From

(CNN) - One night after Barack Obama officially clinched the Democratic presidential nomination, the Illinois senator had a short conversation with his rival for the presidency, John McCain.

According to Obama Senior Adviser Linda Douglass, the conversation was cordial, and both said they looked forward to a 'civil discussion.'

Peter E, the hate mongering has not come out of the Obama camp. Check your facts!!!

Ken   June 5th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Obama talking to McCain is like a college professor trying to talk to a grenade.

It is QUITE simple: the [R]s have had all THREE branches of government for 6 years, and in just about every respect the country has gone into the toilet as a DIRECT result of their policies and actions.

During that time, McCain voted with the [R]s ~90% of the time to perpetrate this experiment of taking America back to the Dark Ages. Since then, McCain has denounced or flip-flopped on the other 10% of his votes in order to bury his nose into the butts of the far right.

Anybody who has paid attention for these last 8 years, who is not brain dead or retarded, would have to be MONUMENTALLY stupid to vote for McCain and a continuation of the [R] trainwreck.

If Obama talks about two issues at the same time McBush will get so confused he won't remember anything and if McBush yells loud enough Obama won't be able to continue because he'll be the guy who was given a wedgie in front of the girls!

Too funny!

"Booo hoooo,
Hillary didn't win the democratic nomination like I wanted. So I'm voting for McCain"............Give me a break.

Chi4Obama   June 5th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Why will some democrats switch parties and vote Republican because Hillary was "Treated badly", or a victim of "Sexism".
As if Barack had anything to do with that…

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it Bill Clinton that said "Politics is a contact sport…" And "if you can't stand the heat.." Oh, I guess that only applied to Barack.

Please, let us put this foolishness behind us and unite as a party.

John McShame has nothing to offer this country.

douadavid, PA   June 5th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Hello my fellow democrat for Hillary !
She will officially end her qest for president on Saturday in Washington ,DC. Now , it is the time to choose the two major candidates to be our next Commander in Chief. I hope you know that John Mcain is the second best choice after Hillary. It is time for all American to pay back his family service that gave us freedom in this country. John Mcain served in Vietnam War as a fighter pilot and became a prisoner for 5 years in Hanoi Guine pig jail after his jet was shot down. He came back to us as our war hero and now is the time for us to say to him , thank you so much for our freedom and you deserve our vote. I am a new John Mcain 's democrat party. Obama deserves to be only the president of his racist church and go back to be with his crook friend in Chicago.

kim portland, oregon   June 5th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

i have a few little words for mccain's 20-million-dollar May: BAND-AID!!

this is like putting a BAND-AID on the leg of a soldier whose leg was just blown off by an IED in YOUR war, mcsame!

Fawell T.   June 5th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Talking about Obama does not have enough experience, I gues that is the reason our economy is so perfect now because George W. Bush had somuch experience when is was running for President.

Ratgurl   June 5th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Hey John,

SHOW US YOUR DONOR LIST!

Fawell T.   June 5th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

I believe the reasons Hillary had somuch vote was because Republican was crossing over to vote for her. They know McCain would be able to beat her. Anyhow, for all the people out there who are saying they are going to vote for Mccain because H. Clinton didn't get the nomination is the stupidest thing I ever heard. Those mindless people was already Republican give me a break because it will not work.

Prab   June 5th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

I have a reminder to the so called Clinton supporter from Florida. By voting Republicans you are going to bring another Bush term via Mccain and in turn responsible for killing thousands of inncocent young Americans. Shake up your Brain as you may have to answer your kids and others for this foolish attitude. Also dont forget that Clinton wasall along selfish using the letter IIIII al along. Dont get fooled

I think you 'r just upset your canditdate didn't win, beleave me if he were the anitchrist you would not know it. So don't hate your fellow man, because we are all sinner, and when you call someone the anitchrist , you dam well better know you facts, I'll pray for and hope the antichrist don't come for you frist, scince you seem to know him so well.

Obama – don't do anything to help McCain. He is just looking for some free air time. They will be a time and place for McCain to debate Obama and on mutual terms...not on McCain's terms.

JMN   June 5th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

"Both said they looked forward to a 'civil discussion.'" I really hope this is true. I honestly believe that this likelihood is what helped both McCain and Obama rise to the top–an "audacious" hope that an election could "go positive" rather than wallow in negativity. (THAT more than anything else is what "change" refers to.) And I hereby apologize to all Clinton supporters who felt "hatred and personal attacks" from Obama supporters. I hope we can cool down and realize that we are all–Obama, Clinton, McCain, and their supporters–on the same side: i.e., we love our country and want what's best for it. All this nasty blogging needs to stop; American politics is not the Jerry Springer show, and such venom is extremely unhealthy for our future as a democracy.

Beltway Insider   June 5th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Donna   June 5th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

If you vote on the issues:

Obama has the exact same economic policy of president Carter there is virtually no differance. (do you remember 18 % morgage rates?)

If the economy is your issue Obama is not your man , I know that only leaves McCain , but Mc cain's economic poilcies are very different from Bush's.

Maybe come 2010 we'll be missing Hillary more than we think!

I think Obama can really unite the country and move the country forward. His healthcare plan is really impressive.

Diver36   June 5th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

At a time like this it would appear that we (the country) needs a mature , level headed, seasoned ,gutsy leader and not some liberal kid who appears to be still in college with ideals that may sound great but are un real and could mean the end of our country as we know it.
How long has Obama been in Washington? Has he even found the mens room yet ?
Our economy is down but not out, Some of his ideas may help some people now but what about tomorrow? The usual democrat line is like Robbin Hood , steal from the rich and give to the poor. Instead , help create and maintain an enviroment where there are jobs for all that want one . To let those who want to destroy us know that we can't be pushed around and that we will crush all that try.
Mc Cain is the person who can and will lead us through these very difficult times and not sell us out because of liberal idealisem .
Catrer was a liberal idealest and we had Americans held by Iran while our military couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag . Do we want this to happen again?
In 10 years or so Obama may have enough smarts to be president but not now.

al   June 5th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

I think it's going to be tough arguing with McCain. It's like having a discussion or arguing with my grampa 'coz they are already set on their ways. No more changing, it's my way or the highway. I don't have to listen to you son attitude. It is frustrating for Barak but I think he is going to show his playful charm to atleast respect the old man.

BARACK THE VOTE!!!!!!!!

MAKE YOUR DECISION BASED ON SUBSTANCE   June 5th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

The absolutely most idiotic thing I keep hearing is that Hillary supporters and people that supposedly call themselves "former democrats" are switching sides to vote for McCain in November because of the MEDIA!!!

Are you people serious?!?!?! You aren't picking a candidate based on merits....you are picking them because you feel the media (who are protected to share whatever view they believe in under the constitution) has been unfairly bias towards Obama.

Do you care about the future of our country? If you want to make a point that is worthy of the argument then protests the media...or turn off your TV or radio....but try staying true to your own morals, ethics, and opinions and vote based on the candidates....please...thank you....good bye!

Really   June 5th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

This is the best the dems have to offer. With how bad the economy is and world affairs, this should have been a slam dunk for them. The dems are out of touch. Obama wants to divide our country. Look at his writings and the people that he considers friends and mentors. If it were the reverse. Turn it around. If he were white and going to meetings that attacked blacks, the person would be run out of town. Instead it is alright for blacks to attack whites. He does not have the character or experience to run even a medium size company let alone the United States.

William Courtland   June 5th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Hey Senator's!:

Under the Constitution: the navy is required to protect and maintain the trade of the Union while in international waters and along its own coast, as the Postal routes are also under the duristiction of the Constitution, and as a great deal of telecommunications equipment is maintained in orbit, the navy, or mashalls office must also reach orbit in a method of protection.

A solution to this would be to maintain a fleet of mini-three man ships which can sail the ocean while nearly reaching orbit.

In space a station is required to maintain order, while a side organization supplies that station from the moon, while other corporations operate shuttle and repair services to satellites and allowing Naval facility on the moon to operate the mini-three man ships to reach orbit with levelled operations which reach orbit and the moon.

This allowing space a clean and free range for shipping routes, transportation, and tourism.

Speaking numbers Obama simply cannot win. 1. 1/2 of the voters that will not for him that would have voted for Hillary are not going to vote Obama even if Hillary is on the ticket, they simply dislike Obama that much. 2)There are more older white people in this country than younger college people and older (retired, etc) are more reliable voters. 3) Even if Obama gets 100% of the black vote , which he will not, it is still not enough.

Thje Wright thing is going to haunt him and cost him the White House. And apparently there is a video tape out there with Michelle O. giving a speech a Trinity that is not complimentary. Moderates have a greater chance than liberals to win the Presidency. Obama in no way shape or from is a moderate. And for all of ou who think ANY President will be able to just pull out of Iraq, you are very naive.

The last thing – in head to head town hall debates McCain has a great advantage. Obama speaks well with a prepared speech but other wise he stumbles. This is not to mention that according to The Wall Street Journal article which is very accurate. Obama has to raise taxes on the middle calss by about 15-20% to cover all of his social spending. This is on top of the enormous amount he will raise taxes on the upper income people.

This is not about Obama and the color of his skin. I wish he was a moderate or slightly left, I would vote for him. But, he is extremely liberal and his ties to radical black theology are going to bury him regardless of what MSNBC says to the contrary.

I think America is ready for a multicultural President, just not Obama.

Michelle   June 5th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Both candidates need to talk to the American people.

I would like to see discussion of issues in a townhall-style meeting, as McCain suggested.

IMO Obama wants to skate on prepared speeches and
canned answers.

He wants to keep real questions of American citizens at bay so that no one really gets to know the real Obama. He seems to want to stay in a protective bubble.

Obama wants to glide on charisma. Sorry, this isn't American Idol; it is the presidency and Obama needs to offer specific plans and answers.

Xavier, St. Louis, MO   June 5th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

What’s amazing to me is that Hillary’s disciples, are so upset with her losing that they are willing to vote for McCain. Like Obama did something illegal to win or didn’t play by the rules. Obama has done everything by the books. He followed the rules and he won fair and square. Hillary’s disciples need to think long and hard about what they are saying. Voting for McCain would be like cutting off your head to stop a headache.

Jane, College Park, MD   June 5th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

McCain needs Obama to get people to listen to him.

His campaign is broke. Exactly what would happen to the U.S.A. if he ever became President.

As far as I am concerned, I am voting for President based on how they
have run their campaigns ( Cost effectiveness, Lobbyists, drama, etc)- PERIOD. Guess who gets my vote?

Ivan, Chicago, Illinois   June 5th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

I can't believe McCain is even in double digits. Look at what the Repugs have done to this country the past 8 years! And this dinosaur with a dinosaur-mentality wants to continue.

And 45% of the American people want him? I guess the Europeans are RIGHT about a great deal of Americans ... they really ARE that stupid!

RJ, CA   June 5th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

If John McCain appears a bit “stiff” to you, rather than “bouncy” like Senator Obama, here’s why:

• In 1967 McCain escaped from his burning jet during the USS Forrestal fire. While helping another pilot escape, exploded bomb fragments struck him in the legs and chest.
• Later that year, his Skyhawk was shot down over Hanoi.
• McCain fractured both arms and a leg, and then nearly drowned, when he parachuted into a lake.
• After he regained consciousness, a crowd attacked him, crushed his shoulder with a rifle butt, and bayoneted him.
• He was transported to Hoa Lo Prison, the "Hanoi Hilton."
• Now having lost 50 pounds, in a chest cast, and with his hair turned white, a program of severe torture began on McCain.
• He was subjected to 2-3 beatings per week, as well as rope bindings.
• His injuries left him permanently incapable of raising his arms above his head.
• McCain was put into solitary confinement for 2 years.
• Altogether, John McCain was held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for 5-1/2 years.

As a republican, while I was admiring the accomplishment of both candidates, Clinton and Obama, I was troubled by the uncivil, hateful and unnecessary attacks by supporters of both camps against each other, especially from the Obama supporters. These personal attacks do no good to your candidate, nor your party, nor your country.
I worried how this kind of attacks will escalate when the focus is not on senator Clinton anymore. Well it has begun.
Unless your number is (or you are) insignificant as Obama supporters, how can he go forward in uniting the country as he campaigns for when you are so hateful?
I commend his ability to have garnered the support he has so far, his ability to inspire and motivate, his ideals, even though I will not vote for him for personal principle reasons.

Barb   June 5th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

Hopefully some of these writers will put aside the slams on both candidates (in other words, grow up!) and listen carefully when they begin their townhall meetings. Listen carefully, try to put aside your political party bias and pay attention to what really matters. What these candidates each pledges to do to begin healing America. And, even before that, try to realize that Obama is very much a patriot, and great man, though I believe a bit inexperienced. McCain, on the other hand, is NOT "McBush"....if you listen carefully, he is proposing ANYTHING BUT four more years of Bush. Unfortunately, Obama used that strategy every time he had the chance. We need to be real careful, our country needs to do some serious healing, so let's drop the insults on both candidates and listen to what each has to say...rather than nixing either one before they have a chance.

Judy - Wyoming   June 5th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

After reading through all the above notes, I don't see how either candidate can move this country in a new direction. I am an independent voter who is as yet undecided but am totally turned off by the Obama supporters vitriol about McCain. Every time one of you mouths off like you have above, you look like Kool-Aid drinking fools. Let's face the facts, both candidates have problems. Neither of them are perfect and neither of them will be able to do what they want to accomplish unless they can bridge the partisan gap in the Congress. McCain has angered the GOP many times in the past by crossing party lines and Mr. Obama, in his short time in the US Senate and his times in the Illinois legislature has never crossed party lines. Time will tell but it sure would be nice if the respective supporters could act civil too.

cbk16   June 5th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Both will be civil, it seem like it is in both of their natures to be kind. It is the other groups like Moveon.org and the swiftboat orgainzations that will do the dirty work. Even if the candates are so pure they do not want negative adds, this campain will have the most negative adds in history due to third parties. The stuff that can be said about Obama with Wright and Obama's not soluting the flag, his wife not proud of her country comments will get the most negative play.

It is my hope that both Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain will be able to debate "one on one" without having to be referee but any mamber of the media, specially CNN,NBC, MSNBC and be subjected to the same stupid, moronic, imbecilic, inconsequencial, infantile, unrealistic usual questions about social issues ie: abortion, gay issues, religion, race, affirmative action, candidates and spouses personal life issues, and let both gentlemen debate best ways to improve life in America for those whop suffer disatvantages, how to maintain the best life style and economy in the universe for those who have succeded and those with the potential to suceed, how to end the war in victory, stop accusing each other, promise only what they can deliver, stop the lies about universal health insurance and the unrealistic promises of riches, specially for those that refuse to do for themselves ans spect that the goverment will provide for them.
(that's is socialisim /communisim ), engage in actions that will help the environment and tell those radical environmentalist to take a hike.

Eric   June 5th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Obama does not have enough experience to lead the country at this point. If you don't believe me, do some research. He's a well spoken, intelligent and educated candidate but that's all. If he's elected, then we're in no better place than we were. I'm a minority but I don't think Obama is good enough to lead based on his experience in the U.S. Senate and his prior experience in the State Government. He has only served 4 years in the U.S. Senate from 2004-2008. As much as I disagree with McCain on some key issues but he's the lesser of the two evils. He has the experience.

I encourage everyone to do your research before making any of your decisions. Being informed is crucial. Do not base all your decision from Radio or News. They are often bias. You should get the fact.

Peter E   June 5th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

After all the hatred and personal attacks Obama supporters spouted against Hillary, alienating her supporters, I strongly doubt he'd have any chance of regaining several of the key states. With all the insults hurled against Florida from Obama supporters it is certain McCain will take that state. The same goes for Ohio. Perhaps even Michigan and Pennsylvania too. Obama will start with a huge deficit, thanks to his hate-mongering supporters, that he'll be hardpressed to make up for. And don't even hope for gaining any of the past red states. Obama is known to be the most liberal senator. Remember what that label did to Kerry and Edwards in 2004?

Sharon Minnesota   June 5th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Their civility won't last long. The Obama Network (CNN) will see to that.

If you think the Democratic party was split between two candidates, be prepared for our country splitting and fracturing between several factions in the coming months. It's going to get real ugly very soon.

My hope is that everyone gets all their venom out and over with by January of next year when President John McCain takes over the white house so we can be united Americans once more. Obama people, your time is coming to step back and watch someone else celebrate.

I got into a fistfight with a black man once. It was like punching a rubber tree. That guy was a hard one to knock down. The more I punched him the more he kept coming back. Because of this McCain doesn’t stand a chance. Obama is going to beat the snot out of him. I got into a fight with an old guy once too. I farted and he fell over. This represents how easy the fight will be for Obama. McCain is done!! Stick a fork in him.

Peter E   June 5th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

It is amusing that Obama supporters still spend so much of their energy spouting negative, personal attacks against Hillary, even on a topic like this. Give it a rest already! Alienating Hillary and her supporters isn't going to gain Obama any more votes! And like it or not, they are democrats too! But then again, even if your cat coughed up a hairball you'd blame it somehow on Hillary. Oh well, I don't mind really, if you want to make it so easy for McCain to take the presidency. I thought it would be more interesting of a race than that. But if the democrats want to destroy their own party...

Bitter - New Orleans, LA   June 5th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

People need to realise that just because a candidate votes against a bill doesn't mean that he is agains the concept. Chances are, the bill was crap and would not accomplish it's goal (like most).

Perfect example is the GI bill that McCain disagreed with. It would provide extra schooling money tall ALL GI's, regardless of time served. This would lessen essnetive to become noncommissioned officers.
Since McCain wasn't against the concept, he proposed his own version that gave more schooling money to those that had longer service. You won't hear this from barack and the dems who want to falsely paint him as being non supportive of veterans.

More work = more reward. I know a lot of libs don't agree with that, but it's sound policy.

canadian   June 5th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

This is so strange to watch...I have been following these elections closely. Both candidates are equally qualified and did a great job in their campaigns..Obama got more delegates and those are the rules.
Its incredible that American Democrats will threaten to vote for Republican if they do not get hillary on the ticket. I guess the country is in such great shape that it might as well be forfeited to McCain. This is really "baby" season...why don't people look at what the party stands for. Hillary will be ok..will America???

John 100years McCain is joined at the hip with Bush, and he is also the 3rd coming of the Bush administration. Obama will make his case to the people and I suspect given that Bush's approval ratings are the worst in the history of America, it wont be to hard to connect the dots.

In Texas,If Republicans make up 9 percent of the Democratic electorate, the average suggested among major polls this week, Obama's advantage of 2-to-1 to 3-to-1 could translate into a 3½- to 5½-point pad ..

Texas Republicans had a unique opportunity on March 4 to help deliver the final death blow to the Clinton campaign. Given the animosity that many Republicans have for Hillary it's no surprise that many of them cross party lines and vote for Obama. But Sen Clinton still give obama a sound whipping. obama will loose big in Nov.

OBAMA and McSAME on the same stage the RNC is pretty desperate these days. John Mccain cant draw a crowd, he cant raise his arms up over his head, and he cant read, His recent speech in LA was the worst speech or attempt a speech I had ever witnessed. So keep your town hall meetings and draw your 200 non- objective spectators OBAMA will keep filling arenas and stadiums and any other venue he chooses, O and who want to fly on the same plane as you MCSame you know OBAMA cant sit in the Seniors section.

Bitter - New Orleans, LA   June 5th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

To John from CA. If you reduce taxes, people will spend that money on good and services. Taxes are generated from those sales.

Better to have a good economy and good tax revenues than a crappy economy with only slightly better tax revenue.

You will never pull out of any economic downturn by raising taxes.

To answer your question about paying the bills...you quit wasting money with wasteful, inefficient govt spending.

Brian Knoxville, TN   June 5th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

John from CA,

Not for nothing, but sometimes reducing taxes stimulates the exchange of goods and services, all of which is taxed. In other words, sometimes reducing taxes can actually INCREASE tax revenues.

Of course, if we could tax flowery speechs and empty rhetoric, the government would just be rakin' it in from Obama's campaign every time he speaks.

Hillary Clinton has no need to hang her head or capitulate to anyone. A pathetic media fires up Obama supporters unnecessarily by their constant negative critiquing of Clinton. It's to their advantage to keep the fires of dissent burning. So many simple minded people fall for the emotional fever pitch rhetoric, they are so predictable. Again, we ask where are the educated people in the Obama camp?? My advice to Hillary Clinton would be to run as far away from the Democratic Party as possible and take her family with her. She and her family have already been hacked up and picked over by the Obama campaign, the DNC and the media vultures during this entire primary race, not to mention her supporters and campaign workers. I am praying daily that the Clinton supporters, independents and all good Republicans will see through the Obama smoke screen and get on board with the only candidate left who can lead the USA to safety, President, John McCain 2008.

Obama must show respect to Hillary Clinton and the 18 million, including myself, who voted for her. I am waiting as I'm sure others are to see what Senator Obama does in the following days. My decision for the November election will be determined by his actions towards Hillary Clinton.

Doubting Democrat   June 5th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

I am a registred Democrat, and I honestly do not believe that Obama will win the election in November. After all of the debates and all of the political ads, I believe the most Americans ultimately will vote for McCain. People will call into question Obama's ability to be a commander-in-chief, they will say that he has insufficient experience, and however unfortunate, they will look at his race and ethnicity. Hey, I could be very wrong, but I see a very large McCain victory on Election Day.

Manny   June 5th, 2008 12:27 pm ET

If this isn't about race, why did I read several articles in Philadelphia area newspapers today which totally focused on the race issue? There was even on on the SPORTS page in the Inquirer.
In addition, all you alarmists need to know that several news sources today used the "A" word to describe Caroling Kennedy as JFK"S daughter and there was even a more blatant reference to the demise of RFK as it is the anniversary of his "A". I certainly hope no one gets any insidious ideas after reading these inflammatory stories.

Raymond Duke   June 5th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

John McCain may start out civil but as soon as Obama tries the no substance crap and the dirty politics that he did against Hillary Clinton the gloves will come off. Hillary lost because of some stupid advisors and because she refused to fight dirty like Obama and the democrat leadership committee. Contrary to what the media portrays Bill Clinton as losing his touch and making so called racist statements about Jesse Jackson and south carolina was nothing but a B.S. farce that the media and the Obama campagin used as reverse racism baiting to take out Bill Clinton's Impact on the race. Hillary should have listen to Bill . He seen this ploy and said he would have got down in the dirt with them. If she had listen to him instead of some of them bleeding liberals she would be the nominee now. The republicans will play ball like Bill would have done. They want allow themselves to be called a racist and not answer back. Obama got a free ride on that from the democrat party and the media even though he ,his wife and advisors and reverends and church members were the ones making all the racist remarks and hate speeches about america. Look for the Michele Obama video and a lot more to come out in the october surprise. The republicans will use it and not let the media hide it or spin it for their annointed one. The republican party is not scared of the press.

Dear Dccret,

I too am voting on the issues. And here are the correct answers:

1. Economy McCain
2. Education McCain
3. Energy & Oil McCain
4. Foreign Policy McCain
5. Woman and Civil Rights Obama
6. Homeland Security McCain
7. Universal Healthcare McCain
8. Iraq War McCain
9. Iran McCain

My reason is because Obama has not yet proven himself whereas McCain has. Doesn't it just make sense that it depends on where you stand at on the issues? Who says YOU and Obama are right on these issues. I happen to think you are totally wrong. so based on My beliefs, and being a corporate manager in a Fortune 500 company, I'd say McCain is far and away the best candidate to be President. By the way, what credentials do YOU have?

Also notice I left off immigration because they are both wrong on this issue IMO. Illegal means it's against the law and until Congress votes or the Supreme Court rules that people can come in this country any time they want, then nothing short of completely sealing off the borders and deporting all illegals is correct.

Thank god Hillary won't be getting into the White House, not as president anyway!!! But I am also terrified at the thought of Obama getting into the white house. Obama is a great speaker, a little too great for my comfort. He's very Jimmy Carter-esque, and he has a way of making people feel all warm and fuzzy.

Obama says "Yes We Can", but he should be addressing "How We Can". I think Obama's political inexperience is going to be his downfall. And I think if he gets in office we're all in for a very unpleasant surprise.

It is expected that some women are going to feel that Hillary was a victim of sexism. But, I know from facts that every single person I talked to about our candidates had nothing to do with the fact that she was a woman. The fact of the matter was is that she ran a manufactured and processed campaign people are sick of seeing. Americans want truth and someone who they can actually empathize with. Change should be on everyone's forefront in this country. The people have to get us out of this war, economic crisis, diplomatic failures, and the person to lead us in that direction is neither Hillary or John. They are the product of the problem that brought us here to begin with. They are scared to change what should be changed and people need to be aware that things cannot continue to go this way in our country or we will eventually meet our doom.

BILL   June 5th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

It doesn't make a difference McCain or Obama. Our government whether run by democrats or republicans isn't capable of solving problems because they are too busy trying to get re-elected. For 35 years they didn't do anything about gas standards, environment, social security, health care and they won't do anything now because they have a vested interest in not solving problems. Leadership in government? Efficiency in government?

Obama supporters don't be put off by the so-called Clinton supporters saying they will vote McBush, not vote at all or will do a write in for Hillary. The overwhelming majority of them are the stealth Republicans that Bush Limpbaugh and Karl Rove have writing in to sway folks. It's the same tactics of Bush Limpbaugh and klarl Rove getting the radical right hate mongers to vote for Hillary so she would be the candidate that they really wanted McBush to face in November. They knew Hillary would unify and ignite their GOP supporters who hated her. Also, any Hillary supporters who want to fall for that crap and vote for the same GOP hate mongers and war mongers and who truly hated Hillary, well too bad. You won't change them as they have lost all reeason and I say good riddance. We need positive supporters willing to work for Obama and beat McBush. We definitely don't need irrational, whinny sexists or racists. nmaybe the GOP is where they truly belong.

Joiner in Texas   June 5th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Does anyone who writes on this, really read what they wrote. Some of these are just plain ignorant comments.

When the elections come, everyone can vote for who they believe will be the better president to fix this country. If some idiot votes for someone just because he / she is mad because the woman or man (lets not play the race / gender card) did not win, then that is stupid. Everyone should vote for the person they want to be president *even if you have to write in the name. If you want to vote for the person that you don't believe in, just to make a point you have the right, but isn't that the what terrorists think. I am sure that these extremest believe they have the right to do the unthinkable. Voting for someone to punish others is just about the same on a smaller scale.

If I must choose between doing what is right or wrong, I choose the right.

McCain: You newbies always trip on stuff like that. I'm gonna gettum until S.S. funds run out. Let's get to some of those townhouses. I mean town halls.

Obama: Any place. Any Time.

McCain: Meet me in Alabama Boy...

Obama: Wait a minute. You know I don't know my way down there.

McCain: Good. I will send you directions. From Chicago, take I-55 to Memphis. In Memphis, take 78 to Birmingham. I can have my judges to meet you there. You know the judges in Alabama wear white robes vs. black robes.

Obama: Sounds kinda fishy. Never saw a judge in a white robe. Can't we just meet in Mississippi?

McCain: They wear white robes there too. It will be OK. We will have a Hawaiian Lou Isle/Holy Celebration. You'll love it. You might even get a little burn on ya.

Obama: You sure it's OK? Never heard of a Hawaiian Lou Isle in Mississippi. How about Arkansas?

McCain: Well the judges just changed robe colors there too. That's the new headquarters. But come on boy. They don't hang folk anymore if that is what you're thinking. Heck you almost one of us. They would just probably beat one side of your body. Which side of ya is black and which is white?

I am pleased to see Barack Obama succeed in gaining the nomination and making history. It is starting to matter less about race or religion or background finally. However, as a moderate conservative, I would like to hear more about his economic and foreign policy ideas. I am not anxious to pay more capital gains taxes or payroll taxes, but if we can spend less on Iraq and start to get some universal safety net health insurance and stay out of inflation, it might be worth it. Thus far he seems too far to the left for me, but time will tell between him and McCain (who I believe is just to the right of the aisle and less "right-wing" than most give him credit for.) Let the "civil discussion" begin!

You will be fighting on two fronts, and like two dictators in the not so recent past, you will lose in the Fall. Those Russian winters. You lost the election folks and from what I am reading all over the internet, Dems are flocking to the "Sky Pilot" in droves now since you threw insults at a fine lady too! Remember, you lose, so why bother to waste energy which your candidate wishes to conserve, so he states. You lose. Your Party is lost. The Reps are getting tens of thousands of crossovers. Yes, these were once loyal Democrats. You lose. You are losing right now, at this very moment tens of thousands are leaving your flock. You lost. Throw in the towel and save the fuel for the winter. Your lose, got that. You lose.

I'm going to love it when the liberals fall flat on their faces, but its going to suck at the same time because the liberals are going to crap on our country and our people. They are more concerned with polar bears and other countries opinions of us that they will magnify the current problems of today.

Since when do people believe that liberals are going to solve our economic problems? Redistribution of wealth is not a problem solver, its a war starter. I'm prepared to do what it takes to keep this country from becoming a socialist, communist, politically correct state. I've had enough.

Someone should give McCain a red bull. He really needs an extra something. Obama is going to run circles around McCain this election season. McCain had it easy during his primary but the general election will not be a walk in the park.

By the way Hillary was not forced out by sexism. Hillary lost because she underestimated Obama from the beginning, lets hope McCain makes the same mistake.

YES WE CAN! YES WE WILL   June 5th, 2008 11:20 am ET

Did anyone notice the difference between McCain a babbling idiot and Obama the other night? I can't wait to see the two of them together debating Obama is NOT going to play around with McCain the way he did with Hillary who he really could not go toe to toe with without coming out looking bad for doing so, but McCain had better man up and had better learn to walk and talk at the same time and he need not come with those same old Republican wise cracks to hide behind. Come man to man McCain.

Women supporters were the main ones saying Obama was weak when it came to debating and dealing with Hillary, well she got away with a lot because Obama a strong intelligent black man could not freely handle her without people seeing him as threating to a short white woman so Hillary got away with much making her seem like she was handling Obama and in some ways she did, but only because he had to allow her more room. People we still live in a time where a woman, especially a white woman has to be handle with cloth gloves.

The Rev. Graham Matthews   June 5th, 2008 11:19 am ET

The Anti-Christ, you have got be joking, come on folks there are to many very important issues facing this country to be coming up with mess like that. Is it possible to get serious about this campaign, is it possible to stop the mess about the primaries and start focusing on the issues that affect this country? Which is more important to you, your hurt feelings or the serious issues that affect this country? Calling Obama by another name or saying his is the Anti-Christ or a Muslim or the various things I have seen is ridiculous and does nothing but prove some people’s motivations and ignorance. Get mad at me if you wish but the truth hurts, this name calling is childish and stupid, people are not taking the issues seriously and people wonder why nothing ever changes.

Everything ugly we say (myself included) is translated by them as something Mr. Obama said. They have not listened to what is really said by him and have not read about issues or ideas.
As far as McCain, he should have been the target from the beginning.
Because of Hillarys negative campaigning, the things she said about Mr. Obama are being used by the Repugs against him. Her own words on film. If Hillary had spent the last 16 mos.attacking McCain, instead of Mr Obama, I would have respected her. He was civil and respectful of her throughout even if we posters have not been.

This is going to sound really petty but ... putting aside the content of what they may be saying ... just listen to the tone and tenor of each of their voices. McCain sounds tired, old and a wimp ... Obama's voice is clear, strong and energetic. Why would you want to vote for someone who sounds like a feather could knock him over?

John in Ohio   June 5th, 2008 11:14 am ET

Anybody else amused that the McCain campaign commercials make him sound like he's running as a Democrat?
Green Power promises? Check.
Corporate Accountability promises? Check.
Affordable Healthcare promises? Check.

But these are all empty promises, and nobody will be fooled. If it comes down to voting for a Democrat, and a Republican who has to run as a Democrat-sounding Republican, the Democrat will win.

An email this a.m. from Hillary states she will be supporting obama. Sorry Hillary, but I WILL NOT. Just because you lost doesn't mean I suddenly think he's the man for the job.He is unfit as ever.

Jacklyn, NC   June 5th, 2008 11:13 am ET

It is nice to hear that McCain and Obama can talk with one another, but Obama is his own man and he should not listen to the Republican rhetoric of John McCain. It is only G.W. Bush talking just as he did in the 2000 and 2004 election to get people to buy into his foolishness to get the upper hand of his opponent. Obama, you are a very smart man so do not be pulled into this game with these thugs and if they want to say that you are being partisan, let them speak it loudly. These are tactics to use against you during their campaigning but hang strong to your word and do not be a softie and dive into their politics.

Ed   June 5th, 2008 11:12 am ET

A civil discussion? Just wait until the swift boaters start running those Rev. Wright reruns. I will betcha that they will even come up with a member of the congregation who will say Obama was hooting and hollering and high fiving just like the rest of them.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   June 5th, 2008 11:10 am ET

McCain just wants to talk about war, that's all he knows. Plus he's boring as all get out.

Randy - Denver   June 5th, 2008 11:09 am ET

While I suspect that both men will try to run a campaign like statesmen I do not think the parties and their supporters can do it. The RNC has shown, already, that they are willing to take things out of context and use them in their advertoisments. I expect no better from the DNC. I also have read enough of these blogs to know that the SUPPORTERS will post all kinds of crap here and on utube, start e-mails telling lies about both candidates, and buy air time to twist and distort facts (swiftboating) from both side. So while the candidates may run a statesman like campaign the rest of the country will go back to cut-throat lies and distorted facts and both candidates will take the blame for it and we will spend the next six months hearing "I do not endorse that statement" and "yeah right they have their supoporters say it then deny it all politics" Too bad these are two honest, honorable men running this time and the hatreds in this country will destroy them both so neither would be as effective a leader as they could be. Maybe we can someday learn to disagree without castigating those we disagree with but like som any other things when people cannot find a REAL reason why their point of view is more correct they attack the other and the others points.

Steve   June 5th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Obama told McCain to "..leave my Hillary alone".
McCain told Obama "Hillary and her 18 million voters are mine!"

Dee   June 5th, 2008 11:09 am ET

I am truly sick of all those Clinton supporters who keep whinning so much. She lost. Its that simple. They underestimated the thirst and hunger for change in this country. She did not have a game plan beyond Feb 5th. Now if you want to vote for McCain, go right ahead. Afterall, you have earned that right to vote on the backs of slaves who have sacrificed to give you that right. Please let Sen. Obama alone and quit the democratic party if you must. But for crying out loud, stop your bloody whinning and grow a pair.

Ironman   June 5th, 2008 11:09 am ET

What do you think the History books will say about HRC?

jr   June 5th, 2008 11:07 am ET

It's obvious that many of you Obama supporters were never taught the meaning of respect when you were growing up, if in fact you have grown up.

John McCain, unlike Obama has a life long record of service and sacrifice for his country. John McCain, unlike Obama has a life long record of pushing government reform. John McCain, unlike Obama has a record of reaching across the aisle to the other party in an effort to get things done in a bipartisan way. If you don't like John McCain that's fine, then show your dislike by casting your vote for Obama in November. Stop the childish behavior and show some civility and respect during this process and in turn your candidate will receive the same.

Some people on here are ridiculous. Nikki says Obama is the "antichrist" and you feel sorry for the people who follow him. WOW...what have you been doing for the last 8 years. If anyone is the antichrist it is and was Bush..who placed us in a meaningless war and is the cause of thousands of people..Americans and Iraqis deaths. Obama has only spoke on unity for all Americans and to end the war. As for "Hillary was Forced Out By Sexism" your opinion is so jaded that you must not even watch what Obama says. He has been praising her for her hard work and leadership for the past month. He even attributed the entire first part of his speech to her on Tues. Don't get so caught up in the fact that she lost that you won't do what's best for the country....and what's best is NOT 4 more years of Bush!! We can't afford that!!

This moderators and journalists are so loyal to Obama. It's pathetic, my comments never get posted here, but always on the ABC site. People are right, CNN never talks about McCain and acts as if he doesn't exist. What about the Rezko story?? Obama definitely had a hand in some of those dealings. I read a thesis Obama wrote in 1995. His "change" everyone is so excited about only benefits african americans. All the references of change from the thesis represent the Black Value System. So all the caucasian americans voting for him and expecting this big change, you're going to be in for a big surprise. I think people need to get the Arby's sign out of their eyes. This guys not for the change you think!

james - Hillary supporter   June 5th, 2008 11:01 am ET

Simple, vote Obama! I respect McCain, but he will choose a running mate who will appeal to his base and will have a very real chance of being the next president (how old is McCain now?). I don't believe McCain means a lot of his positions, seeing as he changed them only when he was getting through the Republican primaries, but the dude is one scare away from a place at Arlington cemetary. And the reason he changed his positions (he can't really go for it next time, he's too old) is the very reason we can't vote for him.

Are most people that short sighted? We will be paying an average of $2000 – $3000 more per family in taxes next year. We will have more social welfare programs with a government that is not able to keep them in check. Instead of paying for the medical expences of those who can't afford healthcare – our gov't will be adding the insurance middleman who will take their cut as well. Pork barrel spending will continue.
I am an independant – but a Democtarically controlled house – sennate and pres will be just as bad as having them all controlled by the Republicans.

John McCane is nothing more than a tramp who uses Bush to collect $35 million, only to break ranks with him a week later for political expediency.

His speech on Tuesay was lame, childish, repetitious, weak, irrelevant, and dishonest.

Obviously he needs new speech writers. Also, stealing Obama's message of change shows there is nothing original about McCane.

One more thing: McCane should spend some of his wife's money to fix his teeth, if he is going to continue to force his stupid grin on the American people.

Let's see how long McCrazy holds to his statement about keeping it at a "civil discussion". Last time he made a similar statement he starting with juvenile slams on Obama just hours later. It seems McCain has a problem with sticking to his word. Not only on this issue, but abortion, tax cuts, etc. He's flipped more times than Romney – or – maybe he just can't remember what the "mavericks" true convictions are.

Is Anybody Listening?   June 5th, 2008 10:52 am ET

NOW Obama proposes a” Lincoln/Douglas” debate to counter McCain’s initial proposal for a debate (such a debate is PRECISELY what Hillary proposed but Obama declined). NOW that he has his own thing in the bag (with the money of lobbyists), Obama wants to keep lobbyists out of the DNC - except that he will plant ANOTHER one of his operatives in the DNC - just like before. NOW that he has his own thing in the bag, he talks "tough" about terrorists - just like always. It makes me furious how Obama continues to steal other people’s ideas (even “Audacity of Hope” – Jeremiah Wright’s sermon) - and make them his own. IS ANYBODY LISTENING? What a fake and opportunist! I don’t applaud or support people like that! I prefer ORIGINAL thinkers.

Not true. Throughout the entire campaign, Obama has ALWAYS said that there were few differences between him and Hillary. That's the first thing you hear. He never got personal. He NEVER brought up personal problems like impeachment, travel-gate, whitewater, NOTHING.

Hillary was the one that got personal, getting her supporters to send false emails about him being a muslim, ad nauseum.

She was the one with the Kitchen Sink strategy, and he still rose above it.

If you really want to support Hillary, then try to convince HER to be a bit nicer to her fellow Democrats. Save the nastiness for John McCain. He deserves it!

Kenny in little ol SC   June 5th, 2008 10:51 am ET

I think that if they are going to have a "civil discussion", it should involve just a few simple questions:

1) When are we getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan?

2) What are you going to do about crude oil and energy problems?

3) Social Security/Healthcare? Your thoughts....

4) Education?

I think that if they give a straight answer to these questions, then I would take that over a civilized discussion anyday. By the way, I do feel that McCain is a little outdated to how things are going in the country as a whole, and you can't blame him because his age is the culprit.

And for the record, I agree, THIS IS NOT A GAME. This is probably the most important election in history right now, up there with Bush II/Gore and Bush I/Clinton. What happens in November will probably effect is for 8-10 years, whover the president is and whatever term they serve.

I do believe that McCain is not the guy for the job, and believe that a better VP pick for Obama would be Edwards, someone I like and is from my home state.

By the way, who the heck is McCain's running mate? Have we heard anything else about that???

Valerie   June 5th, 2008 10:50 am ET

I would love to see the day comes when all citizens of the US can unite as one. I am proud of the accomplishments that have been made in terms of race relations. Those folks who will not vote for Senator Obama because he is black, just don't know how uneducated, and foolish they sound to the world. As an immigrant, I am proud, and I can only hope and pray that this great country will fulfill its greatness, and show the world how civilized we have become.

I pray that those people who exhibit racist sentiments will take a deep breath, and understand how dangerous racism is, and how destructive it is for our children and grand children. Senator Obama will be for everyone, so those who feel threatened, need not be. Afterall, Senator Obama is from a multi-cultural background, so how could he be against anyone because of their race, culture, and ethnicity? Racisim is poisonous, destructive, and unnecessary.

sharon everett   June 5th, 2008 10:50 am ET

First, to everyone who will not vote for various reasons, what do you think will happen if you don't. You will still be unhappy no matter the outcome. everyone needs to remember at one time in this country, there were some among us who weren't allowed that right, you need to do it
just for the simple fact you can. I have spoken with many people who have parents who migrated here and cannot vote but they made sure their children did and feel it is so important and cannot figure out why people with a natural born right are so apathetic about voting.

Second, we are in trouble. Have been for a loooong time. No I don't think Obama is the second coming, but he does represent change. In more ways than one. Give the guy a chance, look at what he has done so far come out of nowhere to be the star of the show. I hate to say it , but he is our best option. America was loved around the world at one time, worshipped even, not so much now. We have had 7.5 yrs of a total image obliteration. I am almost ashamed of where I'm from. We used to be the greatest country on earth, but our citizens have been raped and pillaged by corporations and those in power til we are almost defenseless. Take back your voice and vote, for anyone just do it!!!!

i can;'t want for these side by side town halls. i doubt we will see ten, but at least 5 plus the 3 debates. there are big differences, one is how they look and talk. obama, tall, young, forceful but level. mccain, short, somewhat feeble, meek but love to sneer and giggle. one talks about making the world better and diplomacy, other hawks war and isolationism.

as far as hillary's supporters go. she only wins the popular vote when you include a state with only votes cast for her. how is that fair??

also i plead with you to look into mccain's personal and public record as to his treatment of women. divorced his loyal wife who stood by him through 7 years in a POW camp, after cheating on her and after she was hurt in a car accident. then he marries a pill popping debutant 20 years younger.
he want's to overturn roe v. wade and will get his chance.
he wants abstinence only education. which has been proven ineffective in preventing pregnancy or the spread of STD'S
he voted against a bill the would have made insurance companies add birth control under prescription plans.
he voted against an expansion of the chips program to insure more school aged children.
ho consistently votes against head start programs.

he is a bad choice. and that's not even getting into the war, taxes, healthcare, trade.

--------–
Rezko was found guilty, and that's about it. It doesn't affect Obama because he wasn't accused of anything, nothing new came out of the trial. There's nothing there, so keep looking.
Let's put it this way: Rev. Wright will hurt Obama more than Tony Rezko.

Mike   June 5th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Obama is Bush all over again. Bush with Enron and now Obama with Excelon. Obama earmarks money to defense contractors and says he is against the Iraq war. He gets contributions from drug companies and then pushes legislation to them. His wife gets a $200,000 year raise at her job the day Obama becomes senator and then Obama earmarks money to her company.

It is politics as usual all over again but worse than before.

That is why I am voting for McCain because the only real candidate Hillary is out now.

That is very nice of Mr.McCain to call on Mr. Obama. I hope Obama does'nt get trapped by these nicities and let people think that Mr. McCain is a leader and Obama a follower. To win the election you want to make people feel that you are the natural leader. Be careful.

Hey BRIAN IN KNOXVILLE:

So you are going to vote for McCain, this means you want:

MORE WAR AND DEATH TO OUR SOLDIERS,

MORE SOLDIERS COMING HOME MAIMED

MORE NATIONAL DEBT, NOW OVER $10 TRILLION

MORE AMERICANS WHO HAVE TO FILE BANKRUPTCY BECAUSE THEY CAN NOT PAY FOR MEDICAL BILLS

MORE UNEMPLOYMENT...... AND MORE OF THE SAME.......

Brian in Knoxville, please, think things over. I would rather have a young inexperienced guy, than one with all the experience of McCain who has failed to realize when Bush was lying!

Charles   June 5th, 2008 10:34 am ET

Niki....I am a Senior Pastor of a church in SC and your comments are what make Christians look uneducated and spooky. The Bible states that the Anti-Christ would come out of Europe anyway. Obama was saved by the blood of JESUS too. So what you are saying is that you are worthy of redemtiom by Christ and his is not. If you don't believe his confession that he is a believer and follower of Jesus Christ then why should we believe you? No one deserve to be called the devil or the Anti-Christ. Would you like it. Jesus in the Gospels warns us about thinking that we are good or pure and that others are evil. He explains that we come short of GOD and it is by him that we are saved. So why are you saved? and what gives you the right to call someone else evil. Obama is the devil and Bush is GOD. And you are a Christian with this type of mind. This is just another reason why a lot of people don't got to church and don't like trust Christian because of the bigoted ones.

Susie   June 5th, 2008 10:34 am ET

I am so DISAPPOINTED in CNN!!!!!!!!! You have been so biased in your coverage! It makes people wonder what Obama may have promised CNN (or those/someone who work there)!!!!!!!!!!!! When we choose to stop tuning into CNN because of your bias, what will happen then???????? CNN should be neutral; put out the information on all candidates, and then let the people decide!!!! CNN is so terribly biased, it's disgusting to watch and listen. I've been tuning you out lately!!!!!!! Please give this serious consideration!

Cyndi   June 5th, 2008 10:34 am ET

Obama hsa said over and over agin that he trusts the American people. That Americans are basically kind and decent people that want better schools for their children, a good job and dignity upon retirement.

This won't be easy. But nothing worth fighting for is. We've got your back Senator!

Phil of Colorado   June 5th, 2008 10:33 am ET

I note that the number of CNN articles supporting Obama in the CNN "news" far outweighs those even addressing McCain. The only positive comment in the CNN POlitical Ticker is where Obama and McCain spoke together. I wonder why.

Brenda, New York   June 5th, 2008 10:33 am ET

Obama's supporters should be a little more respectful to the Clinton's and stop being so hateful. If she would have won the nomination I would have want her to pick Obama for VP. Hillary has worked very hard and has earned the right to be his VP. If Obama choses someone else for his VP and does not offer the position to her first that would be very dirty. However, if he does offers it to her and she rejects it that would be understandable. Hillary Clinton has been a great Sentor for New York and has fought hard for healthcare nation wide, and Bill Clinton was a wonderful President, so they have earn respect and should receive it. I am a Clinton and democratic supporter, but that would change if Obama does not treat her right, I would hate to support the republican party, but I will if she is treated unfairly and I'm sure many of her supporters feel the same way. Also for everyone to suggest that she should have endorsed Obama the same day he won, is not nessarsarily true. People have to understand that she has worked very hard and it was not easy giving up something she believe so much in. Therefore, let her decide when it's the right time. As I understand it she will be endorsing him on Saturday, which is not next month, it's only in two days away. So back off media and Obama's suppporters, and let the cards play out. I will be for either canidate, you should all think the same because "God" does not like ugly. Remember Karma is for real. Democrates '08

The republican strategist might as well hang it up. To win, they will have to go lower than the clintons with the racism thing and you better believe that racism is alive and well but "racist" the real ones have no power. That's old America. Republicans of good sense "educated" are just not going to sit buy and side with "poor" white trash who can less about prosperity.

Good, I think that perhaps we will see a new kind of campaign this fall! A campaign where the candidates talk about ISSUES and their plans, rather THAN TEARING EACH OTHER APART!

Most people I know, in their 50's are sick and tired of the RNC's swiftboating, destructive ads, brutal personal attacks! They WONT work this time!

We, the people, would like to know where the candidate stands on various issues....... we want and DESERVE an intelligent debate rather than just destroying one another!

If this is how Obama and his supporters plan on uniting the country, by calling those who disagree with them "scum," then change is an empty promise, we can count on 4-8 more years of business as usual.

Paul - New York   June 5th, 2008 10:29 am ET

I hope that Obama understands that when McCain takes all of Hillary Clinton's voters and wins, may be he should have made her the VP. McCain probably told him that and said that if he doesnt take her, he will. Won't that be interesting.

DAN   June 5th, 2008 10:29 am ET

McCain will be a good president, conservatives can't stand him and many republicans don't like him but he's everybodies best choice now that Hillary 's out. He's more to the center and will get the independents who are a growing movement and anybody who knows a bit of history knows he is not like Bush, this guy went to war for his country something Obama and Bush would never do. Obama voted for Bush and Chenney's energy bill and now we're paying big bucks at the pump but McCain voted against giving them are tax money in subsidies. Obama=Bush the incompetance team. Vote for McCain

Noel   June 5th, 2008 10:28 am ET

haha, Charlotte, you are such a troll placed by the clinton campaign on these blogs to tote your useless rhetoric.
Ive been reading for a while now, and I really do enjoy how you come on and post messages that have absolutely nothing to do with the actual article but instead you push some agenda that the campaign wants you to.
If you and the rest of the Clinton supporters want to vote McCain, or write in Hillary and take away democratic votes and try and sabotage the presidential run, go right ahead. The Obama camp will do fine without you idiots. And then in 4 or 8 years time, when you and everyone you know is living in a trailer because they cant afford their housing, and when your children cant afford to go to college because you cant find a job that pays well enough, or they simply dont have the grades because the US education system is failing miserably, and when you thousands of american men and women having to leave home for their 10th tour of duty in Iraq, and when you see US respectability completely shattered around the world by virtue of the arrogant and insensitive way we conduct foreign policy..... THEN, you can turn to your son or daughter or whoever and say, IM SORRY, Im sorry I completely ruined your future, that was the dumbest day of my life.... but knowing you Hillary supporters, youd probably say in the same breath "I'm glad I made my point".
So congratulations, do what you need to do, and when the fertilizer hits the fan, you only have yourself to blame.

Jeff - Illinois   June 5th, 2008 10:28 am ET

I am constantly stunned when I read these message boards. Half of you whine about this or that, and the other half spend their time repeating things they have heard from others that are generally not true. Just once, I wish people would comment on what matters. This need to watch the process like a sport, instead of getting in the game yourself to confront the serious problems facing all of us, baffles me.

McCain or Obama are only as good as the people that support them. IF you want change demand it. If you want one candidate or another work for them, vote for them, refute the rhetoric...

From the posts by Obama supporters, I think they can't quite understand what being civil means. So immature.

Harry   June 5th, 2008 10:25 am ET

The Republicans have a two-pronged approach. They will try to make McCain look fair, honorable and even sensitive while his cronies throw the kitchen sink at Obama. The best forum for McCain to present his "positive campaign" image is the town hall meeting where you can expect him repeat and then denounce the swift-boat attack ads and outrageous accusations against his opponent. He wants to avoid press-moderated debates and even You Tube type debates where he is more likely to be held accountable for his campaign's bad behavior.

The Lantern   June 5th, 2008 10:25 am ET

Anyone who votes for McCain b/c they are too childish to stop whining that Hillary did not win the nomination is an idiot. Period. THAT is what fails the Democratic Party. Not the "Democratic Leadership". 4 more years of a war your grandchildren will be paying for? 4 more years of privatetized insurance cpmpanies so that countries like India, England and Canada are still ahead of us in taking care of their own people? More tax breaks for the rich? You'd actually vote for that b/c you're a sore loser? Why be a party member at all...

The only reason mccain is doing this is to try and exploit Obama's weakness when he is attacked personally about family friends or church issues. Just like Clinton did in their last debate.
Mccain is being fooled by the republican campaign establishment to believe that they are going to have a civil town hall talk.

I will beware if I was Obama, Mccain seems to have thought about this a long time. Take some time Obama to think about this and go in on your own terms.

Mccain want to have a civil debate , but I don't think that Rovians are thinking of the same thing.

Hillary supports it's time to give it up. Hillary would not want you to act this way in the general election. Do not do this to her legacy. If you turn against Obama because he won then it will go down in history that the CLINTONS distroyed the democratic party. Is this how you want Hillary remembered??? Why would you want that for Hillary if you really truely did supporter her. Do not distroy her good name by not voting for Obama.

VeriTas   June 5th, 2008 10:21 am ET

I think this will be an interesting and relatively civilized campaign.
The Obama/Clintonzilla nightmare is finally over and we don't have to listen to her whining any more.
Obama is very likable and McCain is very old – these things do tip in favor of Obama.
I actually am in favor of Obma picking Clinton for the VP slot. I do think it would be a dream ticket, indeed. In this case a dream ticket for McCain!!! But I would be very disappointed with Obama's strategists if they dont convince him otherwise.
Talking is good and now we are looking at the next president in every debate, EVERY debate (we just dont know which one it is).
Let the games begin!

All of these "Hillary Supporters" claiming they will vote for McCain are FAKES....don't believe it. I swear they are worse then spam bots flooding message boards with this non-sense. These people never really "supported" Hillary in the first place. And if they did actually check the ballot for Hillary, it was a vote against Obama, not out of support for Hillary......you can take that to the bank! Prove me wrong!

Dena in SC   June 5th, 2008 10:21 am ET

This will be fun to watch....McSame will stumble and stutter just like his idot idol Bush. Without notes in front of him or Leiberman to help him correct his answers he'll be doomed. I think McSame bit off more than he can chew by challenging Obama.

McCain will start off by saying "My Friend", and give that silly grin. At that point most people will be laughing their heads off saying....I told you so, I won the bet.

YES WE CAN! YES WE WILL   June 5th, 2008 10:19 am ET

That is good, but Obama needs to get McCain on his own turf, debates and speeches. McCain wants to do 10 townhall style meetings because that is his strongest area so they say, but I question that, McCain does not appear to have a chance against Obama when it comes to speaking to people McCain is all over the place when it comes to delivering a message he flip flops from one thing to another as if he forgets what he has recently said about any issue besides staying in Iraq. We nee to know more of what McCain understands about the economy because it is questionable what with Graham his adviser's shady history. Graham is said to be responsible for much of the mortgage downfall and he is advising McCain to have UNREGULATED mortgage policies that could only benefit banks and mortgage companies. That my friends is the worst thing for homeowners, it would leave them unprotected.

McCain knows NOTHING about the economy everything he has said thus far has been from Graham, I can't wait for that to be reported on.

Glenn   June 5th, 2008 10:18 am ET

I know Obama will be cordial, but McBush lacks the character to live up to their agreement. He will make uncordial remarks and quickly apologize, but the damage is done. Then his campaign will make uncordial remarks and he will apologize, but again the damage is done. Then some state GOP campaign or some "swift boat "group will attack and he says he has no control over them. When Obama responds to the attacks, then McBush starts his wimpy whinning. McBush may have been a war hero, POW and a pilot but none of those experiences 40 years years ago equate with the ability to lead, the competence to lead, the vision to lead or the the intelligence to lead. His age, senility and health are serious issues that need to be addressed. Also, Cindy's past and problems will be an issue. His support of Bush's war and economic issues will be even more of an issue. The country can ill afford to have McBush or the GOP in office after their disastrous eight years of Bush.

To all the Democrats(NO REpubeLICANS PLEASE) – CNN please post !
I am an Obama supporter and i respect HRC supporters choice. But the FACT is the primaries are OVER.I also know it can
be tough to suddenly let go, especially when your candidate did not win.
We are all adults, though sometimes our action/blogging says otherwise.Trust me on this one, we have been mean to EITHER SIDES, and
all of us – each one of us – are to be blamed for that.
Just because your candidate is a woman, she doesnt get any special treatment. She is the one who decided to run and what she got is not different from
what any one of the possible candidates would get.Sometimes it was tough, but hey, she knew what she was getting into and she was BOLD enough to

Obama, understands that a leader has to prepare and not go off the cuff. It is the sign of an idiot to have a debate and not come prapared. This is not what leaders should do, a when a whole nation is watching. It would be careless, and juvenile. Leaders have a responsibility to chose their answers carefully because their response will affect many people. Preparation is the sign of a true leader, not some hot headed juvenile remarks from McCain's old policies and old and tried war answers. Obama is coming with new ideas, and new ideas need tweeking and refining. Obama you call the shots, don't get pressured, he needs you!!!

Concerned INDEPENDENT CT voter   June 5th, 2008 10:15 am ET

While reading the comments on Oprahs happy dance, I was struck by the number of people who say we who don't vote for Obama are racist. They say that it is ok to vote for him only because he is black but not ok to vote against him because he is black. Color has nothing to do with my vote. I could vote for Colin Powell, in a heartbeat. Obama is a blackman with nothing on his resume to convince me he is qualified. I will not vote for McCain, I will however, write Hillary on my ballot in November. I have never, in my adult life written in a candidate, I will this year, even if I am the only one. I also hope Hillary does not choose to be his running mate, she would ursurp him without even trying. Why? Because everone knows who should be in charge. You cannot, as President, have someone better qualified as a running mate. Even Caroline Kenndy as VP would be a threat to his authority. I don't know where he will find someone who won't out shine him?

If McCain want a civil discussion – then tell him to call of the Bush's good old boys along with Karl Rove running the Swift boat gang. They are starting their crap again to sink Obama – just like they did John Kerry. Mccain will do anything to win because the republicans are afraid of Obama.

Steve the Soothsayer   June 5th, 2008 10:14 am ET

Civil discussion requires truth-telling. Lies and distortions are unacceptable to people of reason. As a first step in the verification process, let's have both men's complete voting records laid out clearly in the media for all to see. Should either man have voted in opposition to his stated principles, let him explain why. The town hall meeting format for debate and discussion is ideal in that it tends to filter out media bias, provided that the questioners are selected randomly by an impartial monitor.

She is the one who decided to run and what she got is not different from
what any one of the possible candidates would get.Sometimes it was tough, but hey, she knew what she was getting into and she was BOLD enough to
go forward despite knowing the challenges.I respect her for that and she is indeed an inspiration to all.

I hope that these two campaigns can keep to what they both said they would and Stick to the issues. I think it is important for the dialog to consist of current and important events, not Obama's former Pastor and not McCain's age or past issues with federal lobbyists or political actions committees.
I think that we have two, VERY smart guys here that both care for their country deeply. Lets see how the country responds.

Go Obama!

Obamacrat!   June 5th, 2008 10:10 am ET

If any of you really believe we're in for a "civil discussion on the issues" you haven't been paying attention.

While Senator Obama had his attention focused on his campaign vs. Senator Clinton McCain was throwing spears at Obama's back; repeatedly bringing up “distracting, useless crap” like Hamas "endorsing" Obama and his relationship with the Reverend Wright. If you want to get down to the real issues and away from the "distracting, useless crap," you better not watch this race, because just as I'm sure that Obama will continue to take the high road I'm equally as sure that McCain will continue to perpetrate the same old republican campaign strategies.

Matt   June 5th, 2008 10:09 am ET

I'm guessing the conversation went something like this...

McCain: "Hey Barack, let's have town hall meetings and field blind questions from a wide range of Americans, not just debate moderators."

Barack: " Ummm John...I ummmm....well ummmmm...Ok, gotta ummmm go."

Agent of Change from FL   June 5th, 2008 10:09 am ET

I agree, BMW, we do not need anymore bickering between the candidates (that's child's play), we need to discuss the issues.

AND.......

Eventually vote for Barack Obama! LOL

Dave, IN   June 5th, 2008 10:08 am ET

Obama neighbor Tony Rezko is convicted of 16 counts of wire and mail fraud, money laundering, and aiding and abetting bribery for selling government jobs in Illinois. This latest example of Candidate Obama's lack of perception and judgment adds to a growing list:
"That's not the Tony Rezko I knew."
"That's not the Father Michael Pfleger I knew."
"That's not the Bill Ayers I knew."
"That's not the Reverend Wright I knew."

Think how you will feel when President Obama says,
"That's not the Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (Iran) I knew", or
"That's not the Kim Jong Il (N. Korea) I knew" or
"That's not the Khaled Meshal (Hamas) I knew."

Maybe they can talk about that.

It's time for REAL change in Washington, it's time for Barack Obama for president !

haas   June 5th, 2008 10:06 am ET

obama is a much better public speaker and has the ability to fire up a crowd...i think this will be a disaster for johnny

DLF   June 5th, 2008 10:05 am ET

Don't count on it!!!

Clinton held back because she was so supportive of the party that literally PI$$ED on her!

But McCain is not beholden to the Democratic party and he can turn it loose on Obama!

Even so, there are ways McCain can come down hard on Obama without coming across as being excessively negative.

This ex Hillary supporter who also contributed to her campaign is keeping his promise and will now support and vote for McCain!

Dan Cahill   June 5th, 2008 10:05 am ET

I like it. Both these guys profess and seem to generally practice cutting through partisan BS. I think all Americans, Republican, Independent, Democrat, are tired of partisan bickering and political manuvering that lowers the level of discussion in Washington. Hope they also follow that idea for a number of Lincoln-Douglas style debates ... that both McCain and Obama have seemed to agree on ...

I certainly think Obama, at least rhetorically, is a lot better than many of the fire-mouthed democratic pres candidates that have come before him .. and McCain seems to b e a lot less partisan and of an idealogue than the GOP nominees before him ...

If America was a corporation and based off the performance of the last couple of years in all areas like the economy, foreign policy, healthcare and security to name a few, you would have the CEO removed and when you are searching for a new CEO, I don’t think you would hire one with a similar resume as his predecessor. The John McCain of old is the one I would have probably voted for in this election, the new John McCain I will not; that being said, I will vote for Barack Obama in November. In review the things that matter to me, this is how I score these two candidates.

1. Economy Obama
2. Education Obama
3. Energy & Oil Obama
4. Foreign Policy Obama
5. Woman and Civil Rights Obama
6. Homeland Security McCain
7. Universal Healthcare Obama
8. Immigration McCain
9. Iraq War Obama
10. Iran Obama

As you can see, I am voting based of the issues. IT’S REALLY THAT SIMPLE!

election watcher   June 5th, 2008 10:04 am ET

Becky, KS   June 5th, 2008 10:03 am ET

It's not a game! Stop calling it a game. It's very serious business. I wish Obama the best of luck. He's going to need it as it gets swift-boated just like Kerry did.

We know nothing about this new comer to the "game" and as his beliefs slowly come out, those that aren't hidden by the media lovefest, the DNC will know that it backed the wrong candidate.

So cry me a river, Obama. Get used to it. McCain will use everything he can against you. And I believe there are skeletons in your closet. But hey, you should have thought about this before you entered "the game."

Connie Sturgeon   June 5th, 2008 10:03 am ET

I think this would be all right if Barack does not let McBush dictate to him when, where and how the meetings are held. I think they should wait for a month at least. I would never offer McBush a ride either let him and the RNC spend their money.Barack also needs to bring a 16×20 or larger poster of Bush and McCain hugging to hang up.

Connie form Indiana

Doc   June 5th, 2008 10:03 am ET

Yes sir! Let the games begin. But b4 we start are there rules??? Or does anything go! Cause i'm thinking the focus should be the issues.
And if you are a Clinton supporter i would hope you either join the rest of us Democrats or gracefully sitout and watch the game from the sidelines.

"To the issues, and the candidates of teh general election, God Bless"
*Toast*

Herman in LA   June 5th, 2008 10:02 am ET

This is just a ploy because McCain don't like the big crowds because he fears that he would be heckled about the war so this is his escape from the media and non-supporters of the failed war in Iraq. I would urge Barack to be very careful of the darn republicans and McCain. Don't let the republicans dictate what’s going to happen in the general election I don’t trust them for one bit.

Andy J, NY   June 5th, 2008 10:01 am ET

These aren't games. I am so disgusted with the way people view these elections.

If i have to read one more "Democrats Unite!" or "Come to the winning team! Obama 08!", Im probably going to punch myself in the face.

This is not a football game, it is the future of our country. If you took the time to look at Obama's policies instead of listening to his anti-bush empty rhetoric, you would see this guy is a socialist. Pure and simple, wealth redistributing, constitutional rights limiting socialist fascist.

As far as the 2nd amendment goes: We don't pick and choose what parts of the Constitution we like. I'm moving to Montana.

The Clear Thinking Independent   June 5th, 2008 10:01 am ET

Let's keep this about the substantive issues that matter not the superficial ones ...

GOP & CNN ... we're talking to YOU .....

Hint ... flag pins are superficial and airtime given to those types of topics will turn off voters and viewers ..

In fact, when bloggers see conversations being driven in that direction, if 20 of us in a row just typed something like .....

"As an intelligent American voter, I hold CNN and the candidates responsible, for this sophomoric distraction. It's not what I care about".

... we can take back this election process.

Hillary scared him big time on this, and of course he couldn't keep up with McCain on facts. One year in the Senate-the next two running for president. Not enough time to absorb much.........

One of the blessings of not having Hillary on the ballot is that the tone of the debates will be more civil than otherwise. Both Obama and McCain tend to be courteous and respectful, but Hillary is another animal. Her smirks, sarcasm, cackling laughter will be absent from the campaign, and aren't we fortunate?

Just let Obama speak ... listen to his words ... hear how he touches people ... feel the "goose bup" experience ... and wave goodbye to four more years of Bush!

Obama will surround himself with only the best advisers, and will bring an end to "politics as usual". We need this change. We've been crushed under the Bush regime. We've seen him and his cronies break constitutional law day after day, and get away with it.

Well unfortunately John McCain is a weak kneed canidate for the republicans . They don't like him no more than half the democrats like Obama. Fortunatly the Republican party doesn'tt let their leadership or canidate call the shots like the democrat party leaders and canidates does. Each state will run its own and each private group will run their own adds. So what John McCain really wants are thinks is irrevelant thank God. "OH" by the way I love the statement that "OBAMA" said about his major contributor "REZKO" that is not the man I knew. I believe he has made that statement before. I think in regards to reverend wright, father pfleger,Ayers the terriost, the other professor "ARAB" i believe and of course poor old "WHITE" granny who he threw under the bus and now the "OBAMA" MESSIAH is going to raise her from her racist remarks to live again to try and shore up and get the white vote. I reckon what he will say about his wife when the republicans play the video on her in the "OCTOBER" surprise.Either he knew these people and know what they are, he has no judgement or he is an outright liar. Sen. Mcsame is the ideal candidate to gain the 2nd spot come November. Campaign for change, troop withdrawal from iraq and equal right for all have been the backbone behind obama's success.

One would hope that after the disgraceful way McCain was treated by Bush/Rove in 2000, and watching the swiftboating of 2004, he and Obama might actually be willing to abandon the politics of fear and personal attacks in favor of focusing on issues and positions. Heaven knows that would upset the national, 24 hour mainstream media as they now seem to thrive on controversy for ratings sake ad ad dollars. Politics and partisanship doesn't have to be about mudslinging.

However, with the special interest groups on both sides, I don't expect this to be anything but maybe marginally better this year.

ct voter   June 5th, 2008 9:46 am ET

This is too good to be true, an actual honest campaign putting politics aside and being civil towards each other, no spin or smere tactics, actually talking about the issues! This is truly the road to change, and it's long overdue, I mean look where the spin and smere tactics an fear mongering got us the last 8 years....

Every candidate from the Democratic and Republican party candidate since I've been voting (34 years) they would change things in Washington and improve things for Americans. Guess what. Nothing has changed.

Do we really expect that a newcomer home boy w/ no resume and experience, and an old codger who's been on the teat of government since he graducated college will really change anything?

Vote Libertarian–return America to the people, and create some REAL change in Washington. Bob Barr-2008.

I hope that after the dust clears minds and heart will too. Boxers fight hard in the ring trying to win because that is the name of the game but after the fight they hug and or shake hands and move on to the next battle and ours is John McSame.

By civil discussion, I guess Obama wants to exclude any discussion of experience, vision, and intelligent policy and stick to race, gender and age.

CLINTON SUPPOTERS SHOULD TAKE NOTE. WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOUR VOTES BUT WE DONT NEED THEM. WE WON WITHOUT YOU BECAUSE OBAMA IS BETTER AT ORGANIZING. For those few Obama haters…what is he going to do to our country? Maybe he will wreck the economy, Drive us to a pointless war, Run up the deficit, Make us hated around the world? Been there and living that. Should I continue.
Now stop your hating and do what most countries in the world are doing at this moment and admire Barack Hussein Obama because whether or not you all like it I and a lot of (ignorant) people are going to do whatever it takes to hear a State of the Union address from this man. How's them apples!
PS All McCain supporters should be drafted first and if they are women be present on the day when he and his judges overturn a woman's right to choose.

Henri Brunot.   June 5th, 2008 9:31 am ET

One thing that always reflects on any Kennedy is humanity. That's why the black race love the Kennedys ,respect them and see them as one of ours.
further ,When we think about Martin Luther King ,you see a human a black man of course but not a racist.he loved every body.
In Obama we see a 1/2 white and 1/2 black because really he couldn't love his mom and hate his dad. There's no doubt Obama love the blacks with a same level he loves the blacks So , we may not be smart enough to see that Obama is sent to reconciliate the whites with blacks.First in Obama I see a Kennedy, a Martin Luther king walking hands to hands toward the white house where together they're going to reorganize the system and save the americans that work so hard daily but living in poverty for the most.
So, it's not for no reason we're going to have a black president and a white vice-president in the white house.
Mc-cain represent the end of a regime on the way. ...

I respect mcbush for what he did years ago, but as the GOP front runner, I can not support you. I want my goverement and country back and repugs sure wont do it so I will vote for Obama. I think Obama should stick it to him and the GOP policies even if he is 71 years old. He will try to play grand-pa and then play dirty, so we must.

I think Obama will have an easier time with the republicans because the wind is blowing against them. Long war, bad economy, inflation, high fuel prices, corruption and more.

Obama played a lot of defense against Hillary but he must play offense this time around against McCain. He ought to attack from the air, ground and sea in order to win. He also needs to ask top democrates like Hillary, Rahm Emmanuel, Ted , Ed Rendell and Pelosi to campaign very hard for him.

Stacy Clarks   June 5th, 2008 9:24 am ET

The American people deserve a civil discussion between those who wish to lead the nation. Hillary Clinton proved to be very disappointing in this regard. The nation needs to move forward.

Although I do not intend to vote for John McCain, I respect his service to this country while in uniform and in the senate (at times), and I will listen to what he has to say.

C. CONCERNED CANADIAN   June 5th, 2008 9:21 am ET

"civil discussions" don't get headlines, but wouldn't it be refreshing.

It would certainly be in keeping with the claims to change that both these men advocate.

Ron L   June 5th, 2008 9:21 am ET

While Senator McCain means well and wants to do what he thinks is best for the country, he is NOT the right person to straighten out the MESS President Bush has made. I believe as time goes on and the female voters that supported Hillary reflect on the REAL reasons Hillary lost (Poorly ran campaign, too many negatives from her past, constantly trying to change the rules) they will come to the conclusion the nation will be in a MUCH BETTER situation with Obama leading the country.
It is CRITICAL that Barack puts out more detail on what he plans to do in his first year and HOW. IF he does that he could easily win by 10 to 15% of the popular vote. The country is ready for CHANGE and he stands for it much better and clearer than Senator McCain.

cletellNY   June 5th, 2008 9:20 am ET

Any televised debates that take place between McCain and Obama will only work to the latters advantage. One of Obama's strengths is his public speaking abilities and charisma on stage. Mccain however has admitted that he dislikes public speeches and is extremely weak compared to Obama in this regard. I hope it happens as soon as possible so people can get a look at the comparison. BTW did anyone see McCain walk onto the stage with B. Jindel? He looked as if he had a difficult time with those steps.

Sam   June 5th, 2008 9:20 am ET

I do so ever wish to have a civil discussion on the big decisions we have to make this fall.

Stay in Iraq or Leave

Overturn Roe v Wade or Keep it.

Leave the healthcare system as it is or Universal healthcare

Cut science funding or Increase investments in the NIH (I do hope this is approved because this will decide whethere or not I still do my research on novel antibacterial drugs in my lab) and other government funded research groups.

Nsikan   June 5th, 2008 9:19 am ET

Yes, we talk to our friends, our opponents and also our enemies. Can't imagine a world without dialogue. When he won his nomination you call to congratulate him, when you won yours he didn't care to call so, you had to call him. Humble yourself while you're exalted. Thank God for your mom and grand parents that trained you well. Good luck Senator Obama.

kelly WI   June 5th, 2008 9:18 am ET

obama doesn't know how to be civil.

TJS   June 5th, 2008 9:18 am ET

How is this possiable? After certain age about 60 we can't not get a job with federal goverment but McCain over 70 can lead the goverment.

This does not make sense. McCain should not be allowed to run for highest Fed job if we can't even apply for any job with goverment at that age.

Shrimp Barnicles, somewhere in NY   June 5th, 2008 9:17 am ET

Michelle from Colorado   June 5th, 2008 9:14 am ET

Gee, another novel idea by the man who has what it takes to get the job done. Talk to your opponent. I guess this is Obama's way of reaching across the aisle like no other presidential nominee has ever ever done. I wonder if someone suggests he brush his teeth. He would have done it if only he had a tooth brush. Or that he tie his shoes. He would have if someone would have said something sooner. He is no leader. He is a follower and the only thing that has changed about Nobama since last week is that people just like him managed to make him the Democratic nominee. When will the novelty of the color of his skin wear off and people start watching his actions and listening to his boring rhetoric????
He has no time in my book to show me anything he has done that will help the USA. It's all the same bla bla bla..."here is what I can do if only you would vote for me". the race is much more exciting when you get 2 people who show you what they have already done and how they can and will expand upon it to make our lives better.

Andy J, NY   June 5th, 2008 9:14 am ET

Wow, i can't believe CNN put out a story with McCain in the title.

I just checked and there are 6-8 stories with Obama in the headline, and zero with McCain in the headline, both on the cnn home page and the politics page.

I'm seriously considering abandoning CNN, your bias has become too disgusting to stomach much longer.

Uncle Sam   June 5th, 2008 9:14 am ET

David, Silver Spring, MD   June 5th, 2008 9:12 am ET

A civil discussion? Have you heard the kind of language McCain has been using against Obama? It's like he's daring Obama to take a swing at him.

For all his talk of "my friends," I'm not sure McCain knows how to have a civil discussion.

Bryan   June 5th, 2008 9:12 am ET

Pathetic! I can't believe that CNN has become so one sided. You cut McCain off on Tuesday, your home page today has not one McCain story and your "news"casts are slanted 75% to Obama (and Clinton). Yes, the end of the Democratic nomination struggle is news. So is the historic candidacy of Obama. But, you should strive to be more equal in your reporting - both in time and in critical insight considerations. I, for one, expect more from CNN. (I expect Fox to lean right and MSNBC to lean left. I have always thought that for the most part CNN stayed in the middle. I'm beginning to question that perception. If this continues, where is an independent still trying to figure out who to vote for over the next 5 months to go for down-the-middle news?)

Didine - Maryland   June 5th, 2008 9:11 am ET

John Mcain and Barack have good manner. I like them both. But all americains want change and barack is the one who will finally lead our country because he related to our issues more than Mcain.

Charlotte   June 5th, 2008 9:11 am ET

What does Caroline Kennedy know about what the people of America want? She has stayed out of politics and the public eye until now? Was she already asked to be VP? That would explain her sudden attraction to politics. It would also explain Ted Kennedys endorsement over the wishes of the voters in his state. Obama is the presumitive nominee. Until the conventions, no one including McCain, are the nominees. the convention is when the actual votes will be given, until then anything can happen. I will wait until the convention to see the actual results. Out of three possible scenarios on popular votes, Obama is ahead in only one. He is not my nominee. If he is the actual nominee in August and that seems likely, I will at that time know how I will vote in November. I suspect I will have to vote for Hillary, by write-in

Charlotte   June 5th, 2008 9:10 am ET

I did not know the convention had taken place? To officially clinch the nomination requires a vote at the convention. At least, until this year. Dummy me.

FB   June 5th, 2008 9:09 am ET

So, just checking the last board.

Hilliots are still whining. Demanding things from the Obama supporters.

Wrong, you were the abnoxious ones. YOU accused Obama of being a racist. The media and the political elite claimed Bill Clinton was a racist.

You have claimed from day 1 that genderism was bringing Hillary down. Wrong, it is her lying and win at all cost attitutde. It is her, and your attitude of inevitability. Remember those days?

You and Hillary have lied (popular vote, Bosnia) and manipulated the rules (FL and MI "it is clear they will not count", to "count all votes". . . but just not caucuses or any state that could hurt me).

And you blind followers regurgitate everything she says without any sort of due diligence.

Many Hillary supportets have already jumped ship. What is left? The crazy women who are blind, and unwilling to apolgize (like Hillary). GO VOTE FOR MCCAIN. Stop threatening and just do it in Nov. In the meantime, SHUT UP!!! We owe you nothing!

Brian Knoxville, TN   June 5th, 2008 9:06 am ET

I have voted for Democratic candidates in every primary election, general election, midterm election and recall election (I voted in CA against the 2003 recall of Gray Davis) since 1996, sometimes enthusiastically and other times not so much, and I have donated money to candidates and the DNC since 2004.

But this nomination is the worst failure of Democratic Party leadership that I have ever known. I wish pundits would stop saying that Hillary exposed weaknesses. She didn't. She's a strong candidate with depth. Obama is a weak candidate with nothing but flowery rhetoric and empty slogans. Hillary didn't 'expose' that Obama is sleazy and shallow. He just is sleazy and shallow, and most Democrats who voted in the primaries saw through the smoke and mirrors and saw that he is sleazy and shallow.

The party's leadership has totally failed us.
