fight. It will be in part BECAUSE she put up a fight. Basically, he has never really been challenged in politics before this race. He muscled his way into the nomination for his Illinois state senate seat by legal challenges to the other candidates related to their petition signatures. Having ousted the incumbent from his own party without a primary election contest, he was unopposed in a safe democratic seat thereafter. Then, he faced little opposition in his senate race. It seems clear to me that he is a much tougher candidate because of his contest against Hillary Clinton. He himself has said that many times. But many Obama supporters are too blinded by infantile hero worship and rock star adulation to see this for what it really is.

Ali from NJ   June 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

I think that if Clinton was on the ticket it wouldn't help him

The Democrats blew it when they didn't count the votes in Michigan and Florida.

Whether the news is talking about it or not, those states are angry.
They have felt cheated and thety do blame Obama.
He could have fought to seat them too.

Clinton supporters know that. They will not vote for Obama as President if Hillary were to be VP.

I was hoping Hillary would decline the offer of VP.
This man has been unfair to her and her supporters.

Debbie,NJ   June 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Thanks to Hillary for running like a Republican it strengthened him. I'm sure McCain is thanking her too for giving him a strategy he can use. He doesn't have to work hard at all. She gave him the ammo he needs to fight Obama with,

felicia   June 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

It made him better. The man is shining!!!!! He's a breath of fresh air for our country!

Linda Esen   June 3rd, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Wolf ; He will take it all the way to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenu ; Americans will once again be proud to be American.

Caryn, WDC   June 3rd, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Of course biased Wolf Blitzer would end this piece claiming that Obama was bloodied.

Obama will be just fine and we're going to win in November. Fighting this primary against Hillary the Beast was the best practice that we could have hoped for!

Jim   June 3rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

If the primary hasn't "strengthened' Obama, then running against John McCain and the failed Bush policies definately will.

ah screw it...   June 3rd, 2008 4:12 pm ET

W/e swift vote the republicans tried (and clinton) he has overcame. Even some of his own slip up's, he definately withstood the test, and these last 2 primaries will prove it...
