Clinton is reportedly interested in being Obama’s running mate.
Clinton is reportedly interested in being Obama’s running mate.

(CNN) – Hillary Clinton herself directly raised the issue of serving as Barack Obama's running mate in a conference call with New York lawmakers earlier Tuesday, a source who was on the call tells CNN's Candy Crowley.

According to the source, Clinton told those on the call that if asked by Obama, she would be interested in serving as his running mate. That comment was not in response to a particular question.

The Clinton campaign maintains the New York senator merely said she would do whatever is in the party's best interest, and that her comments Tuesday are no different than what she has been saying for weeks.

The source also said all the lawmakers on the call thought that Clinton needed to be on the ticket.

Rep. Nydia Velazquez, one of the call's participants, told CNN that she expressed on the call that Clinton needed to be on the ticket in order for Latino voters to cast ballots for Barack Obama.

"I expressed to her how the Latino community felt so strongly about her leadership and how she became a champion for Latinos, in fact a Latino leader in the eyes of so many Latinos," Velazquez said.

"I said to her at that I felt and I hear from many Latinos that there is a problem regarding Obama connecting to them and talking to them and I mentioned that also the same is true with blue collar workers and the women sector and so I say if we really want to win we need to have a ticket that can bring people together that can unify the party," she also said.

The representatives on the call included Reps. Charlie Rangel, Joseph Crowley, Steve Israel, Nydia Velazquez, Nita Lowey, Gregory Meeks, Eliot Engel, Jose Serrano, and Brian Higgins.

OH, forgot to say that I can smell the fear of the republicans blogging away tonight. This is our night!! Democrats will win the Congress and White House in Nov!!!!!

Peter Damoah-Afari   June 3rd, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Hillary can be considered for another position, but not VP. It will be difficult for the pair to defend some of the damages caused by Hillary. So, the best thing to do is to keep her away from the ticket.

william   June 3rd, 2008 8:00 pm ET

It is time for Hillary to become the independant candidate for president

shirley   June 3rd, 2008 7:59 pm ET

Hillary will never win another election if she gives this one to McCain, her political career will be over. She has lost the nomination fairly, the only way she will save her career will be to concede and help us win in November. Then she may have a chance in 2016.

CYNTHIA in Redan, GA   June 3rd, 2008 7:59 pm ET

OMG! If she becomes the running mate I am afraid that Senator Obama is really in trouble because Hillary and Bill will be truly divisive and dangerous. I think that his safety is a concern for me with that ticket. He'd be better off getting someone that is a staple in the Democratic Party and that the majority of people like.

Connie Sturgeon   June 3rd, 2008 7:59 pm ET

I have been listening to all the pundits since this news came out. Obama does not owe Hillary Clinton anything. All through the campaigning she has put him down, even at times praising John McCain over him.I would rather see him lose than cave to her demands. He has pulled him self up by the boot straps, he needs to decide for himself and continue to hold his head up very high. I will vote for Obama whoever his VP is.

Old white, blue collar working women , Connie from Indiana

Todd   June 3rd, 2008 7:59 pm ET

ok people...really?
Obama is a big boy. and as president, you better believe that he could EASILY keep both Hillary and Bill in check.

Any Obama support who thinks that he cannot handle it is slighting their own candidate. Having Hillary would be a smart decision for the party; I don't care if you do not like her because she ran against him...that's how this whole thing works.

This goes for Clinton supporters as well, however. Stop whining and complaining that Hillary didn't get the nomination. We are not in fifth grade. This is not "I didn't get what I want so NO ONE gets what they want". This is simply incredibly immature and irresponsible. We are a PARTY, not a CANDIDATE. Please, get over yourselves. I, for one, was a Hillary supporter up until a month ago, but you do not see my going around whining and complaining.

I'm sorry, but it is time for some of you to grow up. We are all adults, and as a party, we have to be able to look past this. We NEED to be able to look past this. Please do not mess this up for our country.

Hannah   June 3rd, 2008 7:59 pm ET

Hillary should let Obama twist in the wind, let him lose, then she runs
in 1912, wins and is President. She has been discriminated against
through the whole campaign and Obama has been fawned over
by the media until even he thinks he'll be a good President!

BLACKMAILING FOR VP = THE LOW ROAD

Sandy   June 3rd, 2008 7:58 pm ET

Obama should not select Clinton as VP nominee. Obama can win without Clinton.

Many voters in California have remorse for voting for Clinton – would now have voted for Obama.

Many many voters were Republicans who voted for Clinton.

Too much baggage with the Clintons.

Kent in Dallas   June 3rd, 2008 7:58 pm ET

The process is always unfair when you lose. If the roles were reversed, Senator Clinton would be talking about how great the process is and her supporters would be agreeing with her.

Mrs. Green   June 3rd, 2008 7:58 pm ET

Senator Clinton is a strong person and not a child so she does not need to be "pacified" with a consolation gift of the vice presidency. Every four years all candidates fight a good fight. None of those fights have earned an automatic placement into the VP slot. There have been no package deals before. If Senator Clinton were in a position to win, go Democrats. If as it appears that she does not and Obama wins, go Democrats. We need a Democrat in the White house. Period.

Doug Pancoast   June 3rd, 2008 7:58 pm ET

The predominant reason (not the only reason) Hillary got so many votes over Obama is that she's white...not that she's a woman. Last I checked Hillary Clinton wasn't the only white person in the US that Obama could pick for VP. Obama will be just fine without Clinton. In fact, he'll be far better off without her.

Charles   June 3rd, 2008 7:58 pm ET

Look, at this point I don't care, I just don't want another BUSH whitehouse

Scott   June 3rd, 2008 7:58 pm ET

Right, responsible Americans we will not vote for Obama.

They will vote for the most qualified and moderate candidate on the ballot…

Like Bush for 8 years

Obama all the way.....

Emster   June 3rd, 2008 7:58 pm ET

Oh enough Hillary coverage already! Hillary this and Hillary that! What about Obama and his victory news? Let's focus on one thing at a time. And right now, the big news is Obama is about to become the Democratic nominee for president. Tonight, I only want to hear about Obama and his finally clinching the nomination. Yes!

LoisStrother   June 3rd, 2008 7:57 pm ET

PLEASE, PLEASE Obama, DO NOT choose Hillary for your V.P. running mate!!!!! The country has had enough of her! And of course, you would be getting "good ol Bill too! I support you, but would have to have second thoughts if you should ask her to be the V.P. canidate. I truly believe this would be a big mistake and would insure a Republican win in November!

Ladie Dove   June 3rd, 2008 7:57 pm ET

I'm a lifelong Democrat and I will not vote for Obama if he is the nominee - UNLESS Senator Clinton is on the ticket. If she's not, I can't bring myself to vote for McCain, but I will vote for her - even if I have to write-in her name on the ballot. I am encouraging others who feel like I do to do the same.

B-NYC – I beg to differ, once the Hillary supporters who are TRUE DEMOCRATS see the differences between McCain and Obama, they will choose Obama almost 95% of the time...

The other 5% are not voting on Policies, but only voting on Gender or color of skin.

Thats a fact.

LC7196   June 3rd, 2008 7:56 pm ET

HRC has too much baggage to be VP. I hope Obama finds a nice way to tell her to go back to NY.

AZ Voter   June 3rd, 2008 7:56 pm ET

I think Americans as a whole are stupid. We let the media sway us instead of understanding what's real. I believe that putting the snake Hillary as VP is a mistake. It'll definitely hurt Obama. Furthermore, this bullcrap about inexperience, WHAT??? Look at the C student we had in office for the last 8 years, if that's experience then no thank you.

OBAMA '08 all the way

boomer babe for Obama   June 3rd, 2008 7:56 pm ET

The vice-presidency is a heartbeat away from the presidency. Who in their right mind would want their heartbeat standing between Hillary Clinton and the White House?

Big D   June 3rd, 2008 7:55 pm ET

Can't we let Obama have at least one day to celebrate his hard-earned victory? Let him decide himself, at his own timeframe, who he wants as his running mate. There's no hurry, so stop rushing him and pushing Hillary. Let's celebrate Obama's victory tonight!

Eric   June 3rd, 2008 7:55 pm ET

For all of you saying vote Mccain, hope you can afford 3 trillion after 5-100 more years for the iraq war, not to mention $10 gas and food cost out of the roof. If so please vote McCain, but I am not rich and cannot afford to keep the same policies we have today. Before you know it I will be in foreclosure when i was living comfortable before republicans took office.

shirley   June 3rd, 2008 7:55 pm ET

It appears Hillary will hold the DNC hostage by not dropping out of a race that Senator Obama won fairly, she intends to try to blackmail the Party for the Vice Presidental job. Do not let her get away with this nasty last minute ditch for power.

Silence Dogood   June 3rd, 2008 7:55 pm ET

As several alert readers pointed out, the editors mis-spoke in the article: "Clinton ...raised the issue of serving as Clinton's running mate ".

For the male editors, this is just funny. No big deal.

But any editors that are women are, according to the Obama campaign policies, liars and monsters, and "too strong". Unless you like being called "sweetie", then it is OK.

Karl Ami   June 3rd, 2008 7:55 pm ET

JoAnn Pa.   June 3rd, 2008 7:55 pm ET

Those of you that are saying you will vote for McCain if Hillary isn't on the Presidental ballot, think about what you are doing to the Democratic party..do you REALLY want another four yrs. of the mess this country is in? You are not helping your children or grandchildren by keeping Republicans in the white house. Heaven help us.

Oh Good Grief   June 3rd, 2008 7:54 pm ET

Goodness! Did she offer him the VP position again??

Peter E   June 3rd, 2008 7:54 pm ET

And so the truth comes to light: Obama supporters would rather vote for McCain than have Hillary on the ticket. They don't care about their own candidate's message of 'positive change of hope and unity.' All they care about is to destroy a scapegoat because they can't face the fact that their own party sat around and did nothing for them for decades!
And yet they continue to label Hillary's supporters as 'traitors' when they'd rather vote for McCain... Hypocrites!

Scott   June 3rd, 2008 7:54 pm ET

I can see Hillary saying the reason why Sen. Obama won because I was his running mate. so let Obama make his own choice on who to trust as VP. She got too much baggage.

Obama....08

Yolanda   June 3rd, 2008 7:54 pm ET

Hillary Clinton does NOT need to be VP. She has created such a divide in the party. She should not have commented at all about being VP. How can Obama preach change if he has Hillary Clinton as his running mate?

oregonrose   June 3rd, 2008 7:54 pm ET

Bye-Bye Hillary LOVERS!!!!!

Ellie, Boyds MD   June 3rd, 2008 7:54 pm ET

NO, Sen. Obama should NOT pick Sen. Clinton as his VP. There is way tooo much baggage here.

Hillary: The Real Nominee   June 3rd, 2008 7:54 pm ET

Obama's negatives are on an exponential process to infinity by November. Hillary may be able to bring down his negatives and somehow win the presidency; however, Hillary would be best to decline and believe any V.P. acceptance will be political suicide for whoever accepts. With that said, Hillary is Obama's only chance.

ryand   June 3rd, 2008 7:54 pm ET

There are 72 million registered Democrats and growing.

If a portion of the 17 million that voted for Clinton decide to be sore losers and switch parties it won't impact the millions of other Americans with sense.

For every one of you angry individuals I'll be sure to sign up 100 new bonafide Obama supporters to vote.

Lets get this country back on track.

Jackson in CA   June 3rd, 2008 7:54 pm ET

John Smith   June 3rd, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Give it up, the BEST always wins; Obama has won. Therefore, he cannot but be the BEST.

Where did Hillary's experience get her in this process? She has loaned her campaign and is currently indebted.

If I were to do a psychological evaluation of these candidates, it will be simple:
Hillary: inadequate use of resources
Obama: effective use of limited resources.

Folks, this is what "opportunity" is all about in this nation; it is not about name recognition! So, give it up– this is Obama's and no one should take it away from him and his supporters!!!!

Johnny West Palm Beach   June 3rd, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Jenny   June 3rd, 2008 7:51 pm ET

Please go away, Hillary! Obama supporters do NOT want you as the VP. You are exactly what we are NOT looking for. You will probably hope for Obama's demise everyday if you become his VP. Don't allow Hillary in any position for power.

Greg Atlanta   June 3rd, 2008 7:51 pm ET

All this talk of party unity, Hillary can bring that unity and now the Obama kool aid drinkers are bitter. He needs her more than she needs him. Do we want more of the same Bush policies or a winning ticket. Like it or not Clinton and Obama are very close in votes. Please people think the year 2000. We do not live in a democracy, the US is a Republic and now it's all about the Electoral College. Obama needs Hillary to win in November.

Lettter to Barack Obama:

Dear Senator Obama,

Here is some unsolicited, unemotional, no-drama advice.

Offer to help Mrs. Clinton pay off her campaign debt AND let her know there is a cabinet position waiting for her if she wants it. Do this in exchange for her vigorous help and support with your Presidential campaign.

BUT do not offer her the Vice President nomination, please.

Reasons not to ask Hillary Clinton to be your VP:

1. It will energize and mobilize the Republicans against you and the Democrats.

2. She will not be able to subordinate her ideas and style to your ideas and style.

3. As a Clinton she will stand in complete contradiction to your over-arching theme of CHANGE.

4. Bill Clinton! Remember what happened when Ferraro's husband was not vetted completely and properly; his dirty laundry helped sink that Democratic ticket. Bill is a loose cannon. Bill Clinton's many volitale issues, which you were gracious enough not to bring up in the primaries, will provide a field day for the Republicans to hurt you.

From a loyal supporter who really does want to see you win the Presidency in the fall,

Tyler in Raleigh, NC   June 3rd, 2008 7:50 pm ET

Why doesnt she just threaten him for it?

I think the quote is correct though, Clinton would be perfectly fine serving Clinton as VP. Serving Obama as VP, she would just be waiting for Bosnian snipers to "things happen" him.

Great comments by Hillary supporters! If not Hillary then McCain!!

OBAMA – CLINTON 08

Kristen   June 3rd, 2008 7:49 pm ET

Obama should be smart about this. Don’t let Hillary bully him into making her VP. She is showing that the show must be all about her. People keep saying in her own time she will concede the race. Why must Clinton be babied? She has lost, accept it already and endorse Obama. No, that would be too much like right. This is just another political game she is playing; now if Obama doesn’t offer her the VP spot, he is supposed to look like the divisive one. Don’t fall for it Barack, be your own man. Take in this night because you truly have something to be proud of. As far as Clinton step aside and don’t let the door knob hit you where the good Lord split ya.

Doesn't she have to concede he has WON before talking about the VP slot?

Has she conceded his victory by even making the statementZ???

Why aren't any of the talking heads wondering about this and asking her camp to clarify??????????

I would hope that Obama would pick someone like Richardson from New Mexico who actually has the experience he is lacking. In talking to many of my friends I think it would not be in his best interest or the best interest of the ticket to choose Hillary. I would offer her something, but not vice president.

No Hillary   June 3rd, 2008 7:48 pm ET

Sorry Hillary, we don't trust you enough to have you as our VP. Perhaps you have more in common with McCain.... U admire him as a more experienced leader anyhow. Plus he is looking for a VP.

Fred Bryant   June 3rd, 2008 7:48 pm ET

In your story about Clinton raising the issue of running for Vice President, your editing department made an error by not catching the mistake that she is running for Vice President and being the Presidential nominee at the same time. It said Clinton raised the issue about Clinton. I just thought I would point that out to you. I love the news your all put out and I enjoy the stories you all decide to air that other news stations either don't care about or just are interested in ratings and not man kind.

Fred from MD

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah   June 3rd, 2008 7:46 pm ET

HRC should gracefully go back to senate -instead of trying to make history-

Bridgette - PA   June 3rd, 2008 7:41 pm ET

I don't care what they think. We need to give OBAMA some time to think about this. Stop pressuring him! There are other potential female V.P. candidates out there, not just Hillary. Get over it!

OBAMA / SEBELIUS-08!

pink - SC   June 3rd, 2008 7:41 pm ET

I really do not think he should even CONSIDER Hillary as his running mate. She will be very useful in the cabinet somewhere, but not as VP..... not after she talked all that junk.

Brian Knoxville, TN   June 3rd, 2008 7:41 pm ET

We donated easily over 15 times more money to Hillary Clinton than our family could afford, and we will not vote for an unknown, inexperienced and unqualified candidate for president of the United States, even if a great candidate like Hillary is running as his VP.

Sorry, but as responsible Americans we will not vote for Obama.

We will vote for the most qualified and moderate candidate on the ballot...

McCAIN DEMOCRATS '08

whatever gets the democrats in!!!

Monte   June 3rd, 2008 7:40 pm ET

CNN, give up. We all know you are in Obama' s camp. You can stop pretending to be otherwise.
Please leave Hillary alone. You and your Obama supporters are just making us hate you even more than we do now.
John McCain will be getting my Hillary vote.

MD   June 3rd, 2008 7:40 pm ET

By accepting second place when she won the popular vote, she will set back the womens' rights movement 10 years.

Hillary, wait until 2012 and then run again. Obama either won't win this year or will surely implode during his first term. Another Jimmy Carter.

Ratgurl   June 3rd, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Obama should make his own choice on who to trust as VP. Stop shoving Clinton down his throat!!!

Politico   June 3rd, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Just a typo:

"Hillary Clinton herself directly raised the issue of serving as Clinton's running mate..."

Should read Obama's running mate (though I'm sure she'd be overjoyed to be both pres and veep!) :)

Tracy   June 3rd, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Let the Hispanics keep their vote. It's for rum and beer anyway.

John Smith   June 3rd, 2008 7:39 pm ET

Idiots!

Hillary should NOT even be a member of the Dem party, after this process.

Hillary does NOT have the experience needed. She has been running under Bill's past fortunes. But Bill has screwed all this stuff; so Hillary's service is useless!

martin   June 3rd, 2008 7:39 pm ET

its not up to her.this would be obama's only mistake ,so far.

Gary   June 3rd, 2008 7:39 pm ET

She should NOT serve as VP. Obama will lose in November. She can run against McCain in 2012 – and win then.

Nany   June 3rd, 2008 7:39 pm ET

With Michelle Obama sitting with Farrakhan and slamming whitey.

. Here’s my question for all of the Obamabots, Barry was raised by WHITE WOMEN yet he sat and listened to 20 years of “whitey bashing” and never once said this isn’t the truth about my Mother and Grandmother why? His Grandmother paid his way to private schools and Harvard. What do his daughters think of their Grandmother and Great Grandmother? Do they hate them as see them and great oppressors as Rev. Wright does?

Hillary or Macain   June 3rd, 2008 7:39 pm ET

BYE BYE DEMOCRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
