WASHINGTON (CNN) –
The general election season opens with a neck-and-neck race between Barack Obama and John McCain, with more than one in five voters admitting that they might change their minds between now and November.

In the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll conducted entirely after Obama became the presumptive Democratic nominee, he leads his Republican counterpart 49 to 46 percent among registered voters — a statistical tie, given the question’s 3 point margin of error.

The poll is the first conducted entirely after Obama became the presumptive Democratic nominee.

McCain and Obama aren’t alone: independent candidate Ralph Nader and Republican-turned-Libertarian Bob Barr are both vying with the two major-party candidates for independent voters.

But at this point, it looks unlikely either will play a spoiler role: the margin between Obama and McCain is virtually unchanged, with the Illinois senator leading 47 to 43 percent. Nader pulls in 6 percent, and Barr 2.

What would Hillary Clinton bring to a Democratic ticket? Answer: about three percentage points.

A hypothetical Obama/Clinton ticket would currently get 52 percent, compared to 46 percent for a hypothetical McCain/Romney ticket. And if she's not on the ticket? Sixty percent of her Democratic supporters would vote for Obama, 17 percent would vote for McCain, and 22 percent say they would stay at home in November and not vote for anyone.

“That's just one estimate of the ‘Clinton factor’ and it may not be an accurate predictor since it piles several hypotheticals on top of each other and asks people to guess their state of mind five months from now,” said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Nonetheless, it does indicate that unmotivated Clinton supporters may be a bigger risk to Obama than defections from the Clinton camp to McCain.”

The results are based on interviews with 1,035 adult Americans, including 921 registered voters, conducted by telephone on June 4-5.

"Witness the Rise of the McCain Democrats."

Oh Brian, you hapless moron. You do, of course, realize what will happen if we elect McCrap, right?

1. The Iraq War will continue for a third presidential term (Brian, that's 4 years).

2. McCain will perpetuate the Bush tax cuts. Because with a "century of war" ahead of us, we need to get the money to fight it from somewhere… why not take it from the poor who can't afford gas or food… because we can't take that third car away from the rich, that's simply cruel.

3. A few brand new McCain-approved Supreme Court Justices will be appointed. Goodbye, Roe v. Wade. Goodbye, any chance at equal marriage rights for same-sex couples. Goodbye, personal freedoms.

etc. etc. etc.- the bottom line is that after two Bush terms, even some Republicans (the smart ones) are realizing that the time has come to stop this and vote Democratic. It takes a truly braindead individual- pay attention, Brian- to decide to vote for one of the most strongly conservative Republican candidates ever spawned, during this crucial election year. Especially to vote for him over a candidate who (besides having a less "embellished" resume- I mean, less experience) is virtually identical to your beloved Clinton, and one who Clinton endorsed. Time to make the right decision for your COUNTRY, not for your PRIDE.

I wonder whether Obama's closed door meetings today will alienate the media enough to start weed-whacking him the way they did Clinton. That would be fun to watch.

I wish   June 6th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

I Wish Hillary would have started her own party named "Reagon Democratic Party". The way democratic party is handling things is not good. They are going far left and reaching the edge, if not careful, they will fall of the left edge.

Clintons are more centrist and it will be good fight between McCain and Clinton.

Left ——————————–Center |Center—————————–Right.

Having a Obama/Clinton ticket would give the Democrat Party a SLAM DUNK at winning in November and taking back the White House. Along those same lines, any of the Senate or Congress would get a great boost to making sure that the Democrat Party would get the White House, along with the majority in the Senate and House.

Cam   June 6th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

There are just so many idiots in here…
Obama wasn't my first choice as candidate, but as the field narrowed to just him and Hillary I realized that both of them were good candidates and EXTREMELY similar on the issues. I am a DEMOCRAT because the party more closely reflects my ideals and REPUBLICAN ideals horrify me. Also, recent history CLEARLY indicates that we as a country are WORSE off due to the leadership of the REPUBLICAN party. A vote for McCain is a vote for continuing down the same path we've been on for 7 years. If you're voting for McCain because Hillary isn't the DEMOCRAT nominee, you are a STUPID IDIOT!!!

I followed the campaign with great interest and both candidates fought hard and did so in the style that best suited them and the situation they were in. It would have been nice if both parties could have ran things cleaner, but if they had, the race probably would've ended earlier.

It does not matter who you supported during the campaign, the nominee has been selected. You can be bitter about the results, but it changes nothing. You may think the results were rigged or otherwise tainted, but you're delusional — The results are legitimate.

There's a huge amount of bad blood between the Clinton and Obama camps and it is a direct result of the campaign and how it was waged. Is there a point in perpetuating the bad blood? Not when you realize that at the end of the day, it's just bitterness.

To both Clinton and Obama supporters, the war is over. What was done / said in the past no longer matters because we have to bury the hatchet and move on. If we don't, the next 5 years will look and feel a lot like the past 7 and I don't think any of us really want that.

Charlotte   June 6th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Obama did not vote for the war. Of course he was unable to vote at the time. Since he has been able to vote as a US Senator, he has missed 40% of them, including the Iranian issue. I think, based on the lies at the time, I would have voted to use force also. With that said, how do we get out, with at the very least a smigen of honor? I do not have the answer. My grandson just returned from Iraq and told me not to believe the media, the average Iraqie is glad we are there. I think I'll take his word for it. He joined the Marines to serve his country and serve he did. I am grateful he returned safely, many more have not. I pray everyday for them and their families. I doubt very seriously McCain wants to be there any longer then is necessary. His out of context "100 years" did not mean he wants to fight for a hundred years. We have bases in a lot of countries and have had for many years. We never left Japan or Germany. That was over 60 years ago!

Such ticket would be a disaster for democrats and it will NEVER HAPPEN, CNN. Barack is smarter than this.. and will not make McCain president by taking that thing HRC as VP!

THEN IT LOOKS LIKE A NO WIN SITUATION FOR OBAMA, HE WILL LOOSE IF HE PUTS HILLARY ON THE TICKET AND HE WILL LOOSE IF HE DOESN'T. THE WRITING IS ON THE WALL, WHAT IS MEANT TO BE WILL BE.

Brad - California   June 6th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

The idiots who say they will vote for McCain or will stay at home in November are just as hypocritical and disrespectful of the American people as the Clintons. Does anyone really thing the Clintons respect Americans? The Clintons respect only the Clinton ambition. Please go home Hillary, don't let the door hit you on the way out, and take your lying has-been husband with you. But when the "changed" Democratic Party decided to elect a racist/sexist/Marxist individual to represent it who - by his own admission - (1) didn't really know his pastor of 20 years, (2) didn't really know his first and biggest political supporter (who also conveniently purchased and then sold the lot neighboring his home to him), (3) didn't know his aide was talking to Hamas, and (4) didn't know another aide was telling the Canadian prime minister not to pay any attention to what he was saying to the American citizens - that his statements on NAFTA were just politically motivated in order to get elected and he really didn't mean them - this "idiot" decided to go with Maveric McCain and vote for Democrats (who don't have Obama's racist/sexist/Marxist proclivities) for Congress.

So since I am now an independent, I owe the democrats nothing.

No Vote for the party- one vote for my conscience.

Heather   June 6th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

I will not vote for Barack Obama for numerous of reasons. He is extremely under-qualified and I, along with some reports that I've heard, agree that he isn't taking the war as seriously as he should. He believes that he will get all of the troops back home within one year…yeah right.

I especially do not like his view on Roe vs. Wade. I'm a firm believer that abortion is murder and that people will have to pay the price with God. This man is completely insane when it comes to this topic…that's all I can say.

Although Obama does have great speaking skills and manipulation techniques as every other politician, I do NOT think he is right for this respectable position. He needs more experience in my opinion. If he worked side-by-side with McCain, I believe he would learn a lot more than he thinks he knows now.

OLDER IS ALWAYS WISER…… I AM VOTING FOR MCCAIN!

Ganesh   June 6th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Well if CNN did a better job of reporting on how McCain has changed his stances in the recent past like on wiretapping etc then maybe it won't be a dead heat. They spend soo much time reporting on a secret meeting between Obama and Clinton but no time on the policy position changes in the recent times by McCain.

Tony, Powell, OH   June 6th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

By the way, part of respecting one another is respecting each other's opinions, and NOT thinking (for example) that if someone doesn't support Obama, they MUST be a racist. That is pathetically naive thinking. How about you recognize that both candidates have their pros, and both have their cons? But go ahead, bluster, insult, scream, shout, etc….just recognize that the more you do that, the more you energize the other side to vote.

I will tell you this, however…by far, Obama supporters have been by far the most arrogant, self-centered, pompous, simplistic and insulting supporters of any candidate this political season, and for NO reason. He ain't God, folks…or don't you get that? He's a guy. And believe it or not, you aren't good enough to run the country by yourselves.

MD   June 6th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

I am sick of polls. They mean very little, especially 5 months beofre the election.

The candidates have barely started campaigning.

Lately, two-thirds of CNN "news" is garbage. CNN needs new producers and reporters. The shows are predictible and boring.

your hate blew it   June 6th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Obama and his supporters have NO IDEA.

This isn't about party or loyalty to a candidate.

This is about HOW one candidate was treated by the loyal fanatic worshippers of the OTHER candidate.

This is about the very values of change, unity, , communication, tolerance and respect for those different than yourselves.

Those who talk that talk, FAILED to walk that walk.

Now you can not strong-arm or guilt trip us into voting your way ANYway- just because we ONCE belonged to the same party.

NO to HC VEEP   June 6th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

NO to Hillary as VEEP. After the campaign the Clintons ran, Senator Obama has no reason to trust that she will follow his leadership. Further, they have vastly different ledership styles - she'd be bossy to staff - people would follow out of fear rather than agreement and loyalty. He inspires agreement and loyalty. Her daily presence would undermine that.

Mia   June 6th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

I don't know why some insist on holding Obama accountable for every single person who claims to vouch for him. Do these people ever think that these are McCain supporters intentionally trying to sabotage the Democratic nomination? Ignore what Obama's supporters the doing, and listen to the man himself. If you truly think that Obama would condone the actions of some of these reporters, then you haven't been really listening to his message that closely. Only those with strong stomachs need board the Obama train.

Sure, he wants to bring the troups home and end the war. That's great, lets end the war, bring the troups home. Now what? Do you think it's all over? NO! it's not, there still will be war however, the war will be on our turf here in the U.S. Maybe we should not have gone to war. But you know what? We did, so let's finish what we started and protect our people at home and the US soil. McCain is the only candidate we have who has the experience to take control of this situation. Obama will roll over and play dead, that's his answer.

i like how people use intellect and reason with their vote, and dont wave it around in a threatening manner, like hey im gonna do the stupid thing and vote like an idiot? Really, McCain? Have you been asleep for the last 8 years, or possibly hiding under a rock. If you dont think McCain will be a third Bush term, think again. And what possibly would any sane person want from the last eight years policy wise continued for the next 4 or 8 years? I cant think of one. All of the negatives of obama say nothing about his character and ability to be an effective president, one who can clean up the large mess were being left in. I was a hillary supporter from the get go, but not a bitter idiot who, just because she lost fairly, would now not support obama or democratic party. Look there were two candidates for the democratic ticket, only one could win, why is this such a shock to people. Remember this is for the big prize, the presidential election, get over the primary already. Lets just hope Obama does the right thing and chooses Hillary as his running mate. With that said it should give us one of the best administrations the country has seen, and change will be inevitable.

Democrats for McCain are just the element that the party needs to be rid of.

It is also my thought that they are a very small but overly vocal minority. They have the least interest in policy of any contingent in politics that I am aware of. They only believe in rule of law when it benefits them, they believe in a very subjective view of reality, and they promote fear and intimidation. I think they will be quite comfortable as Republicans and should be invited to dedicate themselves to those that align more closely with their world view.

Rev Wright mentions in interviews that James H.Cone is a great teacher of Black Liberation Theology and an inspiration to him. In Cone’s book he states “Black theology refuses to accept a god who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If god is not for us and against white people then he is a murderer and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill gods who do not belong to the black community. Black theology will accept only the love of god which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in black power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless god is participating in this holy activity we must reject his love.” That is what Rev Wright preaches. Obama has been listening to this garbage for over 20 years. Wright and Obama also have ties to Louis Farrakhan who has called whites “blue-eyed devils” and the “anti-Christ.” That is not the type of politician I am looking for.

Johnny T.   June 6th, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Do you really want four more years of this insane administration? Voting for McCain is like cutting off your head to stop a headache.

I don't know if its because Obama is black or because he fairly beat Hillary. Hillary would tell you herself that voting for McCain will be a major life change mistake and will get more of our soldier killed. Obama will win by landslide in Nov. People are sick and tired of the politics of the current president and his administration of Disney cartoon characters. This presidency has been the worst in the history of America. Some people who are posting that they will not support Obama because he beat Hillary should think about supporting a continuation of the Bush policies by voting for McCain. People like Brian Knoxville, Tn would be better served by analyzing the current presidents shameful treatment of the American people the last 7 years and channeling the anger he feels that Obama has won the nomination toward the republicans and helping to put an end to this truly disgraceful debacle.

defection   June 6th, 2008 5:19 pm ET

Obama's strategy of agitating hate to stir up his followers, is now backfiring.

They were counting on: "We can't afford 4 more years of Bush" to re-unite the party. So they freely bashed and trashed, and mocked and jeered and insulted away.

They failed to recognize, that such a strategy generally has the opposite effect, and even Obama can not charm his way out of the chasm he created.

And they failed to note that many democrats are actually fiscally BETTER served by the Republicans- I have 2 college degrees, earn over $120,000, own my home outright, have health Ins. I voted democratic because of the ideals of freedom and equality.

This primary drove me out of this party. You do not represent me. I care not for hate and denigration and disrespect.

And… many moderate to conservative Democrats can and WILL easily defect to the Republicans. Radical Left wing or moderate conservative? Guess which they will choose after the vitriolic nasty attitudes demonstrated by the Obama camp?

Chicago Asian   June 6th, 2008 5:19 pm ET

To Once for Obama:

It's to bad that you are going to put the 18 mil plus voters in the same pool for a few nastly bloggers. There are plenty of bloggers out there for Clinton and McCain that are just as ignorant and say stupid stuff.

I can't be help but questions, how your opinion of your candidate can be so easily swayed by other people's statements.

Regardless of what other Obama, Clinton or McCain supporters blog…I will be voting for Obama!!!!

kristina   June 6th, 2008 5:19 pm ET

I don't think obama needs Hillary I think this is a man whose time has come and regardless of who he chooses he is going to win, all the true heart democrates will vote democratic on Nov 2,

STOP. Look at the state-by-state polls to figure out the electoral college. The media is obsessed with the national polls which are irrelevant.

Anon! you are stupid. SHUT UP!

Matt Canoga Park   June 6th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

Obama do not even think you will win if you have Hillary on the ticket with you. She is a loser with a loser husband that will only tear you down.

They want you to think you are getting a Kennedy/Johnson type team that no one can defeat. Wrong you will get a Adams/Jefferson type team. With your VP undermining all you do because you are they president and they are not.

You can not win with her on your ticket. You will alienate too many democrates and unify everyone else against you. Don't forget over half of the US population does not like Clintons and do not want them anywhere near the presidency or a heart be away from it.

Don't trust a Clinton when your life is on the line Barak. It would be your first act of stupidity and will doom your campaign. You ran your campaign by being NOT Hillary Clinton. Why add her to the ticket now. What does that say about all you campaigned for. Just a lie? Where will the change be then?

Bayou Joe   June 6th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

Obama with Clinton as VP equals mild toast
Obama without Clinton as VP equals burnt toast.

Either way Obama is toast.

No amount of manuevering by the Obama people will convince this non-white former Democrat now Republican to vote for Obama.

He has no experience, no credibility and hangs out with the wrong people.

I love my country. I served in Vietnam, My sons served in Desert Storm and my youngest is a U.S. Marine. I and my family wll not
vote for Obama no matter who is on his ticket.

McCain can pick Joe blow off the street and still beat Obama.
One issue: Patriotism and Loyalty to the United States.

Niccole   June 6th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

If you want to start pointing fingers at the spouses of the nominees, then let's also look at Cindy McCain and her drug abuse and stealing from her own organization to feed her drug abuse. The fact that she didn't serve one day in jail for a felony offense is just amazing to me. I guess it helps to be rich and well connected.

So please, let's stick to the real issues of this campaign!!!

angelitA   June 6th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

DNC already asking me for money, and I told them not one penny until they run a fair and balanced election. Even if Hillary is on the ticket I still won't vote.

Since my vote is my own I can do whatever I want to do with it, and that is I will not go and vote against my principles and cast a ballot for a nominee not selected by the people but selected through a hijacked election and a bunch of promissory notes. Super delegates better hope those notes have a cash value come November.

Judy   June 6th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

The General Election is Barack's to win or lose. For all the people who keep threating to vote for McCain — just do it already and be quiet. No one has ever received 100% of the electoral votes. Oh yes by the way the GE is not a popular vote either it the electoral college remember. And since many of you don't understand delegates you won't understand the electoral college either(it's much more complex). There is no one to one correspondence of the vote in the GE. So vote for who you want and stop trying to black mail others if they don't vote the way you want. This is a FREE COUNTRY I can do what I want with my vote. You HRC people want to take away others right to vote just because they don't feel the same as you. America the land of the free and brave, it seems Barack and his backers understand that even if McCain (today he said the Prez don't need approval for wiretapping) voters do not.

Once Senator Clinton and Senator Obama start appearing together and campaigning; this lead will grow - beyond doubt.
Also, let Democrats be very clear about it's policy matters and transparency, let Senator Obama spearhead the campaign with his economic revival plans and lowering gas price.
I am so happy to hear Obama's plans about robust transportation system, which Americans deserve so rightly, as in Europe.

Lisa from VA   June 6th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

I am a Republican who voted for George Bush twice, but this year I am voting for Barack Obama. Its the only choice that makes sense for me. I simply CANNOT tolerate 4 more years of the same and I can't imagine how anyone else could. I went to see him yesterday in VA and the response to him from everyone there was simply amazing. It was just awesome to witness. His supporters love him, I can tell you that much.

I think that the democrats who are refusing to vote for him need to at least listen to what he has to say with an open mind before they make their final decision to embrace McCain and 4 more years of what we already have. I strongly things can only get worse with McCain. I believe with Obama, we have a real chance for change….hopefully for the better.

Michelle   June 6th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Yes, Barry is behind– because any strong Democratic
candidate would be trouncing the Republicans in a
year of recession and unpopular incumbent.

Sure, sure, blame Hillary.

But the painful truth is: Barry cannot cut it.
Many Americans do not trust him.

About "Racial tention"

The media has become a breeding place for racism and sexism and the all king of bias talks.

Whatever decision our candidates makes should be respected.

One thing bothers me alot is that the media has allowed only one particular demographic to speak loud in the media. And although it has nothing to do with Sen. Obama's race, they have twisted every arguments people had about Sen. Obama's candidatecy into racism.

I feel sad that somehow many African American leaders put their all hopes in just one man instead of sharing their glory and their pride and their works with all the other accomplished individuals. The African American community has put one man on the top and the rest unseen with propagenda. And their issues has become more personal and important than the rest of the issues. But I doubt that's what the all African American feels that way. Women will vote for man or woman.

Meanwhile, no other country on this planet is supporting global warming, and any efforts we do to curb emissions won't matter at all..

Obama supporters yell at Republicans for the trash they started, well I can't wait to see all of these smarty pants far left control freaks do to our country…

That is bad news for BO. The Democrats cannot even beat the Repubs after the shambles of the last 8 years? Pathetic. BO should be way ahead of McCain—not tied. The fact that they are in a dead heat is bad, bad, bad for Democrats in November.

Setemup   June 6th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

What is all this positive campaigning about anyway? Thats sooo nieve Mr. Obama. Can't you stop being so hopeful and looking for all these peaceful loopholes to jump through. Its insane to even entertain the thought that anything might be resolved without a war! I don't care if France hates us. Who is France anyway. We saved them in WWII. You're constant calm in the face of adversity is very sexist and will result in major loss of US casualties and the war you will not prematurely start with nations around the world. We need a leader with the strength and courage to commit adultery and cover up his wifes drug addiction and won't reveal where his money comes from. We need a leader who never snaps under pressue and can make clever war jokes based on 60's pop-hits! We NEED MCCAIN 08!!!

Too early to mean anythng. No matter who (Obama or Cli\nton) ran against McCaine, the ultimate race will be change in the polls and will remain close up to the election. But we do know that Clinton isn't going to carry much for Obama. The latest polls show that Obama is winning 63-23% among Hispanic voters — so Clinton's wide win in teh primary isn't carrying over. And Obama hasn't even got into full campaigning as McCaine has been doing for 3 months, and McCaine hasn't been under attach from a fellow Republican for 3 months. — The campaign hasn't even started.

McCain has been running against the Democrats for months now while the Dems. have been running against themselves, and yet he never seems to top the mid-40's in any national poll. He's running at 47% in West Virginia, which he should be leading by 20 and at only 50% in Arizona, of all places. Obama tends to rise in polls as more of the electorate becomes familiar with him. I focus only on McCain's numbers; As long as he stays mired in the 40-45% range, Obama will win.

Everything will fall into place. Don't worry. It's not about polls, it's about individual quality of candidates and if one thing is sure: that counts in the end. Again, the 100.000 polls , pfff…The intellectual capapicity of voters if what counts. Relax.

Joseph, NY, NY   June 6th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Obama stop trying to paint Mccain as another Bush, true Americans know he's his own man and a good one at that. He has more courage in his pinky than you will ever have. You are unpatriotic and disrespectful to our nations symbols, you are not worthy to wear a flag pin. You lie and go negative and get a free ride from the press. If the media would replay all your negative comments the same way they played the others comments you would not be where you are today. You’re a phony and true Americans see right through you.

I was initially willing to vote for either Democratic candidate.

The profound hatred, disgusting name-calling and vile filthy denigrating insults coming from the Obama camp worked to change my mind.

First, you don't GAIN votes by trashing and bashing the other candidate and her supporters.

Second, disrespecting others is a road to division, not unity.

Third, You can not COMPEL us to vote for Obama by threats, indimidation, forcing your opinion, and name-calling.

Finally- what does it say about Obama, if he attracts such a hateful and intolerant following?

david,baltimore,mamryland   June 6th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

If a statistical dead heat is the best that MCcain can do after the democrats have torn themselves apart for the last two months while MCcAIN had no opposition, then Obama will win in an absolute landslide.
THE only thing that McCain has achieved is a cure for insomnia;everytime he opens his mouth people fall asleep by th ethousands. He is a total joke as a speaker;he is really attracting loads of people with great enthusiasm to listen to him ,isnt he?
It is a changing of the guard fellows.Old guard republicans and old guard democrats.I predict that this election will effectively terminate the republican party and a new third aprty will be formed. The neo-cons and evangelicals do not represent a large segment of th erepublican party and they will meld with socially conservative democrats to form a new party.

If there were no racism, Senator Obama would win this election hands down. People are making up all kinds of excuses and rationales as to why they can not or will not vote for Senator Obama. We all need to search our souls. If we find racism, we need to confront it instead of finding ways to nurse it or denying that it exists within us. Lets us 'keep it real'. Unless there is some biasness going on with democrats who voted for Hilary Clinton, for the life of me i do not understand what is the big deal here. Hillary plans and Obama's are not that different. After all the only downside i can see here if any is that Obama is claimed not to be that experienced. At the end of the day experience does not gaurantee one to make perfect choices or decisions. It comes down to sound judgement. If Hilary supporters want to defect to Mc Cain, then i say let the flood gates open, at the end of the day they will be punishing themselves for the most part, self infliction of a failing economy and radical political views towards the rest of the world amongst other things. Voting for Mc Cain is like taking a suicide pill….If democrats truely want to defect to Mc Cain, then i say birds of a feather flock together, i just hope i do not hear them complaing later down the road…Fools!

CNN I would like to ask you and I don't care wether this gets posted or not…

Earlyer today you ran with "Majority of democrats would like Hillary as VP"

I don't get how you could say that when for the last week these blogs have said the opposite. Hillary would be better suited for a cabinet position where she could leave if she wanted, Barack could ask her to leave if it wasn't working. If not what would happen with these to strong people with differences with the whole world watching…

An early poll that probably doesn't mean much. During the next five months, I think we'll see candidate Obama really has no grasp of the issues. McCain may not be as oratorical or as pretty as Obama, but at the end of the day I believe it's McCain's election to lose.

SHE LOST   June 6th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

RJ, CA   June 6th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

But then consider this:

Washington Post 6/6:

Clinton's voters see more of themselves in McCain than they do in Obama.

• Over the past three months, Washington Post-ABC News polls showed an average of 25% of those backing Clinton in the primaries "defecting" to McCain in a hypothetical match-up with Obama.
• A new poll from the Pew Research Center conducted just before the final Democratic primaries put the number at 28%.
• In another survey, the percentage of Clinton supporters holding a positive view of Obama continues to slide: only 45% view Obama favorably, down from 58% in December, before the voting started.

And finally . . .

– 26% of Democrats crossed party lines to vote for Reagan in 1980.

Go, McCain — the only genuinely "vetted" candidate now left!

Bill   June 6th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Obama has tried to paint himself as a new politician. How it is important to shed the ways of the past. How can he spin picking Billary for VP? Isn't that the politics of the past? JFK didn't like Lyndon Johnson and Johnson had no love for JFK when they ran and took office in 1960. But the dislike between the Obama camp and the Clinton camp goes beyond that. Dems have to remember that Bill Clinton will be part of the equation. The last minute pardons will come up, and so much more. Too much baggage added on to a campaign that will have way too much baggage as it is.

NoMcSame   June 6th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

To, Brian in Knoxville,TN
Your anger should be aimed right yourselves for not putting your money where your mouth is. The DNC does not have the money to fight the GOP for her and you all did not step up to the plate to help her out. Hillary is BROKE. All that you did was go to the DNC meeting and make a bunch of noise but what she really needed was your money and most of you held on to it. Obama was the only one in the DNC with enough money to fight the good fight against McSame and the GOP. So get over it and send Obama some money to help get out people out of that hell hole called Iraq.

Obama stands to lose 7.2 million votes from Democrats alone according to your poll, not to mention the independent supporters of Hillary who probably run several miilions more. It's a lot more of a loss than Gore experienced from Nader in 2000, and we all know where that went.

Is anyone telling him this? I would think he's want to resolve his VP question by asking Hillary sooner rather than risk bleeding away all these voters.

Chi4Obama   June 6th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

It doesn't matter what these polls say now.

Obama could put Rev. Wright on his ticket as VP, and McCain would still be toast in November.

ms.sims   June 6th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Wow…Brian I don't even know where to start with you
1. Since you think McCain is so squeaky clean just simply Google him and that argument will be disspelled
2. He didn't eliminate anyone off the ballot they eliminated themselves by not following voting rules and there was actually someone else but he lost in the primaries and took his name off leaving Obama the only name on there
3. He found the church after working in some of the toughest neighborhoods and realized the hope it brought to those in dispair and it changed his life as well
4. Rezko was convicted…not Obama as a matter of fact his name was hardly mentioned throughout the trial and he hasn't been charged with anything…u can Google Clinton vs. Paul since you like that type of news
5. Check the voting record for many others in Congress who voted present various times and oh yes your dears McCain and Clinton are included in that group
6. Im tired of people like you acting like McCain and Clinton are tantamount to Mother Theresa they both have numerous shady dealing and people in their pasts.
7. And if she was the more qualified one she would be the nominee the media doesn't go out and place votes…PEOPLE DO

I hope everyone read the New York times article about how black American men received the vote before before black or white women. For many of us this is the history that propels us to vote for McCain. McCain acknowledges that both men and women serve in Iraq war (Barack repeatedly said men with Katie Couric); referred to the Democratic Party as HIS party(with Katie Couric); and refers to women as "sweetie". However, I would like for McCain and Hillary supporters to boycott this blog. The comments about Hillary and McCain are not worthy of response.

You must be one bitter person to criticize someones command over "English", that take the message. You wont support Obama - fine !! Dont impose your lack of straight thinking and proper judgment on others. You have every right to share your thoughts with anyone you like, but remember so does everyone else.
Don't think just cos you wear yellow shades, the whole world is yellow.Have you heard about "thinking outside the box" - you need to take lessons on that. For your age, i expect a bit more common sense and wisdom.
Its because of selfish people like you that the world is the way it is !
Shame on you.<>

Still for Hill   June 6th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Those Obama people who say, "I voted for HIM- not her!"

Well 18 million voted for HER- not him.

And you will not force your boy down our throats.

As you say, the more YOU push, the less likely we are to vote your way, EVEN if we initially planned to.

Stacy Clarks   June 6th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Brian, stop being so melo-dramatic!!!

VOTE DEMOCRAT IF YOU WANT WHAT IS BEST FOR THIS COUNTRY!

Obama played FAIR and by the RULES that everyone agreed to INCLUDING CLINTON!!! and he won JUST AS MANY VOTERS AS CLINTON!!!! He won fairly!!

so to say you were "betrayed" by this party is so childish, and so this "i-did-not-get-my-way-so-im-going-to-throw-a-hissy-fit" thing you are doing is NOT setting a good example for you, or our children.

NOW LET'S UNITE AND DO WHAT IS BEST FOR US ALL AS DEMOCRATS, VOTE DEMOCRAT IN 08!!!

OR ELSE SEE ALL OUR RIGHTS, AND THIS COUNTRY DO DOWN THE DRAIN UNDER MCCAIN!!!

I just read a comment on another story (whose comments are closed) about what a wonderful job Obama has done in his career and how he did not vote for the war.

GUESS WHAT. He has ducked out or neglected to vote his conscience SOOOO many times - see Project Vote Smart - votesmart.org - and check out his voting record (or lack thereof) for yourself. He wasn't even a Senator when we went to WAR!!! He can talk all he wants about being against the war, but since then he has not bothered to vote on most of the war funding bills which you would think, if he was so against it, he would at least make sure he was there to register his position. But he has not practiced what he preaches and he should be called on it.

Just one of the many things that will start coming to light more and more….

Chi4Obama   June 6th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

CNN,
Once again, your "Polls" continue to amaze me.

Keep in mind, that there are over 300 million Americans in this country. And your poll only reflects the opinions of 1,000 people via a phone interview 5 months before the actual election. Give me a break.

Can you say sampling error? Why don't I just take small sample of folks in my church. I bet they would vote overwhelmingly for Obama.

Next article please.

Brian Knoxville, TN ,

We will just do fine without you. You are always welcome to join the famil,. Obama will be our next president. Those who are with us are more than those who are against us. McCain is too old, too Bush-like. After seven year the rupublicans have made the country worse.
A war tha McCain want to "win" in 100 years. Bush took us in war to Iraq for oil, now oil will be $150 before Busk leaves office.

I can go on and on. After all that, how can people want another Bush in the Whitehouse?

Neal   June 6th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Thanks for your insightful comment, Brian from Knoxville.

Go for it McCain Democrats, serioulsy just do and shut up! Your smear and threats have been heard, shut up! We get it, shut up!

For all other democrats, those that care about themselves, their neighbors, their sons and daughters, unite behind Obama! See the issues for what they are and vote Change!

Dems Unite!!!

Sharon R.   June 6th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

I really don't believe this poll. Do they ever callpeople who only have cell phones or just land lines? They way this economy is with people losing their jobs and the highprice of gas and food. I can't belive people would vote for John McCain unless they have alot of money to spare for 4 more years of the Bush policies.

I pray that these people use sound judgement in the general election and not ignorance.

tim g   June 6th, 2008 4:34 pm ET
