(CNN) - Sen. Robert Byrd, D-West Virginia, will remain in the hospital for several days, according to a statement from his Senate office.

“At the recommendation of his physicians, Senator Robert C. Byrd will remain in the hospital for several more days for monitoring and antibiotic treatment for a mild infection," said the statement.

“Byrd is alert, talking with staff and in good spirits and looks forward to getting back to work as soon as possible.”

Byrd was hospitalized Monday night after the 90-year-old Democrat from West Virginia appeared lethargic when he arrived at his Senate office in preparation for a vote on global warming, the spokesman said.

May God be with you and bless you. I also agree with Tjaye about about him hopefully being able to live to see the fruits of his labor and personal growth.

I love Senator Byrd!! He is one of the few americans in power today that I hold to the utmost respect. I hope he gets better America needs him.

peakarach,des moines   June 3rd, 2008 5:09 pm ET

I think Mr.Byrd and Ted Kennedy need to retire period.

If Hillary is not the nominee, all 18 million of us strong can do is vote for McCain so we can send a strong message to the party leader and the whole media not to mess with Hillary and her supporter ever again.

Go Hillary!

Term limits, please. Save us from millionaire fossils barely held up by their own suits.

Tjaye in LA   June 3rd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

I post a blessing to Sen. Byrd and CNN moderators delete it??? But you let the mean comments about him stay on?? Really; if we aren't violating the Terms, you should be more fair and not just pick and choose.

This man came from being a KKK leader to changing his heart and mind and eventually endorsing a Black man for the POTUS. I would be even sadder if he didn't live to see the fruits of his labor and personal growth.

Blessing to Sen. Byrd and his family.

Latest update = Hillary calling Obama to pardon her stupid supporters. She quoted... " My supporters are stupid and dumb.. or why would they support me in the first place, when I am clearly lying and desperate ".
Please dont be mad at me and I will be waiting for your gracious call for the VP Position.

Obama quoted " Hillary, may God bless your weak soul and help you recovering from your evil thoughts and deeds ". I am not mad at you..but forget about the VP position. I dont want 8 years of nightmare.

Sen Byrd, you have served your country well. Just go ahead and rest.

R.O.B.   June 3rd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

It's always bad news to hear that someone is hospitalized. But at 90 years old, he should have been retired 15 – 20 years ago. This is just a prime example of people not wanting to step down from their position of power and let a younger generation take over.

Bubba   June 3rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

New Jersey.....that explains it....

Ricki   June 3rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Everyone prays for you to get well. I love people of my father's generation like Sen. Byrd. These people for the most part have such integrity, honor and respect for people. God Bless you. The words of support that Senator Byrd said for Sen. Kennedy were so touching and honest and I'm sure that everyone is now wishing the same for him.

No Hillary   June 3rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

As long as he votes AGAINST the global warming bill, I'm for a speedy recovery. WE THE PEOPLE don't need him there if he'll vote for hurting the economy and rasing the ciost of gas.

Amber   June 3rd, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Bless his heart! He's such a good man and a great public servant. I pray for his wellbeing and recovery.

If we could, each and every one of us, learn just one thing from your long walk through life in this country and your epic tenure in our government how much better off would this country be? This man is living proof that a Man that can not change, can not move forward!

Keep moving forward
America is behind you,
Thank You

Sen. Byrd... my dear, dear, friend..... I love you...... I miss you.

Jo   June 3rd, 2008 3:40 pm ET

We are wishing you the best! Good call on Chaney's inappropriate remark. It is funny that so many people are claiming McCain is too old to be President (Obama's Supporters), and look at your age! You have done a great job even though you endorsed the wrong candidate for President! Clinton 08

Hope you are doing ok senator...hopefully, we won't see negative writing on here from either side.

Politics is one thing, health another.

Lynette   June 3rd, 2008 3:12 pm ET

I pray that Senator Byrd gets well and stronger soon. This nation needs him. Five of the justices of the US Supreme Court need his guidance in how to follow the constitution of the United States.

Steve   June 3rd, 2008 3:10 pm ET

I hope he listens to his doctors better than he listens to his constituents.

Rick in Florida   June 3rd, 2008 3:05 pm ET

I sincerely wish the Senator a speedy recovery. I wonder if having a lot of starched white sheets around will help mend him more quickly?
We can surely forgive, but its equally justified that we don't forget.

HP Boston   June 3rd, 2008 3:02 pm ET

Take a rest old Byrd, you need it.
Time to retire you can't possibly be getting anything done for the taxpayers.

Prayers for Sen. Byrd   June 3rd, 2008 2:50 pm ET

This man has gone through so many transformations in his lifetime. From being the leader of his local Klansmen to chaning his thinking and eventually endorsing a Black man to be President of our country. I think if anyone deserves to the fruits of his labor and personal growth.

I pray for his health and well being and I pray that he not miss the history that helped to create.

Many blessings

According to Chenney, Senator Byrd must be the patron, grandfather/politician for the entire state of West Virginia, since Chenney said that all West Virginians are related by intermarriage. Seriously, our hearts go out to Senator Byrd and we wish him all the best.
