Sen. Robert Byrd is expected to remain hospitalized overnight.

(CNN) — Sen. Robert Byrd was hospitalized Monday night, a spokesman said.

The 90-year-old Democrat from West Virginia appeared lethargic when he arrived at his Senate office Monday afternoon in preparation for a vote on global warming, the spokesman said.

After the vote, he returned home, where his caregiver noticed the same symptoms, took his temperature and discovered he had a fever, the spokesman said.

Mr Byrd

It has been over a decade since you have been the least bit relevant. Get better.. then get out .

Ilona Proud Canadian   June 3rd, 2008 12:07 pm ET

thetaxpayer,

I simply thank God that there aren't too many people like you!
Your comment is utterly disgusting, and disrespectful, Sen. Byrd is a man who has worked most of his adult life, helping the American People, and this is the respect that you give him!

Sen. Byrd,

We are all praying for you, may God bless and make you well again.

Proud Army and Navy Mom,

I tend to believe that Sen. Byrd has been worrying about Sen. Ted Kennedy, and yes, when you add Cheney's disgusting remark, about in-breeding and West Virginia, it is quite possible that this has taken a toll on his health.

faye, NV   June 3rd, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Our prayer are with you, hope for a speedy recovery.

Get better   June 3rd, 2008 12:02 pm ET

And by the way, it is tacky to turn this into an Obama/McCain whatever thread.

This is about Senator Byrd. You can send prayers and well wishes to this dear man without turning it into a partisan attack.

Get better   June 3rd, 2008 12:00 pm ET

You're in my thoughts Mr. Byrd. Please get well soon!

jesus saves   June 3rd, 2008 11:59 am ET

i hope you begin to feel better senator. you're a true testiment of change

Poor Guy!   June 3rd, 2008 11:56 am ET

I wish him well. I'm not 90, but I'm getting "lethargic," too. Mostly about the DNC, its rules committee, and the entire Democratic party — of which I USED to be a proud member!

JC   June 3rd, 2008 11:55 am ET

My best wishes, Senator Byrd!

Jon - Atlanta, GA   June 3rd, 2008 11:54 am ET

Does it not frighten anyone else that people in their 80s and 90s are running this country?? Very capable airline pilots are required to retire at 65 yet we allow potentially impaired people to make decisions that affect everything from who we can or cannot marry to which country we're going to piss off next. Term limits anyone??

juan   June 3rd, 2008 11:50 am ET

I hope he gets better too but the man IS 90 years old. It's amazing that he can even still walk let alone be an active senator.

Mark Cross Junction VA   June 3rd, 2008 11:42 am ET

I bet none of the well wishs come from people of West Virginia. They know the real Byrd.

Phong Nguyen   June 3rd, 2008 11:41 am ET

After reaching 75 years old, an incumbent is holding young people back! You have done a great job! Give other people a chance to serve the country with new ideas and energy!!!

vict   June 3rd, 2008 11:36 am ET

For all of us we can say everything anythime but when it comes to omebody 's issue please let us be kind because it can happen to anybody

Last Honest Man   June 3rd, 2008 11:34 am ET

Yeah..Yeah….I hope he gets better to.

Get Better and retire!!!!

Geeez…..when are you whimpy people going to stand up and demand that your elected officials (at least) have to stay awake during the Senate hours.

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah   June 3rd, 2008 11:34 am ET

Obama needs you more than anybody, get well soon!

American expat   June 3rd, 2008 11:33 am ET

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Everyone prays for you to get well. I love people of my father's generation like Sen. Byrd. These people for the most part have such integrity, honor and respect for people. God Bless you. The words of support that Senator Byrd said for Sen. Kennedy were so touching and honest and I'm sure that everyone is now wishing the same wishes for him.

Helen   June 3rd, 2008 11:33 am ET

Even though I was surprised when this former racist, endorsed Obama, I wish him well.

Crush Rush   June 3rd, 2008 11:28 am ET

Hope you get well and then do as Zell Miller did and call him out to a duel for calling the people of your state names.

Gabrielle, Lancaster SC   June 3rd, 2008 11:25 am ET

I truely hope evey Hillary supporter doesn't just give in this easy. He stole the election from her because she is a woman. You must write her in when you vote for president!!!!!

Adamantia   June 3rd, 2008 11:05 am ET

I hope Byrd has another good 10-20 years of service left in him. His best work is yet to come.
The "young", "educated" people of this generation are way too ignorant to run this country. They are the "pep rally" generation. Give them a trendy cause and they will buy all the commemorative t-shirts and caps produced for it. Give them a politician who can speek for hours without actually saying anything and they will project any thing they want to believe on his "blank screen". If the presentation is flashy enough, they will cheer "go team go" while being led of the side of a cliff.

susie   June 3rd, 2008 11:02 am ET

It's about time someone younger takes his place. Obama is right age matters, Byrd is to old to be Senator.

Terrence (Winston Salem, NC)   June 3rd, 2008 11:00 am ET

Hope he feels better soon.

maynad   June 3rd, 2008 10:59 am ET

SEN. BYRD:

WHY ARE YOU EVEN IN THE POLITICAL WORLD AT YOU AGE.

YOU HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB BUT IT IS NOW TIME TO GIVE IT UP AND SIT BACK AND ENJOY LIFE. STEP OWN AND WATCH THE PROCESS LIKE EVERY ONE ELSE DOES. YOU DID YOUR TIME , SO NOW ENJOY THE RETIREMENT AND FIND OUT THE REST OF THE AMERICANS LIVE ON RETIREMENT.

get well   June 3rd, 2008 10:52 am ET

Get well and come back to the senate senator.

Kiah   June 3rd, 2008 10:52 am ET

All I can see is Sen Byrd's tearful tribute to Sen. Ted Kennedy. And then that jerk Cheney goes and insults his citizens in WV.

I pray all is well with the Senator and he makes a speedy recovery!

Songbird McCain   June 3rd, 2008 10:51 am ET

Isnt it odd how so many of Obama's endorsers are suddenly stricken with illnesses? Could it be the mysterious Clinton Curse back in action? They seem to be dropping like flies, the way people have who've opposed the Clinton's over the years.

Eleanor   June 3rd, 2008 10:50 am ET

hope Senator bird feels better soon
God Bless you sir and speed your recovery

dwho   June 3rd, 2008 10:50 am ET

Get well soon, Senator Byrd, my favorite senator! Why are all my favorite senators in the hospital? Get well soon to you too Senator Kennedy. Great true political giants are a fading breed, it seems.

Cathy in MD   June 3rd, 2008 10:18 am ET

What an inspiration! Be well, Senator Byrd.

Johhnie Appleseed   June 3rd, 2008 10:17 am ET

I guess that's what happens when you mess with Cheney

Larz   June 3rd, 2008 10:14 am ET

too bad!we need him so much right now!!i hope his back in a few days!!!!!!!!!!!

proud army and navy mom   June 3rd, 2008 10:11 am ET

this probably happened because of Cheney's "joke". the senator was irate about it.

west virginia, aren't you proud?
some of you voted for hillary because of race.
you put bush in the whitehouse so he could get our troops killed, and raise the price of oil and food. now Cheney lets you see what they really think about you all. Are you having fun yet?

Jesse - San Antonio TX   June 3rd, 2008 10:09 am ET

How old and senile do you have to be to be told your not fit to be operating as a legislator?

akamoke   June 3rd, 2008 10:06 am ET

Get well soon

Sue   June 3rd, 2008 10:05 am ET

Sen Byrd has served our country well but is ailing and aged. He needs to retire. His intentions are good but he needs to step aside.

Jim   June 3rd, 2008 10:02 am ET

Our paryers are with you Senator Byrd!

WE NEED THE TRUTH   June 3rd, 2008 10:02 am ET

Get well Senator Byrd. I hope it's nothing serious and that you will have many more years left to contribute to this country and also so that you can hug the first black president. You are one of Senator Obama's supporters that should be around when he takes the office, because your heart is good and your soul belongs to God and you have resolved the issues of your youth.

God has forgiven you and blesses you.

The US abolishes century old clinton dynasty   June 3rd, 2008 10:01 am ET

may you be well.

Charlotte   June 3rd, 2008 10:00 am ET

Sen. Byrd needs to retire, now!

Veterans for Obama   June 3rd, 2008 9:59 am ET

Did Cheney anger him that much?

Mary in CT   June 3rd, 2008 9:58 am ET

….but a 72 year old President is too old!?!?!

He has caretakers   June 3rd, 2008 9:55 am ET

And yet democrats elect him to be the caretaker of America. Now that, is out of touch.

S.M   June 3rd, 2008 9:55 am ET

Why are people so surprised by what the Vice President of the United States says? He is just showing his true colors; and that is pure ignorance, stupidity and lack of respect for others. Surely, he can't talk about anyone when he was the one who got four deferments to keep from serving in the war. This is just a sign of someone who is a coward and would prefer to hide behind the skirts and pants of those who are putting their lives on the line for he and Bush's selfish deeds. Ignorant is as ignorant does!

Saad from NJ   June 3rd, 2008 9:55 am ET

Hats off to him for being a serving senator @ 90 but he should retire. For his own sake, if not for the country and the people who love him.

Venus   June 3rd, 2008 9:54 am ET

Get well soon! Our prayers are with you!

LT   June 3rd, 2008 9:51 am ET

We pray for you to get well quickly Sen. Byrd. We need you in Senat. We love you, Sir.

Foreign observer   June 3rd, 2008 9:35 am ET

Nobody gets fitter when getting older. Only Mc Cain believes different.

ClintonSpinsHerDonors   June 3rd, 2008 9:33 am ET

Get well we need all democratic leaders we can get. We need to defeate republicans (false Christians) we can not afford to have any republican serving our country.

NJ Republican   June 3rd, 2008 9:30 am ET

Nobody wants to go to the hospital, and for Mr. Byrd and his family I wish only a speedy recovery….

But come on, this guy is 20yrs older that McCain!!!!! And Barack Obama's campaign is questioning the age of McCain. Get real….Obama will take his support though….real change I guess Obama in the politics in Washington.

AlexNYC   June 3rd, 2008 9:28 am ET

IN 2002 Senator Robert Byrd was the most outspoken critic regarding the US going into a preemptive war with Iraq, and voted against the resolution. Even at age 90 the man still has important work to do, and I wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Josh   June 3rd, 2008 9:24 am ET

Although I do not agree with his endorsement of Sen. Obama, I hope and pray that Byrd and his family are doing well!

Terry from Illinois   June 3rd, 2008 9:19 am ET

Hang in there Sen. Byrd I'm thinking of you and sending lots of prayers your way. And thank you for giving of your self all these years!

Cynthia   June 3rd, 2008 9:18 am ET

Hope that he is okay.

Berat, Park Ridge, IL   June 3rd, 2008 9:17 am ET

I have to respect a guy who has turned it around the way Sen. Byrd did from his early career to now, but this is just another example that there's a changing of the guard going on. For better or for worse — hopefully, for better — the older generation is peeling back, making way for the new one.

joy   June 3rd, 2008 9:12 am ET

SIR I HOPE YOU GET WELL SOON

LET US ALL PRAY FOR HIM AND GOD BLESS THE WORLD
